Building a Mountain Lodge

Hi folks,

Sorry that it’s been awhile since I’ve posted. Things are moving fast at the HGTV Dream Home 2011 construction site. I’ve already chatted with the builder and the architect about this home. I think it’s safe to say that this lodge will be the most outstanding Dream Home to date. Think treehouse. Think amazing views of the mountainside. Think generations of family members gathered around the dining table for Thanksgiving dinner. It’s going to be that kind of home.

I’ve included an amazing photo of the mountains, snapped near the home site, and a shot of our construction crew at work. Also, make sure you check out time-lapse pics of the construction site – new photos were added yesterday.

Cheers!

  1. Under "Sustainable Building Materials" Linda mentions that an old oversized barn door will be used as artwork in the family room, and that "It becomes a bit of wood panelling." I guess Linda doesn't watch "Design Star"! In the latest episode the judges really hated the wood panelling put in by a contestant and mentioned how they are always tearing it out when they design a room! At least used as artwork it can be taken down and hidden when a panelling hater comes to visit! LOL!

    • I was thinking it would make a great background for a four season painting. Maybe they will give it to Woody to paint his cow murals in the four different seasons.

Cami on July 20, 2010 at 8:20 pm
    • I think LESS is MORE……I just hope they don't use so much that it makes the great room or whatever room too dark. Natural timber beams and other exposed framing already give it a deeper, "woodsy" feel.

I do like the style of the door Linda found…..looks like it could be from a hayloft. Like Cami said, it would make a good back drop for art work.

CeeJoy on July 20, 2010 at 11:21 pm
      • Maybe could be used as a coffee table top?

        • I like that idea!

CeeJoy on July 21, 2010 at 12:57 am
    • That was my thought as well…I wonder if Linda heard the judges' comments about wood paneling. They were definitely not very flattering.

As artwork, seems like it would work great. Like Cami brought up, one of Wood'ys cow murals would be fun, though it depends on what other artwork Linda has in mind or has already purchased.

    • Seeing it was said…. "An oversized barn door discovered at the warehouse will be repurposed as artwork and mounted on the door in the family room." Right away I have another vision other than a coffee tabletop.

My mind is seeing many lovely wood tones. Tastefully low-key stained wood carvings to be inset into the divisions of that great barn door. May only need a couple or as many as you like. I think the top "V" shape would look grand with a spectacular 3-D wood carving of a crouched snowskier inserted into a part of that space. Could even fit in some Vermont wildlife carvings on that door. OR even a wood carving of the name the owners give to this LODGE. I would vote for wood tones over paint for a more distinguished look.
Just the shadows from the firelight hitting the 3-D carvings will give them movement and interest. IMO

RJMstone on July 21, 2010 at 3:01 am
      • One wood carving that I really like is a pinecone – somewhat open.
An ACORN? – Are there any oak trees up there?

      • I like that idea very much. That would be amazing.

Cami on July 21, 2010 at 6:15 am
    • I missed the "over sized" part of the description……RJMStone has some good ideas for adding wood sculpture to the door. If we knew the actual size of the door it would be helpful. I am curious to see how Linda incorporates it into the decorating scheme.

    • Under Building a Foundation…..

#2 & #9 & #14 – Can't tell if that light color down below the back of the Dream Home is a water stream or dry rock stream that gets wet only at times. Could be where (in winter time) that you could ski in/ and ski out on a snow trail.
Or could it be a road?…… but looks more like stones. But maybe shadows are playing tricks on a road?

#16 – In the shade on the right is that a part of an old building or tower behind all those trees? Is that also a door or window in that shaded rock area? You can see it in #12 too.
Or are there natural rock outcroppings there?? A smuggler's secret tower?

We have a claw footed tub in our master suite bath, but we also installed a separate 4ft wide enclosed steam shower. (We did the steam shower because of the cold winter's here. Nothing warms your bones quite as well…) I hope they provide something like that at Stowe…

DBCoop on July 20, 2010 at 11:35 pm
    • When I read "ski dorm", I was thinking separate from the main part of the home. I would still like to see kids rooms in the main part of the house.

  12. The Foundation link photos on HGTVPro were really interesting, especially #11, which showed the lot from a whole new angle, and gave a great view of the '60's mountain lodge that was on the site. What classic architecture in the roof lines of the old home.

Photo #14 showed what appeared to be a roadway at the bottom of the slope. I wonder if this is Route 108, or another access road passing the property?

    • It looks very attractive!
Do they spray it with a chemical to keep woodpeckers away?

RJMstone on July 21, 2010 at 3:37 am
      • I think woodpeckers would definitely give it that lived-in look. Rustic, back to nature, eco-friendly, and riddled with holes!

I suspect that there would be components in the product that woodpeckers would find unpalatable. Could be a question for our Super Fan, Gail.

As for maintenance—according to the website, "without the use of chemicals or preservatives, Appalachian buildings with poplar bark siding have stood virtually impervious to time and weather for more than 75 years." That's long enough for me.

Now….I've been thinking. I have an offer for you. I would like to offer my family as a quality assurance team. We can test your big rustic Dream Home, to insure it will hold up to the most active of families.

We will leave all of our permanent markers, crayons, and projectiles at home of course, and all tests will be overseen by parental management. Nothing will be harmed, unless in the parameters of ordinary household use. Our family Quality Assurance Team, will even provide these services for free, with a little for travel expenses of course. ; ) We will even clean up after ourselves before departure.

You will be provided with our official QA seal of approval. We can travel anytime between Dec. 5th-Jan 2nd. Sincerely Cami.

They can set up the xmas tree next to the fireplace and we can each mail a Blogger DH ornament to Stowe and you guys can decorate the tree before you leave. This would be great publicity for them—and best of all you guys would have the time of your lives!

CeeJoy on July 21, 2010 at 5:29 am
    • Good point Ceejoy. This will especially be true with the home being set within the trees.

Our home is like that, but luckily we had an opportunity to be in the area while we were planning the remodel. The sun "seems" to set earlier because of the trees and it getting lost behind them. To solve our problem, we putt transoms above the doors. In another hallway, we recycled the old divided light sashes of the home and placed them all high along the top of the wall. (the utility room is on the other side of the wall), placing them high allowed the light from the outside window to pass thru the utility room and light up the hallway – without showing all the rooms components. Our house is much lighter this way, and the big plus is that it save on electric. We find that we rarely use the light switches in the hall.

Ok, short of the long – I hope they consider transoms if they have some interior rooms such as hallways.

  27. I'm giving up on a new blog. It will come when it comes. So take your time Mary, we aren't in any hurry. Just whenever you get around to it will be fine. So you know, maybe tomorrow or the next day. Whatever works with your schedule.

Alright!!! What on earth is wrong with me??? It must be the glass art work, it did something me. Mesmerizing.

Cami on July 21, 2010 at 1:35 am
    • Snap out of it, Cami! Mary may have a good reason for taking so long to post a new thread, and we can be understanding, but that doesn't mean we have to approve! Just a gentle reminder, Mary — we are still waiting!

CplusE on July 21, 2010 at 11:04 am
    • Whew, Cami..I wasn't sure what you were doing…at first I thought OH NO she's pulling a naturelover..
But then it changed, and I though…Hmmm, maybe she's been hanging around kids too much and she is trying the ole Upside-down, behind the back reverse psychology ploy…and I panicked – Mary would definitely see through that one! But you pulled it out…thank goodness,

I'm gonna chalk that one up to the sugar blues. You probably just crashed from coming off that sugar high of the ice cream fight. Grab a piece of cheese….You'll be just fine…but Don't Let it Happen Again!

CplusE and I will be your sugar sponsor. If you feel yourself slipping again, blog us and we will talk you out of it! (…heck…what are blogger buddies for if not to keep us on the straight-n-narrow? LOL)

        • Thanks Debra. How have you been? Looks like Mary is up to her old tricks, driving us crazy for lack of new information. I thought all the madness was going to end once the location was revealed.

I was upset I missed the food fight but hope to make it to Janzee's birthday celebration. We will have to ask her for ideas on themes and birthday cake flavors.

    • Wow, you gave us all a such a scare, Cami. Stay off of those art glass websites—we need you strong and focused—to speak for all those dreamers out there in blogland, and ensure liberty, justice, and a new blog thread for all.

      Carry on, mighty warrior!

DBCoop on July 21, 2010 at 4:40 pm
  28. I wonder if Linda Woodrum will go eclectic with the artwork?

Besides some contemporary pieces, it'd be fun to see some vintage items that can be used as art in a mountain lodge—skis (of course) along with boots, ski poles, a classic pair of snowshoe-s(!), even ice skates or an old sled or toboggan. Larger items can be suspended from the ceiling for added effect.

Whatever direction Linda goes, the magic of her style is bound to bring home the gold for this Dream Home. I'd ask for the envelope please, but it's far too early in the game to be handing out awards. MARY has many more secrets to share before we get to the closing ceremony.

But won't we be floored when we get our hands on those plans! In due time…in due time.

    • Lordy, I need to put on my glasses this morning!
I read your post as …………… "go electric…artwork".

I was reading and reading wondering how a neon Budweiser sign was going to blend in with the whole adirondack theme… LOL LOL

      Luckily, I read it wrong…LOL

      • Given the opportunity to add a design element to the Dream Home, it seems that joplays would have the neon beer sign up in no time, hence the name joplays Stowe n Go Inn. Which just shows that you can go electric AND go eclectic, all in the name of good taste!

DBCoop on July 21, 2010 at 4:15 pm
    • I hope they don't make it all "mountain ski lodge" themed. Living there and having the views of the mountains and woods would be all the "lodge" theme I would need. I hope she decorated it to be more of a home rather than "winter ski rental home."

boomer on July 21, 2010 at 12:30 pm
      • I agree with your post. Something classic, that will stand the test of time, but with rustic pieces celebrating the adirondack theme. I have to admit, I am a sucker for the antler chandeliers…but alas, it has been done. I did see a wonderful wine rack made from antlers….hmm.

There was a B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L Adirondack/craftsman $1.5M lake home in the mountains for sale. I wasn't impressed with the interior design…It could have been the birch bark wallpaper or the Moose print couch & chairs…possibly just the two combined. Anyway, it was too kitschy. (oooh, did I mention it had a moose drink butler…argh) It was soooo busy, nothing seemed to be able to be showcased -kitschy, kitschy, kitschy.

Luckily, I do have faith in Linda & DH's designs. Can't wait to see the wow factor.

zipdedoda on July 21, 2010 at 3:58 pm
        • A moose drink butler? Is that something like a dumbwaiter? A meandering moose wine rack? Is it some kind of dessert drink? A whipped chocolate moose frappé?

          • Ohhh, that reminds me…time for coffee!

          • Thanks! And having checked that out, I have seen them before in various catalogs, although not the moose drink butler per se, but the Santa and a facsimile of an English butler. How quaint.

DBCoop on July 21, 2010 at 5:54 pm
      • Boomer, I agree about the 'too ski lodge"——-it would take away the incentive to stroll down that mystically quiet snow-laden path of your avatar—–settle into an overstuffed leather chair—-rest your feet on the hand-hewn coffee table—sip a glass o f wine, or hot chocolate—- enjoy the flames dancing in the fireplace—- and people watch.

  29. Treat yourself to dinner at Michael’s on the Hill, a restaurant just south of Stowe which features “locally-driven European cuisine”. And while there, you may wish to sign up for cooking classes with Chef Michael Kloeti!

    http://michaelsonthehill.com/cooking-classes.shtm

One of the options is a Taste of Vermont menu featuring cheese, cider, and maple syrup – sounds good to me!

Even if you have no kitchen skills, it would still be fun to watch an expert get creative. And who knows – you may discover that you have more culinary talent than you thought!

  34. Hi everybloggie,
I'v had fun reading all your comments, ice cream fights :O) and web links! loved the moose video, and especially the BEAR ! Your link to HGTV '04 shows that Linda still looks just as good in 2010 ! Jack actually looks younger now, and still has that wonderful velvety voice !
I am so looking forward to this HGTV home, what a dream !!! Linda blows me away with her skill, because she does the interior and " catches the essence" of the home in such a way, that it's almost magical, yet she's never kitschy ( sp?) or tacky. She doesn't just nail up an old pair of ice skates above the mantel, she's spectacularly subtle. I love it. I wish I had an ounce of her talent and know-how. ( I have to squinch my eyes almost closed when I'm trying to match paint colors !! Duh. I'm hopeless:O)
But, on the bright side…I'm in love….with this HGTV 15th Anniversary Dream Home ! Okay…where's my swooning couch when I need it? lol

Glad to see you haven't completely disappeared Debra G. ; )

Welcome back to everyone that has comeback courage.

Hey I just realized something, this blog has almost achieved antique status, if you consider that blog years are similar to dog years.

1 blog day=5 human years. So this blog is really 100 years old. No wonder i've been feeling so old lately.

    • Finally had an opportunity to check out these amazing homes you found, Cami. Both are outstanding, and plenty to love about each one. The rustic lodge home has an absolutely gorgeous timbered great room, along with a stunning kitchen. I was surprised that with 3,780 square feet, it's described as a 3 bedroom, 2 bath…but it does have a den and downstairs bonus room.

The other plan is beautiful, a more contemporary look inside and out, and 4 bedrooms, 4 1/2 baths in 3,937 square feet. Lots to admire.

Loved the Eclectic Architectural Home with Craftsman Influence because of the beautiful stonework and fireplaces. (Of course I love stone anyway.) Even has a Juliet balcony and a reading tower! That covered entrance is superb!
