Building of HGTV Dream Home 2012
At long last, I am proud to present the construction package where you will discover interesting design and building details about this year’s home. Please take time after you’ve read articles to explore our brand new sister site, HGTVRemodels.com, your source for home remodeling advice.
Post your thoughts, comments and questions below.

Hooray! Thank you so much, I love the great room and never envisioned so much stone work on the interior. The beams are gorgeous and the floors (trestle wood?) are so beautiful. How exciting to see the new picture first! Everyone will be so excited, Mary. Your hard work is appreciated. I can't wait to go back and study every little detail. Love the clearstory windows and the quality of the light is magical. My DH says "ohhh" !!!
HGTV Remodels is great! I just love all the ideas. In our home, HGTV is our number one go-to channel.
What an incredible vision to return to – I love every single thing you mentioned in your post. Do you think the floor is the trestle wood? This great room is beyond my dreams!
Irish, no I don't think the floor is the trestle wood because in another picture I saw pictures of it stacked up in a box, so I'm betting it is probably Shaw engineered hardwood. Maybe the trestle wood is in the beams. It would be a good question to ask Mary, if she ever asks us to submit questions.
mary's hard work? my dad desined that not mary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So your dad did the website work? Or is your dad the architect? Dude!
What a beautiful great room! Everything looks fantastic — thanks so much for all of the new information, Mary! I did a quick look and will be back for a more leisurely study later when I have more time. This was a great idea!
Wow Mary, that's the entire great room, and in focus. I'm shocked.:o:| All those stone accents are giving me heart palpitations. The enormity of the great room is giving me goose bumps. The open beamed ceilings are making me hyperventilate. The gorgeous fireplace is making feel warm all over. The peek at the beautiful floors are making me tear up. I've got it bad. Bad I tell you. Whatever it is– I'm afflicted throughout my entire body. Is this what Dream Homeatitis pervasivitis feels like? o.0:S
Cami, I just got a great idea for Mary and the new HGTV Remodels venue… how to hang doors that you get from the recycle center in Park City… what a great tie-in it would be with the Dream House/Utah theme! When our daughter-in-law brought the baby over this morning, she apologized big-time to my DH for wasting all his effort. He told her okay but from now on, she and our son would have to do all the painting themselves lol and he would help hang the doors and fix the hinges and like that. Ta da! Can't you jut see the program now? Me holding the baby, my DH painting the "bad old" doors, shots of the recycle center and the old and "recycled" doors being dragged home in the back of the pickup, my oh my! My daughter-in-law and son and the baby are all very photogenic and me, I'm okay on my good days if I got enough sleep! and my DH is very good looking (he's often mistaken for DiNiro) if he keeps his baseball cap on. !!!
And Cami, I just say, you have a way with words!
LOL, That would be sooo much drama!!!! HGTV would love it! I can hear the foreboding music in the background that portrays the intense alarm your husband experienced along with the look of horror on his face when he found out about the 4-different-door-deed. Ohhh the anxiety and panic–and impending doom your DDIL must have felt when she realized what she'd done (cue fright music). Ohhhhh the agony…. we'd all be on the edge of our seats, biting our nails. The look on your poor DS face being stuck in the middle of it all, and you refereeing on the sidelines holding the one thing that'll protect you from being challenged on a call of foul play….. Oh my what'll happen?? Stay tuned for The Great! Park City! Hinge Disaster!…dun dun dun dun!!!
Beehivestate– Please tell your daughter-in-law, that it's moments like these that make the best memories. In another year or two you'll all be sitting around the table, and someone will say "hey remember the time when…………. Then you'll all burst out laughing so hard Lars will feel compelled to join in whilst not having any idea why…. only that it's funny.
Ohhhh sighhhh, those are the best memories…. looking back and laughing at yourself–with everyone, even Grandpa.
Yes, especially if we got my DH on HGTVRemodels! A friend once told me that she had a hard time with her dear daughter-in-law and she looked for on-line advice and ended up on the Dr. Phil website. Shortly thereafter, the producer from the Dr. Phil show CALLED and asked if she would consider them being on the show to discuss their issues. My friend was horrified! She told her DDIL and they worked out their problems over coffee at Starbucks and they both said, “ANYTHING to avoid being on Dr. Phil” It was funny.
Quick! Somebody call a doctor for Cami!
It's okay, don't worry, I've got her over here inhaling over a bowl of pinecones.
Yes, whewww, breathing in and out, in and out…. sighhhhhh. Focusing on the pine cones….. blocking out all other stimuli, hooooo…… heeee……. hoooo….. heeeee. The background is just a blur now. That's how it's always been, so fuzzy, relaxing and peaceful. "Breathe in, breathe out….. hooooo, breathe in and out." Ohhh thank you beehivestate, everything is just a blur now.. as it should be. Such pretty pine cones, don't you think?… sighhhhh. How could Mary overwhelm us so? She knows we can only handle one basket of info at a time. It was such an enormous room!! Oh noooo, blocking it out, It's too much, too much!! ..I can't handle it! So many details.
Did you see how big it was? :S You could fit a billion baskets of pine cones in that room. Blurring out the visual parameter again. I'm relaxing. Beautiful peaceful pine cones. No, no I'm fine again.. I've got this. Hoooo heeee.. Hmmm focal point? Breathing in and out? Hoooo hooo heeee heee?? This seems familiar, like I've done this before.. another time another place?? o.0
Take two chocolates and call me in the morning. You can do this!
Cami ,Beehive, you both have me rolling on the virtual floor !!
WOW! That great room is greater than great. True to form, this DH is unlike any of the previous homes. Every year I think how can they outdo themselves, and every year they do.
Can't wait to see more, because what I have seen is just so fantastic.
If it were any greater, we'd be speechless and then where would the blog be? Everybody! Be sure to look at all the thumbnails on the HGTVRemodels link. Awesome!
speechlessness just comes in small intervals. We get over it in a short while! Of course those
of us who talk to ourselves have a slight advantage over others because we practice more!;)
Good one. My DH says I'm great at getting in the last word!
Looks like they hit it out of the ballpark on this one!! The past homes have been great but this one looks to be truly amazing. I'm in love!!
I agree!! I was totally in love with the New Mexico DH but this is better yet! I didn't think I would ever want one more than I did the NM DH but…I DO! The hubby is even enthralled over this one. Yep maybe this one is ours!
Absolutely amazing Great Room. I can already imagine my entire extended family in here for Thanksgiving…REALLY hoping I win this home…fingers will be crossed from now until the end of the entry period next year!
Very nice photos and descriptions Mary. Thanks!
I love this photo! What a beautiful room it is!
Summer, did you look at EVERYTHING? She gave us so much, Mary you are generous beyond words!
Mary! Mary!! Mary!!! I just spent an hour reviewing all the outstanding pictures from HGTVRemodels… no wonder you've been neglecting us, and for good reason. There's enough "talking points" on there to keep us going for at least a month! Good work, you are terrific! Where shall we send your chocolate?!
I see the floor plan for the upstairs bedroom is a bunk room, well I'm sad you've taken my studio for that space but it will be great to have a place for my grandchildren and I like that the space is above the game room and it will be keeping all the kids in that one part of the house. And it will also let the house sleep more people. Good plan. I'm liking this design more by the day!
Okay, I have to watch Lars now, he's pulling out all the CD's from the cabinet!
Well, being that there are so many ample entertaining areas, you could consider using the game room for a studio–it has the space to hang up quilts and the natural light is beautiful in there…..the great room is so big that lots of activities could go into a corner of that room…..
I just about never sat down when my grand kids were toddlers–I could not even talk on the phone, because they got into more things the minute I got on the phone–never mind trying to go online !
I'm not getting much sewing done since Lars was born. He's so much fun, I don't care. I'm sure with a house that size I can find a place for my studio. Maybe that smaller bedroom downstairs. I'll reserve judgment on the upstairs back bedroom until I see what Linda envisions.
I second the nixing of the bunk room. No grand kids here yet, so it would end up as unused space in our family.
stephenwnagy–what gives me pause is the description of the " built-in " bunks…what a pain if someone wants to remove those and use the room for a different purpose.
It would make for some interesting home renovations right off the bat.
And while I'm sure they couldn't do it quite so easily, because of the builder's and interior designer's original decisions, I'd find it interesting to see a show where they revisit past dream homes and look at what the current homeowners have done with the places. How they've transitioned from "dream" to "reality."
That's a good idea, I'd like to see it. I still can't figure out how they're going to do this and keep the Juliet balcony , according to the floor plans.
I thought about that as well. The sketch certainly doesn't match the windows.
Bee, Where did you go to see this floor plan with bunk beds? You gals are just too smart for me!
SandyLA Try this link. http://www.hgtvremodels.com/dream-home/hgtv-dream…
Thank you very much. I did find it by looking at the main page again. Just to be sure, I’ll use your link and see if it the same I found on my own!
Bee, I don't think those plans are for the studio bedroom because if you look at the bunks on the girls side they are in front of the french doors. Linda wouldn't put bunks in front of a balcony with french doors. I have no idea why those plans are there but I don't think the studio is going to be a bunk room.
Irishsprite, in another place in among the pictures, they tell us that "studio" bedroom is for the kids and it IS a bunk bedroom for girls and boys with the bathroom in the center. Don't know exactly how they'll do it but I'm sure they won't block our french doors. Hey, it's turned very dark here for 4:25 p.m. and the wind is up something fierce, we're getting a storm with big raindrops. Typical Midway end of summer.
Oh, I am so sad…I didn't find that when I was looking at the pictures. The last thing I pictured up there was 2 bunk bedrooms. I wonder why they say the house is only 4 bedrooms? Now we'll have to rethink our studio space…maybe the sitting room (it does get northern light).
Like that idea.
I just looked at all of the new photos, and I really do love this home! Great floorplan, beautiful construction, and excellent location! I have always wanted to go hiking in one of Utah's gorgeous state parks. And, this home is great for entertaining. I love it!
I can't wait to see how the home will be decorated.
What did you think of the color in the master bedroom?
I'll wait till it's finished but it seems that Linda always picks a questionable color for at least one room (like the GH Pepto-Abismal). So far this is winning.
She likes to keep us in suspense!
LOL, Jayintexas–good color name.
I love glazes–they can tone down or otherwise modify a color that may be too strong…. I always tell myself I will glaze over colors if I don't like them.
How do you do a glaze? it sounds like a good idea.
To me it looked more bronze in color and I love it!
I liked it. It is very nice. Oh and Summer I can't wait either. I'm so excited!
WOW what a great room, Oh my it's a GREATROOM!! WINDOWS I just love windows!! Look how many
windows or doors, I will have to look again to be sure. Linda, please be light with any coverings. I am assumming that the glass is the newer type that keeps heat out or in depending on the weather. The stone-
work is just beautiful. Thank you Mary for this picture. Thank you Bee for getting me over here but I had
some trouble with my computer. I have not been here for a while and evidently it forgot the way to get here!
But I'm here now! CONGRATULATIONS MEG the new Design Star and to Erik as well (I think he abso-
lutely grew the most this season and had there been another week the outcome might have been different.
I once told Jack to be sure and put back the double sinks in the kitchen, however I have become a fan of
the farm sink and we are sure to see a big one in the kitchen with this amount of bedrooms!
I want a farmhouse sink, I love that style. Since looking at the pictures, I have whole new enthusiasm and ideas for how the house can be lived in.
That I decided right away even before I knew what the inside would look like. I just imagined it!
I guess they are all doors! WOW what a place to have a wedding! Jack, could you guys make one
gigantic table out of some of those similar rafters? What beautiful colors. I am sure I will have to look
at this picture a few times to see it all. Are there patios on both sides of the Greatroom? (Family room)
Yes, patio on the front porch and the back porch and a custom-built porch swing on the front deck. All the decks have generous roof overhangs to shade from summer sun and winter snow, so we can use them all the time. People here love to grill and the outdoor kitchen will be a huge hit! Lots of doors to get outside and play.
HEY, Mrs. Last word, do they have any screens out there?
No screens. No gutters. Those are Pella windows, though, so I'm betting there will be screens. When we had our house built, Pella was the best! A few months after we moved in, the rep came by in person to see if we were happy and he replaced several of our screens. I'm thinking screens on the windows but not on the french doors.
Boo Hoo – itchy itchy
It's certainly a great room for Christmas.
Lots of lights and decorations would look great from outside.
I can just imagine what that would look like, simply magnificent!!!
Wouldn't it be fun if they decorated for Christmas for the virtual tour?
If they don't, which is usually the case.:( We'll send you on a mission to sneak in a tree. We'll send in Cindy Loo Hoo for back up. The Grinch was no match for Cindy Loo Hoo. HGTV can't be any grinchier than the Grinch right?:p
Who is Cindy Loo Hoo? I'm clueless out here in the sticks in Midway……
Didn't you see The Grinch- who stole Christmas? Ok I guess I spelled it wrong. It's Cindy Lou Who. http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0007930/
OMG! Did you see those colors are the same Linda used in the MBR? The pumpkin and the avocado?
Grinchy colors Linda? You like Christmas don't you? Not looking very encouraging for finally getting a Christmas Dream Home.
Personally I like the colors you choose Linda, but I've always wanted to see a Dream Home decorated for Christmas. Pretty please:|
They have never done that before. I do suppose that someone will be offended though. The big room could be just decorated in silver and gold and fancy with nothing religious. That could work couldn’t it?
Oh you're right, of course. I never thought of that. Sorry to be so clueless!
Great photo!
I know I'm not very likely to win the house. And couldn't afford the taxes if I did. But it's nice to look and imagine. Thanks for creating what looks like a great great home.
Did you notice the picture-postcard views from the upstairs balcony? OMG! And I thought the video about the load-bearing walls and how you should always keep your house plans so you can know which walls are load-bearing, that was neat.
All the stuff you learn after the fact and can only use if you're fortunate enough to move/build in the future.
I pass along these tidbits when I can, especially to my youngest, who wants to be an architect.
stephenwnagy, never mind the taxes, I doubt I could afford the HOA fees! That's what's so great about dreaming… anything is possible. An architect would be a great thing to be, maybe some day your youngest will say, "oh yes, in 2011 my dad pointed out to me these load bearing walls in the Midway 2012 HGTV Dream Home." Back in the day!
how much would the taxes be on a house like this
I'm sure someone will tell us eventually. Federal taxes would be pretty easy to calculate once we know the total value of the package. It's way too early to be talking about taxes.
"It's way too early to be talking about taxes." I absolutely agree, but I think it's ALWAYS too early to talk about taxes. The winner will have a lot of guidance when the time comes, and the rest of the group should just enjoy the excitement of this amazing house!
I totally agree. And yet whenever I tell people about the house, the first thing they ever ask is about that very thing. Go figure. I'll take that problem any day.
I just think mortgage! And negotiating a real value for the house.
Why not? That's a good plan. This house will also be very rentable d/t the prime location… any season.
Beehivestate when we built our home X# of years ago- we had the one set of plans framed as art for our office. The new owners were thrilled at our foresight and loved that we left them for them.
I love love love that idea! I'm going to tell my DH and see if we can work that into our “new” home here (4 years).
One of my favorite things in the Stowe house was the barn door on the wall. I'm so excited to see they are using a sliding barn door for the upstairs mbr suite to separate the sitting room from the sleeping area.
I know that is so cool. I really like the barn door. I also like the great room!
WOW! This is so impressive. Truly a "DREAM HOME". B)
Hello StasiaF, welcome to the blog. This home is truly amazing. I can't wait till it's all done.
I love all the new pics. It is a totally awesome home. Did I read correctly, lol there is 15 airconditioners.
There is? Wow that's a lot. I just have 3 in my house. I'm glad they have the interior photos. It gets people more excited! I know I'm excited!
What?? If that's true I hope they're talkin' about simply opening 15 windows for a nice cool breeze.:S Oh my, the utility bill.o.0
im not sure if i remember seing that i will have to go back and check but if it is then it will more than lickly be the split unit type that work for individual rooms its pretty energy efficient because you are only cooling the rooms that you are using.
wow ok i went back and check it did say 15
ok i was wrong i went back and looked at it and what it says is fifteen-seer air conditioning units thats and energy efficient rating. lol i knew that couldn't be.
The paragraph says there are 3 furnaces, 3 air conditioners, and 3 water heaters.
I have to say after looking at the new pics and reading all of the notes on the home, I'm truely impressed. I have to say I just simply love it. Words can't even start to describe how much I love it. I'm already a huge fan of homes and home building as it is, I mean I'm into everything from how the foundation is done to the utilities in the home. So looking at the way this home is put together is just great. Just cant wait to see how the outside is going to look when its done.
W O O O W… W O O O W… Those are magnificent, amazingly elegant stonework and beams!
Wow, every room looks beautiful so far. Love the colors and all the windows. I hope there will be blinds of some sort for privacy? No need for heavy drapes etc. I do kind of wish that the floors were a little more distressed but they truly are beautiful. Now for some comfortable furniture and I can dream of moving in! Who wouldn't want to win this DREAM HOME. Hopefully the taxes aren't too high there. Never been to Utah so I don't know. Am willing to up root and move if I win. I will surely keep dreaming.
I think they said somewhere, something about window coverings… I'm thinking Lutron shades again, that would be nice… the ones that are computer controlled. With the deep overhang on the roof, though, privacy might not be so much of a problem. i guess you wouldn't want nosey fishermen coming up to the fence to look at the house, though.
Ladny, If you win, I will lone my cats to you for three days (I think that is long enough). They will
distress the floors for you! I really thought more discussion would be held on the floors! I think
they are as beautiful as any of the other things in the room.
It has such a lodge feeling. Amazing, HGTV, the DH just keep getting better and better. If there were long dining tables and floating candles,..it could pass for Hogwart's Greathall!! heehee I really love it! What a cool house.
Ha ha, rebornqueen ! Imagine decorating the great room at Halloween a la Harry Potter !! With that ceiling height, i could even fly around up there on my broom !
Okay I can just see that now! Watch out for the ceiling beams while you're up there.
Thank you, Mary, for all of the new info. This is like opening presents at Christmas! I want to savor every gift, but I feel the rush to tear open the packaging all at once. I'm going with my way. I just looked at a couple of topics, then tomorrow I'll look at a few more. Besides, who knows how long it will be before we get a feast like this again. Wait, I think I just mixed my metaphors…
OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! I LOVE our house!!!
Can't wait to move in.
Did you see the little "playroom" niche at the top of the stairs in the bunk bedroom? Just right for my "Larsie"
That's pretty neat!!
Lars will like that space!
I wonder where they got the ideas for the paint colors? I am not real fond of that green color, unless Linda can work her magic like always and make it beaUTiful!!!
Very interesting construction details. I did notice that they raised the house two feet to keep it above the flood plain. After seeing all of the flooding this year, that fact doesn't exactly thrill me! ^_^
I think they also raised it to capture the view of the river. There's always a first, but this area (middle Provo) hasn't flooded d/t the water control dams above and below a 9 mile stretch of river.
I thought the same thing. The whole country has seen some extrordinary weather recently.
Finally saw all the new pictures…this is without a doubt the perfect house for me and my family. REALLY hoping I win this home….absolutely amazing….
I have to agree, this COULD make an incredible Great Room after designer Linda Woodrum works her magic, but unfurnished as it is, what comes to mind is that it would definitely make the perfect ballroom, or square dance hall. The word 'impressive' only begins to do justice to this interior space.
Amazing that one photo proves this Provo River home merits a 10+ rating among Dream Homes so far.
When I've recovered from my long day, I'll take more time to check out all the delicious details.
Dream Home 2012 — More than Midway to paradise!
In the great room at least, there will not be much need for art pieces–the views, the stonework, the french doors provide the truest art with the surrounding natural beauty.
Yes, I noticed that too. Wonder what they will put over the fireplace.
A TV?
I can't quite visualize a TV going there. Maybe some kind of sculpture like in the Stowe house would be nice. I'm thinking the TV will be in the living room/game room area… and they always put TV's in all the bedrooms.
I hope they put in electrical outlets hidden into the stone for decorating purposes.
Our house is beaUTiful!!!!
I like the dance room idea!
I recall you had that issue before, Brenda! I think it's a great idea. How are we going to decorate for the holidays without electricity?!
That's what I was wondering!! ^_^
A picture of my family!
The funny thing about that is in Utah there is almost always a BIG picture of the whole family somewhere prominent in the house.
I've already got my family photo all picked out for the Dream Home Great Room. This is a typical get-together for my clan, which tends to get a little rowdy at times — but thankfully, never any serious injuries.
http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQzd9a4eR…
I have some close friends who come from Utah!
Where are they from? When you win the house, they can come visit and I can meet them and see if they have a big family picture! (so I can prove my stereotype lol)
They are from Salt Lake City and do have a picture that is very large hanging in the livingroom so that all the kids will fit in the picture. One family has six kids and only 12 grandchildren so far. The other one has only two children so far. She has a picture on her wall of her parents and all of her siblings and their children as well as her own family next to the picture of her husband’s family picture of his parents, siblings, their children, as well as his own family! I met both families when their children were very young. Half of their siblings and/orchildren live in and around Salt Lake City and the rest of the clan live here in southern CA. So I do know about the room needed!!!
See, I was right about the picture! The most grandchildren I've heard of so far is one friend who has 36 (as of 3 years ago). Me and my little ONE is enough for us.
My husband and I are very impressed…the great room is fabulous! We can really imagine ourselves looking out of all those wonderful windows at a beautiful winter scene, with snow drifting down and the fireplace burning. We love the fact that the fireplace has a raised hearth so one can sit right in front of it on a cold night.
QUESTION: In the picture of the master bedroom, we noticed a large piece of ducting built floor to ceiling, against the wall. We were wonder what that is for…is there going to be a fireplace in the master bedroom?
Good eye! I'll go back and look, too. Welcome to the blog.
I looked but couldn't see what you're talking about, a fireplace would be very cozy but I don't see a chimney so maybe not.
I think that the ductwork is the hood vent from the kitchen range . I printed out the floor plans and placed the second floor on top of the first. Not adamant about it but its a guess. I do think there will be a fireplace in the master suite – not sure which room.
Since they made the bedroom on the second floor a dorm space for boys and girls I do think they are going to make space 2 on the first floor an office.
Well an office would be nice. If you had a home business and had callers, they could easily access that space without going into the main part of the house. Now I need to go look for that pumpkin-color bedroom again.
Frist … I like the interiors.
Great room is great, of course. The stone work mirrored within the interior is a nice touch. I mentioned on a previous reply that Christmas should look quite spectacular, with a tall tree and lots of nice lights.
Dining room uses a nice soft color for the walls to lighten the natural darkness of the stone walls within the great room and echoes the color on the higher walls within the great room, creating some nice continuity.
However, the avocado color (?) on the master sitting room walls … that will take a lot to welcome. I like the green in the laundry/changing room better. The furnishings are crucial. I'd like to see some mid-tone cream and blue colors. Probably more blue. Don't know for sure. Trying to picture how I would write a scene describing the room. It definitely seems smaller than I expected from the floor plans.
Second … not sure at all how I feel about the idea of bunk beds in the second floor bedroom above the game room. I liked the idea of a single-person or two-person bedroom (queen bed) much better.
Nice descriptions. I need to go back and look at those colors.
Okay, I do like the master bedroom color, still not sure how it coordinates with the master "den" sitting room and did not find the location for the fireplace yet. Still and all, it's a good idea. This is so much fun!
I'm with you on colors!
It's pretty bright but maybe it will be toned down with furnishings in there. Even the ceiling is the same color.
I knew you wouldn't like that yellow-green, Omaha Lady, but what about that copper color in the Master Bedroom? I think that one's a winner.
lots of earth tones throughout
it should call for a subtle interior design and selective "splashes" of color
I agree with you!! I like the earth tones better with a color splash!! It works better with the natural stone and wood.
Love the MBR color – but the sitting room takes some getting used to!
Thank you Mary! Once I saw the clerestory windows in that room I knew it had to have a dramatic ceiling. Its almost as I pictured. Reminds me of the interior of a log home in Winter Park, CO.
Not liking the color in the MB- I do love the bench in the master bath shower. I also like the floor drain in the laundry area. What a great idea if the washer leaks. And 2 washers and dryers! I wonder if one could get by with a small clothes line. I do love hanging clothes to dry in the open air.
Sitting here hoping Beehivestate and I get to have a weekly coffee date once we are neighbors. Wouldn't that be an added bonus for the winner to have a wonderful "neighbor".
Thanks, Nebraska. If you win I'll make you a quilt so when you sit out on your porch swing on a September morning you can keep cozy. The north side of the house will be the cooler side. It's already cooled off and I have a long-sleeved chamois shirt on this morning just to go out to the mailbox.
I'l take that quilt! I can imagine this entire home being filled with quits. I would put coordinating quitls on each of the bunks. The same colors and fabrics but different patterns. Talk about old farmhouse- woohoo.
I can do that for you! And we need flannel for winter and something else for summer. I change out my quilts about every month or so. My theory about the old farmhouse look is that quilts never “clash” and work in any decor. I will make a quilt with chickens for the kitchen!
QUILTS with patchwork designs, solids, and even personal ones with things that that person
likes, or sayings stitched in ! Ideas are running wild!
I have a design that is denim and colorful 1" strips in the Log Cabin design. The denim strips are 2" wide and I've embroidered all my favorite places that we've visited so far in Utah and Colorado, since we moved here. I also made this quilt for my sister and put all the places in Southern AZ so she could use it in her home in AZ. The back is flannel. We use this as an outdoor picnic quilt if we go to the summer evening concerts at Deer Valley.
Sounds beautiful! I had a dear friend who sewed dresses for her grandchildren, and made quilts for all events. She was in two different groups!
Beehivestate…….There HAS to be at least ONE quilt from you in that house!!!
It wouldn't be the same without it! A quilt made with love!!!
If you win, I'll make you a quilt, Brenda.
Bee, you paint the most beautiful pictures with your words! And those quilts sound fabulous!!
Oh my goodnes this is my room I love it I love it did I say I love it enough. I love windows and high ceilings these is truly a dream room and as we see more I am certain it will be more than dream home. How can I win this house is there any magic?
Well, this is the beehive state so maybe if you eat honey every day you can sweeten your chances! I ate a lot of Ben & Jerry's for the VT home, it didn't work but I was happy!
Oh that sounds yummy I will eat as much honey as I can and it's good for you. Thank you beehivestate for your suggestion it's a great idea. I also looked at the pictures that you posted before they are so wonderful, you are one brave lady for taking so many chances with pic. of the house we really appreciate it.
Even in the remote case that you don't win, you will be healthy from all that honey! Try to get Utah honey if possible!
Love, love, love the spaciousness, all the windows, and the warmth of the fireplace. A gathering place for the heart and soul of people. It lets the outside beauty join the inside beauty!
Taking just a momentary sidebar from all of the latest Dream Home excitement —
Come to find out that Linda Woodrum, along with every single HGTV fan out there, will soon have plenty of HGTV inspired home furnishing and remodeling products to choose from, since HGTV and Bassett Furniture just recently announced a partnership to create an HGTV HOME branded line of custom upholstery and accent furniture available in 2012.
If that's not enough, here’s a sample of products already in stores:
HGTV HOME paint by Sherwin Williams (interior paint and paint tools)
HGTV HOME flooring by Shaw Floors (carpet, hardwood, laminate, and area rugs)
HGTV HOME bedding in select Bed Bath & Beyond stores
DIY Network Mosaic Tile Backsplash Kit, available in 700+ Lowe’s stores
News is that coming in 2012 are lighting, live plants, wallpaper, exterior paint, decorative accessories, and outdoor furniture.
Amazing! Before you know it, Dream Homes will be built with HGTV HOME products from the ground up.
Now, back to enjoying every bit of the news and views of the latest Dream Home, where it's definitely More Than Midway to Paradise!
That's great to know. I like Bassett.
One issue with that is then a part of the profits from those products would have pay for the home instead of sponsors.
I had one question about the bunk rooms. At one end there are supposed to be french doors opening to a small space- however the new foor plan shows bunks covering that area. The outside does not show they have changed those doors to windows. Oversight?
I was just re-reading all the posts to see if anyone had caught the mis-match. You would have to climb through the bunk beds to get to the juliet balcony if the sketch is correct. I suspect that the final design resolves the issue. Why not present a more accurate "sketch". Keeps us on our toes… And yes that looks like the hood vent thought he bedroom. It's gonna be interest'n to see how the resolve the bump…
I've been away all day and you guys have gotten way ahead and made all these discoveries. I was wondering about the bunk room, too, as it shows the shower/bathroom area right in the middle of the space. What the heck?!
On further observation, the 'sketch' of the bunk rooms is way off. The floor plans show the correct layout. Also the framing shown in the pictures confirms that fact. The 'sketch' showed separate boy's and a girl's bunk rooms, however now there is only one sleeping room, like Stowe DH.
I was under the impression that they had initially chosen the master bedroom area for the bunk room then changed their mind, so the drawings are for two different sized spaces.
I think they made changes after the original plans were published – like the Blog Cabin. The room is two rooms with a bath in the center.
I'm still in wonder of the 15(?) air conditioning units. Oh my goodness! I can understand it though since the house has so many different spaces but oh my goodness! 3 gas funaces? ok ok time to calm down. I have to take a breath, this is gonna be on my mind for now until a winner is chosen. Darn, I have a way to go. Better buy a breathing machine! I am so jazzed. :p
its not 15 a/c's what it says is fifteen-seer thats a energy rating
Oh thank goodness someone cleared that one up for me. HAHAHA I can breath better now! Whew!
I have to go back to the photos and verify this… yup, mraction is right! it's a 15 SEER air conditioning unit. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is a measure of the cooling efficiency of the air conditioner or heat pump. The higher the SEER number, the more efficient the system is at converting electricity into cooling power.
That should give the lucky one some peace of mind… ^_^
Its 3 AC's, furnaces, and water heaters.
Once again I goofed. Thank you for the clarifcation. I will go back and reread and hopefully can redeem myself with you all. I was in total awe with the house so far, I misread it.
How are you all keeping this all straight? After I found and looked at all the new pictures, I was very
confused! I have no idea how any of you know which room is which. Which room is yellow? That is
my favorite color! I had a yellow room as a teenager!
Did I see a shower with three windows ? Very daring. The most daring since NM and the see through
shower wall. This is not a wall, or is it? I guess so. Was this Corey's idea, or Bo's or was that a Jack
thought? Hhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
the yellow room is the master bedrooms' sitting room
mraction, Thank you so much. At least my other room will be yellow. I can always paint the bedroom later.
Why DID they put windows in the shower?
Maybe it's one-way glass. I don't think so, though, because when looking through my binoculars awhile back I could see the tilework. This reminds me of that bathtub in Stowe!
Hopefully no one will be in viewing distance when the owner takes a shower.
I wonder what their solution will be.
Hey there beehive. So you're going back to the DH to poke around again? LOL
Somewhere in the text I read that the shower windows is for the indoor/outdoor experience. Don't know how they will close them for privacy when it is wanted (except load up the window sill with decorative plants and interesting objects). BUT the windows really lighten up the master bath, maybe that's what they had in mind..and it will be LindaWoodrum's job to keep us covered in an imaginative way.
I don't see my post…wonder where it really went BUT somewhere in the text I read that they were going for the indoor/outdoor experience in the master shower. Only thing I can think of to not get arrested for getting clean is pile up decorative plants and decorative items on the window sill? AND the bathroom really needs the light from those windows or it will be too dark and gloomy.
Your guess is as good as mine! Great views!!
Maybe they thing the steam will cover you up lol
That is a brilliant idea. Thanks
The bunk room could be used as a guest bedroom. It sleeps 4. But I am wondering about the game room…….It says that the game room has a flat screen television, a gaming system, and card tables. Is the gaming system video games? Sounds like fun!! Also, a dart board would be a great thing to add to this room. Just a thought.
No the bunk rooms sleep 4 each space….8 total.
I love to play darts! Thanx for the idea!
I just found out that the virtual tour begins on Dec. 1st. I can't wait!!! How exciting!
I just saw the duct work you guys were talking about in the MBR. looks like they are building a box around it. I think that is right over the kitchen space, maybe it's a vent for the stove? Just a wild guess. I have absolutely no skill in visualizing from architectural drawings!
That is what I said yesterday.
right you have a good eye and you definitely saw it before I did. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what they do in there. Not sure I like the bathroom in the center at all, it's different but functional for the bunk room idea. There's definitely a Juliet balcony at the end of that room.
These bunk rooms are not easy to adjust to – especially with the bath in the middle. I am trying to reserve judgment until I see them completed, but it's hard. That drawing is very confusing with regard to the balcony…
Irish, do you recall way back when tivo_girl visited and photographed the site while it was just framed in? I remember she said something about seeing what she thought was a “jack and jill” bathroom. If I can find that post, I'll look for her pictures because that might just be the bunk room set-up. I think this was back in early June.
Brenda, I don't see any outlets in the stone but often they are placed in the hardwood floor in large rooms. We have one in our home like that in the great room. Most likely there will also be outdoor outlets suitable for heavy-duty.
Maybe the outlets are on the side where no one can see them very well. (By the door going outside)? Maybe?
I studied the photo but couldn't see them.
I've been super busy at work so have not commented in a while. Love all the new pictures. The home looks fantastic. Love the floors. The great room is perfect for parties. I would love to sit on the porch looking out towards the river. I wonder if you can hear the water flowing from the porch. As usual it is going to be hard to wait until the online tour.
Yes you can hear the river from the back porch and from all the back side of the house and every deck. It is one of my very most favorite things about the location.
That is truly awesome, bee!!! I can even forget about the bunk rooms for a little while on that news!
I think the architect did a superb job-(-but I have to bring up the universal access matter–) I do wish he could have taken the opportunity with the first floor guest suite to at least have a roll-in shower and wider doorways in that area. This concept is mentioned by bloggers with every giveaway home built…just one first floor area that is disability- accommodating is not too much to ask for.
How hard would it be and, after all, none of us are getting any younger. Some day this will all be standard.
Agreed, and we would like to see it sooner than later. Many bloggers, who have since left the blogs, also voiced concern about universal design.. a couple of ladies use wheelchairs, and had difficulty imagining how they'd manage in any of those homes. Dreaming is the best part of the contest process, and nobody should be excluded from dreams.
To make doors wider, have roll-in shower, higher toilets, would not affect the look of the home very much. It's only by continuing to advocate for these things that they will happen some day. I'm glad you keep bringing it up.
Here. Here. I so agree with you.
Does the River Meadows Ranch Community have a clubhouse with a gym?
Summer, no in answer to your question. The best gym in the area is The Fit Stop in Heber City. It's about 10 minutes from the house, about 6 miles drive. RMR has only a few houses so far and no plans for a pool or clubhouse.
While blogging about Dream Homes, I came across some happy news this morning about Scripps Networks' home town —
In partnership with HGTV and DIYNetwork, Rebuilding Together has announced the launch of Rebuilding Together Knoxville (RTK) to extend the organization's work to the local community. With nearly one in four people living below the poverty line in Knox County, more than 3,000 elderly low-income households, and more than 4,000 frail elderly — RTK will provide free rehabilitation and critical repairs, including disability accommodations, to the homes of low-income Knoxville residents. The new affiliate will hold its first community rehabilitation project for three homes on Saturday, Oct. 22. Interested volunteers may sign-up by visiting http://www.rebuildingtogetherknoxville.org .
Three cheers for HGTV, DIYNetwork, and the start of a valuable new chapter for Rebuilding Together's Knoxville project!
Thank you so much for this information. Even though Rebuilding Together Seattle fixed up our home on April 30th, many volunteers spent many extra days planning for our special event. We will never forget how kind everyone was. Have to share, I am scared to death because I was asked if I would come to their annual fund raising event and read my thank-you note to all the volunteers. What an honor. I will be rubbing elbows with many important people from Seattle. How scarey is that. HGTV, DIY, and RT do so much good for people. And thanks again for posting this. I want to tell the world how great they are.
That is awesome! You will do a wonderful job. if you're too nervous, maybe you can sing your thank you! lol
You are so so funny. I can just picture me doing that. I will think of your comment when I am in front of all those people. Would you believe when I was in the Army I had to brief a General and it didn't bother me. Now it is hard for me to go into Starbucks to order anything because all my words get mixed up. My friend that owns a hole in the wall restaurant said to me when I ordered "you are speaking Chinese and I know you are not Chinese" that is because he is Chinese. Thanks Mrs. Bee for your kind words. Now I know I will do just fine.
You will have to tell us how it goes! I think it's exciting you were chosen.
Just remember, alicesoneysmom, that regardless of title, accomplishments, or even the lack thereof, those "important" folks are just folks like everyone else. Imagine you're at your computer, posting a comment to the Dream Home blog, and tell them what's in your heart. Your words are bound to hit the mark and put smiles on every face, just like here in the blogs!
Thank you so much for your kind words DBCoop I needed that!
The fact that you were invited to speak at this event says it all, Alice! Obviously they are all eager to meet you and hear what you have to say — I think you couldn't ask for a more appreciative audience, and I know you will do a wonderful job! Enjoy yourself and just let all of these new friends know how you feel, like you do here on the blog where you always bring joy. Have a great time!
C&E thank you for your kind words. I just got a call today from Rebuilding Together Seattle making sure I felt comfortable reading my thank-you letter. They even invited my counselor from the Seattle Vet Center, the one that helped me fill out my application, to attend the event also. They are the kindest people. And so are all you guys you are the bestest and thank you again. You mentioned earlier how much fun your dogs and Daisy have chasing each other. Soney would have a great time with them and of course he would show off all his baseball skills.
That's great Coop! Thanks for posting.
And while I'm on the news circuit this morning — for fans of Curb Appeal: The Block, the HGTV show's talented architect, interior designer and landscaper extraordinaire, host John Gidding will speak at the 28th annual Fall Atlanta Home Show from the Hometalk Home Show Stage, Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 and 3 p.m. The Atlanta Home Show will open its doors Friday, September 23 through Sunday, September 25, 2011 at the Cobb Galleria Centre.
See you there!
Yes and he's going to be doing the Home Show here in Salt Lake City this fall, too.
You've got to be Gidding me! That man sure gets around, doesn't he?! How does he have time to get all those shows taped, blocks of home after home turned from dogs to dreams, and still make all of these home show appearances. A true one man wonder.
obviously not married
I'm baaaack. Did I hear/see correctly 2 washers and 2 dryers in the same place? Too bad one isn't upstairs and one down. Lots of laundry to drag around the place. Laundry chute hiding somewhere from upstairs? HMMMM??? The great room is absolutely drop dead gorgeous! Can we hang a swing or trapeze from the rafters??? Ropes for the kids to climb? Great Gym space, art studio, ball room, square dancing. Hey after you finish with your sauna down by the river, and refresh with a little vodka, come on in for some Scandinavian dancing. Hey with all the left over trestle wood a little sauna shack down by the river, complete with a little wooden walkway would be ever so nice! Think about it!!! Pretty please? Wouldn't need a hot tub.
So which area upstairs would you pick? The master bedroom? or the other bedroom? This house was made for hide and go seek! (That's not a bad thing.)
SweetLiz you can say that again…. hide and go seek? Olly Olly oxen free! I was thinking the "bunk room" area and/or Master Bedroom area might have a laundry area for all those linens after company leaves . I'm so confused-getting old and senile=lost . This house is so huge you might need a map or gps to find your way around:-)). Not that there's anything wrong with that….
I guess a small stacking washer and dryer in the master bathroom would have been nice. Everything is spread out so much. The bunkroom will be upstairs in the area of the lower laundry room. But then there is the other bedroom that is near the kitchen. Oh my, such a problem to have. lol
I'm really interested to see how the great room is going to be decorated. I'd be afraid that with all the stonework I wouldn't be able to make the room feel warm and light enough. Oh, well, I guess I'll just sit back and leave it to the experts, but 'll admit it, I am intrigued by this one.
I know, I know, watch and learn, isn't that what HGTV is all about?
Ok this house has bumped Texas as my favorite. WOW!!!! Thanks for the pics and info.
Awesome! A breathtaking room. great colors and light. What a restful room. The melange of windows – clerestory, floor to ceiling, French doors give so much light and lightness to the room, and nowhere direct sunlight.
A little touch I like is the hall leading off the fireplace wall….intriguing. That could be made a lovely space. Well, I too feel like its Christmas, as some others have said, and this is a lovely, lovely home.
Wow, and then the landscape!
The builders and contractors are doing a SUPERB job in our house! I can't wait until it's finished!!! Thank you to all who are involved in this project!
