HGTV Dream Home 2012: Clue Three

Happy Thursday!

Okay. I admit it. The Scrabble board clues were a bit of wild goose chase. But still, I am awed by your commitment to this cause.

Today I thought I’d make things a bit more straightforward. This poll may lead you in the right direction.

  1. Ok, perhaps a compass-enthusiast out there can clarify something….Can the conveniently-cropped-compass-photo be hiding the direction-pointing needle? Then we would be looking straight towards the south-southeast. Brings us to DBCoop's original Georgia posting (which was specific in Clue 1.)

  2. Thank you! This has been one of the most interesting and fascinating experiences: My first venture into the “Blogosphere”. It is really neat to see how each person brings such a unique perspective to a situation. Given that we were each provided with the same information and then comparing the many different conclusions and destinations is very kool. When the location finally is revealed; it will be interesting to look back, and see how each of us applied our own set of experiences, to the snippets of information presented to us. There are so many unique ways to interpret the information. Most important lesson I bring away from this: I am going to try harder to keep a more open mind; stay focused on the facts, and try to see things from another person’s perspective. Everyone has something unique to offer to a discussion. This has been a lot of fun, thanks for the opportunity. Toodaloo

    • Well put Ashtabulannie. Being on this blog is like being in a college literature or philosophy class sometimes. I read all of the Harry Potter books with my kids. One of the best quotes from Dumbledore is "Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open." I think all the bloggers here are incredible and our identical aims are to figure out how Mary's mind works and to guess the DH location.

    • This is the first time i have ever really done anything with "Blogging" and I must say I like reading other peoples opinions and seeing how they work things over, and I love Coop's limericks. So yes thank you all for being so great!

  3. I was thinking that the Main Page Compass point-that-we-are-missing, so to speak, is pointing to around 159 degrees, the longitude of Kukui'ula, Kauai, Hawaii.

Now if can find a clue for the 22.8 degrees Latitude were there. Maybe Mary will give us a little latitude…

Jayintexas on May 23, 2011 at 4:34 pm
    • Good eye Jay. It does look like 159. :D . When I looked on Google Earth it was, or so I thought 21.

Cami on May 23, 2011 at 4:48 pm
      • oops! I typed 22.8 in error. I got this off the web –

Kukuiula is a community or populated place (Class Code U6) located in Kauai County at latitude 21.885 and longitude -159.486

Jayintexas on May 23, 2011 at 4:55 pm
        • Kind of interesting… the date Hawaii was made a State 8-21-1959. Mix things up a bit and presto chango you have 21.8 lat 159 long. We can just throw out the extra 9;)

Cami on May 23, 2011 at 5:40 pm
          • Now That's cool!. Casting out 9's works for me.

Jayintexas on May 23, 2011 at 6:00 pm
          • Perfect Atlas Trotter. I knew someone could figure it out. Technically we can round 159.486 down to zero since 48 and 49 is under 50. Perfect now we have it. Now if Mary includes that in one of her clues we'll be ready.:D

Cami on May 23, 2011 at 9:37 pm
          • OK here ya go. I found a place for the cast-away. I thought of this on the ride home.
Place the 9 at the end of the 21.8 and you get 21.89 which is the two digit round-up of 21.885!
Brilliant how you figured out that the Statehood date was Kukui'ula's latitude! Glad I could help.

Jayintexas on May 23, 2011 at 9:42 pm
          • Hey Jay, I'm guessing Atlas Trotter and you rode home on the same train together. I can't believe he stole your work. I wouldn't sit by him anymore. LOL:D

          • My home laptop was logged on as AT. I forgot password when I signed on at office so made new one. 'i tried to delete the AT post but you were too quick…..

Jayintexas on May 23, 2011 at 10:59 pm
          • Sorry about that Jay, I got excited when someone found a place for that 9– that I was sheepishly trying to hide behind my back. The guy on the train story works too.^_^ Have a great night.

  4. Was this compass photo taken BEFORE the pole shift, or after the shift began?

    Debra G. on May 23, 2011 at 4:40 pm
    • I was told by DB that those little pics really weren 't part of the clue. Because the last pic there was a tri-level in the desert. Then another time, there was a modern home with a pool & a palm tree. All of these Picture were there during this Dream Home blog session. They are there to trick us, per DBCoop. At least that's what I was told.

        • Coop, should we consider the "c" or the "t" with regard to the word excrutiate on the scrabble board? We have a K and possibly O and/or N from the word on with the c or t. I still think the word "on" is suspect.

boomer on May 23, 2011 at 8:33 pm
          • boomer, I think that by the time Mischievous MARY got to the word "excrutiate" on the Scrabble board, she was laughing so hard at the confusion her wild goose chase clues would cause that she was no longer paying close attention to spelling.

Besides, it wouldn't matter anyway, considering our own frazzled state of mind as we were being led further down the garden path. Now whether that garden path is a Bucks County wooded trail, a Georgia peanut farm furrow, a Virginia country footpath or a Kauai tropical waterfall trek is where we must focus our best sleuthing efforts.

  5. Still NY.
The Statue of Liberty is in New York, and the clue WISH refers to a birthday wish. Our nation's birthday is celebrated every July 4th. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of our freedom.
    Long Island……2012!!!

  6. I just read stephenwnagy's post and like the logic. Perhaps Last year, some of the clues like clue four with the pic of the wrong way sign, could have been simply a place holder. A couple of those clues, and you would probably agree, were put in the mix to just plain mix us up, and that it did. So where do we go with the logic that we have? Perhaps Mary is suggesting that we "navigate" across country, or choose a route to the shortest parallel- in that case my choice would be California and head west. There are no red lights, at this point, so maybe you could hop on a plane as the crow flys and wind up in Hawaii. California is certainly the shortest route.

Janzee on May 23, 2011 at 5:27 pm
    • To me the total opposite of Hawaii is Alaska!

One thing we may want to note is that Reno NV is further west of some parts of CA.

Nebraska on May 23, 2011 at 5:52 pm
      • Alaska— now that's a thought Nebraska. Maybe Mary is giving us the cold shouder and clues that could very well be Alaska bound. Snow shoes? I didn't see that in the que.

        • Janzee and Nebraska you just made the JerseyCaptain a very happy person with your thoughts of Alaska. Jersey you still around??

  9. You know…I was looking at that compass and thinking it was pointing MW and SE. Except it is pointing a little more north and a little more south then west or east. Then I looked at the 190 and 300 on the compass and out of curiosity did a search for route numbers in certain states. Georgia, Virginia, and Hawaii all have route 190's. But then again so do CA, MO, WI, KS, TX, and TN. My heart is telling me it has to be Georgia. Barring that Hawaii is my next guess.

I just had another route thought. Could it be along route 166? There is one in VA, GA, TN, TX, and CA. I was looking at the approximate area of the compasses hands on the compass. Being fanciful…

  10. Here is a hot item,– I just went back to clue two and for all of us alphabetarians there are some books on the cushion. One of the book's titles reads Salley Goes to Maui. In that old Salley series, did Salley in fact go to Hawaii?

Janzee on May 23, 2011 at 6:08 pm
    • It reads, "Sally goes to the Mountains" actually. Not Maui…sorry.

Namuha on May 23, 2011 at 6:11 pm
      • Okay so maybe Mountains of Hawaii. Parker Canyon on the big island of Hawaii would do just fine.

Janzee on May 23, 2011 at 6:38 pm
      • On this blog we have a tendency to rewrite the music, and an entire series if necessary. Sometimes this nonlinear is just what the dr. ordered to figure out these clues, and they get fast and furious so stay tuned.

Janzee on May 23, 2011 at 10:00 pm
    • Yeah, I looked up the "Sally" books & there isn't a Maui. There are 7 books total-The Vet, The Mountains, The beach, etc… I can't remember them all right this moment.

MsTrishFl on May 23, 2011 at 6:27 pm
      • There are 6 fiction books and 2 non fiction. The 2 non are the Dog Chapel – he built a real chapel for dogs in VT and another book focused on his art works. He was a talented and creative man. Sad he left us so soon.

          • His place in VT was on Dog Mountain. And Sally was his real black lab!

From WiKI: Each year, Huneck and his wife held a gathering known as Dog Fest at his Dog Mountain studio. People brought their dogs for a day of relaxation. Contests were held for categories such as loudest bark, biggest/smallest dog, best dog kiss, etc. The dogs were let off their leashes and allowed to run free and play with other dogs.

[Huneck was despondent over having to lay off employees in January 2010 and had been dealing with depression. On January 7, 2010, after driving to a psychiatrist's office in Littleton, New Hampshire, Huneck shot himself and died. He was 61 years old.]

          • Thanks for the information. I had no idea. I mean I knew how old he was when he died, but that's all. I didn't know anything about him until starting this blog.

    • Now if there was a book sitting on those cushions titled "Jack T Goes to Maui", THAT would truly be a significant clue!

DBCoop on May 23, 2011 at 7:00 pm
      • In the Jack London HaleakalaI novels,Jack was a sailor, and one of his voyages included Hawaii. …. His idea was to make the sun go slower. Perhaps he was the first Hawaiian astronomer. …but our Jack, anything we call him, but plain Jack, or Jack by any other name, has more than sailed the seven seas, and has embarked on a landfall for HGTV 2012 destiny.

  11. After reading and rereading MARY's comments on the Clue Three blog thread, I wonder if what she said and what she was really thinking were one and the same?

At this point, this is how I'm currently reinterpreting them: Oh happy days! Okay. I gleefully admit it. The Scrabble board clues were nothing more than a wild goose chase. And still, I am amazed you haven't been committed for cause. Today as always, I thought I'd make things a bit more stressful. This poll may lead you to distraction.

A prophecy fulfilled! Only Clue Four could possibly pull us out of this slump. Talk about a long and winding road that leads to Dream Home 2012.

DBCoop on May 23, 2011 at 6:10 pm
    • Yeah, every time I ask for a new clue, then it comes & I'm more confused. When does she make it a little more clear? Mary says, "straight forward", that's because she knows the answer. xD :p

  13. I finally went to Wiki- although I detest the method, and found these books of Stephen Huneck:

    1.Sally goes to the Farm
    2.Sally goes to the Vet
    3.Sally goes to the Mountains
    4.Sally goes to the Beach
    5.Sally gets a Job
    6.Sally’s Snow Adventure

Mary once I resort to the "fail site" it really is time for a new clue.

That was odd, same name as the Doc. Anyways, I feel no pain after plenty of these and hopefully I'll sleep well until Mary's next clue. Before I forget, I've experienced two side effects. Double vision and the Hawaiian blues….imagine that. ^_^ B)

  16. The Sally books are told from the dog's point of view and brought to life through charming and brightly colored woodcut prints, this endearing story of Sally's vacation is the perfect companion to a child's own trip to the beach or any new place.

    About the author
STEPHEN HUNECK is an internationally acclaimed painter and sculptor. He is the owner of Stephen Huneck galleries in Woodstock, Vermont; Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, Massachusetts; Aspen, Colorado; and Santa Fe, New Mexico. His hand-carved furniture, sculpture, and woodcut prints are included in various museum collections, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Museum of American Folk Art, New York. He lives in Vermont.

  17. I think some of the words on scrabble board and Mary's comment related to Sally books. From a review certain sentences jumped out: -an impossibly posed Sally walking up the side of a tree – She climbs up a tree and appears entranced by the "lovely song" of a cardinal. Sally, eager to make friends with these wild animals- sidles out on a branch and introduces herself to an owl – On a particularly funny page, one needs to turn the book lengthwise to see Sally standing directly beneath a huge, rather dismayed or amused moose-and to read that she sees tracks but no animal. The fact that Sally is dreaming, not actually having these adventures yet, is made clear when she finds a bush full of canned dog food. Another treat is watching Huneck bring together in this dream vision the things that dogs like best-eating and sleeping and sniffing things out. Not sure how this helps us.

AZSonny on May 23, 2011 at 7:54 pm
  18. DBCoop was talking about a long and winding road; the words immediately led us to this song. Two of the Osmonds are hearing impaired. They are signing in this song. Just thought we would share and take a short music break. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HElyuAp58U&fe

  19. OK. I have always only read all of the posts and have never posted, so this is my virgin post! I say Hawaii. I want it to be Hawaii. In Hawaii, you have the surf and the mountains coming together. There has been a bear in Hawaii. Someone raised black bear for the circus and one escaped and was seen but never caught for years. I don't remember all of the other clues, but I don't think every word on the scrabble board has meaning… it was just meant to drive everyone crazy. It worked.

    Susiee1099 on May 23, 2011 at 8:04 pm
  20. I don't get it but a lot of the animals listed on scrabble are found in Sally books. Below is more from the review I read:

The unremarkable story tells about the canine's car trip to the mountains with her owner. At the end, readers learn that all of the creatures Sally encountered-a raccoon, a bear, rabbits, a moose, and more-were a dream, and when she wakes up, it's time for breakfast in the mountains.

AZSonny on May 23, 2011 at 8:05 pm
    • I still think that "Mountains" represents Stowe. If you look closely, it appears "Mountains" is being taken off the pile. If we could figure out the title of the next book on the pile, I think it would reveal something about 2012 DH.

boomer on May 23, 2011 at 8:14 pm
    • I think the next book on the pile is "Sally Goes to the Farm." Not much help because a farm could be anywhere. If it had been "Sally Goes to the Beach," it would have eliminated lots of locations.

boomer on May 23, 2011 at 8:21 pm
  21. Oh, and I think we're all having way too much fun in the Dream Home blog these days!

Meanwhile, can you give us another delicious clue, MARY, and get us back on track, our noses to the grindstone, hot on the trail, put the ball in our court, get us back to basics, toss out a real blue chip clue we can bank on, one that's the cat's pyjamas, with all the bells and whistles — in other words, the bottom line, the be-all and end-all of Dream Home clues?

'Cause at this point, without beating around the bush, frankly we're back to square one, our backs to the wall. It's been no bed of roses, and we've been burning the candle at both ends trying to make sense of these clues. It's like having the worst bad hair day, going back to the drawing board, a baptism of fire.

Not that we mind barking up the wrong tree occasionally, but I'm beginning to feel like I've got bats in the belfry, a bee in our bonnets, our goose is cooked, and we've bitten off more than we can chew.

Now I know that we started out a little overly optimistic, believing that all our geese were swans, and I know that beggars can't be choosers, but before we beat a hasty retreat, could you please bite the bullet and bring home the bacon with the ultimate clue that'll just be the bee's knees!

    We'll be forever grateful.

DBCoop on May 23, 2011 at 8:16 pm
    • Blue Hawaiian Coop and a Mai Tai, "you can do it"! See what I'm becoming Mary?? I now need a counselor and I'll have to join AA if we don't get what Coop has asked for.

I'm on my knees Mary begging please….A clue not a tease…excuse me I have to sneeze and here comes a wheeze…so sorry to displease. My knees feel like there in a deep freeze. Oh if we only had the pleasantries of Mary's fourth clue that appears like syllepses.

    Susiee1099 on May 23, 2011 at 8:35 pm
  23. I truly and completely believe I have lost it. I mean, "seriously lost it". By now we should be closer to zeroing in on ground DH. Coop has lost his identity, some appear to have lost focus, and I count myself as one who has certifiably lost my mind trying to figure this out.

I want it to be Virginia. All indications are it is Hawaii.

Maybe that is why Mary is being so coy with her clues. Hawaii is like no other state in the nation. How can you throw crumbs for clues when they are made of coconuts and bananas?

Mary can you please just taunt us with WHICH island it is? That way I can go into mourning for my Virginia/PA/DC Tara connection for another year.

Please Mary I need closure. The suspense is killing me.

    Debra G. on May 23, 2011 at 8:50 pm
    • There's still hope for Virginia, Debra G. I think I distinctly remember a reference to the movie "Who's Afraid of Virginia woof." MARY placed it as a subtle clue, I believe, on the Scrabble board for Clue Two.

DBCoop on May 23, 2011 at 10:02 pm
      • I can't do subtle any more. No, I am now in need of direct, in your face, here it is-Virginia, no it isn't-Virginia, say hello to Hawaii, hang-ten, goat herding, rattlesnake charming direct clue. Stick a fork in me, I feel soooo done….

Ed, I hope such things would not befall you if you went out 'frog-gigging' one night, LOL.

  26. Mary you took a chance and decided not to post a clue today. You must have thought the bloggers could hold it together for another 24 hours, right? Hmmmm tomorrow is the 24th, maybe that's going to be part of the clue, why else would you risk mass craze'teriao.0:S
    There's definitely a bit of craze'teria tonight.
Hmmm there must be something about not posting a clue on the 23rd that is a clue in itself. Tomorrow is Tuesday. Tuesday the 24th… what does that mean? Isn't there and island in the Pacific called Tuesday or Wednesday? Sunday? Hmmm what if Mary doesn't post a new clue tomorrow what will become of us then? Tuesday 5/24/2011, surely this will be the clue tomorrow. Let's figure it out before Mary has a chance> :So.0^_^

Cami on May 23, 2011 at 9:27 pm
    • Ha! I got it. Mary didn't post any clues on the 23. 0 clues today. Do you know what that means? 2+3 is 5. Hawaii 5-0. All because Mary posted no clue. Way to go Mary, and we thought you didn't care.;)

Cami on May 23, 2011 at 9:54 pm
  27. West of California doesn't mean the state. It could be California, OH. That would make more sense to the clues. If you look at clue One, it has the word Canyon in it. The deepest canyon in the southeast is Little River Canyon on Lookout Mountain, which is near Mentone, Alabama. Many of the clues would support this location. I think Hawaii was just a diversion.

  29. I know this is a little way out but you know how words rub off on each other. What if the larger board clues are a trubute to Stephen Huneck. In his book Salley Goes to the Beach, Huneck offers a quiet tribute to the magic of a sunny day in the sand and surf. Could this be one of sunny Hawaii's beaches? Moreover the wonder of this book is the artwork. Internationally known artist Huneck created every woodcut print by hand, drawing the design in crayon, then carving one block of wood for each color in the appropriate shape. The result was a stunning collection of brightly colored woodcut prints showing spry Sally diving in the ocean, riding boats, and digging holes in the sand. So some of the words are seen throughout his children's novels like moose, fin, dive

Janzee on May 24, 2011 at 12:58 am
    • I noticed this too, but I still can't zero in on a location. In the book, the beach was an "island in the ocean" and could apply to VA (at least 2 islands are part of state), GA (has numerious islands) or HI (the only island state).

AZSonny on May 24, 2011 at 1:09 am
  30. Okay Mary, I originally said it was Hawaii- North Shore area, Arizona- Scottsdale area, or California- Carmel area. Then, I felt I was directed further east, so I chose Nashville, Tn or Charlottesville, Va. Now, I feel very strongly about Hawaii again. So, I will be very specific. I feel very strongly about my original Hawaiian pick of the North Shore area of Oahua. Specifically- Mokuleia or Waimea, Oahua (northwest side of the island).
Now, I would like to add- Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii (west side). They have a lot of goats (your favorite) & lava (orange). Also, many other things that I mentioned leading to Hawaii in the 1st CLUE's blog/comments.
Basically, any of the clues this year could be traced to somewhere or something in regards to Hawaii. So, if Hawaii isn't this Dream Home (2012), then you're definitely set up for future clues when you do make Hawaii the Dream Home.
    So, now that I have gone mad, been driven bonkers & headed up stream without a paddle— I am ready for Clue #4. :S =/ o.0 :p ^_^ :p :* <3<3<3

  33. "Oh, what a beautiful morning!" I'm still thinking about the magnificent countryside in Bucks County,
PA, that inspired Oscar Hammerstein to burst out into the words of the lyrics for "Oklahoma". To
ensure that the "corn was as high as an elephant's ear" in production some experts produced
their own on set. It grew over 16 feet tall and there was some consideration given to changing the
lyrics to read "higher than an elephant's ear"!

North, south, east, or west…..it doesn't matter which way you go in Bucks County, you will find
sky diving in Perkasie, scuba diving in the Lehigh Valley springs, or cliff diving in any number
of choice spots in Pennsylvania. You can go out on a limb at Morris Arboretum and visit the other 320
attractions in the Philly area. Shopping can be an experience in itself at the colonial style shops at
Peddler's Village or you can haggle to your delight at Rice's Market. Back to Bucks County!

  40. The rattlesnake, a symbol of the colonies during the Revolution, was also the representation
used by Benjamin Franklin before the Revolution. Angered by the royal policy of sending convicts to
the colony, Benjamin Franklin's article in the Pennsylvania Gazette suggested a cargo of rattlesnakes should be deposited in public places of entertainment and noblemen's gardens in England to make a
point. It was also used as a symbol of the 1st Batallion of Westmoreland County, PA.

  41. I think that the location could be Massachusetts. Either Boston, the Cape Cod Peninsula, Martha's Vineyard, or Nantucket Island.
In 1974, Steven Spielberg filmed the movie Jaws on Martha's Vineyard. The clues: Fin, excruciate, and vise(a vise has jaws).
Also, Hawaii…a remote island. Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island can only be reached by boat or airplane, just like Hawaii. Nook refers to a location that is remote and secluded.
    Vine…….Martha's Vineyard.
Tide, dive, reel……all indicate a location that is on the Ocean.
A drum has a shell, and a cornhusk is the shell of the corn. Shells are found at the beach…..the Cape Cod National Seashore.
Mad, flip…..Dam. The highest concentration of Dams in the US are found in New England.
Adjuster…..a location that has hurricanes, an insurance adjuster.
Love…..the Cape Cod Peninsula is a very popular wedding destination, including hotels and resorts.

    That all for now.

Alicesoneysmom — hmm, off watching YouTube videos I guess
AZSonny — last seen headed towards the mountains with Sally in tow.
boomer — out doing Elvis impersonations, or so we're told
Cami — check, I see your hand. One hand will do, Cami. No need for two fists in the air.

CplusE — hunting for scavengers at last report
Debra G — clearly in the room and egging on the rebellion
DeerSpring — oh yes, in the library, doing research on Pennsylvania
EdinOregon — gone fishing — again!
Janzee — the only one with a legal excuse, she's scoping out the Urban Oasis in Chicago for us
Jayintexas — off to all points of the compass
LLColeman — present, but only barely — still recovering from hysterical fishing expedition
lucyourdog — at therapy appointment with Ms. Mai Tai, followed by session with Coco Loco
MsTrishFL — currently cruising Alligator Alley

I'm sure all the other friendly bloggers will be arriving shortly to help us put the pressure on MARY to release the next clue before things get out of control.

  46. Geez Ashtabulannie, great work, when I clicked to respond to you your entire name lit up in blue. Wonder if that's a sign? Several folks like TJwillwin, have created a good case for Pennsylvania, We've seen it in the past where you can tork the word meanings to and get them to sing out the name of a state. What do you make of the Sally Books on the ottaman next to the scrabble board?

Janzee on May 24, 2011 at 4:19 pm
  47. Ashtabulannie this is a significant finding. Could you please repost this on the main board. I am going to google myself to check out the images. Isn't this exciting about how many directions this is going. I found a Rhododendrom that looks alot like the mountain clinging shrub that grows well in the higher elevations in Kauaii. I am anxious to see your "Mary" tree, and hope and hope this is it.

Janzee on May 25, 2011 at 8:25 pm
  48. Ashtabulannie, you are in that mix of amazing folks. I was just talking to friends today and discussing the brightness of this group. Everyone including you is hungry to learn. They are inspired by art, design, research, every topic you name it. I may be using the wrong term, but what I mean by the main board, is when you scroll down to make a comment it shows up for everyone. The "fig finding", as I like to call it, was posted to me. Yes, everyone has finally made the discovery, but I think you were the first. Ash, come whenever you like, and please dont feel you have to research the whole day. I know it really takes up the day, but oh so much fun

Janzee on May 25, 2011 at 11:59 pm
  49. Agreed I checked out the Rock Fig, and the leaves appear to be a little broader in the pics I saw, and the trunk is more subtantial. This species loves to cling to rocks and typically becomes an epiphtye in higher elevations. Before you sign off take a look at a few species of Rhododendrom.
