HGTV Dream Home 2011: First Impressions

Stowe is quiet.

I don’t mean that in a derogatory way. It’s so peaceful here, especially during this off time between fall foliage season and the holidays. Things are still, as if the little village has decided to take a much-needed nap before the skiers and hustle-bustle of the winter season blasts the area with activity. It’s the perfect time for our online team (interactive planning director, senior visual designer, world-class photographers and I) to visit HGTV Dream Home 2011 to snap photos and take notes in preparation for the launch of the virtual tour. (Mark your calendars for December 20, btw.)

Our first full day at the home was easy, breezy. The sun was shining; icicles dangling from the roof’s edge were melting – the constant drip of the glistening water drops had a hypnotic effect I appreciated. The home’s interior, bursting with colors, seemed to smile.

Builder Brendan O’Reilly stopped by in the afternoon to chat about the home design and construction details he found particularly challenging. I think my favorite exterior feature at the moment is the masonry-clad foundation, which calls to mind historic homes and limestone barns that dot the countryside near my hometown in Pennsylvania. Brendan, a Pennsylvania native himself, chose bluestone, quarried in the northeastern part of the state, to pave walkways. I’ve come to realize that each HGTV Dream Home tells a personal story about its builder.

Today is cold and rainy. Snowflakes were falling this morning as I interviewed Linda, whose creativity and out-of-the-box approach to design never cease to amaze me. I love what she’s done in the master suite. She says her favorite space is the kitchen – and for good reason.

I hope you are all well and excited about this year’s home. I can’t wait to share more details with you in December.

  1. The Stowe one was dated September 28th, so I'm guessing she covered everything but the Dream Home. I like Sabrina. Maybe she'll take us shopping during the Fall season in Stowe.

  2. What a Gorgeous picture Mary posted! Looks like rich colors of burgundy, deep greens, golden yellows and winter whites?! What a “Dreamy” winter home amidst pine trees and bright stars! Simply Mesmorizing! Fit for a lucky winner! Thank you HGTV for the DREAM! Beverly :-|

  5. Thanks for the glimmer of hope! The snapshot of the space looks beautiful, warm and inviting. Like so many others, I will be checking back in on December 20th.

There have been a few hints that this very special home is designed to be multi-generational. I am thankful that both the exterior and the floor plans indicate that there are no steps to the home and that the main living areas (including a bedroom) seem to be all on the ground level, making more of the home accessible to anyone and everyone, which is truly wonderful. I'm sure it will be a very special gathering place. And, a home waiting to be filled with many memories. The winner will be very lucky!

  7. Deerspring: Thanks for the post. The DH float looks huge. Wonder what flowers they will use for all that snow. And what is that small building at the very front of the float? Must be important to Stowe.

  11. I am hoping that this is the table that the basket of pine cones is sitting on:

I think it is just lovely! But it may be this one, in a finish called Chai:

CplusE on November 6, 2010 at 5:56 am
    • CplusE…. that 'behind the sofa' type table you picked could very well be it…. in that Chai color.
It would be in the right spot…… between the Gathering room and an opening to the kitchen.
OR….. the picture could be showing the top of a low coffee table that is surrounded by the loveseat on the left and then a full-sized sofa…….. like on their floorplans.

As you can see from the DHOME first floor… floorplans. http://www.hgtvpro.com/hpro/photo_template/articl

I'm wondering what those four chairs in the ANNEX will be like!!!! COMFTY to a fault, I hope!

RJMstone on November 6, 2010 at 12:53 pm
      • I'm thinking the ottoman between the chairs is the coffee table shown on the floor plan, and maybe a console behind the sofa is an added piece (could just be wishful thinking on my part though!).

CplusE on November 7, 2010 at 12:34 pm
        • CplusE… that Ethan Allen website shows a 20" tall table/stool made out of the same stuff that the pinecones' basket is made out of, I think.
"…made of water hyacinth, an abundant tropical plant whose dried fibers are soft and extremely strong."
          http://www.ethanallen.com/product?productId=2897

RJMstone on November 8, 2010 at 12:04 am
      • Just for fun I looked at Ethan Allen coffee tables and now I think the table in the picture might be this one (in the color Chai):

        http://www.ethanallen.com/product?productId=972&a

When I zoomed in on the second picture and looked at the left corner detail it is almost an exact match to Mary's picture! This is a beautiful table too!

  12. Another quiet, peaceful and oh so sunny weekend here in S CA, and even a slower pace in the blogs while we wait for more of MARY's fuzzy photos of the Dream Home. Why it's almost reminiscent of her past Location Clues where we have to carefully examine every detail with a fine-tooth comb!

However, it also does lead to high anxiety. For some (no names mentioned) that can result in a tendency toward virtual food related activities. In my case, too many idle moments lead to song, or actually, some simple poetic license. Now, I can't put all of the responsibility for that squarely on MARY's shoulders, or could I?

DBCoop on November 6, 2010 at 2:47 pm

  13. While initial impressions are often lasting impressions, which is why a GOOD first impression is so important, whether it be a personal one or that of the next Dream Home, it's clear to me that while this beginning impression we've been given is somewhat unclear, bloggers and dreamers everywhere are more than impressed with this dreamy lodge. I'm sure that as the drama unfolds over the coming weeks, we're going to be absolutely snowballed by this impressive work of art that HGTV, the architect, builder, landscaper and interior designer have brought together for us — and I'll be the first to admit that I'm a most impressionable kind of guy when it comes to fine works of architecture and design.

Somehow I think the casual reader might sense that I have a very favorable opinion of the Spruce Peak 2011 Dream Home. Impressionante, no?

DBCoop on November 6, 2010 at 3:06 pm
  14. It might take more than fancy cars and good looks to impress Shania Twain, but if she knew the Stowe Dream Home like we know it, she'd be really impressed too, 'cause this house definitely has the touch and will certainly keep you warm at night!

    FIRST IMPRESSIONS

    1.
I've seen a few houses that looked pretty smart
But this one's got perfect right down to an art
The floorplan's real genius, it's just on the ball
    A one-off orig'nal, which shows above all

    Oh-oo-oh, I think you're so special
    Oh-oo-oh, I think you're somethin' else

Okay, so this Dream Home's a great mountain lodge
With a ski dorm, "tree" room, and car barn garage
Even that's not enough to impress me as such
Then add in the views and a warmth you can touch

      Oh-oo-oh, I think you're way special
      Oh-oo-oh, I think you're somethin' else

Okay, so this Dream Home's a great mountain lodge
With a ski dorm, "tree" room, and car barn garage
      A secret room — maybe — it's all just a hunch
You'll find out one day, I'll invite you to lunch

I think that this Dream Home's artfully dressed
From top floor to bottom it's got what it takes
Be it summer or fall and winter's snowflakes

      Oh-oo-oh, I think it's so special
Oh-oo-no, I think of nothin' else

  15. WOW! You are so talented DBCoop!! Congrats on this great new song! While you are singing it, will Cami be accompanying you on the piano? :)
("The Professor and the Hawaiian Princess"?) :)

Maybe Shania Twain would sound great singing your song too!

RJMstone on November 6, 2010 at 4:54 pm
    • Shania Twain sing it? I don't see why not. Even though she's from Timmons, Ontario, Canada, she spends plenty of time in Nashville, so it would be easy for HGTV to get her over to Knoxville to record a singing vlog that MARY could post online for us.

What I am wondering about is the same color blond wood in the kitchen and throughout. Do you think it will give the house more of an open look, or do you think some staining, like what you would see in a tree trunk would be cool. I think they call that antiquing

I cannot wait to visualize myself with friends and family in every room. I can see myself driving to Vermont, soaking up the cultural and country beauty along the journey, and learning the nuances that make this part of the country unique. I see myself arriving at the entrance to Stowe, Vermont. I wlil update my vision more near to December 20, this cannot be rushed!

  24. The Fireplace front could very well be Stainless Steel. It seems to be reflecting the colors from across the room. Some of the colors could be from some of the wood post and beam structures. Also could be revealing some of the colors of the narrow walls. Kitchen colors could be reflected tru the opened area above the countertop.

Look at the floorplans to judge for yourselves. http://www.hgtvpro.com/hpro/photo_template/articl

RJMstone on November 7, 2010 at 2:14 am
    • I agree with you on the stainless (although I would rather it were copper) but it just looks like stainless in the picture to me.

SydneyNK on November 7, 2010 at 12:10 pm
    • I agree too — it looks like the lamp on the left and the bowl the apples are in might be stainless as well, so that would be consistent ( although like SydneyNK I kind of liked the idea of copper too!).

CplusE on November 7, 2010 at 12:25 pm
  25. The exterior appears to be copper plating on the fireplace… I wonder how that's going to turn out as it ages… pale, mossy green?

fraggyx on November 7, 2010 at 4:34 am
    • There is definitely copper on the fireplace exterior — it says so in this article:

      http://renovationsmarts.blogspot.com/2010/11/stow

Click twice on the first or second picture and you will get an excellent look at the copper! It is very shiny right now but that will dull with time, probably to some shade of green as you suggest.

  27. I had a little fun this morning checking out the cabinet colors (thanks RJMstone!), then went and looked at the flooring video on the HGTVpro site to try and get an idea of the color schemes for the house. The floors are in a natural-colored engineered maple, which is a light yellowish tone with a fair amount of color variation. At least part of the gathering room seems to be painted a shade of red (perhaps the annex?), while the downstairs rooms seem to be in a neutral tan. The cabinet colors for the main floor all seem to be in warm tones, from a yummy chocolate brown in the powder room to shades of brown and yellow-orange (don't know how else to describe it!) in the kitchen and a sort of warm taupe in the mudroom, to the fiery red in the master bath. Downstairs the colors may be a little cooler. The bunkroom and dorm bath have brown cabinets, slightly lighter than the brown in the kitchen, but the refreshment center cabinets are black, the laundry room has blue, and the guest bath white. Cami, if there is to be any wintry color scheme it will probably be in the guest suite!

That light Maple 5" hardwood engineered (layered) plank flooring sure looks great in the Dream Home! It has maple color variances that had interest. It goes well with the indoor TREES.

Right… video shows a tan color on the bunkroom walls.
That Reddish wall color …. I think is on the Master bedroom walls, because of the outdoor staircase we see outside the huge window.

OmahaLady on November 7, 2010 at 10:36 am
    • Is it just the color on my monitor? It looks to me like green that's in a bowl of some sort on the hassock in the center of the photo. I think it might be some green apples used as an accent color in the Great Room. It will be interesting to see if Linda Woodrum has used shades of greens in other areas throughout the home as a nod to the colors of nature that surround it.

Then you will be asked by popular demand to read some of your Christmas stories, home made poetry and Coop spin offs which will be loved by the parents and children of Stowe.

  37. Well i might be a little slow due to me suffering from a tramatic brain injury, and yes that to me is a rather good excuse. I now understand that the tours are going to be starting on december 20, 2010. I now understand that by reading oll the peoples blogs. This picture at the top of the page is the only one picture that is taken of inside the house. The only thing that was really blurry was the fire place. But i am excited about the december 20, 2010 will be a starting of the inside tours. this is exciting now that im starting to understand what is going on. Im still having computer problems, becouse me female squrell chewed through my power cord again. I did try and use black electrical tape to put the cord back together. Its not workin g verry well.Im not an electrician.

  38. Ok everyone. I'm starting to buy a Christmas tree that would look so nice in that living room Mary is showing us. If I win the house, I will just have to have you ladies over for a luncheon. I'm getting so excited I just can not contain myself! God forbid I don't win….it was nice to dream anyway.

She usually sleeps next to me. So are they going to just post more photos and video of the dream home on december 20 th? At least we get to see the out side as the beuitifull home was being built. I flip through the pictures ervery day.

  44. Its really kind of funny im a hole month ahead of time. Becouse this is only november ,and the new videos of the HGTV dream home dosn't start until december 20. I mean the tour of this beuitifull home start's on december 20 , and i was thinking it was december, and of course i was wrong. However the next month until the tour's start will go by verry fast like this hole year has. It is still as exiting to me to just have a small glimp's of the living room , even if it is a some what blurry photo. Im not able to get my photo into the computer, becouse i am rather new with the computer , and the internet. I am still learning. I am happy with this year's HGTV dream home givaway. It's so owsome. thanks HGTV dream home hudjon1977

I do recycle erverything to help keep our environment as clean as possible, However i do get paid to recyle my aluminum can's. This is what i now do to make a hounest living. Thank's HGTV dream home2011

  47. Dear Gail i do wish that you could at least say my name on the blog, which is jonathon. This would make me feel good inside and out. I am only dreaming about being the winner of this year's HGTV dream home, and im sure that im not the only one out here that is dreaming. I currently rent ,and am looking for a new place to live , becouse there is a company by the name of twin falls housing authority ,who have been harrassing me for almost 7 year's. The harrassment started two day's after moving in.__ But they have been telling me that they were going to make an example out of me ,, and that i was going to be homeless. This is a real fear of mine. They did give me an extra 3 month's to find a place to live. I am terrified. What can i do? Im moving. It started when im an animal lover. I feed squrell's ervery day. And accross the street were im living is a woman who has been poisoning them with rat poisoning and penutbutter._____________

  48. Well she lyed complained to the housing authority. Then i recived an eviction notice. This coppany told me that there is nothing that i can do becouse they are the government, So my government who i would die for is pushing me out on the street, so im am going to be homeless. Well is do love writing to the bolgg ervery day at least once. Now i also know who Gail is. I see her ervery day , but now i can put her name with the face i have been seeing for year's now. Gail i would really like you to say my name wich is jonathon thank's blogger

  49. I have realized from reading all the coment's on this blog , that ervery one want to win the dream home. That mean's the chances are slimmer, but it could , and will happen to me. I do love , love, love erverything about this year's owsome HGTVdream home. Thank you so much to the dream team. You are all verry talented , and god bless you verry much. I do thank god erveryday for me having a second chance at life. I make ervery day the most that im able to make it. I try to have fun ervery day. No matter what i am doing. The coolest part about this year's dream home , besides it's beuity. But there are so many out door activities, and i would utilize erverthing out door's that is possible. I can find myself doing thing's that i have never done, but there is allway's a first time for everything. Good job dream team

  50. All I can say about Dream Home 2011 is that you can bet that the winner will be someone who doesn’t actually need another home because they already own their own home and in the meantime there are countless people that enter who will never have a chance to live in the HGTV Dream Home because every winner in the past were already doing well financially and had a home of their own…. We have entered every year and basically no matter how many times you enter you actually only end up with one entry in the end and then they already know who they are giving the home to way before the drawing otherwise how would they be able to set up well in advance with the family of the winner they have already chosen and set up the big reveal??? I’m a 45 year old US Army Disabled Veteran that struggles to support their family and will almost assuredly never be able to buy a home for my family and there are countless others just like me that will never win a Dream Home, it’s just not going to happen!!! Well not unless I become a Doctor or lawyer or well off enough to where I don’t need to win it and then maybe I could win it…. I’m happy for the past winners that have won but none of them really needed a new home because they already had one.. I still enter even though I know its a PIPE DREAM HOME even my wife doesn’t enter anymore because she knows someone else will win that already has a home, is financially secure, and really doesn’t benefit from winning the new home, well except for the money they get from selling it and the cash won with the home, but I mean they most likely already had a home and doesn’t have a physical need for the home…. Whereas someone like me and others would otherwise never have the chance to own a home
