Pouring the Foundation

Believe it or not, things are happening at the HGTV Dream Home 2011 construction site. Today, I’d like to share a slideshow just launched by our friends at HGTVPro.com. It’s interesting to note that an old ski lodge did exist on the property and, before its demo, the Dream Team removed vintage barn wood from the interior, as well as other fixtures, which were traded in at the local salvage warehouse for items that will be used in the home’s interior design. More details on that to come!

  1. Hello fellow bloggers, things have been pretty slow on here, just wait 'til the floor plans are shown & watch things 'pop' !! Good news, insurance finally settled on my car wreck, so tomorrow it's off to buy a new car; haven't decided what kind I want yet; I'm just going to shop 'til I find the perfect one !!

    • I hope it was a just settlement. Have fun buying a new car.

  2. Hi CplusE,
Thanks for sharing your funny story about orange countertops & carpeting. I'd totally forgotten about the Shag Carpeting Craze. Remember using a carpet rake to get the long pile going in one direction ? Wonder what happened to all those plastic rakes, maybe in yard sales for a couple of decades,& will eventually be collector's treasures? The Mystique of Antique Plastique :O)

GoldieLocksBear on July 25, 2010 at 10:03 pm
    • We pulled up our shag carpet before we even moved in, so we never had to use the rake — it's bad enough having to rake the yard without having to rake your carpet as well! I've seen a couple of catalogs offering shag rugs for sale, so maybe those old rakes are still useful to some!

CplusE on July 26, 2010 at 3:53 pm
  3. When we moved into this old Salt Box Colonial there was orange shag carpeting in the bedrooms, it was the first thing we ripped out , revealing beautiful hardwood floors. No avocado green fibreglass bathtubs, I guess the modern era never reached Exeter. However, the original electrical wiring coming into the house was a cable, clad in a knitted asbestos sheath, as thick as my arm.( It looked powerful enough to power up "Old Sparky" ) We brought the wiring & plumbing up to code, did asbestos & lead remediation , then gradually worked on the house as our budget allowed, doing whatever we felt confident enough to tackle, & getting contractors to do the complicated stuff. We're the 5th owner's of this home, and it's had a smattering of famous visitors over it's life, including The Eisenhower's, Robert Frost and George Bush Senior . When we downsize, we'll leave the Famous Photos, for the next owners to pass along the history. Old houses should come with a Family Sized bag of popcorn and a complimentary DVD starring Tom Hanks in " The Money Pit" !

GoldieLocksBear on July 25, 2010 at 10:04 pm
    • I have a money pit & trying to save up to replace the cloth wiring throughout my home. A friend put up a new light fixture in the kitchen & said it could be a fire hazard. Then there is the old plumbing that needs to be replaced so remodeling is not an option until the hazards are taken care of. there is so much that needs to be done I am overwhelmed. Still none of it is as important when it comes to the life of a grandchild like JWmson's little Robert. My home is not famous except for being an eyesore. The yard is so huge it took me Sat & Sun mornings early just to mow it. Work all week & want to rest on the weekends but no time. Sorry just venting. I need to think my grandchildren are well & hope & pray for little Robert.. He feels guilty – I feel guilty worrying over objects.

    • What an exciting story Goldie. Whats about the town of Exeter that attracted some of the most prominent and othe most famous people of all time? And what were they doing in the home that you live in now? Are you of direct lineage to all of the people that wanted to gather at your house? I am so glad you stripped up the rugs to reveal the original floors that entertained and echoed these famous people. Did you have the history of the home before you bought it? Have the walls told you any stories?

    • I am so glad to see you 1naturelover, I have wondered and been concerned about you, I am glad you came in, and to share. You can now tell, that so many of us have suffered the slings and arrows and find this blog an uplifting rejuvenating and helpful experience. Do you have access to a cool pool where you can submerse yourself above waste level and do some slow methodical water weights and walk, no pressure on your back for about a half hour. Say blessings while you are walking. Drink eight glasses of water a day, and eat steamed veggies, no salt, no salt. No meat for a few months, but supplement the protein with fish, and skinless chicken. Keep a chart, but dont get too crazy or worried about your pressure. How is your digestion, and how do you do in the heat? Keep your body, on the cool side. If it is too hot, take a short walk inside around your house or apt. Are you taking any supplements/

    • Prayers for a quick resolution to your health problems are being sent your way. I am starting to sound like a broken record, but you might want to get your vitamin B12 levels checked. For many years I was having problems regulating my blood pressure — it seemed like every year I would have to try a new medication. Then my doctor checked my B12 levels and found they were very low — once I started on megadoses a lot of my minor health issues either abated or disappeared completely, and my blood pressure has held steady on the same medication for 3 years now. Of course there are many causes for high blood pressure, but this one is easily and inexpensively checked, and is often overlooked as a cause. Good luck to you!

CplusE on July 26, 2010 at 1:52 pm
    • Can certainly relate to your problem. Last week my husband's BP was 195/100 in the mornings when he got up. Finally talked him into calling his cardiologist and they changed his meds. Doing fine now. Ten years ago he had 8 bypasses and they are starting to go bad. One has collapsed down to 10% and some of the others are having problems. Drs. won't tell us the whole story as they don't want to worry him into having more heart attacks. He had three two years ago. This week after the new meds, he is doing fine and right now is out picking the cucumbers. He can't work any more so says he is my chore boy. You're in my prayers. By the way are you diabetic? I am and taking metformin and glipizide. ?From my research, they rob your body of B12 and so I supplement it every day. Again, God bless, you have a lot of prayers going your way and you're never alone. Love.

  8. Your activity for today is perfectly clear – a visit to the Ziemke Glass Blowing Studio!

    http://www.zglassblowing.com/about.htm

This working glass studio of artist Glenn Ziemke is between Stowe and Waterbury on Route 100. From the observation room, you can watch glassblowing in action daily except Wednesdays in the off-season. Afterward head over to the gallery for a look at the studio’s unique creations (the Hawaiian-inspired Angel Fish caught my eye!).

And don’t forget about the place suggested by Coop – The Little River Hotglass Studio & Gallery:

    http://www.littleriverhotglass.com/visit-studio.h…

Located in the Stowe hamlet of Moscow and open every day except Tuesdays, this studio lets visitors step onto the blowing floor and watch as molten glass takes shape. Back in the gallery you can select from finished pieces or ask to have one made especially for you while you watch!

While in Stowe, you may suddenly realize that you need glasses (wine glasses, that is!) – and a vase or two. Not to worry, because these two glass studios have got you covered!

  11. Mary,
Hello, I'm glad you sent a comment for us. I think it's good that they are re-cycling the old ski lift materials. I really like the fact that they are putting a sub heat tubing floor in under the first floor. It gets really cold there, so that's smart. Also what is the mechanical room and the electric feeds on slide 15?

    Terri1 on July 26, 2010 at 1:30 pm
  12. Good morning. Just checking to see if Mary posted a note to us.

After my sister left last night—–I caved in and watched Design Star. But, the highlight of the evening was that incredible moon. It looks like an August moon.

The girls (Khazzie and Simi) and I sat outside and marveled at how gorgeous it was. So of course I made up a few animal folklore stories for them—-things like the day in history when the cow jumped over the moon, and the year the black cat hitched a ride across it on a broom, as the great horned owl screeched-"what a hoot", and how Puss and Boots, to this day still dream of following suit—-and on and on—ha Obviously we had fun by the light of the moon. And obviously I can't think of anything constructive to add this morning so I'll check back later.

  13. After last week's big storm, I wonder if there's some cleanup to do at the Dream Home site? Hopefully nothing more than water and a muddy road.

A recent news article indicated that there was "an uncommonly strong storm, which shot pellets of hail and large bolts of lightening…[and] brought down a large tree Wednesday afternoon. The tree fell across Route 100, just north of Stowe village, and caused traffic in the village to come to a halt for more than an hour. Did you manage to get through, Jack, and carry on with progress at the Dream Home?

DBCoop on July 26, 2010 at 5:34 pm
  14. I hope that the storm didn't damage the camera that takes the time-lapse photos. Maybe that's one of the reasons so much time has lapsed since we got the last construction site updates.

  15. If you're planning on winning the Dream Home in Stowe, and think you'll need to find a job there to maintain a comfortable lifestyle, you might want to think about enrolling in some hi-tech courses now to improve your hiring qualifications. Many electronic and tech firms in Vermont are finding it difficult to fill job openings for highly skilled professional positions. There are simply more job openings available than qualified job applicants.

Of course, a full-time job might cut into your skiing time, but with the Dream Home right on the Spruce Peak Resort property and only steps to the slopes, a quick run before work, during lunch, or after work shouldn't be too difficult.

DBCoop on July 26, 2010 at 5:57 pm
    • Thanks for the heads up Coop. My desired Major will be in computer networking, do you think that will get me in?

Cami on July 26, 2010 at 7:40 pm
      • Are you kidding, Cami? IBM is one of the major employers in Vermont, particularly Burlington, so with a major in computer networking, you'll be a shoe-in (and have a good chance at a great job too), and probably a department head or senior VP in no time at all. Why, you might even choose to upgrade from the Dream Home in a few years for something even larger, with your indoor pool and wave pool. Just in case you need some real estate ideas, I'm going to post some potential estate home choices. Of course, that's would only be in case Jim Samples doesn't stop the Dream Home Sweepstakes computer on your name early next year. (Maybe you could offer to install a new computer networking system at the HGTV Knoxville office—BEFORE the drawing?)

        • Wow Coop, you took my dream and ran with it. I wish I had enough energy to keep up with you, but I'm lagging behind by at least 3 years, probably 4.

I'm really excited about this program they offer in my area. Digital Technology and Culture. It will require me to learn 2 new languages. I already picked out my two languages, now I just need to add time, energy, money, more money, and empty brain cells with a high retention rate. I wish I could add an external hard drive to my brain, not sure where I would store it though. Wouldn't that be great. If you wanted to forget something you could just delete it. If you were worried you might forget something, or heaven forbid, lose your mind, you could just back it up.

Not sure I have what it takes to make my educational dreams come true, but I have a strong desire, so maybe that will make up for my shortcomings.

She was a citizen activist and educator, and founded an environmental nonprofit called “Save Our World,” She was the oldest supporter of Vermont independence anywhere. CplusE on July 27, 2010 at 11:38 am
      • Hi CplusE, this is a snippet from an article I found on her love for children and the environment.Zind) Leonard had a great passion for global issues; she founded an environmental organization called Save Our World. But she didn't neglect the local ones. She was a familiar presence at select board meetings. She often collected signatures to get non-binding resolutions on the town meeting agenda.
Last year, at 99 Leonard spearheaded a project to build a greenhouse at the local elementary school to help students learn about healthy eating and sustainable agriculture.
(Haas leonard) "Frankly, she could run me into the ground on most days, I think."
(Zind) Sandy Haas represents Rochester in the legislature. Hass remembers when the Leonards moved to town in 1997 they made a real effort to get to know people.
(Haas) "My first picture is really of the two of them. They were a wonderful presence bringing their wide knowledge of the outside world. They'd traveled a lot."

    • Good morning CplusE, thank you for recognizing her. When I wake up this morning, I have the day free, I would like to do some more research and see what I can find about the matriarchs, woman of valor, and eco-focused gals in Stowe. I did find an interesting utube about a local historian, but want to go through the tape first before I present it. The other trail I want to look at is the oldest buildings. GoldieLocks got me started with that, and her post on old homes. I know some of the lodges go back to around 1920, but what about the old school buildings, log cabins now converted into educational places for the community?

Janzee on July 27, 2010 at 12:53 pm
      • Janice if you look at Coop's posting of real estate available in the area one of the homes was built in 1861. Here is the MLS#3028386. It's quite an estate!

EdinOregon on July 27, 2010 at 11:18 pm
        • Hi Eddie, this is fantastic information, and great to know that these old properties exist in Stowe. It simply adds to the history, and value of the land. There was a time in the history where folks left their farms and the land was unattended for awhile. I think that the zoning bylaws where very strict to watch development very carefully.

  24. Okay…MY BLOGGING BUDDIES… I NEED YOUR HELP!

As some of you may know, my oldest son is getting married this Saturday. Yes, it's true. Chelsea Clinton is trying to steal Michael's thunder but…oh…no…no…Michael is getting married on July 31st…which just so happens to be my Wedding Anniversary as well.

Anyway, Michael called me to ask me what song we should dance to for our Mother/Son Dance. Sweet, huh? Sooooo…any suggestions my fine HGTV creative friends may have would be greatly appreciated but I need to pick one kind of soon.

    Any thoughts?

Thanks, in advance, to my favorite blogging buddies! ;)

    Living the Dream!

P.S. Wouldn't this make a great topic for an Oprah episode/HGTV commercial as far as how we picked our Mother/Son Dance Song? LOL!

P.S.S. Thanks HGTV for letting me share my life through your blog!

  25. Good morning everybloggie,

A couple of quick questions for anybloggie who may know why electrical outlets are installed in the baseboards of houses, and not higher up on the wall, so you don't have to bend down in order to plug in vacuum cleaners, etc ? I would think they would be safer for young grandchildren too.
Also, when builders construct log homes, how do they run the wiring thru' those big logs ? I don't recall ever seeing electrical outlets in the log walls when looking at photos in magazines.
If anyone has the answers, Many thanks in advance !

GoldieLocksBear on July 27, 2010 at 5:05 am
    • Log homes definitely have outlets in the wall. The one I worked on had the wires run in a notch between the first and second layers of the logs. Wherever there was a box installed the logs were chiseled out to accept the outlet. The switches for lights etc were run up along doorframes through a trougth cut into the ends of the logs behind the door the framing. Then the wires were fed though the logs to the switch boxes. Over head wires on the exposed logs were just stapled on top of the logs and then fed down through the rafters to feed the lights. As far as wall outlets in houses, if I remember code right they are supposed to be 12" off of the floor. This height keeps them above any water hazards from cleaning floors etc. The reason they are lower, I imagine is to keep wires from hanging in the open above furniture etc. There are exceptions for outlets behind refrigerators and on counters and cabinets though.

EdinOregon on July 27, 2010 at 1:46 am
    • GoldieLocksBear, I've seen outlets in the baseboard in older homes. A lot of the times there was a "raceway" routed in the backs of the baseboard for the wiring…

  28. If there are children in your life, introduce them to the fascinating world of herpetology at the Stowe Free Library. The Vermont Institute of Natural Science will be presenting a children’s program called “Cold Blooded Critters” today which will include the opportunity to meet a wood turtle, snake, and salamander!

    http://www.stowelibrary.org/blog/2010/07/vermont-…

And after this educational experience, what better follow-up than a trip with the youngsters to the Yellow Turtle, a children’s clothing and ski wear shop on Mountain Road in Stowe:

    http://www.yellow-turtle.com/

They carry a great selection of Turtle Fur, including security blankets for babies and toddlers as well as neck gators and headbands for kids (and adults too!). There are even cute frog backpacks, raincoats, umbrellas, and rain boots guaranteed to delight the budding young herpetologist!

  49. Hello everyone. I am new to these posts. I have followed the dream homes since they started building them and they are all beautiful. This one is going to be breath taking. I just know it is… I have been wondering if the builders have considered adding in green elements such as solar and wind elements. I have solar panels on my home here in California. I have been looking into a newer Helix wind technology though. It would be interesting to see them implement it into one of the DH. Just a thought…. I read all of your comments and speculations and I must say they do keep us all guessing here. Thank you Mary , Jack and Linda for making life interesting.

  50. I think what you guys do here at HGTV is wonderful and inspiring! But the question remains…what about additonal bedrooms? I ask this question because no one really knows who will win the dream homes…maybe a retiree with no children…maybe a single parent with 2 or three children… or maybe a famly of twelve (wife, husband, and ten children: aged 9 months – 16 years old), such as our family. BACK TO REALITY, if luck would fall my way, and my family wins a dream home, I would have to sell it back and use the money left over to finance a more feasable dream of a life time. I guess with a family size as large as ours, all we have left is hope! but I wanted to tell you guys how great you are and as you give these blessings out, your company will continue to grow and be blessed.
