The Architect’s Inspiration

Hi, fans.

I know you’ve been dying to get your hands on the 2011 floor plans. That’s not going to happen this week, but what I can share is info directly from this year’s architect, Paul Robert Rousselle. During a recent chat I asked Paul about his design inspiration, and what unfolded was the most heartfelt story. Being a history buff, I have to admit that I myself had goose bumps as Paul shared the experience of sifting through old photos of Adirondack Great Camps, circa 1890s to 1920s, before sketching out ideas for house planner Jack Thomasson.

Take some time today to click through HGTVPro.com’s slideshow on Paul’s design process, then pop back here to share your thoughts.

  1. So Beautiful!! Thanks Mary!! What a beautiful place, I would love to just get out of Illinois, and go somewhere where the sky is always blue. You say dream home and to me it is really only a DREAM, only to open my eyes and wake up to realize that I am still in my small ranch rental. But it's wonderful to have HGTV that helps you dream, and lets you imagine that you do have one of the wonderful dream homes that has been giving away for some many years now. I'm 35 and still have many more years to dream, but with faith and prayers one day I do BELIVE my dreams will come true, and I will be living somewhere where the sky is ALWAYS blue, while I sit on my patio and enjoy the view. Thanks Mary for helping me DREAM!! I will be on this journey to see and enjoy!!

    • Having lived in New England for many years, it is my observation that the bluest skies occur when the weather is coldest, the colder the day, the bluer the skies, the blue color just pops when set against the white landscape.
Mother Nature seems to reward us for putting up with the challenges of the cold temps. The beauty of winter in New England is unsurpassed, but it comes with a price, as I guess, does everything in life.

  2. You know this is August. That means it is not that long until the snow starts flying at Stowe. There has got to be a lot more done than they are showing. I wish we could see it.

    • The evenings are getting cooler and the leaves on the trees are already starting to show a peep of their autumn colors :O) Leaf peeping season in the mountains should be at it's peak sometime around October 7th, give or take a few :O)

  3. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
    Ev'rywhere you go;
Take a look in the five and ten glistening once again
With candy canes and silver lanes aglow.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
    Toys in ev'ry store
But the prettiest sight to see is the holly that will be
    On your own front door.

A pair of hopalong boots and a pistol that shoots
    Is the wish of Barney and Ben;
Dolls that will talk and will go for a walk
    Is the hope of Janice and Jen;
And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
    Ev'rywhere you go;
There's a tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the park as well,
The sturdy kind that doesn't mind the snow.
    It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas;
    Soon the bells will start,
And the thing that will make them ring is the carol that you sing
    Right within your heart.

funfordot on August 4, 2010 at 12:39 am
  4. Can't wait for the snows. I love snow. I love Christmas. I want to be there. I just don't know about the HOA fees and property taxes and all that. But when I win I will see what I can do.

    • The Builder may buy it back from the winner. Heard on here that that happens sometimes when the winner doesn't want the dream home he just won. I wonder if the home would still be worth the same or more if you kept it for a year and then decided to sell it in tip top shape.

  5. Dashing through the snow
    In a one-horse open sleigh
    Through the fields we go
    Laughing all the way.
    Bells on bob-tail ring
    Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
    A sleighing song tonight.

    Chorus:
    Jingle bells, jingle bells
    Jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride
    In a one-horse open sleigh, O
    Jingle bells, jingle bells
    Jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride
    In a one-horse open sleigh.
    A day or two ago
    I thought I'd take a ride
    And soon Miss Fanny Bright
    Was seated by my side;
The horse was lean and lank
    Misfortune seemed his lot,
We ran into a drifted bank
    And there we got upsot.
    A day or two ago
    The story I must tell
I went out on the snow
    And on my back I fell;

  6. A gent was riding by
    In a one-horse open sleigh
    He laughed at me as
    I there sprawling laid
    But quickly drove away.
    Now the ground is white,
    Go it while you're young,
    Take the girls along
    And sing this sleighing song.
    Just bet a bob-tailed bay,
    Two-forty as his speed,
Hitch him to an open sleigh and crack!
    You'll take the lead.

funfordot on August 4, 2010 at 12:42 am
  7. Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,
In the lane, snow is glistening
    A beautiful sight,
    We're happy tonight.
    Walking in a winter wonderland.

    Gone away is the bluebird,
Here to stay is a new bird
    He sings a love song,
    As we go along,
    Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,
Then pretend that he is Parson Brown

    He'll say: Are you married?
    We'll say: No man,
But you can do the job
    When you're in town.

    Later on, we'll conspire,
As we dream by the fire
    To face unafraid,
    The plans that we've made,
    Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,
And pretend that he's a circus clown
We'll have lots of fun with mister snowman,
Until the other kids knock him down.

When it snows, ain't it thrilling,
Though your nose gets a chilling
We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,
    Walking in a winter wonderland.

joplays on August 3, 2010 at 9:45 pm
    • I agree with you 100 %

BluSky on August 4, 2010 at 3:07 am
    • I am not disagreeing with you, I am just sharing my thoughts on the matter……….I will never agree with terrorist actions.

On the surface it seems wrong to build a mosque there.

I hear what you're saying about not wanting to be disrespectful to the WTC victims families, and I don't know all the particulars of why they are wanting to build a mosque there. I just know in looking back at WWII and the many lives that were lost there including Nagasaki and Hiroshima. We have come to accept past wrongs and move on. The Germans have also found a way to move on from their horrible past and what part they played in it.

Not every individual can move on or is willing to let go and let love fill their empty coldness, but as a Nation we still have religious freedom, so I embrace that freedom that we still have.

I know there are good Islams, and evil misguided ones. I feel for the good Islams who feel persecuted because of the actions of extreme terrorists.

And you are right Islamic doesn't mean terrorists. I believe there are good and bad in every religion, some we are aware of and some we aren't aware of.

  23. Did anyone else see HGTV's main website has posted a section in the upper right corner on "Halloween Ideas"? Seems way too early to me, but I guess there are a couple of people out there who might like to plan well in advance! (I did notice a few of my mail order catalogs already have Halloween stuff available — I sure wish they would wait a little longer!)

When I got home my stuffed Holloween Teddy Bear was ripped to shreds. He must have grabbed it when I wasn't looking. He knew he did something wrong! Those eyes of his say a thousand words. Trying to downsize and Soney is sure helping me! He missed his puppyhood so now he is making up for all that lost time! I am a collector of cute Teddy Bears and Cabbage Patch Dolls.

I'm sure Soney had lots of fun destroying the Halloween Teddy Bear, but I hope the rest of your collection is safe!

The other side, when you really think about it, Disney starts their "Not so Scary Halloween Party" events the first week in September as well as several other venues…it is all about marketing- more time to sell more products…unfortunately that is the world we live in these days- holidays are all very commercialized.

I wanted to say thanks to you for the high marks, and vote of confidence you sent along my way after not making it to the semi finals on the Scriptapalooza contest. I'm learning a few tricks of the trade, in my quarter finals placement, and realize that writing a first time commercial property, takes time and again, and several edits. These experiences have offered me a constuct for something I would share with everyoe ne. Set your sites for the all of abundance, trust your intinct and put your best effort into what you enjoy. The universe can't deny your desire. I am going back to Las Vegas for a few weeks to visit family, and setting up this new apartment has taken weeks, now there are water leaks. The managers are freaks. I would still rather stay in LA, as it's becoming a new home and the weather has been deviva. This summer, has been cool, and you can wear everything here as you well know, and I spend hours at a coffee shop writing and people watching something good is bound to happen, and I have that prayer for all of us. Love, Janzee

MeKhazSimi on August 5, 2010 at 1:51 am
          • Not fair! You didn't say part time! LOL I have been to all of those places on the Pacific and it is more rarely than part time. ^_^

EdinOregon on August 5, 2010 at 2:16 am
          • Me too—been there—-these places have more warm evenings than the Willamette Valley—but then this depends on your definition of "warm"———But I'll give you 1-point for WA (because technically the San Juan's aren't attached) and 1/2-point for Southern OR—–there is "some" fog and 1/2 point for Southern CA—there is "some" smog.—–but you know the sun is up there somewhere—unlike the 40 days and 40 nights of rain clouds. Okay okay—I somewhat concede—-that's the best the Aries side of me will allow. ha

MeKhazSimi on August 5, 2010 at 2:45 am
          • I know what you Aires are like, since I have been married to one for 42 years! ^_^ I prefer the cool nights here in the Willamette Valley. I was born in MA where high humidity hot nights were not uncommon. You can have the warm nights. In San Diego County, where I lived, even if it was 100+ during the day, an hour after the sun went down it was too cold to go in the pool. The 40 days and 40 nights of rain seems to be more of a 24 hour drizzle rather than real rain. Maybe that's why I never see people with umbrellas up here!

EdinOregon on August 5, 2010 at 3:54 am
          • "Drizzle" is a good description, and you're right —no umbrellas —but that's becasuOregonians are programmed for—- "damp" and "soggy".

MeKhazSimi on August 5, 2010 at 4:05 am
          • "Drizzle" is a good description, and you're right —no umbrellas —but that's because Oregonians are pre-programmed for—- "damp" and "soggy".

I remember now—Your wife can't wait to know what's in the Xmas presents. I agree with her 100%—I'm on her side—-If you know what's in all of them—-then you can relax and enjoy the anticipation of getting to open them for real on xmas morning—how fun is that?

It's like reading the end of a novel first—-then you can settle down and enjoy how the story arrives at the grand ending. Okay—this is all just an Aries thing—over and out.

  34. People and their speak–it's very comical as you say, to watch and to listen to the funny faced gestures, and the word's that come out of our mouths– and that's comedy with a big bow on it. We have such a ball on this site, finding the double meanings, raucous humor, subtle inuendos–"its all good". I am hearing this expression in California alot. JWmson lovey, I'll have to say, that if NYC comments were a carrot, for a future give away, I would be for it. I was a NYC girl for a short time as a child and loved wherever I hung my hat. With frequent visits growing up,I can't help the NY humor, love for all food, the way people dress, fascination for what's going on in someone's apartment, the night life, theater, business,in your face, it's all part of a city mentality. But…at this time of my life, a weekend visit, a short fall stay, would probably suffice. Like you, give me those wide open spaces.

      Thanks again!

      • Hey, OAF, how's it going? That is a lot of house. I don't think too many everyday people could even live there. The overhead costs would be prohibitive, never mind all that space. Seems like it would be more of an investment property to rent out. However, any of us will accept the challenge, right? :) :):)

    • I see we have two posts about this so I 'm moving my reply here..

This is different, might take awhile to warm up to. The ski dorm is a presumption that may or may not be utilized. I bet it will be furnished well and will look spectacular

BluSky on August 5, 2010 at 8:28 am
      • I don't know if the ski dorm will be utilized, but with three showers, there are probably be built in 3 or 4 level bunk beds. Would probably be a major effort to remodel.

  36. "Ski dorm" and "Car barn"…love the layout…great for family gatherings…definitely a different style than the past as we don't see home offices, etc. I'm guessing that this place has an intent of vacation home with rental potential. While I really do like the house, I do think that the pre-advertising of "family friendly home" aren't quite there as there isn't a setup in which your "typical" family can live everyday…I'm guessing we'll see no kids themed room here.

Our Army Family on August 5, 2010 at 12:35 pm
    • I think the floor plans look like it would be a perfect rental, OAF. That would be great for the winner who may not want to sell, as they could probably cover the costs with rental income.

      Wyo_Girl on August 5, 2010 at 12:45 pm
      • I saw one of the past winner interviews that said that HGTV presented then with options, including renting it out (however, they opted to sell), so that they could make a well informed decision…this place would be a great place to rent out and still be able to enjoy some yourself…I would love to win and see what options HGTV's legal people presented me with.

Our Army Family on August 5, 2010 at 4:58 pm
        • So is there a steel door with a security lock between the home owners section and the portion that could be rented to friends or whomever? A special hiddy hole for the entry key for the visitors?

          Can't wait for room pictures!

RJMstone on August 5, 2010 at 5:18 pm
          • The intent is usually to rent the whole thing out. The setup of the house as shown is one in which there is room for guests, but the reality is that many of those places at Stowe are rented out to different people for like a week at a time all winter…the owner wouldn't be there- it's not like a bed and breakfast sort of thing- you also wouldn't leave personal belongings other than the stuff the home comes with so that the renters have what they need.

Our Army Family on August 6, 2010 at 8:42 am

  40. Hi EdinOregon,

I was living there during the 17th October " shaker " in 1989 !! lol. That was a big one ! We were pretty casual about earthquakes up 'til then because we were so used to little tremblors, mini ones that would cause the chandeliers to swing madly to and fro' , small ones that would merely rattle the artwork on the walls, medium sized ones that would shake the kids in their bunk beds !!! We gotta respect Mother Nature in all her glory ! lol.

GoldieLocksBear on August 5, 2010 at 1:15 pm
  41. Just for something to do when we weren't getting much information from Mary I "decorated" the DH virtually with furniture pictures I found on the internet. I envisioned lots of chairs for seating in both a great room and a family room, and am delighted to see the floor plans showing 12 chairs total in the house! I wonder where the TV/media/game room is — upstairs or down? I'm assuming downstairs. It might have been a good idea to physically divide the ski dorm into a girls' side and a boys' side, maybe with sliding panels of some sort. Oh, lots of things to think about — what fun!

CplusE on August 5, 2010 at 1:32 pm
    • Hi CplusE. This is fun. A second laundry facility would be needed in the mud room. One set on the lower level would not be sufficient for this size group. The ski dorm is well thought out, I guess—three showers and sinks. Does a maid come with this DH? ha ha

MeKhazSimi on August 5, 2010 at 3:51 pm
  42. The entry from the kitchen area into the master bedroom seems rather convoluted — it almost looks like you come in through a closet! I'm having a hard time visualizing it — guess I'll just have to wait for the finished house photos!

CplusE on August 5, 2010 at 1:37 pm
    • I think it's laid out that way to give the master bdrm a privacy wall….so you can't see in from the kitchen.

CeeJoy on August 6, 2010 at 3:07 am
  43. Hi everybloggie !!!

Oh my goodness, as soon as I looked at the floorplans, I got goosebumps !! The architect certainly thought out this design thoroughly, it's gorgeous, and it works !!! Imagine driving into the garage, ( the roof pitch of which is perfect, so no snow removal before you can driv e in, which is an A + in my book ! ) Then you can remove snowy boots and jackets in the mudroom before entering the house, A+. Friends can arrive without being covered in snow – that nice "touch" of the covered entryway , another A+ !
Then…drumroll for the architect here please…….the first floor layout is absolutely BRILLIANT !!! Definitely a Family & Friends Friendly kitchen !! A++

GoldieLocksBear on August 5, 2010 at 1:42 pm
    • Actually Stowe is in a heavy snow area. You will be needing a good snow-blower. Roof pitch doesn't help, if anything it will force the snow off the roof quicker to prevent build up on the roof.

  44. Hi everybloggie,

Sorry to Hog the Blog this morning :O) lol But I'm so excited to see the floorplans of the house !
The ski dorm is a superb concept, this would fit my family to a T !!! Imagine all the big family gatherings and friends you could invite to stay !!!! And no one would have to draw the short straw and sleep on the sofa !!! lol.

GoldieLocksBear on August 5, 2010 at 1:49 pm
    • Right! The short straw would be for the third or fourth level bunk bed. I think I would rather have the sofa! ^_^

  45. It is wonderful to finally see the floorplan for the DH! It's very creative and well thought out! There is room for everyone!!!! I can picture the whole family playing, eating, enjoying the views from all of those wonderful windows! Summer or winter, what a great home!

  50. I don't get the barn door. Linda keeps describing it as being "hung OVER the family room door". It looks to be mounted on a wall NEAR the family room entrance. It's beautiful as rustic artwork.
