Building a Mountain Lodge

Hi folks,

Sorry that it’s been awhile since I’ve posted. Things are moving fast at the HGTV Dream Home 2011 construction site. I’ve already chatted with the builder and the architect about this home. I think it’s safe to say that this lodge will be the most outstanding Dream Home to date. Think treehouse. Think amazing views of the mountainside. Think generations of family members gathered around the dining table for Thanksgiving dinner. It’s going to be that kind of home.

I’ve included an amazing photo of the mountains, snapped near the home site, and a shot of our construction crew at work. Also, make sure you check out time-lapse pics of the construction site – new photos were added yesterday.

Cheers!

2. Hi everybloggie,

Wow ! This is marvelous !!! What a great 15th Anniversary this Dream Home will be :O)

GoldieLocksBear on July 1, 2010 at 6:56 pm
• Going to have many "WOW" factors!!

RJMstone on July 1, 2010 at 7:27 pm
• I have only been watching for a few years. Have they been giving away homes for 15 years? I had no idea.

Nancy9979 on July 5, 2010 at 7:02 pm
• Hi Nancy,
Yes indeed, in 2011 HGTV will have been building and giving away Dream Homes for fifteen years ! The first one was a log home, ( with the kit imported ,I believe, from Sweden). Then Jack came on board and has made the homes more stunning each year ! I am amazed that each one is different in location and design and Linda is so talented to ring the changes with interior design, no two kitchens are ever the same, and she really takes the location, the architectural plans, landscape features, etc., into consideration before designing the color palette and furnishings. I would adore a home planned by Jack and Linda ~ all I'd need would literally be a toothbrush and my favorite perfume :O) The Dream Homes are all " Move-in-and-Enjoy-Ready " !! The WOW Factor is incredible !

3. This was perfect timing. : ) Thank you for the new blog. I am very happy to hear the word lodge associated with the Dream Home. It sounds and looks like a beautiful area to build the Dream Home.

Cami on July 1, 2010 at 2:02 pm
• Thanks for the head's up! And yes- I am liking that word lodge too…anxious to see more.

5. Thanks Mary for the new blog…I'm somewhat laughing as lately each of the blogs are posted after we are all talked out on the topic…we've done most of the talking there is to do on the pics that were posted yesterday.

I did pick up on the key words "lodge" and "treehouse"…and am trying to get my own pictures in my head. Can't wait to see more…ooh and maybe a new color scheme on the site…just a thought ;)

Our Army Family on July 1, 2010 at 7:14 pm
• Our Army Family: I am wondering what new color scheme did you have in mind? What color scheme would you like for a lodge? I had already guessed that the home would be tri-level. Treehouse and generations of family member gathered around the dining table make me very hopeful that this fabulous home will contain an elevator.
P.S. Hope you and the girls enjoy your Disney vacation. You so much deserve it.

Katydiddle on July 2, 2010 at 12:29 am
• Thanks- Disney isn't until later in the fall…this is a road trip to a family reunion that we are getting ready to escape.

My thoughts are purples and icey blues for mountains and possibly greens for forest- maybe a darker green or teal to match better and of course frost whites or silvers.

Our Army Family on July 2, 2010 at 2:14 am
6. So, I am wondering or guessing this this extra view is a view that you see from the home? maybe?

Our Army Family on July 1, 2010 at 7:15 pm
• The mountain view, according to Mary, is a view of the mountains "NEAR" the home site, so hard to tell if we'll actually see this from inside the home, although from the construction slides the ski slope does show in several of them.

MeKhazSimi on July 1, 2010 at 9:04 pm
• Just thought I would say hello, in case you have been able to get on in your travels. We have all been missing you. Cheers kid, Love Janzee

Janzee on July 8, 2010 at 4:53 am
7. This is a different view than what the HGTV.Pro time lapse photos show. In those I see that "X" shaped skiing run. http://www.hgtvpro.com/hpro/photo_template/articl

Could this new view be seen from behind some of those trees?

RJMstone on July 1, 2010 at 7:25 pm
• I was wondering the same thing. Do you know the answer?

Nancy9979 on July 5, 2010 at 4:40 am
• HiRJMstone have you checked out the recent slides. I cant tell but it looks like part of the house is carved into the hill, and to me it looks like what we are seeing is the backside of the house. It almost looks like a NJ split level I had where an upper deck led to the actual house. It's evolving into something very untraditional from my vantage point.

Janzee on July 7, 2010 at 11:56 pm
• True! It looks to me like they are taking the garage photo straight on at ground level. Whereas the time lapse photos appear to be from a camera further up the hill with a wider angle.

EdinOregon on July 8, 2010 at 7:14 am
8. I can see why the Von Trapps thought of their Austrian homeland when they came to Stowe Vermont. I think I'm hearing music again.

I ordered the movie The Sound of Music, and since receiving it, I haven't felt like watching it. Just seeing the mountains has given me that spark of excitement again.

I think I'll go look on Netflix again and see what other movies they might have on Vermont.

Cami on July 1, 2010 at 7:27 pm
• Cami: You love music so much I don't understand your hesitation to watch The Sound of Music again. I've seen it live on stage more times than I have watched the movie. Every Maria is so adorable. The Von Trapp's story is so inspirational and that mountain view should spark all of us with excitement.
Sometimes I just hum to myself, Moonlight in Vermont. Oh shucks, then I get excited again thinking about the hills that are alive.

Katydiddle on July 2, 2010 at 12:51 am
• LOL. Katy. Lately when I sing the hills are alive, I start thinking about that darn snake again.
: – o

Cami on July 1, 2010 at 8:06 pm
• Speaking of that darn snake Cami, the lady that wears that huge snake ring keeps wearing it every time we have a mosaic class. I know she is wearing it to irritate me! I screamed when she wore it the first time and I screamed again today. When I start talking about the DH she just rolls her eyes. So I blurted out "guess where they are building the DH?" So I fibbed "in Hawaii!" Everyone looked so puzzled except the snake lady who was trying to ignore me. They all said "we were so sure it was Stowe, VT!"

alicesoneysmom on July 2, 2010 at 1:30 am
• Be very careful. She might get a few snake arm bands to get back at you now! And sit right next to you! You know how vengeful women can be! ^_^

EdinOregon on July 3, 2010 at 6:45 am
• I was going to say, what kind of a woman wears a snake ring? Does she just like reptiles? Or is she the kind that likes pieces of reptiles, like snake venom and eye of newt.

So that brings up my next question. Does she always wear black? Does she look a little green around the edges? Does she tend to cackle when she laughs?

Cami on July 3, 2010 at 7:17 am
• Cami: I am so sorry, I must have missed that snake story. Please tell me about it and why it frightened you do much.

Katydiddle on July 2, 2010 at 10:22 pm
• Did you miss the snake clue katy? Look up clues for 2011, there is a big ol' nasty timber rattle snake. I am guessing he lives at the base of them thar hills by Lake Champlain, but still makes me think the hills are alive with snakes.

Cami on July 3, 2010 at 4:57 am
• Cami: Oh, is that all. i was thinking you had a real life encounter with a rattler. But in order to understand your fear of snakes, I just have to imagine if that clue had been a spider. OK, I'll play along and sing "the hills are alive with creepy spiders". Ugh, shudder.
Let's get real. I'm sure all that construction of the DH has driven any snakes far away. I've heard they are very shy. Wish I could say the same for spiders. Well, let's leave the snakes for the plumbers and the spiders for the cooks. Love ya.

9. Just went and looked back over the builder's website…most of their homes seem to have nice big windows and rooflines that seem to be multilayered with peaks.

faykaygay on July 1, 2010 at 8:44 pm
10. The site looks beautiful, as if I or anyone would say the location is awful and depressing. Okay so maybe there is someone who hates mountains, trees ,and all 4 seasons. Go figure.

tnbev on July 1, 2010 at 8:03 pm
• there are a lot of people who aren't used to 6 months + of snow. I drive about 15 miles to work & see prairie dogs with mounds along side businesses – not far from the John Deere/Yellow house machinery business & some tire store. If you have your windows down you can hear the bark at each other. So beauty is everywhere – you just got to look at all the little things God has given us.

joplays on July 1, 2010 at 10:07 pm
11. Well Mary… There was a spark of excitement and now it's gone again. I guess I'll have to get another spark from the 4th of July firework displays in our area. Maybe after the Holiday, Monday July 5th, you will have the floorplans ready for us.

I wonder how long that spark of excitement will last.

Cami on July 1, 2010 at 3:03 pm
• Dear Cami, Cami, Cami, What happen to your Energizer Bunny Spark that last forever and ever? You do not sound like your normal happy self. Are you OK? I like your new picture by the way, even though I do not know what is is. LOL

1LMichele on July 5, 2010 at 10:18 pm
12. The words lodge, and treehouse ignite the imagination. To me treehouse, says panoramic views, and nature out every window. Eagle nest views of mountains. Cozy, and fun enough to bring out the inner child. Steps leading to a loft area somewhere, maybe above the garage.

Lodge says ample use of natural elements, wood and stone, cathedral ceilings, exposed beams, open airy living areas. I picture a pair of antique skis mounted above a huge stone Fireplace in an X pattern.

Well that's my imagination trip for today. I'm sure we all have different dream lodges. Now, this is starting to be fun! :) B)

• Thank you Anne, I liked your vision. It almost sounded like a castle fairytale.

Cami on July 1, 2010 at 8:23 pm
• Dear Anne, Your descriptione. makes me want to snuggle up by the fire, sip hot chocolate, and let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

I love timber and stone homes, especially if they have an open lodge feel to them inside, which I hope this one will have. I'm guessing there is a loft over the garage facing out across the mountains as the other side looks to be cut off by the next section's roof line. Bet we get floor plans and lots of info after the 4th of July week-end.

MeKhazSimi on July 1, 2010 at 9:14 pm
• Hi AnneElise,

Skis, yes! in an X …nooooo, that means Danger! Accident !!

Let's go for parallel skis over the mantel :O) lol

GoldieLocksBear on July 1, 2010 at 11:50 pm
• So beautifull expressed AnneEliseSouth. You brought me into the scene, and I am just staring out of the windows, watching eagles flying overhead.

Janzee on July 2, 2010 at 1:31 am
• Actualy Janzee ther aren't too many eagles in New England, but there are a lot of Red Tailed Hawks, equally as beautiful.

AnneEliseSouth on July 2, 2010 at 3:23 pm
• Correct- they are on the endangered species list, but since 2005 a nesting pair has been spotted in Waterford, and the population is expected to grow, we hope, and pray. Just up the road in Waterford check at the Rabbit Hill Inn which is a bed and breakfast.
Bird, Moose & Wildlife Watching (watch video)
This is truly a birders paradise! You'll see bald eagles, hawks, peregrine falcons, osprey, loon, blue heron, variety of owls, woodpeckers and hundreds of others. The big guys are out there too – such as moose, black bear, white-tail deer and much more. Easy drives will take you to through the Northern Connecticut River Watershed, White Mountains National Forest, the Northeast Kingdom's famous "Moose Alley", and several wildlife sanctuaries. Here are just a few of our local hot spots:

• Anne, you must be a writer , It couldn't have been expressed better. You gave our mind panoramic views without a camera, LOL I can see very high airy ceilings too, and Views so Beautiful from every window that makes your body feel like you are floating through the mountains,… Oh! , Oh got a little dizzy there for a moment .lol… Just kidding with you , but , Isn't it wonderful how such beauty can take your breath away and wash away any stresses of the day , and has a way of making you feel everything is going to be alright , and then , gives you back a Mountain of strength to appreciate this wonderful life what ever it may deal us , and be ready for another Day. *AliB

• Anne: I love your description of a lodge, but I think HGTV has done two of them before. Sure, you could use skies to frame a mirror. Knowing Linda's work I think she may have something up her sleeve. Remember how she amazed us with her NM decor? Natural elements are great and nobody can change that mountain view.
We would love floor plans soon, Mary.

Katydiddle on July 2, 2010 at 11:01 pm
13. Look, I'm already talking to myself.
The thought occurs that the view Mary gave us on this blog is the view behind the time-lapse camera. Maybe the Home is located on the mountainside, and she is showing us the mountaintop view of the DH mountain behind the home. How beautiful, and cool would that be! Views front and back, that would afford the treehouse efftect.

AnneEliseSouth on July 1, 2010 at 8:25 pm
• I think you might be on the right track….

faykaygay on July 1, 2010 at 8:53 pm
• It is definitely nestled in the trees. I hadn't considered that it was the backwards, (actually front of house) view, but you are likely correct, since the front view (or back view) is likely ski slopes.

It would be nice to have a wide view of the ski slopes as well, so whenever someone wipes out, I can say, "yep I've done that before" "I do hope they're ok". Then I will wait to see if they and their bowling pins spring back up, or if a rescue is to take place. Maybe that would be too much drama for me to watch…Never mind.

Cami on July 1, 2010 at 8:58 pm

Is that a paid trip including the tour?

definitely interesting. I am especially looking forward to seeing how the windows of the DH

be extra special!!

I'm going to buy a Husky, a snowmobile, the warmest, biggest, sweaters and boots, a big bottle of Pinot Noir, and then I am going to wait…., and wait, and wait…and Jamie will come to my door in Kansas City to let me know I now own (after taxes) a lodge that rides the treetops overlooking a beautiful mountain and a little village that has every thing a person could ever dream about. Well….since we're dreaming, just thought I'd put that out there.

charmayne3c on July 1, 2010 at 9:07 pm
• i'd love to have a Chow Chow again. Rode mine like a horse when I was 3. When Chow first wandered up to our home to become a member – I thought there was a bear at the door. It was like she came home to us. the people that came to claim her saw how she & I got along & she had been killing their chickens. I heard mom & dad talking later they had tied her up & beat her. I prayed & prayed & they let us keep her. Texas is not good climate for a chow. The only time she growled is when we tried to cut her hair. ironic…..

1naturelover2 on July 9, 2010 at 11:47 pm
• Your dream sounds logical to me, but wouldn't you want to wait on the Husky until Jamie shows up at your door? The other things store well, but the Husky might require a bit more maintenance while you're still there in Kansas City. Of course, the Pinot Noir is very sensible…win or lose, it will come in handy at some point!

26. Reading between "Mean Mary's" devious lines, I am sure the mountain picture is not visible from the Dream Home. When she says "near", it could be 50 miles away. It's too bad she didn't tell us they updated the time lapse pictures yesterday. Then she might have been ahead of the blogger who already informed us. I am still waiting for the floorplan! ^_^

EdinOregon on July 1, 2010 at 9:15 pm
• yep- that's kind of what my first post said…all talked out on those. I don't suppose she will listen to our pleas and give us something new and juicy for the weekend.

Our Army Family on July 1, 2010 at 9:28 pm
• You know what that pic of the tip top of the mountain reminds me of, minus the snow of course??

It reminds me of a movie about a cranky but cute and hairy green guy. The cranky cute, hairy green guy turned nice in the end, especially to Mary Loo Who.

Hmmm, I wonder if there is a cave up there that has a link to Stowes Whoville Garbage dump?

Cami on July 1, 2010 at 9:38 pm
• Nope wrong mountain Cami! Nobody here will turn nice to "Mean Mary"! ^_^ I wouldn't want to confuse her anyway! ^_^

EdinOregon on July 1, 2010 at 10:37 pm

• Well, Ed, look on the bright side—-with "333 inches" of snow on the mountains—–standing on the roof with a snow shovel——we'll probably be able to see this mountain view regardless of which direction from the site it was taken. ha

MeKhazSimi on July 1, 2010 at 9:39 pm
• 333 inches of snow on the mountains?!!! Sure hope the 2011 Dream Home Comes with a high-powered snow blower and a couple of snowmobiles. One with a side saddle for shopping trips.

Lessie on July 1, 2010 at 10:13 pm
• Now that's funny Lessie……I can picture it now….:)

faykaygay on July 1, 2010 at 10:32 pm
• Faykaygay, at least that will give us better transportation options. I don't think snow shoe-s should be the only alternative means for getting around in 333 inches of snow.

Lessie on July 2, 2010 at 12:19 am
• I love that idea Lessie…if it's a big enough side "seat" I could put my dogs in it ….haha :)

Zoie1361 on July 1, 2010 at 11:59 pm
• Way to go, Zoie! All creatures should have options in 333 inches of snows. As I visualize your dogs in the side seat, it's too funny, especially if they wear ski eyewear.

Lessie on July 2, 2010 at 12:21 am
• haha great idea Lessie and they do indeed have goggles (long story)… :)

Zoie1361 on July 2, 2010 at 12:34 am
• Options are indeed a must, Lessie. I informed the girls (Khazzie and Simi) instead of their scarves, boas, and halters—we're going to be adding kitty boots, snow suits, and Foster Grants to the wardrobe. On the other hand, I've taken them to Mt. Hood in the winter—and they get an average of 500-600" of snow. Khaz loved it, Simi refused to get out of the car. On the bright side, summer and fall are warm and wonderful—at least they were the last time I visited Vermont—–many years ago.

MeKhazSimi on July 2, 2010 at 3:51 pm
• It will have to be a pretty big side seat to fit Soney. He weighs almost as much as I do! So do they make goggles for dogs? Oh no we have to go shopping again! It was hard enough for Soney to pick out a bathing suit for DBCoop's pool party. Now we have to find ski gear too. Better go shopping!

• Alice, My Maggie is a big girl too probably around 80 lbs. She is part Lab like most mutts, but has the strangest coloration ever. She is brown with black markings like a Holstein. She has a white blaze on her chest, and three white feet. She has a massive chest, and people think she might be part pit bull. She has a Labs dewlaps, and disposition. I call her Maggie the Wonderdog because I wonder exactly what kind of dog she is? What I know is that she is a love, a good watchdog, and mine.

AnneEliseSouth on July 2, 2010 at 8:06 pm
• Hi Alice, yep they definitely sell goggles for dogs. We'll just have to request a larger seat. so it could either fit your Sonny, Anne's Maggie or my 3 dogs Sophie, Zoie & Bella !!! I bet in Stowe they have desinger cloths for pets….haha I don't think I would go that far but a sweater and paw shoes/boots might be a necessity.

• Alice we'll just have to request a large seat for Soney and Anne for Maggie too. They do indeed sell goggles for dogs haha. I'm sure Stowe will no doubt carry designer cloths for dogs. I don't think I'd go that route but a sweater for each of them and boots or s h o e s would probably be a necessity :) . My dogs love the cold !

AnneEliseSouth on July 2, 2010 at 3:27 pm

• Thanks Ed, you gave me the word of the day! Nebulous, great word. I love words, and I haven't heard this one used very often. See it really doesn't take much to make some of us happy!

That Mary, she does keep us on our toes. I got all excited when I thought those twin peaks were the view from the great room. Come to think i of it, why should I get too excited about a house with 40 million to one odds of winning? Guess I can't help it it's the thrill of the chase after all.

• Hi joplays…..thank you for your nice comment on my beagles. They are "true" brothers ( same dad and mom ) different litters. The oldest is one and a half years old and his name is D.O.G.
( spelled out ) and the other is ASTRO ( one year old ). These dogs are the most LOVING dogs !! They adore physcial contact and are sweet and gentle.
I lost my pomeranian of 17 years about two years ago and missed him dearly. The " brothers " are a joy in my life and I would have never thought of owning a beagle before but what a great happy and grand time they give to my husband and to myself.
I am sorry for your loss of your " Kellie ". I know that time heals but memories last a life time.

33. OK everyone, this is just weird! Several people were asking where the mountain view was taken from, and I could not understand why because I was sure that Mary had said it was taken from the future position of the great room. Then I went back and read her comment and it did not say anything like that! I thought I must be hallucinating again until I realized I had two windows open, and the first one had this quote from Mary:

I’ve included an amazing photo of the moutains, viewable from what will be the great room, and a shot of our construction crew at work. Also, make sure you check out time-lapse pics of the construction site – new photos were added yesterday.

I remembered that she had misspelled the word mountain and thought about teasing her and asking her to change it, then went on to other things and forgot. Looks like she did change it, and changed her comment as well! So Mary, is that a view from the future great room, or not?!?!?

CplusE on July 1, 2010 at 10:01 pm
• CplusE, poor Mary doesn't stand a chance against the eagle eyes and sharp wits on this blog. Sure hope the view is from the great room. Can't imagine those mountains covered with 333 inches of snow. I think my arms would be worn out from all that shoveling. Whoever wins the 2011 Dream Home will certainly be fit, even if they aren't fit when they win it! :D

Lessie on July 1, 2010 at 10:21 pm
• This is uncanny—-I too read the statement that it was going to be the view from the great room–then I when I went back to check before I replied to a blogger –it was gone. I thought I was dreaming. Thanks for explaining this.

MeKhazSimi on July 1, 2010 at 10:38 pm
• I agree, I read the bit about the view being from the Great Room. What's up with that? Twilight Zone material again.

AnneEliseSouth on July 1, 2010 at 11:38 pm
• Yep! Caught by C&E again. She can't get anything by you. LOL.

I remember the great room comment too. My guess here, is that the great room will be comparable to the Texas Dream Home (I hope but probably smaller) with views on both sides, with the biggest windows towards the skiers.

Remember just a guess.

So she may not have been entirely wrong, however she probably didn't want to mislead us into thinking that it was the main view. The mountains in pic are probably from a smaller view from the front of the home from the great room. IMHO She may have also been told the "great room" isn't that big.

34. Your virtual trip to Stowe continues! You sampled fine wines yesterday and will experience the performing arts tonight, so what’s on the agenda for tomorrow? Why not shopping!

If you love to antique, then plan on spending a full day or more exploring numerous antique shops in the area. With Stowe as a base, you'll find more than 20 antique shops all within an hour's drive. There's also a flea market in the neighboring town of Waterbury every Saturday throughout the summer and fall. Two antique shops worth checking out are Sir Richards Antiques Center, 6 miles south of Stowe on the right, just before the Cold Hollow Cider Mill, and Upper Pucker Antiques and Oddtiques at 1091 Upper Pucker Street in Stowe.

Should you really feel the need to unleash our inner shopaholic, plan on spending some time investigating the Seven Miles of Sales, Vermont's largest town-wide sale! More than 60 independent locally-owned?boutiques, galleries, and one-of-a-kind specialty stores open their doors with special deals, outdoor tent sales, and more! This event runs from Friday, July 2nd, through Sunday, July 4th, at locations all around Stowe.

I do love to shop – Fourth of July weekend in Stowe is starting off with a bang!

CplusE on July 1, 2010 at 10:27 pm
• I can't wait to see what you have planned for us CplusE, I love vintage shopping and antiquing, Let's all go on a shopping spree. The few pieces I have, have been passed way down including a urn that was at the worlds fair, and a soft wood table that my parents bought from Mexico. It's one of those long Thanksgiving tables. Oh the fun we could all have on the fourth of July- hot diggety!!

35. As well as house plans next week, I hope Mary will post an explanation about the clues. Do they ever do this? We spent weeks having fun with this and then abruptly—it's over—-and then there was the long no-man's land wait before we were told it was Vermont. I was way off base with the clues but it still would be fun to see how the clues ended up at Stowe. My guess was Points West, Bend OR . Oh well, just chatting here.

41. I think Mary is playing around with us. Posting a comment, leaving it just a little while, and then changing it to see if we're paying attention. Either that or the blog admin. didn't like the idea of us knowing that was the view from the great room. Can't imagine that much snow, of course, it probably isn't all at one time. One winter here we had 91 inches, but the most we had on the ground at any one time was about 18". 333" at one time would be over 27 feet. Hope there is plenty of space to lay in provisions so you don't have to leave the lodge until spring. Ha-Ha! It's going to be beautiful and fabulous. Can't want to see more. Thank you HGTV.<3

• I agree with you. Chicago is a great city. I have travelled for fourteen years with my work and because of that I have worked all over the country and Chicago is exciting! Clean and Cultural advantages galore. I live in rural Illinois now but I was born and raised in Chicago. I love returning and I love how the city is planned and how it celebrates sports, music, art and education. Seriously it is a fabulous city! But we do have snow and cold. It has four seasons and it has more parks including dog parks than any city in the United States. Mayor Daley has won awards for his effort to go Green. If you never have travelled there I suggest you go in the summer during taste of Chicago. You will not be disappointed! Madison is also great and Grand Beach Michigan is where many Chicagoans have summer homes along Lake Michigan. The midwest is lovely! Another area that is not as cold but not too far from Chicago six hours by car and that is St. Louis Missouri. All of these cities are great choices.

46. Hello HGTV, this is Janzee. When you said treehouse, I suddenly became a kid again, there were sparkles in my eyes and the memories flashed back. High above the trees, in a red rumpledown treehouse, with an open sun-roof, I spent many a weekend with my best friend Stevie. He did all he could to offer me the essentials a little lady would need, including peanut butter and jelly sands, a pitcher of Kool Aid, and a makehift, pulley system to bring up supplies. In that house we nursed two small birds back to health before setting them free a they flew from a neighboring branch. The word Treehouse— and all the sky high thoughts that a dreamer can imagine-yes!

Janzee on July 1, 2010 at 8:48 pm
• To hear Tree House Lodge is amazing isn't it? Don't think I have ever heard of a tree house lodge.

I wish Mary would bring back the word great room and add the word castle.

• treehouse – love that thought too – taking off on my bike as a kid with a little bag of fruit hanging from the handlebars of my purple Schwinn bicycle with my dog Sandy in the basket on the front. Ok my name is Jo – I was a tomboy & still am in a lot of ways. Dad probably wanted another boy & almost got one . . more skinned knees than I can count & mom had trouble getting me to wear shoes in the summer before I got the bike one Xmas. My sister got barbies – I got one tossed it aside & played with my hotwheels – Creepy Crawler set – or caught bugs to watch em then let em go. definately tree climbing. loved to swim & still do.

joplays on July 1, 2010 at 10:44 pm
• How fun that must have been—a real treehouse. We owned a large prune orchard when my sisters(4 of us) were small—-and the closest thing to a treehouse we had was climbing around in the trees–prune trees have wonderful soft forked branches that you can sit in for hours.

MeKhazSimi on July 2, 2010 at 4:38 pm
• Thanks MeKhazSimi, your memory with your sisters is wonderful. I think it is that childlike wonder that will be brought into the HGTV "treehouse," offering the winner a sense of creative freedom. Having a vista, where you look out over the land areas below, would probably remind you of that nesting spot in the fork of the trees. I hope you have written this story, and offer it to all the children in your family.

Janzee on July 2, 2010 at 7:29 pm
• Now that brings back memories! I used to pick prunes and apricots in the summer when I was a teenager! I don't remember soft branches when the ladder would fall against them though! ^_^

EdinOregon on July 3, 2010 at 4:36 am
• We had ten acres of prunes and Dad used a "prune shaker" —he refused to use the tractor shaker version because it harmed the roots of the trees. The prune shaker (long pole with a hook, and very hard on the body to shake each branch—- leaves the ground blue, blue, blue, with prunes—-and then he hired the neighborhood kids and "us girls" to pick them—-three buckets filled a prune box—25 cents a box we made—-and then as the sun went down—-we got to help load them and drive them to the prune dryer down the gravel road. The best part, at that time, was we ususlly got to skip first week of school because of this.!

In a lot of ways our children these days are deprived of a lot of things that taught "good old responsibility"—-and it's not all their fault—-on the one hand— I feel sad for these younger generations–on the other hand they are brilliant "techy's" and much more aware of the world than we were—so maybe every previous generation feels some of these thoughts—-I'm glad I didn't live through the dust bowl and the great deperssion–like my parents— so who knows.

• What magical memories! My childhood treehouse was in a vacant lot with no other trees around. The tree was dead too.

• It's a wonderful word -"magic",thankyou booms, and I'll bet on that vacant lot you had a whole stage to create your own wonderful stories. I am just reading, after many years Louise Hay's, You Can Heal Your Life. It seems that we can give ourselves persmission to capture that childlike wonder at this moment, every day.

• Janzee, Louise Hay is such an inspration. And yes, every year I'm the Aunt who jots down the stories from all five of our family's generations, not because I'm "special"but just because of the "ness" that Dupree(in the movie You,Me & Dupree) focused on that resides within each of us. In this fast paced virtual reality that we seem to be living in today, I hope that somewhere down the road one or two of the nieces or nephews will see within these stories their little piece of special—–"ness" that makes their heart sing and pass it on.

• More than reading somebody's manufactured novel, I love these stories. Your words are amazing, and you know when something is "right" when you feel it all over. You are the favorite aunt, and in every family that special aunt is called on as the story teller, safe place, admiration society. She is the one, maybe a bit wild at heart, that the nieces and nephews hold a high regard for, and when you least expect it, a story will surface, and you know that the "light is jumpin from their eyes" and they are doing just what they are intended and blessed to do.

• caught lizards & horned toads. Horned toads are now protected thank God – they are so cute & keep bad bug population down. think the farmers who use ladybugs for control of aphids on cotton & other plants are green thinkers too. glad some smarty-marty figured that out. don't you think the ccentrifuge that Kevin Costners' (scientist) brother came up with is great for the spill in the gulf. the people there are still trying to save the pelicans & other wildlife as best they can. Keep God's creatures in your prayers please. Our need for fossil fuels did this to them just as much as BP's irresponsibility for safety.

• Amen joplays. I just installed my umbrella clothesline today. (I got a great deal at clotheslineshop.com.) I used to have the t pole clotheslines on our farm and when we lived north of the river. It looks a little out of place in a Leawood neighborhood but it is not against covenants or city code. My daughter was amazed that the clothes dried so quickly. The t-shirts were dry within 10 minutes! All of us should do a what we can to reduce our dependence on all kinds of non-renewable resources.

• mine is the T pole & may dig after this rain & put it back up – or paint it first. there is a plant being built in Tennessee to make the Nissan Leaf in 2012 but the charge only last 100 miles. there are no recharging stations so far for trips. ok to go to work then plug it in at night at home with the special charging equipment – but what about going further???

•
Just don't paint it pink! If we ever get back on some acreage I will put up another t-pole line. I think they are better for sheets and you can dry more on them. I remember making tent from sheets on our t-pole clothesline as a kid.

48. You know you're from Vermont when…
You know the four seasons: Winter, Still Winter, Almost Winter, and Construction.
Driving is better in the winter because the potholes get filled with snow.
You owe more money on your snowmobile than your car.
You have more miles on your snowblower than your car.
Your snow-blower gets stuck on the roof.
You've taken your kids trick-or-treating during a blizzard.
Making it home during Mud Season is a competitive sport.
The trunk of your car doubles as a deep freezer.
You clean the grease off your outdoor grill on a weekly basis so the bears won't prowl on your patio.

49. You know you're from Vermont when…
Your idea of a traffic jam is 10 cars waiting to pass a logging truck
Vacation means going to Burlington.
You measure distance in hours.
You use a down comforter in the summer.
You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.
You think of the major food groups as deer meat, beer, fish, and berries.
You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend knows how to use them.
It takes you 3 hours to go to the store for one item even when you're in a rush because you have to stop and talk to everyone in town.
.

• Being able to leave doors unlocked is so appealing to me. When we lived on the farm, our home was broken into. The father/son team that did it had cased and broken into several farm houses in our area. They were caught when they dropped they casing book with their notes on the lawn of one of their victims. Inside the cover it had " If found, please return to (insert their names.) One for the stupid criminal files.

50. only been snow skiing twice. but went tubing down some hills that was a blast. It was a giant tube & there were 5 of us facing crisscross atop each other on the ride down. I was the smallest so I was on top.
When it hit a bank and went airborn & flipped over I got buried in the snow with everyone on top of me – it's just a funny memory. that was on a church trip to a Lodge.
