The Architect’s Inspiration

Hi, fans.

I know you’ve been dying to get your hands on the 2011 floor plans. That’s not going to happen this week, but what I can share is info directly from this year’s architect, Paul Robert Rousselle. During a recent chat I asked Paul about his design inspiration, and what unfolded was the most heartfelt story. Being a history buff, I have to admit that I myself had goose bumps as Paul shared the experience of sifting through old photos of Adirondack Great Camps, circa 1890s to 1920s, before sketching out ideas for house planner Jack Thomasson.

Take some time today to click through HGTVPro.com’s slideshow on Paul’s design process, then pop back here to share your thoughts.

  1. Really lovely! The whole concept brings back a time of unique style. I can't wait to see the finished home!

    • Mary –

There is a older book called "A Time to Keep" by Tasha Tudor. Everything I have seen so far on the dream home 2011 reminds me of this book. Its a beautifully illustrated story about a family celebrating holidays in "simpler" times. The entry for March talks about gathering maple syrup and the sugaring-off party. You should really take a look. I grew up dreaming about a place like what's described in this book and it truly sounds like you and HGTV are creating just that. Thank you!

    • Loved that huge old resort that was in that movie "Dirty Dacing".
The wealthy doctor and his wife take their two daughters on a summer vacation to a northern lodge before the girls start out on their own. Loved it! Great music too!

That resort was very interesting! So much to do! http://www.mountainlakehotel.com/Section_Home.asp

  2. Thanks Mary for letting us know we are not getting the floor plans this week. I have been through that whole site several times over because it gives such insight into what is taking place and what we can expect from the finish product. Nothing less than grandiose and lavish. Going to the Stowe site and guessing about the floor plans is fun for me in itself because it allows me to kind of guess and dream about what Jack, Linda and the architects are putting together. I don't know if its on a cabin level or homesite level but what ever level it is will no doubt be amazing. I'm sure this will be an "anniversary edition" of all the dream homes combined.

  3. We love his inspiration and I most definitely love the "rendering" on page 8.

Having a link to the floor plan was definitely a teaser. I'm starting to think these aren't accidents, just well placed/timed teasers.

    Hmmmmm.

zipdedoda on July 27, 2010 at 6:50 pm
    • I think you're on to them!

    • A link to the floor plan…? I must have missed something. I am going to venture to say that we might be getting it next week…I could be way off, but I am just guessing in Mary's wording.

Our Army Family on July 27, 2010 at 9:07 pm
      • You didn't miss anything. It was a link that brought you to a blank page. Eventually, after a day long tease, they changed the wording of the link to the "time lapse photos". Then around 1:44 this afternoon, they put up this blog, telling us that the floor plans are not this week.

    • What brought this on? The eight pictures in the series? It reminds me of the movie "Ghosts" when Patrick Swayze keeps singing it to Whoopie Goldberg until she agrees to help him. Maybe we can use it on Mary to the same effect.:)

AnneEliseSouth on July 28, 2010 at 2:31 am
      • That is such a great scene, thanks for bringing back that memory. LOL (now I have to watch the movie again, THANKS!)

"Second verse same as the first" was my subtle & funny way of saying – HGTV is repeating themselves. 7 of the eight pics were posted on the pro site and discussed for awhile…
(albeit, the rendering is new and appreciated.)

  6. Thanks kid Mary, we got the sense of your love of history and it was intertwined in all the clues. This is what we have been yearning for. A place doesn't just spring up from out of nowhere. In a town like Stowe, the roots, found in the history of the community, it's beginnings, education, architectural inspirations, and full fledged ardent activism of the people that lived/live here have carved this village from the grass roots beginnings to what it is today. I have never seen a tree house lodge like the one in the first slide and my sense is that we are in for some exciting surprises.

The cute little laughing frogs reminds me of how we girls, maybe the guys too, except a deeper throaty gribitgribitt sound would be giggling on the blog when we get together for a celebration. I know you are giggling too alice dear, and soney is smilin.

  8. Well Mary we were hoping the link would work this week! Now we find the link is back to the old photos! Gosh can we at least expect some new PHOTOS its been almost 30 days! We already found the 'slide show' on the design process.

It looks beautiful and the hints at maple flooring and slate make me drool. The wide decks that are hinted at in the renderings would suit me to a tee! To me this combines a log cabin and family lake house in one.

I think this is a first we are already w(H)ineing on page 1!

OmahaLady on July 27, 2010 at 3:43 pm
  9. Hi Mary, thanks for letting us know the floor plans aren't coming our way any time soon……we are an impatient bunch! This is a great group on the Dream Home blog, they are very inventive when it comes to keeping us entertained!

We'll look forward to hearing from you soon.

CeeJoy on July 27, 2010 at 8:52 pm
  10. Ohh, we are supposed to share our thoughts. First off, I wish Mr. Rousselle had his own website. I would just like to get to know the designer better, and see his previous work. My favorite pics are 1 the tree house, and the last pic, although I am sure that rendition won't do the finished product justice.

The whole tree house idea, fills my mind with visions of Swiss Family Robinson, and that is where my imagination takes off. I have always wanted my own Swiss Family Robinson tree house home. In the tropics of course, but having it amongst a snowy playground might be fun too.

Cami on July 27, 2010 at 8:55 pm
    • Hey Disney producers, may I have your attention. Maybe a family could be stranded at a deserted ski resort for an entire winter. That could be a fun Swiss Family Robinson Adventure. So many treasures, and adventures could be found there to keep the family and story going. Christmas would be their best Christmas ever. And the great feel good message here would be that families can survive anything as long as they stay and work together. In the end they decide to stay and get the place up and running again. Lemons to lemonade story. As far as I know that story has never been done before.

How many of my ideas do I keep giving for free. LOL. Maybe Janzee can take this one and run with it. Or maybe Stowe Mountain Resort should buy the rights to this story, before it's stolen for free. ; )

I'm from Virginia myself, but I've passed the location of the Dream Home many a time to go for walks on Mt. Mansfield so this is especially exciting this year!

Janzee on July 28, 2010 at 2:05 am

Our Army Family on July 27, 2010 at 9:01 pm
    • I'll bet there is a lot of fantastical inspiration at Disney World for a tree house. Maybe HGTV should send Mr. Rousselle there for some more inspiration.

  13. Thank you Mary for the new blog. I loved the photos that he used for inspiration…can't wait to see what he came up with from them. When you say not this week it gives me a glimmer of hope that is may be next week…???…maybe, maybe?

So, if we can't have a floor plan can we maybe have some new time lapse photos? (Although I am guessing that we haven't gotten any because they will give away too much of the floor plan.)

Thanks again. We always love to hear something new from you.

  14. So MARY, just curious if the Green Home blog has been officially abandoned or just slowed w-a-y down as it is the off season? It just seems like it is more slowed down than last year…although I am hoping that means you are off enjoying as much of the summer as you can.

  16. Being a West Coaster, the idea of celebrating the heritage of resort architecture takes me to places like the grand Victorian styled Hotel del Coronado, built in 1888, and one of the few remaining wooden resort structures of its day. Not a ski resort, naturally, but a beach resort of imposing stature and fine detail that reflects a golden age—one that visitors and guests can still admire and enjoy today. Even living in San Diego, I have spent holidays there, and it continues to evoke a sense of timeless elegance and old world charm.

So much for my own recollections of the lodge concept. However, those experiences allow me to connect with Mr. Rousselle's historical journey to another era—and to the architectural treasures that inspired him in his sketches of Dream Home 2011. A most pleasant step back in time, with decidedly modern overtones.

    • Coop: Just looked at the Hotel del Coronado. I thought I saw you at the Sunset Bar or the wine room, but both times you had your back to the camera. Of course it is haunted. It will haunt my dreams until I can visit, or even fly farther west.

Katydiddle on July 28, 2010 at 11:57 pm
      • Yes, at the Sunset Bar, the Babcock & Story Bar (called by some the best bar in San Diego), and the newer 1500 Ocean Restaurant (formerly the Prince Of Wales Grill for many years prior to 2006) are perfect spots to see and be seen, or not! One's back to the camera might be preferable, and the waitstaff are very discreet about the names of past visitors.

Hauntingly beautiful, rich in history, and a visual delight at every turn…with its original gilded birdcage elevator staffed by a uniformed operator, AND authentic, sometimes creaky, and yes, even at times a bit slanted floorboards are only part of the charm to be found at The Del. You may even tell them Coop sent you, but they won't bat an eye. All part of Coronado's mystery.

DBCoop on July 28, 2010 at 11:48 pm

    • If the idea of celebrating the holidays at an extraordinary turn-of-the-century beach resort appeals, try visiting The Del around Christmas time. It is absolutely spectacular, and a must see for children and adults alike. "A massive 30-foot pine stands on the resort's Windsor Lawn, while the main foyer is graced by a 25-foot tree, whose sturdy branches, strung with some 15,000 lights, cradle a profusion of ornaments. Elsewhere, almost every inch of the resort is draped in evergreen garlands, trimmed with crimson ribbon, and interwoven with strands of lights."

A true Victorian Christmas experience. http://www.coastalliving.com/travel/lodging-dining/coron...

If wishing and dreaming could make it happen, one of us dreamy bloggers would win for sure. After all, if you don't have a dream, how can it come true?
You've gotta start somewhere, and this is a good place to let the dreams begin. Blogging about it helps to give the dream some substance, and dreaming is good for the imagination and the soul.

  18. As for the floor plans—since patience is a virtue, and as MARY knows, remarkably virtuous we are on the Dream Home blog, all will soon be revealed.

For the time being, we have a new blog thread to fill out, a delightful sketch of the home to admire from the architect, interesting historical background to discover, and all is once again well with the world in HGTV-land.

    How Sweet It Is!

DBCoop on July 27, 2010 at 9:35 pm
    • DBCoop, I agree the the sketches from Paul Robert Rousselle are delightful and I can't wait for more info and the floor plans. It looks like the great room and garage will be on the second floor. It looks like a deck in between the greatroom and another section of the house behind the garage. I wonder if the bedrooms will be downstairs with radiant heat. I would love toasty feet in the morning. I love the idea of a tree house! I just know Linda Woodrum has already found the majority of the furnishings.

The best celebration today was reading you all and your thoughts, and just knowing that I am part of something I really believe in. I did do some research today, through the Stowe Historical Society- a very small group involving men woman, who have passed down a tremendous oral history since before WWII. I am editing through the information and will post it tomorrow. Stowe Historical Society has observed the survival of farms, restorations of school buildings, the establishment of the 6 mile bike trail leading up to the base of Mt. Mansfield ( one of Bush's 1,000 pts. of light in the 70's,) and so much more.

  22. It seems like we're going to have a camp style home in the trees with gorgeous views. Mary, you give us just enough pics and sketches to tantalize us. Thank you.

  23. Did anyone notice that in the Lake Placid Club water structure all the chairs are facing away from the lake? Hmmm.

Katydiddle on July 28, 2010 at 12:06 am
    • I have a couple of theories about that, Katydiddle. First, they are faced to watch a presentation by MARY's predecessor of some early era Dream Home floor plans…OR, second, they are turned to catch the sun, and views of the couples strolling along the shorefront in front of the resort. After all, gossiping about fellow guests has always been fashionable, and a pleasant way to pass a relaxing afternoon.

As to which theory is most credible, I'll leave that up to you.

    • Could they have been sweeping the floors or remodeling?

Janzee on July 28, 2010 at 2:18 am
    • How about this one? Back in the era when the Lake Placid Lodge was built, people were very modest. So it was considered impolite to watch the other people swimming, as you may get a glimpse of ankle or knee. heaven forbid, you might get struck blind for looking.
Ah, the good old days, today the bare neccessities are barely covered, and bathing suits are barely there at all in some cases.
That's my version of the story, and I'm sticking to it.

  25. I see no 3-story buildings. :( :(
The garage seems to have an upper floor, but with no basement there……
that section must only be 2-story.
    It still looks amazing!

RJMstone on July 28, 2010 at 12:20 am
    • RJM: I watched the time lapse pics again and was sure I saw a structure (room?) under the garage. I have no idea how they could make the floor strong enough to support vehicles. Putting the time lapse photos together with the architect Rousselle's renderings, I think this DH is going to be much larger and have more interesting features than I imagined before.
Any ideas, bloggers, on the garage, 2 or 3 story plan?

Katydiddle on July 28, 2010 at 1:42 am
      • I believe it to be "3" story. The garage has no space under it (pic 44 shows the structure that has basement space. Pic 50 shows the foundation for the garage. Pic 53 shows the fill for the garage, and 56 shows it with the poured concrete floor). Because the land slopes, the basement will only be visible to the rear where it will most likely be a walk out. The main floor has the vaulted great room with space over the garage as the third floor. The roofline behind the garage…can't even begin to guess if it has a floor above the main floor (although I doubt it).

zipdedoda on July 28, 2010 at 1:52 am
        • zip: Thanks for explaining the garage situation. Then you lost me. Agree the great room has a vaulted ceiling. Space over the garage as a third floor? Oh hon, I'm too tired. Maybe tomorrow. Pleasant dreams.

Katydiddle on July 28, 2010 at 2:13 am
          • No problem, long day.
To use terms loosely for counting purposes only
            1floor – basement
            2nd floor – main floor
3rd fl – floor above garage

There are actually at least 4 ridgelines
            1st – over the great-room / has a basement
            2nd – area between the great-room and garage / has a basement
3rd – garage area (with a possible room over the garage) / no basement
4th – behind the garage (at a slight angle). Has a basement

Hope this clears it up for you :)

          • Is there also a structure right by the driveway when they drive into the dream home site? Behind the shady trees?

RJMstone on July 29, 2010 at 5:14 am
          • Or is it a tall natural rock formation. Would be great if it had carved steps going up it. LOL
I know there are alot of trees, but if you zoom into ALL THE PICTURES available for inspection on here…………….. you would be amazed at what you can see.
(try 400% zoom for instance) wink

          • Is the structure you're seeing the old 1960's ski-lodge house that was from the original owner? That has already been torn down during the construction. Here's a slide with a better view, before they removed it: http://www.hgtvpro.com/hpro/photo_template/articl

theshecreature on July 29, 2010 at 4:28 pm
          • No, not the old lodge with the white chimney. (is there a name for those white chimneys?)

To the right of that old building. In the "foundation" photos, its behind the red dumpster by the trees.

Check out Foundation picture #12 (and #16) http://www.hgtvpro.com/hpro/photo_template/articl

RJMstone on July 29, 2010 at 11:59 am
          • Well, picture 12 is of the opposite angle, but I looked at pictures #11 and #16, even bringing 16 into Photoshop to enlarge and brighten up the levels. I'm sorry to tell you that the only things to the right of the old lodge were that red dumpster, one of those yellow backhoe excavators, and lots and lots of trees. But just maybe you're seeing into the future and there will be something there when it's all done!

theshecreature on July 29, 2010 at 5:47 pm
          • Seems to be something blocking light behind the trees in photo #12. Not too wide. That's why I thought of a rock formation! The tree limbs are deceptive, but still something could be there! :)

I made my computer screen "lighter" in order to get a clearer view! :) :)

RJMstone on July 29, 2010 at 6:25 pm
          • There's also a little contractor's trailer over in that area, as seen in this angle. Maybe that's it? http://www.hgtvpro.com/hpro/photo_template/articl

theshecreature on July 29, 2010 at 6:36 pm
          • No…. much more over to the right! At least another width of that red box you show.

RJMstone on July 29, 2010 at 7:22 pm
          • Here are the the slides that I enlarged and lightened up.

If you're looking at slide 16, it does sort of look like a look-out tower or treehouse "might" be there in the trees… http://i26.tinypic.com/23h13jr.jpg

However, if you look closely at slide 11, it just looks like a clump of trees only… http://i29.tinypic.com/28k4hec.jpg

Keep in mind, the resolution quality on all of the original posted photos is as low as they could get away with and not completely lose all detail (only 28 pixels/inch).

theshecreature on July 29, 2010 at 7:07 pm
          • Much farther over to the right. Check out #12 again.

RJMstone on July 29, 2010 at 7:23 pm
          • As I said before, #12 is taken from the opposite side of the house. The camera person is standing near that pointy corner, with the old lodge to their back, looking in the other direction (down the road). Those workers are actually snapping lines on the back side of the garage foundation wall. So actually, whatever that dark mass is in slide #12, it's on the property to the right of the DH (when facing the street). I believe it might be the other, much larger house (or lodge) on that little road. When you look at Google maps of Ski Club Lane, you can see that it looks quite large, especially compared to the old, little ski lodge.

theshecreature on July 29, 2010 at 2:45 pm
          • Maybe this link will work: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&am

theshecreature on July 29, 2010 at 7:52 pm
          • Sadly, enlarging and lighting up slide #12 doesn't resolve anything, as seen here: http://i30.tinypic.com/4sxh5i.jpg

So either that's a dense clump of trees or a 3+ story structure.

theshecreature on July 29, 2010 at 8:23 pm
          • So right! Area on #12 must be a SECOND structure or rock formation then. See how it blocks the light of the sky. What is it?

RJMstone on July 29, 2010 at 8:14 pm
          • When you read the town documents for the approval of incorporating Ski Club Lane into part of Spruce Peak, it stated that there were 2 residences on that little road (as seen in the satellite view on Google Maps). Doubtful that it's a rock formation, because anything that large could be seen between the two Ski Club Lane structures via the satellite image as well as from the street-level on Mountain Road.

I don't know if you've done this already, but for fun, you can actually take a virtual "drive" along Mountain Road via the street level option on Google Maps and look up right where the properties on Ski Club Lane face Mountain Road. I've already done it and nothing can be seen up there except trees and more trees. In a slight clearing of the trees, however, you can catch a glimpse of the larger structure that's on Ski Club Lane and it looks fairly tall.

theshecreature on July 29, 2010 at 8:40 pm
          • How old is the Goggle Map program?

Could they have lengthened Ski Club Lane since these Goggle pictures were taken?

Wonder if the Dream Home is higher up the lane.

Does anyone have 3-D Goggle? Would be nice to see all the rock outcroppings around Spruce Peak. Does the County keep records like this I wonder?

RJMstone on July 29, 2010 at 10:09 pm
          • No, they could not have lengthened Ski Club Lane since the satellite photo was taken, because the old ski lodge that they just dismantled was actually at the very end of the lane.

I have the 3D Google function on my computer. The detail on elevations isn't as good as I'd like it to be, but you can get a little sense of the scale of the mountains around the resort. You can't get down to street level, however.

theshecreature on July 29, 2010 at 10:39 pm
          • NO sky light shing thru the trees at that area to the right of the red dumpster in photo #16. Or above!! Part of the mountain?
Would like to see higher up in that area. A higher elevation right in back of the dream home? …………… well, I mean in the area of the time-lapse camera! COOL!
            http://www.hgtvpro.com/hpro/photo_template/articl

RJMstone on July 29, 2010 at 8:26 pm
          • Yes, the house does appear to face a rising elevation (where the time-lapse camera is) and that can sort of be seen here in slide #8 of "Building a Foundation": http://www.hgtvpro.com/hpro/photo_template/articl

Looks like it gradually increases in that photo and is densely forested with trees (as seen in the Google Maps satellite view), which also could explain why no light is coming through.

    • Sounds like a great time was had by all. Welcome home, welcome back to the blog, and welcome to our latest blog thread.

What wonderful places you were able to visit. So many memories. I can't help saying that I'm most envious of your visit to Lake Como…absolutely one my favorite dream sites in Europe. I could live at il Lago di Como forever, and in any one of the quaint villages that border it. My stay was years ago in a villa in Torno, and it was magical—scenery, food, the people, and the weather. Well, back to YOUR trip.

Yes, so much reading to do, so many stories to tell us about your trip, and soon, we'll have floor plans to entertain us for many days. It was kind of MARY to wait until your return to consider posting them.

DBCoop on July 28, 2010 at 3:12 am
      • Many years ago, I had a friend that talked about Lake Como with the romance that you describe. Eating a loaf of bread, he said, and drinking good wine, was not fattening because of the love of the way it was made. Jim said he could walk along the cobblestone streets and take pictures day and night. I have one of his pictures that hangs on my wall of two children holding hands. Tell me Coop, what was one thing that was magical about it?

Janzee on July 28, 2010 at 6:49 am
        • Janzee, as you've asked, I'll pass on my thoughts about Lake Como (still powerfully evocative for me and only slightly faded with the passing of time)…but it is to reneelovesgreen that goes our request for more stories about her recent European adventures. We're ready whenever you are, reneelovesgreen. And so for me, the magic of Lake Como?

DBCoop on July 28, 2010 at 9:13 pm
          • Though my trip was years ago, I have many great memories of my stay at Lake Como. Among them is waking in the early morning, opening the first floor bedroom windows (our second floor) to a spectacular view across the lake, and listening to the waves gently lapping at the shoreline. Soon the delicious smells of breakfast cooking in the kitchen below and wafting through the open windows would stir me awake once again. Each meal taken at the Villa was magical—the cuisine was beyond belief, the views divine with the sun sparkling along the waterfront and warming the fresh morning air, the sounds of lively Italian greetings being politely exchanged between the waitstaff and guests. Taking a stroll through the narrow, winding cobblestone streets of the villages, passing under centuries old arches and down time-worn steps to where a few small fishing boats still lay tied to the old stone docks. Sitting on the stone wall to admire the always remarkable views of the lake, the quiet of the tiny cobbled plaza, and the occasional passing resident returning home from the shops. Life as it was a century ago.

Sounds like it was hard to leave there.
Makes me want to go there.
But times and people over have changed some. BUT I HOPE NOT!

Maybe you can still return there and renew those calming memories Coop.

          • There is one tear of longing when I hear your exquisite story. I will hold a place in my dreams until I can visit and create my own memories. The beauty of Lake Como is one that I will read now and again as only you DBCoop have described. Thank you for this as my birthday days and wishes are recorded in my journal for another year.

Janzee on July 29, 2010 at 8:48 am
          • Once again, or perhaps as always, I am swept away by your descriptions. I find myself thinking about these novelesque stories that you tell and asking for more. The bed and breakfast is a way of life in Europe, where time was created o please the observer. Do you have anything on the shelves I can devor? I dont mean cream pies, I mean books that you have written professor.

Janzee on July 30, 2010 at 3:31 am
          • Now stepping courageously into more modern times, behind the wheel, I recall driving the curving and sometimes precipitous mountain road above the villages dotting the lake as young Italians zipped by at ferocious speed. Strolling about the colorful and well-manicured grounds of the Villa d'Este, a luxurious estate dating from 1568 and now a world-class hotel. Enjoying a rather leisurely cruise on the boats that ferry passengers from village to village. Stopping for an afternoon lunch at one of Lake Como's more famous and picturesque tourist spots, the perfectly charming town of Bellagio with its profusion of floral colors; balconies laden with endless pots of red and pink geraniums filling every window, bougainvillea spilling down walls and wrapping arcades in brilliant display, and heaven-scented rose gardens ablaze with color. Ah yes, for me, il lago di Como is a most enchanting spot, a dreamy place where I could easily spend more than one lifetime. How quickly the days pass when there is so much beauty to enjoy, so many wonderful sights to see, and so few Dream Homes to hope of winning as the years go by. Never-the-less, pour moi, c'est toujours la vie en rose!

DBCoop on July 28, 2010 at 9:16 pm

RJMstone on July 29, 2010 at 2:31 am
          • Like the world over, folks in the smaller towns and villages are usually very friendly, even if you only get across a few words of passable Italian. A smile and a greeting go a long way.

As for the short comment in French, if you translate literally, it comes out to "life through rose-colored glasses." In English, it takes on a somewhat negative connotation, or at least an overly-naive way of looking at life. For the French and the Italians, and southern European cultures in general, it's a much more positive comment, something like "living the good life" or "living and looking on the bright side of things." I've always been more attracted to the idea of living life as "la vie en rose."
All work and no play? Not my style!

I wish that we could project the scenes we'd individually conjure up of Lake Como. Line the images up gallery style, and compare the diffferent pictures we'd each produced. I'm sure, no two pictures would be alike, although each would beautiful in it's own way.

  29. . First, the sketches on slides 6 and 7 must be hung somewhere in the home. They are greatsketches. Of course there wast his great three story grand Lodge – too big. I also see a possible second story or loft above the garage. This room has three or four bunkbeds for the grandkids with a great bathroom. A small closet is included for the heavy coats and boots. Also a dresser with eight drawers for immediate needs. The rest of the house is mainly on the middle floor/lmain floor with three bedrooms and three bathrooms with ensuites included. Below the kitchen is a huge family room with a large TV, pool table, and an area for smaller ones to play. I think I see a wooden bar but it is pretty dark down there. Oh I see an outside area that is covered by the house where all the snow stuff is kept: The kitchen is a very nice one with all the amenities we would want. The dining table is made to open up to sit everyone at one time, just beautiful. A livingroom with couches facing the grand fireplace. Oh how lovely. The wraparound porch which was great in one slide has been removed I don't know why. The windows are to die for.

SandyLA on July 28, 2010 at 2:30 am
  30. It sure looks like this home will be a classic. I love the way they bumped out the window near the fireplace, and the architectural detail of the supports below it.
The styling of the home's exterior is welcoming, and reminescent of lodges/camps found all around lakes in New England built from 1920 to 1940. The use of flagstone, eaved roofline, and natural wood siding are classic touches, and so appealing.
In the New England lodges I have visited, there is usually a walkway around the top level looking down onto the great room with rustic wood railings. I wonder if the room above the garage will have one, along with the accompanying rustic staircase.
These drawings are a welcome invitation to let the dreaming begin. Until I see the real version, I will create in my imagination, countless imaginary versions, and enjoy one of them.
Set my Adirondac chair on the covered deck facing the mountainside, and wake me up when the real dream gets here!

AnneEliseSouth on July 28, 2010 at 3:12 am
    • You may end up with plenty of dreamers out on that deck as each blogger sets up their own Adirondac chair to take in the views, from now until winter sets in, when we're sent inside to warm ourselves before the open hearth.

The great thing about dreams is that you always have total peace and solitude, no matter the number of folks sharing the fantasy!

DBCoop on July 28, 2010 at 3:42 am
      • There's always room on the porch for another chair, after all this is still a "dream" home, and dreams are never ending, and as big as they need to be. Just think of it as in the movie "Inception"
the deck/porch will just elongate as needed, and there's plenty of room in front of the hearth. All dreamers are welcome dream up a chair, and put another log on the fire, this is gonna be a good ride!

AnneEliseSouth on July 28, 2010 at 3:59 am
        • Ohhhh, I am so there.

I call dibs on a lounge chair!

zipdedoda on July 28, 2010 at 2:24 pm
      • My (quite detailed & romaticized) dreams about New England have, unfortunately, never included Adirondac chairs! While fun to look at, I find them exceedingly uncomfortable – and I have never been able to extricate myself from one unaided (and I am still a "spring chicken"!). But Adirondac furniture aside, the shingle and lodge styles of architecture are definitely something worthy of a DH! And the location couldn't be more perfect, because, after all, what makes a dream home a dream home but a little romance, right? New England conjures up the best of all romantic notions – curling up by the fireside, daydreaming while the snow falls, Bob Newhart – wait, delete that last part! :x Anyway, you've hit the nail on the head speaking about dreamers, particularly so with this years DH!

HerbalT on July 30, 2010 at 5:27 pm
        • I am still a Spring Chicken too. I am not going to tell you which year in Spring though! I remember when it was easy to extricate myself from Adirondac Chairs, now I prefer a rocking chair for easy extrication! ^_^

EdinOregon on July 30, 2010 at 4:12 pm
          • I'm more of a big wicker porch swing (with many, many cushions) kinda gal myself, but a nice comfy rocker will do in a pinch! I think for those of us with little or no padding in the nether regions, those Adirondac (and most hardback chairs) are pretty to look at, but we'll arm wrestle you for the squishy over-stuffed chairs….

HerbalT on July 31, 2010 at 10:18 pm
          • Hi, Ed. I'm with you on that one. I have one chair that goes with me as I don't care for sitting in deep cushions and 'baskets',I like sitting up straight on firm seating. Much easier in and out! :) :)

JWmson on August 1, 2010 at 1:01 pm
    • The Adirondac is out, but a nice comphy chair, one I don't have to slide out, get on all fours, and then try to stand up. The rest of you dreamers would be laughing so hard, you would fall out of your chairs. I can just see it now. All of us conjolling on the deck…

  35. Hi everybloggie,

I get the distinct feeling that Paul Robert Rouselle is artistically very talented, his conceptual drawings have the flowing lines and movement of Pablo Piccasso's sketches. I like Mr. Rouselle's architectural designs because not only are they beautiful, but they make sense. I can only imagine the captivating magnificence of those mountain vistas as Mother Nature blends into the building. I'm eager to see Linda Woodrum's subdued, natural color palette and fabrics and also the " ooh and "aah" elements of her kitchen design ~ The heart of the home.
Dreamin' my HGTV Morning Mantra :O)

GoldieLocksBear on July 28, 2010 at 4:02 am
  36. Post Scriptum.
Oops, I meant to add : If you look at Picasso's sketches, particularly; The Owl, The Camel, The Butterfly and The Dove of Peace, you'll see the flowing line of his work :O)
I love art and history, and nature. Concrete and steel and sharp lines are not to my taste.

GoldieLocksBear on July 28, 2010 at 4:29 am
    • Oooh, maybe you just haven't found an architect that does it for you. (possibly, no one knew how to use a support beam LOL).

Maybe you could start big and work you way backwards. I was pulled into architecture when studying the large cathedrals. I was amazed by all the structural detail.

    • Yes.

On close inspection, it seems to match the foundation pics.

zipdedoda on July 28, 2010 at 2:12 pm
      • It is so hard to judge the size of the home by that drawing.
The people doors and garage doors look so small.
In comparison, the fireplace looks so huge!

Hope this outdoorsy "guy" has an enclosed big deck out back. Would be a great entertainment investment.

What I've seen so far on here and on the HGTVPro site is so compelling. I can't wait to see the floor plans and architects renderings. I'm sure it will be grand.

This pet-friendly Bed and Breakfast in the traditional Vermont Country Style also features an Art Studio and Gallery. The 145-year-old farmhouse is in the hamlet of Moscow. It has stunning mountain views and 5-minute access to Stowe Village. There is even a Tea Garden serving afternoon tea Thursdays to Sundays!

The gardens, good food, and especially the whimsical artwork of owner Liz Le Serviget add to the unique charm of this B & B. Art can be commissioned as well, whether as a wall mural, decorated furniture piece, or a painting on canvas. A night’s stay here will truly be one of a kind, sure to amuse and delight!

How is your horse that you take special care of? Soney and I are doing fine. I am glad the house didn't start falling apart until Soney got better! Let us know how things are going. Talk to you soon.

alicesoneysmom on July 28, 2010 at 5:06 pm
      • Hi Alice! Diamond's recovery is complicated since she now has kidney issues. We just started two weeks ago trying to get her kidney values back to normal. She went in for a recheck yesterday, and while some values are better the most important one is higher, so they increased her medication. We go back in another two weeks and hopefully things will improve. Luckily we caught this early so we have some time to work on treatment options. My husband seems to be recovering on stronger antibiotics and rest, and my old horse is pretty much back to normal. I'm so glad Soney is well and your house did not fall down around you before you got to work on it! Take care!

  42. I have been away on vacation and I come back to SKETCHES!!! What a wonderful background to the inspiration for "our treehouse" I know Mary said no floorplans this week, but they HAVE to be coming, especially since we now have a vision of the outside and teasers for the inside. This Dream Home will definitley be a contrast in colors to 2010 but continuing the journey of traditions. I am thinking a ski-in gazebo would work nicely, linked to the main house through covered porches.

dumplingjenn on July 28, 2010 at 12:20 pm
    • I like the idea of that, or something similar. I've seen homes before, near ski resorts, that put a twist on the whole mud room thing. There was a wall with pegs to vertically hand the skis. They also had a bench for removing the boots and storing them. Lets not forget all of those wet gloves, socks and hats. Some sort of peg drying system to set them upon.

OOOOh, as long as we ARE making this a dream home, could we put some sort of forced air drying system – to help speed along the drying process. I know my dryer gets hijacked during snow season. It would be great if there was an alternate drying system….mmmmmm…to dream…

It truly is fun spending someone else's money. :)

Now everyone don't start brow beating me, yes I got a foreign car, a Hyundai Sonata; I went to the American car dealers first, but didn't see anything in my budget that I liked (I can't afford a Vette or Caddy); after looking for 2 days, I kept coming back to the Sonata & finally bought it ! I love my new car, it's silvery light blue, has extra safety features, all the bells & whistles !! I tried to buy American, but couldn't.

      • Me Too!! Hubby has a truck that is all tricked out with fancy 'flames' paint job; 21" tires & mags (which makes driving it not a pleasure) ; a real eyecatcher, I'm always afraid I'll park where someone might open their car door & scratch the paint ! Also it's an '07 & only has 8,000 miles on it, very low mileage & the Lord only knows why he wants it to stay with such low miles, he says it will be worth more if he decides to sell it !! Men !!!!

gremol on July 29, 2010 at 3:22 pm
  45. I just got another one of my whacky ideas. Picture this. Since the home is multi level, what if a mini gondola was installed between the floors of the home to shuttle dishes, clean clothes, etc. in between the different levels of the house. Little red gondolas on a rail system. Wouldn't kids of every age just love that? It Would save Mom's back too! It would be kind of like Mr. Rogers trolley, or a Dumb Waiter Stow style.

When I take a deep breath I can imagine myself there, playing my own version of musical chairs to find my favorite porch spot and view! Oh, and coffee!
