Speaking of Green Details

Lucin Cutoff causeway, under construction, circa 1910. © 2001 Utah State Historical Society.

The excitement generated by the HGTV Green Home winner announcement spurred me to jot down a quick post about the green features of next year’s HGTV Dream Home.

Although design details are still up in the air, the architect did mention in a recent call his hope and desire that locally sourced products including sandstone and reclaimed lumber be used in the home’s construction. Could salt-cured beams and planks from the Great Salt Lake trestle bridge form part of the home’s timber framing? What a story we would have to tell!

Stay tuned as we share more construction details in the weeks to come.

  1. Happy Fourth of July to everyone at HGTV and to the fans! Have a GREAT day! :)

  2. Happy 4th of July everyone. Y'all enjoy the fireworks tonight. If you are able to have them, lol. We can't have them this year as it has been so dry. I wouldn't be able to see them anyway because as usual I have to work the evening shift lol. Y'all have fun and be safe.

    • We are so wet here it is scary. I sent Debra G a link of photos about the flooding here.

Hopefully no one will tempt fate and decide they want fireworks. Stay safe!

  3. This summer has been busier than anticipated, but I have been faithfully following the blog for the 2012 Dream Home. Thank you for all the postings on the progress!

The architectural design, and architect Corey Solum’s intent to create the look of an old, original farmhouse with off-shoots that appear to be built over time, exudes timeless appeal and charm. I love the idea of a central stone-faced structure with off-shoots clad in different materials, along with the possible green use of recycled sandstone and timber. And, I like the floor plans, particularly the functionality of all the rooms, the privacy afforded, and the accessibility. Great job HGTV on incorporating a ground-floor bedroom with its own en suite bathroom!

  4. In a previous blog, I believe a fellow blogger mentioned that there may be a Dance Bear Café in Midway, Utah. If so, I don’t know if designer Linda Woodrum has given any thought to using a canvas transfer or print of William Holbrook Beard’s famous painting; I believe it’s titled Dancing Bears. It remains one of my favorites. It’s a wonderfully whimsical painting featuring a close-up of two bears dancing in the forest.

This holiday weekend, I am enjoying the new links on the HGTV main site. Thanks for the link to dreamy kitchen islands, particularly the black-and-white modern classic kitchen, and the link to baths, particularly the modern finish of hammered-nickel on a traditional classic free-standing tub (I believe from Waterworks) as well as some of the classic design features by DeCesare Design Group. Thanks HGTV for the continued inspiration!

    • Hi, it's on Main Street in Midway and it's called "Bear Dance" Cafe. Great bison burgers, wonderful desserts, yumm!

I'm going to look for that painting you mentioned. I hope Linda uses art from local Midway and Park City artists. There's so much to choose from.

  5. I'd like to give a SHOUT OUT!! to the Wasatch Plein Air Paradise 2011. This morning on the way to the Fit Stop, I saw at least a dozen or more artists set up working for the "paint out" competition for the best painting that can be done in four hours this morning. The paintings will be on display by 1 this afternoon, along with "WET PAINT DON'T TOUCH" signs and I'll walk over there and see. Here's more about that:

"The signature event of the Midway Art Association for artists and art lovers is the 6th Annual Wasatch Plein Air Paradise 2011. This event will offer four painting competitions plus a two-day art exhibit and sale.

"Participating artists will compete, network, exhibit and sell their work, making this event the largest Plein Air competition in the state.

"More than 120 artists from Utah and neighborhing states will compete for over $7,000 in purchase awards and cash prizes. Amateurs and professionals are welcome."

      • Are you talking about Timpanogos cave? I wished I'd seen that. I've not been there, yet, but will this summer. It is on the other side of the Alpine Loop Highway, closer to Lehi than Midway but still not that far away. I think we had a post about it in the last month, could be wrong. It's a very popular tourist attraction. Maybe I can find us a link.

        • No I don't think its Timpanogos Cave. It was this underground natural hot spring swimming pool- the only one that scuba divers can use without a wetsuit to be certified in North America. I sent my brother an email about it and he has been there! HE LOVED IT> I'm not a diver- but I love Hot Springs type places. I would love to do the Scuba Experience.

AND photoS 12 and 13 are also The Crater

The Travel Channel Show was – Extreme:Extreme Pools – I can't find when they are going to air it again- BUT if I find it I will let you know or if you find it please let me/us know!

    • Your setting is a perfect area for a Plein Air show, with so many inspirational vistas.

LLColeman on July 5, 2011 at 1:02 am
  6. WHAT IS PLEIN AIR? (just case you don't already know)…

Plein air or outdoor painting dates from the 19th century, when Englishman John Constable and the French Barbizon painters rejected traditional artistic formulas and sought to depict everyday subjects in natural settings. These Realists inspired the Impressionists, who believed objects in nature were not form, but rather light that could be conveyed by color. Lead by Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Edouard Degas, Auguste Renoir, among others, the Impressionists took their paint tubes and easels outdoors, where they recreated the world as colors, which suggested light. At first, their outdoor sketches were used to produce larger, more finished works in the studio. Eventually, they began completing their works outdoors. Although at first rebuffed for what appeared to be unfinished paintings, the Impressionist vision soon became a standard for truthfully conveying the outdoor experience.

Artists in the United States were attracted to the concept, and many, like Californian Guy Rose, traveled to France to study with the French Impressionists. Suddenly, locations with remarkable light were of particular interest to painters including both the East and West Coasts and the American Southwest where painting colonies formed.

Today, there are more than 500 registered plein air artists in the United States working "en plein air" to capture the light and colors particular to the location.

alicesoneysmom on July 5, 2011 at 10:46 pm
        • I don't sew–but if I did, I'd be a quilter for sure (crazy quilts that is—it is beyond me to do all the measuring and calculations of the geometric dazzlers.) Martha Stewart's show had a piece about a collection of red & white quilts that a woman had collected by the hundreds, and they were hung, in spirals, from a high ceiling for a free exhibit in New York City. It was an amazing effect.
The book sounds great–I love both art forms. I do felting with wool roving, so I am always interested in sheep farms (raised for their wool, not meat.) ;)

      • Hi LLColeman Soney was having a rough time yesterday so I tried everything I could do to calm him down. Music seemed to help a bit, but he just didn't understand why there was so much loud noise. Oh well Soney is back to his silly little self today. Do you do mosaics too? I just love love did I say love to do mosaics. I have had many different teachers and they all do things in different ways. One teacher taught us how to do stepping stones. I forgot I had them in the basement and when Rebuilding Seattle was there they found them and now they are in the front yard. I like to work with small pieces of glass and it takes me a long time to finish a project. But it is very good exercise for my hands. I have made bird baths and lots of flower pots and for decoration covering found golf balls with sparkling glittery glass. You take care LLColeman and will talk to you soon.

alicesoneysmom on July 5, 2011 at 9:40 pm
        • I am not able to do much mosaic work where I am living now, but I see lots of things that I would love to cover with mosaics all the time. HGTV used to air the most wonderful craft shows & shows about crafters–I miss those shows. I saw a couple of shows about people who covered most of the walls and floors in their homes in fantastic mosaics–I understood them perfectly, LOL. I'd probably never stop once I got started. I think doing mosaics on golf balls takes a lot of dexterity & patience.
I'm glad to hear the Rebuilding team helped find the stepping stones. You must be enjoying your home.

      • Sorry all the puppies and kitties had such a rough Fourth (or should I have said "ruff" :D Ours did okay…only because there were no fireworks due to the ban from too much heat and too dry. I'm such an early-to-bedder that I am usually very aggravated that the noise continues up until at least 11pm in most places I've lived. But this year, due to the ban, and in my true human form, I found myself missing seeing at least some fireworks…oh, well, humans seem to be almost never satisfied. And yet, here we are, waiting, watching, and following all the tidbits that are dropped for us by HGTV, one beautiful home after another.

    • Thank you, Alice and Soney! I love Fallingwater — it is my favorite example of residential architecture. I got to visit with my girl scout troop when I was young and it changed the way I looked at houses forever! Until that point houses to me were just buildings that you lived in, but after seeing Fallingwater I realized that a house could also be work of art. Fallingwater is an architectural masterpiece in a breathtaking setting, and it complements that setting beautifully. Functionally it may not be perfect, but visually it is just stunning!

CplusE on July 5, 2011 at 7:54 am
      • Thank you C&E you expressed my feelings about Fallingwater perfectly! Have never seen it in person, but when I saw a television show on the PBS channel about the home, it inspired me to design a dream home. I have spent many hours drawing out floor plans just for the fun of it. Of course Soney and I have our own little DH now, but we are planning all kinds of designs for the yard and someday do the basement. It is fun to dream. That is why I like it here, so many dreamers having fun. Soney says hi to Diamond! He had a hard time yesterday with all the fireworks but he is back to normal, or shall I say back to his silly little self.

  12. I'm becoming more and mokre interested in the Provo river. Some of the photos show a wild landscape touched with river grasses and small trees at the edge of blue-grey moving water. I want to learn fly fishing and stand in my waders in the cool waters. How do you get a break and sit down or can you fish sitting down?

absolutejn on July 4, 2011 at 9:37 pm
    • Well, you could always get that radiator chair that Ladny and I "re-purposed" from the Green Home and put it in the shallow water and just cast off from there. I can just see you! Don't do that until later in the summer, though, the water is so deep right now I fear you'd be up to your neck and it would be oh so hard to cast!

beehivestate on July 5, 2011 at 12:23 am
    • You can definitely fish sitting down. My cousin was visiting Wyoming this week and we fished the Snake River. She was sitting on a rock and had her pole lying across her legs while she was texting someone, and she felt a tug — then caught a beautiful cutthroat trout, hands-free. Wouldn't advise texting while fishing, though, and I'm glad the pole didn't go into the very fast water!

  17. I loved living in Utah!!! I looked over the dreamhome plans & it has good designs elements that I do like in this dreamhome. Modest changes for me personally, as registered in this state so very easy to do. Love this location best of any thus far. The elements, close proximity, & surrounding elements are awesome. I would have to add several guest rooms in a separate entity with a lockable large studio overhead. The guest suite would be swapped with master suite immediately, while enlarged to incoporate more usefulness in my own likes and needs. Master suite coordinated with back deck along with private deck space, adding a morning bar, huge closet, large linen space, craft space, views incorporated, along with taking on all the bathroom extroardinaires with asian themes. I could hold on to this one for the rest of my days then. :) <3

  23. Hope they place the dining room windows high enough to allow for an elegant bench seating to be applied around this grand rectangular space with probably awesome inspiring views. At the same time, it allows for use for only what's really needed for viewing and not lost with $$ to better exposure. I personally would build in corner cabinetry that sits in corners with lovely pediments that rise only topside exposed. The seating flows in front of corners making the universal C shape in this retangular space. The concave part of the C is where the corner cabinets are placed with only top sides used and benches are able to house all the many various linens & holiday attributes available in a well used hospitable home. Plus, it could incorporate a very nice platform underneath that allows for dynamic use of space. It's all imaginable, now to put good thoughts to work…yeah :)

Also, change the swing door on dream home plan for entry into dining space from deck to the opposite side than as rendered. Removing common conflict with doors posing interruptions and loss of flow with swing and where placed with entering homes. I'm imagining a most luxurious seating arrangement, with all the textures, grand elements & amentities with finely crafted details. Love the table being allowed to move to give convenience with cleaning, incorporating the aged or disabled if necessary. The shape of the table can be many, plus the raised shelved freely moving lazy susan in the center. We all have our dreams, this is one of mine. Hope the fridge is placed with easy access to table area along with usefulness of course with kitchen. Floor to ceiling cabinetry to have elegant pediments or wall in glass cases with special lighting. Ensuring all the many many appliances and gear to house a great kitchen ensemble is done well. A great pantry is a must too and for housing additional sets of dishes. :)

  25. Drove by the house today. Irishsprite, the covered decks are 1) off the mudroom between garage and living room and 2) on the south side of living room/game room. I thought it was French doors off the living room to that deck but not sure now, it looks like a swing-out door on the floor plans. I will have to go back and look. Roofing packets are up top ready but not opened yet and no workers were around.

Up before 6 a.m. to help make brazelli for Swiss Days so I'm wearing down about now. Brazelli has eggs, flour, real butter, heavy cream, brown sugar, white sugar, vanilla, and lemon flavorings, cinnamon, salt. Tomorrow we bake them in the special "irons", today we just made the dough to be refrigerated overnight. We make it in massive batches. A very fun morning with some nice ladies.

I'm leaving on vacation on Thursday morning so I need to get down to the house and check everything out carefully so I can report before we leave. Will do for sure for sure. Have a great rest-of-the-week everybody. Hope Mary has new construction pictures up by the time I come back.

    • I guess the workers got an extra day off for the first July holiday in Utah. Have fun on your vacation — is this when you are going to Coors Field? I haven't been majorly thrilled with our Rocks lately, so I hope you can bring back some spark when you cheer them on!

      • Moab, Telluride, Denver, Steamboat Springs. Love Telluride and have vacationed there the last two summers. I was told that when the town first started the ski business, they were "giving away" lots for $10 just to get property on their tax roles. That was way back in the day, of course. And a lift ticket was $7. You couldn't drive to the lift, they pulled you in a Jeep because there was no road to the lift.

I have high hopes for the Rockies, I'll be at the game on Friday night the 15th. Sitting on the 1st base side.

        • What a fun trip! Coincidentally, we went to Moab and Telluride, then Santa Fe, San Luis Valley in Colorado to visit Mom, and then Denver in June 2010, so I know exactly your route for the first few days. We drove through Heber and by Strawberry Reservoir to Moab, which is probably the way you are going. Then from Moab to Telluride, you'll most likely be driving the same way we went, too. Beautiful country! We stopped in Telluride to visit our friend who was starting his first day as the town manager, so we got the inside scoop on Telluride on where Oprah and Tom Cruise live, LOL! Have a great trip, and I'm counting on a Rockies win on the 15th!

          • This will be our third straight summer to Telluride. Last year we hit the Bluegrass Festival and I said "never again" during that week! I've never seen so much pot smoking or so many old "hippies" in my life and it's not a pretty sight! Two ice cream cones in Telluride? $18 no lie! By the way, the drive from Midway to Moab is 2 hrs. 50 min.

    • Thanks for the report on the covered porches! So we have 1 in the front, 1 in the back and the 2 you mentioned – where's the 5th one? Did I miss something?

Have a great time on your vacation! We'll keep an eye on our house while you're gone through the construction pics. Enjoy all that ice cream! But I hope you find some cheaper than $18…LOL!!!

Talk to you when you get back…

  26. I have a request on the Dream Home….. please put plug-in outlets close to the so Christmas lights can be hung up the bannister of the staircases for the holidays and above the fireplaces close to the mantles for that same reason. Would you also put electricity outlets in the yard where Christmas lights can be outside? That is the only favors or requests that I have. REALLY, anything would be great. I will leave it up to you.

    Thank you! :)

BrendainKs on July 5, 2011 at 6:45 pm
    • Like that idea. Some people out here hire a company that comes and decorates their houses with Christmas lights. Probably pretty expensive but otherwise seems like a good idea not to have to store all that stuff.

beehivestate on July 5, 2011 at 7:26 pm
      • I would love if someone did that for me! :) Less stress that way. That's one thing I could do WITHOUT!!!

  27. Nice to see Mary has updated the construction pictures. The last one is now dated July 4th! The lady is still pink, but her roof is black now!

EdinOregon on July 5, 2011 at 7:56 pm
    • Thanks for the "heads up" on the photos. Notice the deck on the back corner off the living room? I see also they have graded the dirt around the foundation. Interesting they still don't show us the garage side of the house. There is another covered porch there outside the mud room entrance.

  28. This sounds really interesting. Would you be posting pictures as construction continues or will you be keeping it more of a surprise?

KristalBraley on July 5, 2011 at 9:27 pm
  29. Awww fun ha ha. I will have to share it. Thanks MGul!

KristalBraley on July 5, 2011 at 9:28 pm
  30. Will the house be built with kids in mind? For example the outlets that can't open up unless a plug that fits and goes in straight opens it up so kids can't stick things in there and get electrocuted. Obviously there are tons of other things but I just wonder if the house is being built with family in mind.

  33. Is it just me, or do you really bond with all these houses even though you've never seen them in person? We follow them for so long in these blogs and literally get attached to them, and really hope and dream it's your home!

I really enjoyed the art work.

  38. Okay Mary I love the front and back views. This home is so dimensional how about side views? We already know there is an extra porch not on the rendering. We would like to see it.

Did anyone esls have trouble loading the photos? I had to go through the entire set instead of being able to click on a thumbnail and having it load from the mid point.

  39. Can anyone venture a guess on what the property taxes will be annually on this home?

Nebraska on July 6, 2011 at 11:42 am
    • Property taxes tend to be low compared to, say, Stowe. My property taxes are 1/3 for comparable when I was in WA state. They haven't told us what the value of the house will be yet and we have to take into consideration that the property sits on 2.45 acres and has river frontage. I was thinking of trying to find out what the other house down the street pays in taxes but Utah is a nondisclosure state so that might not be possible. You might try Zillow.com for comparable properties, they always tell the tax rate.

beehivestate on July 6, 2011 at 12:34 pm
      • I found out that the taxes on the home in TX were about 50K per year!

Nebraska on July 9, 2011 at 1:33 pm
  40. Nebraska, I see you were talking about the Homestead Crater. That is about 2 miles from my house and 4-5 miles only from our Dream House. Wyoming Girl has a friend who teaches scuba there. I've not been swimming at the crater but it's very popular and you need a reservation. The crater is what we call a "hot pot," and there are several in Midway, including Memorial Hill… which is no longer geothermal active.

  41. hello i am fdteam and this is my first blog. And i am excited to be part of all of this. i am very excited about this house. the location is awsome. i love the style and everything there is to love about it. by any chance does anyone know the address for this home?

fdteam on July 6, 2011 at 6:05 pm
    • The address is: 2370 River Meadows Parkway, Midway UT

Nebraska on July 9, 2011 at 2:57 pm
  42. How in the world are they going to incorporate that?…. Only time will tell, can't wait to see.

  43. I work in Real Estate Development/Construction providing affordable housing to low income families in the Washington DC area and am really glad that the concept of recycled construction materials is catching on nationally. I previously worked in a concrete reclamation plant and was proud that all of that concrete could be used elsewhere…landfills just don't need that kind of stuff. We are nearing completion of a Silver LEED certifiable shelter for the homeless, which is our first LEED certified project.

For this home, I would love to see them used as crossbeams in the ceiling of the great room or build an overhang on the patio…they are definitely beautiful and would compliment the house with a very rustic feel.

  44. So delightful to hear this colloquial story Downonthe farm. It gives us the feeling that someone we are part of the neighborhood. It's about folks long histories, long stories, and the memorable quotes that go along with it.

  46. Oh wow, so are some of the Great Salt Lake treasle bridge found in the materials of the home. If so, what a great piece of history included. Was this bridge for rail?
