The 2012 Home

Time to get those creative juices flowing. HGTV Dream Home 2012: Where do you think it will be? Or, better yet, where do you think it should be?

My dreamy pick? Imagine a Federal-style, two-story home, if you will. This home is built from solid limestone, mined from a quarry just a stone’s throw from the property. The site is slightly sloped in the back and the emerald-green lawn leads gracefully to a babbling trout stream (don’t deny me the pleasure of saying you might pass a small vineyard of Niagra grapes on your way there). The interior is light, bright and entirely eco-friendly. In fact, let’s make it net zero, save for one old-school, energy-wasting component: a very large, open hearth on the ground floor. It’s so large, in fact, that the fire warms the entire floor and makes a cozy sitting area with two club chairs nestled in its midst. This lovely home is situated in the heart of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, very near the Delaware River and tourist attractions, but with enough buffer to make it cozy, private … a true getaway.

Oh, I almost forgot – the home comes with its own pet goat.

Your turn.

  1. Chincoteague, Virginia *****

Where you can see beautiful sea life, vibrant sun sets/ starry night skies, and AMAZING protected wild horses? Chincoteague, VA! One of my favorite places to visit. Not to mention there is a NASA facility there… for all you nerds like me.

The dream house needs to be completely different than the usual "beach house". It should brick with a mix of the post victorian style white washed wooden cottage construction. I would LOVE to see slate shingles to be brought back to this day and age for the roof. A widows walk at the top is a must. The house should be on higher ground so a basement could be built(something many east coast homes lack). I have been hoping that HGTV would just call me on this, because what I have in my mind would be AMAZING! just saying, CHINCOTEAGUE, VIRGINIA

  2. I would love to see a dream home built in N Carolina, near the mountains. A beautiful log style home with huge windows to bring in lots of sunlight, also a large stone fireplace to warm up to on chilly nights. The lawn being large with a babbling brook and surounded by many trees for privacy and the feeling of the wilderness around you! oh how wonderful that would be!!

  4. I would love to have a home that has a beautiful view, low humidity climate, no snow/freezing weather during the wintertime months, one story, solar efficiency, calming effect, short drive to mountains & lakes. A place where the view takes my breath away. Low crime area a must. A place where children and grandchildren would love to visit their grandparents. In other words, a dream come true!

  5. I'd like to see a home built in Tennessee. Near Nashville, on a lake or river. Say…somewhere around Percy Priest Lake. I love the lake homes, especially the ones that are done in a craftsman style. Build a dock, and instead of giving away a car….give away a boat! :) And include a small boathouse/guest house for visitors. Build on a higher elevation so no worries about flooding. Being near Nashville would open up a lot of possibilities for things to do, and the area is just beautiful. I vote Tennessee.

  6. Everybody has their own idea of the perfect home and where. You-all have great dreams. My dream would be in the side of a mountain by a stream with a small waterfall. Yes an under ground home! How much more energy effecient can you start with. Solor panels and a windmill to complete the energy effiency. 4 bedrooms as I am raising 3 grandchildren, and a kitchen with all the gadgets. A smal round pool with a restfull deck over looking a quiet woodland and stream. Oh well, dream on.

  7. I am still hoping for Sedona, AZ., since all my family lives on the main land. However, if it is Hawaii, let it be something unique. Maybe a treehouse.

  8. Oh, how I would LOVE for the next Dream Home to be in Bucks County, PA! It's where I grew up, and my husband and I LOVE it here, we wouldn't want to raise our family anywhere else. We are close to Shore points, the Poconos Mountains, and the county is RICH in history. It would be the PERFECT location!

  9. I would like to see the 2012 HGTV Dream in the Pacific Northwest. Hawaii is fun, but the expense of building and cost of living make the Pacific NW more viable. I feel that this region of the country has been ignored by the show and deserves some attention.
My dream would be similar to Mary's, to see a beautiful home built on the sunnier, east side of either Oregon or Washington. There is plenty of access to wine country, land, recreation, cities for culture. Right now I would recommend the areas of Walla, Walla, or Wenatchee in Washington or Pendleton, Bend or The Dalles in Oregon.

  12. I really want the Dream Home 2012 to be in Hawaii! :) It will be a dream to live there. I can't imagine how I would react to win the Dream Home, especially if it's located in Hawaii. I was hoping the next Dream Home to be somewhere tropical, sunny, and with an ocean veiw. That's why Hawaii is perfect to me for the Dream Home 2012! B) So please Mary, have the Dream Home 2012 loacted in Hawaii!

  16. Mary, phenomenal! And since I once raised goats, a pet goat would be the icing on the cake!

  17. Lualai at Parker Ranch seems to be a likely development that is new and looks a little HGTVish in Hawaii that also offers the horseback riding and farm land depicted in one of the photographs.

I will have to enter everyday if the location is indeed Hawaii. That would be quite an adventure.

  18. My first pick is Martha's Vineyard if I had my choice but Hawaii would be a great fantasy location for so many.

  23. I think we should revamp the dream home concept and strat making each years dream home a true dream home. I love the show don't get me wrong. But the homes being built are someone elses idea of a dream home. Designed, built, landscaped and decorated for WHO? We all know from HGTV that we all have our own style. Our own ideas on what a dream home should be. You just have to read this blog. I think HGTV should pick the lucky person FIRSTand then build the show around tthe design, building and decoratng of their dream home. I think it would be so much fun to see the excitment in their faces as they watch each stage of their home being done. It would be a hands on type of thing. They would be making the real choices. Then you are not just giving away a house. Someone is winning a real home, a home of their dreams.

    bsan111 on May 12, 2011 at 6:26 am
    • Excellent idea!! Make it affordable so the winner can KEEP IT. A dream home doesnt need to be worth several millions. With the economy what is is, people are downsizing as well. Maybe a combo of energy efficient and smaller size?

  24. Good day Ms. Mary. My husband and I did take all of the clues that you dropedon all of us. We find that the city is very low in crime. The biggest crime there is a parking ticket. Big on tourist. Yes it is. As a matter of fact, I was thinking of moving there in 2001. But moved to Fla. The city is around native america names. The night life is small. But that would be ok. I know that I could get job there with the towns biggest company. Buck County is a nice sizes county. Right by New Jersey. That would be nice. Now when you put the clue on the game board with the word peanutbutter. Now that put me into a tail spin. peanutbutter, peanutbutter. Man. Then we took the word limestone and looked for the mines. And NOAA for the river. I mean, we looked, and looked. It smacked me in the head. HERSLEY, PENNSLVANIA. In that area. So please tell me how did I do? . Janice Dillon Muncie, Indiana

  26. I would have to say my dream home would be on the coast of the Olympic peninsula in Washington State. The entire exterior wall facing the ocean would be windows. Open floor plan, kitchen island would have a cook top so even when I'm inside cooking I can watch the sunset. A large deck or patio area so I can sit outside in the mornings with my coffee and newspaper, listen to the waves hit the shore, look at the Olympic mountains and start my day completely relaxed and peaceful. Hawaii is nice but it gets really hot and humid there. I prefer rain to heat.

  28. I really don't understand way Arkansas is never on HGTV or DIY *Yard crashers Kitchen crashers etc. I watch the show's all the time I even DVR them just to get some of the good ideals from them, I think the Ozarks would be a great place to do a Cabin. My dream home would be a home where all my kids could have a room or a place to stay so they would have no worry's of a house payment I have my 16 yr old still home she comes first them my other daughter and her husband and two boys my son and his new wife, home is to small for everyone on the holiday's so everyone goes there own way it's very depressing sometimes my oldest daughter is in TENN her husband is in IRAQ for a year as for me one room with a TV to watch football a big Kitchen for the Wife and kids & grand kids can play cook or what ever then a big family room so everyone will fit on XMAS and a big dinning room for Thanksgiving a nice back yard for the grand kids to play which we don't have right now it's kind of small that's all no dream of anything to crazy that's all family is more important
