Cool Design Component
Today, I’d like to share an amazing before and after from HGTV Dream Home 2012.
The inspiration of house planner Jack Thomasson, a glass staircase railing system lends a contemporary design aesthetic and complements the rustic ranch style of the home. Douglas fir mortis-and-tenon timbers comprise posts and rails, with custom-cut glass pieces between posts. The transparent treatment is repeated in the game room’s Juliet-style balcony rail.

I dearly love the floor plan design of the 2012 Dream Home. I can't wait to see the inside pictures of the kitchen and bedrooms. I have been comfused on the design of the bunk room, above the game room. Is it going to be divided for both boys and girls or are the bunks being placed in a single order. I hope it will be like the hand drawn picture with bunks on each end for boys and girls. I gues we'll know in a couple of months. Does anyone have a better idea of how the bunk room will be organized? Let me know.
We don't know yet, the pictures aren't very clear about the bunk room. It will be fun to find out.
DAILY BUZZ. LOAD-IN DAY!!!! http://www.flickr.com/photos/67137540@N05/sets/72…
Just driving past on my way back from the dentist and I hit load-in day! I can't believe it! The road was closed by the security truck but I got a few shots of the house and the Ethan Allen trucks. I didn't go around the back, as there were so many camera crew around and workers. I did get you some photos of the landscaping in front and on the side. They used the same as here in my little neighborhood… the tall clumps of grass… it looks very neat and the pictures show the bbq and how it fits into the back (I got that picture by going down the road toward the neighbor's house and using my zoom). How exciting!! The sun's out, the sky is clear from the morning rain, it is a perfect day for this. Oh! notice the Juliet balcony in front and the use of glass instead of a wood railing. Also, I just LOVE the alpine trees they planted in front. Oct. 4, 2011.
Wow, we're getting closer to the online tour and interior reveals every day now.
WOW!!! Beehivestate!!!!
Wow!!!! That's my word for these pictures!
I love the landscaping they are doing at our house! Is that Jack and Linda in those pictures? I think so!! At least, it looks like them.
It's going to be beaUTiful when the snow is falling!!!
Can't wait!
I think it must be Jack and Linda. I told my DH "there's Monica!" but he did not agree. Lots of camera people on site. I think I got a picture of them.
Thank you soo much the pictures are great !!!!
I love Ethan Allen. They are my favorite company when it comes to furnishing your home I am sure we will all be impressed by Linda Woodrom's design ideas for this home.
You're welcome. I'll try to get us more. I love Ethan Allen, too, and have bought many pieces of their furniture, things that I have in our home even to this day, 25 years later. I even have bought rugs from them. The furniture we no longer needed when we moved, we gave to our DS and his family and they are enjoying it still. This year, they needed a rocking chair for the baby's room and I took an EA double bed that we'd had quite awhile and I traded it for a rocker at a consignment store in Salt Lake City… this furniture just lasts and lasts and always looks good.
Great pictues! The DH seems to be close a corner. I always felt it was closer to the center of the property — half way between the lake and the street. This house is so beautiful, and to think, initially, some bloggers were worried about the blue exterior. You have done a phenomenal job of maintaining the interest and excitement of bloggers in this home. I wish HGTV would extend an offer to you to work in the same role for some of the other giveaways, as well. They could fly you to different locations to complete research and "undercover" assignments that are driven by blog comments and queries. Would you be interested? (Smile)
What's not to like? Of course I'd probably have to decline anything that would take me away from my dear baby grandson Lars!
Hi again, I just drove by the house on the way home from Park City and even in the rain it looks really pretty. The blue is quite outstanding as an accent, very distinctive, even on a rainy and gray day.
I liked the placement of the BBQ as well. Nice photos. Looks complete and looks quite homey.
Thanks, you're right, it's looks fine!
Wow! Wow! Wow! (One "wow" just wouldn't have displayed my excitement!) I had house guests yesterday so I didn't get on the blog, and look at the activity I missed! Load-in Day! Woo-Hoo! I am so glad you got to see it, Midway, as you deserve to catch this after all of your scouting reports. Love the photos, and I'll go back over them in a bit. So exciting!!
Part 2… I can't wait to see the back landscaping but I will go in the afternoon and hike in from the back, access at the fishing parking lot access point. The grasses should be dry by then. Isn't it exciting?! I came home and burst into the house and told my DH I needed to use the computer immediately if not sooner so I could report to the bloggers lol.
Okay, now I have to stop with all this fun stuff and take care of Lars for the day. Happy Tuesday! I forgot to say it and my picture doesn't show, but there were 3 Ethan Allan vans.
VERY EXCITING!!!!
Brenda, Hi! I just put up a whole batch of new pictures.
I posted something on the "new" first snow day pictures you posted and it isn't there. Anyway, thank you for taking those pictures!! I wrote some comments on some of the photos.
I can't wait to see it in person!!
Thank you, Brenda. I'm always very energized when I go in search of new pictures of this home.
I'm surprised that HGTV didn't contact you earlier about load-in day, beehivestate. You could have put on your work clothes and helped Linda and Jack organize the whole affair, and make any necessary placement alterations of the furnishings.
Well, exciting news nonetheless.
From your photos, I have one other point to make, or rather a question to ask, but aren't those trees planted awfully close to the house. At least they appear to be from the angle of the photos. Will that be a problem in later years as the trees spread out their branches?
Coop, I thought the same thing but in actuality I think they are far enough away from the building. I'll get a better look later when there isn't so much activity and I have time to lollygag. BTW, the security guard this morning was NOT “Leroy Brown,” and he actually returned my smile and wave.
Yay!!!…..about the security guard! I was thinking the same thing about the trees being so close to the house. I suppose they know what they are doing! They've done it for years!
I guess, if necessary some years down the road, with those beautiful trees well established, you could always have the house moved further back from the road, and closer to the river. That would make fly fishing from the back patio a little more feasible, assuming you were really good at casting. :p
Or you could always cut down the tree and use it for the Christmas tree.
I would decorate the trees where they live!
yes, good plan.
Or, maybe better yet, just build out and extend the house around the trees. Not only would you add more square footage to the house, but come the holidays, you wouldn't have to go out in the cold to decorate them.
As the designers always say, there's nothing like bringing the outdoors in!
That would be a take-off on “the Tree Room” at the Sundance Resort… it has a tree right in the middle of the restaurant.
I think I'll go with the Tree Room idea. Wouldn't you love to have this right in your own home — the Tree Room is the height of rustic elegance: soft candlelight and crisp white-linen tablecloths enrich the rough-hewn, lodge-style look of the woodsy dining room. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook a forest-scape and a tree growing through the roof brings nature comfortably indoors.
I'll have a cup of hot tea with my tree, please!
Oh by all means, tea, this is Utah after all.
I LOVE that idea!!
You have caused lots of excitement! Have you ever taken Lars to see our home, or would he
run up to it? This is so much fun! I read Load-in day and that's all it took for me, I just giggled.
Gee, I have a dentist appt. next week myself so I hope something so exciting will happen to me.
You arre just so lucky or psychic, I'm not sure which. You have been so kind and generous to
us and we really are very greatful to you, Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!
Hi Sandy, Larson has never been to the house with me yet but I bet he would charm the heart of every “Leroy” with his big smile! I'm waiting for the baby mama to come get him so I can go back this afternoon and get pix from the back. Yahoo! It IS exciting. When I saw those three big Ethan Allen moving vans there, from the road, I couldn't believe my good luck! I was just going to go back by today and get pictures of the landscaping and voila! It's too much fun!
Woooo Hoooo!!! YAY!! Beehivestate!!!
Thank you so much for your efforts and time that you spend in keeping us up to date on our house!
Hey guys, I just had an inspiration… maybe if I go to the Dream House this weekend with Lars, I could get Leroy Brown to hold him and let me take his picture, you know, "Lars and Leroy at the HGTV 2012 Dream House" I wonder if he'd go for it? Maybe his heart would "melt" a little and he'd even smile!
Great idea!!! Cute kids always melts peoples' hearts! Tooo many s's.
My plans to visit the DH after dinner tonight were spoiled by another lightening/thunder/rain storm that came up suddenly. Our weather is supposed to change to the cool side starting tomorrow. This morning I had to turn on my heated leather seats in the car (ahhh! now that is luxury… whoever invented them, I love you!!). The wind is coming up now… it's amazing how quickly these storms can materialize. We'll just stay in and watch baseball. Wow, it just got completely black/dark outside. I mean totally dark, in an instant while I was sitting here.
Uhmm…. have you noticed a generator for power interruptions, etc. at the DH?
No, but in all the time I've lived here (over 4 years) the power was interrupted only two times, briefly. It's a small rural area but not all that “remote” from services. When I lived in Tacoma WA, we had power outages up to a week in winter one time, it was gruesome. We had to go to a motel.
I join everyone else with a big THANK YOU, Lars' Grammy !! We love your sleuthing and photo snapping !! You can show Lars this blog one day and read it to him when he's a bit older.
Now there's a thought. It's absolutely pouring rain this morning. It would be a good day to photograph the house because no one would bother me! The weather guys said there would be snow above 7,000 feet, which would be on Timpanogos. When it gets light, I'll be able to see that from my upstairs windows. It has been great fun reporting to you all, I'll miss it when it's over.
But then, you will be blessed with a new neighbor! Hopefully it will be one of us!
I am ready to see more of this home. Hopefully a new update tomorrow.
That would be so lovely, another update from Mary.
Hey everyone – the American Planning Association named the 10 best neighborhoods in the US. My neighborhood is one of those!
Congratulations!!!
Now that is some top recognition, kudos !!
I notice that last year on Oct. 8th, there was an announcement of the 2011 HGTV Tournament of Roses Parade float on the blog, so maybe we will have something like that pretty soon. It will be fun to look forward to and now we know there will be one and some of us have actually seen it, albeit fleetingly. I hope I don't get in any trouble for saying this.
There is a natural waterway behind my home and a man made "lake" in front. We are encouraged to keep our grass cut low to help control snakes, fire ants, rodents, armadillos, and other intrusive pests… (We've even got two alligators in the canal….) I noticed that the yard around the DH seems to be pretty small and tall grasses predominate. Is this a common landscaping pattern? Does it present a challenge for outdoor activities for young children?
I didn't get a very good picture of the front yet but there is a good amount of grass lawn. Otherwise, it is all natural grasses and very pretty. Kids can play here with no trouble and it will be a great place for adventures but smaller children will need you to keep a close eye out for their activities. Yes, granintx, I would say its pretty typical landscaping for around here. The DH sits in the center of the two lots and there will be tall field grasses all around. Quite beautiful.
I got mine today. Did you get yours yet?
My copy of the brand new, premiere issue of HGTV Magazine, that is! I've only had a few minutes to glance through it so far, so I'll need plenty of time to sit down and read through carefully. There's sure a lot to like!
Great articles and insights from and into the lives of some of HGTV's best-known stars. As usual, tuning in to my strongest interest is the "real estate spy" dream home house hunt. I love keeping up with what's available in every corner of the US. You never know when I might be tempted by a charming and simply irresistible bargain — and in an intriguing new town somewhere far from my California roots, or maybe right next door!
I went for the year subscription and haven't looked in our mail box yet but I'm psyched to see it!
LOL, Coop ! I wondered what you were talking about–I thought you were going to say "Flu shot" !
I'm getting mine tomorrow! lol (flu shot, that is!)
I got mine last week — my flu shot that is! And every year I have the very same reaction to it the first couple of nights — flashbacks of the movie "One Flu Over the Cuckoo's Nest."
I got my fly shot last Friday — last year I had very little reaction but for some reason the one this year was very painful for a few days and made me a little feverish for about 24 hours. That's still better than suffering with the flu, though!
I got my copy yesterday!
Sounds like Midway is getting some rain and SNOW!!!!! But not enough to accumulate much. At least that is what weatherchannel.com said today when I checked at work.
The mountains will be breath-taking!!
They are by themselves and when snow is on the peaks, they are more beaUTiful!!!
It's raining here and in Park City but not snowing. I don't know about up on top of the pass but only rain where we live. Rain and gray skies. If it snowed, there will be new white stuff on Timpanogos tomorrow morning. It's been pretty brown the last few days.
On December 1st the virtual tour begins, and I have never been more anxious! I can't wait to see how this one is going to be decorated. I am sure the inside of this home will be just as beautiful as the outdoor views of the mountains. But that does not mean I plan to spend all of my days indoors. Not hardly! This location has some of the best hiking in the U.S. and I plan to take full advantage of it. How much fun it will be!!!!
It will be TONS of fun!!!
Off topic but I just noticed it's the very last day to enter the UO giveaway. Good thing I went over there, I've been forgetting to enter that one. Good luck all of you!
Do you have FB?
yes I do have FB
The glass railing is a neat idea, but I also agree with those people that say it would be a full time job to keep them clean. What those pieces of glass really need is some sort of anti-smudge coating.
I see lots of bulldog and Bernese mountain dog nose prints on the glass panels but I won't mind cleaning them.
Wow, contemporary meets hardy simple post and beam style railings. I love eclectic. Wish the pictures were in bigger view.
This house keeps getting better and better. I love this contemporary yet ranchy style. Can't wait to see the rest so excited!
