HGTV Dream Home 2011 Location Clue Eight

You think you’re so clever. You’ve convinced yourselves that you’ve cracked the clues and know exactly where we will build HGTV Dream Home 2011. Ready for your curve ball? Try today’s clue: a big, bad and venomous snake. Throws a monkey wrench in your big clover theory, no?
Have fun and don’t get frustrated. We’ll be announcing the location pretty soon.

I'm bouncing between Connecticut and Vermont.
I'm pretty sure this is an eastern cottonmouth. not the Florida cottonmouth, those have a more distinct stripe on each side of the head. Eastern Cottonmouth is found in the southeastern states of Alabama, western panhandle of Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Wisconsin works for me
I cannot take credit for thinking the stamp clue was for the names of US Navy ships. It was Cami who first said the stamp clue was names of battleships.
Is it me or is our snake getting bigger…..and looking right at YOU!
Here's an intersting story about the the old wooden warship, the USS Saratoga. During a naval battle in 1814, a Rhode Island red rooster's cage was destroyed by a cannonball. The rooster flew up to the top of the ship's mast and crowed loudly, rallying the sailors aboard the ship and urging them to victory. The modern aircraft carrier USS Saratoga is retired and is now docked in Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay.
It's in Connecticut.
I say maryland
Ohio? I live in Ohio, lots of snow and cold in winter! I am sticking with my original guess, HAWAII. just has to be. It would be the biggest and best Dream Home ever. Forget the clues guess from your dreams.
I am with you on that. Hawaii was and is my first choice. These clues may be leading us down the primrose path(smile)
Hmm…Wisconsin? We have timber rattlers, cows, honey….
Dang, Mary….you creeped me out with that picture of a snake! Is this National Geographic or something? It’s almost as bad as the snake hiding in my window well during our Easter egg hunt. He should have told his relative about me. It’s always nice to have a hoe or two around…for surprises of this sort.
I tried to read the comments, but it means looking at the snake picture. Guess I’ll pass on this clue. Snakes are not my friend!!!
louisiana or texas
Awesome mountains on front page. Why its our 2010 home again. HGTV please remove snakes from premisess
Okay, I am new to commenting on this but I took a look at the previous clues and to be honest, most did not make sense but there were a couple that I am starting to put together. First was the flower clue – one comment on the flower was that it was a Pinter flower which is found in Maryland and North Carolina. The second I looked at was the rice which there is a history of rice in North Carolina in its early history during. Then the rattlesnake – well, North Carolina has 37 snakes, 7 of which are venomous including three types of rattlesnake. Sooooo – my vote is North Carolina. Any help here from other clues would be great – can anyone place the other clues to North Carolina?
i could only hope that it would be North Carolina, and i won it….
Okay, so I am new at this, but I think that with the clues given, the Dream House will be in or around the Blue Ridge Parkway that spands Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The snake would be native as some of you have found out for that region. Mary also mentions syrup and pancakes, and there is a great place on the Parkway called Maybry Mill that makes the BEST buckwheat pancakes and maple syrup. As for the compass, I think you would have to have one to follow the Blue Ridge Trails.
I don't know what to make of the mountains, especially after we have also seen the coast and the desert photos. Tomorrow it will probably be a phot of the plains.
Utah is the on fraud capital states in the US—-lots of snakes there!
As long as its near a beach………… So I can imagine my morning run in the sand and listening to the waves splashing in………yes sounds good to me.
small shot big hopes .. is it eastern Oregon … we have such a diverse area here in Oregon from the coastal waters to the mountains to the deserts where these snakes slither about as they please !
I am going to have to go with Georgia.
"Have fun and don't get frustrated." I am sure there are those that are past the frustration stage. It would be more fun if Mary would let us know if it is in the East or the West. Tell us if we are getting warmer or colder. The clues are cryptic.
utah. indians descended there and there are alot of snakes. big mountains. it has to be.
At least this thread has guesses at the location, the "Tipping my Hat" thread has drifted into the realms of stupidity. But, I'm done with messing with it all, will check back again in a few days and see if the location has been announced. It has all become boring and redundant.
Good luck to those of you who have the time and inclination to continue with it.
Yep, I must agree
The location of the HGTV 2011 home is in the North Carolina Mountains.

Mary, Mary, Mary. Is there any reason that we couldn't have just a few less obscure clues? Can we at least rule out Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest? You asked if we wanted a cottage, mega mansion, etc. The results said mega mansion. Now we really have to think that if there is any validity in these polls, we will have to rule out those locations that are spendy places to build. Also, pools have won one of the votes. There is not a lot of reason to put a pool in where you only have a small summer window. The south is a better option. Thinking of things in this way gives a more practical way of deciding where the best place is. Following these clues have made my head spin till my neck is sore. Would you please, please give us more concrete hints???!!!

Atlanta, Georgia
You know, it could very well be a Massasauga Rattlesnake kinda looks like one. But i am no expert, and there is all those other clues… besides, if were all guessing and hoping… i may as well hope it is, after all they thrive in MI and what better place for a dream home…
It is Arkansas. Cartier Refers to Crater of Diamonds park. The Rattle snake is the southern tmber rattler. Arkansas is also one of the nations largest Rice producers. The Ozark Mtn are really quite nice and I think it is a fine destination.
I say near Helena, Montana, Gold and silver mines, snakes, Don't know how the numbers figure in it, but what the heck. My guess is just as good as anyone elses's.
Seems like the clues are pointing towards the South East US. Particularly Virginia. The snake, the Colonial images on the stamps, the pancakes and syrup, the rice bowl (large Asian population in Virginia), the cow, plenty of farms in VA, Cartiers (plenty of stores there too).
N vs S, Tupelo honey, dairies, oriental populations… south. Fort Smith, AR or thereabouts.
Red Cloud may be one of the most exclusive real estate areas in the Park City and Deer Valley area. Atop Flagstaff Mountain at Deer Valley Resort, Red Cloud is 30 homesites ranging from 1 to 2.5 acres.
Red Cloud homesites are some of the most distinctive residential lots in all of Park City. This gated ski-in, ski-out community situated above the Empire Pass area nestled in aspen trees offers truly unique home site opportunities.
Red Cloud residences and home sites are visible and accessible from the Quincy Express, Red Cloud, Ruby Express, Silver Strike Express, and Northside Express lifts at Deer Valley Resort. The Red Cloud area is accessible year round by car. It takes about 15 minutes to cover the 5 miles from Historic Main St in Park City through Empire Pass to Red Cloud. The road gains over 2000 feet traveling SR224 toward Guardsman Pass to Red Cloud Trail, but is well traveled and maintained.
Utah's official flag was adopted in 1913. The flag has a deep blue field with the state seal in the center, surrounded by yellow fringe. The state seal was designed by Harry Emmett Edwards in 1896. In the center of the flag is a bald eagle above a beehive (symbolizing hard work), surrounded by sego lilies (representing peace) and two US flags. The word "INDUSTRY" and the dates 1847 and 1896 appear on the flag. 1847 is the year that Brigham Young led a group of his Mormon followers to the Salt Lake Valley in Utah in order to find religious freedom and establish a new base for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The photo of the mountains is either western NC or eastern TN. However, I picked up on the clover reference in the remarks. Big Head Clover is found in the Pacific NW east of the Cascades and I have been in WA before with some of the clues (Cartier and Chopsticks). Besides WA has mountains, ocean, honey farms and is north as the compass suggests. Snakes? Yeah WA has those too. If you are looking to LaFayette (south) than you are looking in the wrong direction. It fits.
The Vermont Lake Monsters are a minor league baseball team in the Short-Season A classification New York – Penn League, affiliated with the Washington Nationals. The team plays its home games at Centennial Field on the University of Vermont campus in Burlington, Vermont. The team was located in Jamestown, New York (as the Jamestown Expos) prior to 1994, and has always been an Expos/Nationals affiliate. On August 16, 2005 the then-Expos were featured on ESPN SportsCenter as a part of the program's "50 States in 50 Days" segment on Vermont.
I don't think the timber rattlesnake picture refers to places with snakes – I don't think Mary would try to scare us that way! I think it refers to its alias name – canebrake which is either the name of a place or it can also lead me toh leads me to bamboo or possibly Japanese knotweed/Mexican bamboo.
There is a canebrake region in Alabama; Canebrake, California; Canebrake, Mississippi; Canebrake, South Carolina; Canebrake, Tennessee; and Canebrake, West Virginia.
I'm thinking Alabama, possibly the Canebrake Club in the Athens/Huntsville (Madison/Limestone county) area which Kiplinger voted no. 1 last year in terms of economic growth. And was in Forbe's top 10. And was also no 1 in RelocateAmerica's best places to live in 2010.
Once again I cange my mind on the location. My search has come acrossmaterial that states seeing a timber rattler along the Conn. River is slim to none.
I think Vermont is it.
Some of the post remind me of North Carolina. But then another look give me a hint of Maine. Maine is a gorgous place. I believe with some of the club I am leaning more to Maine.
Looks like a black-tailed rattlesnake to me. They live in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

Is that bad snake on top of a granite rock? Maybe Rocky Mountains somewhere? There is also a ….

I guess with any dream home, there are a few unknowns as to the insects or "beasties". Somehow we have all overcome them someway. Here in South Texas there are scorpions as well as snakes. We just stay far, far away if we can. I believe the home will be built somewhere close to the wonderful Blue Ridge Mountains–Perhaps in the Carolinas. I loved the Casita in the 2010 Dream Home, and the heat in the floor. I have eight grandchildren and all but two have lived with me at some time. I have two now, as well as my daughter. She is a Nurse Practitioner, and New Mexico has laws that allow a NP to practice independently. Maybe the new location will have that availability also. AB
the house in in Arkansas because that is the state of honey
