Can You Haiku?

Photo by Outdoor Exposure by Denise

Good morning, bloggers.

Thank you, Heritage Seeker, for inventing and posting the haiku contest. I am so impressed by this talented blogging group. The winning entry, submitted by show me the green, is posted below:

rising sun’s pure light
mountain vistas dawn to dusk
whispered dreams now true

All entries were fabulous and worth a read. I will make sure the winner of HGTV Dream Home 2010 receives a copy of our haiku collection when he or she is handed the keys to the house. My fingers are crossed that one of our very own blogging friends wins this year. Wouldn’t that be fun?

haiku has inspired
dazzled by blogger talent
proud to represent

Gail

  1. HGTV Dream Home Call ME – I am ready to come HOME

The Winner on February 9, 2010 at 5:21 am
  2. Wierd – I think my previous post was sent to Mr. B's office or at least the hallway outside (which was almost worse; the seemingly endless waiting). I wrote it over an hour ago and it didn't post till just now. Just for reference what happens if the Boolean filter sticks on something, do you get a explanation or hit with a ruler….

Anyways I'm gonna steal LynnCoggin's title of "Hot Days – Chile Nights" for this post. No I'm not going to talk about the UNNECESSARY AC but New Mexico Chile. The chile is NM's top agricultural product. Unfortunately it's not available in a lot of the country. In some markets NM Chile is mislabeled as "Anaheim" in some grocery stores. Check out buenofoods.com (an Albuquerque Company) for a decent chile selection. Their "Autumn" roast is wonderful. Chile is usually sold in Red or Green (NM's official question)

MikePinAbqNM on February 9, 2010 at 5:21 am
    • Hello MikePinAbqNM. I am a "hot pepper junkie" & have a garden full of them. In the movie, "Wild Hogs," they were everywhere around Madrid!

If Mr. "B" doesn't like your homework, he just tears it up and you never see it again — no note! As to "hit with a ruler" — maybe you get a demerit in his "who's been naughty" book. (hahaha)

      Heritage_Seeker on February 9, 2010 at 9:20 am
    • For those of you who haven't been here….yet!….when you go to a restaurant and order something with chile in or on it, you will be asked, "Red, green, or Christmas (red and green together!)?" I love it!!!

Ramona on February 10, 2010 at 6:37 pm
  3. All chile starts as green fresh from the plants and each autumn most New Mexican buys 50 lb bags and roasts it off. August and September here smells incredible as all the grocery stores have their huge roasters going all day. About half of the chile is hung up in ristras to dry. Which turns it to a deep shade of red and imparts a smoky deep mellower flavor to the chile. Green is often the hotter.

We New Mexicans put chile on just about everything including eggs, in bread, french fries, on pizza, and on burgers. And yes there are many places who serve a better Green Chile Cheese Burger than Monica's find in Madrid, The Mineshaft (See the Taste of New Mexico Video)

MikeP on February 9, 2010 at 5:27 am
    • MikeP, that sounds like heaven to me!!! I need to get serious about moving there. The smell of roasted peppers, and the flavor are awesome!

I've found that, what I call, "tweeners" are the hottest. To me, a "tweener" is the point when the pepper is just starting to turn from green to red. Any thoughts on that?

      Heritage_Seeker on February 9, 2010 at 9:28 am
      • Agreed! Just enough of the brightness of the fresh greens and a touch of the smokyness kicking in. A lot of us enjoy "Christmas" or red and green chile on your _______ (fill in the blank) for that very reason.

MikeP on February 9, 2010 at 5:28 pm
  4. And I make a great Green Chile Chicken Stew which takes any chill and replaces it with a warm fuzzy feeling deep in your soul.

Start by preparing the green chile (The sauce that can be used on everything) You may want to scale this back as this makes 22 Quarts

Saute together 4# Chopped Onions, 24 oz Chopped Garlic, 1 1/2 cups Olive Oil, 36 oz Diced Tomatoes, Salt to taste, 1/2 oz of Oregano.

When onions are done add 1/2 quart Chicken Broth, 4 5lb bags Mild Bueno Green Chile, 1 5lb bag Hot Bueno Green Chile and 14 oz smashed tortilla chips (leftover corn chip crumbs) Cook until warm and at the last step add 3 1/2 oz White Vinegar. Properly cool to below 40 degrees as quickly as possible. You will want to freeze some for use throughout the year.

MikeP on February 9, 2010 at 5:44 am
  5. And now the Green Chile Tortilla Stew. This recipe is for one serving so multiply for how many you are serving.

9 oz Chicken Broth, 2 oz Green Chile Sauce Above, 3 oz of your favorite salsa, 1 oz corn, 1 oz shredded Cabbage, 1 oz Sauteed Green Peppers and Onions, 1 oz Crushed Tortilla Chips, 1 oz Cooked Rice, 1 oz Cooked Black Beans, and 3 oz Cooked Chicken.

As you can tell this is a fairly large bowl of this wonderful stew, adjust as desired.

Heat to above 165 degrees and serve. I top mine with Guacamole, Sour Cream, Pico de Gallo, Chopped Scallions and Cilantro and Shredded Cheese (Cheddar, Mont Jack and Cotija)

    Enjoy and again God Bless

MikeP on February 9, 2010 at 5:56 am
    • Thanks for the recipe, MikeP! I have copied and saved it, and can't wait to try it!

fogdor on February 9, 2010 at 6:58 am
    • There's nothing in the rules against using metered postage. I am sure HGTV doesn't care how the mail gets there.

  8. I didn't read about the contest either, where was it posted? I would like, if I am so lucky to win this dream home, is to frame the painting of the dream home that I saw on one of the videos. It was the architects rendition probably.

  10. I hate it when it rains on our parade!!! I wanted to attend this event that is organized by our local H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) Chapter. As I write this it’s raining, and the radar shows a widespread area coming in. FYI, following is an edited portion of a notice from our Chapter Director:

    “Fellow HOGs,
I just wanted to get out a quick reminder about the ride we have scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday the 9th of February) to Westgate School. This is the Escambia County School for special needs children…..Every year we participate in a special Mardi Gras event for the children of the school…..

……We ride over to the school and ride in a small parade in their parking lot with the children lined up around the outside edge and we toss beads and small tokens to the children. It is a great event that brings so many smiles to the children and means a lot to the Parents and teachers……”

    With good intentions, H_S.

    Heritage_Seeker on February 9, 2010 at 10:36 am
    • H_S that sounds like such fun for everyone! Such a shame about the rain. I am sure the students look forward to this special event every year. Keep Dreamin… 3rd time is a charm..hope this one gets to you..

      • VABrenda, I'm replying to your 3rd message. Please note that all 3 were indeed posted. Perhaps you might want to go back and "Delete" the first two.

This particular event is always a hit, and a “feel good” thing to do.
        Regards, H_S.

      • Our H.O.G. Chapter does a lot of charitable work, especially for MDA. This particular event is always a hit, and a “feel good” thing to do. Oh well – still raining (:~(

    • There is nothing like the sounds and sights of many Harleys riding in together. I went to a Toys For Tots rally last year that was sponsored by one of your Harley groups. I just wanted to stand right in the middle of them all and just listen. I was with a friend that owns a BMW. No comparison. He gets mad at me when I say that I like Harleys better.

  16. I really love all of the beautiful and creative haiku so many bloggers have been posting. However, I have to admit that my favorite form of verse is that black sheep of the poetic world – the limerick! Here is a sample for all to enjoy (or not!):

Oh, I fear I must make a confession.
    Dream Home 2010’s my obsession.
    Every detail I find
    Is etched into my mind.
It’s as if it was my own possession!

    • P.S. I also found the perfect photo by Denise to go with my limerick:

      http://www.flickr.com/photos/outdoorexposurebyden

I would love to see others match their verse to one of Denise's pictures. or vice versa — perhaps one of her photos will inspire you to write verse! It's fun to see how everyone's creative minds work!

  19. A quick quesiton about the casita…seems like very little privacy from the bathroom to the bedroom. Not sure I want an audience when I am busy in there…are the glass walls a permanent feature or just for the cameras to make it easy to see?

NYCJIM on February 9, 2010 at 1:21 pm
    • The glass walls are permanent — it's up to you to decide if you need to figure out a coverup if needed!

      C&E on February 9, 2010 at 1:48 pm
    • Regarding Casita: in one house plan on the site I notice originally directly inside casita on entering on the left was a door entering into the bathroom next to closet. The existing glass shower wall next to bed was a solid wall on that plan. They obviously decided for the cameras the openness of a glass wall would look better. That could be changed, however.

Joy on February 9, 2010 at 11:13 am
    • NYCJIM, if I had to guess, I would say that the "Dream Team" used Smart Glass.

  27. Question of the WEEK!

I have been looking at Denise’s AMAZING collection of photos. Since it takes a lot of time to see all 981 pictures – I have decided to turn this daily activity into a longer project.

We all seem to have fallen in love with the photo above, I know I sure did.

However, please go to Denise's site (using the link provided above), look over the OTHER 980 fine pictures, and post your Favorite choice.

You could reference a page number and Title, or you may want to include a link in your reply!

For example, I put my own caption on a picture, "D. H. Blogger Spends Weekend Looking For Thermostat # 5.” link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/outdoorexposurebyden

  38. Is this where we post questions about the house for Gail? If so, here are mine:
    1) What is the small screen thing next to the TV in the home theater?
    2) Would you think the Casita would be practical as one of the main bedrooms instead of for guests? I'm sooo in love with it, and I'm twelve, so the master suite won't be mine, and neither will the kid's.
    3) How do you keep the outdoor chairs safe from water when it rains?
    4) Are there any other bathrooms I haven't thought of here – master, jack and jill, casita?
    5) Is there a TV in the Great Room?
6a) Which side of the house faces the street?
6b) Is the house set far back from the street, or is it close up?

aj on February 9, 2010 at 10:50 pm
    • 1. Master remote?
      2. Anything is possible
      3. I'm guessing they're weather proof, or get some covers.
      4. Yes, just off the home office
      5. No, no TV in the Great Room.
      6a. I think the front?
6b. Not too close, but exactly how much couldn't say

      LeeG1 on February 9, 2010 at 11:38 pm
    • 1. The small screen is a control panel for the home automation system.
      2. I don't think the Casita would be practical but that would be up to your parents I guess.
      3. The outdoor chairs are weather resistant.
      4. There is another bathroom next to the office. You can see it in the office photos. There are 2 and are number 12 and 13 I think but you will find them there.
      5. There is no TV in the Great Room.
      6. The front door faces the street.
      7. The house is set back from the street not close up.

OK I did my best. That should hold you for a few minutes. Happy Dreaming !!!!!!!

    • As to the last question, not close at all to the main road, which is actually a two lane, rather quiet road itself…you can check out the exact location of the house on the San Pedro Creek Estates (or Overlook Estates…I can't remember) and you will find a layout of all the lots…this house sits on lot #87.

  39. I have a question. If the winner decides to sell the Dream Home, will the he/she be able to sell the home for the estimated value? (around $2 Million with the Furniture and all the goodies). How have previous Dreamhome winners faired at selling their prizes?

    Thanks

Jose on February 9, 2010 at 10:58 pm
    • The value of the house and contents is 1.5 million. The development has a deal with HGTV to buy the house back for that amount if the winner prefers the cash option.

Barbara on February 9, 2010 at 11:46 pm
    • I can't even think of selling the home, it is to beautiful!! I will have to find a great job to keep up with the greatness of the home. Do all dream home winners sell???

cja on February 10, 2010 at 1:05 am
      • It look like it. I don't think I have read anywhere that someone has not sold there house yet. I know the win in ???? I cannot remember the year now sold her house after 8 years of having it. The next person Don Cruz fault to keep his house for 3 years but ended up selling too. I think if I win I am going to keep it but after the first year it should be down hill on property and state taxes. I know property tax can not be as much as you think it is on 3 acres. I know my hubby's grandparents pay close to $1,000 on property tax in Arkansas. We will have to wait and see what these people do now.

  40. I keep looking up at my own night sky, trying to paint in my mind's eye the beauty of the Sandia New Mexico night sky and imagining standing before the real painting. The flashes of light, like a dramatic dream, GODS love.

  41. Hi gang,

Is this photo purchasable? Who took this? That rainbow looks like a straw, with the land and sky nursing light back and forth, until- creation!!! I grew up around The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and never saw the awe of this. It's healing.

        • It's true, that you often feel as though you are entering an alternate universe, when you live with the sky beings and the land of New Mexico….whenever you get out of your dwelling, you feel transported!

      • Amazing Amazing, thank you Heritage. There is verility in the eyes of this photographer, a wistful sensuality that makes me feel like I am sitting on the breath of a hummingbird, or feeling the wind of the desert night howl against my neck, I dont know why, but this is some of the best stuff, thanks for unleashing this Herritage, you have done a fine job.

        • Your prose is very poetic, Janice…perhaps it's time for you to share more of your writing??? Have you published anything??

          • Dear Ramona,

I guess like so many on this blog, I have an artistic feeling abou life. I published a few poems years ago, and wrote a small column for a newspaper in Cincinnati about the ecology. They called me the New Age Bag Lady.. I am so turned on about the submissions on this site, that it has inspired me to start journaling and witing short stories and poetry again. My current interest is also in educational family films

  46. Hi Gail,

This is better than writing to a gossip column. This has been soo much fun, I would call it an artistic release. I feel great after blogging, and am enjoying it as much as entering. The photo you submitted is like icecream on a tofu cake. I am wild about this site. and would love to dream about this photograph, in the HGTV DREAM HOME. Thank you for the wonderful job that you have done. I always wanted to ask this question- are you o n the staff, or one of the fascintated participants like us, with an eye for the camera, journalism, and warm dear style. Who are you and how did you come to this site?

  50. Wow….love to see there are others out there that are not afraid to Dream…I have told some many family and friends about this sweepstakes. And it saddens me that they have lost hope in Dreaming for a Better Life. I am hoping that I win to inspire people & of course to better my families life and live in this amazing home.

I am happy to see I am not the only dreamer out there. …..Good luck to you all!

The Winner on February 10, 2010 at 7:35 am
    • Hi The Winner,I have also told family members about this and they think i'm crazy for Dreaming.I have not had a lot of luck in my life but as you said i would love to also win this house to show my family that Dreams do come true if you believe. This would be the best thing that would have ever happen to me and my family.where i come from something like this is just something the you could only dream of.But i'm keeping my fingers crossed.Good luck to you.
