Tipping My Hat to You

No clue today, but I must say that I like your determination and persistence in tracking down the clues and the location of HGTV Dream Home 2011. Some of my favorite comments appear below. Washington? Arizona? New York? Virginia? Vermont? Who knows? Oh, wait, that’s right — I almost forgot … I do!

“Funny —I was researching Rutland County in Vermont (which is where that one species of snake is in Vermont) and when I typed in Rutland New Home Community it actually linked me right back to Virginia, not too far from the Williamsburg area. Mary isn’t the only one who has me circling between Vermont and Virginia.”
-Our Army Family

“The snake reference points to Newport, R.I. There is a Round Tower in Newport, R.I., that is said to be a mysterious tower of stones and seems to be tied up in lore about venomous snakes. It is said that anyone who had been bitten by poisonous snakes could look upon it and be saved. I’m not sure of the connection, but there are also references to the serpent knight of the round temple.”
-a fan

“I have to say I’m sure it’s in Arizona. Our state has everything to offer but the ocean. The three C’s: copper, cotton and cattle.”
-CheeckOrtiz

“New York state is home to 17 species of snakes, one of them being the timber rattlesnake. The timber rattlesnake (listed as ‘Threatened’ by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation) enjoys the widest range …”
-Ladybird

“Vermont contains one venomous snake, the Eastern timber rattlesnake, which is confined to a few acres in western Rutland County. Vermont is still my choice.”
-C&E

“There is a Snake Valley in Utah. Diamondfork, Utah: Diamond for the snake, fork for its tongue.”
-Snowrider 321

“Okay, I am sticking with Montana, just changing the town. I am going with Lower Rattlesnake, Missoula, Mont. Montana has rattlesnakes, and why not live in a neighborhood named Rattlesnake? Still don’t know the meaning of the numbers clues, but I am fixated on Montana — don’t know why!”
-RaineyinNC

“Ok, this is just my personal shot, but from the clues what we have so far looks like a Timber Rattlesnake, a dairy cow, Rice Bowl restaurant and Red Cloud on the stamp, also a Cartier. That would leave me to guess the Omaha, Neb., area.”
-AmandoC

“Just in case it’s not Vermont, let’s not forget Pennsylvania. The Poconos are a big destination for honeymoons. The state beverage is milk. The cartoon of the timber rattlesnake that was later used on Colonial flags was drawn by Benjamin Franklin in Pennsylvania. The state colors are blue and gold. There are probably other connections. Maybe I’ll look into it just for the fun of it.”

    We don't always know
    It's up or it's down
    And sunny or snow

    take the rest away.
    If that's not okay,

    Mark my words

  5. Mary, stop throwing the red herrings and speaking in forketh tongues !! I still think I have correctly deduced the new 2011 dream area as being around Council Bluffs, Iowa and if I deduced your number clues correctly they lead right to 51527 – which is ….of all places…..DEFIANCE IOWA!!! Hows that for a twist!!!

KonaSand on May 5, 2010 at 6:53 am
    • Hello Kona Sand,

what do you like the most about Defiance Iowa?

Cami on May 5, 2010 at 2:08 pm
    • Personally, I would love iowa, but both of the number clues were only 4 digits.

Our Army Family on May 5, 2010 at 8:32 pm
  6. That would be Dream Home. My bad.

the Dream Home's in Hawaii 100%

    …..I think.

    Goodnight moon over Hawaii.

  8. You know fellow guessers…maybe Mary is really playing all of us and the new 2011 dream home is actually in Australia! My bags are packed…are yours??

    • How about New Zealand? I love New Zealand!

      • How about the Island on the way there. Hawaii

Cami on May 5, 2010 at 1:56 pm
        • Cami, Hawaii has no snakes so unless Mary's venonmous snake is really a red herring, Hawaii is out. Although I would be thrilled if it were. All my family lives in Hawaii except my brother who is a Montana-ite! And he and his fiance have been scouring the area with friends looking for a connection to the dream home – with little to no luck. The last photo is the only clue they saw and that one doesn't come anywhere near Red Rock, Montana, if you include the color clues in the deciphering. So your guess is as good as mine!

KonaSand on May 5, 2010 at 9:49 pm
          • It is the absence of snakes that is so appealing.. Mary scared me clear to Hawaii.

  9. Good Morning Mary Sunshine.

Cami on May 5, 2010 at 2:43 pm
    • Good Morning Mary Sunshine
Why did you wake so soon
You frightened all the stars away
      and shined away the moon!!

I am so stuck on Montana but if I could, I would give you Hawaii

Raggedyann on May 5, 2010 at 4:00 pm
      • I watched you go to sleep last night,
        Before I stopped my play,
How did you get way over there,
And, pray, where did you stay?

I never go to sleep, dear,
I just go 'round to see
My little children of the East,
Who rise to watch for me.
I waken all the birds and bees,
        And flowers on my way,
Then last of all, the little child
Who stayed out late to play.

Cami on May 5, 2010 at 4:04 pm
        • Thank you so much for the rest of the verse………….My grandma used to sing that to me. Have an extraordinarily happy day!!

Raggedyann on May 5, 2010 at 4:32 pm
  10. If the location is Montana…….then I hope it is somewhere close to both Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. That would be ideal. I would love to look out my window and see all of the majestic mountains and natural beauty that is Montana. Please, please, please tell us the location soon.

  12. Please, Please, Mary and Jack, have mercy on us bloggers. We are all blogged out. Well at least until you reveal where our new dream home will be. Thanks for giving us this opportunity to win a home and to have the challenge to guess the home. Ok, "And the winner location is………?"

  13. Has anyone noticed we still do NOT have a definitive answer from Mary as to the exact duration of "pretty soon"? In my book it means 2 days or less… Time is up for pretty soon. I think pretty soon is over, and according to my watch right now is the exact time…

Debra Gilmour on May 5, 2010 at 5:47 pm
    • I thought the exact time was two days ago.

Cami on May 5, 2010 at 7:02 pm
    • You're right—'pretty soon' is over, now we're into 'fairly soon', then it'll be 'sometime soon', then plain old 'soon', then just 'sometime'! At that point, we'll be in "blog meltdown" mode.

      • But when it's time, its time. A great Italian chef said, No plate, shall be served before its time. He said that as he twirled is adorable mustache. I knew this guy his name was Luigi or at least that is what my dad called him.

        Janzee/Janice Vegas on May 6, 2010 at 5:03 am
    • I took pretty soon as longer than soon…and even looked up the definitions a few days ago only to confirm that…I kind of took it within the next week or so.

Our Army Family on May 5, 2010 at 8:25 pm
      • NO, please not that long!!

Debra Gilmour on May 5, 2010 at 11:20 pm
      • I didn't know there was an official definition for pretty soon. If I'd known I would a looked it up myself. I'll bet I could find a definition that suits us better though. Like- in two days.

        • I looked it up and I can't remember the distinction but it was something like (don't quote me) soon was in a short while and pretty soon was in a while or something vague like that, but it confirmed in my head (which I will admit the clues have my head spinning lately) that pretty soon was longer than soon.

  14. I've been thinking about the "non-clue" picture. Washington County , NY is the county where the
transitions from the Taconic Mountains to the Adirondacks take place and the transition from the
Hudson River Valley to the Lake Champlain River Valley. It seems all neat and tidy that all of this
is in one county. Then I found out that Taconic means "in the trees", which is the feeling the
    photo evokes.

Deerspring on May 5, 2010 at 5:51 pm
    • That is a clever conclusion. We will find out shortly, I hope.

  15. My puppy Soney wants Mary to appear soon too so we can go out and play ball. I adopted Soney from the shelter and I did not know at the time he had pnemonia. He was in and out of the hospital for his first year and the hospital said the medicine they gave him might stunt his growth. I found a miracle doctor and he saved Soney's life. He is now a 75 pound beautiful black lab and he will celebrate his second birthday May 20th. I still call him my puppy because he is making up for his lost time and wants to chew on everything. I hope you read this Mary you wouldn't let Soney down would you, playing ball is his favorite thing to do and he is practicing to be a catcher with the Seattle Mariners.

    • You must be a very sweet animal lover to see your pup through that. Glad things are better.

Cami on May 5, 2010 at 11:52 pm
      • When my son and his wife said it was time for me to get another dog after my precious Honey died from cancer I had no choice. They took me to the shelter and there was Soney the last of six puppies rescued from a field. Sometimes miracles happen.

  16. I feel like we are supposed to be doing something to bring out a clue or the location of the Dream Home. Like it's all our fault we aren't getting another clue or info.

Have we been turned into Mary's subservient minions?

Cami on May 5, 2010 at 7:16 pm
    • Minions? Hmm, in that case, I want to be a Maui Sweet Minion!

DBCoop on May 5, 2010 at 11:27 pm
      • I would never want to be edible. Maybe you were thinking of the little Menehunes of Hawaii. A Sweet Maui Menehune. Just don't get caught, you might make a nice souvenir.

    • No.just clueaholics! It seems like we got hooked on the excitement of the game. I think Mary's just giving our heads a little rest. We may have scared her when we got a little out of control, and she thought we needed a time-out.
So, relax and enjoy, who knows what will happen next. Although, all those comments about Jamie Durie may make her reconsider whar happens when we have idle time.

AnneEliseSouth on May 5, 2010 at 7:32 pm

        • Well, if you're in trouble, you're not alone, a lot if us got into that one! You know, Mary could be a nun, now that I think of it. I went to Parochial school, and was taught by the nuns, and let me tell you, some of them could be MEAN. We knicknamed one of them "The Bull", another "The Little Bull". All I can say, is don't let Mary near you with a yardstick if she is a nun! My knuckles remember the sting.

AnneEliseSouth on May 5, 2010 at 7:47 pm

  17. Thanks Sandy for the info. For most of us it means Tequila, and Tacos. The restaurants introduced the celebration on the East coast as a sales promotion and It worked, it's become another excuse to party. If one needs an excuse!

  18. In honor of Cinco de Mayo, we are having fajitas for dinner tonight. It is also our cats 5th Birthday. Wait, what's that…Mary is going to tell us where the Dream Home 2010 is? Our prayers have been answered!!

  19. Good morning Phuket, Thailand! Wait a minute…wake up Coop, you're not there yet. Yes, still here in sunny S CA, where life is good and the streets are hot and getting hotter by the day. Another day in the 90's, but my guests arriving from the Midwest today will appreciate the heat, and a dip in the pool to cool their feet.

As for MARY, I guess she's busy prepping for the big Dream Home location reveal. Why, it could happen at any moment, between now and never. Well, never on Sunday, that is.

DBCoop on May 5, 2010 at 4:11 pm

Glad you got home in time to entertain your guests. ; )

Cami on May 5, 2010 at 4:16 pm
      • Speaking of beaches, starting from north to south (on the West Coast of Phuket)—

Mai Kaew: very high end resorts, quiet beaches
Nai Yang: upscale resorts, very quiet
Nai Thon: virtually deserted beaches, very beautiful
Bang Tao: popular upscale residential area and beach resorts
        Surin: smaller beach, residential
Kamala: pricey residential and resort community, closer to "the action" spots
Kalim/Patong: much busier, mid-range resorts, Patong City is the "honky-tonk" town of Phuket
Karon: long, wide beach, small family-oriented resort/residential community
Kata Yai/Kata Noi: very popular with Europeans, mid-range resorts, plenty of restaurants
Nai Harn: Southern tip of Phuket, very quiet, fishermen's beach
Rawai: where the locals hang out, not good for swimming, but plenty of inexpensive eateries

My favorites are Mai Kaew, Nai Thon, Surin, Karon, and Nai Harn.

        • Does "very popular with Europeans" mean the same thing in Thailand as it does in the Caribbean? If so, then this is turning into a very x-rated thread! LOL! It's all Mary's fault — she's corrupted us!

          C&E on May 5, 2010 at 5:15 pm
          • Not so much in Thailand. The Thais are a modest people, and discourage the "Euro" style of bathing for women in public. However, it's not uncommon around the pools at various resorts. Actually, American tourists are very much the minority in Thailand.

Go to Patong, especially in the evenings, however, and just about anything is fair game. Completely unlike here in the HGTV blog, where patient (and impatient) bloggers await MARY's Dream Home location reveal.

We're ready and waiting, MARY, be it Blythe or Boston, Hot Springs to Jamestown, Waimea to Green Bay, or Rapid City to Austin….

Yep, I've done that tour. The James Bond Island is in Phang Nga Bay (northeast coast of Phuket) and its actual name is Ko Tapu (Ko or Koh, means Island). The 1974 movie "The Man With The Golden Gun" was filmed there. I'm sure that the stilt village you're referring to is at Ko Panyi, where tourist boats often stop for lunch. Sawasdee krup!

So many different dreams, so many different dreamers, the possibilities are endless. We'll just have to stick around to see what happens next!

I can remember seeing a band on the inside of the hat, just for a split second, engraved with some letters—probably the state where DH 2011 is sited, since knowing MARY, she's been keeping the secret under her hat. I caught a glimpse of the letters 'R', an 'N', and what looked like a 'V'—I'm not sure, and it was all so quick.

Well, any day now, the cat will be let out of the bag, and who knows, it could be a "Holstein" tabby. Just a word to the wise, MARY—be sure you're looking at the location reveal page for 2011 and not 2012 when you release that long-awaited news, otherwise, not only will we be REALLY surprised, but what will we do for clues during the lead-up to the 2012 location reveal? That would be a disastrous non-event!

We're ready for our location reveal now, MARY. Bring it on!

  22. OR…. Reston, VA

Reston was conceived as a planned community by Robert E. Simon. Founded on April 20, 1964 (Simon's 50th birthday) and named for his initials, it was the first modern, post-war planned community in America, sparking a revival of the planned community concept.[8] Simon's family had recently sold Carnegie Hall, and Simon used the funds to create Reston. Simon hired Conklin Rossant Architects as master planners to incorporate higher density housing to conserve open space, as well as mixed use areas for industry, business, recreation, education, and housing.

A huge one story house with lots of bedrooms to accommodate my family and friends who will visit. A beautiful pool. A loyal staff that would include a gardener, a cook, a house keeper and a chauffeur who would pick up guests at the airport and drive us into town to see theater and/or the jazz clubs I would make sure that this staff had health care and paid vacations.

transitions from the Taconic Mountains to the Adirondacks take place and the transition from the
Hudson River Valley to the Lake Champlain River Valley. It seems all neat and tidy that all of this

  37. Hello folks, For those of you celebrating Cinco de Mayo, Holla!! As a child we were taught that Cinco de Mayo was Mexico's Independance Day in school. However, As a teacher myself, when I researched this date I found that what I believed in was false. It is really the cslebration of winning a fairly small war or skirmish and I don't remember the name of the area (been away too long). Even today, Southern CA.
celebrates. On the News this morning every Personality was wishing everyone a Happy Cinco de Mayo. I'll bet they didn't know what it is about!!!

SandyLA on May 5, 2010 at 6:55 pm
    • I remember it well….

Actually, I know the area from visits years ago—Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory by the Mexican forces over French troops at the Battle of Puebla on 5/5/1862.

Puebla is a large city (and district) about 70 miles south/southeast of Mexico City. It's not usually on the tourist path, but is an attractive city, with much of its colonial heritage and buildings intact. Outside of the city, in the small town of Cholula, is an amazing pyramid, covered up with a church built upon the top by the Spanish. Well worth a visit.

What if it is a Roanoke, VA…

Old Mill Plantation is Southwest Roanoke County's newest planned community. Just 5 miles south of Route 419 on Bent Mountain Road (Route 221), this community is convenient to all that Roanoke has to offer. Come out and admire the incredible views from the minimum one-acre lots.

You will immediately fall in love with the scenic views, the wide streets, the incredible homes, and the wonderful amenities area with a 4,500 square foot swimming pool complete with beach entry and fountain, gas grill for entertaining, and views not seen from ANY community pool. The community clubhouse boasts nearly 2,000 sq ft of an entertaining area including recreation room with flat screen TV and DVD player, separate fitness area with cardio equipment and free weights, and a kitchenette and dining area. This clubhouse is perfect for your bridal or baby shower, small group meetings, or simply to gather on a Sunday to watch sports or a movie!!

I am ok with VA being where the dream home will be located but I still believe it is on the Big Island in HI. Mary didn't mention any of us who guessed HI so I take it from you who have done this before, that may be a clue in itself. This is my first year trying to guess and following the blog. I have to say, it has been fun but like many others, I would like to know now. Everyone click your heels together and ask Mary to tell us where our dream home will be. I know it is somewhere over the rainbow where skies are blue but that is about all I know for sure. It was poitning in the North-Northwest section, so I don't think it will east of the Mississippi despite Mary's comment that the compass was a non-clue clue.
