HGTV Dream Home 2012 Location
At last, we announce the location of our 2012 home. This year, a river will run through the back yard (no joke). If you’d like to learn more about the neighborhood, please visit rivermeadowsranch.com. Jack, take it away …

What a grand location!
H_S I love your new avi. I'm looking at what I think are clouds with sunset reflecting, but it turns into mountains when I click on it. I love them both. Are you trying out new ones. I've been considering shopping for new pics too.
Yeah, it's time for a new pic – Many changes over the past year!
The mountains are nice when viewed large, but not in tiny format.
The sunset was taken from our back yard here in Colorado.
"Red sky at night, sailor's delight." Even though you are land-locked, HS, you can still enjoy the sunset!
I have seen many beautiful sunsets, and sunrises, here in the mountains. They truly are a delight!
What a beautiful vision to behold every evening H_S! So glad you're happy. Hope that all goes well for the both of you!
Hi Lessie! I am hoping that you will post a suggestion to my post, "Suggestions Wanted," which is on page 4 of the Location topic. It would be greatly appreciated!
It really is, Living here has been great, and i'm excited to see how the project turns out
Girlygirl, if you're anywhere near the 2012 Dream Home, please keep us posted! Thanks.
WOW, what a place. I couldn't even imagine what it would be like to live somewhere like that. I hope they have a Home Depot there.
I love it!!! Thanks Jack! I had no idea you would choose Utah, but I am very happy that you did. It looks and sounds like a great place to live! I can hardly wait to see the home. The scenery and the outdoor sports and activities, along with the dining and shopping make this location the best you have chosen so far. I absolutely love it!!!
yes, this area is definitely a Gem. My husband and I, California natives, always talk about how people across the country don't have a clue on how amazing Utah really is and we joke that we like keeping that secret. I guess that is all about to change.
Yeah! I can't wait to check it out! Thank you so much Mary and all of the HGTV crew!
Can't wait to learn more about Utah and the area of the new Dream Home…I will admit that is one area that I don't know much about but Jack always has a way of finding amazing places.
It is very pretty there but long winters. Park City is part ghost town part very high end. But a great place to go skiing.
NO WAY!!!!
WAY! And I gave you all a thumbs up!
Thanks, Ed:) I responded to someone to learn I was running in the negative. Nice…
You could NEVER be a negative, Debra G! You're always aces and +++++ to me:)
Thank you, areeve04. It was quite a surprise to see such a negative response.
I appreciate your kind reply:D <3<3<3
I doubt you have a negative bone in your body! Blog on, I enjoy your comments.
Thanks, beehivestate:-) I think it must have been some new people on the blog that aren't familiar with the way the blog works. I'm not going to let a negative rating get me down (though I have to say it was a bit of a shock LOL!). We have house to build and contests to win!!
I'm sure the shock is shared by many. Remember last years clues? They seemed more pointed to Utah for a time. Now I'm beginning to think that this years clues may point to next years Dream Home. LOL Maybe we still both have a chance yet.;)
Haha! Maybe you have hit upon Mary's strategy! That would be great! I already put a bug in Jack's ear. BTW, Jack, I have at my disposal an entire research institute and a friend with an entomology degree. Just sayin' LOL!!!
Hey girl,
<3
I thought you were probably right on track.
Would you still consider winning this home?
Mary really had us off in the wrong direction, completely wrong!!!!
It was a pleasure playing with you.
Likewise, Trish, it has been such a pleasure getting to know people from all over
As to your question-TOTALLY!!! I have had this one in my sights since I learned of the VA location!
This one my husband has been tracking every day along with me, and he is not a "watching paint dry on TV" kind of guy LOL!! We would move there in a heartbeat! He has been shopping for boats "just in case", haha!!
Well I was off. I never thought Utah.Wow….
Only 8 hours form where we now live………………perfectly dreamy!!!!!
That's awesome. Where do you live now, Spaceylacee?
Wyoming, can you believe it? My little hometown!
What a beautiful area — it looks a little like the western version of Stowe! It may not be tropical, but I'm sure Jack T. and crew will make it fantastic. I can't wait to see what they do!
CplusE–don't those hills in the video look like a reverse image of Mt. Mansfield? Spooky……..
My thoughts exactly CplusE! It reminded me of Stowe while watching the presentation. Stowe with a hint of country… gorgeous!
I have fished the Upper Provo River and can say that there is no place more beautiful on earth than the place Jack picked
Well if you fished it , we wanna learn how to do what you do, and perhaps do some canning as well. I've been talking about this for about a year. Bless you Jack for finding this paradise
Southern Utah is mighty pretty too>>>
Oh, my! We have to find BeehiveState, as she lives in Midway! She can be our blogging spy throughout the process!
It's 532 mi & 10 hrs from us in Pueblo. How far is it from you, Wyo_Girl?
209 miles. That's nothing. We drive 120 miles one way when we need to go to the "nearest" Costco! This is going to be fun.
We should plan to have a bloggers meeting when they do the tours.
That would be awesome!
Well it is 765 miles from my home and about 13 hours of driving. I am in CA in the East Bay. Sounds like a great motorcycle road trip to me.
I'd ride my Heritage Softail, but it's set up for solo riding. Also, the tour will probably be in late winter – not a good time for 2-wheeling through mountain passes.
Hi, Namuha–I am across the bay in Redwood City. I think Utah might be cool; don't know enough about it.
I'm in Pittsburg in Contra Costa–so you can see why I'd love to win somewhere else to live. Nice to see people from my general area.
Hi, Lindingo ! HGTV has been filming the new season of 'Curb Appeal the Block' in a lot of East Bay areas, and today's was in S.F., where the crew did a fantastic job on 3 Victorians in the Mission District.
Beehivestate has started posting – FYI.
WOW! I have no idea how the clues fit into this, and I still haven't watched "Giant." Midway is a little over 3 hours from my house, so this is very exciting. I know I'll do the tour this year! Nebraska, are you still in?
Probably not- Utah does not hold much mystery for me- beautiful spaces but not much allure to live there.
Give it a chance! You won't be disappointed!
Wow!!! Can you imagine living where Sundance take place!!! OMG!!! how cool is that!! Great choice of location HGTV!!!
What?!? No Virginia? I'm heartbroken but I know the DH will be fabulous as usual. Who hit the nail on the head?
A couple of us were close but I didn't read the comments far enough to see Utah. I had guessed out west thinking Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Cali. Someone else had guessed Nevada, so that was pretty on par. I think the whole "canyon" clue in scrabble lead us to the west. Along with that plant looking like an arid climate. The whole fly fishing threw us off though lol
HUH?
Thank you HGTV it is someplace new. But I am completely puzzled. Can you please explain the clues? One by one!
I know you are looking for 2013 now so please consider a real country (as in midwest farm style) location next time!
Nebraska, every season somone asks to have the clues revisited, but alas, that is where
mean Mary gets her name because, to my knowledge, she has never (NEVER) answered
those questions. She just makes things up and usually most of the clues are bogus. Think
of it as a game with none of it making any sense. If we discover the answer it is merely by
chance! We go a wild goose chase each and every time. Some people have more time on
there hands than others and they go a'hunting!! Good Luck and just let it go. =/
Stunned and confused are the words for me. The clues almost appear to deliberately lead us away from the area DH 2012 was located, not get us closer. I am really confused about all of this, now. Things that make me go hmmmm… =\
Me too- the first clues were leading us to Hawaii. I asked for an explaination of the clues!
Apparently expressing surprise is unwelcome by some reading this blog as well…
Debra maybe you gave them an idea for the 2013 or 2014 DH location. They always do a great job so I am super excited to watch the construction unfold and wait for the big reveal Jan 1!
One can always dream:) I will not give up on my Virginia dream home-NOT ever! Did you hear that Jack? I will not give up on VIRGINIA or Tara LOL!! I am here for the duration…!!
Debra two words – BLOG CABIN
I am all over it!!
No the clues were there..Canyon..Vail..and that plant looked out west.
As one of many who have been at this a while, the overwhelming number of clues connected to other places. Those three words gave very little indication. In fact there were over two dozen clues directly linking to the very specific locations elsewhere. That is why so many of us who have been following this from the beginning were so surprised. This was a complete deviation from how the blog clues process has worked in the past. The reaction was not a statement of opinions regarding the state of Utah, it was shock that the clues we were given lead in a completely different direction.(NOTE: The plant (a fig) was in a photograph taken in Australia. Vail is Colorado, and canyons exist in states throughout the western and eastern states so that one is ambiguous at best, hence the confusion.)
Ya the only thing that really threw me off was the fly fishing. I was so set on it being out west, and then the fly fishing threw me a curve ball. I thought out west because when I think of canyon I think of Grand Canyon. Anyway, Utah is nice, I mean it's definitely no tropical place, but it's better than Alaska or something lol
Yes, Cami had her version of a canyon, too; in Hawaii LOL!! We all have our vision of where things are and what they should look like.
Having been raised on one coast and now living on the other I find it funny how those who have remained in one place don't have context for other locations. Then, the research part of the clue process begins and so many are relearning things they had long forgotten in geography class, or discovering facts about places they didn't know existed.
It's fun to watch everyone share their new discoveries!
Ya it definitely was exciting to see everyone using the tips and saying it could be all different places. It would have been so nice if it were Hawaii, but they prob. won't since it's so expensive there:( Maybe they'll do Alaska one of these days though who knows. They did Florida a few times, they need to really give some other states a chance.
Provo is only 5 hours from the Grand Canyon, so it's not to far to go LOL
Nope not bad at all. I used to live 5 hours from my family and it was an OK drive, definitely done worse. When I was little my family and I used to drive to southern florida from new york! Talk about a road trip! lol
WOW worldtravelerr, that was a road trip, and to a kid it would seem longer. My one daughter when she was little, would say "are we there yet" before we pulled out of the drive way. And here in the west, the states are a lot bigger then in the EAst, with a whole lot of nothing inbetween.
Yeah–things that make me go, "Wow ! " I can't complain–family is in CA and it is not that far from Utah–and it seems to be out of reach of #**!!*^^###@!** tornadoes !!
I think someone does read all the blogs, and you have "lobbied" so thoroughly for several areas of VA, and Cami has led quite the campaign for Hawaii, something is bound to come through in future.
Haha! We can always hope, and ever the eternal optimst, I I will go with plan "B" which is-there is always next year! LOL!! Hey Jack, if you're reading this, contrary to what my darling husband says, I'm not getting any younger you know…!
Congratulations Summer!! You seem to have hit the nail on the head!!!
I searched through the answers in Clue One and Summer mentioned Utah as a state with many canyons. That is the only time I found it; although, I didn't look through all the replies.
psst What didn't summer mention?
That's what I was thinking, Nebraska. I went back and looked, too, and her post about the canyon in Utah which is actually more than one hundred miles from Midway, also mentions NINE other states in that one post. So, Mary played with us on that one. I was thinking "hit the nail on the head" would mean making a case for a location, such as people did with Bucks County or West Virginia or Tennessee. Oh, well, I guess next year we have to be more random, apparently!
Nine Mile Canyon, UT pfffft
Right, and I stand by my statement that her comment had 9 different states listed. She also listed MANY other locations and didn't really stick with one state, ever. Nine mile canyon is down near Price, more than 100 miles away. Not sure what you mean by pfffft — I saw Summer's original comment, and she did a great job of making expansive comments throughout the clue guessing. So, congrats to Summer, although I still don't agree with Mary's assessment of hitting the nail on the head. That's Mary, though, leading us on wild goose chases throughout the country. By the way, I am nearly certain that there are many wild geese in Midway!
I give summer credit for getting the state right, that is awesome! I think Mary said though that someone got the town right too?
Nail on the head to us meant state, city, etc.
pfft was just a dismissive noise that I would have made to think that that guess qualified as "hitting the nail on the head," because I thought it should be more specific. But actually beehivestate DID hit the nail on the head with Midway, UT — and Mean Mary DELETED it before telling us someone had gotten it. I didn't see that coming. AHHHH. All that hard work pouring through the comments for nothing! pffft
Lindigo, "PFFFT" is the name of a movie released in 1954 that starred Judy Holliday, Kim Novak & Jack Lemmon. —-Good thing Mary is done with all her clues, LOL.
OK, I get you now. We're on the same page. I saw all your research and your hard work, and I didn't even consider Utah as a mention with that canyon post, so I'll say "pfffft", too! That's VERY tricky of Mary to delete beehivestate's Midway post, and I kind of remember her saying it, since I follow her comments. I laughed when she said it because we have talked about Midway being close to where I live. So, that's the nail on the head. Now it all makes sense. Thank you so much for all of your research, Lindingo!
She also said the town of Midway under clue #5 but unfortuneately it was in CA.
LOL!
We now know the real right answer was deleted. No sense of fair play here. Does Jim Samples know?
Ok. So I never thought of Utah, lol. I guess I always campaign for somewhere closer to where I live, coz I have always lived in the south. But this looks great! Can't wait to explore. We have a lot of time to explore and get to know the area. lol Let's get this party started!
LOL….I'm a Southern gal too and was secretly hoping for GA, TN, etc….but I am very interested to see what they come up with….
Really? Well….I hate to say it, I'll still put in for it, but I wouldn't take the house for sure, I dislike Utah.
I gave you a thumbs up Zarin. I'm sorry that voicing your opinion caused a negative reaction
Having different views and opinions is what make this blog so GREAT!
Many of us understand and respect your opinion and have been giving thumbs up to you, but the thumbs still keep coming down:( I got the same welcome from my post, initially.
I think there are a lot of new people on the blog who do not know the decorum of the blog. At least I hope that is the case. PLease do not let that keep you from enjoying the blog and joining in on the fun side of things.
Hopefully those who were quick on the TDs will learn the ropes and things will be more friendly, soon. There are many on this blog and we are going to have differing opinions.
That is what the blog is all about:)
You ever lived in Utah? Or are you one of those type of people who say the dislike sushi even though they have never tried it?
When I moved to Utah 6 years ago I thought "Blah", but now I love it. If you visit here once or twice you really don't get the chance to appreciate it. Now I can't imagine living anywhere else. The people here are great and the recreation couldn't be better
I know there is a predetermined idea about life in Utah, but it's not all as bad as people make it out to be.
Wow! I think Utah is great. Hopefully the house plans will be a mountain ranch with easy access to get into the house, and universal design for all to use. Please HGTV think of everyone when you draw up the plans for this one. Open floor plans, large doorways and at least one accessible ( roll in ) shower for either the homeowner or guests. In this day and age it is so easy to just build in these features that can benefit anyone who might be lucky enough to win! A basement for storage, huge pantry and long eating bar would be terrific for all those people who might come visit! Thanks HGTV!!!!!
No basement allowed in this subdivision!
Is that because they are putting it in a FLOOD zone!!!! well look at the brighter side then you'll have an indoor swimming pool! LOL
No too many basements due to the type of stone called "pot rock" (not that kind of pot!) in the geothermal areas. I live in this area and it is NOT a flood zone.
I Love all your ideas Ladny, and I totally agree with you, definatly a basement, and I would also like 4 LARGE bedrooms, most of the rooms I find are so SMALL! and a king size bed in the master!!! AND a garden tub in the master bathroom!!!!
I think when beehivestate walked over to see the construction yesterday, she saw that the home is two stories, so I don't know how that will work with universal design. Hopefully the master is on the first floor.
I think it would be great, one of the Dream Homes did have a elevator. I thought that, that was a great idea!
Yes, an elevator would be a good amenity. We're all going to get older someday (if we're lucky).
So Mary wasn't kidding when she said the Scrabble boards were a WILD GOOSE CHASE! What style of house do you think it will be? "The architectural theme at River Meadows Ranch includes a mix of
refined Mountain, Farmhouse, Traditional Ranch Homes and houses with
similarity to Victorian contemporary style."
Victorian? If the "Giant" comment is to be believed….
I think probably western maybe cabin or lodge style
According to the news release, it is a modern western ranch house of nearly 4,000 sq.ft.
That is a big ranch!
AWESOME!!!
When I told my husband that this year's Dream Home is in Midway right next to the Provo River, he said, "I hope they have flood insurance!" Don't know the terrain of the home site, but that area of Utah had so much snow this year, and it's still not all melted. They had more than 600% of the average snowpack this year. It has been an interesting Spring!
Here in my city they have put out the call for volunteer sandbag fillers. All boats were banned from the Missouri River until further notice.
Whoa — stay dry, Nebraska!
Smart husband Wyo-Girl. The terrain at the ranch definitely looks like it's very likely to flood. I live two blocks from the Willamette River here and I am nervous this year too!
YIKES, Ed, I didn't realize you were that close to the river! I will keep my fingers crossed for you!
My husband is watching the weather service like crazy with the warm temps we finally have for the weekend. Clackamas County flooded twice already this year and Mt. Hood has a TON of snow. The Columbia is past flood stage and the Willamette up here is within 6 feet of flood stage. Ark building recommenced several weeks ago… :S
I looked at the area using Google Earth. The elevation is just under 5700 ft, and the river elev. is not much different. I wonder how Jack T. is planning for that?
I grew up in Utah Valley about 30 mins from Midway, and where this neighborhood is is where the Heber Valley slopes up towards the mountains, so flooding from the river shouldn't be too big of an issue, but a friend of mine used to live very close to the neighborhood, and I'd be sure to have a good snow blower in the winter…beautiful valley though. Still pretty quiet, and not too far from larger cities if you need something. I'd love it
Good to know. Robb11. It's a gorgeous area, isn't it?
Star Valley, there is a dam at the Jordanelle reservoir right above this area so flooding is not an issue. I've never known of this area flooding. We get lots of snow here in the winter, not for nothing they call it "the greatest snow on earth"
We already own a giant snowblower, so that's one less thing if we win, right? Glad to know the river won't come out of its banks.
Yep living in a snowy location sucks for sure(from experience) where I live in New York now does not get that much snow but the ice is terrible. And, I have lived up north where we were only a half hour from Canada. I wish the Dream home would be somewhere warm, two cold locations in a row is no fun. But, I must say, Utah is not nearly as cold as Vermont.
Wow! Utah! What a great location! I can't wait to check this area out!. Boy, Mary, you were not
kidding about the wild goose chase!!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Never would have guessed this would be the State from the clues, but I'm totally excited.
Here's one of the press releases:
http://www.virtualrealestatemall.com/hgtv-dream-h…
Thanks for the link!! Great info. I am starting to imagine it now….?5 covered decks?! Awesome!
I suspect they got the start date wrong. Otherwise our tradition start date has changed. Maybe HGTV has decided not to compete with New Year's hoopla?
"The most successful consumer promotion in cable TV history, the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway involves sponsorship from several national advertisers. The 2012 Giveaway will run from December 30, 2011 through February 18, 2012."
Thank you for the great link Wyo!
Hmmm..Your link contained an additional link to a River Meadows in Bend, Oregon-just a snafu, I suppose.
That's funny! Maybe they're going there next year, LOL!
For anyone who is interested, I found a copy of the Architectural Guidelines for River Meadows Ranch — all 91 pages of it! That's a lot to wade through (I feel sorry for Jack T. and his crew), but here is a list of styles NOT permitted:
• Colonial
• Georgian
• Neo-classical
• Coastal-Eastern Seaboard
• French Provincial
• Gothic and Neo-gothic
• English Tudor or mock Tudor styles
• Art Deco
• Traditional Swiss chalet
• Tyrolean styles and motifs
• Traditional ‘Swedish Cope’ Log Homes
• A-frame structures
• Geodesic dome structures
• Gambrel roofed residential structures
• Pre-fabricated ‘Modular’ structures
• Log Cabin type structures
• Massive type structures
There's a whole lot more, for anyone who wants all the excruciating details, but I'm afraid Debra will have to wait for another year to get her Tara! Here is the link:
http://www.rivermeadowsranch.com/downloads/rmr_ar…
Wow. That's a lot of "NOT"… These are some of the most desired architectural concepts. Clearly this development is targeted for a very specific audience.
I'm most surprised about the Log Cabin and Swedish Cope Log Homes not being allowed — it seems that a log home would fit right into that community. I saw that the covenants are also on the website. At least they are easier to find than Stowe's were, so when people repeatedly ask about covenants, there's an easy link.
I am surprised about many of these as well. Especially the log cabin ones- and apparently they haven't seen the modular homes from Irontown either. Not sure I would want to live where I would need a lawyer to take out the trash!
The term "control freak" comes to mind. I'm not sure the Stowe DH would have been permitted in this development.
Ditto Charlotte!!!!! ^_^
Control freak? Com'on. I don't think so.
What, no "Swedish Cope" Log Home", LOL–they certainly ruled out a lot of styles. Probably have lots of HOA restrictions……
They do. No RV's, campers, boats, etc visible in the driveway at no time. And the way I read their rules your kid can't even put a tent in the back yard to camp out overnight!
They always start with strict rules and they want unclutteredness during the selling phase. But this will be a small group of homeowners. You can find out how your neighbors feel about certain things, get on the Board, and make changes to what the group prefers.
We live in a planned community nearby and have similar HOA covenants. It keeps the neighborhood nice and we don't mind at all. I doubt if people will get their tail feathers in a knot if the kids sleep out in back a night or two. the stars are so bright here, the sky is so black, it is awesome. And this is a very family-friendly community. I wouldn't want a big RV parked in my neighbor's driveway. This is ranch country. You are more apt to see farm equipment.
Hi
I asked my hubby about the building restrictions and he said most of them are for safety reasons. The "Swiss chalet or Swedish Cope" has been done and is a resort in the area already (I forget the name but Beehivestate will know.) The log cabin styles are a more rustic look and you can find that style scattered throughout the more mountainous areas. As for the ginger-breading on homes it doesn't hold up, it looks beautiful for about 3 years and then because many of the people who own the homes are there only part-time, it starts looking kind of raggedy. Many of the other styles that are on the list the roofing or roofs themselves cause a hazard when the snow slips and falls off the roof, snow weighs a lot and icicles are scary when they come down. I hope this helps answer some of the questions
That was very helpful, sherrinut–and makes a lot of sense, rather than a set of arbitrary prohibitions.
makes sense!
When I asked my hubby he said, "Do you realize how often we get asked about the building restrictions?" I told him that I'm sure he gets asked a lot but this time it's for my blogging family "We want to know!" He kinda laughed and then explained. Then he said "This is the one I hope we win!" You see he drives through two huge canyons to get to work each day. On a side note he said they are allowed to use decorative wood and ornamentation on the exterior of the homes. The building codes prefer no dainty wood trims (I called it ginger-breading not him.) Again I hope this answers some ?'s
The last comment he made before retiring for the night was, "I hope the next one is tropical."
sherrinut, it is the Zermatt Resort that is in the Swiss chalet style. also, since Midway is a Swiss theme mountain village, there is alot of that style with the painted stucco, some of it is very well done.
And having this style in Midway is what makes it so cool to visit or just take a drive through. I love this place and wouldn't change the way they plan their community, but I think for the most part the neighbors are going to be easy going people who just want to get away from the city a bit, enjoy a beautiful place to live, and have some peace and quiet!
Especially since beehivestates said in a subsequent post they have a Swiss Days festival? If it is a cultural celebration in the area you would think that architectural element is popular and be a part of the community.
I read through these documents (see the attached link for the PDF documents). The CCRs are very "interesting". I'll leave it to readers to formulate their own opinions… http://www.rivermeadowsranch.com/facts.php
LOL, I heard its also in area that floods, so how about…………….a HOUSE BOAT,
LOL thats not on the list!!!!!!!
I probably started that rumor, unknowingly, and we have clarified that it doesn't flood. Jordanelle Reservoir holds back the big melting snows so only a little gets let out at a time on the Middle Provo. Then, there's a reservoir below that, Deer Creek (I think), that protects the Lower Provo from flooding as it goes through the canyon.
That is right, Wyoming, you said it much better than I did. We need those dams for flood control and to insure our water supply.
well jeez…couple of days offline because of tornado-caused power outage and I miss 2 clues AND the reveal!!! Has been crazy couple of days in Massachusetts (my son's school is closed for the rest of the year!) but we are all ok and this escape is a nice treat. I see how this goes now– really is a wild goose chase. Makes sense from a marketing perspective, and I am only an eager consumer!! Know VERY little about Utah but looking forward to learning more, as I did from everyone's clue research. Thanks for the diversion everyone!!
I'm SOOOO glad you and your family are safe!
Ditto!!
Thanks..:)
Glad you're OK. I had never heard of a tornado in Massachusetts before.
I remember one going through Worcester, when I was a youngster. It killed almost 100 people and just missed my great grand mother's house. They do have tornadoes there, just not very frequently.
Wow — I had no idea. I usually think about midwestern states when it comes to tornadoes. I guess I watched "The Wizard of Oz" too often as a kid!
It was strange. Last big one was 1979. You're not the only one who was surprised! Thank you for your concern.:)
Glad you are okay. We used to drive from East Hampton to Springfield on weekends to visit my Grandmother!
Easthampton MA? I went to HS there…Usually we only deal with bad winter weather! Thank you for the kind words.:)
Small world! My dad came home one day and said let's move to California. Two months later this thirteen year old was in a station wagon with a U-Haul trailer behind it heading for Redwood City CA. I finished 7th grade at Notre Dame du Bon Conseil, but all of the rest of my schooling was in CA. Maybe we are related or something?! After all Easthampton isn't that big! ^_^
NdeB Very glad to hear you are ok–seems surreal to have a tornado in your area. although as EdinOregon pointed out, they can be a rare but terrible occurrence. For those of you who blog on the DIY blog cabin site, I hope we hear from Worc911EMT sometime, and that he & family are ok too,
Haven't had much news on as we have been cleaning up, etc. but I don't think they had much trouble further east. I believe Worcester was spared so hopefully any bloggers are ok!:)
I'm glad you are OK as well. <3
Wow! I never guessed Utah…I was thinking Wyoming. I'm sure the house will be gorgeous as always!
Mary you certainly were a tease.. But I love the pleasant surprise, and I'm very happy Jack chose Utah. Wow, I can't believe it. I've been putting off a visit to Utah far too long. I think it's time now. Has Beehive State posted yet? I wish we could hear from Marie from Brookings, that's where she wanted it last year. Wow!! This is shocking. I was adrift in the big blue when I should have been looking for "The Promised Land" this whole time.
Well folks, "This is the Place" and isn't it gorgeous.
Beehive State is still AWOL, Cami, but I'm dying to hear what she says about this location!
I'm beginning to think Beehive State has an in.;) So let's hope we do get the inside scoop.
oh my god, star valley, I've been out all day and now this!!! As we speak I'm putting on my shoes to drive over there and look! This is only a mile down the road from us. I drive by there every day!! It's just off River Road. The Provo River is RIGHT THERE and today it is beyond gorgeous here.
Definitely, I will be giving daily reports, you will probably get sick of hearing from me.
beehivestate, I doubt anyone will tire of your valuable input !! Congratulations on being the Dream Home "Local" !
How funny! I feel like I already won something!
NO WAY BEEHIVESTATE!! Bring on the information!!
Oh, sure, you are out getting a life and we have been talking about you all day! Were your ears burning? Ha, I just realized that your email is going to be so full with all of the postings to you from this blog. So that life you were out getting just got a LOT busier!
Lets us meet at the Sundance Festival this year. I think at least ten of us could probably go.
The Sundance is in February in Park City. Sundance itself is just down the road from us, the other way, toward Provo. The Foundry Grill restaurant makes the best Angus burgers on the planet. More later, I'm too excited to think right now!
Hi beehive, I just got back from Gino's Italian Restaurant- fantastic in Merrillville Indiana- 25 miles from the UO, and just opened up your email. Oh my gosh, I feel your excitement. It's hard to find the words, we are all so wowed by this HGTV decision. The Foundry, in will certainly feed the most hungry of all of us, and I'll bet they have a mean veggie burger for LLColeman and I. As far as the dates, I think you are right a few years ago, it was in Feb. I think, but just checked three sources and all say Jan. 19th.
HI, Janzee–glad to hear you had a nice Italian dinner ! With the great seasoning ingredients in Italian food, it is hard to go wrong: vegan, raw or meaty style meals !
Hi Coles, I had a lovely Chilean Sea Bass, with an orange sauce- very light with a great salad with just olive oil- no bread and no dessert, although I loved looking at the terrific selection including a NY style cherry cheese cake ( not as good as mom's I bet) I haven't posted this on the main board, but the weather here has prevented me from going to Chicago for any touring. As you know, like every place else the weather has been soo unpredictable, and staying close to the area has been the best course. I was on the way to the organic vegge shop in Dyer, and the hugest system came rolling in. Turned on my hills, and headed back.
Sorry you had to "hunker down" ! I hope weather clears up, so you can tour a bit more . I called to leave you a message today. Let me know what time of day is a good time for phone calls ?
I might research trying to do a mock cheesecake with soaked, raw cashews blended with dates (and lemon juice for that tang).
Ah thanks Coles everything is copasetic. At first I thought you were my cousin Elley. Your voice cadence is very musical, very special!! I didn't get back from Chicago till late afternoon, and was delighted to hear from you. I work at night and sleep in sometimes till around 10:30 when I'm on a roll. I am on central time at the moment, and so around 1p.m is terrific, if you choose or anytime you like.
I have my recipe with me if you want to talk about this fabulisious cheesecake.
Hey, Ms. J–I did get the messages you left today– you got the right number. I was taking care of my high -maintenance grandkids today, LOL ! I had not realized you were up late at night and had hesitated to call, with you being on central time. I am staying at my crowded in-laws' house and do not want to wake up my husband by phoning after 8–(he gets up at 4 and has a very physical job !)
I will try calling you in the afternoon. Your energy sounds high and electric, LOL.
Yeah, it's January, I was just so excited last night and still am. You will love the menu at the Foundry Grill, Janzee. They don't have a veggie burger but the atmosphere is so beautiful. There are all kinds of mining-theme tools on the walls and a beautiful huge mural of running horses. And there is a big fireplace. We go there for special occasions and try to get the table by the fireplace. The other restaurant at Sundance is called the Tree Room. It is very high end but we took our son and fiancee for engagement dinner, a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
Your ground up experience and beautiful way of expressing is fantastic. Your "community eyes" for the neigborhood, personal stories are very generous and add a tremendous dimension to this year's blog, Ever since you mentioned the Foundry, I've been imagining all of us getting together to have dinner there, and actually started practicing what I would say to each of this cast of characters.
I liked this part: "Built by Rimrock Construction, the almost 4,000 square foot home with amazing mountain views will be an outdoor lover’s dream, featuring five covered decks, an outdoor living room and a laundry room replete with lockers for skis, waders and fishing rods. The house also features four bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, a dedicated game room and a gourmet chef’s kitchen perfect for entertaining. During the winter, homeowners and visitors alike will delight in skiing and snowboarding in the unparalleled Utah powder. During the rest of the year, water sports, golfing, hunting, mountain biking, hiking and fly fishing are readily available.
But not sure about the location yet!
Sorry, Nebraska! I was so excited, I posted this same info without reading first:$
Four and a half bathrooms? So, there's a powder room? LOL, I just wanted to be the first one to say that. I have a feeling that question might come up again…
And again, and again and again and again! ^_^
LOL and again and again……..
I am glad it has 4 bedrooms. Lets just hope one isn't a ski dorm or ski bath.
Amen, Nebraska !
Ya the location is a cold one, it doesn't warm up too much there sadly it seems when I looked up weather averages.
Hey, where's the powder room ?? What are the taxes gonna be?? Where is Utah ? Can I see it from my back porch? LOL
Salt Lake is a great City, I have yet to visit Park City, but have lived in SLC for 5 years now and it really is a great location! The things to see in Utah is amazing!!
I have a feeling this is going to be a "Giant" Dream Home. Can't wait to see the Dream Home plans. A pool seems less likely now, but I'm sure there'll be a community pool. Right Jack?
I think I just found my painting inspiration. Those golden yellow trees with the river are gorgeous, and the Wasatch Mountains are beautiful. Strange though… this is the land of milk and honey. Makes ya wonder about last years clues. Oh well, on to Dream Home number 16. Hawaii will have to wait at least one more year.
Well…you could always jump in the river. :S
Brrrrrr.. not without my waders. However maybe tubing isn't out of the question in the hot summer days.:)
Cami, Midway is famous for the plein air painting. Believe me, plenty of inspiration around here!
I'm into acrylics now and will work on water colors and oils over the summer. I'll be ready with my easel, stool and sun hat. Maybe I'll come visit in the Fall, and Winter. ^_^ . I better put my brothers on notice. LOL
I have a feeling my little guest room is going to get some use this year.
Cami, just get a wetsuit and you can dog paddle in the river, if the current is not too swift……agree about the beauty–the land of milky snow mountains and honey colored trees……
Designers, i have nothing against the hgtv green 2011, but when you make the girls room can you not use as much pink and be a little more generic? im an 11 year old girl and i have nothing against some of the color pink, but its a little overwhelming. i cant wait to see how it turns out!!!!
Good for you s_moore. Speak up and let them know what a young girl/woman would like in their room design. You are a voice for the young girls of your times.
aww you're right s_moore! You should let them know that not every girl likes pink or not every boy likes blue!!! The rooms might look cute, but not every family has a 5 year old girl/boy. Great input!
It's all personal tastes and opinion…both of my girls loved it…one older than you and one younger.

Sorry, Nebraska! I was so excited, I posted without reading…..You already posted this:)
So are you saying it's already built?
I'm thinking this is the game plan….the architects' plans xD
This is the best location yet. Honestly, the best air to ski location I've ever been to. Even from NYC, you can commute to Park City/Deer Valley Utah on a direct flight to Salt Lake City in the morning, and be on the slopes in the afternoon. It is a beautiful part of the country. WOW.
Just like the Winter Park home in 2007.
You can ski at Deer Valley, Park City, Sundance, The Canyons, or cross country at Soldier Hollow… right in my backyard!
In keeping with the Dream Home blog tradition, I think it's time to start begging to see the Dream Home plans. I noticed Jack had them in his hand nearly the whole time during the video, so they must be done.
Soooo WE WANNA SEE THE DREAM HOME PLANS!!!! ^_^
I want to see the house lol
I just checked the HGTVpro site, but nothing yet.
Now here's something you don't see every day — the town of Midway has ice castles in the winter, and they do tours:
http://www.utahicecastles.com/
They also do a Swiss Days festival in September, and there is a train ride that does comedy murder mystery excursions as well as other options! Check out the Related Links on the town of Midway's website:
http://midwaycityut.org/
Midway is starting to sound quite intriguing!
This year I am going to stay on top of all the wonderful resource suggestions and things to do in the areas that you research. There is such diversity in the land, weather and things to do places to see!!!!
Yes, we have the ice castles in winter. That is by the city park with the outdoor ice skating. And in summer, we have concerts under the stars in that park.
Oh my gosh!!! This sounds like a virtual wonderland. Have you ever gone through these castles beehivestate? Who builds the castles, and how long do they stay up during winter?
P.S. You will probably start to get a whole slew of emails throughout this process- some sisterly or mama advice- think about those things you choose to share and things you choose to watch unfold. There are so many places to explore, and get your feet wet with the area and beyond. Dont worry, you will be called on to do a myriad of things. As a good fisherman take your time, throw out the bait… watch with sparkling eyes, you know just where to cast your line.
That is wonderful advice, I thank you for thinking of me. No, I did not get to go into the Ice Castles last winter, although I drove by several times. They are in the city park. I think one individual pretty much builds it to start with and the mother nature does her thing, so it changes every day. They are there until they melt when the snow goes away in mud season.
beehivestate, You have impeccable judgement, a great knack with words, that makes us the reader feel we are neighbors , and a wealth of info being right close by.The stories have just begin, and where you want to take this will be like painting a picture, or writing a novel. Enjoy, and dont climb over any fences!!!- that's something I would do.
thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the links!!! OMG! How beautiful! I could feel the chill in the air at the ice castles…love it!
BEAUTIFUL! BETTER THAN I THOUGHT! PRAISE GOD!
The quick poll on the main Dream Home page is still up, and Hawaii gained another 2 percentage points over night. B) I guess there's no harm in letting Jack know where "it's time to build a dream home next" is there… I mean now that Jack has told us the location of 2012– it's time to start voting for 2013.
LOL, the state of hawaii owes you a free trip or something for all of the great research
I realized this year there's still a lot I don't know. I probably know more about Utah.
LOL I always welcome a free trip.
Isn't that the truth LOL!!
I already started with my plea for something in the midwest. Its about time!
Hawaii dream home
a paradise for Cami
hope your dream comes true
My friend from Denver is a scuba instructor, and she goes to Midway every year for certification classes. The Homestead Crater is an amazing place for scuba. Here's a link:
http://www.homesteadresort.com/Crater
Wow, maybe I can have a little Tropical with my Utah. Now we just need an indoor resort with a wave pool and we'll have the whole package deal.. I guess there's still a lot I need to learn about Utah. I better do a quick study.^_^
I am so excited that I'm literally sitting here at my computer shaking!
Don't let your husband see — he'll tell you to calm down again!
Yeah, I could not sleep all night. I was so happy I forgot to eat yesterday once I saw the news.
Wow, I would have never guessed Utah with the clues. Of course, I still think the 2011 clues point to Tennessee. o.0
Imagine That!!! Utah!!
Lucy's wagging her tail in delight and I think I'll take out my Cabela's fly fishing rod and start practicing. It's funny because my wife just bought our 4 year old a new casting reel. Suppose she knew something? o.0 LOL Doubt it but it would be a grand area to live in. Peace and quite and the tranquility of the river. Loving it!!
I will admit I felt somewhat down (Understatement) when I heard the location. Then, I did some research on the area…GORGEOUS! Then I found the link about the plans for the actual dream home (Look at mine and Nebraska's posts above)….and now I'M EXCITED and CAN'T WAIT to see the home!
Everybloggie, please remember it is okay if we share different opinions and feelings. Please stop clicking thumbs down because someone thinks differently than you. I read earlier Debra G was getting thumbs down for sharing her disappointment at first too, and she is one of the most positive bloggers here! There was another blogger that had a -1 for sharing her feelings…Not downing anyone, just sharing disappointment. Really…come on! I DO expect more from our blogging family than that….Just sayin':S
areeve04 you are so kind! Thank you! My Kleenex thanks you, too:)
Agreed. This is all for fun, not for anyone to get hurt feelings. Let's just spread the good vibes!
;D
Now Jack, about VIRGINIA… I can help you with 2013. Really, ask me anything. I mean ANYTHING about Virginia.
Skiing? Check. Snow boarding? Double check. Sailing, horseback riding, fishing (fresh AND salt water), mountain biking, hiking, hunting, falconry, hot air ballooning, you name it and it can be done in Virginia.
History? This is location of the inception of the USA! George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, the writing of the US Constitution, the list is literally endless! And of interest to legions across the country!
We know you are already looking for a home for 2013. Come on Jack. Virginia is calling… <3<3<3
I just love you Debra. I think it's great to be on your team, because once you have a focus, you go girl. And I will have to say I was in total support of Cami's Hawaii. Let's all meet at the Sundance Festival this year, and cheer on HGTV, and be the most all out voice there.
Haha! Like a laser with my VA focus LOL!! BTW-when is Sundance? Didn't that just happen? Or, was that Cannes…? I can't keep up!
Laser tag right? I think the Sundance is sometime in middle of January. Usually right after the National Association of Executive Television Producers meets in Vegas, the group heads right over to Sundance. This year the festival has so many new offerings from new writers, and producers it would be sooo fantastic to jusst be around that community of movie and documentary makers.
Oh, I like that! Tag, “you're it, Virginia!” LOL!! As for a Sundance trip, it all depends on the dates. I have two commitments on the books, already. One to emcee the Portland Bridal Show the weekend of the 14th, and my granddaughter's birthday weekend is taken up. Do you think Reford would work around my schedule…?? B)
It looks the Sundance Film Festival is Jan. 19th-29th. I'm in– as long as they have the Dream Home tour ready to go by then.
It could be a blast. The 2011 tour was Jan. 7 – March 20, so they might do this during Sundance. HGTV would be smart to jump on the opportunity — Sundance brings in huge crowds!
Are you game Wyo_Girl? It would be awesome seeing some people from the blog as we ralley in support of HGTV. Imagine experiencing the fesitval, and doiing a tour as a blog.
I'm definitely game, Janzee. This will be fun to plan!
Unbewonderbelievable!! I was just telling beehivestate that it would be interesting to see if a group of us went to the festival if we could get entry tickets for free. I love trying to find free things for folks.
I have a really good travel agent, that is cheaper than anyone I've worked with. Closer to the fall if we research and are interested then, maybe we can get excellent lodging.
I wonder if we can get HGTV and River Meadows Ranch to give us a special Blogger's Day to tour and party (quiet meet and greet of course;))
Excellent idea Wyo_Girl. Maybe HGTV offers us a educational tour- under the auspices of education the rates are usually much cheaper.
Are you kidding me, I can't believe it. I cant get this smile off my face. I even tried slapping my face to stop. This group would have sooo much fun meeting up at that time. You gotta tell Debra, and anyone you know from your neck of the woods and the gathering would be awesome.
Uh oh, that is Maddie's birthday weekend. I am going to be up here for that (She will be four-a FABULOUS age!). I'll be counting on you ladies to take pictures and post your personal brushes with greatness LOL!!B)
My grand niece is named Maddie. She's 5 and we are baby sitting her tonight and taking her to her ballet class tomorrow.
Well, Debra, one of us Virginia lovers will just have to win the Blog Cabin. Good luck!
And if I happen to win the dream home in Utah next year, that would also be a dream come true. I've always loved ranch style living and will be close to family in Arizona.
Ours is a Madeline. Is yours a Madsion or Madeline? Isn't fun have a granddaughter?!
As I told Lessie, BC is still operative! Things are coming along nicely there, too, if you haven't been over there recently! New pictures on a new blog post, today:)I'm working Jack for next year for DH in VA. I will not forego my beloved Commonwealth!! GOOOO VIRGINIA!!!!
Our's is Madeline too. She was born on 2/15 and her older brother on 2/14. Becasuse his birthday party was interrupted when Mom had to get to hospital he was allowed to choose a name for her and came up with Madeline Grace. Her other brother was born 1/23 so they're all little Aquarians!
Oh my gosh! Our Madeline's middle name is a G name, too (but a family surname)! What a great big brother to select his baby sister's name:D So many little fishes in the family, haha!
You're kidding! This is so funny. We just turned our Maddie back over to mom and dad. She had a big day!
AZSonny, I have to chime in here, too. The birth dates are amazing similarities to my family's–I have both grandkids who are Aquarians too. My grandson was born first, on Jan. 21 ( he is 6 now), and his little sis was born the next year on Feb. 17 !! No Maddies in our family, but my grandson will probably tell you that his sister can be MADDE-ning, LOL !
I think it is remarkable for a little boy to come up with such beautiful names for M.G !
Ha! Now that you've mentioned the Madde-ning part, maybe my grand nephew was a little psychic when he picked Maddie. She holds own with "The Brothers" as she calls them.
Too funny,AZSonny ! Did you take care of your grand nephews, too –or just Maddie ?
My granddaughter is mellowing out as she gets older, but as a toddler, she crawled over to her brother (who is a head taller and outweighs her by a lot), yanked the pacifier out of his mouth, slapped his little cheek, and popped the pacifier into her own mouth before she crawled away ! She used to head-butt him, too. …….Sweet little boy, he never retalliated.
I checked out the dates and that's cricket, you are correct. Wyo is thinking that maybe the public tours will have started.
I hope it's ok Janzee I made a plea to Mary to invite Jack and the whole Dream Team. B)
Funny, I wasn't even close to considering Utah as a possibility. You had us fooled Mary!!
Thanks for posting Mary and making me sane again!!
PS- Jack can I come fishing with you since you know all the good spots by now????
One more comment before I return to my house duties. I really believe this place is going to blow the doors off the Vermont home. It has everything Stowe offered and more xD The people are great in that area and there so much to do. If you guys loved Stowe, I have a feeling this will top last year's Dream Home. I really can't wait to see it!!!!!!!!!!!!! If Mary asks next year what's the first thing you'll do if you win the 2012 Dream Home? I'll answer, go fishing w/ Jack. Yesssss! as I make a fist and curl my arm backwards like Tiger Woods does after a big shot!!
Hi luyourdog gang, Janzee here, I was just telling Cami that maybe the bunch of us could meet at Sundance this year depending on where you live, and offer a toast to this year's home. I am sensing a tremendous excitement on the blog about this location, and I think we're gonna have alot of pleasure watching it being built.
That would be fantastic Janzee. Unfortunately we live in Maine which is a long ways away from Utah. It could get quite expensive for us to travel all that way. I'm afraid we'll either have to win the home to join you guys (lol) or communicate through the blogs to share in the joy you all will experience. We really WISH we could be there to cherish all Utah has to offer and meet the blog family. Hope it happens for most of you!!
Hi dear lucyourdog-what a fantastic comment, about meeting up in Utah. This group will enjoy the virtual celebration of being together whereever we are and whenever we get together no matter what time or place. About Utah– here's a little challenge– you remember the old adage " where there is a will there is a way".
WOW Utah! Found a link about the HGTV 2012 Dream Home with a description of what the home will be like. A huge home with 4 bdroom and 4 1/2 bathrooms almost 4000 sq ft adn outdoor living room and laundry room with lockers for the skis, etc., also a game room and gourmet chef kitchen. Amazing! Also read all the HOA rules. OUCH! Still, amazing and a blessing for however gets this one. Good Luck and can't wait for this one to start even though the other isn't quite done yet.
do you have the link to share?
It sounds like the press release that many were sharing on the first day. Let me track it down and get it back here.
Yep, the info sjkomi posted looks like a match to this press release from HGTV:
http://www.virtualrealestatemall.com/hgtv-dream-h…
Where did you find the HOA rules? I looked for them on Wyo_Girl's link but didn't find them. Too many rules and regs is a dealbreaker for me so I'm all concerned!
Okay I have to say this house plan speaks to me of elegance, sophistication, and huge gatherings. Yet it also says home to me. A place to wind down after a long day and just relax with your loved ones. Check out this house plan. http://www.thehousedesigners.com/plan/astoria-323…
Hi Namuha, I feel like passing out bubble gum cigars or something. Welcome to the site, this sounds like a beautiful keeper, and one that inspires a love of family, nature, the timeless nature of the river.
Organic carrot sticks and broccoli please. Those sound like great treats to me. I quit smoking in '99 and bubble gum is just to sweet. Although I will go for a fantastic piece of Tiramisu with coffee ice cream. I know it's not healthy but if I am going to splurge I figure I will do it right.
OMG how did you find this house plan? It is so BEAUTIFUL! I have had to show it to my hubby and my mom and even they were speechless. The house takes a persons breath away! Thank you for sharing this with us <3
Thank you sherrinut. I was doing a general search on Victorian ranch/farmhouse house plans. I was looking for a style that I thought would look great in a location near water and yet still blend in depending on the colors you choose. I was wanting it to be over the top in regards entertaining. I have a huge family on my mothers side. My grandparents had 16 children. A few sets were twins. I know my mother has 8 siblings still alive. I have a ton of cousins too.
But in regards to family I also wanted a place that felt cosy enough to feel like a true home and not just another house. With areas inside to do family type functions when the weather is bad. With a body of water out side like a river it makes for great out door activities. I could really see an infinity pool out the back door over looking that river Jack found. Add a gazebo near the river maybe with a dock and we are talking fun times.
Wow, you guys brought tears to my eyes. During Jack's travelogue, I could actually feel the cold knee deep crystal clear water of the river that runs through it, maybe it's because I don't have fishing boots. Congratualations on the awesome, and I mean awesome location!!!! There was an incredible amout of back packing, meandering down country roads, navigating all hills and dales to find this location. Jack, you pulled it off baby, and we are sooo proud of you. This is gonna be the best year yet– I feel it.
Oh by the way, hi Robert Redford, and Sundance Festival. Was that you with the cowboy hat casting your line? Howdy folks of the ranch you certainly have the best neighbors possible with HGTV, and we here at the more than OK corral will be right there with you guys researching, questions and being the best blog ever.
I can't believe Jack actually went fishing– and in the water too. I guess that was a pic of him in the clues. LOL.. Just not in Hawaii like I over-imagined it to be.
Better duck, Cami! I think I see Jack coming around the corner-haha!!:o
Janzee, that just may be the perfect name for the 2012 DH blog : "The More than OK Corral Blog".
Hi toostey, what a great idea. That has a nice ring to it "The More than OK Corral Blog". I can almost see a little posted corral type fence around the property or maybe as fencing in the back of the property.
I can not believe how wonderful this location is
I clicked on the "River Meadows Ranch" web site and have been blown away.
Jack, as usual, great pick!
