Building a Mountain Lodge

Hi folks,

Sorry that it’s been awhile since I’ve posted. Things are moving fast at the HGTV Dream Home 2011 construction site. I’ve already chatted with the builder and the architect about this home. I think it’s safe to say that this lodge will be the most outstanding Dream Home to date. Think treehouse. Think amazing views of the mountainside. Think generations of family members gathered around the dining table for Thanksgiving dinner. It’s going to be that kind of home.

I’ve included an amazing photo of the mountains, snapped near the home site, and a shot of our construction crew at work. Also, make sure you check out time-lapse pics of the construction site – new photos were added yesterday.

Cheers!

  1. I've threatened to send cookies to the Dream Team before. Do you think that would get their attention?

Maybe if I sent ice cold lemonade as well.

You know I think it's all in the choice of the delivery method.

Cami on July 19, 2010 at 5:31 pm
  2. LISTEN UP MARY! We are talking turkey here or is it tuna fish meatballs or chicken salad. We have been kind and nice for way too long. We even did your messy cleanup of all that ice cream. Us forks are getting tired. We are polished and ready to begin a new adventure. Bring it on! DID YOU HEAR ME MARY! Don't want to say it again. CARRY ON!

  3. How long has the current poll on the main Dream Home site been up?

I think it's funny that -The Sea- and -The Mountains- have gotten most of the votes. I am guessing people don't care too much for the desert and the country during the hot summer season.

I'll bet the poll results would be totally different during the Winter Months.

-The Country- would likely be most popular during the Spring and Fall season.

Cami on July 19, 2010 at 1:04 pm
  4. Gosh, I'm so disappointed I missed the ice cream fight! Glad KP was done by the time I found my way here….I'm not up to cleaning up after you all yet…give me another day.

I am surprised HGTV didn't intervene during that fight…..the place was a mess!

Do they always leave us to our own devices this long???

CeeJoy on July 19, 2010 at 6:42 pm
    • If we don't get anything new today, we may need to start planning our next big event. I've been considering designing a mega sized high pressure soda pop sprayer.

How about a Soda Pop Blow Out.

Cami on July 19, 2010 at 7:37 pm
      • HA HA….my dad used to make home made soda…..sometimes it would BLOW the lids right off! Sounded like a machine gun firing!

  5. I voted country because I prefer living away from the noise, pollution, hustle/bustle of a big city; give me room to breathe clean fresh air out in the country where you can let your kids & dogs run free !!!

  6. HGTV Why didn't you put a Green Home tab at the top of this page???? It would be very handy!

CeeJoy on July 19, 2010 at 6:47 pm
    • I agree CeeJoy, I have to google for HGTV green home just to get to the page. It's easier than trying to find it on the website. I've also been googling for HGTVpro.

Cami on July 19, 2010 at 6:56 pm
      • I have it "bookmarked" so I can access that way, but a tab would be faster.

CeeJoy on July 19, 2010 at 7:05 pm
    • Did anyone notice this before?? Up at the top under Dream Home to the right of products it says Green Home. Did they just add it or was it there before? I think they just added it. CeeJoy glad you spoke up.

Cami on July 19, 2010 at 7:12 pm
    • There's no way it was there!!! COOL!

CeeJoy on July 19, 2010 at 7:21 pm
      • I am pretty sure I would have noticed that before too, since I have been looking for links to the Green Home, HGTVPro, and DIY, pretty much everyday.

Cami on July 19, 2010 at 7:26 pm
        • I know…..it appeared pretty quickly though…,, Thanks HGTV! Now that we have your attention……are you ready to change things up a bit???? Folks are getting bored here…maybe boring!:)

    • HGTV, CHAD…….Thanks for listening……..as I mentioned on the GH blog, it would be nice if this new tab took us directly to the blog instead of the Main page!:)

  8. When are we gona see the floor plans and when can we start entering. I can hardly wait.

Springier on July 19, 2010 at 7:32 pm
    • Hello Springier, we are all just waiting and waiting, for the floor plans. The Sweepstakes for the Dream Home usually begins on January 1st every year.

Welcome to the Dream Home blog.

CeeJoy on July 19, 2010 at 8:43 pm
    • Last Dream Home entrance was on Jan.1st. so there is a loooonnngggggg way to go
and we don't know when the floor plans will be reveiled.

SandyLA on July 19, 2010 at 8:24 pm
  9. Perhaps they are waiting to incorporate our ideas for a dream home … not wanting to disappoint us and leave anything out and so are needing to reorganize the floor plan a little… perhaps they need a few more ideas before the unveiling of the floor plans. I know that we all have ideas that we want to share re what we would like to see. Perhaps we should all restate what we would love in a dream home. The view and the activities involved… I love a butlers pantry and his and hers master bath … media room with Stressless furniture. The kohler Karbon faucet is great to go in an area where you can arrange flowers. An art area as well as a computer command post where you can have privacy but also be in command … of view and activities. A separate area for guests. Library office space… A sun room and/or tower to enjoy the tranquility and view. Perhaps a conservatory like area where there is container garden growing greenhouse off of the sun room area. With a spa in the sun room but with a wet bar. Miele appliances would be wonderful in the kitchen as well. And of course all the toys – that are a necessity for a resort area … golf ( electric cart), snowboards, skiis, kayak with peddles and sail, snowmobile…. and a generator is useful.
It is currently raining in Stowe… the weather shows sun for tomorrow but rain for the rest of the week. Enjoy your day … and your dreams …

joplays on July 20, 2010 at 1:54 am
  10. 1hr. 15 min. until 5pm HGTV time. Let the countdown begin.. Mary are you there? Give us a sign. Something a little more noticeable than adding a Green Home link. Floor plans would be nice.

Cami on July 19, 2010 at 7:51 pm
    • knowing Mary she'll probably give us a -Waiting Room- sign. Or maybe a message. "Please Hold" Then she'll turn on some elevator music. "Course then we'll all assume that what she is trying to tell us is that there will be an elevator in the Dream Home.

Cami on July 19, 2010 at 2:54 pm
      • I think an elevator sounds like a great idea. … along with a dumbwaiter… if needed. and laundry shoots. Guest area to include more than one bedroom perhaps two bedrooms and a wet bar & sitting area.

        pj4joy on July 19, 2010 at 8:02 pm
        • How about a smart waiter with culinary skills as well? ; )

raggedyanny on July 20, 2010 at 5:06 pm

    • Maybe MARY's just hit a rough patch. You know, when the creative process stalls out. I think it's often referred to as writer's blog. I run into that myself now and then.

However, I was just informed by an anonymous source that MARY did post a new thread on the DIY Blog Cabin on 15 July, so I expect that she's pedaling as fast as she can to get caught up here in the Dream Home blog. Tomorrow perhaps? As for me, I'm off to the movies to see Leo's new movie, Inception. Maybe I'll learn the secret to reading people's thoughts…. Wouldn't that be fun!

DBCoop on July 19, 2010 at 10:06 pm
      • If you want to learn to read peoples thoughts, you have to become a caretaker of kids that don't speak. ; ) Then you will have no choice but to read minds.

You see… First comes autism, then their caretakers DNA changes to include ESP, and every generation after that just becomes more and more clairvoyant.

You think I'm kidding. I am very serious. Those scientist who research autism, probably haven't thought that far ahead yet.

Hey Coop, see if you can sell that idea to a producer and then share the profit with me.

Cami on July 19, 2010 at 5:55 pm
      • Coop: What did you think of the movie? I've read (about the movie) that there is a way through dreams to actually influence peoples actions. Could we use this technique on Mary? Force her to reveal the Floor Plans? What did Leo do, and was he successful? Please, Coop, post your very first movie review on the blog.

  12. Hey everyone, sorry I never really responded on the subject of the post cards. I admit I made that comment "tongue in cheek"…maybe it's my dry sense of humor or something. I'm really not starting my postcards yet, and if I do send some in, I plan to be conservative.

I guess there's always the rare chance they could change the rules, and there would be no mail-ins (is that legal?). Think how boring and bland drawing the winner would be……no bins over flowing with PC and no balloons……Jim, just sitting at his computer…..ho hum…..so if they allow postcards this time…I'm in…..I'll send a few to add to the excitement. :)

  13. pj4joy, You think that HGTV doesn't want to disappoint us? Well its too late for that?
Mary, have we finally insulted you too much and you have quit? Is it taking so long for
your replacement? I personally feel disappointed and sad, and angry and a whole lot
more. If it will not be shown to us now, did you or we start on this too early? Tell us to
come back in a week if it will take that much time. That would be the kinder thing to do

Believe me, as Cami will attest, you can get very lost in the magic of the islands. If that's the case we should all give Mary twenty lashes with her wilted leis for leaving us in need of FLOOR PLANS.

Katydiddle on July 20, 2010 at 11:13 pm

Jack's and Mary's kids getting all their attention while we all wait.
(MUST BE A TREAT BEING ON OF THEIR KIDS!)

Would be nice if they would contact us daily at noon or dinner time
by WEBCAM and let us in on some news.
Maybe some news confirming some of Cami's
ESP Construction site updates. Are you also scouting

Can anyone explain why we can vote TEN times each day for our choices of fun things to do if we win? For some reason this doesn't make sense to me. Why would they not want a simple ONE vote from each person visiting the site each day? I;m sure there is a logical explanation—I just can't see it. ha

We Just finished up our vacation on Saturday, so I've been playing catch-up with being the maid, general contractor, mom, lifeguard, etc…(labors of love).

I should be back in the groove, soon….hopefully. :) Maybe by then we will have some more construction topics…(just putting it out there for the Universe to hear :)

All the begging, pleading, promising, whining, threatening and cajoling seems to have had a negative effect on creating any acknowledgements from our best friends in the whole wide world (like Mary, Jack, Linda, Gail, and that little gecko, Jamie). 32. More lots are to be created as building sites in Stowe with the recent approval of project #4229 by the Development Review Board on 1 June 2010. The street name location has been designated as 211 Liftline Drive, where a 3.2 acres parcel will be subdivided into four lots. Lots will range from 1.22 acres, .82 acres, .37 acres, with .9 acres of common land.

Just in case you don't win the Stowe Dream Home, you may want to speak to the folks at Spruce Peak Realty now to find out what kind of bargain you can negotiate with them for one of these prime lots. Good luck, and keep us advised if you come to an agreement on a sale price. Hopefully the 1.22 acres site will still be available for your potential dream home.

  33. When the Blog Slows Down, Could Hibernation be the Answer?

Here's some fun reading (well, I thought so anyway) from a web article by Nicholas K. Geranios The Associated Press – Published: July 18, 2010 (with a few of my own comments)

Who would have guessed that bears have all the luck. Read on—Grizzly bears love pastries, can be 50 percent body fat and spend nearly half the year sleeping. (Sound all too familiar?)

Yet the hibernating bears don’t suffer heart attacks, have no hardening of the arteries, no fatty deposits or any circulation issues, said Charles Robbins, director of the Washington State University bear research center. Robbins, who founded the center in 1986, and other WSU scientists are seeking to learn how bear hearts stay so healthy, and whether the answers can be applied to humans.

DBCoop on July 20, 2010 at 12:11 am
    • “The changes in the heart that occur in hibernation are things you and I couldn’t survive,” said Lynne Nelson, a veterinary cardiologist who has spent seven years studying the bears. “Yet bear hearts are very healthy.”

Scientists have found that grizzly hearts drop from more than 80 beats per minute when bears are awake to less than 20 beats, and sometimes into single digits, when bears are hibernating. Nelson said echocardiograms show blood starting to pool in the heart, but the bears do not suffer clots.

So far, Nelson and Robbins have only theories to explain how the bears, which share 95 percent of human DNA, maintain healthy hearts. They have published papers saying that protein changes make bear hearts stiffer during hibernation, allowing them to maintain their shape and perhaps avoid the formation of clots. Bears also shut down two of the four heart chambers without suffering damage. The scientists are also studying beta receptors and beta blockers in bears, which control heart rate.

DBCoop on July 20, 2010 at 5:24 am
      • Washington State’s Bear Center is the only university facility in the nation that has adult grizzly bears, Nelson said. Grizzlies are listed as a threatened species, although numbers have rebounded since the 1970s.

On a recent hot day, an 8-year-old adult named John frolicked in a steel tub of water, climbing in and out and shaking the water out of his thick fur. Another named Frank stood on his hind legs, towering over his handlers, while Nelson fed him slices of apple through the fence. The bears eat a mixture similar to dog food, plus salmon and road-killed deer, apples and day-old cakes and pies donated by Safeway, Robbins said. “We ring a cowbell and they know there is cake and pie for them,” Robbins said. “Sugar and grease, who doesn’t love that?” (Can't argue with that statement.)

The bears give blood samples, have their blood pressure measured, are given ultrasounds and echocardiograms. Some of the bears are trained to stick a limb out of the cage to be tested, even as they hibernate, she said.

DBCoop on July 20, 2010 at 5:30 am
        • Scientists are looking at other aspects of bear hibernation. Seth Donahue, a researcher at Michigan Tech, has written that black bears do not develop osteoporosis during long periods of hibernation because their cells continue to produce new bone-making material as they sleep. That could eventually be helpful in battling osteoporosis in humans.

Bears also manage to maintain muscle strength and mass, even though humans would lose some 70 percent of muscle strength in similar inactivity. One reason is that bears appear to exercise while they sleep by performing whole body, isometric contractions that start at the neck and move down several times a day. (Wow, exercising while you sleep!)

Now, if I could only duplicate all of these amazing physiological feats, I could eat all of the pie, cake, ice cream and assorted pastries I wanted, sleep as long as I felt like, not worry about the gym membership, and pass my physicals with flying colors. What a life! I now have a whole new appreciation for bears. I never thought we'd have so much to learn from them….

          • Wow, Coop, That was an interesting report! Thank you. :) :)

JWmson on July 20, 2010 at 12:49 pm
          • Wow, eat all you want, sleep all you want, exercise in your sleep, no cardiovascular problems, no osteoporosis — and big and scary enough to make everyone else respect you! Who wouldn't want to be a bear? Plus you get to feast on all the salmon, honey, and blueberries you want — who is going to stop you? LOL!

Cami on July 20, 2010 at 8:05 pm
    • Coop: Fascinating subject. I think the problem might be associating hibernation with sleep. Two different things. Humans sleep. Bears hibernate. I'm going to do more research on this as soon as I catch up from my mini vacation.
You had us going awhile with your "fear" of bears. But you are such a softy at heart. Cuddles and sweet dreams. No calories allowed.

And if you happen to have some old or broken skis that you no longer use, just bring them in to the store and have something custom built!

Or immortalize a favorite pet by having artist Katherine Washburn and her staff hand-paint a likeness on one of their pottery creations:

Could this be the in the trees? We see that Linda is in her recycle mode. Why take an old tub with claw feet, remove the feet and enclose it with …. bark? No matter how rustic the decor, it's going to be one amazing home.
