HGTV Dream Home: A Patchwork Quilt

I’ve been working on content for HGTVPro.com’s Building of HGTV Dream Home 2012 package, now slated to launch in mid September, and I’m loving this quote shared by our builder Bo Holland during one of our recent conversations. I think it so perfectly describes the process of building this spectacular ranch-style home.

“There’s a phrase we often use in construction when something seems a bit challenging or difficult, and we call it ‘cut up’. This home is ‘cut up’. It has a whole bunch of shapes that seem to collide together, angles and geometric challenges that occur. It’s a little bit like a patchwork quilt. You’ve got all these pieces that you are trying to fit together and you aren’t quite sure how it’s going to come out until the end. It’s a very warm, inviting sort of home.”

Today’s collection of photos showcase crib framing, which I touched on earlier, as well as the home’s trussing and unique roofing systems. I’ll be sharing more information in September. Keep checking in for details.

  1. Hi everybody,

Having mastered my camera, flickr, and posting to the blog, now I have failed utterly in figuring out how to set my new digital watch. I think my brain is full. Tomorrow there is a space on my dance card for the Dream House and more picture taking.

beehivestate on September 5, 2011 at 10:32 pm
    • I'm sorry you're having problems with your digital watch, but look what you've accomplished this weekend. You've not only mastered the use of your camera and zoom lens, but you learned how to post your pictures on the web for the rest of us to see. I think your brain deserves a technological break…lol!

Keep that dance card open for Quilt Ranch photos tomorrow! I can't wait to see what you post!!!

irishsprite on September 6, 2011 at 12:31 am
    • Looking forward to new pictures. Curent ones are quite nice.

The centering on the front door and the overhead balcony seemed off in the picture, which struck me as an odd architectural choice. Don't know if it was an optical illusion based on where you took the photo, though. Would hope they're centered off each other.

stephenwnagy on September 6, 2011 at 10:00 am
      • Stephen, I think they are centered and what you are seeing is perspective. I was standing all the way back at the street and trying to get the photo without capturing the dumpster in the frame. Will look this morning, though. I'm also looking to get us pictures of the north side of the house so you can see the garage door.

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 10:39 am
        • Bee, Mary should be happy that you are conscientious about showing the DH in its most flattering light, minus dumpsters, etc. I bet "breathless" never could have imagined the intrigue she was in for during her visit to Utah ….lol

LLColeman on September 7, 2011 at 1:14 am
          • And she even volunteered to "set" my new digital watch for me but I said no, I need to figure it out myself! and I did… the next day. Which goes to show, if something is hard, you can do it but sometimes it is a good thing to wait until the next morning!

  2. hey folks, greetings from Alaska. I was on a spying trip with beehive, it involved slinking by fly fisherman, climbing over a rail, walking across a bridge and foraging through chest high grass all in plain sight of "big bad leroy brown" who since the security truck was vacant we knew was lurking somewhere in the house. Not being used to such thin hot air, my concern seeing all the back open spaces, patios and decks with no apparent awnings planned was whoever wins this place better invest in some big nice hammocks and umbrellas. The closeness of the meandering breathtaking river right over the fence and thru the grass is amazing. I could envision star lit nights, candles glowing, with many good friends sharing a grilled late supper after a day of skiing or fly fishing. The look to me is a blend of rustic lodge, homesteader history and back home on the ranch. I will do my best to keep beehive out of jail long distance. I did wave at "BBLB" but he slithered out of sight which for him is hard to do. It was most refreshing soaking my hot feet in the Provo and splashing fresh cold mountain water on my sweaty brow, spying is plain hard work, I was tempted to you know drink the water but beehive said remember all the cows, oh yeah. so I sipped the tepid liquid from my crackly water bottle instead. Beehive will have to find another gutsy partner now that I am heading out of here.

breathles on September 5, 2011 at 11:05 pm
    • Welcome to the blog, breathles, it sounds like you and bee had quite a time spying on our house. We really do need to do something about BBLB – he's spoiling all the spying fun…lol!

I have to tell you that the idea of hammocks on the back decks with lots of big umbrellas to provide shade for an afternoon nap makes me sigh with pure pleasure. ahhhhhhhh…

irishsprite on September 6, 2011 at 12:28 am
    • Have a safe trip back to Alaska!

irishsprite on September 6, 2011 at 12:32 am
    • You are as eloquent as your Midway friend, and you are welcome to comment on this blog any time! Here's my question for you or for Beehive — don't you think it's odd that Leroy is allowed inside the house? Maybe he was hiding because he was caught lurking through the home, when he's really supposed to be out in his truck!

      Wyo_Girl on September 6, 2011 at 10:33 am
      • Oh for crying out loud, Star Valley, i never thought of that… of course you are right. LRB had to hide because he shouldn't a been in a there! I missed my chance to do whatever I wanted. Nevertheless, I was just down there this morning and will be posting some great pictures for us.

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 1:11 pm
        • When I talked to the Guard in Stapleton, Colorado (last Green Home), he did tell me
that he couldn't go inside since he wasn't allowed to! He didn't know what it looked
like and so I told him. He had seen the dog bath and car when the garage door was
open. Can you see the garage and inside?

SandyLA on September 6, 2011 at 2:15 pm
          • Hi SandyLA, I should have the pictures up pretty soon. You can't see too much inside but if I take pictures in early morning light I bet we'll be able to view a bit of the interior. ttyl

          • Sandy, the pictures are up!

    • I miss you, breathless, have fun in VT and have some Ben & Jerry's for me! Hope you get to the Shelburne Museum to see the quilts and be sure to go inside the little schoolhouse and tell me what is written on the blackboard! You're the best guest I've ever had at my little cottage. It was so much fun hopping the fence and taking pictures with you. Please send us your pictures of the DH when you get home and figure out your camera. xoxo

    • Safe trip to you, breathles ! Thank you for "sharing" your friend Bee with us bloggers as she did more scouting of the Dream Home construction. For going along spying in the thin mountain air, heat and scratchy dry grasses, you win the Blogger Virtual Award for Uncommon Bravado & Zaniness !
You will be fun to read anytime you wish to return to this site; you can probably see that many of us have fallen in love with your friend, and she has a big fan base here !

  3. We were starved for information and thus the many posts. Oh happy day! Now I'm interested in the landscaping, for privacy and color around the dreamhome. I'd like some outdoor nooks filled with flowers…Let's see what happens next.

absolutejn on September 6, 2011 at 1:21 am
    • Hi absolutejn, The front area on the outside of the driveway is all graded and cleared for landscaping. The steps to the front porch are done and there is stone work in that area that matches the house. It should be shaping up any day now, as this is the season to plant grass if they are going to do that in front. I'll check again in a few days and see if anything different is happening. I noticed the Bobcat is still on the property and that's what they use to grade the land. By the way, I tried to get a picture of the round-about in front of the house but the sun wasn't right. It's landscaped with low junipers and aspen trees. Will get down there earlier in the morning next time and get photos.

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 7:47 pm
      • And with 2.45 acres around the house, privacy is not so much of an issue. I like it "open" as is.

beehivestate on September 7, 2011 at 9:26 am
      • I'll let you know asap. I don't think they will do a round-about in the driveway because there's one already in the street right outside there.

  4. The DH is beautiful…I've been living with my in-laws for almost 2 months now, can not put in words how bad I want to win this house!!! heehee I'm glad you finally posted something new Mary, thank you. We(my husband and I) have been working almost non-stop for about a month straight, so I enjoyed sitting down and catching up with blogs. I always leave the computer with a big SMILE:D

rebornqueen on September 6, 2011 at 9:30 am
    • Why are you living with your in-laws?

      ksmort9 on September 6, 2011 at 7:21 pm
      • If you win the home, they'll want to move in with you!

        ksmort9 on September 7, 2011 at 5:16 am
      • They are in their 80's and needed the help. It's not all bad…if we won(which I'm not banking on that) I imagine every relative I have would want to move in!! :) but, it is enjoyable dreaming!! and…I love to read all the blogs, I most love the clues, even though I'm never even close.hee hee :D I'm on my second atlas…ha

rebornqueen on September 7, 2011 at 12:29 pm
        • Me too, I love the dreaming but never can figure out the clues either.

          • This one time I hit the nail on the head but it was really more wishing and hoping than sleuthing.

    • Nice to see you on here, Reborn queen ! I sympathize; I have had to live at my in-laws' for 8 years !!
There was an old Calgon Bubble Bath commercial, " Take me away, Calgon !" Nowadays it's "take me away, HGTV & DIY !!"

LLColeman on September 7, 2011 at 1:27 am
      • You can have that master suite for yourself and hopefully they'll have a big old-fashioned bathtub and a good supply of Calgon.

beehivestate on September 7, 2011 at 11:13 am
      • Oh yes!! That is a comment I can relate to. They keep the central air set on 82 degrees…we are in the upstairs of an older Cape Cod… so, the old commercial, that said, "Take a Nestea plunage", and they fall into a pool? I can relate to that one too! But if they kept it turnrd down to where we would actually feel the a/c they would probably freeze… <SPAN class=idc-smiley><SPAN style="BACKGROUND-POSITION: -12px 0pt"><SPAN>:D</SPAN></SPAN></SPAN> I agree HGTV& DIY TAKE ME AWAY!!!!

We have not had someone live so close to the__home before, so this is lots of fun, knowing things before they are posted by HGTV.____Welcome to our blog! We are fun people and enjoy ourselves!!

  6. DAILY BUZZ ON MY 66TH BIRTHDAY, SEPT. 6TH (and that's too many 6's, so I'm planning on having a "wicked good" year and celebrate every day).

My husband surprised me by volunteering to take my friend "breathles" to the airport so I could sleep in. When I got up (at 6, of course) he had stopped by my favorite coffee place (The Coffee Station in Heber City) and got me a coffee card so after I went and took more pictures of "our" house, I stopped for my cuppa French Roast.

Wait till you see all the pictures I got for us today! I've got them from the camera and on to the computer, now to label them and upload on Flickr. I have some great views of the back porch with the zoom!! I think I took 40 pictures, so I'm outdoing even the construction camera. Might have to post them in batches. Well, I better get to it and do that before our son brings Lars over for me to watch while he and my DH go fishing.

Oh, Stephen, the front door is NOT centered under the Juliet balcony, it's just the way the architect worked the design and it looks fine. I wouldn't have even noticed if you didn't ask. I think there's another photo that shows it better.

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 1:16 pm
    • Happy Birthday, bee! Your DH is a sweetheart for taking your friend to the airport and letting you sleep in, even if you still ended up getting up at the crack of dawn. Did you wake up thinking about all the new pictures you were going to take today? I'm so excited about seeing them – I can't wait!! Right now though I have to go check out the alignment of the front door and the Juliet balcony. I never noticed they weren't centered on each other.

irishsprite on September 6, 2011 at 2:04 pm
      • Irish, thank you for the b'day wishes. So far so good. I've got the new pictures on the computer, uploaded to Flickr, labeled, made into a set, and now I will figure out how to post them to the blog. Stay tuned. Lars is on his way over here now so I may be sidetracked for a few hours but I'll get them up today. I think you'll be pleased!

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 2:55 pm
        • I'll keep checking back periodically to see if they're posted yet – although I will have to battle my son to get to use the computer. Oh the woes of a one computer family…lol!!

As for me, I have a birthday dinner party to go to this evening as well. Not my own, but a longtime friend. And with my very favorite cuisine being served, Thai.

Now really, I'm going to get on to all of those photos you've posted!

      • I really appreciate the birthday wishes, alice and soney, you are so great to find us all these wonderful songs. It's what makes the blog special for me, people like you. This is the best blog! And HGTV runs the best contest give-aways!! Yes, my friend “breathles” is so much fun. I met her through teaching quilting in Seattle at a retreat in Renton about 11 years ago and we've been fast friends ever since. Breathless is always game for an adventure, be it climbing a fence, making a quilt, or being a friend.

I go to bed at night all excited because I learned something new, how to post to the blog. Today I learned an even better way that will be way faster next time. By the time I do this a few more trys, I'll be a pro!

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 4:12 pm
    • Fantastic job on the pictures! I'm only half-way through them but had to make some comments and observations.

In general, I just love how you can see through the house, especially from the front porch. Can you imagine how beautiful it's going to be when you're inside?

I noticed in the picture you took through the kitchen and dining room windows that it appears there may be stonework on the island. Do you see that too?

I also noticed there is a window, in addition to the door, in the downstairs back bedroom. I thought I saw one in your earlier pictures but I wasn't sure.

The more I see the studio wing, the more I love the crib framing. It looks sooooo good!!

The stonework on the fireplace is beautiful! I think that's going to be one of my favorite areas when it's finished. I noticed the wolf box you pointed out – I assume that's for the kitchen – yay! In the new rendering for the kitchen and dining room it looked like there was a 6-burner stove with a grill. I am so ready to start cooking in that kitchen.

      Okay, back to the pictures…

irishsprite on September 6, 2011 at 4:30 pm
    • Now I'm really looking forward to seeing the inside/finished product. I especially like the way the stone work from the fireplace continues from the fireplace throughout the house walls on the porch and its posts. Very nice touch. Lots of doors and lots of porch space for sitting outside.

      Great job, great photos.

stephenwnagy on September 6, 2011 at 5:01 pm
      • I'm always surprised the photos come out at all, beginners luck I think.

    • Wow! I can only imagine how exciting it has been for you to see this beaUTiful home daily! I will definitely be bookmarking this link so I can enjoy these photos repeatedly. I love that stonework, and I'm also in love with the endless possibilities of outside seating to enjoy those gorgeous views. I didn't know there was a hookup for a TV until I saw the photo — you probably mentioned it, but I somehow missed it. How exciting — to be able to watch the Rockies game and watch the view at the same time!

      Wyo_Girl on September 6, 2011 at 6:13 pm
      • Yes, next summer the Rockies will be much better and we can sit outside and enjoy the game.

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 6:39 pm
        • Hopefully there's some way to protect a TV from the outside elements. Seems quite odd to me to put a TV outside.

stephenwnagy on September 7, 2011 at 9:54 am
          • It's well under the porch, not exposed to snow and I'm sure they will have an idea to shield it from cold in winter.

beehivestate on September 7, 2011 at 10:28 am
          • I'm thinking it would be nice to have some outdoor curtains! That way if the weather kicks up you can still enjoy the outdoors.

            imdar2 on September 7, 2011 at 6:20 pm
          • How about some cozy quilts for those cool summer evenings on the porch? I planned on going down to get more pictures this afternoon and see what's new this week but now it is raining to beat the band. Maybe tomorrow. I have no desire to slog through wet grass.

beehivestate on September 10, 2011 at 5:20 pm
          • I would love cozy quilts! My DH and I drove by the house Sunday. It looked like perhaps a pumper and his wife were there along with a couple of security guards. I saw the carriage style garage doors and that the balcony handrails were painted. I can't wait to see what kind of landscaping they put in. Right now it looks soooo industrial!

            imdar2 on September 12, 2011 at 5:43 pm
          • Hi imdar2, did you get into the back to see the decks? I'm curious how you know the bbq is installed? I'm surprised you think it looks industrial but maybe that's just because of the landscaping not done yet. I was by there today and no landscaping yet.

beehivestate on September 12, 2011 at 6:07 pm
          • Hey There! I saw the BBQ hood on the rock ledge that was built on the edge of the deck just under the overhang. I didn't get out of my car. I think the outside lights and the painted wood siding make it look industrial. The rock and the accent paint make it look warmer and cozy!

            imdar2 on September 13, 2011 at 12:44 am
          • That must be new since my last foray. Jayintexas thought that's where they would put it, although it blocks the view a bit. I was thinking maybe you were referring to the metal roof as being “industrial.” If you've been through Park City, you'll see outside lights in that style. I think it's in the period of the mining era. Glad you made it up here. Next time I'll meet you at Scrappy's for an ice cream cone. It's only $1.05!

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 6:58 pm
    • I've given myself plenty of time to peruse all the amazing photos you posted, beehivestate, and I must express overwhelming appreciation for such great detailed shots of the Dream Home, while at the same time harboring a real concern — you're doing such a good job of bringing us superb construction photos that HGTV may hire you away on their camera crew for future projects — and we'd lose your "shoot from hip" insights, to be replaced by HGTV corporate mandated views and posting times. After all, the sneak peeks can be such fun!

DBCoop on September 6, 2011 at 8:04 pm
      • I'm always amazed and a little surprised the pictures turn out so well. I take no credit, it's the camera! I can hardly see what I'm shooting because of the overhead glare at that time of morning (9:30). If I can get up early some day and photograph at an early hour, I'm sure we'd be able to see right into the windows even better.

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 8:06 pm
        • Don't let HGTV hire you — you couldn't enter the Sweepstakes!!

          Wyo_Girl on September 7, 2011 at 10:00 am
          • That's what I said before! I'd have to give up too much.

    • Thank you for the pics. They are great. And Happy Birthday!

      • Appreciate it. Thanks for the wishes!

    • Happy Birthday Bee! The pictures are much appreciated. I particularly enjoyed your picture of the rear fence showing just how deep the building is on the site. The closer to the river the better. I'm still not enamored with the light blue, even after the dark trim. I sure would like an explanation of the color choice from HGTV. The notch in the low wall around the deck near the great room looks just wide enough for the stainless steel BBQ top seen on the back porch. If they do put it there I hope it doesn't block the view from the GR. The landscaping should be interesting. With a natural, ever-changing canvas in all directions you wouldn't want to obscure it to any large degree. Again, thanks and keep-em coming.

Jayintexas on September 6, 2011 at 9:36 pm
      • Good thinking about placement of that bbq. It will be fun to see and I agree, don't block our view!

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 9:48 pm
      • Jay, on second look, I don't think the bbq will go on that notch. It doesn't look right to me. I doubt they will put in trees, the open prairie feels so natural and right for this house. I love how the grasses look this time of year and soon we will have the trees along the river turning all gold. It's about 60 yards to the river from the split rail fence, not far at all. You can easily hear the sound of the water from the house, which I love.

beehivestate on September 7, 2011 at 12:01 am
        • Love all those photos–isn't it cool how "professional" the flickr slideshow looks ?
Thank you for all your care & diligence in photographing so many details and angles..loving the zoom. Nikons are such good cameras, aren't they ? Glad you did not have to wear a bear costume to shoot the photos, LOL.( Maybe it would be good protection in the event of hail, though. )

LLColeman on September 7, 2011 at 2:13 am
          • Right you are! I never thought of that. It would be hard to climb the fence with all that fur, though. Some day I'll have a good story for Lars.

beehivestate on September 7, 2011 at 9:13 am
          • I'd give careful thought to the bear costume, beehivestate. If you happen to run into the real one that's been seen in the area, THAT bear just might think you're some real competition for a few tasty Provo River fish, in which case you'd likely come out of any encounter the worse for wear-ing all that fake fur!

DBCoop on September 7, 2011 at 1:13 pm
          • yeah and really I'm not big enough to be a very intimidating bear.

          • Or she might get mistaken for a fetching She-Bear, lol ! That could result in a bear hug that would not be too welcome….

          • lol

beehivestate on September 8, 2011 at 8:48 am
        • My other thought was that they would put the BBQ on the low wall between the columns, which would give the low wall 'meaning', however they usually put it aways from the building so as to not catch it on fire…See Blog Cabin BBQ placement. There is one picture that shows the hood at the center of the low wall (slide 41 of 43). Catch and grill, sounds good to me.

Jayintexas on September 7, 2011 at 2:00 pm
          • I will keep a look out for this bbq situation and post a picture as soon as I think it's in place.

    • Once again you've gone above and beyond for us, beehivestate! Thank you so much, we truly appreciate what you do for the blog. I'm loving the stonework on this house, and can't wait to see more of the landscaping. Belated happy birthday, glad to hear Lars suffered no lingering effects from his bee sting, congratulations to your son on his impressive trout, safe travels home to breathless, and my husband has the same problem losing glasses as yours — somewhere in the Puerto Rican rainforest is a pair of glasses belonging to my dear husband! ^_^

CplusE on September 7, 2011 at 4:30 pm
      • Well at least he lost them in an exotic place. We're heading out for Sears Optical in Provo right now to order new.

beehivestate on September 7, 2011 at 6:47 pm
        • Fortunately for my hapless hubby, the Plaza Las Americas shopping mall in San Juan had a Lenscrafters store — we spent almost all of the next day there, but they did manage to make him a new pair of glasses while we waited. Since he was in Puerto Rico working on a field project, he really needed those glasses — Lenscrafters saved his research study!

CplusE on September 8, 2011 at 7:52 am
          • That would make a good commercial for them! I always travel with my last (extra) pair of glasses, just in case. You never know.

        • With all the artist in the area I can't wait to see what ends up in the house! I know it's modern but I hope there will be somewhat of a Swiss/country feel to the house, too!

          imdar2 on September 8, 2011 at 10:13 pm
          • So do I. That would fit right with the area, as we are surrounded by mountains and Midway is a mountain village.

beehivestate on September 8, 2011 at 10:25 pm
          • Imdar2, wouldn't it be great if they use some of Robert Duncan's pictures?

SweetLiz on September 8, 2011 at 4:38 pm
      • I liked the Stowe house a lot, Liz, but the proximity to the river and it's Midway location makes this one #1 on my list… of course!

  8. One reason I like the Blog Cabin is because I imagine my husband and sons happily fishing in the backyard. Here we have this Dream Home simmering on the back burner with fishing right in the backyard too.
Fishing in the backyard goes way beyond the "American Dream"B) It goes way beyond my giveaway Dream Home expectations;). Add the beauty and spaciousness of the homes and I'm speechless:x (shutting up now)B)

Cami on September 6, 2011 at 4:39 pm
    • Our son caught a rainbow as long as his forearm today, he was so excited and told my DH that they would have to go fishing again real soon. It was a good day on the river because it was cooler and rained this afternoon and we even had a brief hail storm. Keep dreaming!

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 7:41 pm
  9. Oh you guys! Speaking of the "buzz" and backyard fishing, my DH and DS were just down fishing. DS got a rainbow as long as his forearm and DH got skunked. We (Lars and grammy) were outside talking to them and my little sweet baby boy stepped on a bee in his bare feet!! I felt so bad for him, he never had an injury before like that and it would happen on my "watch," even if his daddy was right there. Man! I got the stinger out and iced it and he calmed down after crying a few minutes. I told my DS to take him right home and to watch for swelling. I feel so bad, so bad I could cry.

DS said not to worry, gramma, and Lars seemed okay and we put neosporin on a bandaid and sent them home.

      • Thanks, it has been a very eventful and fun day. My dear friend "breathless" went home this morning and is already missed but we had so much fun the last three days. My DH made a delicious birthday dinner for all of us last night and today I polished off the leftovers. He even baked homemade bread in his new dutch oven pot. I was very impressed. My DS made chocolate cupcakes/brownnies with special icing so I'm probably still on a sugar high!

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 8:08 pm
    • It's not easy to see it happen to ones you love, beehivestate, but as they say, in every young life, a bee must sting. Or, I've also heard it as "in every life a little rain must fall." Either way, it hurts a bit!

You provided prompt first aid and lots of love in equal amounts, and the whole affair will quickly be forgotten. Although oddly enough, I remember my very first bee sting as a child. Funny how some little things stay locked in the our memories over time.

On the plus side, your son got a nice rainbow, you had some good family time (before the bee sting at least) and your husband, although he got skunked, probably enjoyed his family fishing venture out on the Provo all the same.

Now, on to those Dream Home photos that you captured for us all….

DBCoop on September 6, 2011 at 7:50 pm
      • Thanks, Coop. I forgot to tell you that my DH lost his prescription glasses while out fishing. This is the second time he's lost glasses while out in nature. I did not criticize him because I knew he felt badly. The last pair he lost while hiking Mt. Rainier in WA State and now this pair lost on the Provo river. AT least he's having fun while he's flinging his glasses hither and yon!

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 8:04 pm
        • Oh no! Aside from the aggravation and cost, I doubt the glasses would have served as a very good lure. Could be why your husband came out empty-handed. On the other hand, if he manages to catch a trout wearing prescription lenses, he'll be able to eat his fish and see it too.

DBCoop on September 6, 2011 at 8:09 pm
          • I'm sure he feels bad enough that he'll pay for the new glasses out of “his” money! (just kidding).

    • Ouch! that must of smarted, ooops! The next time the bee bites, watch for a reaction. I had a bad one, have a Epi pen now!
The pics were great. I hope you got one of that trout, love to fish. I can't believe how fast this home went up.The weather seems perfect.
Were in for some heavy rains and flooding in our area. The garden was a total bust except for the herbs and flowers.:'( and grass, will need a goat if it does stop soon!:)

MaryPA on September 6, 2011 at 10:41 pm
      • Thanks Mary. I told my daughter-in-law to watch for next time. These fishermen never seem to get pictures of their fish… hmmm. Yes, the house is changing fast, every day something new. We had rain today in the afternoon, and hail.

beehivestate on September 6, 2011 at 11:58 pm
        • Poor beehive–ironically, one of Lars' first run- ins with nature involved a bee… I empathize with you. I was babysitting one day and was strapping in my then- 6 mo. old grandson into his stroller; he moved his little leg upward just as the seat belt clasp was snapping shut. The clasp pinched his little leg terribly, and I cried right along with him… I basically did the same thing you did, putting a cloth with ice on the ouchie and comforting him. The guilt lasted a couple of years, though.. he must have forgotten the whole thing within days…(.I am one of those' hovering' parent/caretakers & expect perfection from myself).
I once treated a child's mild bee sting reaction with Benadryl ; MaryPa is right, for stronger reaction an Epi pen is good to have on hand.

LLColeman on September 7, 2011 at 2:06 am
          • Yeah, our daughter-in-law is a kindergarten teacher so she probably has an epi pen. Maybe I should get one for just in case. I thought of Benadryl but how do you give that to a baby? He wouldn't even hold still enough for us to put ice on the little foot. Oh well, his mommy says he's fine and not to worry.

    • Come on down!

beehivestate on September 8, 2011 at 6:00 pm
  16. It seems like the entire Dream Home's exterior will eventually be unified by the color blue and gray, the rock accents, and the the "crib framing" which I understand to be wooden strip siding?? There's lines (wooden strips and overall structural line) going up and down, diagonally, and horizontally nearly around the whole exterior of the house. So using what I've learned in my design course, I see that all these patterns, colors, lines and textures, will eventually be united into an attractive cohesive design. For instance, the blue game room addition connects in color to the blue roof on the other side–the rock accents may be seen on each side– and line is line no matter which direction it goes; so it's all good. The texture of the home will likely be repeated on every side of it's multifaceted visual personality. Although this home was originally designed with the idea of making it look like additions were added over the years, it will eventually all come together beautifully connected by similar design elements repeated throughout the entire exterior.

Is that about right? In other words no side of this home will stick out like a sore thumb, and will shine with subtle multiple personalities.

Cami on September 8, 2011 at 4:27 am
    • That's the way I see it, too. It's in harmony, in spite of the diverse elements. To me, it works and is not "cookie cutter" and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished project.

  18. Oh for crying out loud, you're not going to believe this, I was just sitting out on my front porch reading while Lars in napping and a bee stung me on the arm! This is taking the "beehive" state thing too far!

beehivestate on September 8, 2011 at 2:32 pm
    • So sorry beehivestate. Honey is a hot commodity around there, so I'm sure there's a few more honeybee farms than in most areas. It seems like this time of year the flies and bees start acting a little erratic and aggressive. The poor bee was probably just going insane and didn't know what she was doing. :S If it's any consolation she probably received the death penalty. Ohhhh that's sad.

Cami on September 8, 2011 at 2:49 pm

Bees like to chase me but so far have not been stung. Soney likes to chase after the bees but he has been lucky so far and has not been stung either. Be careful and make sure you and Lars don't have an allergic reaction, I think someone else mentioned that also. • Oh no, beehivestate — not another bee sting! You know, I'm thinking it may have something to do with your sign-in name. Do you think bees are sensitive to humans taking on apian attributes? How about Provoriverstate, or something that doesn't sting or bite.

Seriously, take good care of yourself. Not only do we all need you happy, healthy, and posting the Daily, er, um, Buzz, but your loved ones don't want to see you hurt, even a bee sting is unwelcome.

So approach the wasp nest with great care.

          • Some bees also nest in the dirt, and can be under porches…it is worth investigating…. it does sound as if a nest could be nearby. Sorry to hear you were stung.

LLColeman on September 9, 2011 at 3:46 am
          • Oh yeah. Once we had a bees nest get in our wall (when we lived in Tacoma) through the dirt at the foundation. We set one of those “bombs” and came home from vacation to find our laundry room full of dead bees by the hundreds. What a mess.

            Either that or some chocolate…….

LLColeman on September 10, 2011 at 2:28 am
          • We don't hide our chocolate, we eat it! We always have Lindt 85% dark chocolate bars, two squares each, every day… I hope HGTV stocks up our pantry in the Dream Home with at least a dozen bars. That would last us about a month.

          • We had bees make a nest in our wall. I didn't even know it. My husband heard this buzzing sound in our bedroom. I started investigating and found where the sound was coming from. Our wall had wallpaper and apparently that was the only thing keeping them from being in our home! Scary!!! I could feel a hole about the size of a soft ball. I didn't even know they could eat or dig through sheet rock!

            imdar2 on September 9, 2011 at 6:21 pm

            imdar2 on September 9, 2011 at 7:57 pm

          • If those are honeybees, ironically now they are an endangered species because of widespread 'Colony Collapse'. In many parts of the country there is now a service that will come out, and sort of "vacuum" out the bees into a container and take them somewhere that people keep hives.

  21. Someone mentioned trees by our house…..I don't think so. I agree with beehivestate….it will take away the openness and the beauty of the house.

I was thinking about this today as I was walking to my class. I like the openness!!! So no trees!!! :)

BrendainKs on September 8, 2011 at 8:43 pm
    • BrendainKs, if they did any trees, it would most likely be aspens but I don't think they will. It really looks great just like it is now with the open fields and grasses. Mother Nature has turned everything to gold and soon the willow trees will also be gold. I look forward to sending you pictures of it all one of these days. It has been cooler in the mornings now and the days are quite pleasant. It's good weather for sitting on the porch in the rockers.

    • I love the link ! Monica Peterson wore a lovely blue shawl (and our dear Janzee got to win one like it from HGTV) during the New Mexico Dream Home giveaway. Listed under the collection of Pendelton's shawls in the "Native American " section is one called "Moab Dance Shawl"… that would be kind of cool to have that incorporated into this current contest somehow…

LLColeman on September 10, 2011 at 2:33 am
      • Gorgeous shawl, I hadn't really noticed it before. I have a weakness for things like that! I also love the Lakota Goatsuede pillow and the Arapahoe Trail blanket. I'd need to put my quilts away for awhile before I start investing in Pendleton blankets, though. By the way, that red shawl would look great on Monica Pederson!

      • Hi LLColeman that shawl is so beautiful. Have to tell you something cute. On our walk today at the Seattle Center, a little girl walking in front of me had a shawl on just like the one our dear Janzee won. It was a little bit chilly in the morning but it warmed up very fast to be a beautiful day. Anyway she took her shawl off and tied it around her waist. She looked so cute and I immediately thought of Janzee. Good talking to you and you take care. Talk to you soon.

We have three Pendleton outlets in Washington State and the small store downtown Seattle, the one where my noseprint is on their window. When I looked at your catalogue I realized that something in there would be a perfect Christmas gift for my Sister. She really likes that store too. I joined a Saturday walking group and today we walked around Seattle Center. We are having our summer now and the weather is beautiful. Love that pillow you are talking about. I also like to decorate in shabby chic. Here is a fun video clip. http://www.videosurf.com/video/shabby-chic-furnit

      • Really special, thanks. I love antique furniture and had several pieces which we gave to our daughter-in-law when we moved here because we got some new things to fit into our smaller house. She can take the most ordinary second-hand furnishings and make them look absolutely great in their home, she has a gift that way. Speaking of walking downtown Seattle, is Shorey's books still there? And do you ever get into the International District? I used to love Uwajimaya's and Higo Variety Store. Alice, did you ever read "Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet"?

        • So many bookstores closing in Seattle. Here is an article about Shorey's. http://www.seattlepi.com/ae/books/article/John-W-… Haven't been to Higo Variety Store but think it is still there. Love Uwajimaya's but don't get there as often as I would like. I like to buy their lucky bamboo and put it in small little flower pots and give them as gifts to friends and family. It costs so very little compared to buying them at a garden store. Anyway love to shop there. No have not read that book yet but it is on my to do list. The moon is full here in beautiful Seattle too! Talk to you soon.

          • That is a great story, Alice. My friend Mary and I used to frequent Shoreys at 3rd and Marion on Saturdays. We'd go down to the big library (we lived way out in Shoreline) and walk to the International District. Visit Higo's and the Japanese newspaper office (for pen pal letters) and walk around. On our way back downtown, we'd stop in Shorey's. In later years I visited the store in the lower Pike Place Market a time or two when we would return to Seattle for vacation from our home in Denver. Maybe you can get to Higo's sometime. I have lots of stories about that place, too, and high school adventures. If you read “Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet,” it's all about the International District during the war. I have given “lucky bamboo” to our daughter-in-law. This summer she has it outside on the front porch because Lars learned to use the watering can and he kept watering it!

  23. I had the most interesting thing happen to me yesterday. A few days ago we were talking about__humming birds. Well yesterday I was sitting outside in my backyard when I heard a sound that__I had never heard before. Out of the right eye I thought I was seeing a beautiful butterfly, but the __sound of the fluttering was a little strong. I slowly turned my head to the right and realized that a__humming bird was thinking about getting the wax out of ny right ear. It was so very close that the__beak was almost in my ear. When we looked at each other eye to eye we both froze for a
moment and then the humming bird got out of there quickly. Of course I have never been as close
to anything during its flight before and it was neat – cool – incredible – fantastic – astounding!!!!

  26. Beehivestate…..do you have a Daily Buzz for us for today?

It's only 84 degrees here in Kansas and a light breeze. I was wondering what the weather was like in Midway.

BrendainKs on September 10, 2011 at 6:19 pm
    • Hi BrendainKs, Just some daily rambling today but tomorrow I will "buzz" on down and get pictures of anything new. The weather is rainy, mid-70's, and we will have thunder showers the next five days or so. My DS and DH went fishing but they didn't have luck and my DH didn't find his lost glasses, darn it! I had Lars today and i did get some cute pictures of him, though.

One of our neighbors is in real estate and I showed him the pictures of our house. He did not like it, said it would never sell because it was too jumbled… He said people like "open" concept. I told him "you're nuts!" and that he just wasn't getting the concept! lol

beehivestate on September 10, 2011 at 10:34 pm
      • He is nuts! I am certain if it were finished and could be rented, our house would have a waiting list. Then you could tell your neighbor, 'I told you so.' :)

BrendainKs on September 11, 2011 at 4:31 pm
        • Well, I guess he doesn't "get" the "old farmhouse with additions" concept VS the "open" concept. I'm sure it will be plenty "open," from the floor plan we've seen. Things change in design, concepts change, I believe HGTV is the pacesetter.

  27. I wish I could bundle up this beautiful Midway summer evening and send it for all of you. We have a full moon and it's very very silvery, many of the farmers have cut and baled hay again… I've lost track, I think this is the 4th or 5th crop… and the red and blue barns on River Road stand out against the early evening sky after the rain. We are so lucky to live here. It's very quiet, very peaceful.

      • Wyoming, I couldn't sleep so I went back and looked at your link. I see two pictures for the 16th, the first was early morning and it was snowing! and the second one was the Ethan Allen truck there in the afternoon but no snow. I also noticed that there was no landscaping done at that time but on the 19th, most of the landscaping was in place. That was easy! I wasn't following the blogs until this past February so I never saw those pictures. I doubt we will have any snow here by mid-October but you never know.

beehivestate on September 12, 2011 at 2:08 am

  30. DAILY BUZZ. SUNDAY. http://www.flickr.com/photos/67137540@N05/sets/72

This is all I could get for you today. I was standing in the road in front of the house to get these and LB came out of the house and yelled at me "no pictures." I couldn't hear so I walked up closer and had a little chat with him and he said get off the property! I said I'm only walking over here so I can hear what you said and asked why no pictures? To which he said they want to keep it a surprise!

I said it's a little late for that! and that I had taken pictures but had not been on their property and would not trespass but I would continue taking pictures. He said well we can't stop people from taking pictures from the road. He said "wish I could show you around but I can't" and I said I know you're just doing your job" and, again, that I would not come on the property.

After that, he said "get off the site" so I went back to my car and drove around on the road. I said you're lucky to have seen the inside, how is it? and he said "it's coming along."

Okay, you guys, I tried my best. Anyway, there's a picture of the garage door down, the new front steps, and the chimney cap. These were all taken from the road. I'm a little shaken. As I was driving off he was writing something on the clipboard in his truck. Maybe I should give it up, what do you think? I'm just having fun and I thought I was doing them a favor. I've never so much as even touched the house and never been inside.

It's cooler today, 59 degrees, light clouds, but bright. I didn't walk down to the river but there were lots of cars parked at the fishing access lot and along the road. I was curious if the decks in back are done but save that for another day, as I didn't feel like hiking all the way down to the back trail and through the grass

I wished "breathles" was with me. That LB has a fierce scowl and he's BIG.

beehivestate on September 11, 2011 at 2:07 pm
    • Who is that on the steps? LB?

I love the garage door and the front steps! I have always wanted steps to just sit on.

I can only speak for myself here……I don't want you to risk your life, because that was a close one. You are more brave than I would have been. Yes, he's just doing his job and he knows what car you drive. I'm sorry you had to go through the confrontation of LB.

Take care of yourself and "stay off the site." The pictures are fantabulous, by the way!!! :) Hugs to you!

      • Yes, that's LRB. I didn't even notice until you mentioned. I'd been out of my car for about three seconds by that time, standing in the road, taking the picture.

    • Wow, he didn't have to be so cranky about it. You were going to bring him brownies! I love your conversation with him — even though he came across a bit surly, I'll bet your cheery personality softened him a little.

      Wyo_Girl on September 11, 2011 at 5:48 pm
      • Well, I don't think I did a very good job. All I managed was one little bit of conversation on the plus side. I feel sorry for him, I think he wants to be nice but he doesn't know how to and still do his job. I just made his day harder for him is all.

beehivestate on September 11, 2011 at 6:28 pm
        • beehive, you are very compassionate….he sounds as though he was cranky (no Pic- a Nic Baskets on his shift) but I think he was not professional in his interaction. He could have used 'Please" and Thank you" ( as in," I am sorry, Madam, I cannot permit you on this site….I will 'thank you' to be on your way"….or "My orders are to not permit photos taken here, so the Dream Home will be a surprise. Will you ' please' put the camera away? " )
I am sorry you were shaken–he did not need to be so rough about it..(..if the supervisor of the security co. reads this blog, you have some employee training to do–your guy is really unprofessional). He could have been firm and authoritative, but respectful at the same time.

LLColeman on September 11, 2011 at 11:21 pm
          • Thanks I only walked on the property because he called out to me and the snapshots were all taken from the road and from my car window. Go figure. I don't want him to get in any trouble, he's just a young guy who needs his job. I've been respectful of the no trespassing signs and will continue to do so. I have no desire to cause trouble for anybody. I love the house and I didn't think it was a bad thing to take pictures from a distance. I sincerely thought it was helpful.

The courthouse steps quilt is one I finished earlier this year. I might re-name it "Steps Around the Dream House" and if I can get a good picture of it, I'll post it on my flickr page. It's queen sized, pretty big. I don't have much time to quilt now that I'm watching Lars most days. That's why I was down at "our" house today on the weekend. I've been there many days during the week and watched from behind the fence on the public land and no one said boo to me about anything.

          • In the photo, I can see that the security guard is young, and he is doing his job–it is not to cause any trouble for him, but he can learn how to finesse things and do an even better job.
Some of us are a bit protective of our nice quilter/reporter……..

LLColeman on September 13, 2011 at 1:19 am
    • Love the photos, especially because of the courage you needed to talk to LB. I am interested in the little cap over the garage doors. It's architecturally interesting, yet it could cause a problem if snow slides off that edge and into the pathway of the garage. I guess it will depend on the material they use. If it's shingles, it will probably be fine, although snow could build up on that and possibly be an issue later in the winter.

      Wyo_Girl on September 11, 2011 at 5:54 pm
      • I need to look at that photo again, I think it's a sheet of corrugated metal over the roof there. That is the north side, it will be interesting to watch the house after the snow flies and see where it builds up. Notice how they've painted the little Juliet balcony to match the dark crib framing? I really like how it's looking. Oh, I see it is metal and you are so right, snow sliding off that side will probably be a hazard for any cars parked in the drive. Many buildings in Park City have metal roofs and it is common to see signs warning not to park close to the roof d/t falling ice hazards.

beehivestate on September 11, 2011 at 6:32 pm
        • I hadn't noticed the balcony paint, so I went back. I love it! It looks like that same metal is over the Juliet balcony. Great idea to protect the balcony, yet I am also worried if that snow will fall onto the front steps. I look at those things carefully, since we have piles and piles of snow that slides off our roof all winter. The piles are more than 8 feet high by Spring!

          Wyo_Girl on September 11, 2011 at 6:39 pm
          • Only those of us in snow country would notice these things. I haven't been here but four or five winters and it sounds like you get more snow than we do.

    • Wow! I think you were one brave lady!! to stand there and try to talk him into a good mood! Good for you. In my opinion you werenot doing anything you could be faulted for. You were not on the site and even the photographers of the rich and famous get to all those photos they take. And this house is much better than anything they take!! ^_^ I haven't been on in a long time so I had ALOT of reading to do to catch up, but I am really sorry I wasn't here to wish you a happy birthday. Happy Belated birthday. Keep up the good work. We all envy you.

    • Nice job. Thanks for taking these pictures. Maybe the HGTV marketing team will realize that they have some bloggers who like fresh pictures. It doesn't take much, just a few snapshots each week of things like the chimney cap etc. It keeps the buzz going amongst what, 25 of us? There will still be another 40 million who will be plenty surprised with the official unveilings. Meanwhile, to host a blog site and expect some of us to blog about potential decks for 7 weeks without any information from our HGTV folks seems rather deflating. I would have quit going to this site months ago without your updates.

      ksmort9 on September 11, 2011 at 7:36 pm
      • I don't expect anything from HGTV at all, but it would be nice PR if the security guy had a little more friendly personality. How hard would it be to smile, you can still get the point across and, anyway, I wasn't trespassing at all. I don't blame them for not wanting people on the property for liability reasons. I'll just keep on, since I wasn't breaking any laws that I know of! Part of the blog is for "eyeballs" (today it's Kenmore, for example) to the sponsors, you'd think they'd be glad for us keeping it going so people will see the sponsors products and maybe buy them.

    • Beehive, I would not go on the property again. If HGTV wants to keep the details a surprise they probably have a point, you probably have one too, though, in freedom of assembly. Take care of youself first. You have been a wonderful super snooper for us so far and have added, bit-by-bit, a little extra fun to my summer in following the progress of this dream. Thank you.

absolutejn on September 11, 2011 at 11:52 pm
      • I've only actually been ON their property one time and that was the first week before any signs were up. Looking over the fence doesn't count, does it?! I never even figured out my camera until this week lol. Oh well, no good deed goes unpunished, or so they say! Glad you've enjoyed my little stories. Thanks for saying that.

    • Thank you once again BeeHive! I wouldn't worry about your "friend" in uniform. I once worked as a security guard while in college, and we tried to scare people away rather than having to confront them. You are fully in your rights on a public road. Be happy don't worry. The making believe one is writing down your license or a description is another intimidation trick too!

EdinOregon on September 12, 2011 at 1:19 am
      • Thank you Ed, I appreciate that info and will sleep better tonight. It's midnight here and I'm still awake, thinking about my day. I can't imagine that HGTV would even care about a few snapshots taken by a friendly neighbor. My little camera isn't THAT good that I could see inside the house! Have a great week out there in God's country. I used to live in Vancouver WA and just for fun, sometimes I would drive over to Portland and "get lost" to discover new neighborhoods.

Maybe Miss Mary will give up some new photos from the construction cameras this week. There should be more to see in back yard. It will be a rainy week, good for fishing.

    • Thanks for the new pics beehivestate. Is it time to start walking around with a plate of cookies? Wear an apron, spread a lil' flour on it? Maybe practice your sweet innocent welcoming neighbor smile? Only when LB isn't there of course. ;) Sounds like he's got your name and number. :S

I think these are the most pics we've seen of the outside of a Dream Home this soon, and seeing as how the outside is nearly done, you've probably taken as much as you can. We've never seen an unauthorized pic of the inside. No No No that's simply not allowed LOL. ^_^

=/ Now we'll have to depend on Mary for a high def. pic of a basket of pine cones with a blurry background of the interior. =/o.0 Thank you Mary, we can't wait for our first tease.^_^

Cami on September 12, 2011 at 11:27 am
      • Compared to you, I'm new to blogging. Probably other people in the neighborhood will be taking pictures. It's a pretty big project to try and “hide” for half a year. My baking days are over and all my aprons are retired but I did used to have an apron that said “I'd rather quilt than cook” and that apron was never dirty!

beehivestate on September 12, 2011 at 11:52 am
        • LOL–beehive,– Cami was referring to last year's Dream Home blog….bloggers were pulling out hair— and posting recipes, talking entirely too much about chocolate, swapping silly skiing stories–all while we waited an eternity for a sneak photo of the home's interior. What did we get–FINALLY? A photo of a basket of pine cones sitting on a living room table–with the rest of the room completely blurred out !!
You can see why all your reporting–and especially now the photos–have been a boon to the bloggers…discussions about chocolate have gone WAY down compared to last year. ;)

LLColeman on September 13, 2011 at 1:31 am
          • Pinecones? You've got to be kidding me!! I wasn't reading the blog until 2/24. I looked back at my comment stream and I asked for Midway 27 weeks ago, 26 weeks ago, etc.

    • Thank you so very much for the photos. HGTV should send you a big thank you for doing all that you have done! YOU are making their job easier. You are well within your legal rights to be where you are! You are single hand idly keeping this blog vibrant, interesting and meaningful. You are saving (HGTV) them work, time and money by not having to send another individual out there; paying their per Diem, flights, hotel rooms, salary and rental cars to keep tabs on the progress of the building. Your interactions are helping to keep everyone engaged in this discussion. They could not pay for this kind of exposure! This blog is an integral part of the program and the entertainment and "BUZZ". You could not write (script) this kind of excitement. Beehive you are part of the program my dear! Keep it up!

hokiemom on September 13, 2011 at 11:20 am
      • Wow, thanks for that, as I sit here eating my 90% dark chocolate and thinking what else I can photograph and post this week and how to avoid BBLRB. Hokiemom, is there anything you particularly want to see (other than the inside)? There's still no sign of a sauna or a smokehouse and they haven't moved the radiator chair down by the river yet but the weather is perfect for a nice pic-a-nic. Hey, maybe next weekend I'll take Lars down to see the property, he can make the most “sourpuss” smile and give a “high five.”

  31. Beehive,
Wonderful photos, Beehive. Really nice. Besides the details of the dreamhome you captured the warmth and quiet of the grasses and woods.
So, the cribbing, it seems, goes on all the exterior walls, in variations of the same design type, cribbing?. The trim paired with the posts (?) in each section is very nice and the gallery of windows where they occur is great. too. With this house I can see sitting outside and just looking back at it, just at the view your camera captures…except sitting down, of course, and sipping a martini…Good job!

absolutejn on September 11, 2011 at 5:39 pm
    • Thanks absolutejn, the cribbing is pretty much just on the game/living room section with the blue walls and the dark beams on the outside. The rest, the gray, is what I'd call board and batten? (excuse my architecture!)

  32. I love big houses. There are only my husband and I , and my adult son at home now, (he moved back home to be closer to his job. Gas prices being what they are) but I have always loved SPACE. If I were to win (I will be crossing each finger and toes too) he would not come with us, as he would not want to leave his brothers and sister. They are all so close. Then I can rattle around in this big ol' house and be one happy lady. The best part? The master suite is no where near where the family will stay when they come to visit! YES! Family and my privacy and quiet time!! We really can have it all xD

    moon_lady on September 11, 2011 at 6:38 pm
    • Yes and if I win, I want that other upstairs suite for my quilting studio. There are plenty of "private spaces" in this house, I like that. even for a big home, it will have intimacy.

  33. Hey, guys, as my friend breathles would say, "I'm just a friendly neighborhood quilter" admiring a patchwork house for the architecture. I'm making a house quilt and I need pictures.

Wyoming Girl, you know the quilt design called "Courthouse Steps?" Well I have just finished one in that pattern and it has the colors of the house, the grasses, and the sky. I'm going to re-name it "Steps Around the Dream House." Maybe some day they will let me photograph it IN the house if I ask real nice.

beehivestate on September 11, 2011 at 6:40 pm
    • Ha ! HGTV should be so lucky to have you enter the front door of a home you kept all of us involved in; let alone to have you show up with your custom made quilted work of art inspired by the House project.
( It sounds exciting, by the way–you know we all will hope you post a photo of the quilt when it's done.)

LLColeman on September 11, 2011 at 11:32 pm
    • I am such a novice that I had to google Courthouse Steps. It's pretty! You'll definitely be able to photograph it in the house when you go on the tours, although you'll probably have to pay $20 for a tour ticket. I love that pattern — it looks like a good way to use scraps. Here's a link so others can see it, too:

LLColeman on September 13, 2011 at 1:38 am
          • It is awesome, if I say so myself! I love this design so much that I've done it as a "color study" four quilts. Just cutting the fabric takes me a few days and I sort all the strips in boxes. I have a design wall made of insulation board covered in white flannel and I can place the blocks as they are stitched. Unlike some quilts, this design has to be made from the top left and work in rows left to right. One time, I made it in all fall colors and with a black border, on which I appliqued sunflowers and vines and leaves all around. I got a ribbon for that one! I love quilting!!!

beehivestate on September 13, 2011 at 10:53 am
          • I give you a virtual ribbon, also…I love vines on the borders and have a sunflower Obsession. I know I would love that quilt. I am definitely NOT a quilter and cannot sew, but I love looking at fabric, and have been known to swoon after seeing a really striking quilt…I'm a quilt fan ! Does that make me a Quilt Groupie, LOL ? I watch quilting shows all the time. I also don't knit, but love intricate knitted pieces and love going to yarn stores. I work with wool fibers and do felting–every sheep I see I want to sample roving of their fleece.

LLColeman on September 14, 2011 at 1:55 am
          • That is exciting, LLColeman! One of my favorite people up teaches wool felting and does the most amazing Christmas Nativity sets. She makes beautiful pin cushions, star Santa's from sweaters, and all kinds of amazing designs on little sweaters that she finds at Deseret Industries. She learned when she lived in NZ for a couple years on a church mission. Wherever she goes, she has her felting with her. I don't knit anymore, once I discovered quilting I was “gone.”

  35. Speaking of construction, my DH is fit to be tied this morning. Last week our daughter-in-law asked him to paint 4 dark brown interior doors to match her other white doors. He took them down, put on a coat of primer on Friday, and was going to finish the job today… in the meantime, over the weekend, she goes to the recycle center in Park City and gets 4 different doors that she says are "the same" and already white and all they need is one coat of paint. She "threw away" the original doors already without consulting him. This after he had told her that replacing doors is tricky d/t the placement of hinges, etc. and especially in an older home. The original doors would've been fine but now it's too late.

He won't even go over there today to babysit with Lars, he said he needs to calm down lol. I'll have to go and hold down the fort by myself. This has nothing whatsoever to do with "our" Dream Home except that with houses, it's "always something."

beehivestate on September 12, 2011 at 11:58 am
    • Oh dear.:S, Sounds like something I'd do. I've learned a few remodeling lessons over the years–the hard way. Door size, hinge placement, door knob placement..that's enough to give me nausea and a head ache. Having someone throw away my hard work too :o :$.
Once she finds out the home improvement centers sell doors without any door knob holes or hinge grooves for a reason, she'll begin to understand why. The only bright side is, those doors are cheaper. Downside–more expensive to buy a router and the right template for door hinge. Plus the door knob drill assembly.

Cami on September 12, 2011 at 12:14 pm
      • Plus the older doors are likely more durable–being solid hardwood. The newer doors are often hollow core and some don't last long with kids about. How strong is that little Lars? It doesn't take much for my kids to put holes in our cheap doors.

Cami on September 12, 2011 at 12:19 pm
      • Yeah, major bummer. I even know of carpenters who won't do doors. It is the one thing I would always hire out to have done. They are tricky.

beehivestate on September 12, 2011 at 12:21 pm
      • Yes, the doors she got at the recycle center appear to be solid doors and they match the doors on the main level and will only need one coat of white paint. It all depends on if the hinges match up. My DH calmed down by afternoon. Our daughter-in-law is so good at finding recycled and used things, it will all work out in the end. Lars would probably punch through those flimsy doors, you're right!

  36. Dear Beehivestate- I checked some facts – taking photos from the road or public right of way is perfectly legal. You have not went into the dwelling and we definitely have not encouraged you to……I surmise some folks from VA and the Blog Cabin were treated like you have been- the young lady who first posted photos from UT seems to have disappeared.

  37. DAILY BUZZ. Monday. On my way home from Park City, I drive past the DH so I did a slow look-see from the car. There is nothing new to report, really, although there was a truck there with window glass in front and I noticed that the rock work in the front of the house is done. Look at the architectural drawings, you can see where that is. Lots of worker bees on site today, air conditioning truck, property maintenance, and I saw that the windows were open on the Juliet balcony and workers were inside, doing what have you.

Wyoming Girl, I've not seen any appliance trucks yet but have been watching. i think the refrigerator is already in the kitchen, though.

I could see the game room deck was unchanged, the decking isn't on there yet. I didn't get out and hike back behind the house, as it's quite a trek now that I won't go over the fence. Maybe later in the week we'll go fishing and while I'm back there I can take a look over the fence.

I've been told that it's perfectly legal for photos to be taken from public property, I don't want to push my good fortune so far, so I'll wait until I actually see something that I think would interest you. For now, you can be content with my ramblings!

It's a gorgeous day, low 70's, sunny and a light breeze.
