  1. WOW! Haven't been on the Dream Home blog in quite a while. Just looked at the photos of the Vermont DH and also the Urban Oasis. Both are so great! Would love to win either one of them but being from NY (Long Island) and not being able to ski, I guess I would opt for the NYC getaway apt. Such views!!!!!!! It would be perfect for when I want to enjoy the city or it would be wonderful for my daughter who is getting married and works in the city! But…I love the country and lots of trees so the Vermont DH would also be a lovely getaway. Oh, so many choices! I will enter for both and hope one of them is mine!

    • Thank you as always Cams for bringing these wonderful opportunities to our attention.

    • Thanks for the reminder Cami, but I don't think I'll enter that contest. I like my house, just need to renovate. I'll leave the Blog Cabin for someone else.

Lessie on August 20, 2010 at 11:34 pm
  3. There are so many threads that it is hard to choose which one should I be on. I am abandoning
this site as there is a new post or thread dated Aug. 19th today still about the oasis. Before not
enough to write about and now confusion galore. Because it is hard for me to focus sometimes
I need to stay with just one home. I guess the one I want to win the most. It is so hard for me to
believe that 900 sq, ft. can run 1,5 million dollars.

SandyLA on August 19, 2010 at 1:18 pm
    • SandyLA, in New York City, 900 sq ft is priceless, especially in that area with that view. You're in the midst of everything. That apartment is a golden opportunity for someone, especially someone who loves NYC.

Lessie on August 20, 2010 at 11:37 pm
  4. For those of you who enjoy visiting the Big Apple, but have no desire to live there. The blog cabin entries started today. That three bedroom home on five acres, is close enough for a day trip into Grand Central. Weekend jaunts are also a lot of fun. Then you could return to the peace and serenity of the Bethel countryside! At an ARV of $374,00 the taxes would make this prize a lot less expensive than most homes! And on weekends you could listen to the Woodstock Concerts from your back porch. While you were eating the deli delights you brought back with you from NYC! ^_^

EdinOregon on August 19, 2010 at 3:16 pm
    • Wow EdinOregon, I dont even listen to the nightly news anymore. It's just the blog.work and these contests. I dont know much about Bethel, but it's worth giving it a look see

Janzee on August 19, 2010 at 4:24 pm
      • I guess you were too young to appreciate the Woodstock Festival in Bethel NY in 1969! It's about 100miles from NYC.

EdinOregon on August 19, 2010 at 5:12 pm
        • You would think with the way outness sometimes, I would have been there, but I never got into the music. I was very involved with classical, dance, jazz, and experimental music, but Woodstock would have been sensory overload. Eddie, did you go? I think you may have mentioned once before.

Janzee on August 19, 2010 at 5:39 pm
          • Nope in '69 I was a father of one expecting the second son! My tastes in music are fairly ecclectic, but like you I think it would have been too much for me!

EdinOregon on August 19, 2010 at 8:25 pm
          • I love the cabin – it oozes PEACE . I was only 12 when Woodstock was happening that Aug. which is ironic that the giveaway starts 41 years & a day after the festival was held.
I turned 13 the next month & loved the music & the hope for peace. The youth of the day understood it as a 'peace'full rally not against our country but against the war. Shown no better than by Jimi Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner on his guitar. Of course, the older generation just saw a bunch of hippies listening to that wild music & behaving badly & doing drugs. Much like the news of the day portrays what they want us to hear. Think of the babies born there that weekend & I bet a lot conceived then. It is a part of American (music) history that showed the youth of the country cared what direction our country was going in – we should all be proud. more info . . . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodstock_Festival

    • My guess on Federal taxes for the Blog Cabin, which includes an average yearly income, is $157,000.00. Which would be due in April 2011, unless for some reason you didn't take possession of the Blog Cabin until Jan 1 2011. Anyone else want to hazard a guess. Honestly I don't know what the tax rate would be for an income of 450,000.00 plus. Ok I guess it is 35% and it isn't expected to change that much by Feb 2011. If you can get the ARV down to 370,000 and you don't claim any other income, your Federal tax would only be 122,000.00

Cami on August 19, 2010 at 6:51 pm
    • Just entered!!!! hey guys how u been? ive missed you all!! i've been so busy with school i couldn't make my way over here, but i just finished finals so i have a little time in between semesters to hang out with all of you! : ) i see ive missed a lot! a new house was thrown in the mix? i don't think im interested in living in NY though. ive lived 15 min away from it for most of my life and never had a desire to even go there! lol its too much for me, the few times ive been there have been overwhelming and more trouble than it was worth. besides an event or specific reason to visit, i just stay away! i might still enter for fun but nothing serious. its so awesome that they did this though. it will be a dream home to someone, thats for sure! i was thinking it would be cool for them to do something crazy like build in the city…and look at that! they did!! im gonna try to spend some time catching up on what ive missed but had to say a quick (or not so quick) HELLO!!! im so excited for the new sweeps at DIY and catching up with all of you!! hope everyone is well and enjoying their summers. its almost over but we'll have lots of fun here when we all come back in from the sun! : ) talk to you soon : )

AjaCale on August 19, 2010 at 7:42 pm
      • Hi Aja. I hope you did well on your finals. Welcome back. You will be caught up in no time. I think the $850,000 cash in lieu of the condo will interest me enough to enter every day! ^_^

EdinOregon on August 19, 2010 at 8:22 pm
        • Ditto Ed, it would be fun to visit it when you win the contest, perhaps take a short vacation there, then back to the countryside, and on with country living! For some of us, no matter how great the digs, being in a city is like being a fish out of water.

AnneEliseSouth on August 20, 2010 at 9:41 am
    • Let's see – a three bedroom home on five acres in Bethel or a 3 room high-rise apartment in NYC. Without a doubt I'd choose the Big Apple every time where I don't have to worry about snakes. People snakes yes, but creepy crawling snakes, NO! Wasn't a tough decision after all.

Lessie on August 21, 2010 at 11:01 am
  5. After a bit of reading, I'm impressed…with the Samsung oven range that is! The Urban Oasis kitchen may be compact, but you can cook, bake, boil or broil with the best of them thanks to that electric induction cooktop range and convection oven. Even I might be able to rival the best of the Cooking Channel Chefs' creations on that piece of high-tech equipment.

I can just see it now, turning out dishes as delicious as chocolate waffles with raspberry sauce, simple as Grilled Morbier Cheese and Roasted Red Pepper Sandwiches, ethnic as Uova in Purgatorio, heavenly as Cheddar Tomato Fondue, or as continental as Vegetable Stuffed Pork Tenderloin en Croute with Creole Mustard Cream Sauce, and last but not the least in calories, Almond Meringue Cake with Peaches. Yep, just give me one of those Samsung oven ranges and a few years of practice….

DBCoop on August 19, 2010 at 7:16 pm
    • Oh deliciosa Coop, with all of these Continental and very gourmet dishes, you are planning to make, perhaps with the help of one of your assistant chefs of your choosing, you will invite some of us for a flavorful evening of progressive eating at the W. First hordeves, in the living room, yes, and then we can move out to the patio on the roof. Can I start with the Meringue cake first? By the way, I know your secret— You must have a copy of the very Gold International Recipes. Nobody. has the well hidden Mustard Cream Sauce, but it is hidden away in the Gold Book for the select few to relish. I for one read it as a teenager, but was scoffed by my home ec class for my high in the sky gourmet ideas.

Janzee on August 19, 2010 at 11:28 pm
    • Coop, I hope Vern has provided a chef hat, and apron in this gourmet kitchen! if not a small shopping trip may be in order. To attempt these type of gourmet dishes without the proper attire might tempting the fates!
Presentation is so important! Even if the dishes don't come out perfect, with the proper wine, and sufficient amounts of it ,along with the fantastic views of the city , your guests will be so distracted, the meal will be a success for sure.
If all else fails, order from room service ahead of time, redish before the guests arrive, put on the chef outfit, serve, and sit back and let the compliments begin!

AnneEliseSouth on August 20, 2010 at 9:59 am
      • Good idea, AnneEliseSouth. I'm putting "order from room service" on my list of "must do" things for a winner's celebration party. Of course, shopping is on the list in position numero uno, and that will include a chef hat and appropriate apron. As you say, presentation is so important, and I'm sure Vern couldn't agree more.

DBCoop on August 20, 2010 at 1:44 pm
    • Coop, you cooking? That is priceless. Would love to see you whip up those recipes.

Lessie on August 20, 2010 at 11:45 pm
  6. Then there's one other piece of ultra-chic equipment that Vern used to great effect in the Urban Oasis bathroom—the Kohler Purist Tankless Hatbox Toilet. It's a veritable work of art and a modern day wonder. Of course, there is that retail price tag of $2,795, but this IS the Urban Oasis at the W after all. Why not treat yourself to the best!

DBCoop on August 19, 2010 at 7:22 pm
    • The best throne?

Cami on August 19, 2010 at 9:38 pm
    • u found a bargain – it was close to $5000 on the site I found

joplays on August 19, 2010 at 10:24 pm
    • Water saving and pretty cool to look at. Geez, I neve thought I would be fascinated with a toilet, but this one is worth the high ticket price and the high marks.

Janzee on August 20, 2010 at 12:50 am
      • You are hilarious Deerspring and oh so clever. May I copy this poem of yours and send it to my family? Back in the forties, they would say the girl is hoity toity, and arrives at the W at three thoity.

Janzee on August 20, 2010 at 2:34 pm
        • If you know my family, the lymericks, riddles, double entendres, and outrageous humor is right up their alley. They would love this you are Terrific. You just gotta laugh, its like a little electic surge, you can only hold on for so long, and then there is laughter.

Janzee on August 20, 2010 at 6:49 pm
    • I read in Barrron's that Japan's Toto "the Neorest 550" is the gold standard of toilets, but this Kohler Purist Tankless Hatbox Toilet is a lot prettier to look at.

      peter_nyc on August 20, 2010 at 9:13 am
      • So true, but can you imagine showing off your Urban Oasis to guests, and besides all of the obvious ooohhhs and aaahhhs (from entry hall to guest bedroom) they'd be totally impressed by your toilet?! That would be a first! I mean, it really is cool and unique, but I don't think I'd want it to be a topic for party conversation!

DBCoop on August 20, 2010 at 2:00 pm
    • I guess this toilet really earns the title of 'throne", at those prices, you'll be king or queen of your urban castle. All that's needed is a crown embossed with a big 'W":):):) But may I suggest that you hold court in another room!:):):)

AnneEliseSouth on August 20, 2010 at 9:31 am
    • Love that toliet. Vern definitely has taste!

Lessie on August 20, 2010 at 11:50 pm
      • I don't know Lessie. Taste & toilet in the same sentence doesn't sound quite right to me! ^_^

EdinOregon on August 21, 2010 at 2:30 am
        • You are so bad Ed! "Taste & toliet in the same sentence." That's a good one!

Lessie on August 21, 2010 at 11:06 am
          • That's what people have been telling me all my life! Sorry Lessie some things just sound funny to me. At least you weren't talking about your favorite chocolate Lindor truffles and toilet in the same sentence! ^_^

EdinOregon on August 21, 2010 at 12:45 pm
    • Form and function—it's all in the devilishly clever details! The "tankless" design of the Kohler Purist toilet was achieved by utilizing Kohler’s exclusive Power Lite technology – a quiet .2-horsepower electric pump fully enclosed with in the toilet bowl that provides a strong, powerful flush utilizing 1.6 gallons of water. Combined with an electronic "soft touch" actuator along the side of the toilet and the option for the water supply line to attach inside the bowl base by coming up through the floor, a smooth, streamlined external surface is achieved, making the toilet incredibly easy to clean and visually impactful.

As the famous line goes—one small step for man and woman, one giant leap for bathroom design.

DBCoop on August 21, 2010 at 12:29 am
      • Coop, thanks for providing the details. That's once nice toliet!

Lessie on August 21, 2010 at 11:08 am
  7. I entered the DH cabin today sweeps, and I love the three acres of land with the wooden picket fence. It's amazing what a little love and attention can do for these special homes with land. Reneelovesgreen you have been talking about this for months and I hope that you will take a look at the finished product and let me know what you think.

Janzee on August 20, 2010 at 12:47 am
    • Actually Janice it is a little over 5 acres. It is definitely an improvement over the original design from 40 years ago!!

EdinOregon on August 20, 2010 at 3:25 am
      • Oh Gosh Eddie, I wonder if there are any ponds on the property. Can you imagine, with that acreage, you could probably certainly have a horse, a green house, and a lovely woodshed for winter toys. Your kids might love this place. I'm just in the mode, of where I could actually see myself. Gonna enter today, and all the way through October.

Janzee on August 20, 2010 at 2:37 pm
  8. The name of the Urban Oasis building the "W" reminds me of an old movie "It's a Mad. Mad, Mad World". I keep seeing Jimmy Durante's face and voice saying "look under the big W" with his Brooklyn accent.
This apartment, like the hidden treasure in the movie is "under the big W". Sorry folks, just another of my trips to the "far side". Which as many of you know, I visit frequently, and quite enjoy.

AnneEliseSouth on August 20, 2010 at 10:10 am
    • That's okay Anne. I went there with you. Loved that movie. Remember when the guy kicked the bucket. ^_^

EdinOregon on August 20, 2010 at 4:49 pm
      • This guy did kick a bucket! Is this it? A friendly hi from the linking moster! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP2WCpHIg1Y&fe

        • That's the scene. Where the Schnozz kicks the bucket. They left out the part where he says he kicked the bucket after the one guy said he's dead. ^_^

Oh, please, please pick me! I would love to win!! The space is truly amazing. I would be happy for someone else who's deserving to win, but of course I'd be thrilled if it was ME!! Good luck to you all!!!

  13. Hi Absent for a week—life's little details. New blog post—-but I'm still sentimental about this one. So before I toss my loyalty back to the DH I'll bask in this view one more time—it's just so awesome. I didn't think there was anything I'd really change about it, other than minor personal touches. But with fall and winter on the horizon—-I decided I'd like to see a http://www.europeanhome.com/images/gallery/img-dv… similar to this one placed below the flat screen TV. There now I'll move to the new blog. LOL

    • What a gorgeous picture of two beautiful people. Did you just get married? Welcome to the blog, and may there be so many things for you both to look forward to on HGTV.

Janzee on August 29, 2010 at 12:21 am
  17. Hi sweetheart, I'm so glad to hear you. and see your posts. We think of you daily as well, and very thankful that Robert is making little healing steps. Thank God. It sounds like there are many things that you are doing to keep busy with your volunteerism which is so greatly needed. I know that the RNC headquarters appreciates your work and look forward to seeing you. I think that there is a feeling of new economic conservatism, and in my own life am learning that a little can go a long way. Recently a friend visited after thirty three years, and we made a lovely chicken dinner. I was about to toss the bones, and my friend took over my little corner, and in one fell swoop, gathered the bones, every morsal of chicken, and a touch of the fat, put it in a plastic container, and said "now you have soup stock". Two days later, I made soup thinking of the way she stretched another meal, and was grateful for her lessons.

Janzee on August 30, 2010 at 2:15 am
    • Agreed Janice. Too bad our government is still living high on the hog rather than stretching the soup bones!

EdinOregon on August 30, 2010 at 2:28 am
      • New times, and new measures often produces positive results. There are so many stories about people who have changed their lives for the positve as a result of the economy. I think that HGTV has offered some unique solutions.

Janzee on August 30, 2010 at 2:43 am
        • Agreed! I think that more and more people are realizing that good times spent with family and friends are much more satisfying and enjoyable than material goods. We have always made it a sort of contest around here to see who could get the most bang for the buck.

EdinOregon on August 30, 2010 at 2:53 am
  18. Hello kiddos, I am in Irvine today through tomorrow, so if there is anyone in town let me know. Over the weekend, on Saturday, I have the great morning free, and if anyone has a few hours and want to meet up around Robertson give me a holler and we can find a quiet restaurant, maybe something outdoors, and no signs paparazzi, or billboards. If this week doesn't work, we will surely find another one. Love Janzee

Janzee on September 1, 2010 at 2:27 pm
  19. I have to run too, but around the southwest here, so many friends string the larger peppers outside to dry and keep them stung up for the asking. I have grown several varieties, but have always dreamt of a little more land so I can grow for my family, neighbors and several limited soup kitchens's of my chossing. Growing pepperrs would be just one of every veggie that can be grown for the season. I helped in the kitchens in three cities we've lived, and enjoyed the people, the administration and the benefit for all involved. I think I had the most fun.

Janzee on September 1, 2010 at 4:10 pm
  20. The Urban Oasis is awesome and truly NYC. Vern & HGTV has created a Masterpiece in the City. This would be a dream come true for anyone that loves what NY has to offer. It is a tremendous opportunity for anyone that is fortunate to win! The view of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the the Waterways are spectacular. Great job!
