You are wracking your brains and crunching the numbers in an attempt to decipher my very straightforward clues. And still you stumble.
So today, I share a simple clue: a photo of a cow. Did you know that when European dairy cows were brought to America in 1611, they helped end severe starvation in the Jamestown Colony?
Ready, set, go!

Oh, thank you, Mary — a straightforward clue! Right off the bat I'll say Virginia because of your Jamestown reference, others come to mind as well — Vermont, New York, Wisconsin, and California are all contenders. Off I go to do a little more research!
Ok, its dairy cow. The others are stamps a wrong way sign, rice bowls and chops sticks, a cartier sign, (don't give up), a compass, and a jar of honey….. not to mention a few number puzzles… ????
Haven't a clue… But, Colorado sounds PEFERCT!!
I've been following this discussion and have been smiling along the way. Throwing into the discussion…..
"Cow" – maybe the planned community for 2011 was previously a dairy farm?
So far, every clue has matched my guess. Think everybody needs to review comments from Mary and Jack T. during the 2010 home and match their comments with Mary's clues.
I'm going to hold my cards for a while, but will share a hint to my thinking: confluence.
Ed
Did you see densteve's post? He mentions a spot in Vermont that was a former cattle farm (dairy?) which was up for auction but the auction has been suspiciously postponed. He also said he found a realtor who claimed to have leased a furnished house to HGTV in Burlington.
How about Idaho? They have cows, bees(honey), and silver mines!!!
I still think it is Washington State with all the clues like wrong way is in washington if you go to google press images and put seattle washington wrong way and you go down 4 rows and the picture of wrong way will be the 4th one like the clue we have and the honey is #1 in seattle washington and cows
We also have a pretty good China town…or International district that serves all asian cultures. I think it's in Washington.
Yeap, I do blieve it is Virginia, the clues European, Jamestown, and the word Cartier r(James Cartier) a seaman from France are pretty good clues.
The cow could be a Jersey cow, and the New Jersey coast is refered to as The Gold Coast. So I believe the 2011 Dream Home is going to be in New Jersey. Maybe it will be in the Palisades area.
gOLD Coast is a fairly new term used in the Real Estate world.
Well if I read Mary's clues correctly I know the state and the town the 2011 dream home will be featured in and the clues confirmed where I originally thought the next home would be. Thanks Mary!!____
Okay…..okay…. tell us your original thought, KonaSand!!! Or is it obvious?
The location is in Fish Creek, Door County, Wisconsin.
I think that number we've been looking for is one and that the location is in Delaware, the first state to join the union.
It,s California
It's Delaware….the number we're looking for is one and Delaware was the first state to join the union.
Sounds like Cow springs, Arizona
based on the locations of the Cartier stores, it is either Califormia or Atlanta Ga
OREGON!
What about Reno? Just stab in the dark.
OH, YEA! VIRGINIA CAME RIGHT TO MIND…..AFTER JAMESTOWN.
Well….It seems straightforward if the location is Virginia. How complicated should we make this clue?
Hi…Isn't Oregon the biggest dairy farming state? I was also looking at the spots on the cow and the big black one looks kind of like the outline of the state of New Jersey. I am new to this so I may be way off track trying to figure out the clues.
Wisconsin's official state domestic animal is the dairy cow.
I guess you are mocking us in the first sentence. I can't imagine why you would think they were straightforward.
MARY…. you rock!!! This clue needs to be researched a little more…. Is it New York…. or Virginia…. I am going to follow C&E's advice and Cami&TrackinJack's on how complicated should it be….
New York…… Virginia?????
When European dairy cows arrived in America in 1611, they helped end severe starvation in the Jamestown Colony. The first ice cream parlor opened in New York City in 1776. Reportedly, George Washington liked ice cream so much he ran up a $200 bill for ice cream one summer. In 1812, Dolly Madison served ice cream at a White House inaugural ball.
During Andrew Jackson's presidency, cheese makers presented the President with a large wheel of their finest cheddar cheese. He ordered it put on display in the White House for one year and then invited the citizens of Washington, D.C. to share in eating the cheese at the end of the year.
The first regular shipment of milk by rail – to New York City – occurred in 1841. The first cheese factory in the United States was built in Oneida County, New York in 1851. Development of the first hand-cranked ice cream maker in 1846, the ice cream cone on September 22, 1846, and the waffle cone in 1904, added to the growing popularity of ice cream.
After the New World was settled and markets began to develop for milk in America, dairy breeders began importing dairy cows from Holland. The first Ayrshires were imported into the United States around 1822. A Massachusetts breeder purchased one of the first Holstein cows from a Dutch sailing master at Boston in 1852. Jersey cows were brought into the United States in the 1850's while the first recorded Brown Swiss in America were imported in 1869 and 1870. Dairy cows were eventually kept in or near towns and cities – closer to the growing numbers of people. In the big cities in the early to mid-1800's, dairy cows were often kept in dark unsanitary sheds, sometimes less than 10 feet from where milk, cream, and butter were sold to customers.
Ben Frankin started the postal service-stamp act, is from massacchusetts
It is crazy where all of these clues are leading us….. I still feel like I am chasing my own tail..hehehe..
Funny Renee! I can still picture you chasing it!
Yep…. my dog is getting dizzy, watching me!!! hehe
Renee, you are so funny!
Massachusetts again? I do not know. Maybe VA? I would take that one!
The Holstein cow is depicted on Wisconsin's state quarter (this is a picture of a Holstein cow).
Wisconsin may be the clear winner here. The other states didn't have the cow as their State animal, soooo what are we to do now?
Since the cow isn't wearing a lei and saying Alooooohaaa, I guess we can eliminate Hawaii.
I think I'm willing to go out on a limb here and say you are probably right!
However, the Parker Ranch is among the largest ranches in the United States. It is on the big island of Hawaii. Hawaii has cattle.
Is Mary ever straightforward?
Milk was designated the official state beverage of North Carolina in 1987. Seventeen other states (including bordering states of South Carolina and Virginia) recognize milk as a state symbol. North
Well then it must be Virgina, because in the clue she mentioned Virgina and then Virgina is just north of North Carolina.
The only place that you can see all of the clues in is Wyoming. Think about it.
I knew it! My first guess was Virginia. It's going to be beautiful!
Agree with you Sarah! Also, clue 5 has a postage stamp picture showing a location of someplace in MD, the neighbor state.
Virginia would be so wonderful. It would be perfect for my friend Kristen, she was born there !!!
Holy Cow! When I saw the word "straightforward" in MARY's comment this morning I literally choked on my cereal. Almost one less blogger as a result!
My first thought was Wisconsin, as C&E has also just posted, but we'll see how the plot thickens.
I don't see how the stamps clue fits, or the numbers clues! Must keep digging to find those connections, if they exist.
COOP…. that might mean that you were the first to guess the Dream Home location for the second year!!
The dairy cow is the official state domesticated animal of Wisconsin.
I'll have a chocolate milkshake please.
Wisconsin has the most Dairy cows – Wisconsin is my pick
I think wisconsin is right
Here is that exact cow should we see what Wiki has to say http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holstein_cattle
Thanks for the tip. It is the same cow. The history points to New York –
Black and White cattle were introduced into the US from 1621 to 1664. The eastern part of the State of New York was the Dutch colony of New Netherlands, where many Dutch farmers settled along the Hudson and Mohawk river valleys. They probably brought cattle with them from their native land and crossed them with cattle purchased in the colony.
Rita: Dutch? Holland, Michigan. But I don't think this is where Mary is going with this clue.
Michigan and Wisconsin are sister states. We are connected, in more ways than one.

Is it Carmel By The Sea?
i think its in newyork
Sure looks like it
I think you are right Dee. Going with Carmel as my vote.
My guess too is Carmel by the Sea
Wisconsin is the dairy capital of the United States, and it (the cows should get the credit) produces more milk than any other state. As a result, as I posted earlier, Prairie du Sac hosts the State Cow Chip Throwing Contest on Labor Day weekend.
A less likely link—In 1900 land acquisition for Wisconsin's first state park began. The park became Interstate State Park located in St. Croix Falls. (Numbers from Clue 2?) Hmm, what about the Cartier link? Have to look into that one….
A weak link to "shiny" would be Wisconsin's lesser-known nickname "The Copper State" in reference to the copper mines in the northern part of the state.
Coop: Well, at least we've brought you back to the states in the area that might be the next DH location. Keep sleuthing, dear friend.
The location is plymouth massachusetts
No, the location is Big Sur, California
I'm sorry if you are expecting chocolate you will have to find a brown cow.
That would be a Jersey cow, and they are popular in Vermont!
Well, it gets cold in Vermont, so wearing jerseys would keep them udderly warm! But then the cow in the picture was naked! (Except for one earring). Not even a straw hat like Elsie the Cow use to wear. Sorry, all this sleuthing has made for extreme silliness, I'll go to my room now.
Wisconsin, Coop's first thought and C&E's research of the picture……..
Red Cloud Memorial Park, Black River Falls
Rice Lake is a city in Barron County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin
There is a lot of honey producers and a Honey Rock Camp
and much more……
Should we eliminate Cowlafornia too?
Love your sense of humor, Cowlafornia! Made my day, I'll be chuckling about this one for a while.
NO! cause, It's Big Sur, CA
According to our prim and proper Governor at the minute the correct pronunciation of our state is "Caleefornia".
Lord help us for what he has done so far, and I thought he didn't have a chance of running for another term as Governor, but although I haven't seen an add on TV that says he is running for another term, they imply that he can! Can someone help me with this question? One of my email addresses is charles.barnett18@yahoo.com I have other addresses, so don't be shy! Send me a reply, if I don'tlike it I can always block you from my address. Does that seem a little high handed? Well, sorry, that's the way I am. I don't want to hurt anyone, but I won't be hurt myself either.
the pilgrims landed on plymouth rock in 1620, place plymouth massachusetts, December 11, 1620. You know the pilgrims and the puritans.
The green home is located in Plymouth this year
Hmm, from Clue 2 numbers, how about 1634—explorer Jean Nicolet was the first known European to reach Wisconsin. He was seeking the infamous Northwest Passage.
My thoughts on the clues;
First – "sweet" = honey (too obvious by the picture) so, syrup, candy, chocolate, ice cream, etc.
Second – not ready to reveal my thought process' on the number clues yet
Third – "Shiny" = the first thought would be gold or diamonds, again, too obvious. Gold as a color could refer (considering my thought process on the other clues) to the shiny gold colors of autumn leaves.
Rice bowl – Not sure yet how this one fits into my conclusions of the others, but still searching.
Fourth – Again, not ready to disclose my "numbers" conclusion
Fifth – This is where it starts to come together and make some sort of sense…at least to me. "A pretty picture". Stamps. A picture postcard. The phrase "picture perfect postcard". But also, Mary says "I can almost taste the flapjacks and maple syrup now". Maple syrup? sweet? picture postcard? shiny?
Sixth – Ah-ha! A cow! Milk. Ice cream. Ben and Jerry's. Vermont. Kinda goes along with my other far reaching conclusions from the deep recesses of my cob-webbed brain…maybe?
However, based on the numbers clues, and some slight play on words, I arrived with Colebrook, NH which is just across the Vermont/NH state line of the Connecticut river. So, perhaps somewhere in VT, or is Colebrook correct? Or, perhaps my logic is way off and I should start over or resign from clue deciphering altogether.
I, also, am thinking Vermont, The World's Largest Dairy Breed Association, resides there!
I vote for Vermont as well!
I also made a guess on clue 5 that there might be a possibility of Nashua, NH. Again, perhaps a far reach.
On the Wiki site it also shows a picture of Pualine the cow in front of the Navy building. Perhaps the most famous Holstein was Pauline Wayne who served from 1910 to 1913 as the official presidential pet to the 27th President of the United States, President William Howard Taft. Pauline Wayne lived and grazed on the White House lawn and provided milk for the first family. Pauline Wayne was the last presidential pet cow.
Boy, he was way off course too.
Finger Lakes Wine Country – "a pairing of cheese with wine" – It makes sense that if you're involved
in wineries, dairy farming would follow. A prevalence of dairy farms, creameries, and cheese
products. I'm getting ready to settle back in one of those Adirondack porches and enjoy the
views!!!! (Some of the farms are using Jersey cows.)
California is a major dairy state (remember all those TV commercials!) — don't count it out yet!
The strange canadian cow, what is her name?
Oh my goodness, Mary, how did you know? I LOVE COWS!!!!!! Let me take a wild guess…..NY or VT?????
Ah-ha! Yikes! The cow can go in several different directions for sure.
Here is a photo of the Vermont state flag...http://www.50states.com/flag/vtflag.htm
Yes, it does have a cow on it.
Living the Dream!
MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT! (come on everyone sing with me…."Pennies in a steam, falling leaves………) AHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Leslie Uggams Early 1960's I love it. I lived in Vermont at that time. MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT!
In an article about the role of agriculture in New York, it is stated that New York is the third
largest milk producer and the fourth largest cheese producer. The majority of those dairy
products come from the Finger Lakes region.
How cute is that cow! Wisconsin is America's Dairyland and they have plenty of cows up there. And I do love a good slice of pizza with cheese on it.
However, Northern California has plenty of cows as well.
Definitely not in the south…..I don't think the cows could stand all of the summer heat.
The South and Southwest have a lot of cattle.
Red Cloud Memorial Park — a link to the stamp clue! Thanks, reneelovesgreen!
OR….we could go with NY..Hudson/Mohawk Valley Region? Which would lead me back to Saratoga Springs area…..HMMMMMM??
Wisconsin is certainly one cow-happy state! Not only is the dairy cow the official state domestic animal and featured on the state quarter, this state produced more dairy products than any other state in the US except California, and lead the nation in cheese production. Besides the official nickname, which has nothing to do with cows, the state is also known as "The Dairy State", "America's Dairyland", and "The Cheese State"! The official state beverage is milk, and the official state microbe is "Lactoccus lactis", which is used in the production of buttermilk and cheese.
Pass the cheese curds, please!
Oops — if I could spell I would have written "Lactococcus lactis"!
Did you know that Cornell University is known as "The Cow College of the Ivy League"? You may be on to something, Deerspring!
What state is known as "The Land of Milk and Honey?" Here goes another commercial for bing!!!
When I think of "The Land of Milk and Honey," I think of Israel. There is a town near in Hamilton County, Indiana, near Carmel, Indiana named Zionville.
California!
I thought Israel was the land of milk and honey.I don't think it is a state.
Maryland
This is udderly insane, there are still many possibilities.
Hey Mary, I still believe it's in the Chessapeake Bay area, possibly Williamsburg, VA.
Hope its California!
Maybe it just means that the lot will be 5 or more acres for llivestock.
Jacques Cartier is said to be the First European to see Vermont.
Holstien Cow or black and white cow. A dairy cow.
President William Howard Taft had a pet cow named Pauline Wayne. Pauline was the official Presidential Pet from 1910 to 1913. The cow grazed the White House Lawn and provided milk to the First Family. Pauline was a black and white Holstein cow.
