Main Floor Magic
Hi all,
I wanted to alert you to my new blog post over on the HGTVPro site. The architect is painting another mental picture of the main floor and its open kitchen, gathering room and annex. Imagine a space that jets out toward the mountain with a curtain wall entirely constructed of glass – my word!

Hi everybloggie,
That view is nature's masterpiece ! It blows me away !!
Happy Dreaming !

can anyone tell me when the sweepstake for dream house 2011 will begin?
Wow, another wall that looks like it isn't there to hold you in and keep you from falling over the edge. I'll check it out.
It seems like HGTV is really testing the scaredy cats of heights lately. I'm not really sure if I have that problem or not, but I'm not about to climb up higher on my roof to find out.
Who needs pictures on the wall with Views like this?
Almost peak color in Stowe from the looks of that picture. Spending Columbus Day Weekend in Vermont should be on your bucket list if you have one, there's no where else in the world where the color becomes so vibrant that it looks like the leaves were dipped in paint pots. When you can see the color orange at night with no moon, that's peak!
Another wonderful photo, Thank you Mary. This DH is quite grand—so many beautiful walls of windows, lots of light, magnificant views—— it has it all.
Fantastic!!
ALSO:
Now HgtvPro has a video to show the "TREES in the home. Go to "Trees as Decorative Art" video.
Good to see Jack again. http://www.hgtvpro.com/hpro/pac_ctnt/text/0,2595,…
Also see how trees on the lot were made into beams for the HGTV Dream Home.
Go to "Hybrid Timber Framing" video. Good to see Jack again.
Putting in big Pella windows. Got to have tool belt like that one on that guy in video Marker #1:02. Never saw one so big and handy. (drool) Wonder who makes it. I just returned a toolbelt that just wasn't what I was looking for. Maybe Santa will listen.
Go to "Mountain Home Construction" video. Good to see Jack again
The tree concept is interesting. So which room do you suppose these trees are residing in?
Think the trees are residing in the dorm room perhaps? That would make it easier to climb up to the top bunks. Toss in a vine or two for a quick exit to the "jungle" floor, and you'd have the perfect kids or young adults room.
Oh, I see, kinda like a new spin on the DeltaTau Chi fraternity Animal House version. Hum, okay.
Hey Everyone(:
It's been a LOOOOONG time since i've posted on here. But, I have been getting on regularly to read all the comments, check out the pictures….and wow. I am blown away! I cannot wait until the virtual tour. I always love reading all your comments. You people are so inspiring! I'm only a sophomore in high school, but I love architecture (I started watching HGTV when I was about 9, while my brother and sister were watching Spongebob) My mom finds it funny that I love houses. (Which I guess is kinda wierd) Buuuuut, Maybe you'll see me in 7 years designing the next Dream Home! (I wish lol)
Well….That's it! And just to keep up the tradition….Can you post some more Time-Lapse Pics, Mary?
-Em
I wish they had waited for peak color in Stowe because I found that photo boring. Much better fall colors here in Michigan and further south through Virginia into North Carolina. And not a bit of water in sight. No lake, river, stream or even a creak. You can have marvelous views without walls of glass. And I dare Linda W. to include a baby grand piano in her decor. Or any piano. What I do love about this home is the living kitchen. I have been waiting for a kitchen like this and I can't wait to see it. Bottom line, this home was built for skiers and I hope a skier wins it. Or me, of course.
Agreed! I love pianos(:
I double design dog dare Linda to put an antique baby grand piano in the Dream Home.
Hi Cami,
I too love music, but perhaps not a good idea to have a grand piano ~ with the high humidity in the summer months, a piano would need to be tuned constantly, unless the home has central air conditioning ?
Interesting Goldie, I do know humidity can be a problem for pianos. I'm wondering what the Von Trapp lodge and the Stowe Mt. Resort and Spruce Peak Arts center does for theirs. A dehumidifier? I don't have that problem here, with central heat and air. Hmmmm, I do hope that isn't a big problem for the area.
I wasn't aware it lost it's tune due to humidity. I guess you are saying it effects the wood, which then puts tension on the strings right? I haven't researched too much, the effects of humidity on pianos obviously.
No problem. Paint a trompe-l'oeil baby grand piano on the wall, and slip a CD in the player. Who's to know? For recitals, just pull a chair up to the wall and play along like a virtuoso. Humidity and tuning issues a thing of the past….
I love a good piece of art too, but where is the fun in playing a piano like that? Come on man, you can do better than that. Just say, well I guess it will have to be a digital baby grand piano, or a dehumidifier, take your pick. With a digital grand piano, anyone can pretend they're playing, perfectly I might add. ; ) However my heart still longs for an old antique piano- restored.
Do I hear a triple design dare???
I'm not on the grand piano crew. Takes up way too much floor space. I would rather have a place to dance.
Omaha: Yes, room to dance is a must have. Maybe just a small keyboard.
—
I hope the fabrics used in furniture and drapes are a good quality, richly colored microfiber. Tough enough to last kids.
What I would give to sit in front of that window listening to Time after Time sung by Frank Sinatra. Hopefully I wont be heart broken come next march when someone else has won the place of my dreams!
Thanks, MARY. A beautiful display of nature's glory. After reading the hgtvpro blog post, if I were to take a tour of this home, I'd "annex" myself to Mr. Rousselle's favorite room and they'd never get me back out of there!
And just imagine, I almost clocked out of the blogs this evening without catching MARY's new blog posts. Why it's unthinkable! Now I'll be dreaming of those incredible views and autumn colors. Buenas Snow-shoe-s, bloggers.
I few people keep mentioning new videos. For some reason I couldn't see the lower level video, but the one after that one talks about bringing in natural branches and tree timbers to create the adirondack type style in the home. I absolutely love love the branches and timbers they found to incorporate into the home and placed them in just the right places to look like they grew right up through the home. That thrills me to no end, I feel like going and getting a tree to place inside my home, it wouldn't really go with my decor, but it, makes me want to scream let me come see this home so I can see and touch and feel it all for myself. I have no hope in winning so please find something for me to do to help, and I'll be there. I'll pay my own way and work for free, just let me see all the beautiful natural pieces you've brought into the home.
And while I'm there I'll sneak in a piano when Jack and Linda aren't looking. ; )
And put up bird houses and set up webcams so we can watch the snow fall while the birds hunt for their seeds and stay dry for a spell.
I'm free after Halloween, nobody even has to know I was there. Just let me come and do something.
Oh heck I'm free now. Take me away from here and let me help Linda decorate. I promise I won't tell.
I wish they would do the branch feature all over the house, but unfortunately it looks as though it's just the one room as they kept popping back to the same place in the video.
Repeat from above:
I think both the dorm room (that's were the video shows them) and the family room. Both of these rooms showed the "tree outline" on the blue prints in one of the past videos.
Dear Mary, I've been dreaming about these colors all day,and they are magnificent. Before putting all my attention on the UO,and Stowe DH, I wanted to offer a special thanks to the DIY Blog Cabin:Flash forward to autumn 2011. The Blog Cabin 2010 has been won, and it’s a keeper. As a backdrop in Sullivan New York, the summer crowds have left, and the holidayers haven’t arrived. Autumn means the Feast of Gennaro in Little Italy, baseball, the U.S. Open, Halloween, and The New York Marathon. In preparation and celebration, of the community October Fest, the family has been preparing a deer stew, punkin patch pie, and chock full of apple fritter critters. The kids have been writing their own little skits in secret, because it’s a surprise. After a full day of playing basketball, navigating obstacle hunts, canvas bag races, the evening has just begun. All the neighbors have decided to get together, including some local “kitchen band celebrities” with their fiddles in hand, for a night of country square dancing. The best part of the evening, when everybody has their bellies full, and is red cheeked from dancing in squares, and circles, is when the announcement for the kids production is made. “Gather round ye friends, family, and visitors from near and far, we are about to present the greatest show”. Of course, your kids who are the stars of the show, come out in their costumes on a green make-shift stage, with all of the material, paper bags, feathers, googley eyes, and stars from a bottle.
What will be remembered on this night, as autumn fades to winter, is the wonderful fun had by all recorded in your album for keeps.
Hi Janzee , A crisp autumn good morning to you. Great story. Brought back so many beautiful memories of when my children were small—and way, way back when, in the one room school I attended grade school in, in a tiny rural farming community. Thanks for sharing this wonderful vision with us. LOL
Dear MeKhazSimi, thanks for the autumn greeting. You are sooo lucky to have experienced the way back then, one school room class. All the stories that you tell to your kids, nieces, nephews and neighbors, must be priceless. Those halcyon days were memories, that can be revitalized in down home communites that offer families opportunities for neighborhood fun and community closeness. Sullivan NY, Stapleton Colorado and Stowe Vermont each have a "village" way of looking at things.
Love the way you compose Missy Janzee! Mesmerizing!
Are you related to gals Nora Ephron & Delia Ephron who produced "You've Got Mail "?
They write well too.
I find myself with hungry eyes and licking my lips getting ready to read your delicious words. Everyone here loves to read what you write. Tell us tales in your own unique way. Keep it up Auntie Janzee!
Wowii Stone, I have heard some of the greatest compliments of a lifetime on this site. I share them with you, and mirror them right back atcha kid. Although I am not related to the Ephron's, I would love to give them a big hug, because I think they're terrif. I feel thankful, humbled and love this group because of who you all are. A year ago, I had a hard time getting up in the morning, I would stay up at night pacing and walking on a stone path asking for the old enthusiasm, creativity, and leadership projects to reemerge. I asked to be given guidance so that I could be helpful to others, and offer support and healing words. It's amazing when you put your muscle grease to something, there is a postive energy that thrusts you foward. When I got on the site, I was welcomed, like everyone else, and slowly but surely the oats started to come back because I felt like I was home. We have all been through times in our lives where the steam, turns to distilled water, but gratefully I am beginning to find the well spring again bubbling up on new ground. Thank you Stone for your hunger, I come from a family that loves to feed our friends.
Wow, Janzee, I have been only following UO and Blog Cabin blogs because of time limitations, and rarely see your posts on those sites. Now I am going to have to check in here more often to read your posts!! Don't want to miss them… Ms. Cami has the wild imagination that takes us on adventures like Mr. Toad's wild ride; you could write perfect fantasies of imagined families enjoying the dream/blog/green/oasis residences……….Thanks for your nostalgia and talent to write it all down….I am going through that "distilled water" phase myself just now; you give me hope!
Dear LLColeman, thank you very much for the wonderrful compliment. I had to learn that water is water, whether it's distilled or not, and wherever you are at this moment, you gotta just take time, to love yourself just the way you are, feeling and doing. An itch, a pain, a thought, a situation, we can always find a river that runs through it, and acceptance-looking at something squarely and straight on is key. A support system, which could be family or friends, is a requirement. People that can soothe your soul, and feed you with the liquid that queen honey bees get fed in the hive wets your taste buds, and makes you feel like you want to smell all the beautiful flowers. I know that sounds a little esoteric, but once upon a time, I felt a little gloomy and creating a positive alternative felt softer, and tried the queen bee thing. This site, for all of our connections, and through the wings of imagination, I am now feeling that I can accomplish much. And much could be the simple things in life, like paying bills, creating an idea for a business, sitting in your backyard and writing a grateful list, volunteering, investigating alternative nutrition, saying a prayer to G-D, going to church or synogogue, hugging your self, smiling in the mirror, and the list goies on.
I see so many scenes in my head that your words create. Some scenes flash-stop and become "Norman Rockwell" type story-telling pictures ……. and dear Janzee, also your images give us glimpes of full "movie-type scenes" with your happy and warm visions.
I feel refreshed now and stroll over to rocking chairs on a patio under a huge willow tree. There is a warm sweet breeze today. I rock and hear your words and smile. My daughter made a wonderful rhubarb cobbler the other day. Tasting its sweet taste with just a dab of cool whip on it. Life is good.
We are a movie on this site, aren't we, precious RJMstone. The scene you describe reminds me of the Robert Lewis Stevenson poem:
The Swing
How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!
Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside–
Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown–
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down
How wonderful the taste of fresh rhubarb cobbler, that your children make. Nothing could be sweeter than those willowy dreams under the tickly feathers of a soft willow tree, and the kindness of your spirit. As a side note, the willows do whisper don't they? And I can just picture you my friend. My grandma, who learned to speak Yiddish from my grandpa, would say "Halash dine Heartz". Which meant a pleasure to the heart and soul for 120 years!!!
Good morning everybloggie !
SydeyNK …Yes, it's only human and natural to feel a little bit heartbroken each year, when the winner of the DH is announced and it's not you. But hope springs eternal, and you never know…one year it could be you who is the lucky one in forty four million entries ! I am certainly dreaming big this year !
I just saw a lone duck flying south for the winter, he sounded so melancholy, and had obviously become separated from his flock, buthe was honking and flapping and doing his utmost, so if a duck can be positive, so can we !! lol. I love rootin' for the Underdog, I wonder what percentage of the population roots for the struggling Underdog and who roots for Mister Successful ? lol.
On a fun note… I think this new spa therapy would be right up our Bloggers' Alley…Cryotherapy Sauna !
( If it doesn't actually make us cry, it'll certainly bring tears to our eyes ! lol. It gives an icy blast of minus 166 degrees F. Invigorating ? I'll bet ! Bbbrrr…
Stay Toasty warm :O)

Oh I dont know about that kind of spa treatment Goldie, Ive lived my whole life in a place where winter rarely gets below 30 degrees and never snows, and where 110 degree summers are common. I hate cold! However if I could live in a house like that I think I would learn to love the cold!
Thank you for the beautiful picture of Mount Mansfield, Mary — if the view from that wall of glass is half as breathtaking as this it will be spectacular!
Here is another view of Mount Mansfield with colors that are almost unreal:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/skip_shepard/3985029…
Be sure to check out the slideshow as well — what a glorious showcase of autumn brilliance! All too soon the landscape will be just a vast expanse of white, so I'm enjoying the colors while I can!
Hi CplusE Thanks for sharing the link. So beautiful. This time of year always seems to inspire a feeling of preparing for the brisk autumn/winter feel of the outdoors, and the looking forward to warm, cozy evenings nestled indoors with gatherings of family and friends. It's wonderful isn't it? LOL
Brilliant colors! Digital photography is amazing.
Thanks for the link..love the slide show… I hope LilB , Mary Mead and other barn lovers see the photo of the round, red barn in the slide show . .THE PHOTOGRAPHY IS GORGEOUS!
The interesting thing about "mental" pictures, is, I'll bet no two are alike. Personally I'm more of a "visual" type person, I'll have to wait for the pictures, because each time I read the architect's description, i get a different 'mental" picture! It'll be worth the wait, do doubt!
Good morning AnneEliseSouth, I'm a "visual" person also. Sometimes it's like rewriting a script. Each time you read the description—-you can option to place a different slant on it. ha You're right—-This Stowe DH is going be incredible! LOL
I just deleted all I wrote so here I go again. I am in Atlanta and I am trying to get this off before I
leave the continent. I don't fly so I travel by RV, train, ship etc. I will try to read when I am on land.
So we have been given permission to go see the 2010 DH house but Myra is busy with packing.
Route 14 is not very lovely so I am disappointed in it. Now inside it begins to get better but the
community center is small and not finished. No pool yet! On we go on a slightly curvey road but
fairly perpandicular to the Tourquoise Trail. There it is finally at the end of the cul de sac.
I see the gorgious metal Indian and jump out to take pictures. I had already spied Myra looking
out of the guest bedroom window. I had not realized how vulnerable people inside would be. You
can see in from almost everywhere. We passed only a few houses before we reached "The House"
!
You have me on tenterhooks here — continue your story please!!!
2) After taking those pictures I went toward the front door – ee gads, you can see everything
through the house. Either awsome or you better make sure you are dressed at all times. I rang
the doorbell and saw that behind the bell house material was gone as if the house was really
old or hundreds of people had used it!!! I had dreamed since the morning of Myra opening this
door with her big wide smile and I would hug her and tell her that she should read all the
comments left behind for her to read. Myra didn't come. I thought that maybe she was embar-
rassed about having to leave so soon. She has nothing to be ashamed of, it just showshow hard
it is to win a home. There were probably lots of reasons she had to leave. Her one neighbor was
so far from her that she was out in the wilderness. Obviouslly when some things were not there
when our own bloggers were their because I am sure they would have mentioned this before.
Hi SandyLA, sounds like you are having quite a journey atop your eagle perch from your RV. What a great way to see the country and travel. Sounds like you didn't have quite the experience you dreamed about, but did you have a chance to experience the amazing New Mexico faun and flora. I always ask people if they had time to dine at the neighborhood cafes, buy any pottery, or special piece of jewelry, "have another life" experience, fall in love, wink back at the blinking stars, head up the mountains. Like you when I tour an area, I am always like for a sequestered piece of land, that would be very private, and for my use only. That type of property does exist, but takes a terrific amount of research to investigate the deed restrictions. If you scout a planned community, chances are that down the road you will have neigbors. In one example my family bought in Kino Springs Az, years ago,and the land butted up against a national forest. It still looks the same way today. In Yuma Az., I was the first one in a subdevelopment, took care of all the builders orange trees, and today years later, it's all built up with folks on either side of the house. That's progress
Maybe Linda will choose some items from this New England-based company:
http://www.companyc.com/assets/catalog/company_c_…
I love this fall catalog — the colors are so appropriate for the season! I discovered this company when checking out the shopping in Stowe (one of the stores sells some of their items) and fell in love with it. I even found a Company C quilt at a greatly discounted price at our local Home Goods store and snatched it up!
3) There were lot numbers up. There were 173 lots available and only 15 houses had been built. Some
lots had been purchased but not yet built on. When we originally saw the house on the lot, it appeared
as if you were alone there and nothing was mentioned eventhough questions were asked. Well there is
going to be a house on either side of her. In fact she is the first house on the cul-de-sac with oh I forget
now, maybe five other houses on the cul-de-sac which was just enough room for the RV to turn around.
Myra's lot is like a diamond shape with a point towards the road (snipped off). The road in front allows
our 30' RV to park at the curb (anyone see the curb?) and that is all the space there is for her. The lot
widens out and then goes back to the other end of the diamond falling down a cliff. There are three
houses around her so just maybe 30' backs onto wilderness. I never imagined houses so close to the
home. Pity, Sad, Disappointment. Now I cannot trust or believe in what they say about what is real.
So the Blog Cabins with this year 5 acres and next year 16 are better placed.
Are you going to post photos on a website?
Sorry Omaha, no time and don't know how.
Dear SandyLA, Thanks for your view point and information about the 2010 Dream Home. So wonderful to get info regarding these beautiful homes. I guess it just goes to show you how much we create things in our own minds. They really crop the photos and show us what they want us to see. Hollywood!
Have a good trip!

I think as the season progresses in Vermont, along with progress at the Dream Home itself, we're going to not only see some stunning scenery but some very exciting interior videos as well. And then comes load-in day. Wow, the fun never stops!
Tell us more Coop! Will be very interesting to see the design expert, Linda Woodrum's way of decorating this amazing home. Each one of us has our own ideas of how we would want the Dream Home to look.
Were you talking about the Trapp Lodge, or the Stowe Mt. Resort?
Yes go and enjoy some time there, sounds like a lovely time to go too.
I love the idea of the walls of windows that are in this home. The view is breathtaking. I will never get tired of looking out my windows when I win it. Thank you HGTV for building it for me.
The Green Home blog was just updated with new photos. The landscaping is complete. Lots of trees and shrubs, no lawn.
I hope those big comfy chairs in the Annex are swivel ones. For looking out at the scenery by day, and then turn around to hear skiing tales by the fire in the evening.
or scary bear tales….
Ha ha ha ha….. oh my!
Yes, there are bears in Vermont, Virginia!! When do those bears go to sleep for the Winter?
Coop, I would truly hate to meet up with a bear without a weapon. Sure hope there are no beehives with honey or berry bushes around the Dream Home.
Yes, HgtvPro has new Blogs…..

"Form Follows Function on the Main Floor" SAYS=
"The main floor of HGTV Dream Home 2011 has been designed to accommodate a family’s active lifestyle, while maximizing mountain views. “As we walk through the front door we are in the entry area: It’s a linear arrangement of the front entry, a powder room and a mud room,” explains architect Paul Robert Rousselle, whose floor plan follows a natural progression as family and friends step from outside in, strip off snow gear, freshen up, gather refreshments and regroup.
As one advances from the front entry into the main-floor living space, the 10-foot vaulted ceiling will rise to 14 feet. Rousselle designed partitions to partially divide spaces yet allow light and “energy” to filter through. Walls, not quite ceiling height, will also lend an air of mystery: “There’s always going to be a notion of something lying beyond,” he adds.
cont'd.
cont'd.
Timbers that support the linear spine of the home will mark the entrance to the kitchen. “We are going to call this the ‘living kitchen,’” adds Rousselle, “because it transcends just eating and cooking. It’s a place of hangout; it’s a place of congregation and conversation. We really wanted to create a place where three-fourths of the time spent will be in this great space. You are situated so that even the chef himself will have fantastic views.”
cont'd.

From the kitchen, traffic will flow into what Rousselle calls an “interconnected, open-air volume” composed of the gathering room and the annex. The annex, Rousselle’s favorite room, will offer what the architect promises to be “staggering” views. A 13-foot-wide by 16-foot-high curtain wall will provide a front-row seat to the changing seasons and dramatic weather conditions, from summer thunderstorms to winter’s heaviest snow squalls. “It’s almost like a peninsula of glass,” he adds. “And you jet away from the building proper and you really get to experience the greater degree of the mountain sense and different lighting on the mountain at different times of day. I think it’s very experiential.”

i love this house. i am on here everyday looking at the same pictures everyday. you make my day when there are new ones. keep them coming guys your doing a great job. can't wait to see the front of the house and even the inside, with wall.
Since Myra could not keep the house what happens to it? Does it go up for sale like any other house, furnished and with all the other bells and whistles?
I so love the weather change taking place at our dream home. KC is hot, then cool, then cooler, then hot, then hot then windy then windy and hot and mercy, just let it be cool for deck dining or cold and snowy….I am ready.

Im a disabled vetran and hope to some day have my own home. I really wanted the dream home 2010, But it just was not my turn to be a great winner. 40 million entries is a lot. I am a hunter, but its not easy to go hunting from a wheelchair. Maybe if i were the winner i could go hunting out my front door. You just never know. Any one can win. Im 33 years old and im single , and never been married, But i have two god sons who are my nefews. I also have a big family who are verry clost to me. I am also big into recycling. I do recycle erverthing if it can be recycled, However i onle get paid to recycle aluminum cans. The price of cans is way down from last year. They are paying 17 cents compared to last years 63. Im rather new with the computer, and im having a bit of a problem entering this sweepstakes for thed past week. I really wont to make sure that i get my entries into the sweepstakes. I dont think a piano would look good in the 2011 dream home. I dont have anything against pianos or people who play them. Im a active LDS/morman and i enjoy the piano , and organ in church.
