  1. A strange thing has happened, after reading your post, I have the unexplicable, uncontrolable urge to break out into Show Tunes! Ah the power of suggestion. Nice creative post Deerspring!

AnneEliseSouth on August 15, 2010 at 2:08 pm
    • Hello Deery!!! we sang those show tunes as kids. I cant help that in the spirit of things that we have all created a persona closely akin to these Broadway shows. Maybe HGTV goes Broadway.

      • What a beautiful poetic comment Deerspring. I am feelin the music!!!!

  2. Deerspring, This is so great!!! The entire post—–is dancing on stage,. I love it. Thanks for sharing. LOL

  3. Coop, the Saugerties Lighthouse reminds me of Jack Nicholas's mansion in "Witches of Eastwick".The same tidal access situation. I bet one could have a "devil" of an experience staying in the lighthouse! Not for the claustrophobic traveler for sure!

  5. I liked the cabinets – last one on the 2nd row with all the scroll design around the edges of the cabinets & the microwave built in to the lower cabinet. says it is Rose Hall Square maple in medium stain. nice really nice

  6. Deerspring: Well, "Hello Dolly". Your are "Wicked". Maybe the winner will be "A Little Girl from Little Rock" or the gal "Who Cain't Say No" or "Little Orphan Annie". My postcard back to you is "Everything's Coming Up Roses" lyrics read "Light the lights…..". Well, they are lit at the amazing Urban Oasis. "New York, New York, it's a Wonderful Town". Good luck to you Deerspring!

    • We are going to have to roll out the red carpet as the star studded winner walks into this show place. Top hats, evening gowns, and Gail's magic stars thrown around like confetti.

    • Deerspring: I am a funny girl. In researching “You're the Top” I was stunned by the lyrics of Cole Porter. I've heard it a gazzion times, but to actually read them, wow! At the end of the verse I'll leave you with his words and my sentiment, “At least it'll tell you how great you are”.

  7. Coop: Are you losing it? Ten posts of Lighthouses. When we are talking about the NYC Urban Oasis?. Are you trying to lure Marie Miller back to the blog? I miss her too. Dear friend, I will forgive you because you had a major glitz on your electrical system. I've had a glitz in my brain that says go to sleep, so I will.

  8. This dog looks just like Soney. And we have stairs like this leading to the basement. Now that I know how to link (sort of) I need to learn how to post a picture. And how to use the new camera my son and daughter in-law got for me. Soney is so happy his tail wags like this all the time! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWKnfWtCvr0&fe

alicesoneysmom on August 15, 2010 at 8:14 pm
    • Hi Alice! If Soney looks like that dog in the video then he is one big happy cutie! My liver-spotted Dalmatian, Gia, likes to sprawl out like that on the rug right after she eats sometimes — kind of reminds me of a person who loosens their belt after a big meal to "relax" their belly! Intensedebate gives good instructions on how to download a picture for your avatar (that grey face next to your name) and if you have picture files on your computer it is easy to load one of your own!

CplusE on August 16, 2010 at 10:15 am
      • Hi C&E good to talk to you. How is Diamond and your husband and your horse and you how are you all doing? Soney is a cutie that is for sure! Soney sprawls out like Gia does when he goes outside and lays in the sun holding a ball in his mouth. It has been sunny here for a few days. Yesterday it was 91 degrees. Take care and talk to you soon.

alicesoneysmom on August 16, 2010 at 11:24 am
    • I watched the range of emotions in a couple of utube films including the boxer, that one was hysterical. has Soney every done this–it's highly intelligent behavior.

  9. Speaking of Stowe. How could you not love Stowe! Soney and I do! http://www.stowbiz.com/audio.htm

alicesoneysmom on August 15, 2010 at 8:51 pm
  10. UOasis – did anyone else notice the dragon hanging on the wall in the living room – it's unique – & even the dragon loves the view. Also I zoomed on all of it as high as I could & that painting (or print) in the kitchen is really nice. But I like the lion closer to the kitchen than the one closer to the door – I like the yellowed look rather than the all white. wonder why they are not closer to the same color. I have heard that a lot of people in high rises have telescopes. With nothing on the windows, the only place to change clothes is on one side of the bathroom unless that is reflective glass. ??? It looks like there is storage at the window seat in the bedroom. I would like to lay blankets over that & sleep there & fall asleep watching the sights.

    • What a great comment joplays, watching the NY skyline as you fall asleep.

Janzee on August 16, 2010 at 1:27 pm
      • considering I am a small town girl – it would be like having fireworks every night. we didn't have fireworks this year for all the rain & flooding. what is ironic is that some of the people who live in a flood zone & can't get flood insurance got the worst of it. it looks like fema isn't gonna help them either cause they lived in a flood zone. that is just all kinds of wrong. don't know any of them personally – but cant help feel they are getting the short straw.
still not as bad as it is in Pakistan.

joplays on August 16, 2010 at 5:31 pm
        • Oh yes joplays. You certainly need a place or be able to escape to a place where you can see fireworks every night. On a very small scale, I was taking a walk when I visited the mountains in Idllywild Calfornia. I noticed this little rumpledown house, where a family had the curtains opened and I peeked in slighly. They had tea lights on this scultpural looking tree and they were blinking like little stars. They all seemed so happy in the smallest and most modest place. I wonder if it was the blinking lights.

Janzee on August 16, 2010 at 5:44 pm
          • I was in my backyard trying to pick up a fence panel that had blown down & the people renting the little house behind me stated they didn't think anyone lived here. Kinda embarassed me but . . . I am a tortoise & slowly getting things done. But the estimate on a new fence was $4913 & a 3% upcharge for a charge card. – lol UH NO! Gonna have to get another estimate somewhere else. It's just a wood fence & that's not stained or anything. So . . . bit by bit my home will looked lived in. I love my old haunted house.

joplays on August 16, 2010 at 6:08 pm
          • Here is a little humor, in the moment of a hard time, but something we all need. You remind me of a female version of Tom Sawyer with your fence. Now, you have to share a Tom Sawyerish adventure, that you were in recently.

          • this last weekend with no air cond shows me I am not as strong as I used to be. I can't handle the heat. considered getting me a kiddie pool – lol just to sit & cool off in. lol with my fence blown down the neighbors might complain hahahaha.

          • I live in a community with some HOA's and many folks are older than I am. No matter, I am also looking to get a kittie pool for pup, and may decide to climb in for a splash around. I am a grown woman, and if I want to swim in my kittie pool, it's too durn bad!!! Lol Like you ,I love getting a rise out of people, and have been known to say things with eagle eyes that raises eye brows. We as woman with our wildish nature, deserve to strut our tail feathers, desire, and have the pleasure of our lives. A friend of mine once said, "it doesn't matter where you live", even if its two walls and a roof, it's only a shell. The house is inside.

          • but after my divorce a few years ago – the man next door offered to help me out with the yard & anything else I needed done. I am a young 53, but I am not a floozy. I was shocked & said – no thanks with a shocked grimace. He is married with small kids – how dare he!!! So no kiddie pools for me without a fence up. His mother in law used to live there with her 2 little girls – one of them he married. Geez. So I am not trusting of too many people & keep pretty much to myself & my pups. You can count on pups to cheer you up – console you when you are down & always there for you.

          • I am glad you stay in your own back yard, and have drawn a line in the sand. I so agree about our dogs, cats and animals. They are quietly there to tell us how much we are loved, and no matter what's going on in the world they are always up for a conversation.

          • I wanted to be a vet when I was young – then I had my 1st allergic experience around cats – eyes swelled – whelps up & down my arms from holding my cousins kitties – uncontrollable sneezing itching all over – & that was that . . . still love most animals . . . kitties are ok if they don't rub up against me.

  11. This New York living area is so different from the current Stowe, Vermont "treehouse" dream home.
The Treehouse is also filled with many windows and also great views…….
but it has TREES inside the lower level!! OMG

It shows on the blueprints here….. http://blog.hgtvpro.com/dream-home/2010/08/13/flo

RJMstone on August 16, 2010 at 4:15 pm
    • Not sure that those are really trees, as he is standing in an empty concrete space in the video. I'm puzzled by the drawings on the blueprint.

      • Are you sending me home dear Janice? Did I do a faux pas?

Where is home? HGTV has so many contests going on….. we just like to talk about them which ever Blog we are on. Wasn't that what everyone did when doing the clue Blogs?

I was commenting as I have personally been jumping back and forth, in love with both of them. What I meant was, that for the moment we are on any blog, it becomes home. The little hat reference had to do with the cute little hat RJMStone wears on his/her head. Please forgive any misunderstanding

          • AH! The thrill of wondering if we could possibly win one of these HGTV dwellings is spinning our heads. LOL
If I was ever so lucky to have the dilemma of needing to decide if I wanted to live in the new residence of the HGTV home location or not ……. Oh boy!! ……. guess I would stay there for a couples of months and then decide YES or NO. If….NO…. then I would gladly sell to the certain someone who would love to purchase it in a hurry!
Such a great opportunity…. I could finally leave where I now live! Hmmmm… BUT I could then build my own dream home around here. A win-win situation!!

RJMstone on August 17, 2010 at 10:41 am
          • May the wheel of fortune, offer one of us lucky bloggers this fabulouso opportuniy. Hows about if HGTV could offer a three day/night stay in Vern Yip's NY condo. Maybe a Freeby Friday winning? Your expression-"that certain someone-wasn't that a line from one of the classic movies"? I think our decision making process would be real easy, if we could stay in the Urban Oasis in luxury for three days, and then report back to everyone on the blog. Stone– you also mentioned that five day stay in Stowe, offered by gostowe.com . I entered, by didn't get a confirmation on the entry. The wheels are turning, and will keep us hopping for many months to come.

          • A G.R.E.A.T and S.U.P.E.R idea Janzee! ! !

FILM that lucky someone! Going out to eat, exploring NYC, etc.

RJMstone on August 18, 2010 at 12:24 pm
          • I think that HGTV has a few surprises up thier sleeves. The Stowe information center has that five day trip in the works, so it would seem reasonible to fuel the Urban Oasis well before the contest to have a few drawings for a trip in to see the "hood",

Janzee on August 18, 2010 at 2:15 pm
    • I missed the trees

  12. I like the idea that HGTV now has something for everybody. I think that the Urban Oasis would definately accomadate a single person, or retired couple and would love to see unique rehabs and Urban Oasis opportunites around the country in the larger cities like LA. Chicago, San Francisco, Miami, etc.

Janzee on August 16, 2010 at 4:58 pm
    • I am a single person & feel it would be unfair to them to coop my dogs up in an apartment. Oh & I have Air conditioniong again after a week – been without in heat in the upper 90's. la ti da ti da – i am a happy camper & so is Newbie – I would tell him to drink more water – but he is dumber than dirt. Angel is smart & kept hydrated. So did I . I kept a water bottle in the freezer & it would be like a cold pack or take 15 minutes in the evening to go to the store in a one horse town that the whole trip would take that long. Air conditioning in the car just made coming back inside more miserable. gained 3 pounds eating ice cream for a week. the weekend was what was bad. It cost under $100 to get it & my toilet to quit running. I was thrilled!!!! still need to get all the plumbing replaced in this old house but . . . when he is less busy with his current project – that will be next – maybe for my birthday. My heat pump coil switch was stuck on heat was all .

joplays on August 16, 2010 at 5:52 pm
      • I hear you joplays. Are there any lakes in your area? I think that after a week of work, maybe treat yourself to a day near the lake, bring the pups, and the posicles, and a bucket of ice. If I am going to gain weight, ice cream is my undoing. Recently, I started experimenting with first freezing almond milk in ice cube trays and then you put the whole kaboodle in a blender or a capped juicer. Add a touch of vanilla coconut chocolate nibs, or carob, the sky is the limit. You can even make a popsickle on those dog day summers. When in Vegas, I am learning to get out of dodge but fast, head up to the mountains and camp off the side of the truck. I get 20 cooler up there, and in some camp ground communites everyone shares fruit, food, and wood.

Janzee on August 16, 2010 at 6:46 pm
        • there is a small lake. after work I would do things in Lubbock before coming home & slowly get groceries & open the windows as soon as I got in. If I had known it was gonna be that easy to fix I would have called sooner. but they commented how old it was & surprised it worked at all & I was afraid they were gonna say I needed a whole new system. If you get really hot, you don't think as well. I could only inagine chocolate in here. not fond of coconut but i could use mint or some of my creme de mint liqueor. when my dad died in 85 – I got all the liquor – my sister is a teetotaller & I would drink occasionally. does it get old? I also have some creme de cocoa I am not sure what to do with. but the york minis I had in my candy jar went into the fridge this past week & they are now gone. disappeared with the gallons of milk over ice I drank.

joplays on August 16, 2010 at 7:17 pm
          • It's comforting, to have those candy jars around, and some ingredients that you could pop into the blender just a drop is all you need of the creme de mint, and maybe some chocolate, a couple cups of almond milk, and lets say, some honey for sweeter. You then have your own homemade ice cream, as you set out on the porch on a night. Many a night over the years, I find myself in the silence of a backyard staring straight up at the stars. That's my best relaxation. Joplays you know the old saying "an apple a day, makes joplay grow her own apple tree in the backyard".

Olivia Wilder Times on August 16, 2010 at 6:36 pm
    • Hi Olivia, you have a lovely name, and it sounds very much like a writer. On the Sweepstakes button, the sweeps are not open yet. Click first on Urban Oasis, then move your cursor far to the right, and you will see a time panel: 15 DAYS13:10:46 I cut and pasted what I just saw. Sept. 1, is the first day of entry, and you can sign up for the news reminder which will alert you to the day to enter. I hope this helps.

  14. Speaking of NYC can you see Soney and me trying to find our way in a big city. And living on the 34th floor and everytime Soney wanted to play ball or do his business up and down the elevator until we got dizzy. And where do you play ball? Lots of people fit into this lifestyle. We live in a small town compared to NYC. Thought we lived on a busy street but it is quiet compared to NYC. 16. UO – still no place for a piano – unless the lions go & put in the hall with track lighting above it. Cami's baby grand – nowhere for that. . . With the big tree in Lincoln Center – don't guess I need my own big tree. maybe a little one on the ledge in the living room. It would be good to go ahead & get rid of some of the old Christmas ornaments & go ahead & pass them down to the kids. It is time to downsize whether here or NY or Stowe or Bethel

joplays on August 16, 2010 at 9:58 pm
    • "unless the lions go…"
Oh no joplays. What if you need to use the emergency evacuation parachute!
Could throw one of those heavy lions to break the window. Are the windows "breakable"? http://www.evacuchute.com/products_build_civilian

Those lions could even be decorated for each holiday! Santa hats, "bachelor party" ties, Easter bunny ears, Valentine cupid arrow threw head headband, etc. etc .etc. LOL

There's a good reason Vern put those LIONS there! Hmmm what are they?
Letterman would have 10 reasons on a list by now.
      1. The home of the King of the Urban Jungle
      2. Be proud of your 2 vicious pets protecting your place
      3. If your words' credability is ever questioned…. put your hand on a lion and say, "I'm not lion."
      4.
Can anybody think of any more??

RJMstone on August 17, 2010 at 2:54 pm

  17. If I really think about it – my style is more laid back – this old flowerpower girl would probably fit in better at Woodstock. In the open & see the stars – good reason for a telescope – but it is just too much property for one person to handle. I would like that apt in the country & have that barn on blog cabin made into guest quarters or a casita with a kitchette & a pool. Then I would be in heaven. Built into the back of the barn would be a 3 foot deep storage area for riding mowers, ski mobile (depending on the area), and storage cabinets for seasonal items. that would be ideal for me. really love those window ledges in the OA & the fireplace in the blog cabin.

  20. So you think you know New York City? Have a picture in mind of life lived strictly in the fast lane? Well, if you haven't checked out this link yet (at frontdoor.com) about all the goings-on in Lower Manhattan, and the top 10 reasons you might want to consider it home, it's well worth a read. After seeing all that's fresh and new so smoothly interwoven with its 400 years of history, I'm more excited than ever about the chance to win the 2010 Urban Oasis.

DBCoop on August 17, 2010 at 1:31 am
  21. Of course, one really big reason to look into the good life in Lower Manhattan is the dream of winning the HGTV Urban Oasis Sweepstakes. As for the top ten reasons listed in the frontdoor.com article, I've managed, with great difficulty, to pare my own list down to a mere 7 out of the top 10, and then added a few of my own. Hey, don't laugh—let's see how well you do! I mean, even admitting to just a hint of a spirit of adventure, it's impossible not to dream. So go ahead. I'm curious to know if I'm the only one who can't stop at just one, or two, or three….

Waterfront living, spectacular views, generous parks and green spaces, excellent restaurants, a plethora of entertainment choices any day or night of the week, great shopping (from designer names to bargains for hardly more than pocket change), fast food to fine dining, an exotic blend of ethnic food shops, superb art and architecture, great people watching, and did I mention all of the amazing dining options yet?

DBCoop on August 17, 2010 at 1:32 am
    • Yes, Coop, there are a lot of reasons to look into the good life of the Financial District or FiDi as we say. For me, the dream of winning the HGTV Urban Oasis Sweepstakes means hotel style living in a condo with an actual bedroom 46% larger than my current apartment–ah to dream.

      peter_nyc on August 17, 2010 at 9:05 am
      • Oh my gosh! And here we have people complaining that this Oasis is too small. Good luck Peter, I'm sure you would be one of the few that would actually live here.

SweetLiz on August 17, 2010 at 11:31 am
        • thanks, Liz. you too!

          peter_nyc on August 17, 2010 at 1:43 pm
      • It's really amazing when you stop to think about all of the square footage that Americans take for granted in their homes or apartments, other than in the biggest urban metro centers. Certainly far more than most any other country.

However, though it's taken a very long time to reach, it seems that the McMansions are now falling out of favor because of the recent economic fallout, the large number of empty-nesters in the US, and the smartest reason of all, the growing interest in eco-friendly building.

By the way, as often as I've seen the FiDi acronym, I've heard it pronounced a number of different ways—Fye-Dye, Fye-Dee (my preference), Fye-Duh, and Fee-Dee. It seems even native NYC denizens can't agree.

DBCoop on August 17, 2010 at 12:22 pm
        • My preference is Fye-Dee too. It's funny that you mention it. I always see it in print but I cannot say whether I've heard it pronounced. The name won't stick until it becomes a destination. It seemed that The Meatpacking District name didn't get wide acceptance until about 12 years ago when development started with the opening of the boutique Jeffrey, which was to me the first sign of true transformation. Some long time new yorkers still call the Meatpacking District the Meat Market

          • That's interesting. Funny how words take on different connotations from one generation to the next. I guess I'd go with the Meatpacking District name. Otherwise who knows where you'd end up by giving the older nomenclature to a taxi driver after a few too many cocktails…

        • I think the theater and all forms of art would capture me, and the cultural diversity. There would be opportunities every night of the week in a city that never sleeps, to experience people and all the peopleish things they do, be it traditional programs, food, museums. What a lifelong learning experience!! LA has it's fashion, and it's "acunamatada" (no worries) but finds me running around in circles to try to make appointments and get things done, but NY is the starting place for making things happen and have warm childhood memories of this city.

EdinOregon on August 17, 2010 at 3:39 pm
    • Now that you have learned how to get more things done with the California layed back attitude, you should be able to get twice as much done in NYC! And the beauty of it is you won't have to waste time running around in circles like they do in the big apple! ^_^

  22. Okay, I'm a little jazzed about this whole new venture from HGTV…and I can't wait for September 1 to start entering. Come to think of it, I can't wait to get to NYC for a visit and check it out in person, even if only for a day.

" The Financial District may be gaining in popularity as a residential neighborhood, but come October 20th, someone will be able to say they didn't pay a dime for the new luxury condo seen above. But fear not, developers, someone is indeed picking up the bill: the suits at HGTV. This is the 1BR/1BA apartment on the 33rd floor of the W New York Downtown Hotel & Residences being given away to one random sweepstakes winner as part of the network's Urban Oasis special. The contest website has launched at HGTV.com/urbanoasis, but folks can't enter until September 1st……….which was designed by HGTV personality Vern Yip (and goes to the winner fully furnished). "

Besides hot dogs, what other food is NYC famous for?

Is there really a soup nazi in NYC?

Cami on August 17, 2010 at 4:57 pm
    • I hate to take this answer away from cheesecakelover, but I'd go with New York Cheesecake. Also, anything from a deli, especially a Reuben Sandwich, screams New York to me.

      Wyo_Girl on August 17, 2010 at 5:12 pm
      • Yum thank you Wyo girl. Would you believe I just finished a bowl of rice Krispies. I hardly ever eat cereal, especially at 3pm. When you're hungry strange things sound good to you I guess.
Now if I had cheesecake, : ( It would already be gone. Sweets don't last very long around here.

Cheesecake and a cheesesteak sub sound good right now. Yep that is the order I would eat them in too. ; )

Cami on August 17, 2010 at 5:33 pm
        • Cami – I like Krispies but I put Alpha bits in mine & no other sweetener needed. I call it krispies & bits & it is really good. Krispies get soggy before I can eat them & the bits don't – perfect combo.

    • Hi Cams you know the story of the soup nazi guy, the character was inspired by Al Yeganeh, a New York City soup vendor who runs Soup Kitchen International in midtown Manhattan at 259A West 55th Street, near 8th Avenue, and The Original Soup Man chain of restaurants throughout the United States. He had a Stalinish mustache, and made everyone tow the mark, "do as I say do", but amazing soup. People came in the the shop, to be verbally brow beaten, but eat like a king. It was closed for awhile, but I hoid it its being reopen. And… I just got off the phone with Katz's on the lower east side, and asked them "where is the soup nazi, Cami wants ta know"? He said let me tell ya we ha have the usual, matzah ball soup, split pea, pastrami, and a belly full of sandwiches.

Janzee on August 17, 2010 at 7:20 pm
    • You heard right, Janzee. Edited from a Reuters article by Michelle Nichols dated 7/21/2010: In Hell’s Kitchen, fiery shouts of “No Soup For You!” are set to flare anew. A New York City soup vendor made famous after he inspired Seinfeld's "Soup Nazi" character on the popular TV show reopened his original Manhattan stall on Tuesday, but Al Yeganeh did not show up for the celebrations. Six years ago, Yeganeh shuttered that eatery to open Original SoupMan franchises in eight states and Canada.
For 20 years Yeganeh — who calls himself "The Original SoupMan"— dished out soup with very strict rules: "Pick the soup you want! Have your money ready! Move to the extreme left after ordering!" If you did not stick to the rules: "No soup for you!" Other rules included no extraneous comments, no questions, no compliments.

Can you imagine if MARY had similar rules for the blogs? We'd all be out in the cold and the blogs would be thread bare.

DBCoop on August 17, 2010 at 8:49 pm
      • No fury hath a soup scourched. I'll bet Yeganeh never burned a good soup, and people loved his ordering everyone about routine. Under his toot, soups gots made, and no nonsense. It's these billions and billions of stories that have made NY what it is today. You Coop, know the scoop, and as a citizen of the world, you tell a story.

  33. On Cami's inspiration, I started to compile some restaurants that have a good reputation in different parts of NY. The beauty about dining out is that you don’t have to drive, cook or deal with parking. Take the cab, or walk door to door. The New York City Restaurant Week occurs twice a year, in January and June, to entice New York City visitors and residents to experience some of New York City's best restaurants at a fraction of the usual price. Discount lunches and dinners are available at many New York City restaurants during the twice annual Restaurant Weeks. Babo, and was opened by Mario Batali and Joseph Bastianich in 1998 and has been impressing diners with high-quality Italian wine and food ever since. Address: 110 Waverly Place,Phone: 212-777-0303. One of my favorite things about eating out is having the chance to try a bite of many different dishes — and restaurants that focus on small plates for sharing are perfect for this. Try the truffled egg toast($9), but you won't want to miss out on their cheeses, charcuterie, salads or panini, accompanied by great wines (many reasonably priced) and outstanding coffee are a great way to experience the creative and delicious offerings at Babbo. Balthazar is Best Bet for Bistro Fare and Seafood, Since 1997, diners have been enjoying delicious steak frites and seafood at Balthazar. Balthazar has a wonderful vibe — everyone is welcome from young scene-seekers to middle-aged couples from the mid-west. The French Bistro is another one that I heard was terrif and located in Soho. Bond Street-cool name,is a Japanese restaurant and is minimal in décor, yet excitingly inventive on the plate. Along with Nobu (from which BondSt's chefs originally hailed), BondSt serves the best and freshest sushi in New York. Models, financiers and fish aficionados all flock to the perennially hip establishment to dine on sashimi and other Asian-inspired, minimalist dishes. I love this one, and would frequent B. Smiths Restaurant B. Smith is the Martha Stewart of Soul Food, in part due to the former's syndicated hit show "B. Smith with Style." B. Smith takes her upscale yet down-home recipes and adds an Asian flair that has become the (shrimp) toast of the New York, both up and down town.

(My 6yr old daughter -within the last 12 days- went to having no tics, to having all over body tics that are so bad she can't walk. Working now on neurologist appts and paperwork for home tutor. While I put on my "advocate" coat, I will peek in on all of you – to at least read the board.) Thanks to all for making this such a friendly spot. Hope to be able to blog you all soon :)

      • Hi Janzee, sorry for the confusion. By tics, I meant Tourette's Syndrome tics (argh! Actually, the creepy crawly tics makes my post gross " all over body" ….lol. It's good to find humor in things) We have battled lyme disease, her twin brother was diagnosed with it when he was 4.

Thank you for your concern and prayers.

zipdedoda on August 17, 2010 at 9:49 pm
        • Thank God for our humor here. Check out Tourettes in association with sugar and wheat allergies. Check her also for LYmes. I know that sounds over the top, but vitamins like a B complex 100(no yeast) will help and look at blood work for cal, mag, and zinc, and potassium deficiency. Look intensely online for alternate help over and above doctor prescribed medication.

of special needs kids and have had almost everything you can think of. It was such a shame
that so few parents advocated for their children so I had to. Most parents are just in denial and
this included my own daughter. I couldn't get her to accept for three years!! Now she is the
most ferocious mother of all. She is a lawyer and understands how to deal with the school
        district!!!!!

SandyLA on August 19, 2010 at 12:18 am
        • We have had many foster children Sandy. We adopted seven special needs children. We also had one of our own children who developed problems later in life. If one is not advocating strenously for their children, they are not doing the job a parent should be doing! My sister is a lawyer too. She knew how to deal with the school district. She home schooled her three daughters. They were all in college by the time they were 13. All three of them have graduated from UC Berkeley. Two are working on advanced degrees. One in medicine and the other is getting her PHD in math. The youngest one is working as a CPA and plans to go back to college after she has more job experience.

A friend of my son was out of control hyper until his mom figured out it was gluten & he was put on a gluten free diet. Also no sugars except natural like honey was allowed. The human body is complicated, but often self healing. We are often left with no answers as to why our bodies do unexplained things, but are grateful for any improvements along the way. Stay positive.

We haven't had many illnesses in our family all school year and within the last month we have been in and out of ER's and doctors at least 10 times.. All is fine here, since we expect these kinds of things to happen, but I would rather spread things out over the whole year. Very strange.

  35. Hi, theshecreature. I feel compelled to defend not only MaryJanes but also chicken bones, raspberry filled candies and others too numerous to mention. Speaking as one over 50, when I was a child these candies were very tasty with' lots of filling 'and high quality more natural ingredients. I agree, todays candies taste like cardboard by comparison. Now, it's all about artificial ingredients and making a higher profit, resulting in an inferior product. Unfortunately, it's s sign of the times. Even butterscotch of today can't compare except maybe in color. Just thought I'd throw that in. :) :):) Have a good one.

JWmson on August 18, 2010 at 12:17 pm
    • Hi JWmson, I am soooo happy to see you. This is the first time I have ever heard of Chicken bones. Were they jellys? The only thing I was allowed to eat was Mary Janes, but if there so much as happened to be any cookies in the house, I would grab handfuls.

Janzee on August 18, 2010 at 1:12 pm
      • Hi,Janzee!!! Hahaha, chicken bones! Actually, they are long slender, filled hard candies. Still available but no where near as much filling now, therefore not as good. Whenever I see older candies and am tempted to try them they are NEVER as good and it isn't my tastebuds. Sometimes the taste isn't so different but it's all in the filling. This is too funny, really! So, how are you?" I don't get around much, anymore", here. Good old song, though. :) :) Cookie Monster???

JWmson on August 18, 2010 at 1:43 pm
        • There is enough space for treats in the Urban Oasis, but we would probably have to stash them under our sweaters in the ample storage in the bedroom. I'm sure you could find something like the old chicken bones in a penny candy store, if they still exist in NY. They never called me cookie monster, but no one knew I was snitchin the cookies.

  36. In a press release dated August 18, 2010: A bit of interesting info about the W Hotel and Residences—The glass-clad tower sits on a five-story, limestone and glass podium that features a subtle grid pattern of white, grey and clear glass panels. Inside, W New York – Downtown's design is based on the creative idea of a "ripple effect" or wave of energy. You will immediately experience this ripple effect concept with a spectacular light shower installation by UK light sculptor Bruce Munro. Suspended from the second floor ceiling and reaching down to the street lobby, the massive light installation is comprised of 1,260 individually hung clear Tear Drop diffusers, illuminated via fiber-optic projectors with the ability to reprogram colorations at any time. The sense of glowing waves of energy continues into W New York – Downtown's Living Room Bar & Terrace, the hotel's stylish lounge and sophisticated nightlife venue with wraparound outdoor space. For an outstanding cocktail, I'd recommend the Bond Street Sparkler, with St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur and fresh mint with Champagne. Cheers, fellow dreamers.

DBCoop on August 18, 2010 at 1:10 pm
    • Gee Coop, this is amazing information, and the light scultpture is a very powerful force indeed. I think that Vern's design has probably carried forward the changing patterns of light and incorporated the theme of "light" in the Urban dream condo. I could watch this fiber optic light show every night with a new sense of fascination.

Janzee on August 18, 2010 at 2:37 pm
      • Talk about watching the light show every night—that would be an incredible way to enjoy an evening cocktail in the W Hotel's lounge. I could use the W's renowned Whatever/Whenever service to carry the leather chaise down from the Urban Oasis living room, enjoy a cocktail and the lights as long as I wanted, and then have the staff carry the chaise lounge back up to the unit. By that time though, I'd be so relaxed that they'd have to carry it up with me on it. The only problem I can foresee is when they have to turn it sideways to get it through the door….

DBCoop on August 18, 2010 at 7:02 pm
        • All of the events of that evening would make for great comedy. I can see you glued to that couch with a entourage of harem girls, busboys and then trying to turn that couch around for a smooth entre and landing into the Oasis. What is this a mirage I am seeing or is it Coops flying couch?

Sweet Dreams of Midnight at The Urban Oasis!

    • Hi Coop, I was right in the middle of a BK fish sandwich, and had to run back to tell you a thing or two. I am very happy that you put us at the exact coordinates, on the street where the W Residences sits, and you have so eloquently described this location. I am sort of an urban wannabe at heart, and feel comfort knowing how to get from point A to point B, with an itinerary. Besides the aesthics of the building, I absolutely love your description of the rooftop terrace, a wonderful place to play the violin, have cozy late night get togethers.

  38. Would like to see & meet the Operator (elevator man, right?).
Does he have a job there?

Whomever wins …….. they will see alot of him……. if he exists.

With arms full of bags of groceries and clothing items…… could
use some help to push a FLOOR # button, please.

Does the W Building of New York have one???

RJMstone on August 18, 2010 at 1:34 pm
    • In all of the old movies, the elevator men are nonplused, and always manage to get people where they need to go with what seems like extra arms. Or maybe that was just a trick of film.

Janzee on August 18, 2010 at 2:40 pm
    • I'd need a job – lol

joplays on August 18, 2010 at 8:13 pm
  39. I have a question about actual closest space in the condo. I see alot of storage space in the crisp and clean bedroom, with a bed that you could dive right into, but did you all see a closet so the guys could hang a few suits, and we ladies can look at our succint new wardrobe from Sax Fifth Avenue

Janzee on August 18, 2010 at 2:22 pm
    • There are two single door closets as you enter the condo.

      dreamn_again on August 19, 2010 at 4:00 pm
      • Thanks lovey, the closests offer enough room for a great choice of well chosen outfits for day time and evening wear. Recently I started to mark and label seasonal clothing in cardboard boxes, For the most part the winner could very easily store, everything sleek and succint in the generous storage area.

  40. I love, love, LOVE this place!!!! Have only seen the hallway and bathroom, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! Reminds me of my New York trip last summer. Whoever wins this deluxe apartment will be delighted.

    Vern, you've outdone yourself!

Lessie on August 18, 2010 at 3:52 pm
    • Hello love,

I tried to get to your comment to me tonight about the cheesecake. Yes, it's my mother's that was inspired from NY Wolfies, and little cafe's around the country. She's a mathematician, artist, engineer, designer, but sure can cook. It's a bit of a deviation from the raw food recipe I gave you, high in calories and fat, but oh so good, and once a year would love to entitle myself, friends and family to this wonderful cake that tastes like the sweet air of Vermont, or the city streets of NY.

Janzee on August 29, 2010 at 12:16 am
  41. Vern, one suggestion….you forgot the CHOCOLATE! Please remember chocolate lovers.

Lessie on August 18, 2010 at 3:54 pm
    • I agree Lessie I wanted Lindor Lindt Truffles. What kind of chocolate did you want?

Cami on August 18, 2010 at 5:23 pm
      • Cami, we're twins when it comes to chocolate. Lindor Lindt Truffles, of course! Since there's a Lindor Lindt store in Manhatten, our New York pad is the greatest get-away ever!!!! Would love to be near the theater district. Love, love, love the sights and sounds of New York!

Lessie on August 18, 2010 at 7:04 pm
      • never had one – sounds good – is it dark chocolate? I like dark chocolate.

joplays on August 18, 2010 at 8:29 pm
        • Joplay, Lindor Truffles come in dark and milk chocolate. Heavenly!!!

Lessie on August 18, 2010 at 9:04 pm
        • They do have a dark chocolate flavor. They are usually royal blue wrapped round candies in a gold package. They are better if you keep them in the refrigerator so the smooth melty choc. in the middle doesn't melt too fast. The outside coating is a regular yummy choc.

That was really hard to write, I want chocolate soooo bad.

Cami on August 18, 2010 at 9:07 pm
          • all I have in my fridge is a twix

joplays on August 18, 2010 at 9:22 pm
          • Cami, what melts too fast? When one is gone, I pop in another. Yummy! Love those Lindor Truffles!

Lessie on August 20, 2010 at 11:10 pm
    • Thank you for that chocolate reminder Lessie, winning and chocolate go hand in hand.

Janzee on August 19, 2010 at 4:09 pm
      • Janzee, you have so many comments. Still trying to catch up, especially on your replies to Ed in Oregon.

Lessie on August 20, 2010 at 11:13 pm
        • Having more fun, than a stack of pancakes piled high with Vermont syrup and a side order of chocolate truffles!!

Janzee on August 21, 2010 at 12:41 am
          • That doesn't surprise me at all, Janzee! Continue to have fun as you make an impact on others.

Lessie on August 21, 2010 at 10:56 am
          • Thank you Lessie, it's such a joy to be included in this merriment.

Janzee on August 21, 2010 at 9:22 pm
  42. I love you JWmson, and you would be a great friend because you speak your mind. Given time and more information, you may grow to love this place especially if you were surrounded by an extradinary group of friends. The beauty is that you can keep your place, and have a second residence. This seems to be a continued trend today.

Janzee on August 18, 2010 at 4:16 pm
    • O.K., Janzee. Let's make a deal! If I win the New York digs, I sell it to you on the cheap!!!! We both win and are both HAPPY!!!! :) :):) lololol!!

JWmson on August 18, 2010 at 6:34 pm
      • Okay JWmson it's a deal, but I have a feeling that you may dig your NY dig. In the event that you decide to sell, it may be more than me standing in line for this prime property. It is quite a jewel.

Janzee on August 18, 2010 at 6:52 pm
    • Oh gosh, I was reading there and should have answered here! Check it out! :) :):)

JWmson on August 18, 2010 at 6:38 pm
  43. Hey Vern, where's the red in the bedroom?! A little too much white for me. I need some color! Guess if I won, I'd have to make some changes…..but I'd be happy to do that.

Are there any window coverings? You trying to show my valuables or something?

Lessie on August 18, 2010 at 4:34 pm
  44. I L O V E the "added glamour" of the apartment "as the sun sets and the big lights of the city sparkle in the night sky." Now THAT'S New York in all its beauty!!!!

The winner is in for a super treat! Thanks Vern!!!

Lessie on August 18, 2010 at 5:56 pm
  45. Vern, the carpenter did a great job on the six-foot-tall pedestals. Love how everything is so convenient!

Can you tell I'm sharing with you as I view the photos?

Lessie on August 18, 2010 at 5:59 pm
  46. Dear debragilmour, boomer and Lynn Coggins please come back and take your rightful place on this roster. I love holding a warm place, but we all miss your great sharing information and presence. I have looked at the board I think twice since it's been up, but if it says anything it creates a cadence for whose been posting.

Janzee on August 18, 2010 at 6:28 pm
    • Yes you 3 girls, just because it's summer it's no excuse for taking a vacation, unless there are circumstances which keep you from us. Just know we miss you.

Cami on August 18, 2010 at 9:11 pm
      • Dear Cam, everyone on this blog is leaving a footprint with words and thoughts that have become gold leaves on the HGTV blog. in the Vermont DH, these same footprints after a day of skiing and walking into the mudroom will be super big footprints.

Janzee on August 18, 2010 at 10:51 pm
  47. Hi JWmson, you are right, you dont need a lucky wishbone for all the important things in life, and you described them all. !!!!!!!

Janzee on August 18, 2010 at 8:41 pm
  48. I know I should be better, but all I can think about now are Lindt Truffles and cheesecake. New York City is too alluring for this recovering sweets "melt in your mouth" lover.

Cami on August 18, 2010 at 9:22 pm
  49. Speaking of chicken bones are these the ones you are talking about? http://www.milkandcookies.com/link/98961/detail/

alicesoneysmom on August 18, 2010 at 10:26 pm
    • I saw plenty of chocolate going into the making of those bones. I jarred a memory for the few times I tasted them, but I seem to remember peanut butter.

Janzee on August 18, 2010 at 10:57 pm

        • Chick-o-sticks I remember. Wow, alicesoneysmom you really know how to create great memories.

Lessie on August 20, 2010 at 11:28 pm
    • are they hiring? I love chicken but I don't want my chocolate to taste like chicken – ha

joplays on August 18, 2010 at 11:14 pm
    • I couldn't think of what you were talking about "chicken bones". Then I remembered, I loved them. Only we called then chick o sticks. They were great.

funfordot on August 19, 2010 at 8:30 am
    • Alicesoneysmom, that has got to be the best chicken bones ever! I've never seen or tasted them. Wonder how they compare to southern fried chicken?

Lessie on August 20, 2010 at 11:25 pm
  50. The fact that this hostel is built so close to the Redwood Forest it is worth staying there in the private family area. What transportation do you take up the mountain. Is it driveable?
