HGTV Dream Home’s Most Unique Features

I was traveling through the western Pennsylvania countryside last week and snapped some photos of corn cribs, which served as inspiration for the exterior cladding of HGTV Dream Home’s kid’s wing. This home, though brand new, is being built to resemble a homestead that’s stood for generations. I love the thoughtfulness that’s gone in to each and every detail.

If you have a moment today, please check out the HGTVRemodels.com slideshow that showcases the home’s most outstanding architectural features and home systems.

  1. Wow. Mary is serving up a new blog buffet. Will she also serve up a new dish on the Green Home page? Stay tuned. Mary is working fast. I can hardly keep up with her.:|

  2. I'd say exterior texture has been taken to a whole new level in the Dream Home. Very eye-catching detail in every angle, corner and facet. This Dream Home is no longer a "diamond in the rough" with so many different beautifully cut facets.

  3. This home is definitely something different. I am loving what I see so far. Can't wait (as always lol) to see more.

  5. Thank you for these pictures, Mary! Now I really see where the "crib" in crib framing comes from! Oh, and a while back someone asked if there were really going to be 15 A/C units in the house, and I finally figured out what they were talking about. "Fifteen-SEER air conditioning units" does not mean 15 units — fifteen-SEER is an energy efficiency rating. SEER means "Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio" and the higher the number the better the efficiency, so 15 is an excellent rating. I'm glad I finally figured that one out — the idea of fifteen A/C units in one house was really boggling my mind! xD ;) o.0

  7. That's great, now what's a corn crib?o.0

Cami on September 22, 2011 at 11:17 am
    • LOL oh my it is a storage place on the farm for ears of corn used for cattle feed. The large open spaces help the corn dry. The wooden ones are not used so much any more.

Nebraska on September 22, 2011 at 11:45 am
    • You know the answer to that question, Cami. A corn crib is where baby ears of corn are stored.

DBCoop on September 22, 2011 at 12:50 pm
      • Arrrrghhh, now I'm really confused Coop, that's what I put on my salad.
Can you imagine having to shuck baby corn? If I had to do it myself I could only have one treasured ear of corn on my salad.:|

They Cribbed the Corn Crib for our Crib… Got it.

  11. Uh-oh, Mary admits to having been off to Western Pennsylvania — possibly searching for the perfect location of the next Dream Home? She's bound to find that babbling trout stream and historic, locally quarried limestone house sooner or later.

Speaking of limestone, I bet the stone quarried from the unusually named Starvation Reservoir for the Midway DH has an interesting story behind it. Regardless of the tale, it has a pretty story to tell on our Dream Home.

DBCoop on September 22, 2011 at 12:58 pm
  12. I like the idea of the 2 foot "riser" plinth for a number of reasons, both practical and scenic. After all, take that additional 2 feet, add a couple more sitting atop a kitchen counter bar stool, and you have all the makings for a perfect view out over the rolling waters of the Provo River and the mountains beyond.

When it comes to the kid's wing crib framing, that'll be perfectly appropriate. With my nephew and his wife expecting a new family addition any day now, I'll have cribbing on the inside AND outside of the home.

Certainly not least by any means, it's obvious that a lot of thought went into the location and type of all those energy efficient house mechanicals. However, as CplusE noted, I'm glad that doesn't include 15 A/C units, but rather three 15 SEER A/C units! (And a rating of 15 SEER is excellent indeed!)

  14. Western Pennsylvania, Mary? I thought your dream home and family were on the eastern half of Pennsylvania. Were you at the recent filmings for Showhouse Showdown? I visited the one filming near my Mom's at the new Edgewater development in Oakmont. Sneaky how they film each designer "winning" with the local crowd cheering, so its still a mystery until the air date…

    dreamn_again on September 22, 2011 at 3:35 pm
  15. I was looking at the house pictures, and in the attic…….is that "daylight" that connects the ceiling to the wall? Just curious. What is up with that? Do birds and whatever else flies get in?

BrendainKs on September 22, 2011 at 9:37 pm
    • No- as the quip explains – there will be baffles that and soffits that allow free flow of air under the roof but above the ceiling. Homes on Holmes does a great job of explaining exactly what those are- almost every show they show why the homeowner has issues with roofs, leaks, etc.

Nebraska on September 23, 2011 at 1:49 am
    • We've had baffles and soffits for years now. No problem with flies, birds, or any other "uninvited" guests.

  17. I love this blog. As a participant, I am a newcomer, but I have been reading it daily, on the sidelines. lol
I am perplexed about the Kids Wing. I have loads of grandkids who sometimes stay over at my home. With even as few as four (4) grandkids, there is a need for access to two (2) bathrooms often during the day. Also, as the children grow older, girls and boys want and need more privacy. I hope that the final plans will take this into consideration.

Many a year back, about 20 years ago, I got a 99 on an important test and a friend started calling me “99.” That was really a funny show, I wish it would come back in re-runs… also I'd like to see the M*A*S*H episodes and the old Bruce Willis movies!

One of the funniest gadgets on the show was the "cone of silence":

  18. Mary has posted more construction photos — is that a hot tub I see on the back deck? I love the shot of the house at night. It looks so warm and inviting!

CplusE on September 23, 2011 at 8:12 pm
    • The evening shot of the home IS beautiful. I just might like the evenings at the Dream Home even more than the days. Well, I'll have to try it out for a week or two until I make up my mind….

That could be a hot tub on the raised back deck, CplusE. We'll have to wait and see. In photo #58 of the Construction photos, Part Two (Dream Home Main page to access: http://www.hgtv.com/about-us/hgtv-dream-home-2012-time-l... ) you can see someone who is either hooking up something — or has possibly fallen into whatever they're installing. I doubt it would be a fire pit, since they have the outdoor fireplace, and it probably won't be a fish cleaning tub/sink unless beehivestate's DH and DS talked Jack T in to agreeing that being so close to the Provo River made it a must have feature.

DBCoop on September 23, 2011 at 11:18 pm
      • Good eye Coop. He is not that far in so it could be a gas hookup for an outdoor fireplace/pit? If he was deeper down I would suggest plumbing for a hot tub.

EdinOregon on September 24, 2011 at 12:36 am
        • You may be right with your outdoor fireplace/pit guess, Ed. I thought that might be the case too, but then I wondered if they'd have the patio fireplace and a firepit. Well, I suppose you can never have too much of a good thing — and a firepit (maybe similar to the one by the Vermont DH spa) would sure keep you warm on those colder Utah nights.

DBCoop on September 24, 2011 at 1:28 am
        • I think you could be right, Ed. I zoomed in on photo #60 and it looks like the opening in the middle is not that deep or wide — you can see something in there. It also looks like it might have a rock surround. A firepit would be wonderful and family-friendly on those chilly Utah nights!

CplusE on September 24, 2011 at 7:47 am
    • Thanks for finding the new pictures, I've been looking every day, too. The main deck opening is way too little for a hot tub, and anyway, the hot tub is on the other deck over by the living room/game room (crib) wing. If it's not some kind of planter, I think the opening off the main deck might be an outdoor fire pit. How cool is that?! Sit outside by the fire and catch the view of the river as the stars come out at night.

  19. I thought that only Mr. Coop could scare Mary into writing a new thread! I couldn't post for a couple of
days and when I get back, a new thread on the GH blog and the DH blog as well. Yipee! Two such
beautiful homes for young and larger families. I heard for a long time now that many younger families
need to be able to hope for a win that is a real possibility, that will fit their family, and will be in a place
that is family orieted. Well here it is for you…. two great homes in family centered areas. It appears that planners are hearing the ideas that poster have and are really trying to bring it to us. They have
succeeded!!! Maybe in the future the older crowd will be heard and there will be another large one level home…. I hope.

SandyLA on September 24, 2011 at 12:59 am
    • Sandy, I just watched an HGTV ' Househunters' episode with a lovely young couple searching for a one level home in FLA. They have to sell their 2 storey home because the wife has to have multiple surgeries for Rheumatoid Arthritis in her ankles,( and as she recovers each time from surgery, she has to use a wheelchair during her recoveries)–so they paid attention to flow and doorway widths to accommodate the chair. One blogger this year has written about a child who uses a wheel chair, too.
So it is not just a concern for elders or multi-generational families… and HGTV should know better.

LLColeman on September 24, 2011 at 2:25 am
      • It's a big house, alright, but with the main floor guest suite, I think it would be adaptable. The width of door frames for wheel chairs is a good point. It seems like a person could get around the main floor pretty well and the laundry, kitchen, bedroom, great room, decks, would all be accessible, as would the game room. I've also seen those gizmos that go on stairs so that you can get upstairs. I had a period of half year where I couldn't get up and down the stairs and I know it's not easy to cope.

beehivestate on September 24, 2011 at 9:37 am
        • Of the 4 giveaway homes( Urban Oasis, Green Home, and Blog Cabin, in addition to this one) the Midway DH has the most accessible areas in its first floor–but I am unsure about the door width of the guest suite. It is workable, and having you as a neighbor is icing on a (honey) cake !
The Urban Oasis has the elevator to get to the condo, but the tub is tricky for lots of people to enter, and there is no roll-in shower. The Midway DH guest bath might also not have a roll-in shower–not sure…..

LLColeman on September 25, 2011 at 12:10 am
          • We'll have to keep these few things on the front burner, someday perhaps, they will become standard.

beehivestate on September 25, 2011 at 12:54 am
      • Obviously I did not see that that episode.  I do know it is now just aProblem of elders, it is across the board.  I really understand that they cannot build a home for handicapped residents, but the parcels they usually get are completely out of whack for lots of people! If or when I win a gorgeous home, I will have to put in all the bells and Whistles myself! It is just hard to see such beautiful homes they I would have difficulties getting around in that is all. It is a bit frustrating. Thank you for your comment; I am sure there are many out there who would like to see a one level home.

Good thing I put on long johns… Passed the Dream Home right on by the first time (throngs of bicyclists out this morning – is it always like that, or was there a special event?) – was in Midway before I knew it, had to circle on back… it's a pretty thing, that house… and the river, saw someone in hip waders fly-fishing on my way through… and Park City, Midway, and Heber City are all lovely little towns…. and the mountains…. beautiful! I really really hope I get the job I want, cause I really don't want to leave here!

  22. I was just thinking about some of the recent Dream Homes, and the range of styles we've seen over the years. From mountain log cabins to ski-in ski-out camp lodges, coastal contemporary to classic New England cottage, tropical island retreat to wine country farmhouse, sunny beachside plantation to dramatic Pueblo-styled Southwestern, and now a country casual 'cut-up' homestead. Each distinctively finished, evocatively sited, and attractively furnished.

Which naturally brings up "load-in" day at Dream Home 2012, when all of Linda Woodrum's interior design choices of furnishings and accessories are delivered and perfectly placed. Hoping it's soon 'cause I can feel the anticipation and excitement rising in the blogs day by day — when the chorus of demands for the virtual tour reveal will reach fever pitch!

It could happen any day now, and let's hope our spy in the sky, or rather busy bee in the Midway hive will be able to buzz on by and give us a hint of the magic that's to come.

Sweet dreams of our country home that's definitely More Than Midway to Paradise!

  23. Good morning everybody, on my way to workout today I saw four small mule deer right by the River Road on my right, across from Memorial Hill. It's unusual to see them this early in fall. On the way home, I have an outrageous view of the hills that cradle Midway City and they are absolutely scarlet red. It is the prettiest I think I've ever seen them. Maybe last winter being a record snowfall, I don't know, but it is unbelievable. Tomorrow I will go see our DH up close and personal and take pictures for you. Have a great Sunday!

Here's what's going on in Park City this weekend… building the scarecrow trail at the McPolin Barn. I'll get you a link: http://www.parkcity.org/index.aspx?page=230

And here are some scarecrow pictures. By the way, you can see the scarecrow display right from the highway between Kimball Junction and Park City. It is so much fun. People bring their bikes and ride the trail. http://utah.todaysmama.com/2010/10/21/scarecrows-

We won't be able to see his plane arrive from our home but we should be able to see it take off from Boeing Field. Anyway this is a funny video clip of move-in day and it was filmed in Vermont. My mama used to be so scared to go over that bridge that she made my dad drive all the way south and go through Olympia. When it blew down she said, "see, I told you so!" They used to call it "galloping gertie." http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=old+tacoma+na

This is the restaurant I would go to when I was stationed at Fort Lewis called Galloping Gertie's. It was a fun place. This is sad but thought I would share. http://www.komonews.com/news/local/59689932.html

  27. Hi Mary, This past weekend I was also in Western PA, Pittsburgh. Awsome weather and ND beat PITT!!! Go ND! OOOPS too much infomation. The view from the top of MT Washington was nothing less than spectacular! Nice Condo's up there! Nice place for an Urban Oasis!!!! IMHO! Great FOOD, Gobs of Sports: Penguins, lots of activites, river tours, walking, hiking, biking, bars, music, it just goes on and on. Heaven on earth. Yes Pittsburgh PA!!

Now I totally get the "BLUE" color! Thanks for the visual assist. Looking thru the crib and the sky in the background. Didn't put it together. Your photos brought it home! How could I have been so stupid. Thanks Mary!

hokiemom on September 25, 2011 at 9:46 pm
    • When I came on, I didn't even notice the blue! Look how easily I got used to it. In fact, it is really
quite pretty. There is less blue than I had thought there would be. Quite different and interesting
I am not sure I really see the patchwork pattern.

SandyLA on September 26, 2011 at 3:03 pm
      • Yep the PINK is now a faded memory. I suspect that the cross beams, balcony etc. will be painted a shade of grey and allow the blue to become mostly background. HMMMM??

hokiemom on September 26, 2011 at 9:43 pm
        • The balcony is painted a dark brown, same as the cross beams on the crib framing. Looks good. As we drive by almost every day, I am always surprised how good the house fits on the lot, as if it's always been there.

granintx on September 26, 2011 at 10:33 am
    • Three golf courses: The Homestead Resort, Wasatch Mountain State Park, and at Soldier Hollow. There is so much to do around here that I can't even begin to tell you all of it. Soldier Hollow has cross country skiing in winter and even a famous tubbing hill. The little steam train, which locals affectionately call "The Heber Creeper" because top speed is 28 mph, has "Thomas the Tank Engine" events and all kinds of other things like that. At The Homestead, you can swim or scuba in the famous "crater." Hiking galore. Fly Fishing on the Provo, ATV on the trails, bike trails both paved and single-track, etc etc…

        • … and snow shoeing at Wasatch Mtn. St. Park or Soldier Hollow is free. Two reservoirs for boating, swimming, water skiing, wind surfing, ice fishing is popular in winter… horseback riding is big-time, many people own horses. Also there is a rec center for soccer, basketball, and a wonderful gym called The Fit Stop which even has an indoor climbing wall. You would pretty much have to be “brain dead” to be bored around here lol.

I can't wait to get HGTV'd right in my very own home, on my schedule, 24/7!

DBCoop on September 26, 2011 at 11:09 am
    • Do you know if they will have it available on subscription? I'd love to get it right at my home! If this is just a test issue, I'm going to for sure look for it and buy it. Thanks for the heads-up!

      • Here's just a tad more info from what I've read to date: HGTV Magazine's initial distribution will be 350,000 copies and its cover price will be $3.99. A second test issue is planned for February/March (on sale January 17, 2012). If consumer interest is deemed strong enough, full-scale production will continue as of 2012.

    • DBCoop – OMG – Another magazine to add to my huge collection I barely have the time to read! But, I always love looking at all the beautiful pictures and aren't we mostly "visual human being anyway?" LOL I think I would definitly take HGTV's and phase out my Veranda.

  31. That looks a lot like the back of the house. How did you find this? You are amazing!

    • Hi DeerSpring, I hoped to get down to the DH today but was babysitting all day and the baby is fussy d/t a cold so I was pretty tired when I got home. Funny how when the baby cries like that, it makes ME want to come home and cry! Maybe tomorrow I can go look and see. I did notice a lot of activity and earth moving as we drove by this afternoon, maybe they are landscaping. I always have my camera with me so I'm ready for any chance to snap a shot.

  32. I am hoping for a back patio with a grill and plenty of seating. The view from the backyard is amazing!!!

  33. No, this is not considered early. It takes a long time to build the float and then paint it. They use
volunteers (most of them do) to put the flowers, buds, greenery, and petals in the last few days.
I always wanted to volunteer but just didn't get around to it. It really is a fun thing to do.

  34. I love it so far. I do hope there is a pantry in the kitchen and a 1/2 bath on the first level for quests. It is great that some bedrooms are on the first floor with their own bath. Hopefully Linda will put a pull out couch in the game room for over-flow guests? So far looking terrific and much more universal then the Green home. Oh yes, is there storage in the basement area where the furnaces are? People usually have lots of stuff to put away like Christmas trees, bikes, etc.

Ladny on September 26, 2011 at 4:13 pm
    • Hi Ladny, I don't know about pantry but there IS a half bath on the main level, just behind the second bedroom suite downstairs and behind the kitchen.

We also have a home built on a crawl space and we keep the Christmas stuff, the fold-up lawn chairs, and a few other things down there. The DH has a deeper crawl space than ours, so it will be even more functional.

  35. Now that Summer's heat is fading into the beginnings of cooler Autumn weather, visions of brilliantly colored landscapes are dancing in my head.

So, in a timely article, according to TripAdvisor.com, some of the places voted best for Fall leaf-peeping are Park City, Utah and Stowe, Vermont. (Wouldn't you know — coincidentally they're two of the most recent Dream Home sites.)

Many other scenic locations include Camden, Maine; Shenandoah National Park, Virginia; Aspen, Colorado; White Mountains, New Hampshire; Adirondack Park, New York; Smoky Mountains, Tennessee and Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

I might have to say that Asheville, North Carolina is one of my personal favorites, but the Napa Valley is always high on my list when the grapevines turn the vineyards into storied landscapes of rich Autumn colors and dappled shadows of sun and shade wherever you look.

Surely though, every blogger and Dream Home fan has their own favorite Fall color wonderland. Feel free to share yours. I'd love to put some new travel adventures sites on my bucket list! (In addition to the always impressive HGTV and DIY home sweepstakes locations of course.)

    • If you're up for it, an autumn hike at Mt. Rainier in Washington state is unforgettable. Hike to the fire lookout at Shriner Peak or up to Indian Henry's Hunting Ground. Not easy but well worth the effort. I love love love hiking at Mount Rainier!!!

      • Thanks for your suggestion to take a hike, beehivestate — on Mt. Rainier in Washington. I'll definitely take a look at it. Have to say I've never been in the area, other than flying over that magnificent mountain. Other than Seattle, I don't have much on-the-ground experience with the state of Washington at all, though I know a beautiful place it is.

As I often think, it just takes more than one lifetime to see a tiny slice of all the scenic wonders here in the USA, much less around the globe.

DBCoop on September 27, 2011 at 1:10 pm
        • Great! I've hiked everywhere on that mountain that you can get to on a day-hike. I've been up to every fire lookout station except High Rock. This is a perfect time of year for it but you've only got about another month before the weather turns. If you hike, be sure to take a “bug net” to go over your hat. Mt. Rainier is the ONE thing I really miss so much about our move here. Stop for breakfast in Enumclaw and check out the Pony Express cafe for a hearty meal. On the way home, The Mint is great for pizza.

  36. The more I see of this house, the more I love it! Our family took a trip to the Grand Tetons last week, and we almost took a side-trip to Park City, UT. We had it all mapped out, but in the end just ran out of time to make the extra trip. I would have loved to see the next dream home in person, but I guess I'll just have to keep watching here. I think this one really might be my all round favorite!
