I was strolling down a country lane and a lovely flower stopped me dead in my tracks. Isn’t it pretty? Can you identify it? I am hoping for 2,000 posts on this one!

  1. I have to agree it does look like a rhododendron, but it kinda resembles a Japanese
Magnolia. Not sure why I added that but poped in my heas. Still think its Virginia.

  2. All the New England states are excluded because it is too cold for the azleas to be blooming at this time. That leaves southern New York, southern Penn, and the states below Penn in the east.

  3. West Virginia sounds like a good place, and it has all the clues and I would love to try and win the Dream House there

  4. This is a red clover, which makes me think Vermont since it is its state flower. And I'm not guessing, it is a red clover someone found the exact same picture on flickr. I looked and also found it there.

    • Is it this one? NO http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a216/phalinn/su

      Okay……. here it is……… on Flickr.com http://www.flickr.com/photos/annkelliott/30812506

"I remember being surprised when I came across several stalks of Red Clover deep in the woods at Maclean Pond, off Elbow Falls Trail (Highway 66). The sun just happened to pierce the trees in this one spot : ). I guess I just didn't expect to see Red Clover growing there – don't ask me why! This member of the Pea family is an introduced plant from Europe. " http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/red-clover-000

Hey this photo was taken in Kananaski, Alberta, CANADA!

      • Yes it is the one by annkelliott. Where that exact picture was taken probably doesn't matter. My guess is that she choose that image because it is very un-red clover looking. It is that way because of the dirt spots and how much of a close up it is. The image could easily be mistaken for many other plants. The only way you could be certain what the image was would be if you found the exact image. I seriously think that she figured we'd never find out what plant it was.

  6. Wondered why so much about New York and Vermont. Now I think I figured it out.
New York was one of the 13 colonies.
Later part of New York became Vermont!! :)

    New England Colonies:

Province of New Hampshire, later New Hampshire
Province of Massachusetts Bay, later Massachusetts and Maine
Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, later Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
    Connecticut Colony, later Connecticut

    Middle Colonies

Province of New York, later New York and Vermont[1]

Province of New Jersey, later New Jersey
    Province of Pennsylvania, later Pennsylvania
Delaware Colony (before 1776, the Lower Counties on Delaware), later Delaware

    Southern Colonies

(Virginia and Maryland comprised the Chesapeake Colonies)
    Province of Maryland, later Maryland
Colony and Dominion of Virginia, later Virginia, Kentucky and West Virginia
Province of North Carolina, later North Carolina and Tennessee
Province of South Carolina, later South Carolina
    Province of Georgia, later Georgia

  7. I think it is the Japanese Magnolia

  8. I think it's a magnolia. They were everywhere when I visited Richmond, VA. Richmond is only about 1 1/2 hours from the beach, has a rich historical and political significance (note the stamps), the people are alot friendiler than the New England folks towards visitors (don't get me wrong—I LOVE New England). That's my guess so far.

  9. It's the Montana state flower, the bitter root.

Even thou the red clover isn't the state flower of New hampshire it is a very common wild flower there http://newhampshirewildflowers.com/clover-red.php http://www.mahalo.com/answers/education/what-is-t

  13. This could be a flower from a Royal Empress (or Paulownia or Princess) Tree which can be found in VT. It is also found on the Invasive Species List for VT.

  15. I believe it's an Iris (Hermodactylus). The lay person call's it a Snake's Head Iris. I get it.

    So no more guessing. ^_^

  18. Could be a rhododendron or an azalea, too… both flowers have those same spec colorations… definitely not a lily or an iris… but we need to know what month she saw the flower… azaleas and rhodendrons are all over the place… but I did find a Rattlesnake Trail, in the Blue Mountains, in Columbia County, Washington State!

I am thinking Wisconsin or Washington or Oregon… enough moisture in the last two to produce conditions good for rhods and azaleas as well as snow, WI would have the rhods… this is hard… and that number thingy clue don't know how that is supposed to figure in …. 4333… combine, add or subtract to get what??? a zip code???

Charlotte Bass Lilly on June 12, 2010 at 8:17 am
  19. I think it is a Rhododendron. OK, my guess is Pennsylvania! granite is for the Keystone state. Friendly is for "you've got a friend in PA. Snake is for "don't tread on me" from the design of the flag of a Philadelphia company of the Marines from the Revolutionary war. Snow – well thats obvious. We have tons of farms – some Amish, some not… We have mountains, I could go on, but I won't. I think it is PA!
