HGTV Dream Home 2010 Winner Weekend

Hi all,

I thought we’d take a break from the clues (yes, the snowflake photo is annoying me now, too), to take a look at photos of winner weekend, a celebration held in honor of Myra Lewis. She received the keys to her brand new home and vehicle. Click through. I think you will enjoy the sunset pic!

  1. Tom and Georgi Dockery began Vivian Acres one year ago as a tribute to their daughter Vivian who lost her battle with cancer two years ago, at the age of 16.

Vivian loved animals and spent many hours with her dad imagining their goat farm. The angora goats are named after rock stars that Vivian loved such as the members of Green Day, Billie Joe, Mike and Tre. Gwen Stefani the Goat will be having babies any day now.

Tom and Georgi plan to add bees, worms and chickens to their menagerie and will be selling their yarn at the Colchester Farmers' Market this summer.

  2. FUN….

Vermont artist Abby Manock celebrated her May birthday with a Running of the Bulls down Church St. Spectators participated by dashing in front of the bulls who were making good time despite the high winds that threatened their paper bag bull masks.

Maybe we need to do the same to get MARY's undivided attention…. Everyone put on your masks today and comment in disguise……

  3. I love all of the History in Vermont:

To celebrate the opening weekend of the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum, visitors took a trip back in time to the 1700s. Captain Morrill's Company of New Hampshire gave guests a taste of everyday life at a military camp during the American Revolution. (in Burlington)

  6. Back in 1973, Bill Bartels was thumbing through the New York Times when he saw an ad for a private island for sale in Vermont.

He phoned the listing agent and learned the property was on Garden Island, a Lake Champlain hideaway off the coast of Charlotte believed to have been the summer retreat of President William Howard Taft. The compound had a “main house” with exquisite woodwork and original 1800s fireplaces, along with five cottages — all with electricity, water and septic — set on 30 acres nestled around a protected waterfront.

Bartels and two business partners — brothers Robert and James Brown — hopped a plane from New York to Burlington the next day to investigate the rare find.

“We had a rowboat and a little five-horsepower motor, and we plowed across in early March — there were some broken ice floes still there,” Bartels recalls. “We got on the island and found there was just a very amazing place. Everything was boarded up and dusty and musty, but we all recognized the true magic of the place.”

Bartels and the Browns, then young men in their thirties, loved the property. They spent two years putting the financing together, then bought it for $150,000.

Now, 35 years later, with their children grown, the owners have put the island retreat on the market at a price as big as the bathtub once used by President Taft: $7.9 million. The estate’s $19,652 yearly property tax bill is just as eye-popping. (The retreat takes up most, but not all, of the island, which also has three small, independently owned properties.)

  9. Gail clarified the question that started here…was left unanswered…and then appeared over there on the Green Home blog. When mailing in postcards, you do NOT need to put them in an envelope.

  15. Morning All, Is this not like Deja Vu all over again? It seems to me like we've become a little subdued, maybe a bit burned out.

Reminds me of when you crate train a dog. At first the dog fusses and whines, then eventually he just gives in, and accepts his fate, some dogs even learn to love the crate, because it gives them a sense of security.

Well, It looks like fussing, and whining didn't work, and although I feel somewhat subdued, or burned out, I'm not going to like being in the crate, and will never learn to love it!

What I plan to do is just wait the master out, conserve my energy for the chase, she's got to open the door eventually, and when she does, sweet freedom is going to be all the more sweeter!

Mary, open the crate door, let us old dogs out we're ready for the chase, even being confined to a crate can't break our spirit. We've got a nose for clues, a thirst for information give an old dog a break!

( My apologies to anyone who may be offended by my dog analogy, no actual dogs were used or hurt in this analogy)

  23. The ties to granite and the rattlesnake are referring to John Swenson and the Swenson Granite Co. Although the quarry was on Rattlesnake Hill in NH, John provided the granite for the Brooklyn Bridge, as well as many other famous NYC landmarks. He maintained his sales office on 5th Ave.

Now, look again at the stamps. I previously told of Hamilton's and Washington's ties to NY. Siouz Chief Red Cloud was born in NB and secured native rights in Wyoming and Montana, but he, along with 20 other delegates visited NYC at Pres. Grant's request, where New Yorkers were capitvated and completely impressed by the chief.

When you connect the dots, the only answer is NY.
