And the Winner Is…

Today the folks at HGTV congregated at a local fulfillment house to select the winner of HGTV Dream Home 2010. Our president, Jim Samples, was on hand to chose the winning entry and read a thoughtful Christmas card from our 2009 winners (let’s just say they are doing well and are incredibly happy).

Could you be the lucky one? I honestly don’t even know the name or location of the winner. I cannot wait to watch the giveaway show on March 15 at 8 p.m. Anyone planning a dinner party? If so, don’t forget to serve our signature Dream Home margaritas.

Good luck!

  7. Nice to know that your Dream Home Contest is Fixed!!!!!!! The winner is proported to be surprised but yet the show knows an awful lot about her before they even tell her your show is fixed and you can't tell me any different!!!!!! And also I went to sign up for one of your other contest and it said you had a age of between 20's and 40's for the rules and in my opnion thats age discrimination. There for I will unsubsribe to your show because it is a farce.

  11. I think that this HGTV DREAMHOME GIVEAWAY contest is rigged! With all the millions of participants, the winner had to be from New Orleans, supposedly a victim from Katrina. Are you kidding me? So what!!! A lot more people deserved to win, more miserable stories to tell, much more deserving. I thought that HGTV had integrity and fairness, I guess I was wrong. If you win, you win, you don't have to do a background check on someone and convince people that their story is inspiring therefore this person should be the winner. IT'S A GIVEAWAY CONTEST, NOT A PULITZER PRIZE CONTEST!

  16. Very pretty lady with a wonderful story! I would be crying too, matter of fact, brought tears to my eyes just watch her.
All the best to her and her family!

P.S.,I hope she doesn't mind that I've jumped on all the beds and lived in the house for over a month now
in my dreams that is :D

Auntie on March 16, 2010 at 3:12 am
  17. rigged for sure. I dont want to sound like a hater, but there is no way the odds of the winner being in ?New Orleans. And what about the online entries? did they add those to envelopes? Also the web site said one entry per day, but I tried it and could enter over and over as much as you wanted and it would say good luck blah blah blah after every entry. They should make it a sob story sweepstakes not a "random" drawing. Wow there should be a law against it. oh wait there is!

Dooped in AZ on March 16, 2010 at 3:51 am
    • The same odds for anyone elsewhere. Yes the mailed in entries were counted, and the online form generously allows for people who forget and accidentally enter twice in one day a little slack, by only counting it once, instead of discarding all their entries like they'd do for someone tampering with the system with many entries per day. After the winner is selected, its in their best interests to make the story as interesting and positive as possible for the press coverage it will receive.

  18. I will not waste my time on the Green Home, maybe a Haitian with relatives in Haiti will win, totally coincidental!

  20. Rigged, for sure. Everyone I've talked with agrees. HGTV should respond to these allegations.

    • A "Katrina" victim wins. I am not surprised. Katrina "victims" as they like to call themselves have been helped from people all over the world, but yet they still are complaining. Maybe this will help them. I never heard one peep out of the "victims" of Hurricane Ike Galveston, TX or other Hurricane prone areas – only in New Orleans.

sharon on March 16, 2010 at 3:08 pm
      • Exactly!!! Did you all know "Katrina Victims" are still receiving housing. When our home was destroyed during Ike, guess what we did? Moved on! and this lady looks like she did the same but for some reason she's a hero hmmm

I don't think some of you would be happy if Mother Theresa won

  22. BTW…No biggie that some do not want to play anymore, more chances for the rest of us to win. :-}

Auntie on March 16, 2010 at 3:10 pm
  23. Hey people… It was an HGTV giveaway, and as the word implies HGTV could "give-away" what it wants to whom it wants, when it wants. Did you read the rules and understand all the details included under the subtitle Grand Prize Winner Notification? You don’t need to have a doctorate degree to understand them, just being a careful reader. Among the details HGTV clearly specifies “Main Sponsor anticipates that the potential Grand Prize Winner will be contacted in person on or about March 14, 2010 (subject to change) in the form of a "ambush style" visit by Main Sponsor representatives and such potential Grand Prize Winner may be filmed during such visit by Main Sponsor”. “Main Sponsor also reserves the right to randomly select an unspecified number of potential finalists” for the Grand Prize where the Grand Prize Winner will be selected in a random drawing that may be televised”… “Main Sponsor reserves the right to notify the potential Grand Prize Winner by overnight courier and/or telephone”.

Puerto Rico on March 16, 2010 at 4:30 pm
  24. cont…
This must be all true, but logically you have to put it in a chronological order… what came first, the hen or the egg? 1- Random selection of the unspecified # of finalists; 2- random drawing of the GRAND PRIZE WINNER; 3- Notification to the winner by overnight courier and/or telephone (of course HGTV has to contact the winner prior to the filming and be sure that the winner will accept the prize in accordance with the sweepstakes rules); 4- Contact in person “ambush day/ day of the film”. Air space cost a lot of money and HGTV is not going to pay for nothing… And regarding the gap between the day of the drawing and the televised announcement…it is the necessary time so HGTV can search and contact the winner and so the winner can comply with all the rules (the requested affidavit, the Non-Disclosure Agreement and release of liability, etc)… congrats to the winner!

Puerto Rico on March 16, 2010 at 4:32 pm
    • They can film the winner being surprised early, then get the agreement for publicity to show on television at the official air date and time, and with a $2 million prize hanging in the balance, who wouldn't sign?

  25. New Orleans Really?

frustrated on March 16, 2010 at 5:39 pm
  26. Well its over however I hope she can aford it. It looks like she has a new home already why another one. As for a Katrina sick of it the people of New Orleans came to Houston and has destroyed it. Hurricane Ike did the most damage ever Downtown Houston looked like 911 . And the city is still recovering. Galveston was bad and people are still missing that was washed into the Gulf of Mexico. The only person who has come thru to help is Neal Diamond who gave several million to help rebuild.

    Sheryl O on March 16, 2010 at 6:57 pm
  27. why so many haters??? So what the winner was a Katrina victim…get over it! If you were meant to win you would have won, but yu didn’t

dfrisby on March 16, 2010 at 4:57 pm
  28. There is always a few people that try to look more educated than others, even though we will never know the person. The word that comes to mind is….. "DOUCHE". I agree it is not a random drawing. I also agree, you will not see a truck drive up and camera crews all around the day you win. There is too much legalities (is that a word? Maybe Puerto Rico can help me). I say again RIGGED. I am glad for the lady that won but not happy with HGTV.

Dooped in AZ on March 17, 2010 at 1:10 am
    • YOU WERE NOT DOOPED…………EXCEPT IN YOUR OWN MIND………IT WAS JUST AS RANDOM AS RAIN……….TO PARAPHRASE MAT 5:45 THE SUN SHINES ON THE GOOD AND BAD AND THE RAIN FALLS ON THE JUST AND UNJUST .

vivilori on March 17, 2010 at 1:29 am
      • I am assuming you work for 'HGTV? And to paraphrase MATTHEW, I guess there is no corruption in this world either. hmm who's mind again?

  29. Curiosity, not racism…has anyone not black or white ever won the HGTV Dream House?

    45auto on March 19, 2010 at 6:57 pm
    • Are you counting spouses of the individual who's entry was picked as winner? If so, then Yes. The St Marys, GA dream home was won by the Nakao's.

  31. Um, clearly they hand choose winners. I've entered this contest for years, I don't remember seeing the background check until this year. Maybe I just missed it, but it's REALLY odd.
In a bad economy, they're going to make sure people are camera-ready before giving the prize? It's not really a sweepstakes then, it's more of a contest.
    A congeniality contest.
I'm going do a little research and find out if they can act like it's a giveaway. It's a lot of ad space for their website, and they aren't even doing a real drawing. They are conducting BACKGROUND checks.
It's not right, and might not be legal to call it a sweepstakes.

    Terry M. on April 25, 2010 at 10:59 am
  32. I too was so surprised and disappointed to see a BACKGROUND CHECK..in the terms in order to qualify to be a winner..This is just not the same, what is ok means never having a ticket or any blemish to yourself and most likely anyone in your family.. It gives them a lot of permission to do checks to make certain the winner will be the perfect person from the perfect family….seems more than fixed and this really saddens me, I used to look forward to this every new years but due to extended family issues I do n

  35. I thought they used a ball hopper last time. If you look at the picture, there's a drum beside him.

Neither here nor there, though. Selection is made and everything we write here is just speculation. :-)

    @StephenWNagy on March 2, 2010 at 9:13 pm
  36. Yeah, ball hopper to pick the bin; then the computer for a random selection from a virtual bin.

    Thanks,
