HGTV Dream Home 2012: Clue Two

Another Scrabble board clue comes your way today. I’ve read through your comments on Clue One and I am shocked that one person has hit the nail right on the head. What a smart bunch you are!

Take a look at each word. There may be one or two that lead you closer to the state and the location. Post your comments – don’t be afraid to go out on a limb.

  1. VAIL and REEL……..refer to a ski pass. The home is going to be located near the mountains where snow-skiing is available to the home-owner.

    • Yup 2011 sure was- I think we are due for a change of scene!

Nebraska on May 18, 2011 at 8:09 pm
    • I changed my mind. I think that next year's home is going to be the exact opposite of the winter ski home in Vermont. HGTV is turning the tide……key words: tide and flip.

Summer on May 18, 2011 at 10:28 pm
  2. I think the home will be in California and the book in the back is "Sally Goes to the Mountains" so it can be anywhere with mountains.

    5Baseball on May 18, 2011 at 7:54 pm
  3. BID, LOVE, MEN……..translated as fraternal love, but not the "city" of brotherly love. Because, the Dream Home is not going to be located in a major city, like Philadelphia. The Dream Home is going to be located in the great outdoors, near the mountains, and in a town where the people are nice and friendly….or fraternal love.

  5. Hmmm. Mary said one person hit the nail on the head. So that would mean that someone got it exactly right – city and state maybe. So there could be others that guessed the state more than once. That thinking doesn't help much….
Nothing in particular is sticking out to me on the Scrabble board(s) – all so vague and could take me in every direction. I hope that next year's DH is in a region of the US that has not had a dream home yet. I'm going to use the standard federal regions and see which regions have not had a DH yet
Breaking it down this way eliminates most regions leaving 3:
Region II: New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands
Region V: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin
Region VII: Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska
There hasn't been a DH on the water in a while so I'm going to guess somewhere in the Great Lakes area. Lake Michigan is wonderful. So many towns to choose from I'll have to give that some more thought….

  6. Sally books

If (1) we don't get a new clue by Thursday and/or (2) nobody knows the actual text of the Sally books, then (3), I'm going to the bookstore and read them in order to find out which words are the "one or two" that don't belong. I still believe the outliers are the actual clues.

    • ABSOLUTELY!!! xD

  11. I don't think that there is going to be any canyon near the 2012 home. The clues…..canyon and quarry have something in common. Both are holes in the ground. A canyon is a natural wonder, and a quarry is a man-made occurence.
Could it mean that the Dream Home is going to be a man-made structure, and the location is rich with nature and beauty?

Summer on May 18, 2011 at 10:18 pm
  12. I think it could be Tacoma, Washington. It's called the "city of destiny" (that name started in 1887), you can fish (that's where the "fin" and "reel" comes in), there are several different species of "weasels" (they are always said to steal "eggs"), there are "moose" and "bears" there, there are also wolves there (where the "woof" comes in), and I think they have quarries where they mine "marble" and "quartz" there. Also, there are vineyards and wineries in Tacoma, so maybe that's where "vine" came in. That's what I came up with anyway. I'm probably wrong, but it's worth a try ;-)

swissacake on May 18, 2011 at 10:19 pm
    • I used to live there so I hope to goodness that it's NOT Tacoma. Sorry.

  14. TIDE:
Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun and the rotation of the Earth.
FLIP: To rotate. The moon and earth rotate.
    WISH:
    You…."Wish upon a Star".

Key words: Star, Moon, Sun. All of these you can see in the sky. Montana is the "Big Sky Country".

Summer on May 18, 2011 at 10:40 pm
  15. MONTANA
The western third of Montana contains numerous mountain ranges. Smaller, "island ranges" are found in the central third of the state, for a total of 77 named ranges of the Rocky Mountains. This geographical fact is reflected in the state's name, derived from the Spanish word montaña (mountain).

Montana has several nicknames, none official, including: "The Treasure State" and "Big Sky Country", and slogans that include "Land of the Shining Mountains" and more recently, "The Last Best Place".

A cornhusk is used in the making of tamales. Tamales is a Spanish word….The Spanish word montana means mountain.

Summer on May 18, 2011 at 10:50 pm
  16. Odd and One: Refer to the word single, or unattached. So…..a single family home, unattached. Of course! Aren't all the Dream Homes this way?

Summer on May 18, 2011 at 10:52 pm
  17. Crime and Live: So…..a crime where no one ends up dead. A location with a very low murder rate. That's what we all want. Zero would be even better.

Summer on May 18, 2011 at 10:54 pm
  18. Rattlesnakes and Toads……I believe that both live in dry climates. Montana? Near the mountains and in the open ranges? I am too tired to bother looking it up.

Summer on May 18, 2011 at 10:55 pm
  19. Fur and Opussum…….A winter coat. So, a location that has cold winters. I am thinking Montana.

Summer on May 18, 2011 at 10:57 pm
    • There are tons of opossums in Washington, so I'm still thinking it's Tacoma, Washington (my earlier post). Montana would be GREAT though.

swissacake on May 18, 2011 at 10:59 pm
  20. DIVE: Sky diving. Montana is Big Sky Country. See also above……Tide, Wish, and Flip.

Summer on May 18, 2011 at 11:06 pm
  21. Peanutbutter and Banana: The Elvis Sandwich. And like the saying goes……..Elvis has left the building!
The show is over, and it is time to go home. Goodnight all!

  22. Cami — FYI — the first link in your most recent post (about an hour earlier from mine) brings up a error message. Maybe you can go back and correct the URL link.

In any event, see my following comment regarding your second link.

    • I didn't see your comment. I just corrected it with an example of a custom home. Dare i dream too big? I think that's a ohana in the back of the first home.
i still don't see your comment.

  23. Hello to my dear friends RJMStone, and MeKhazandSimi. Come on over to the blog if you can, we need some of your input. I know that both of you are puzzle makers, and code crackers. We could use a little help from you guys– I think that we are getting pretty close to finding the location of the new HGTV DH>

Janzee on May 18, 2011 at 11:42 pm
  24. And now, you've gone and REALLY done it this time, Cami. The second link to the Kukui'ula home is close to heart-stopping. What a beauty! Will I have to sell off my holdings here in California and nab one of these dream homes before they're all gone?! You'll have to take full responsibility for my decision to do so — I hadn't yet seen this particular home on the Kukui'ula website. I'd be quite happy to spend the rest of my blogging days there.

What's not to love? This home has an entry lanai, 2,752 square feet with 3 bedrooms, 3 1/2 bathrooms. Two of the bedrooms are master suites, each with its own screened-in lanai, and there are two outdoor garden showers. The plan features an open kitchen, dining, and family room area with a large rear lanai and an area for a patio, pool and garden area. The color of the home's exterior, a deep gray/blue reflects the lighter blues of the sky and serves as a perfect backdrop for a lush and vibrant garden of tropical color and fruit trees. For those who missed the link: http://kukuiula.com/Pages/Realestate/detailview.a

By the way, the current temp there was 79 degrees, with a high of 80 and a low of 73. Well, I guess somebody's got to do it, and it might as well be me!!

DBCoop on May 18, 2011 at 11:46 pm
    • I can totally see you turning a home like that into your favorite Balinese style. I sure hope Jack gets a good deal on our HGTV Dream Home. Just like Stowe (prices) but he made it a GO with that gorgeous Dream Home in the snow.
I hope there were some nice trade winds, even 80 is getting up there, however I usually only feel the heat when I get into the car. At a place like Kukui 'ula I can walk everywhere or swim in the pool all day. No car required.

Cami on May 18, 2011 at 11:54 pm
      • Heat? There are nearly always cooling trade winds, which is one thing that makes the Hawaiian Islands weather so pleasant. Yes, the sun can be intense at times, but then all you have to do is take a dip in the pool, or sit back in a comfy chair on the lanai. We're talkin' laid back Hawaii here after all.

DBCoop on May 19, 2011 at 12:02 am
      • Architecturally, I love the home and the layout. I'd certainly add some Asian/Balinese/Thai influences here and there to the interior through fabric, color, art work and furnishings.

DBCoop on May 19, 2011 at 12:26 am
    • By the way, I failed to mention that this particular home sits in the Makai (oceanside) neighborhood, is lot number 17 at the end of a cul-de-sac, and one of the closest homes to the ocean, overlooking a dedicated greenbelt view. Just doesn't get any better!

DBCoop on May 18, 2011 at 11:56 pm
    • You keep showing pictures like this Coop, and you will have me going gaga over Hawaii like Cami! ^_^

EdinOregon on May 19, 2011 at 1:08 am
    • In your travels Coop, have you seen anything in kukuiula.com about solar energy homes? I am trying to get the letters on the que to offer up some info about builders of unique solar homes. I did find some info about solar farms that have been set up in Kauai to supply neighborhood energy. I'll see if I can find the site- it might be KAD. Kauai Association of developers

  25. I think we got an unexpectedly quick jump start right out of the gate with Clue Number One, and MARY is going to keep us treading water for awhile. We can't hone in on the Dream Home location too quickly, or we'll be playing Scrabble for weeks by ourselves until we're back on schedule.

  28. Paw Paw is a town in Morgan County, West Virginia, United States.

On George Washington's many trips west, he usually took the Winchester-Cumberland Road which closely parallels today's CR 29/51 through Paw Paw. The Potomac River, which embraces the old town in one of its bends, was navigated as early as 1750. Travelers heading west often crossed the gap in the mountains here, some settling to farm land along the river.

WVBea on May 19, 2011 at 7:43 am
  29. As Ohio University's Post reports, Gov. Ted Strickland made the pawpaw Ohio's native state fruit. State Senator Jimmy Stewart had proposed the pawpaw for recognition for the past 5 years, seeing it as a way to bring in tourists. The Ohio Pawpaw Festival will celebrate its 11th birthday this year.

  30. Marble is limestone that has crystallized naturally over a period of time. Marble is classified into four groups, Groups A, B, C, and D

The main difference between limestone and marble is that limestone is a sedimentary rock, typically composed of calcium carbonate fossils, and marble is a metamorphic rock

WVBea on May 19, 2011 at 7:56 am
  31. I just joined in the game (though have done this in years past). I see recent comments about Paw Paw. Is that a clue? I'm asking because I"m currently saving to buy a cottage on the Paw Paw River in Michigan. It leads into Lake Michigan. There is a new development called Harbor Shores (I visit St. Joseph, Michigan a few times a year because I love it so much and I would love to have a cottage there.) Check it out: http://harborshoreslife.com/about/vision

  32. "Oh, what a beautiful morning….." are the words that came to mind when Oscar Hammerstein woke
up at his Bucks County Farm in Pennsylvania. He and his family moved to the area to find a
peaceful, bucolic retreat. As he looked out of his window, another line came to mind, "The corn is
as high as an elephant's ear." He was attracted to the views of rolling hills, stone farm houses with
red barns, and dense tree foilage. (cornhusk, elephant)

It's not a coincidence that Hammerstein and other famous world travelers chose Bucks County to
reside in. Its founder, William Penn, planned its early development. The Quakers were also
looking for a peaceful, bucolic retreat (love, destiny).

Today, Bucks County stills offers a retreat from big city life with all of the same beautiful settings of rolling hills and farm houses with a rich heritage of folk art, colonial history, and a simple, slower pace of life.

    • Hi Dearest, what a beautiful poetic post. I am glad to that you are "sticking to it". I think that after all is said and done the solution may be Pennsylvania or Hawaii

Janzee on May 19, 2011 at 6:12 pm
      • Janzee, I am always fascinaated with how talented people like Oscar Hammerstein were
inspired. It looks like he just needed a little peace and quiet to get the creative process going!

  33. So because we are on a roll with some of the scrabble words that are more meaningful perhaps than others, I am still wondering if there may be a development name in the sea if words. Knowing the HGTV crew as we do, my thought is that they have found an environmentally friendly subdevelopment, and will probably extend the GOLD STANDARD to the DH. By the way Kaui has some solar farms that supply exclusive energy to a few subdevelopments. More on this later. P.S. who found Kaui, and how did you come up with this jewel of an island- probably the most beautiful of all of the Hawaiian islands?
