Meet the Winner of HGTV Dream Home 2010

Feeling a bit teary-eyed after watching the giveaway show? Not sure about you, but I adore Myra Lewis! What an inspirational story. Here are a few fast facts:

Education and Career:
-Myra serves as the Assistant Director, Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, where she develops training programs (life skills, technical and environmental) that target the unemployed and under-educated.
-Myra earned an M.S. in counseling psychology from the University of Florida Gainesville in 1996. She earned her doctorate in counselor education from the University of New Orleans in 2001, specializing in multicultural issues.
-Myra earned a B.S. in science education from Xavier University in 1967, and an M.Ed. from Texas Southern University and the University of Liberia while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer Teacher and Volunteer Leader in Liberia, West Africa, from 1972 through 1975.

Inspirational Story:
-Myra’s home in the Gentilly district of New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. She and her now-25-year-old son, Chris, lived in both Houston and Baton Rouge before returning to New Orleans to live in the Algiers district, one block away from the river. She renovated her original home, which now serves as a rental property.
-Myra’s highly functioning autistic son, Chris, a gifted visual artist, is pursuing an associate degree in fine arts. When she learned of HGTV Dream Home’s proximity to Santa Fe, she dreamed of an early retirement in an area where her son might flourish. See Chris’ Artwork

Giveaway Story:
-Myra has entered the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway for the past several years. This year, she and her sister Deidre Marion Charlot (who lives across the street from Myra) reminded each other to enter every day. Watch Exclusive Giveaway Video
-Myra has traveled to New Mexico twice and says she was “enthralled” by Santa Fe.
-Myra loves this year’s HGTV Dream Home, especially the courtyard, rock columns, tile work and casita (she plans to host many visitors).
-Myra’s family was planning a family reunion in Louisiana. The party location most definitely will change.

  1. Congrats on the win Myra!!! Best Wishes To You and Your Family…

    • Hey-not to put down your congrats to Myra and I am sure that she has worked hard for all her accomplishments-but just once I would like to see someone less fortunate win. Someone with a Masters Degree who can't get a job, who does pro-bono work, who lives without a kitchen, who has to eat on the floor because they have no furniture, who got reamed by Remax, who has lived in a construction zone for the last three years because everything on HGTV looks so easy. Myra has a job, she probably has health insurance too. Yeah oh well life sucks

      • get a life, get a job and then get yourself out of the hood

Denise on March 19, 2010 at 1:34 am
      • Dear stuckinthehood, Myra's good fortune has noithing to do with your bad fortune. Nothing about her life until now was based on luck. She studied hard, worked hard and overcame adversities that you know nothing about. To my friend, Ms. Myra – Dr. Lewis, I could not be happier than I am that the universe has rewarded you and Chris in this way!

    • Disappointed in California!!! There are so many deserving people who do not have a home, and there are those who have no money to repair their small home if you can even call it a home. People who are losing their jobs and losing their homes as well. I am sure you are deserving, but you have had opportunities that many Americans today and future Americans may never have and that is an education as you have. Hopefully you give back to those who are really in need. I understand that you lost your home, but you were able to rebuild. Their are so many who cannot afford to fix their homes. HGTV needs to focus on families who really need hope for their future where their is peace and harmony in a safe place to live.

      • Remember, it was a Random Selection, and it wasn't necessary to qualify with an Essay. Of course we are sad, but we need to accept it and get over it.

    • Dillard college where Lewis works recieves grants from Hilton which is also partnered with HGTV food network. Dillard is a "sister" college to Scripps College in CA. Scripps is the sponsor for the contest. They should have just handed Lewis the prize. Why did they even bother with a drawing? 11 out of 13 past winners have all come from states where Scripps is headquartered. All but one winner was a homeowner. Sponsor "reserves the right" to screen and chose the best winner…

Keith Dunan on March 25, 2010 at 5:39 pm
      • Now we know the "rest of the story" Keith, your info is so hidden here. The two states where Scripps not headquartered, interesting, would be? … easier than saying 11.

I told the group I would invite friends from the site, Things are really cookin over there, and Coop is up to his poetry and research and all the regulars are there. I think your imput would be important.

  3. Congradulation Myra, You are lucky beyond belief and I wish you all the best. Your reaction was fantastic and I couldn't help but feel a little envious as I among millions of others wished for this home so much. But I am most certainly happly for you. You are living my dream too. Enjoy.

  6. This is the most perfect, heart-warming winner I've ever seen on the HGTV giveaway. No way could they have hand picked a more perfect person to embrace this home in the land of enchantment than this gracious lady and her family. I was so hoping that it would be someone who truly loves the area and what it represents. This home is very blessed. And God bless Myra and her family.

  7. Why does HGTV act like they are notifying the winner, live, on the spot? You know that they have to be found and have plans to be at home the night of the show. It's also obvious to me that the winner is dressed to the nines and ready for the film crew. It didn't seem like a "real" surprise. I just wish it wasn't so Hollywood and more true to life.

Cindy on March 16, 2010 at 12:55 am

I wish you well and hope you win the home next year if you decide to join us again. Good Night.

Sandy LA on March 16, 2010 at 1:45 am
      • Yeah — just think there is much more at stake than just giving some dude a CASH Prize. There's a lot of accountability here — SERIOUS STUFF! Deeds, several legal documents, taxes, the image – oh my God it's overwhelming! Sounds like REAL LIFE! That's when HOLLYWOOD is at its best!

HGTV really must have a huge staff (and budget) to handle all of the legal issues far beyond just handing some dude a 2+ million dollar check.. Besides the esteemed sponsors (what a huge responsibility HGTV has — all for the sake of our dreams and entertainment??) – there's also the involvement t of the State and Federal government.

Cindy describes it as Hollywood, The production department of HGTV is 'excellent' – they have to be!!

I think I'll hope more on winning the state lottery (usually the pot is a lot greater (NO DEEDS or PROPERTY TAX). But then oh man, it'll cost me a dollar a ticket.

In the mean time: CONGRATULATIONS DR Myra Lewis !!!

Alfred on March 18, 2010 at 4:07 am
    • Helllloooo!! It's T.V. even if what you are saying is true–it has to be a little planned–it's a half hour live program–it helps if the person is home.

judy on March 16, 2010 at 2:45 am
    • Cindy, It was true to life. Something you should know about the camera, It can go into your eye ball an into your Soul to see ( Acting 101) Dr. Myra Lewis was the real deal, and as for her dressed to the nines, its called being professional.

Ladyleo on March 16, 2010 at 5:06 am
    • I agree, it sounds like they're giving her resume and not really talking about her, but her accomplishments. I do they they choose a winner, but not randomly!

      Diana R on March 16, 2010 at 12:12 pm
      • I entered this contest and I never once gave my sob story (I had two miscarriages in 2009 and my husband is being deployed to Afghanistan). They DO choose randomly. What do you think they do, call up people one by one and say "hey, tell me the hardest things about your life," and then pick the person with the saddest story? You people are crazy.

Anon on March 16, 2010 at 2:05 pm
    • just wish her the very best. How deservering they are. God is smiling on LA, 1st the superbowl then Dr Myra Lewis. I wanted to win but I feel like God could not have picked a better person.

terri on March 16, 2010 at 9:16 pm
      • She is deserving of this home. How can you not tell how surprised she was, even in my own mind I was thinking. Oh goodness what if Jamie comes to my door what am I going to say, I was rehearsing, just in case.

Kathy Diane on March 16, 2010 at 10:34 pm
    • DID NOT KNOW YOU HAD TO INCLUDE A SAD STORY CAUSE WE ALL HAVE ONE

KATHI on March 16, 2010 at 11:07 pm
      • reminder- there was no place on the entry for a sad story…meaning there was no way of knowing until they researched the winner for the ambush. If it would have been you then either your sad story or accomplishments would have come out too.

adisneyfamily on March 17, 2010 at 3:09 am
        • Not necessarily true. The entry asked for your name and contact info as did the "contact us" section of the HGTV Dream Home website specifically for the dream home. She could have easily sent them a comment explaining her story.

sarah on March 17, 2010 at 1:00 am
    • Hi Cindy, Paraphrasing 2 of my previous posts: Shock is individual…it looks different for each of us…just cause I would be screaming and jumping up and down doesn't mean that she would. And I have to say that a lot of people waiting to see if they won (like me) took the time to clean house and be coifed and dressed just in case. The show isn't live. The prize was awarded by ambush earlier, probably last week in order for HGTV to have all the paperwork signed. Last year I thought it was really live too, but learned a lot this year! And actually I know people who look just as nice any time of night or day. Not me though! Now can go back to comfy clothes til next year! Woohoo!

Susannamac on March 17, 2010 at 1:50 am
    • You are right !! I was watching it here In Rio Rancho/Albuquerque at Six pm and it was daylight , as I was watching the HGTV as they about to the winner everything at there end was dark, even the dream house location was dark , so everything was tape and planned.. Plus it make me wonder she WON base on her story and her life ??? None of this make sense …..

Manny on March 17, 2010 at 3:26 pm
      • Her story is the same as many. I wish the person who won, needed the money. or needed the car…or a home. she has a good profession enough money to be vacationing and obviously enough to renivate her home.
It was pre-taped, and I am sure the person is not "randomly" picked. We are silly to think so.

mcc on March 17, 2010 at 6:40 pm
        • I agree. Nothing random about this. Why doesn't HGTV admit that? Think I'll stop watching the network or their web pages. Phony all the way.

Julie on March 20, 2010 at 4:03 am
    • Totally agree with Cindy. How did HGTV know so much about MYRA, before ever meeting her?? ED

EddieK on March 17, 2010 at 8:23 pm
      • There's information about her online, not really surprising these days. Directors of non-profit organizations who go out on public speaking engagements often have bios online. The whole show was probably filmed several days to a week or so earlier, and just presented as if it were live. It was never announced as a live as it is happening television show as far as I could see. There were no overlays saying "Live", etc. The hosts used phrases like a few days ago, etc. for the drawing of her name which was March 2nd.

rninaz on March 17, 2010 at 11:45 pm
      • So right! I would love to see someone who lives in a freaking apartment win. Why do the winners always look like life is okay for them while so many other poeple are struggling with just one wish thier life could change.

    • Don't you also think that they performed a credit check on her to make sure that she could afford these winnings?

John on March 18, 2010 at 5:17 pm
      • Of course! They totally research the person prior to awarding them the home. It wouldn't look too good when, two days later, the newspaper runs a big spread about how a working prostitute who has spent numerous stints in jail and prison, not to mention rehab, was the lucky winner of the HGTV Home!!!? I wondered if they would pass over me since I am not the prototype of the usual winner!! And just because someone remarks that the winners seem to all have alot in common does not make them a "hater"! Must be alot of kids on here………..

Lady MaMa on March 18, 2010 at 8:35 pm
        • So true! I think it is unfair though. Just because one's credit report may not look so good doesn't mean that they are a bad person. Someone could have a low credit score but be the most caring and kind hearted person you know. Maybe they just need a chance. Especially in this economy!

          schatzibaby35 on March 29, 2010 at 5:13 pm
      • I don't know about a credit check, but I do know they do a background check on you.

Alfred on March 18, 2010 at 8:45 pm
    • I agree with you, but I am glad someone that needed a home won the dream house. I must say that this winner seems to have been picked because she lost a home in Katrina. It is wonderful that she won, but why present her as if it was a total surprise and this was not planned because I do not believe she was picked at random. Why not tell the public she was chosen because of her need and deserved the home. Why lie to the public that this was a random win. This was all planned and not a random surprise and that is alright except the lie that this happened by a drawing. Just state that this winner was planned and a deserving winner. Stop the lie.

Lynda Raven Brake on March 19, 2010 at 2:15 am
      • You're amazing.. Dr. Myra Lewis did not need a home. Do you read or listen?

It's not only in New Orleans that ppeople have lost everythinjg do to a natural disaster. Madame Lewis has a home. What nerve to call it a LIE — Do you read or listen?

What would you do with 4000 square feet of living space when it wasn't being cleaned?? Is that something — (all of that space) — that WE ALL NEEEEEEED?

Alfred on March 20, 2010 at 3:29 am
    • I agree! This was the first year I could see this was not a "surprise" visit. HGTV already had the biography of the winner before they knocked on the door. Jamie was telling us all about the winner prior to the fake out at the front door. Every year I sit and watch, hoping to see them roll up to my door. I guess I don't need to watch the show. I am happy for the winner, but I really hope to win next time.

    • Oh get over it. Not everyone walks around in sweats and no make up all day. Some people do actually take a shower every day… perhaps your not one of them! So what if they knew something about her ahead of time. Even if they talked to her a couple days before, I have no doubt she was still excited. I know I would be! I was already planning my party when I won the house! oh well.. maybe I'll win next year! Congrats to the winner and sour grapes to all you losers who cant accept the winner!

    • Although I agree with you, I too wish someone who wasn't a home owner could have one. Did you hear her say that she was taking out a second mortgage at 60? Just because she's in a home, doesn't mean she doesn't need help. She would be paying for her new home forever!
And, it's random, they can't help it if the person comes up as a homeowner vs a renter.

Susannamac on March 17, 2010 at 2:05 am
      • I understand what you are saying Hopeful but there are so many people who may never even have a chance to have a mortgage. I feel sad when a homeowner wins every year. It feels like your average person will never have a chance to win.

        schatzibaby35 on March 29, 2010 at 5:17 pm
    • yep, agreed. And this was the icing on the cake since she already more than likely made out like-a-bandit from the Hurricane Katrina…Maybe her 25 year old can finally afford his own place. 25 is much to old to still be holding the apron strings….

judy on March 16, 2010 at 2:42 am
      • As a native New Mexican who lives in Albuquerque, I would like to say that I am completely happy about Ms. Lewis winning this home. She lost her home in Katrina and had to purchase a new one at age 60. Her son has autism. I should certainly hope she was compensated some but it would never make up for losing her home through no fault of her own. I'm sure that her own personal accomplishments is how she has "made out" and caring for an ill son is something to be admired. She is a most deserving woman of many virtues and would fit right into our community. So, keep your selfish thoughts to yourself and quit waiting for someone to give you something for nothing. How do you think a homeless/jobless person could afford to live there – do you think that a charity will continue support them for the rest of their lives because they won the dream home?

        • I get what your saying and do not begrudge this women in anyway but…BUT she was able to purchase a new home and as duanting as a second mortgage is or may be at 60 she is also fortunate to use her old property as a rental. I'm a single mom I lost my home twice almost back to back FLoyd and a Noreaster. FEMA helped a little the first time…it was a rental so my landlord was able to rebuild but I wasn't that fortunate the second time and unable to recoup financially. We recieved no help that second time….as a matter of fact now three years later with four kids I am in worse financial condition than I've ever been barely making it pay check to pay check….in dire need of major dental, furniture. A job. I'm not looking for a free ride but comparitively speaking there is no comparison between her situation and say someone like myself or perhaps worse than I God forbid. But so be it….I wish her and her wonderfully talented son all the best. And may God bless and guide them.

        • Finally someone who tells it like it is!!! You go girl. Why can't people remember that this is a contest just like the lottery (powerball, megamillions,or state) and winners are picked at random. Winning the lottery doesn't mean that all your problems are solved (just look up all the former lottery winners that have had to file bankruptcy because they thought that the money would not run out).
PS now I understand why Reneelovesandlivesgreen, and other oldtime bloggers stay off this blog for a few weeks. People please try and be nice. Like my granddaddy used to say "If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything!!"

BDianeB on March 17, 2010 at 11:41 pm
        • Don't put down jobless/ homeless people. That is unfair considering the state of our economy and the many amout of people who have lost thier homes and jobs! They deserve a chance just like anyone else and are just as able to manage thier finaces as someone with perfect credit or income!

          scatzibaby35 on March 29, 2010 at 5:22 pm
      • I agree, and it didnt seem like she had a bad home it was a newer very nice home, Why put in to win a home if you have one? Congrats to her, I was so upset to see another well off person win I had to turn it off, my husband and I just sat there and said wow that sucks we where hoping at least to see someone who needs it win, but yet again this year another person who dont really need it wins…. I find it funny that HGTV knows her whole life story before they get there….????? UGH how very depresing!! Congrats to her and her family, hope they donate thier "NEW" homes they just bought !! • well to do people need to win these homes. can you imagine what the property and income taxes will be, not to mention maintenence? do you think a poor person could manage all that?

barbara on March 17, 2010 at 9:01 pm
          • go research. Almost noone has kept the home. They sell them and walk away with a bit under a million and a car when all is said and done. If she can afford the 800k mortgage needed for escrow I'd be surprised. I think she is deserving compared to some of the rich WASPS whove won. BUT hgtv admits in the rules that they do background checks on the winner to make sure the person doesn't "reflect poorly" on the network. So if you have a criminal history or are white trash/ghetto trash etc do NOT expect to win. They don't want you to be the face of HGTV.

          • can we say discrimination?! I have horrible credit because I became disabled after taking out college loans and had to live on credit cards for 3 years while fighting for disability. So I'll never win, regardless of the kind of person I am, I have poor credit so I shouldn't even bother, even though I would use the money to send my husband to school so he can get a better job and better my life, even though he is a landscaping and designing WHIZ. Enabling peoples lives to get better is far too much of a calling for HGTV i guess. Just making sure the people who already can afford a mortgage, to buy new homes and live the good life that HGTV symbolizes and people like me can just dream of.

sweet on March 23, 2010 at 10:26 pm
          • This comment makes me angry personally. These homes are fabulous, but the reason most people enter is because of the money so they can build a home they can afford to live in. i dont' think that HGTV really believes the people who win these homes will actually be able to live in them, which is why I personally believe they do credit checks on winners before they give the home to them. There is nothing wrong with people taking the money as a prize because many are in so much debt they have lost their homes and can hardly make it day to day because of the vast amount of unemployment.

It really is a fantastic area for her son, who has autism, to bloom with the arts. When we are gracious and heartfelt, there are always blessings, big and small. I wish her family love and warmth in their new home!

azgal on March 16, 2010 at 3:37 pm
    • Why do you think she doesn't need it? How do you know that she doesn't have a hefty mortgage? No mortgage payments is something I think we could all dream about. I have a home is it paid for no do I struggle with mortgage payments homeowners insurance and taxes yes. Not to mention raising four children at 52. Yes I have a home and I am grateful. Myra won and as far as I am concern that in itself makes her a deserving winner.

        • Thank you AliB I have been creating these little wonders for about 3 years now. These babies are made for adults and I have made many childless people feel comfort. i call it "Cuddle therapy. My babies have been adopted from people all over the world from the serious doll collector to people who just enjoy holding a baby as they feel very real as well.

I do agree that HGTV wants us all to enjoy the whole exsperence of the sweepstakes. With only one winner you can't just be in it to win. There is much more to it than just exsperiancing the win but embrace the journey as well. Since I have been watch HGTV and since i entered this sweepstakes ( my 1st. ) I have realized so much. Like one of the other posters said (and I truly apologize for not remembering who it was ) but stop and smell the flowers in your own back yard.

Which goes way beyond the flowers in someone else s garden.

    • my husband and I became homeowners at a very young age, because believe it or not it was cheaper to buy a condo then pay rent for an appartment where we lived…we didn't have a lot of income but our credit was good and we worked our butts off to pay our mortgage, just as we would have if had been renting something….our credit has gotten a lot worse and I am a stay at home mom…my husband is a sole bread winner and doesn't make a ton of money….we still managed to buy a house last year….and my husband depends on his overtime to pay for this mortgage..we are very frugal and don't buy expensive things, but just because we are homeowners doesn't mean that we are rich by any means…if you are responsible, try to save a little bit of money here and there and take care of your credit, even with a steady lower income you can still afford to buy something…so don't blame people for being responsible and for saving money!!! I know plenty of people who can't afford to buy a house and live in appartments because they HAD to buy brand new cars, have dozens of maxed out store credit cards and who could care less about saving money. Of course there are also those people like single parents, or truly low income people (but I doubt any of those would be on the computer blogging) who never got a break in life and who would have truly deserved this more than anyone…but it's not in our hands to decide who wins, so there is no reason to even complain about it.

    • I can't believe how mean-spirited people can be. That Lady wasn't handed those homes. Didn't you listen at all? She got herself educated, and earned them, she didn't bewail the fact when she lost her home and belongings, and wait for someone to save her like a lot of the wailing bloggers did. She got back on the horse, and restructered her life. I'm sure that if she had pity-parties like the bitter people on this blog have, she never would have accomplished what she did with her life, and her son's life. Good for you Myra, you deserve to get a break in life. God helps those who help themselves. Can't we find pleasure in someone else's joy? If not, then we are undeserving.

AnneEliseSouth on March 16, 2010 at 6:36 pm
      • This has to be the saddest thing I have ever seen…How can you people come on here and talk the way that you do? This lady was deserving…she won this home fair and square rather you want to believe it or not. It's done. It's over. Ms. Myra won and you should be happy for her. That's why people like you don't win…That's why people like you should not win. This woman has been in this world a lot longer than some of us and has probably gone through many trials in her life…more than what was spoken about. Didn't your parents teach you to respect your elders?

CONGRATS to you Ms. Myra! I am so very happy for you =)

        Country_Bumpkin on March 16, 2010 at 7:25 pm
        • congrads indeed but don't judge people who are simply saying that we're tired of seeing people who already have what they need win. She's got a freaking doctorate, just like you said. She can afford to buy a house. I know many who can't afford to even buy a junker car because they can't find anything that pays more than $8 an hour even though they have a college diploma, yet they have families to take care of. These same people hope and dream of a day when they will be blessed even though they don't deserve it. I guess in your eyes going to school makes you deserving. I have helped my community, worked with street kids, even been run out of small towns for being devoted to helping the poor instead of following the whims of the lovely rich people who don't want them in their churches because they swear or don't wear nice clothes. I spent my entire childhood caring for two elderly grandparents, one who was blind the other who had massive strokes and heart attacks. One couldn't even bath herself let alone go to the bathroom and wipe her own butt. I have also worked with Autistic kids, MR's and at risk kids helping them get works kills and help them get into group homes and survive while in them. I also am a therapeutic foster parent for kids with ODD who are too violent to be placed in normal foster homes. But people like me aren't deserving because we didn't get to go to college because of our disabilities and now can't pass the test of all those who think we need to be "deserving" to win a prize like this so we don't make the station look bad. Currently the home I was living in was owned by my blind grandfather and it's now being taken by creditors because I can't pay the private student loans I was forced to take out because he made too much money for me to qualify for financial aid. I make $579 a month in SSi because I claimed it after I turned 18 and haven't been able to "work" for the full 7 years in order to qualify for full disability but am too disabled to work full time. I have no hope of being able to save any money as my rent is $500 a month for a small two bedroom apt, not counting my utilities and diapers and what not. I was told I couldn't have kids or I wouldn't have been more careful so this wouldn't have happened to me. I work so hard to help those around me, and feel so overwhelmed when I see people who are doing good things but they are the only ones people like you claim are "worthy" of being blessed with help, when they don't truly need it. I just pray she blesses someone with the 2 homes she already owns.

      • The last time I checked we live in America and we all have the same opportunity to be successful,
if you are broke and do not own your own home or are uneducated then YOU are to blame no one else… that is part of the problem with our country now we have grown lazy and only want what is handed to us, it is called work for a reason… how totally rude and selfish for someone to post some of the garbage I have seen on here. This women has every right to win whether she owns 15 homes really is not even the question… grow up and get a life and stop wishing for a hand out instead of taking responsibility and creating your destiny…..

        • I really don't think that most of the negative comments are about her at all.. She seems to be a great person. I think it is a result of the society and time we live in. The recession, however caused , has brought deep feelings to the surface from people of all backgrounds and all income levels. I think people are just fed up with our government and the things they are trying to enforce and every time Katrina is mentioned those feelings come to the surface probally because of the political correctness that has surrounded it. It's really not about her at all. She is as deserving as any other person. We all have the same opportunity in life. Some have more things to overcome that others but we all can make our lives the best it can be.

          • I do like your comment but don't feel that the comment that we all have the same opportunity in life is true. You look at her son, he doesn't have the same opportunities you have. I was born with multiple disabilities and though I tried to put myself through school and fight to work I can't make it through a day despite the massive amount of meds and even surgeries I've had. I try so hard to not feel this bitterness towards all these people who just insist everyone has the same opportunity when it is posted that they do in fact do background checks on the people who win before they are given the house so they don't make the network look bad.

    • Your a VERY MEAN person!! Just because she has a home surely DOES NOT make her a true owner the true owner is the BANK until she pays the mortgage off. Then it will be her home that goes for any of us.And if HGTV came to my door and you seen this beautiful home I'm in you shouldn't assume anything I'm losing it like alot of other people! My husband had a $35,000 dollar salary cut so I'm being forced out of my home we can no longer pay for by the bank that truly owns the place just because you make a monthly mortgage payment doesn't mean you own ANYTHING!!! And last I knew HGTV never stated that this was a home to win for renters only! Its a dream home to win for anyone its not exclusive ! We all have bills over our heads like renters probably more!! Be happy for her, GOD does NOT like UGLY!!!!

    • Last I heard this was a sweepstakes for ANYONE to enter, didn't hear it was one for apartment dwellers ONLY!!! Let me tell you just because someone states they own a home does NOT mean they do the bank does and can kick you put at anytime for missing a payment! The only difference between owners and renters is a few grand to put down on a house and ok credit ,but you never own it till the very last mortgage payment!!!! So I suggest you and your hater bloggers save a little and pay your bills to get some credit and wow, you'll be in over your heads like the rest of us now top that off with the rest of everything else to pay and you'll find your broke like the rest of us. Its a DREAM HOME for ALL to enter!!!

caryn on March 17, 2010 at 11:35 am
    • It sounds to me like she didn't win but they "picked" her. Besides being a doctor with at least two houses (like she "needs" another house or because she is too poor to ever buy one she deserves to get this one), her profile is about the best "politcally" they could find. Who can argue against an old black woman with an autistic child who lost her home in hurricane Katrina? If anyone says anything about it there will be a dozen different groups mad at them. When I was a kid the restaurant where my mother worked had a contest to give away a new car. The owner and manager were up all night looking through the "entries" to find the ticket that belonged to the person that they wanted to give the car to, who happened to be the Chief of Police. Another "random" winner…

No Illusions. on March 17, 2010 at 3:52 pm
      • Wow! How very hateful! "Old Black Woman"?? How patronizing.

Savannah on March 17, 2010 at 9:48 pm
      • Shame on you!!! What an ignorant thing to say — re-read what you've written, and just maybe you'll realize why your story wasn't told – How would you be described? Do you have a child? – I can just see the owner and manager going through 40+ million entries to find the entry submitted by the chief of police — I'll bet he had a Doctorate in Law Enforcement…

How many Doctors have won the big prize – maybe you know? What makes you think that a person who has received a Doctorate in Education or any professoin for that matter, is wealthy?

One question, if you had been the LUCKY one, would you have moved in and made this 1.5 million dollar house your home? Those are a lot of taxes & ongoing expenses even for doctors — plus the house would definitely require a house-keeper (4 thousand square feet –WOW).

The best thing to say is very simple, CONGRATULATIONS Dr. Myra lewis !!!

OR say nothing – either way the out-come WILL NOT CHANGE…

You may be the LUCKY one the next time…be king & count your blessings..They could all be taken away in an instant… and send Dr Lewis and her talented son an opology – your luck may improve!

      • Actually, I thought of that too…until I remembered that the winner gets a huge $500,000 check! Well, that definitely helps pay any taxes! Personally, I don't know all the rules, but if I won eventually I would sell that monster and buy another house else with the proceeds about half the size. Then I'd just have a lot more money left over to retire with!

    • i agree, not only does she own one home, she also owns a rental property. I'm happy for her, dont' get me wrong, but I"m tired of seeing upper class people win. I mean seriously, She has a BS, a Masters in Ed, and a Doctorate. She didn't need a hand out. I do very similar work to hers, and I was less than 20k a year, all my school loans are in default, and I am currently not even stable in a home as my husband lost his job and I became disabled, but still volunteer. I really am starting to believe they do a credit check on those they allow to be included in the drawing so they know they won't go bankrupt and waste the house on some crack whore or poor person who will just destroy it in their eyes.

Sure she's been hit by Katrina, but she's a doctor and makes a lot of money from not only that but she owns a property that she rents out to people and has one son who is autistic which I understand. But what about someone who doesn't have a home to live in or someone who got hit by the economy now raising three kids with little money to feed and support and trying to survive here in this place we call America. If it was someone who really does deserve it then I would be more then happy to say congratulations, but she is not one them.

You dont know how blessed you are …and how you would live on the streets if you could have your child back.I consider you a blessed person. and may God continue to bless you

  24. Here I sat, in your home town, Myra, listening to them say the winner was in New Orleans. You are being blessed and you are such a blessing. Your son is a fine person. I am very happy for you. This has turned out well.

  25. Congrats and best wishes on winning your dream home! I hope you are able to move into the home and HGTV will do an update on you living there. It would be fantastic to see you enjoying your new life there!

  26. Myra you said that you have never won anything before, but from the looks of your house you have now and the one you had before in Katrina , your life has already been full of nice things(gifts), Congratulations! God has definately been with you and you have definately earned this miracle, or you wouldn't have it. I'm sure god has a purpose!

debbbie on March 16, 2010 at 1:07 am
    • Debbbie…you know that I don't have a beef with you and overall your comment seems positive, but I have to question your comment of her home/life being "full of nice things (gifts)"…Miss Myra seems like the type of person who has earned those nice things in her life…they aren't necessarily gifts. She has done a lot in her life.

            Diana R on March 16, 2010 at 12:15 pm
          • I agree with you. I think this particular giveaway was a setup! It's just too much of a coincidence that Myra M. Lewis was picked as the winner, especially since she already is a Ph.D., and lives in a nice house in a nice neighborhood. Much too much of a coincidence! What about people living in apartments–Don't they deserve to win a nice house too?? And, in my opinion, HGTV had already interviewed her long before Monday night when HGTV arrived on her doorstop. Also, if you do a seach for DR. MYRA M. LEWIS OF NEW ORLEANS, LA, the search comes up with HER name being connected to the DEEP SOUTH CENTER FOR FOR ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE. I think HGTV already knew about Myra and purposely picked her to be the winner. It's just too much of a coincidence!! However, I do wish her all the happiness in this DH, but I only wish HGTV could have been a little bit more honest in picking a winner.

            Barbara P on March 16, 2010 at 9:33 pm
          • I disagree — the info you found out about Myra Lewis could have been easily found by HGTV before the ambush as well. I think she was ambushed earlier than last night, like other years, but that doesn't mean she was hand-picked to win.

    • VERY upscale home. And how many people are "camera presentable" should someone knock on their door "out of the blue". Katrina survivor. Autistic son. Seems to me that Myra was NOT randomly selected. Shame on you HGTV!.

So phony on March 16, 2010 at 5:11 am
      • I bet there were millions of people who were at home tonight "camera presentable" just waiting for Jamie to knock on their doors.

        Linda P on March 16, 2010 at 7:11 am
        • agreeing with linda and adding that some people are "camera presentable" at all times…I know growing up when i visited my grandma's farm anytime you were downstairs- even for breakfast- you had to be fully dressed presentable and even if i wasn't going anywhere my hair had to be in braids or pony tails…and that was on a farm.

adisneyfamily on March 16, 2010 at 7:43 pm
          • I agree — after all she is a Southern lady born and bred, and was probably taught from an early age that a lady is presentably dressed, coiffed, and made up from the moment she rises in the morning to the moment she retires for the night!

Cindy on March 18, 2010 at 3:12 am
      • Cindy – Background checks are to keep people that like whine and cry about how unfair life is instead of being joyfully surprised and great-full for their many blessings. We are all where we have put ourselves.

Geeze! how politically correct can HGTV be????? Just lucky I guess?

  30. I agree with Cindy's comment on the way they notify the winner. Too staged – I would rather hear the winner's actual initial reaction to a phone call and then an interview after the fact. Anyway, she's a very lucky person and I wish her and her family much happiness. Congratulations!

Nicole on March 16, 2010 at 1:09 am

  31. OK a great person to win the home….I agree. But come on, 40,000,000 entries and it just happens to be a person in New Orleans that lost their home in Katrina???? I call foul 100%, last time I send my time on a HGTV promo! I know how these things work and yes HGTV has some say in who wins, but if I wanted a story like this, I would just watch the Life Time network! Plus at least spend the extra cash and risk to pull it off live!

Hopeful on March 16, 2010 at 1:24 am
      • If it is going to be based on this – finding the best candidate just let us know. I spent $154 of money I didn't have on stamps. I was hoping it was random, but it does just seem too good to be true. How can they have her resume up already and know what a wonderful person she is. I can't afford to enter by mail in the future if they are "picking" only good people for their winners :)

sour grapes on March 16, 2010 at 3:05 am
        • Well, if you had been following the blog all along, we knew that the statistics from last years enteries was that there was a 98% chance that a mail in would NOT be picked…the numbers were done several times…I'm sorry that you wasted your money.

adisneyfamily on March 16, 2010 at 3:28 am
          • I typically do not rely on people posting on blogs for trusted info, I just read the sweepstakes rules and took everything to be true. Maybe HGTV should spend the results show showing the random selection and just the name of the person selected randomly and that is it. It seems this obviously fake "ambush" thing they are selling is contributing to the paranoia that it is not random, and perpetuating the sour grapes toward this nice woman. Who really wants the details of the winner so we can compare and complain. We all wanted to win and is the winner every really "good" enough. Shoving it down our throats after everyone was hoping and dreaming is really the thing contributing to all this negativity I believe.

sour grapes on March 16, 2010 at 4:21 am
          • If you don't trust people for numbers then you could have crunched them yourself to figure out the odds…they gave out last years total number of enteries and number of mail in enteries…it was roughly the same numbers this year so people were able to get a general ball park idea. I am not saying don't mail in votes…but don't mail in more than you are willing to lose. In the future 'you can always mail one entry once a week in hopes that if a mail in bin is picked you may be the winner. If I have heard right, for as long as there has been online entering, a mail in bin has never one. The way that they select with random numbered bins and balls seems about as fair as it can get with this type of sweepstakes.

adisneyfamily on March 16, 2010 at 1:04 pm
          • I'm loving that so many people are saying they think it was a fix and not random! This process could not have BEEN more random. I'm really loving it when they say they won't be entering again! GOOD!! Move around!!! And take your mean-spirited, jealousy-fiilled hearts with you! That's just a few more entries that will won't need to be counted next year! The things people come up with!

        • Ouch… I did that the first year and learned my lesson… this time I entered on-line for free, besides what's meant to be will be imho!..

Traci A. Barr on March 16, 2010 at 3:38 am
        • Dear sour grapes: I thank you for your honest name and am sorry you spent so much money. If you had been paying attention you would have seen that the bins for mail-ins were very small compared to the vast bins of the free on-line entrees. I believe God sent down a jolt to prompt Mr. Samples to press that space bar at that particular instant. Myra Lewis is a most deserving winner. If you want to know why, I'm sure other bloggers will enlighten you before I get to post my comment at the end of this blog. Beware of the cynical "Tims'" of this world.

  38. Does anybody here realize that this just shows this contest was set up and none of us "normal" people ever had a shot at it? She was in Katrina. Autistic child. Pillar of the community. Lost everything so this is sooooo inspirational. Great drama for TV right?
That's fine if it was RANDOM. But, something about this tells me that its not. That's okay though. The folks in Katrina are going to ride that gravy train for as long as they possibly can while the truly needy people, the ones who can't provide for their families because they lost everything because of a job and can't find another job since nobody is hiring right now, or those who are about to lose everything due to a loss of job or something like that, the HONEST people who entered this contest hoping to win thinking it was truly a random drawing get nothing, and really by the looks of this, never had a shot at all.
Could the contest have been random? Sure. And if it was more power to the winner. And I'm not blaming Myra at all. She has worked hard and went through some tough things. I'm more blaming HGTV for making this so called "random" drawing look like something that was set up from the beginning.

Perhaps it's the negative energy that surrounds you that doesn't let in the good. I'll say a prayer that somehow, blessings and good things do somehow come your way – sounds like no-one could be more deserving, honest or needy.

      • They had it up already, because she wasn't 'ambushed' tonight, but a long time ago. So, they had time to do the interview and put together a story to make the special interesting.
No, I don't think she was handpicked. I think that they interview a person to get a good story out of them to promote the concept. HGTV isn't dumb enough to report that the winner has any bad traits.
        Better luck next year!

Are you implying that all people entering this contest are not honest?
Not sour, but bitter, grapes. Hope you will not ever watch HGTV again. Or be on this blog again. Go back to your soap operas.
Oooh, what a terrible thing for me to say. Forgive me. I'm tired .

      • I don't know what part of the country that your from, but where I live companies are NOT hiring. It takes months to get unemployment and what do you do in the mean time. Oh I think it's called food stamps and food pantries. Maybe you should get a reality check, and continue watching soaps because from the looks of it, that's your reality.

    • Why do you poor losers think that someone who you think is "more worthy" is less worthy than yourselves to win? That is like saying someone who has worked hard all their lives to get what they have whether it be from long hours, double jobs, budgeting, making sacrifices, paying and studying hard for higher education etc. and becoming successful in others eyes, is less worthy than one who does not have a decent work ethic and expects handouts from others and if unemployed waits to look for another job until all their unemployment and extended unemployment runs out. I pray you will get a wake up call ! You reap what you Sow!

    • I am sure there are many special life stories among the entries of which we have already read about on these blogs so the chances of having one of them win would be just as good as those who do not have a dramatic stories to share. So why do you think it was rigged? Look at the past winners lives, most of them did not have as dramatic lives and they won.

    • This scam of a so-called contest had about as much randomness and veracity as a WWE wrestling event. It is insulting to everyone who participated for HGTV to claim otherwise. Funny how after 40,000,000 entries were drawn from randomly, a person with the most heart-warming and politically correct claim to victim status (Katrina) happens be the winner. Give me a break. Used to be a fan of HGTV now probably won't be watching anymore.

Ms. Myra nor does HGTV need to endure nasty comments from people who do not understand what Random selection means. My hope for you and others that think like you need to consult a cleryperson for guidance as to why you all are upset that someone other than you won this home. I hope that Myra nor any of her family read this nastiness that is spewing out peoples mouths because its unjust and not needed. There is Freedom of Speech and then there is unwanted negativity. I bid all Myra haters Good Day!!!!

    • I know we were warned that this negativity would happen, but it still surprises me. I said to my husband this morning that it would be hard to find a more deserving person — a woman who has worked hard to provide a good life for herself and her autistic son, only to have it all taken away by Katrina and starting all over again at the age of 60. Sure there are probably people out there that might be even needier — someone (I can't remember who at the moment) had a great comment on the last blog about how there will always be people better as well as worse off than you — but I am baffled by those who think she is undeserving. So I say, congratulations Myra! I am ready to dream again, just like you, reneelovesgreen — on to the next giveaway!

      C&E on March 16, 2010 at 2:27 pm
      • I've read (and posted) negative comments. It's not about this woman personally or "deserving" to win. The problem many have is with the fake look of the "ambush" and the fact that the winner's story is so perfect for a TV show. I've suggested that HGTV may have picked several names and decided the winner after background checks. On TV it's all about making nice happy stories. Not reality.

It would have been a hoot to see a real live ambush and the winner turns out to be a drunk couch potato – just my weird sense of humour.

Jennifer on March 16, 2010 at 4:07 pm
        • I was not talking about those who complained about the process… I was talking about a few who were being nasty, calling names and making racist comments…. thanks for your comment….

reneelovesgreen on March 16, 2010 at 5:39 pm
          • well, when some get upset bc they did not get what they wanted ( everyone feels entitled to it because it is sweepstakes…I guess) they cannot hold the disappointment on leash and get bitter, nasty.
i think that everyone is deserving to win. If there is a contest, then everyone deserves to win because it is based only on good luck. And I think that everyone deserves good luck. How do one measure who deserves more in sweepstakes? If it would be a contest based on many values, knowledge, personality, need —then it would be probably even worse ;-)

adisneyfamily on March 16, 2010 at 5:59 pm
        • Yes, Jennifer, I believe you have the right to express your opinion about the reality of the ambush and even the randomness of the selection process. As the others have mentioned, the comments I have a problem with are the ones that attack the winner, and even her son, personally.

I didn't see last year's show, but I believe others have mentioned the winner came to the door in her pajamas (or was it the year before?). Personally, I would be mortified if this happened to me — although I think like you I would get a guilty chuckle out of seeing an inebriated winner come to the door! Memo to self for next year — don't start celebrating until after the HGTV ambush team has left!

          C&E on March 16, 2010 at 10:52 pm
        • Hi Jennifer,
The rules are very plain and do say HGTV has the right to pick a winner and do a background check and pick another if they feel the winner doesn't reflect well on the sponsors. They lay it all out. So, it isn't a conspiracy or fake, they just do what they say they can do
Paraphrasing 2 of my previous posts: Shock is individual…it looks different for each of us…just cause I would be screaming and jumping up and down doesn't mean that she would. I have to say that a lot of people waiting to see if they won (like me) took the time to clean house and be coifed and dressed just in case. The show isn't live. The prize was awarded by ambush earlier, probably last week in order for HGTV to have all the paperwork signed. Last year I thought it was really live too, but learned a lot this year! And actually I know people who look just as nice any time of night or day. Not me! Now can go back to comfy clothes til next year! My two cents!

  44. Congratulations Myra for winning all though I feel the Dream Home Give Away could've benefited someone who deserves it or who has gone through a lot. Not someone who owns a home already and is a doctor and owns a property and makes cold cash, but someone who has a family and has never owned a home or lost one or someone who wants to enrich the lives of their children, but cant because they just dont have the money to do that. Im not hating and I think you are one lucky person, but I think it wasn't the right choice. If you really deserved it I would've been happy with the HGTV Dream Home giveaway winner.

Myra HAS gone through alot. Myra Has lost a home. Myra will benefit with this blessing God has allowed her to receive for He is in control of ALL things. Myra DOES have a family and a wonderful one at that. Myra accomplished her desire to ENRICH her family through hard work and discipline.

    • Myra deserved to win. She put in alot of time to get an education and worked to get what she has today. Her house was destroyed by Katrina i'm sure she had insurance that paid for her new house, that doesn't make her rich or any less deserving. I think those that have no home, never had a home or lost their home shouldn't be handed a home, they should get off their butts and stop whining. Get an education, get a job and work for it, like the rest of us.

I agree about whining, but there is a lot of people who maybe cannot find a job. Not bc they are lazy, but bc it is not there at the moment. Not everyone can get education. Maybe they cannot learn as well. BUt they can do other work. Every work is honorable. This world is not easy. Cannot put people in boxes, judge them by boxes….

  45. This winner was a terrible hand pick from HGTV, why select someone who will not be moving into the dream home isn't that the whole point not to have a vacant house, how will she pay her current mortgage and her new property taxes and utilities, how exciting for the state another foreclosed house in New Mexico. This winner is already doing good work in a community that actually needs her and has a nicer house than over 50% of Americans. I do not understand why people find her so tearjerking, for crying out loud even her autistic son is attaining a college degree. It would be nice to see someone win that actually needs the home and will move in and appreciate it.

      • If you don't have the means to own a home, I doubt you would have been able to pay the huge amount of taxes you would owe even after you handed over the $500k to the IRS.

Jennifer on March 16, 2010 at 2:49 pm
        • Many many homeowners have a mortgage= borrowed money. It depends how much who wants to risk having a mortgage in this economy. We own a house, but we were reasonable…nothing lavish.
Very young people who are starting, who have little children might not have the money to have a house. It is not because they are lazy, but because the life is not that simple, easy.
It is true that the huge tax is not easily affordable. Maybe HGTV can start building more modest home – and then they can make 2 or 3 and give those away?
This home is enormous. Imagine the cleaning….what I only did not like on it was the choice of tiles in kitchen and fireplace. I just did not like those. The floorplan is nice, suitable for big family or someone who will have a lot of guests over. If I would win it, I would bring my 84 years old mom who lives in other continent, and I would take care of her….cannot do it in our small house. Just dreaming :-)
But I am not bitter or even sad. I wish people well.

What a strange cooment about — ordinary — you've made.. Don't be too bitter, — it could hurt you..

Check-out (again) the sponsors of this high-class sweepstakes. The welfare department of the US federal government is not one of them..

.My goodness– how much of her current home do you get to see?? I'm sad if you entered because you lost your home in a natural disaster… I sincerely hope, that was not the case… Didn't you enter to win?

I'd be interested to learn how you found out what Dr. Myra Lewis's net worth is..

Alfred on March 21, 2010 at 1:09 am
    • Someone that needs the home? Either they can't afford their own home, due to lack of a career or education or they weren't responsible enough to hold onto their home and lost it. Why would that person be deserving of a handout. It's us hardworking educated people that work hard all our life for everything we have that deserve it.

      Linda P on March 16, 2010 at 7:31 am
      • Are you not aware of the state of the economy right now and number of people who are losing jobs and homes? It is not due to being uneducated, lazy or irresponsible. Life happens to everyone that is out of their control sometimes. Everyone has a story in some shape or form: rich, poor, sick, healthy, educated or not. There are many wealthy people living in their beautiful homes who are lonely and miserable. To all of us who have lost this dream; take the things you thought would make your life better from winning and apply it to your daily life i.e spending more time with family throw a dream home loser dinner party, plant a container garden, recyle more. The sky is the limit. Make life work for you to the best of your ability.

luba on March 23, 2010 at 7:51 pm
    • I totally agree. The house she has now is probably paid for, given the fact that FEMA and the federal government paid billions to survivors of Katrina. If the winner is "hand picked", why not pick someone who through no fault of their own lost everything due to loss of job, fire, forcloser, etc. If the winner is picked for a sob story or tv rateings, I'm sure we all have stories just as sad. Isn't that the reason we all entered? I'm a single mom with three kids still living at home and we're living pay check to pay check like a lot of us. Because of things that have happened to my family in the past, we've lost everything several times through no fault of our own. Try living in a homeless shelter. That's alot of fun. Try having your oldest son sexually molest your youngest daughter and told by the DA that you have to relocate, because if your son ever gets out of jail that he will probably kill you and your daughter. Try getting help to relocate when there are NO funds available to relocate you. Now there's a story for you Jamie.

guest on March 16, 2010 at 12:13 pm
      • WHO on this earth (the real world) doesn't have a sob story? Realize also that a home with 2 refrigerators, 16 feet high ceilings, 2 laundry rooms, plus more than 3 thousand feet of living space etc. doesn't stop real life from happening. This is much much more than '90%' of the world's population will ever have.

'Maybe' we'll be LUCKY the next time..

        Congratulations Dr. Lewis !!

Alfred on March 16, 2010 at 3:29 pm

It might be helpful if you could go down to New Orleans and see that 5 years after Katrina, there still are people living in 8 x 15 foot FEMA trailers.

When I read some of these truly uninformed posts, I'm really starting to see how the schools have failed our country. Not to mention, you people really believe what the Talking Heads tell you every night.!!! You're breaking your necks to low-rate Dr. Lewis, make herr seem underserving, but the truth is, she is more deserving and will more than likely because of herr life-skills and her education, be able to hold on to the home.

        • Please keep in mind that Katrina wasn't the "ONLY" hurracaine that left people homeless. I lived through Agnes in 1970. We lost everything. Did we get help??? No. Look at the poor people in Florida. Do you see them whinning. Please. Just because people still live in FEMA trailers 5 years after the fact doesn't make them any different. At least they have a roof over their heads. Why don't you look at the thousands of homeless people living on the streets in every city in the US. I volunteer to help find these people in the dead of winter who through no fault of their own are homeless and live under bridges and in bus and train stations. We make sure that we get them into a warm place and have a warm meal. Now that,s a tragedy. The federal government did more for the the people in New Orlenes after Katrina then they've ever done for the the homeless. Please keep that in mind. Maybe you need to volueenteer at a soup kitchen just to get some perspective on the truely needy.

      • Hi guest, I'm truly sorry for the troubles you have. I wish life was easy for all. I hope your life changes for the better and that you and your daughters stay safe and well.
That said, I also want to say that according to her video, her home is not paid off. She had to take out a mortgage after she was 60. She would probably die before a 20 or 30 year loan would be paid off. There goes any hope for any retirement after many years of working. Also, she moved across the river to avoid the flood zone again. I can't even imagine what she went through, and yet she was able to get through it all.
Am I disappointed that I didn't win? You bet! Am I going to begrudge someone who did? No way. That reflects on me, not them.
As I've told others, if you don't trust, don't play. If you play next year and you win, I hope no one passes judgment upon you for the things that have happened to you and your family. That would be grossly unfair and uncalled for. Take care…and may life turn around for you.

    • Do you really believe anyone who doesn't have a home can afford to move here with no job or ability to pay future taxes and upkeep?

DSSLatte on March 16, 2010 at 3:31 pm
      • no. cannot.

luba on March 23, 2010 at 7:54 pm
    • What could you possibly know about what lies in the heart of this winner? And who do you think has the right to ask personal questions about her financial situation?? Take a long look at your judgemental self in the mirror.

    • Shame on you!! This is NOT a sweepstakes associated with the government welfare department!!!

Start a home business — Become a Fund-raiser – Do something to help 90% of the world population who will never see 2+ million dollars, yet alone a kitchen with 2 refrigerators and a ceiling 16 feet high . Maybe the next time you'll be the big winner, in the mean time —

      CONGRATULATIONS Dr. Myra Lewis !!!

HGTV DESERVES NO SHAME – They are highly educated professionals (maybe a few with Doctoorate Degrees in business) who must be held accountable for — RIGHT – a hell of a lot!!

Thank your God for all your blessings — it could all be taken away in an instant !

Enjoy the dream and the entertainment they so brilliantly provide !! Thank you HGTV….

    • Most people do not enter this contest to actually take possession of the homes because the average person would never be able to afford the taxes. That's right, Uncle Sam wants his cut of the pie. A win like this is like cash in the bank and the government treats it as income so you would be expected to pay the dreaded INCOME tax on your new home – not just property taxes. The house and all that went with it, including the car, was estimated to be about $2 million. The tax bill would be around $700,000. Think most people could afford to pay that? No. In most cases, they take the cash prize, pay the obligatory taxes and with what is left buy a house of their own chosing or pay off their existing mortgage. Those whom you think should win because they do not have a home and need one are not going to be able to pay a tax bill of that magnitude and, therefore, more than likely would not be moving to the actual dream home.

    • I heard Myra say she was going to live in the home. Do you know her personally? If not then you do not know if she can afford the taxes and her current mortgage. My bet is she will rent her home out as she did the other home to live in NM. Whatever she decides to do is her business. It is her home and no amount of whining is going to change that. Whatever Myra has it is because she is a hard worker not a whiner. And if her autistic son is thriving so well that just shows another well done job by Myra. You may be ashamed of HGTV but it is people like you that makes me ashamed to even have Myra read the blogs. Get over it Myra won and jealousy looks good on NO ONE!!!

      Keep Dreamin

  47. It may be rigged, I don't know…What I do know is she is TRULY blessed. I hope she was sincere that she really wants to live here. I am a 46 year old veteran of Albuquerque, and I know how awesome it is to live here. I also toured the house and it is so totally amazing!! Blessings!!

    • I seriously doubt she'll move. Why would she leave her circle of friends and family? I hope she gets all the cash possible out of the deal.

  50. Congratulations Myra! I have watched all of your videos. You look like a beautiful woman who has truly done great things and truly deserves this house. Most importantly, you fully appreciate this house. It would be a great place for you and your son…his artwork would be a great addition to this house. I truly hope that you are able to keep the house and live in it…hopefully, you are able to sell your current home and have enough from that and the $500k to pay off the taxes to be able to keep this beautiful dream…especially as you say that it already is very "Myra" and that you would have picked out the decorations like chandeliers yourself. If you are reading over this blog, I am sure that you will find some negative people but if you stay strong and there are a lot of us on here who would like to continue to know how you are doing and encourage you. I am so happy for you and had tears of joy in my eyes as I watched your videos here on the computer afterwards.

    • adisney you are right on the money as usual. I too am very happy for Myra.

TexasTwoStep on March 16, 2010 at 1:57 am
    • Well said, adisneyfamily. I really hope Myra is not reading over the blog. Before the reveal, people wanted someone deserving to win — now they say this must be a fixed contest because she is deserving and has a great story. You really can't win with some people.
