And the Winner Is…

Today the folks at HGTV congregated at a local fulfillment house to select the winner of HGTV Dream Home 2010. Our president, Jim Samples, was on hand to chose the winning entry and read a thoughtful Christmas card from our 2009 winners (let’s just say they are doing well and are incredibly happy).

Could you be the lucky one? I honestly don’t even know the name or location of the winner. I cannot wait to watch the giveaway show on March 15 at 8 p.m. Anyone planning a dinner party? If so, don’t forget to serve our signature Dream Home margaritas.

Good luck!

  1. Did anyone enter in online and by mail as well?

    I_Had_A_Dream on March 13, 2010 at 5:00 pm
    • I did. Sent some in by on-lineand then toward the end I sent about 5 or 6 mail entries. I am wondering if the same address restriction for e-mail address, only one person, applies to written in mail entries. The guy I use to take care of at his home, lost it to Katrina. Until he can get another home, he is here and applied a few times. Lots of people in the South don't have their original address and live with other people…. Why did you ask about doing both?

      • I did the same thing…Sent multiple entries through out the contest and also online.I was wondering if they can disqualify someone.I didnt read that for the rules of the contest. So basically…Just wondering?

        I_Had_A_Dream on March 14, 2010 at 7:38 am
      • You could enter as many times as you wanted for the mail entries. I entered about 100 times by mail and everyday by email.

  4. you know it is kinda sad that they got everyone tied up in knots hoping when they ambush the winner its on the 14th,but i do wonder to if its all prerecorded that the winner knows ahead of time, my heart really goes out to everyone because its really a beautiful home an a dream.i to would of love to win it but realize its a long shot.but thats ok i love to dream like everyone else it makes me feel like a kid again.with all the things going on in the world today we need a little dreaming. i just wish if the rules say surprise ambush and the winner wont know till that day well thats what it should be.so people wont have to wonder an guessing,a suprise is what that means is a suprise.i am hearing so many heart breaking needs in this world an truly so many deserve to win it.you know 2 million could build several smaller homes for them that dont have one,or lost thier to loosing thier jobs.but hey god bless everyone i feel for so many my heart is for you.god bless keep on dreaming

    • Since I am really sure they wouldn't tape the ambush live ( in case of bad language etc) I have become very dis-inheartened. I loved the home. It was truly a dream home for me. I was going to pack up everything and move from Salisbury, MD to Sandia Park…uproot my whole life but I need the change and new beginning right now. The economy, my back injury….I hope the winner isn't going to do a quick flip just for the money. HGTV should make them sign a contract that states they will live in the house physically before selling unless granted special permission from HGTV (can't afford it, shipped overseas…etc) Then if less than 10 years..HGTV should get it back….pay for time spent and see if runner still wants it…I know I would!

Sandy Kennedy on March 13, 2010 at 8:40 pm
      • Most people can"t afford to stay in the house. The taxes, HOA fees, insurance, property taxes yearly, and what ever else there is will be much more than most people can handle.

kim on March 13, 2010 at 9:07 pm
      • Usually the winner is from many hundreds of miles from their "win", which makes keeping it difficult. They'd likely have to leave family, friends, and current employment, if such as stipulation was put on accepting the prize. I'm glad that people are allowed or encouraged to quickly sell the home and spend the money on a dream that's more practical for themselves.

  6. Does anyone know if retirees from General Motors are considered employees. That would disqualify a lot of entries.
I know that the rules state that you can't be employed by any of the sponsors.

maggiepye on March 13, 2010 at 7:22 pm
    • retirees of GM are disqualified from winning the dream home giveaways, which GM has been a major sponsor of. The same would apply to ethan allen retirees, etc.

  10. Auntie, I went back and reread the rules. Looks like HGTV has the right to pick a few extra "potential" Grand Prize Winners to sprinkle in with the "actual Winner" and they do not know who is real. Hence, one of them could be ambushed. So they are basically prepared to be ambushed a lot more than we are today. Because we have not been picked as a "potential". I think the "not real" potential winners get a free trip to view the house ect. They will probably feel a lot worse at being so close yet not win than we will? HGTV can change the rules at any time- maybe the "not real" potential winners are possible backup if the actual winner can't take the helm! How would we know anyway? The show must go on. After all we want to see who wins.

Reply and let me know if you reread and see it the way I am describing the situation.

    CaSSandra

CaSSandra Smith on March 13, 2010 at 9:54 pm
    • I see a lot of possibilities in those rules. They could add as many entries as they want and contact a potential winner any way they want.

I'm going to play until I see the happy winner on TV.
I'm off to dream about jumping up and down on all the beds now. :D

  11. I received in the mail a subscription offer to the "Discover New Mexico" magazine. Did anyone else receive this offer?

luckygypsy on March 13, 2010 at 10:26 pm
    • This is CaSSandra. Not that I know so far. How much? Or was it free? The whole world is probably reading the posts, especially New Mexico. Our e-mail may get lots of info from that State. After all we say we want to live there. Why are you Luckygypsy?

CaSSandra Smith on March 13, 2010 at 10:56 pm
      • Good morning, the main reason for the name of luckygypsy is we found out that there were gypsies in our family history; always moving from town to town. For some reason we seem to move residences every 8-10 years. We have been here in Idaho going on ten years – time to move.

luckygypsy on March 14, 2010 at 3:28 pm
        • Just realized you answered. Looks like everyone is in church today. Where else is everyone? Maybe outside waiting? Interesting your moving every 8-10 years. We were called gypsies many years ago because we moved everywhere and across country 8-10 times a year! Well, at least you are "Lucky" gypsy! I chose CaSSandra for my professional artist name off of Sandra. Later I found in the Dictionary she was the Prophetss of Doom and Disaster! No wonder when I left Galveston, I had to fix my home again from Hurricane Alicia. I never made it to New Mexico because I had to stay fix this house after Hurricane Katrina. Good luck always follows though- everyting is brand new from floors to roof! I raised my insurance to the max just weeks before Katrina hit. Not bad for a gypsy education. Guess we will keep on moving on….

CaSSandra Smith on March 14, 2010 at 11:24 pm
    • I did too. I think because of the entries having our address on them. I did click on the links giving information about the cities of Albuquerque and Santa Fe – maybe they applied a cookie to get my address from the entry to send me the magazine offer.

  12. I know its wrong and selfish to pray fhat we win this home, but I believe my Lord understands. Really…and on the other side if we don't win I will know it wasn't His Will and be HAPPY for whoever it is. My Priest told me that God knows what's in my heart and all I can say his that when a winner is selected I know that will be the right one. I guess my wife and I are more than a little excited and the odds might be against us, but we're going to optimistic until the name is called and as I said–HAPPY for the winner. When He closes one door, another always opens!!!! Good Luck to us all!! Its been so long waiting for this day. I think this home is the most beautiful one HGTV has built yet and right in the middle of paradise!

Hey! We ALL have great taste obvioulsy, right? RIGHT!

    • Hello Navy family! My husband was a Rear Admiral. Yesterday I sat at my computer. Immediately the phone rang. It was UPS and they said they were delivering a letter and it required a signature. A UPS precall? Oh! 3 days to the 15th! It was a 30 digit tracking number. Could it be HGTV? I ran to the art room and asked what my friend thought. Then I ran back and called UPS. It was real! Again, I ran to tell the friend! A brief few moments it was exhilarating. But again, I ran back and called UPS for who sent it? The 5 minute period- estatic! Instead another door opened: It was a Louisiana Road Home grant for those who lost their home, like my friend. The door to the Dream Home may close but another has opened… Almost 5 years since I filed his Katrina paperwork. As his caregiver, I was as happy yesterday as when I got my insurance. Possibly as much as when I thought HGTV was calling! So keep on looking and going through the doors until the right one opens for you…

      • Thanks for the note CaSSandra–nice to hear something positive from a fellow Navy family. Your husband was an Admiral? Wow…then you can understand how an E-6 can relate. I am so glad to hear your working on "The Road Home.." in New Orleans. My friends who live there say there are more than a few problems with the program, but at the same time they are grateful for the assistance that does take place. God Bless You and yours, and all those who help less fortunate ones among us. I am in Child Abuse Prevention with a govt. Agency as my 3rd career and I know you knw when I say the intangibles more than make up for the salary being sub-par. Its a Blessing to be able to do the work…good luck and God Bless You and Yours. BTW…I don't care if they have picked the winner or not–I can still dream. As the Stones once said '….lose your dreams and you will lose your mind.." We all have blessings to count and can find many others with so much less.

        • I am a widow as my husband passed away before Katrina. You know Admirals get out of the labor work. I was my own contractor on the house. A labor intense workout in this one of kind disaster. We were here 25 years but I was that much younger than him also. So I missed the actual Navy life. That is funny your sign off since we are following the Seas to the desert! When you have had the Sea in your house sand and mountians look good. It will take me a year or two to get to New Mexico. Waiting until the market goes up and going back into my art which I could sell well in the area. You can see if you type Hotsit 13@bellsouth.net on Google. Scene 4. Interview with CaSSandra. Let me know if you check it out. You will see why I believe in luck and have a lot of it. I make it, literally! Well, here is to sharing luck, Good Luck to your family too.

          • CaSSandra,
I, too will follow my dream to the land of painted deserts, intermitent UFO sightings and good clean air. Your last post intriqued me and win, lose or draw that will be my next destination after some time in New Orleans seeing old friends. They are also involved in TRH in a manner of speaking and NOLA is near and dear to my heart. I couldn't find your Art no matter what I tried…. I am totally interested in seeing what your mediums are, what you produce, etc as I am a musician and a painter Whether Jim picks my name or anyone else's…its just going to take a different route to fulfill that adventure. Please let me know how I might find your work-it sounds like we might have went to different high schools together. :) Good Luck to You et All! As you make it.. What is, is meant to be and I can't wait to set sail into that desert!!! By any route! I have been waiting so long for this and to just know will be the best part. Keep your paint wet and your charcoal dry. Beignets and coffee on me at the Cafe DuMonde.

          • OK. Do this precisely. Go to your internet server and type in Google. When you get on google, type Exactly Hotsit13@bellsouth.net then look for 2004 Scene 4 Magazine: Steve Esquerre Consorts with CaSSandra or Interview with CaSSandra. Then hit on that and it will take you to the interview. Usually it is the 3rd or 4th website listed. It is the Online magazine of theater, film, media. It is for writers, actors, etc. There is my personal story and he put just a few paintings and dolls but I made many thousands- read it. Don't be afraid, at first my face is painted for Mardi Gras and unmasked at the end. Be sure to use Google! Get back and let me know…

  14. I have a question! Why does HGTV keep building homes for people to win when in most cases we couldn't afford to live in them. It is a DREAM HOME. I know you have the option maybe to sell it back to the builder but do you have to keep it a certain amount of time before doing that? I don't live in a fantasy world, I know to actually be able to live in that home one would have to be sitting comfortably financially already. I would sell it back to the builder, and buy a place in Peralta or Los Lunas since that is where my Grand children live. Any way, good luck to the winner and may you all stay happy, and healthy for HGTV Dream Home 2011.

Patricia Strickland on March 13, 2010 at 11:38 pm
    • They build dream homes to bring attention to the sponsors and to the network. If the home isn't dreamy enough it wouldn't gather national attention that a million dollar plus prize affords. According to Milton who won the St Michaels MD dream home the winner can sell immediately as HGTV awards the prize. The monetary part of the prize should smooth out any title transfer fees and closing costs for selling the dream home within time before the income taxes are due. Usually the winner is from many hundreds of miles away, so keeping the home is not in the cards, because who wants to leave all their family, friends, and current employment?

  15. Well the wait is over, that means that living with the hope of winning is over too. There were times I really thought it was me, in previous years and it didn't happen. It is better to trust in God than luck any day>

  16. Just a note to add to my last blog. The only two reasons I tried so hard to win this Dream Home are Logan, and Evan. They are 7 and 9 and I saw this as maybe my last shot of getting to move to New Mexico. Thank you HGTV for allowing me the extra hope even if it was not meant to happen. Thank you Logan and Evan for loving me from such a distance. I LOVE YOU BOTH!

IT'S SOMETIMES GOOD TO HOPE BUT IN THE BACK OF MY MIND I'M STILL THINKING IT SHOULD BE SOMEONE WHO HAS NOTHING .THAT WILL BE A GREAT GIFT TO GIVE SOMEONE LESS FORTUNATE. 24. i really wish the winner happiness, but i really think it should be what they say a suprise, the rules are a little confusing for some.ambush to me means not knowing till they show up at you door, that truly is a suprise.not the week before then the ambush is not a suprise at all.for you already know ahead of time.my goodness today they can do anything on tv alive. so hgtv a suprise means SUPRISE HERE WE ARE,lol if you know already please when we see you on tv for the ambush act suprise please because thats what gets the ratings so please put on a suprise face please, because if you dont look suprise i will know it was a setup the week before lol remember suprise face

christina on March 13, 2010 at 8:59 pm
    • I am like you and so are others. They are more sad about it not being an absolute ambush on someone than not being a winner? I overlooked some of the meaning and specific wording in the Rules. But reality TV isn't reality either. Maybe that is why Court TV changed to "It is not reality, it is ACTUALITY! Really, I am so far behind at getting my furniture repaired, storm damaged, and putting 8 pods of belongings away, the shock and real ambush would be on HGTV! I have a hundred mannequins in my house and many Christmas trees still up in every window. Including a giant gold one upstairs. It took so long to find my stuff, I am going to leave it up until next year and I'll be ready without the work! Then, the mannequins could have been put in every window looking out and the surprise would be on their faces. HGTV is very conservative, they would want to control their ambush because "they" are suppose be the surprise and not the other way around.

  26. This post is for all the dream home dreamers, bloggers winners and the ones who did not win this dream home. I also wanted very much to win this dream home but since we cannot ALL win the HGTV dream home, I just wanted to offer to everyone the free opportunity to win a home in Heaven. This home is free to you paid for by Jesus Christ our Lord. He offers all of us his way to Heaven, our sins paid for by his payment on the Cross of Calvary, and a dream mansion in Heaven for each of you. Behold I go to prepare a place for you and I will come again and receive you unto myself. If we do not win This dream home on earth, we can all be given the greatest gift of all time (Heaven) and a faboulous Heavenly Dream Home Mansion in that perfect place, with our Lord Jesus Christ. Happy thoughts to all in Dream Home Land!!

reece on March 14, 2010 at 2:48 am
    • Amen to that! And guess what? No HOAs, No Taxes, and No Upkeep!! What He gives me here on earth is what He knows I need (after all, we're not residents here – simply visiting and harvesting, right?) What we get in Heaven….Oh Man!! Jesus had given me a vision 12 years ago in a dream and I was able to see Heaven – just a brief glimpse and I got to visit a few people…It's undescribly amazing! Makes this Dream Home look like a mud hut.

Lord, please cover my "earthly visitation needs", and let my harvest be excessively abundant. Amen.

  35. We toured the HGTV 2010 Dream Home last weekend–what a beautiful place to call home! The workmanship, the quality of products used, the design elements and architecture are all "top drawer"!
And then there's the wonderul views from every room in the home–what a great location!! The videos, pictures and words used to describe thr home and locatrion are great; but to experience the reality of being surrounded by mountains, the truly turquoise skies, the feel of a mountain breeze, the home itself, just has to be done in person. The 6 hr. drive was worth every minute–a weekend to live the dream, if only for a few hours–imagine a lifetime in that beautiful home and magnificent location!!!

  42. This is the first time I have entered a contest. For some reason I felt that I could get lucky. My husband and I have had a really bad year and I thought maybe this could be our shot at a new beginning. Good luck to everyone and best wishes to the winner.

  44. Good Luck to everyone on your dream home.

For those who do not win this dream home remember to keep on dreaming and never give up on your dreams. I dream of winning this dream home because I need to change my life and move somewhere where I can start a new life. I recently survived cancer at 29 years old and currently dealing with discrimination in the work place. I would love to move and get a new job and new life somewhere where I could have less stress. I do not have luck and never win anything but I figure that I must try and dream like everyone else. God knows this would be a real dream for me and it would solve many of my problems but I do not want to be selfish and hope the best for all involved. Never stop dreaming and have hope and faith in everything you do. Good Luck and God bless!

  47. Go back and watch last years winner. They were sooo pretending to be surprised. She even said that they knew the Monday before the Sunday "ambush". They had to keep it quiet until the camera crew came for the reveal. Sorry Bloggers, better luck next year. It really sucks that they can't just show up at some ones home but then they wouldn't have time to make things look good for the cameras!

    • The ambush was real, but it wasn't done on the night of the show, it was done a week earlier. I really truly believe she was surprised – the couple that won the SOnoma house anyway.. The other one, the "Dee's" ..I don't think that was a surprise…it looked to be a second or third take, considering the hgtv lady just walked right into the door and that wife looked really mad.
