HGTV Dream Home 2011 Tournament of Roses® Parade Float

HGTV will join this year’s list of participants in the 122nd Tournament of Roses Parade with its own float, a replica of HGTV Dream Home 2011. The completed float will make its debut during HGTV’s live, commercial-free coverage of the parade on Saturday, January 1, 2011, at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT. In addition, HGTV will air a half-hour special, The Building of the HGTV Dream Home Float, immediately preceding the parade.

The float reflects the rustic appeal of HGTV Dream Home 2011 and features Stowe-area attractions including rolling hills, winding roads and ski slopes punctuated by snow-tipped evergreens. Vibrant autumn leaves and a real water stream for fishing and canoeing also are included on the spectacular float.

Stay tuned: We will be posting a rendering of the float in the next few days!

  1. Wow, That's exciting. I bet if you look in one of the windows of the rendering on the float, you'll see a little person on a computer blogging! Maybe they'll get Super Fan to be on the float waving and charming everyone with her great smile!

AnneEliseSouth on October 8, 2010 at 2:39 pm
    • Could that person seen through the window of the Dream Home float be MARY, who, multitasking while driving the float, is also busy posting new blog threads online for us? Just as long as she's not on her cellphone and driving at the same time, she should be fine. Driving and dialing is illegal in California.

DBCoop on October 8, 2010 at 9:42 pm
      • That's okay Coop. Nobody would be able to see her texting in the car under the float. Cell phones while driving are illegal here in Oregon too. The law doesn't make much difference though. About every fifth car going by my house has someone texting or talking on their phone. Last week we had a person plow into the back of a parked car while they were texting! OUCH!!

  2. Wow the Parade of the 2011 HGTV Dream Home. That is taking the Parade of Homes concept up a few notches. Only HGTV could do that. We will be waiting for our HGTV Dreams to float right by us as we put in our very first entry on January 1st.

Cami on October 8, 2010 at 4:20 pm
  3. A real water stream! Will there be fish in the stream? LOL! Being a real football idiot, I can't remember where the Rose Bowl is, but I think it is in southern California — if so, those Californians will get a kick out of seeing a Vermont landscape smack dab in the middle of their mild, dry climate. I might actually watch the parade just to see the float!

  4. How amazing is that? More exciting news from HGTV—a Dream Home float in the Rose Parade! What will MARY think of next?

I can imagine Dream Home 2011 floating down Pasadena's Colorado Boulevard among rolling hills and vibrant autumn colors, set off by snow-tipped evergreens. Sounds heavenly.

I'll volunteer to man the canoe if needed. I could even wear my coonskin hat and buckskins to set the proper Green Mountains of Vermont frontiersman tone. Don't leave the starting line without me!

DBCoop on October 8, 2010 at 4:45 pm
    • Now wait a minute. Come to think of it, Jack T would make the perfect Vermont frontiersman for the Dream Home float. Maybe Cami could suit up in suitable skiwear and pose as one of the skiers on those Vermont mountain slopes?

DBCoop on October 8, 2010 at 9:47 pm
      • I think Jack would be perfect anywhere on the float, along with the whole team. Cami however, would probably get motion sickness and fall off, unless she had a sitdown job.

Now that Katy brought up the red convertable, I think I would rather sit in the back and look pretty and wave.

I wouldn't mind sitting and waving from the new giveaway car either.

Cami on October 9, 2010 at 12:14 am
    • Hey Coop, can we join you, or at least have front row seats in the blogging section.

Janzee on October 11, 2010 at 11:24 pm
    • Coop, I would love to see you in a coonskin hat and buckskins. Mary, wouldn't you like to see Coop on the float as the Vermont frontiersman? He's volunteered so give him a call.

  5. How exciting! A Dream Home Float……….who came up with this brilliant idea? I will be anxiously awaiting to see what this float is going to look like. But since I do not watch football…….I am wondering…….is the Rose Bowl game also going to take place on Jan. 1st? Right after the parade?

SummerSilver on October 8, 2010 at 4:56 pm
    • Aha, a fellow football idiot! I decided to look up the info — the game happens after the parade:

      http://www.tournamentofroses.com/events/2011-Para

See how much you can learn by following the blogs? A very educational experience can be had here!

      • Good to know…….thanks!

SummerSilver on October 9, 2010 at 1:38 pm
  6. That was so thoughtful of HGTV to bring the entire 2011 Dream Home to it's West Coast fans. Well, they are even bringing a little of Stowe Mountain Resort with them. How cool is that.

I can't get over the fact that the Parade of Homes idea, became a Home in a Parade. That is giving the Dream Home -legs, or in this case wheels.

Cami on October 8, 2010 at 5:25 pm
  7. How crazy is it, to take a whole family to the Rose Bowl Parade? Probably more stress than we can handle. The usual parade problems, where to park? Where to plant yourself? Fighting the crowds.

Would everyone along the Parade route have to have tickets? Or is that just for the grandstands?

I can already tell that would add a lot to the cost of the Southern Cal. family attraction, Vacation budget.

Cami on October 8, 2010 at 5:29 pm
    • Like your different avatar! Only bleachers cost money. If you come the night before, you usually
can find parkinf for a few dollars. Then you bring your sleeping bags and foods and warm warrm
clothes and camp out over night. Lots of families do it. Just sleep on the sidewalk like the rest
of the fun guys. My reccomendation is right in front of the – oh my gosh I have forgotten the
name – it has a large red rose on the side of it for the day. Does anyone else remember? Have
fun, we did. OK The Simon Museum!!!

  8. This might answer questions you may have about attending The Tournament of Roses Parade. http://www.tournamentofroses.com/index.asp

    FAQ. From website

    How soon can I arrive?

Curbside camping on the parade route is allowed beginning at noon the day before the parade.

LOL that made me laugh, I can't imagine a whole family sleeping on the sidewalk overnight.

The following link is Frequently asked questions about the Parade. This small town girl (me) finds it all very amusing…. http://www.tournamentofroses.com/roseparade/parad

"Who are the people in the white suits and what do they do?"
Hey Coop your men in white suits will be away helping with the parade all day on Jan 1st. so no need to avoid them on that day… Nice to have a break from the worry the men in white will show up at your door. Huh?

Cami on October 8, 2010 at 5:34 pm
    • Cami: Low blow to Coop. And I thought you were friends. hehe. We know the white suits clean up sh-t. And Coop will reply in his kind and clever way. Dear small town girl, camping out overnight happens all the time. In front of a store that is offering unbelievable bargains. In front of the ticket office where sporting events are on sale and the same for top star entertainers. Or getting a good spot to watch the fire works over the Detroit river. I watch the Rose Parade every year with or without a hangover. Football only when Michigan is playing. Seems they have always lost but the band is marvelous. This year is special. I will stand up and applaud when the Dream Home float passes by.

Katydiddle on October 8, 2010 at 9:03 pm
      • Yeah I've always thought camping out overnight for something was the dumbest thing a person could do. Even dumber camping out with 5 kids and a cranky, but wise "why are we doing this?" Husband.

I think I would rather buy tickets to sit in the stands, but then parking is $30.00 so it all adds up to an expensive vacation, when we've already planned to spend 2 weeks touring the usual S. Cal attractions.

Katy the men in white suits are constantly after Coop but not the kind that clean up after the horses.
Probably only during Dream Home clue season though. That must be why I haven't seen them lately myself.

Cami on October 9, 2010 at 12:26 am
    • Talk about the camping out part, you better believe that the crowds form early, not for a seat curbside at the parade, but for a spot to lay their sleeping bags. Hundreds and hundreds, thousands of people swamp the town and the parade route for the best overnight curbside bedding! It's an adventure not for the faint of heart.

However, if you decide you and your family are up to the challenge, Cami, be sure we get detailed and timely reports from the frontline.

DBCoop on October 8, 2010 at 9:37 pm
    • I wouldn't worry about sleeping very much Cami. Most of the people stay up partying. They are pretty much wasted by the time the parade goes by.

EdinOregon on October 8, 2010 at 11:53 pm
      • I already figured out what the curb scene would be and look like, so I abandoned that idea real quick.

I would just like the chance to meet the Dream Home Team, since I know I'll never win.

Cami on October 9, 2010 at 12:29 am
        • Maybe Jack would sign autographs Cami!
(That's if he is on the float…. )
Maybe Mr.& Mrs. Scripps will be there. This must be a huge year for them!!!!
Just look at all of the HGTV activity!

(Or did a young son take over the HGTV helm?
Alot of changes recently! But roaringly GREAT ones!! :) LOL )

RJMstone on October 9, 2010 at 4:08 pm
        • Wonder who HGTV is hiring to put the flowers and seeds onto the FLOAT!

I'm sure many would love to have that job!
Cami, can you find out where to apply for that job? We are curious.

RJMstone on October 9, 2010 at 4:15 pm
          • I'm thinking they already have it covered. There are probably a lot of employees already employed at Scripps who would just love an excuse to be sent to Cal. to work on the float.

However I offered to pay my own way and work for free. LOL

Cami on October 9, 2010 at 4:41 pm
  9. Hey Mary/HGTV, How about a meet and greet with your West Coast fans the day before or after the Parade??? I was hoping the whole Dream Home Building Team would be there.

Be sure and let us know soon, so we can plan our vacations accordingly.

I promise to regain and retain my composure upon seeing all the HGTV celebs. Even Jack Thomasson.
I just realized I can't make that same promise if I should see Jamie Durie. Hopefully I'll have my strong studmuffin of a husband by my side to remind me not to accost poor Jamie Durie, and to remind me I'm already married to a tall dark and handsome man. I just love Jamie's accent.
Do you all think it's ok to like another man just for his accent?…. And landscaping skills?…. And his eyes? Ok I'll stop there.. (He has a twinkle in his eyes, I can't help it)

  10. Hi everybloggie,

What a brilliant idea to have an HGTV float of the Dream Homein The Rose Parade !!! I know that HGTV do a lot for fundraisers and support non profits, which is very generous of them. I for one would certainly purchase a calendar, if one is ever made available, as part of a fund raising effort by HGTV.
Imagine: " Building Dreams, Friendships and Memories" on the cover of the calendar, and then inside, each calendar month could feature the present and past Dream Homes, plus pages featuring Jack, Linda and the whole Dream Team :O)
Dreaming of Snow in Stowe :O)

    • Maybe we'll see you there Alice.

Cami on October 9, 2010 at 12:38 am
  13. Cami: I don't think you'll find Coop paddling a canoe or riding a horse. Just keep your eyes peeled for someone in a red convertible. Now that I've blown his cover, he'll probably be so covered with roses we will never see the the real Coop. If only he would have the courage to stand up and wave. I tried to call him but the Mayor's office said he wasn't in.

Katydiddle on October 8, 2010 at 8:28 pm
    • Unless we're having a heat wave come January, Katydiddle, you may see the red convertible, but you probably won't see much of me bundled up behind the wheel in my winter gear against the cold morning breeze.

DBCoop on October 8, 2010 at 9:28 pm
      • I was thinking Coop could drive the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway car. Do we know what kind of car that's going to be?? That certainly has to go along with the mini Dream Home, don't you think?
I wonder if they'd let a few bloggers ride with him?

Cami on October 9, 2010 at 12:10 am
        • Come to think of it, I HAVE had exerience in the parade realm before. (No, Katydiddle, not as one of the white suit guys.) Should I send in my resumé to MARY? How many bloggers do you think they could pack into one vehicle? I guess that all depends on the size of the vehicle and the size of the bloggers! No problem for me, I'm used to squeezing into those narrow airline seats and sitting virtually motionless for hours. In this case, however, constant waving would be required—which on a plane is only necessary in order to get the flight attendants attention when the person next to you has just spilled tomato juice down your pant leg…. (Flight attendants are usually notorious for ignoring the call button.)

DBCoop on October 9, 2010 at 11:15 am
          • I think if a person is planning to be in a parade they should work on their upper body strength for a few months, and practice the classic parade wave for at least 2 hours per day. Nothing worse than seeing worn out "too tired to wave" parade participants towards the end of the Parade. Which reminds me…. In my neck of the woods, out in the sticks beyond the tules/toolies, the parades come with candy. Is that allowed at the Rose Parade? If so, not waving towards to end of the parade is almost as bad as running out of candy before the end.

Cami on October 9, 2010 at 12:57 pm
  14. Thanks for the promotional push, Cami. Though I'm not that far from the lovely old town of Pasadena, I've never aspired to brave the crowds and cold January mornings to view the parade in person. Watching from the comfort of home seems more inviting, especially when they give you those aerial shots of the floats. However, with the HGTV Dream Home float in the parade, I might be motivated to give an in-person appearance.

I wonder if MARY will be there in the wee hours of the morning New Years Day, pasting flower petals onto the float right up to the last minute?

DBCoop on October 8, 2010 at 9:24 pm
    • Hey Dream Home float team, if you need some help with the float just give me a call. ; ) I'm a decorator and have mechanic-will travel..

Cami on October 9, 2010 at 12:17 am
    • Coop, what's a little cold? If you're going to watch the parade from the comfort or your home, how will you ever endure Stowe winters? Can't remember the exact amount of snow Stowe receives, but I'm sure that much snow and freezing temps wouldn't matter once you're having fun. Personally, I'll see you INSIDE the Dream Home where it's warm.

Lessie on October 19, 2010 at 11:57 pm
      • Exactly, Lessie. Endure Stowe winters? I'll be warming my toes with the radiant heat flooring in the Dream Home. Of course, I'd be watching folks enjoying all of those winter activities outside the windows of my Stowe home. I'd share in the fun vicariously, all while drinking my hot chocolate and staying nice and toasty warm.

Building a snowman or having a snowball fight? No problem—just hire a snow-making machine some nice summer day, set it up in the front yard, and crank'er up! Instant snow, and with some quick handywork, Frosty the Snowman…at least for an hour or two before he melts away into the forest. B)

RIGHT…. What will Mary think up next? ………………………..
HGTV on-line DREAM HOME video game??
How about a video game for this Vermont Dream Home? What anniversary is this?
We could virtually ski from and to the DH, ride the gondolas, ride a zip-line, explore a cave, rock climb, snowmobile, etc., etc., etc. Sounds like buckets of fun!! Didn't they have video games on here before to play around with? Yes!

RJMstone on October 9, 2010 at 4:29 pm
    • How about a HGTV Dream Home dollhouse? Complete with Linda Woodrum doll, Jack Thomason doll, and a whole lot of furniture, and accessories.
It could have the prize vehicle, the winning family dolls, and a Super Fan doll complete with camera! Oh, just imagine the possibilities! Hours of play fun, and you might even let the kids play with it!

AnneEliseSouth on October 10, 2010 at 10:17 am
      • Great idea…and then folks could put their Dream Home dollhouses on Rate My Space! However, be careful about letting the kids play with the cans of paint, or you may end up with a real live Color Splash makeover right in your very own home…all without any help whatsoever from the show's talented host, David Bromstad!

      • A Super Brilliant Idea ! ! !
. . . . . . . a Spruce Peak HGTV Dream Home dollhouse! Complete with a whole lot of furniture, and accessories to match the way its decorated.

(Wonder if the very intelligent people at HGTV have already started crafty dollhouse furniture makers on this job?) What a valuable collectors item it would be.

P.S. Hope the underneath platform for the dollhouse includes some of the outside entertainment areas. Wouldn't it be cool if a kid added a small treehouse near the Dream Home dollhouse some day on its platform! Maybe a girl's brother would build her a treehouse and zipline if she lets him play with the dollhouse some times. LOL (BRINGING FAMILIES TOGETHER & MAKING MEMORIES)

  23. Hey everyone you do know what these floats cost right? The Lions Club International organization has a yearly float (when they announce voting for the best float representing a non- profit please vote for us.) It costs anywhere from 250,000-500,000 dollars.

OmahaLady on October 10, 2010 at 10:25 am
    • Oh no! I hope that HGTV is not spending all of the Dream Home winner's cash prize on the Parade of Roses float!

DBCoop on October 10, 2010 at 10:38 am
      • I think they are putting the Dream Home cash prize in a display case on the float which will be held by a beautiful model from Deal or no Deal. How else will they show the dough. I suppose there may be a few scoundrels in the crowd thinking 'Steal or no Steal'.

Cami on October 10, 2010 at 11:22 am
        • Lead us not into temptation, Cami, but deliver us from the idea that if we were on the Dream Home float with all that dough, we could make a quick "stop" at our bank's ATM to make a "little" cash deposit—into our account….

Of course, HGTV wouldn't actually have to have the cash on hand, just an oversized check, like on the televised Winner's Surprise program that the host has the lucky winner hold up to the camera. Let's see, if you're on the float, Cami, holding up one end of the check, you'll need to recruit another female blogger to hold up the other.

DBCoop on October 10, 2010 at 12:38 pm
          • Hum, I might be willing to volunteer to become the "Lttle Old Lady from Pacadena" in a sleeping bag two days before the parade—for a percentage of this proposed scheme, maybe. ha

MeKhazSimi on October 10, 2010 at 2:06 pm
          • Which scheme MeKhazSimi, holding one side of the check, or Deal and Steal???

Cami on October 10, 2010 at 2:40 pm
          • Holding one side of the check scheme—-sounds like the "safe choice". ha

MeKhazSimi on October 10, 2010 at 2:52 pm
          • Once again.. If I were standing on the float they would have to fasten me securely to the float or I may get dizzy and fall off. LOL, Maybe they could put me in a harness ready to ascend the mountain. How do you think that would look?? While holding one side of the check.

            I'm guessing not quite right. ; )

Although trying to climb the mountain as the float rounds the corner could be fun. Weeeee

Cami on October 10, 2010 at 2:36 pm
          • Weeeeeeeeeeeis right! Great visual. Lots of LOL and luck with this one.

MeKhazSimi on October 10, 2010 at 2:56 pm
          • The harness is a great idea, Cami. They could have you winched up and securely fastened on to the roof of the Dream Home, as you hang over the side to paste on any flower petals that might have fallen from the trim.

However, as to the weeeeeeeee part, hanging off one of the float's "mountain cliffs" while rounding a corner could be hazardous to your health, especially if you end up wrapped around a traffic light pole.

DBCoop on October 10, 2010 at 4:19 pm
          • LOL, You know how much I love a good roof top scene. Now wouldn't anything gone awry thrill the crowds.

I'm sure the thrill of awry isn't the effect that HGTV is aiming for, but so much fun to blog about.

Hey, when trying to impress the judges at a parade it's all about the trim. Having me up there keeping it in pristine condition is a good idea. ; ) If ya aint got trim ya aint got no outline. No outline, no form. No form, no substance. Without substance, ya aint got no float.

Maybe someone should contact HGTV and tell them to mind and refine their trim.

  24. This is a wonderful surprise! I'm obviously a litle behind with all this new info—but that's par for the course. Beautiful title for the float, and maybe the Dream Team will fall so in love with "the West" they won't be able to resist returning to stake out a location for the next DH.

I actually watched the entire parade last year——because there was an "Oregon Invasion" that took place right after the parade—-in the Rose Bowl Stadium.

Twenty years ago, the stake our your claim on the parade route—-would have been on my "things to experience" list——today? Not so much. For the most part, it's more like "things to experience—-with indoor amenitites included." ha

    • You just reminded me of something… A few popular television shows I like, that have always been located in NYC or DC have branched out to include a Los Angeles version. Maybe the UO is going to Los Angeles. Going West Coast seems to be a TV trend. They have also reincarnated Hawaii 5-0. I only saw the first episode, but it was pretty good.

Cami on October 10, 2010 at 5:36 pm

  26. Well, it's a rainy day in Oregon so good day to stop the procrastination and get those upteen books in the garage shelves packed up and ready to take to Powell's warehouse next week.

Books are so dear to my heart—-but realistically I no longer have room for these 17 or so boxes of hardbacks, and the College kid grandson wants them but he certainly has no room in his dorm —I've donated 100's of them to school libraries in the area, so off to Powell's the remainder of these are going.

MeKhazSimi on October 10, 2010 at 3:11 pm
    • Good for you. I quit buying books years ago. I rely on the library for my daily book. My book shelves were starting to sag dangerously. The ten or so books from the library I can safely store on top of the refrigerator! The rain has stopped here, but it is cooling off rapidly!

    • What a difference 24 hr can make in your life. What seems like a "brilliant" idea a little after high-noon on one day——can somehow become, "What were you thinking" by sunrise on the following morning. ha

On the bright side—–I now have no choice but to hum the tune —" A skipping on down the yellow brick road to Powell's I go. LOL

  27. Do you think this is too much to ask of HGTV? Soney and I like to watch food network. If one of us won on this blog do you think HGTV would let us pick out one of the stars to cook up a fun bloggers party in our new DH kitchen. Soney and I would pick Paula Deen but she would have to bring her sons and she might want to bring her husband. Oh heck bring the whole family Paula. They have so much fun when they cook together. Brings smiles to Soney and my faces.

  28. Hey I think I see where HGTV is going with this Dream Home float concept.. If the idea does well, maybe they will try to float a Dream Home all the way to Hawaii.

See Bloggers it's just another one of Mary's clever clues. Mary you amaze me! You have been so on the ball lately, and now you're even ahead of schedule with the clues for the next Dream Home.

Perhaps at just the right moment in front of all the TV networks. Jack will stand up and say those magic words I have always wanted to hear… The next Dream Home will be in Hawaii. ; )

Cami on October 10, 2010 at 5:42 pm
    • Cami maybe Hawaii might have a float in the parade too. If they are close to each other you could hop on one and wave then hop over to the other one and wave. Make sure you can change costumes real fast. You wouldn't want skiing gear on the Hawaiian float. And your muumuu might be out of place on the DH float, or maybe not. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GoMmIEKgks&fe

alicesoneysmom on October 10, 2010 at 8:38 pm
      • I wasn't sure what you were going to say. I thought you were going to suggest that I or someone combine the two floats, if I ever want to get my Dream Home in Hawaii.
I could see a collision of the Dream Home float and the Hawaii float, not that I would ever try and make that happen. ; )

Cami on October 10, 2010 at 10:26 pm
    • Talk about clues to the next Dream Home—keep your eyes peeled when the HGTV float goes by on your TV screen. Knowing MARY, she'll figure out a way to covertly place a clue within the float. If we see a wahine (lovely Hawaiian maiden) dressed in a grass skirt, coconut shell top and flower lei "surfing" the stream-fed "lake", that'll probably be a strong signal that Jack has sealed the deal on an Island Dream Home. Of course, January 1 (even in S CA) can be quite nippy, and a tropically-attired wahine might seem out of place among the snow-topped evergreens of Vermont.

DBCoop on October 10, 2010 at 9:14 pm
      • If Mary did hide a clue to next years dream home in the float, I'll bet it would very very tiny so someone would need a microscope to see it. I think we would need CplusE on the job, to decipher any close up pics taken.

Cami on October 14, 2010 at 2:27 pm
  29. I just realized this float is really going to WOW the crowds in Pasadena, and if it WOWS the crowds in Pasadena, it will WOW the crowds all across the Nation.

Cami on October 10, 2010 at 5:58 pm

  32. Hello Everybloggie,

Just popping in to say a quick " Hi" and to get my daily Blog Fix :O) We had a busy weekend, decided to take advantage of this gorgeous weather, and worked on our own HGTV inspired project "How to de clutter your garage". We took everything out and stacked it on the driveway. Then we washed down the garage walls and floor, painted the ceiling and walls, gave a primer coat to the shelving ( finish coat goes on tomorrow). Then we'll paint the floor and leave it to dry for a few days…Please, Weather Fairy, smile on us :O) lol
We installed a tool peg-board and work bench, new lighting to replace the two bare bulb fixtures, and installed wall mounted racks for our mountain bikes and kayaks.
It was a lot of hard work, and we did wonder if by gussy-ing -up the garage, we were putting a tiara on a pig.. lol. .but it actually looks fabulous, bright and airy and soooo spacious now all the clutter has gone. We filled ten trash bags, and put the good stuff , that we no longer use, out by the curb to be recycled and reused . It cost us $54 for the new lights, and twenty bucks for the bike rack, we used up lumber and paint that we already had left over from other projects. Now I just need a day in a Spa, hahah…a massage for my aching back, and a manicure for my paint splotched finger nails :O)
Time for some hot cocoa with an aspirin chaser for my sore muscles :O) Maybe our next project could be a hot tub, I could sure use a nice relaxing soak, aahhh…..Life is superb.
    Be well, Sweet Dreams !

GoldieLocksBear on October 10, 2010 at 10:26 pm
    • Wow Goldie, this is one of the projects we are likely going to be tackling soon. But we still have to insulate and sheetrock the garage. I hate sheetrock. Maybe I should look for an alternative for a garage.
I'm very impressed with all your work. I'll show this to my husband, maybe it'll inspire him.

Cami on October 11, 2010 at 1:12 pm
      • Hi Cami,
Yes, the garage de cluttering was a lot of hard work, we put in another whole day of painting today and my muscles now ache in places that I didn't even know I HAD places . lol
Fortunately the garage walls and ceiling are already finished out, ( plaster and barn boards, with insulation behind, so no need for sheet rocking). We did add layers of that quilted foil insulation on the interior of both garage doors, and we screwed a long strip of rubbery stuff on the bottoms of the doors to stop snow from blowing in :O)
I did wonder if we had in fact bitten off more than we could chew because it is a lot of hard work ~ we haven't even started to paint the concrete floor yet…those interlocking floor covering systems look fantastic, but they're not in our budget, so tomorrow, floor paint it's gotta be :O)
I hope you and your husband do get inspired to do your garage project together. It really is a lot of fun and what a sense of achievement you get when you step back and look at the progress after a long day, I love that feeling, tired but happy !

        Be well,

      • Cami
Friends have said if they ever were going to rewall their garage it would be with a combination of plywood and metal panels. I asked why and they said it would hold up better to use and be much easier to attach shelving to wood –

OmahaLady on October 14, 2010 at 10:20 am
        • Thanks O Lady. I suppose the cost would be higher but I was thinking about durability of the walls. With some sheet metal accents to cover the seems, I think that would awesome.

Cami on October 14, 2010 at 2:31 pm
        • One of the main reason to use sheet rock is to meet fire codes. Sheet rock is a fire rated construction material for inside use whereas plywood is not fire rated for interior use. It's not that hard to locate studs for shelves even after the sheet rock is up. Furring strips can always be used to span longer lengths too.

EdinOregon on October 14, 2010 at 8:46 pm
    • Boy, someone sure worked hard over the weekend — are you trying to put the rest of us to shame? LOL! I did manage to do a little yard work and tidied up my horse trailer in preparation for my trail ride today, but that was nothing compared to the work you did! Hope you get that spa visit soon!

CplusE on October 11, 2010 at 4:44 pm
      • Hi CplusE,

It sounds like you too have been busy:O) We are still beavering away with our garage project, I may get a manicure at the spa before Thanksgiving ! lol. As soon as the garage clean up is finished ~ it's time for yard leaf clean up, we try to stay on top of it, or it becomes a race to rake up the leaves before the snow arrives. lol.
On the bright side….at least it keeps me out of the cookie jar :O)

  33. Happy Columbus Day, bloggers, and especially to all those folks living in Ohio. But what about this guy Christopher? Wasn't he the sort of historical figure who always seemed to be a day late and a dollar short? (He had to keep borrowing money from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to pay for those long and leisurely cruises to the New World, which really wasn't that new after all.) For it was the rough and tumble Vikings (not of the Minnesota variety), under Leif Eriksson that are credited as the first Europeans to explore North America around 1,000 A.D. They immediately dubbed their discovery Vinland. The Spanish, represented by Christopher Columbus, showed up for the party about five hundred years late, claiming their invitation had been lost in the mail.

And the name Vinland? I think it was given to that Scandinavian country instead, which we now call Finland. All part of the extraordinary twists and turns of history.

    • Well, regardless of which team you root for, my bet's on HGTV for a winning touchdown with Dream Home 2011. By the way, what better way to kick off the Dream Home entry season on New Year's Day than a float in the Tournament of Roses Parade. Brilliant!

DBCoop on October 10, 2010 at 10:37 pm
      • I have a feeling there will be a lot of ooos and ahhhhs, and disbelief, that they are giving all of that away, and they've been doing so for years. Not to mention they will discover 3 more home giveaways amongst Scripps Networks… What secrets are you hiding Scripps? Is there more to come? Our cup of Dreams floweth over. Not only do I see the glass is full, I see 4 full glasses.

I like the direction that HGTV, DIY and the Travel Channel is heading. I so enjoyed the Extreme Waterslide Park's episode today on the Travel Channel. It sparked the idea of a different Christmas vacation destination . Now I'm really confused.. Should we go North or should we go South for Christmas?

Honestly I try to avoid any tempting food channels, and when would I ever have time to view any of the other Scripps channels? As it is, I'm wondering how I'm going to involve my favorite websites into all of my homework assignments. After the teacher receives some of my first papers, I'm sure it will become clear, that I have an addiction. The 3 mentioned websites have a wealth of information so I could probably get most of my research from them.

Cami on October 10, 2010 at 11:57 pm
        • As for directions in which to go, Cami, I'm not one to advise. However, there is that famous quote, "Go West young man," but it just doesn't have the same relevance these days, unless you happen to be referring to the next Dream Home. Personally, I started in N CA, and seem to have been going South ever since.

DBCoop on October 11, 2010 at 11:42 am
          • I don't see anything alluring that's calling me to go West, unless we leave land, which would be great, but not practical.

I may be going against the laws of nature (South flying geese) and going North… Way North.

Hey if Santa won't come to you, I say one should go find Santa! Maybe we can convince Santa to go water sliding with us before Christmas?

Coop, I have a feeling you don't enjoy cold weather. How cold does it really get in Pasadena in the winter. You make it sound soooo cold.

Cami on October 11, 2010 at 1:00 pm
          • Ok Coop I just looked at Pasadena's average temps. You must be very sensitive to cold, which would probably explain your migration habits. I would say you are definitely a tropical goose. Would that be a Nene, stuck in Cal.?

Cami on October 11, 2010 at 1:47 pm
          • That's not a tropical goose Cami. That's a native Hawaiian Goose. You just can't get Hawaii off of your mind!

Nope- I am a walking Hawaiian encyclopedia now… Ok maybe not, but I'm learning more all the time.

My goal in life is to get my degree, get a great job, be transferred to Hawaii and make lots of money. Yes I know I'll need lots of money to live in Hawaii.

I'll have grandchildren before I get my degree and probably can't take them with me, so never mind.

Cami on October 11, 2010 at 6:36 pm
          • Ah well, Ed, better to be called a Nene then a Lanai Creeper (sounds rather unsavory, although they are believed extinct since 1937)

Nevermind, I'll leave you with a few favorite words of mine as I happily migrate south to warmer climes: Lele au la, hokahoka wale iho.

    • Speaking of history here's a little historical item Oregonians remember, ( As a teen-ager w/o common sense on that day—-I drove around Salem watching entire roofs flying off major buildings)

Excerpt from Wiki: The Columbus Day Storm of 1962 (otherwise known as the Big Blow, which began as Typhoon Freda) was an extratropical cyclone that ranked among the most intense to strike the United States Pacific Northwest since at least 1948, likely since the January 9, 1880 "Great Gale" and snowstorm. On a larger scale, the Columbus Day Storm of 1962 is a contender for the title of most powerful extratropical cyclone recorded in the U.S. in the 20th century; with respect to wind velocity, it is unmatched by the March 1993 "Storm of the Century" and the "1991 Halloween Nor’easter" (aka "The Perfect Storm"). In the eastern United States, only hurricanes of Category 3 or higher have brought winds of the magnitude witnessed in Oregon and Washington on Columbus Day, October 12, 1962.

We had so much rain when we were there, as a result of Tropical Depression Nicole, so our day trip to Stowe was curtailed. It's a gorgeous area, though, and I hope that I get to see it all again during the DH 2011 Winner's Weekend (wink!)!

    • I was beginning to think that you were Super Fan Gail in disguise Wyo_Girl. I guess because she was supposed to be up there in the near future. So what drew you to Vermont? Was it the Leaf peeping or the Dream Home or both? Are you saying you didn't get to go into the Stowe Mt. Resort area? You didn't get to see the Dream Home? I would be crushed, if I went to Vermont and didn't get to see the Resort and the Dream Home. But those leaves are gorgeous and I suppose Vermont has other spectacular features. I am still jealous you got to go. ; ) I hope you get to see it again too, perhaps around April.. ; )

      • We had planned this New England trip even before they announced the Stowe DH. We're retired educators, so it's kind of a cliche! We did get to the Stowe resort and we also saw Spruce Peak resort (not the same), but we couldn't find the Dream Home. Another blogger gave me great directions, but we still had trouble. It was so rainy and foggy that it was hard to see anything except the close-up gorgeous trees. Smuggler's Notch was Incredible!

    • Welcome back, Wyo_Girl! Too bad about the weather — did you get to see the Dream Home (even if it was soggy!)? Where all did you go in Vermont? Any recommendations on what to see? After all, someone will be taking a trip there in the near future and it is good to be prepared (even if that person has made one trip there already! LOL!).

      • We missed the Dream Home, C&E. We got lost. It was still a fun trip, and we'll return. It's hard when we only had a couple of days, because the weather did not cooperate, though we did get a chance to tour Ben and Jerry's!

        Wyo_Girl on October 11, 2010 at 6:49 pm
    • Vermont certainly must have been stunning, but unfortunate about the timing of the rain. That was the one advantage of my virtual trip to Vermont months ago, since weather was never a factor. However, rain or not, it's understandably a sight to be seen and experienced in person.

I think I would spend more time in Vegas, especially if the Urban Oasis, is announced here, just to be in the energy that surrounds the excitement. The gang is pretty quiet about where they are building or renovating, so I don't think I or anyone will know until well into their plans, but that doesn't stop us to party on, and there is alot of fun things to do especially when the weather is cooler.

  36. Brilliant idea!!! Now the world will know to view the dream home and enter…. ah the media world and competition. What a great way to let the world know about home construction with new and old ideas and our dreams envisioned. Ideas put in stone and/or wood and color and with taste and functioning elegant appliances and spaces in beautiful locations!!.

I wonder whether they can get the rights to play a little Sound of Music hits during the parade as the float rolls down the 5 and a half miles of Colorado Blvd.
Which song do you think they will play??? The hills are alive with the sound of music…

All of the floats are able to be seen after the parade and some available to see during construction too.
This float from HGTV will be so much fun to see … with a bit of Vermont.

By the way look for the La Cañada Flintridge Float. We used to live there. It is a town of 30,000 in the hills to north&west above the Rose Bowl.
The LCF float never ever has a person on it and is always a bit of whimsy. Also it is 100% built by volunteers from La Cañada Flintridge. ( yes, there is a tilde over the n and pronounced Canyada) It helps to have JPL, the Jet Propulsion Lab there in LCF.
La Cañada Flintridge is at the 1500-2000 foot above sea level… with other range of mountains to north above that kind of like Vermont. You will see views of parade past the Norton Simon Art Museum, past the Rose Bowl to the hills and mountains.

So glad HGTV is taking the opportunity … what a coup!

    pj4joy on October 11, 2010 at 3:27 pm
    • So it sounds like you have a little T of Roses Parade experience. Are you saying the public can go and look at all the floats after the parade?? Without being chased away?

I wonder if my husband wouldn't mind if I kidnapped him and flew him down to Pasadena (Burbank) to celebrate our 22nd Wedding Anniversary at the Parade. I realized flying would be the only way for me to see the parade in person, since I wouldn't want to hurry a drive back home to start my first day at college. I think missing your first day of college is frowned upon by professors/teachers, and I want straight A's.

It’s not easy to distract someone’s eye from the vibrancy of Stowe’s fall color – unless you happen to be a striking leopard Appaloosa horse!

Hope everyone had a fun-filled Columbus Day!

  38. Well, it's about time for new time-lapse photos, right? I'm guessing they have the lot leveled and some portion of the landscaping planted by now.

MeKhazSimi on October 11, 2010 at 7:16 pm
    • You know I've been wondering about the landscaping plans… I'm curious to see what they do.

  40. Nine days and we will be finished with daily entry sweeps—-then what?

MeKhazSimi on October 11, 2010 at 7:31 pm
  41. Hi everybloggie,

Yes, Stowe is getting chilly in the evenings now, and the leaves have fallen , so fluffy white flakes will soon be softly falling and putting all the bears to sleep for the winter :O)

Here in New Hampshire we still have leaves on the trees, they are not yet at peak foliage, but the evenings are perfect for sweaters and a log fire, or a warm Golden Retriever asleep on your slippers :O)
We are about an hour and forty minutes from Franconia, very pretty scenery up there. Our Son Thomas was at the Pumpkin Regatta in Vermont, and said it was a lot of fun, I think he alsotold me that one pumpkin weighed sixteen hundred pounds this year, that size of pie would make good eatin' for a whole crowd of friends ! lol.
    Warm wishes, dreamy dreams,
    GoldiLocks,
    XO

  42. Mary: HELP. I will be happy to watch the Dream Home float in the Rose Bowl parade on Jan. 1st. But I thought that was the traditional day to reveal the interior of the DH and the date to enter. A blogger said nine days left to enter, perhaps talking about the UO.??? Are we not going to see the Dream Home on Jan 1st? When are we going to be able to enter? Please answer. Thanks.

Katydiddle on October 11, 2010 at 8:22 pm
    • Hi katydiddle, I'm sure everything is right on schedule as usual. I posted nine days left for sweeps—–that was probably confusing—-guess I should have posted on the UO blog—–just chatting on today——-as obviously I'm not paying much attention to which blog I'm on either. ha

MeKhazSimi on October 11, 2010 at 8:46 pm
      • Dear Me: Thanks, I think I've got it, and a good reminder to enter the UO sweeps. OK, how does this sound. We watch the Dream Home float in the Rose Parade (and a lucky chance for those attending to see live some DH celebs), maybe Jack T, Linda W. and our Super Fan Gail, all smiling and as proud as punch (maybe Mimosas). I might lift a glass of Bloody Mary to toast our dear Mary, who has been so kind and busy lately. Then the show will continue with the reveal of the Dream Home and we will see the furnished interior at last, always the highlight of my New Year's Day. And then place my first entry. Oh, I'm dreaming big and so excited.

  43. Mare, you kids did it again! You just bowled me over, I aint wearing rose colored glasses, and I am seein a gorgeous HGTV float, at the Rose Bowl, with more roses than I have ever seen, so that's nothing to sneeze at. You guys at HGTV, must be having a good time, and staying up very late, working on all of your brilliant ideas, Please get your rest, and make sure you drink lots of rose hip tea, or rose wine. Why, with the Stowe house in minature, and everything a person can do in Stowe Vermont- fishing, skiing, trouting, and living in the HGTV house. Thanks, HGTV you guys sure do float my boat.

  44. I wanted to add that the scroll title "Building Dreams Friendships and Memories" in gold lattice lettering surrounded by roses reminds me of a fine hard bound fable book with the stories of Hans Christian Andersen that you grow up with. This is so apropo to this site, and as a group, from the very first page of the story till now, it's been like a legendary tale. We keep building memories. and stayed tuned for chapter two, as our dreams begin to unfold.

Janzee on October 12, 2010 at 1:07 am
  45. Stay tuned, fans. I wonder if, during the HGTV half hour special, The Building of the HGTV Dream Home Float (immediately preceding the broadcast of the Tournament of Roses Parade), we'll see MARY and friends, Jack T, Linda Woodrum, or even HGTV President Jim Samples himself, up to their eyes and ears in a stunning variety of colorful flower petals, hard at work putting the last minute finishing touches on the float?

When will MARY surprise us with a sneak preview of a rendition of this magical float?

DBCoop on October 12, 2010 at 11:46 am
    • That of course Coop is a brilliant idea!!!!! I spent a good part of high school building floats for homecoming parades, and I remember the flowers this one year for a rodeo parade in Tucson, were outrageous. I can only imagine the HGTV float.

Janzee on October 13, 2010 at 10:29 pm
      • There you go, HGTV. I see an eager hand raised to volunteer to work on the Dream Home float from an experienced flower fastener! Hope to see you on the TV special "The Building of the HGTV Dream Home Float" that airs immediately preceding the Tournament of Roses Parade.

DBCoop on October 14, 2010 at 11:20 am
        • The vote on the float is in the tote. With a great sounding fanfaronade, I am the freshest, fastest, fabulist, foward thinking, flower fastner, and can do the fandando. Volunteers anyone?

Janzee on October 14, 2010 at 1:21 pm
          • Yes, I volunteer to help. I will foray into the fabulous flower frontier with flair.

AnneEliseSouth on October 14, 2010 at 1:34 pm
          • Your flowering fame has fueled us. Here's to the AnneEliseSouth fare!!!!

Janzee on October 14, 2010 at 3:47 pm
    • My plans have changed so I don't know if I'd be able to volunteer, unless I just get on a bird and fly down.

If worse comes to worse, and time was a ticking away maybe HGTV with all their connections can get all the help they need right there in California.

Cami on October 14, 2010 at 2:35 pm
  46. The float sounds spectacular and I'm sure you're capable of building better floats than many of the other entrants because that's what you do. You build and have a host of creative artists. I will mark my calendar of the show date.

    Terri1 on October 12, 2010 at 2:39 pm
    • Agreed, I think that our HGTV is going to be quite a magnificant site to see. And you know that this entire blog will be tuned in. What a great surprise this has been!!!1

  47. Good evening everybloggie,

A quick "Blog Fix" for me before I climb aboard the " Sleepy Time Express", lol.
Phew, another fun but long day working on our garage project. I do hope we'll wrap it up by this weekend, a bit of a slow day today….Good thing that my husband and I have been together since 1974, because otherwise it'd be :
" Dueling at Dawn, with paint brushes drawn " ! lol. We are absolute opposites when it comes down to working style. He is " Mr. Coffee Break every ten minutes" and " Mr. I need a different size paint roller from the hardware store" kinda guy. I'm a " Paint until lunch time, then fold laundry while I'm finishing my coffee kinda gal". lol Can you good bloggin' buddies tell it's been a bit fraught at the job site today? lol.

As I was tediously painting the garage shelving, I was thinking about all the people who work behind the scenes to help make life easier for all of us in myriad ways…I'm sure you can all imagine lots of different ideas, but how amazing is it, that someone puts all the hooks on the shower curtains in new hotels…can you imagine a 500 room hotel….that sure is a LOT of shower curtain hooks :O) lol.
It brings our garage project down to a manageable size in the big scheme of things. :O)

Hoping your day dawns happy and bright !

    • Hi GoldieLocksBear, You two are awesome. I, too spent the week-end in the garage, packing up umpteen books. It feels good to have them elsewhere, even though it was a tad emotional to part with all of them. I simply don't have room for them any longer so I blessed them and left them at Powell's and I hope they find another good home, eventually.

I love your description of the people behind the scenes. This is so true. We take it so for granted all the little things that make our life comfortable. LOL

MeKhazSimi on October 13, 2010 at 12:24 pm
      • Hi MeKhazSimi,

That's a wonderful idea of yours to enjoy your books and then give them away in order that others can also benefit from the joy of reading ! I will look into the options of doing that too, donating boxes of books would help me to clear my shelves :O )
What I have been doing up to now, is when I've read a book, I leave it for other people to find, if it's nice weather, I'd put the book on a park bench, sometimes on a coffee shop table, or on a seat at the airport, etc. One day I'm going to buy myself an E reader, then I can upload books and not have to find shelf space for them :O)
So many great books, so little time !
        Happy reading :O)
        GoldieLocks,
        XO

GoldieLocksBear on October 13, 2010 at 9:26 pm
        • Oh GoldieLocksBear, This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Leaving books for others to find, pick up, and read. Way cool.

I've thought about an E reader, but it will take some time for me to give up the feel of a book in my hands. There's just something about turning the pages.

Over the last few years I've donated a ton of books. I now have an entire wall of cabinets with "empty shelves". in the garage—this is good. LOL

  48. The Weather Channel says Stowe, Vermont is at 38* right now. It will be a high of 56* today and 36* tonight.

RJMstone on October 13, 2010 at 7:53 am
    • Sounds perfect! It will be beautiful, and at least it's not raining like when I was there a week ago!!

      Wyo_Girl on October 13, 2010 at 8:33 am
    • If it's 38 now, they probably got frost last night. Although, by mid Oct. that far north, the killing frost has most likely done it's work already, and the fall foliage is well past peak.
Fireplace season is there, in the evenings at least.

        The Weather Channel says…….
In 2006, an unprecedented October lake-effect snowstorm hit Buffalo, New York, with
22.6 inches of snow from the 12th to the 13th. Many trees and power lines fell.

RJMstone on October 13, 2010 at 5:17 pm
  49. Since RJ mentioned the weather in Stowe, I thought everyone (if they want to) should throw their Stowe Mt. Resort snowfall guess into the hat.

I think the rule should be this…. When will the first snowfall accumulate on the ground and stay for at least 24 hours. I think my guess was October 28th. It will start falling about 6:00 pm and will be around 6 inches by morning. I will stay with that guess, and will wager……Nothing, since I have Mother Nature on retainer (reserved, rented) only for the last 3 weeks of December.

You don't have to be as specific as I am. Just give a date.

Cami on October 13, 2010 at 10:49 am
    • Good morning November 1st. LOL

MeKhazSimi on October 13, 2010 at 10:56 am
    • I'll guess Stowe's first snowfall to be October 21. That'll be the day after the entry period ends for the Urban Oasis, and it will give MARY a chance to throw out a great new blog thread and photo of the first snow of the season in Stowe, thus getting us geared up for some great videos of the Dream Home interior. If anybody can get it to snow in Stowe on cue, it will be MARY.

DBCoop on October 13, 2010 at 3:47 pm
    • Great idea Cami !

I'll throw my hat into the ring…( a snow chapeau to wear in Stowe ) …my guess is 4 inches of snow on November 7th :O)

  50. Good morning. Maybe tomorrow we will have new time-lapse photos of the DH. I checked out the BC site but the blog seems a little too unristricted for my tastes. Just my opinion. Hope everyone is having a beautiful fall day. LOL

MeKhazSimi on October 13, 2010 at 11:08 am
    • Well that statement about the BC blog sounds a little pompous.

Scary I've resorted to replying to myself—-definitely time for some updates from Mary.

MeKhazSimi on October 13, 2010 at 5:01 pm
      • So what statement are you referring to MeKhazSimi? I went over there this morning and found some unrest and thought that you were referring to that.

Cami on October 13, 2010 at 6:07 pm
        • Hi Yes I was referring to the "unrest". When I reread my post later today I felt my remarks about the BC blog sounded a little severe. LOL
