  1. How about granite (the countertops), one of the official state rocks of Vermont?

    C&E on May 6, 2010 at 3:16 pm
    • P.S. Mary, you've got to stop using the Wikipedia Vermont page! Yes, this info is there too! LOL!

      C&E on May 6, 2010 at 3:21 pm
      • You… rock.. I was researching the same thing, then posted it only, to see that you had it posted first…. You are speedy…

reneelovesgreen on May 6, 2010 at 4:16 pm
    • I totally agree, Vermont is known for granite also its states beverage is milk. Many of the clues given so far fit Vermont.

    • Granite State – New Hampshire

fjmcwade on May 9, 2010 at 1:46 pm
    • that's what I thought!

Mary on May 15, 2010 at 2:03 pm
    • While we in Vermont would be very proud to have an HGTV Home here (particularly on Lake Champlain), I would guess that the granite state of New Hamshire will want to lay claim to this honor since they officially call themselves the "Granite State" and it does snow there and they too have a certain reptile

Elizabeth on May 20, 2010 at 1:40 pm
    • Granite is nice but what about Soapstone. It is none porous, doesn't need protective treatment. It will scratch, but won't stain.

      Marian O'Donley on May 29, 2010 at 5:03 pm
  2. What all is connected in a kitchen???? C&E's granite? Plumbing? Gas? Humm…time to go crazy again!

    boomer1957 on May 6, 2010 at 3:23 pm
  3. Granite was first mined in Vermont in the late 1700s. Starting around the early 1800s, demand for granite began to increase. Robert Parker, a veteran of Bunker Hill and the War of 1812, is given credit for beginning commercial production of high-grade granite. As this demand grew, and granite began to be used for monuments and memorials, immigrants from Europe’s stone centers, particularly Italy, Scotland, England, Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, Spain, and Germany, were drawn to Vermont. During this time, Barre, Vermont, home to a number of granite quarries and mills, became known as the “granite capital of the world.” In 1900, at least sixty granite companies were operational throughout the state.

  4. Yes, Huntsville Granite and Marble:http://www.huntsvillegm.com/

I'm still going with Huntsville, Alabama.

    Theresa S. on May 6, 2010 at 3:28 pm
    • Puleeez not Huntsville,Alabama. That would be the ONLY dream home for MILES around. At least the last time I went through there!!! NO offense intended.

JWmson on May 6, 2010 at 9:41 pm
    • I am missing the connection between the clues and Huntsville.

  5. GRANITE. Iam thinking Vermont. Still hanging on to S. Dakota also! This has been so CHALLENGING!! Beverly :-P

Beverly J. Strickland on May 6, 2010 at 10:32 am
  6. Well, I'm behind the curve in this one…going to have to forbid guests visiting when potential clues are still in the offering! However, the granite is obvious, which as has been pointed out by hundreds of bloggers here already, is the state rock, along with marble and slate, of Vermont.

DBCoop on May 6, 2010 at 3:33 pm
    • You are funny!! I am sure that your guests will understand if you need to step away for a moment (though, we all know it turns into hours)… Maybe, Show Me can help out!

reneelovesgreen on May 6, 2010 at 4:18 pm
      • Or give your guests some of the $20 to make origami…hehe..

reneelovesgreen on May 6, 2010 at 4:19 pm
    • Coop, go enjoy your guests — after all, they opted to leave the balmy Midwest for that atrocious weather in California just to visit you! LOL!

      C&E on May 6, 2010 at 10:59 pm
    • You certainly can't plan guests around Mary and Jack's schedule.

  9. I actually read these blogs. I'm begining to think that I am the only one to see a certain clue that no one else has blogged about. The photograph that says DON'T GIVE UP,look at the little girl in the coat. To our left of her head there is an obvious clue. There are purposely formed letters. Can anyone but me see it?

curious on May 6, 2010 at 4:13 pm
    • I have always state here that I think the girl has a seahorse in her hair on the left side. Which I think could lead to either Puerto Rico or Hawaii. Hey, what about Elvis song and movie, "Blue Hawaii"?

      1LMichele on May 6, 2010 at 6:04 pm
    • are you talking about R..N…V….?

reneelovesgreen on May 6, 2010 at 4:32 pm
      • I personally see a S and F. The F could also be a T. As for the V I've wondered if the zipped down coat, which forms a V is part of the clue or if it was zipped down to open up the hood to make room for the lettered clues. S F- San Francisco, S T V- St. Thomas Virgin Islands. My husband saw an M in the clue,Montana,Marthas Vineyard,Mount Vernon. Never the less, I am convinced there is a clue spelled out on this little girl. Good Luck!!

  10. I KNOW, I KNOW, I KNOW the connection! I can see clearly now—the kitchen's "island" workspace! It's going to be in the Islands—HAWAII. Cami is going to be doing cartwheels over this one! Aloha—can you hear me now?!!!!

DBCoop on May 6, 2010 at 4:20 pm
    • I am doing cartwheels too! I believe now more than ever it is the BIG ISLAND HI. It just has to be because Cami and I have never given up!

  16. Seems to me that what fits best is Cow Island, New Hampshire. The Gramite State where they have timber snakes. It would be a beautiful place for a Dream Home, though a little cold some of the year.

    5. Cow – Vermont's primary agricultural income is Dairy Farms
    6. Flower – looks like the Red Clover – Vermont's state flower
    7. Snake – looks like the Timber Rattlesnake found in Rutland Co. Vermont
    8. Granite – Barre, Vermont is known as Granite Capital

  19. I'm not sure where it is. If this HGTV 2011 Home is ANYTHING like the others I am Sure Not ONLY Will it be ABSOLUTELY Beautiful but the LOCATION will be Pleasent as well, like all the rest! :) Hydranges are one of my Favorite Flowers! When my Family lived/rented with my Father in Santa Rosa, Ca. They Grew on the N.W. side of our House! Every Spring from age 10 yrs on up we all would pick these Big Blueish/Purple Bunches of Flowers! They filled the house with color/love! Where we live now we have a small one out front, but because of the deer here, we have to keep a fence around it. No flowers yet ,still hoping though! :)

  26. Thank you Mary. We are getting excited again. I wonder if you sneak in clues in these blog messages. This is the first year that I have ever participated in these blogs. I have had fun with the clues. I know the dream home will be the best ever especially when you tell us that it is on the Big Island. This is fun! I imagine even Elvis the snake is laughing. We know that you know where it is and we can't wait to find out. When I saw the kitchen with the big island, I was stunned because my reasoning on the clues has been far out there but the big island in the kitchen convinced me that I am right.

noidealeft on May 6, 2010 at 6:47 pm
  27. New Hampshire is the granite state- , but the flower picture did not look like a lilac to me. Granite is also the state rock for North Carolina and VT, but I think the color scheme goes more with New Hampshire's flag. the flower picture looked nothing like a dogwood either, but maybe the clue meant something else? I'm sticking with Vermont simply because that's where I want it to be :) , but NH would be good too!

  28. I agree……when does the madness end!!!!!! With no answer in sight, the only thing left to do is keep guessing. I have some ideas about this photo, but need to do the research before I open my mouth up to anyone.

Summer on May 6, 2010 at 7:20 pm
  29. When do we get to drive Mary mad? Is it even possible?

    boomer1957 on May 6, 2010 at 7:25 pm
  30. I went back through all of the Dream Homes past on a tour of kitchens. I ruled out all but 2 homes that could possibly be linked to todays photo. In 2001, Camden, ME was the location for the Dream Home. I believe that this photo was taken inside of the 2001 Dream Home kitchen. There are no photos of the interior spaces for the home in Maine posted on the Dream Home site. Mary is being tricky with this one.
The other possibility is Nehalem, OR. But I do not think that Oregon is going to be the location for 2011. I like the state of Maine! And I could not be happier!!!!!! I only hope that I am right. Maine would be perfect.

Summer on May 6, 2010 at 7:53 pm
    • Good thinking about looking at past DH kitchens. I will go look at the two you found now. Main is a blue state also and was only mentioned 2 x so far on my clue one blog search. Oregon also is a blue state and was only mentioned once so far on my clue one blog search. So maybe one of these????? If so, just need to match all the other clues to them to see if they can fit.

      1LMichele on May 6, 2010 at 10:12 pm
  31. So far the other states I haven't mentioned relating to blog 1, but remember I still need to finish my findings, they are" the states with 2 mentions so far are Virginia, TN, Tx?, New Jersey, and Georgia. The rest I found with only 1 mention so far are: Maryland, Main x 2, Iowa, NY State, Arkansas, Wyoming, W. Virginia, Washington State, N.Mexico, LA, Oregon, Colorado, and PA. So I will keep checking and let you know the end results.

reneelovesgreen on May 6, 2010 at 4:15 pm
      • This one was mostly a lucky guess. I vaguely remembered seeing this photo before (I recalled that I didn't care for the roman shade in the window!) and was pretty sure I had seen it on the main HGTV website. So I went to the kitchen photo gallery, assumed the style was traditional and color was blue (the two search categories listed) and it was the first photo to come up! Do you think maybe I spend way too much time with HGTV? LOL!

  36. Marble, granite, and slate were designated as the official state rocks of Vermont in 1991. Vermont has a complex geology with rich and diverse mineral resources. All three of Vermont's state rocks were equally important to the minerals industry that began in the state over 200 years ago.

Marble is found generally in southwestern Vermont (Danby's marble quarry is the largest underground quarry in the world). Vermont marble ranges in color from pure white to black and was used in the National Art Gallery, Radio City Music Hall, the Jefferson Memorial, and Vermont's State Capitol.

reneelovesgreen on May 6, 2010 at 3:25 pm
    • Was Vermont marble used to build the Cartier building and is the snake curled up on a slab of granite?

CAR on May 6, 2010 at 11:31 pm
      • I am not sure, CAR….. what did you find??? Curious…

reneelovesgreen on May 10, 2010 at 2:26 am
    • I thought about marble, but some designer on an HGTV show I watched said marble stained easily. Not the best countertop idea.

tnbev on May 6, 2010 at 11:23 pm
      • Yep….. it is granite… I was just sharing the other natural resources of Vermont!! Marble is not the best countertop idea.. You are so correct….. Though, I love marble…. and would reuse it anytime!

  39. Nothing more relaxing than a southern kitchen with the sweet smell of a lemon Bundt cake drizzeled with sugar. Thanks Mary for the fun- past present, and future. Yesterday, I changed my mind about upstate NY when I looked back at the clues.I will go along with the first blogger cafeers about the granite mountain.
Stone Mountain is not immediately visible upon entering the park that bears its name, but this magnificent 600-foot granite dome is well worth the wait. Sunlight and shadows dance across a broad tapestry of stone. White-tailed deer emerge from the security of the forest to graze on meadow grasses at the mountain's base. The scenery is only one attraction of the, and for those of us who fish there are 20 miles of designated trout waters. Or, with more than 16 miles of trails, take a hike in the park. Designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1975, Stone Mountain is bounded on the north by the Blue Ridge Parkway and on the west by the Thurmond Chatham Game Lands. More than 14,100 acres of mountain beauty offer opportunities for outdoor activities of all kinds.

  40. I believe it is Monktown, Vermont. or Rhode Island. I re read all the clues and certain sayings were given such as calculating the captions. Everytime I look at the clues I come up with either place.

curiousdee on May 6, 2010 at 8:29 pm
  41. But, what would the snake in the earlier clues have to do with Vermont? Especially since it appeared to be a Timber Rattler

    gone2dadogs on May 6, 2010 at 3:31 pm
    • You need to read the comments under the rattlesnake thread — there are timber rattlers in Vermont (their only venomous snake and very rare).

      C&E on May 6, 2010 at 3:39 pm
    • Not postive, but …….The Timber Rattlesnake has been designated a Species of Greatest Conservation Need (high priority) in Vermont’s Wildlife Action Plan and is endangered in Vermont.

reneelovesgreen on May 6, 2010 at 4:29 pm
    • Vermont has the Timber rattlesnake. The state also has a timber rattlesnake removal service so if you have the snake they take it to a safe habitat and the service is free.

tnbev on May 6, 2010 at 11:29 pm
    • I agree with you gon2dadogs. The Timber Rattler is native only to North Carolina.

  44. The countertops are granite in this photo…………so, I guess that it is possible that the Dream Home for 2011 is going to be built in New Hampshire. New Hampshire is known as the Granite State.
OHHHH…….how could I miss this, I know the answer! In the state of Montana, there is a county that lies directly in between Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park. The name of this county is Granite! The home is going to be built in the state of Montana, in Granite County. What a beautiful location it will be!!!

  45. Who knew my visit to the Rock of Ages Quarry in Barre, Vermont would come in handy so soon! For as the folks at the quarry advertise, Vermont is the granite capital of the world.

    • Also, the Rock of Ages quarry is the largest granite quarry in America!

    • Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there aren't any snakes in Hawaii. Although, there are cows, flowers, and plenty of Asian food. :o )

      • Actually there are a few brown snakes from Guam they are trying to catch and kill. You are right they try to be snake free.

    • Sarah I think you're right, It's Hawaii!! Gold Coast (shiny) off Big Island, "Meadow Gold" brand from Hawaii, Some call Big Island Orchid Isle because of over 100,000 orchid varieties, until recently one of the largest dairy cow ranches in the USA with black and white cows in beautiful green pastures and no snakes allowed in Hawaii. Just haven't figured out the chopstick & bowls and wrong way sign

  47. Or no, wait—could it be kitchens? What state is known for their kitchens. Is there a state with an official room? Ketchikan, Alaska?

DBCoop on May 6, 2010 at 3:41 pm
    • The common kitchen color thread is blue, BLUE is the field of color in Vermont's state flag. That might be even more significant than the granite connection—but either one points to VERMONT.
