A Trip to Midway

“I wasn’t prepared for the intensity of color.” That’s probably the first thing I’ll say if and when someone asks, “Hey, Mar, how was the trip?” The scenery is awe-inspiring, from the cottonwood and scrub oak-dotted landscape to snow-capped Mount Timpanogos and the babbling indigo blue waters of the Provo River, slicing through prairie land on its journey to the Utah Lake.

Today marks the final day of our trip to HGTV Dream Home. I’ve been gathering information about the home’s interior design, while our photographers snap photos of every square inch of space, all in preparation for the launch of the virtual home tour Dec. 1.

So what’s it like? The answer very much depends on what room you happen to find yourself in. If you’re enjoying morning coffee in the great room, then “light,” “bright” and “happy” are words that might pop to mind. If you’re lounging in the first-floor guest suite, “oasis” and “calming retreat” seem most appropriate. Relaxing in the family room? The colors and fabrics might put one in mind of the Old West and saloon interiors. Each space has an interesting story to tell, with design inspiration woven into the very fiber of the home.

On a personal note, we’ve had the pleasure of taking breaks to watch our colleague fly-fish from the banks of the Provo River. There’s something so transfixing about the experience. I’m not sure if it’s the sound of the water, the swish of the fly line or the gentle rustle of prairie grasses that soothes me most. I’m thinking it may be some combination of the three. And then there’s the brilliant autumn sunshine that bounces off the water and warms your cheeks — complete serenity.

This isn’t the sort of home and property that instantly sweeps you off your feet. The feeling grows slowly, sneaks up on you in a warm and comforting way until that moment when you realize something has changed: that you are smitten.

  3. DAILY BUZZ. MONDAY IN PARK CITY. 10/24/11 A week before Halloween and the colors in historic Old Town are intense! http://www.flickr.com/photos/67137540@N05/sets/72… NEW PICTURES!

You like? Watch it slideshow first, then for comments. These are all historic homes from the 1800's. Some great restoration/remodels but they are not allowed to do anything out of character with the original structure. I love love love all the beaUTiful colors today!

To me, these are all DREAM HOMES!

beehivestate on October 24, 2011 at 10:32 pm
    • Beehive, absolutely agree ! Park City is another fantastic community, and you have such a good eye for capturing the details and the spirit of the place. I love this Old Town area and aren't the churches beautiful ? I went so crazy when I saw the Victorian that DIY was renovating in VA for the 2011 giveaway; I have a weakness for old houses.

LLColeman on October 25, 2011 at 1:54 am
      • These houses are almost too beautiful, LL. I have idea after idea about photographing front porches, fences, gardens, gingerbread details, chimneys, even windows. I can't sleep at night for thinking of these homes! This morning I woke up thinking about the Dream House and wishing they had not used quite so much of the tall grasses for landscaping. I think it would be better with a little variety… some yarrow, cone flowers, or columbines would have made a better mix. It looks a bit “uniform” with all the same. In our community we have the clumps of grasses but interspersed with other vegetation and it looks more natural. Nonetheless, we went by the DH last night and they were photographing out in the front yard, still, at 4:45 p.m. Whatever HGTV does, it will be spectacular. I need to get down there again but will wait till the photography teams are out of there. I wouldn't want John Gidding to walk up to me and say “would you please move?” !!

        • I agree with your observations about the landscaping. I was thinking that HGTV might have been limited by HOA Landscaping codes…. I love wildflowers/color….I also wondered why some trees that provide seasonal color might not have been planted. (Perhaps not to disturb the views?) Do you have problems with mosquitoes in the tall grass?

    • Thanks, Beehive. Love all the colors and details! John Gidding posted another picture on FB.
He is sitting on the fence in the backyard ready for a neighborhood chat!

    • Glad I got these pictures yesterday because it was real cold last night and the trees dropped most of their leaves. The high country behind Midway and Park City has changed to gray from the beautiful reds and golds. HGTV picked the ideal time to be here for filming.

  4. Matt Blashaw stopped by the Dream Home in Utah on his way to do some filming for "Curb Appeal".
It looks like the DH is buzzing with HGTV and DIY personalities. Matt is helping with the construction

beehivestate on October 25, 2011 at 9:04 pm
        • Hi Beehivestate Soney and Alice here. We saw that and whenever we see a thumbs-down we always change it to thumbs-up. That happens to us and some others on this blog. The one that is doing it is one unhappy person, just like my neighbor. Because she is so unhappy she wants to make others unhappy. Our beautiful blogging friends always change it to thumbs-up so don't pay it no mind. DBCoop gave us the best advice, ignore them, they just want a reaction because it fuels their fire. It has worked like a charm for my neighbor and here on this blog. Soney and I are about to post a beautiful song on the piano about leaves in the wind. Everyone knows you are the bestest and we all love you! <3<3

alicesoneysmom on October 25, 2011 at 9:49 pm
          • Thank you, Alice, that is very good advice. I give only thumbs up or nothing! I just heard from our daughter-in-law and she tried to get tickets for us but wasn't successful either. Guess it's not our year.

          • Alice, here's the story of Sunny Kobe Cook. One thing I remember her saying was it was fortunate in the beginning she could not afford a big-name celebrity to promote her business because she learned to do it herself and not rely on anybody else. She said she was pretty bad on TV at first but she hired someone to help her and she got better. http://www.careerwomaninc.com/sunny_kobe_cook_qa….

You might want to google her by name, there are many interesting stories. My sister owned a party rental store in Wenatchee and she was so inspired by Sunny Kobe Cook, that was back in the day.

  12. DAILY BUZZ. MIDWAY. RIVER MEADOWS RANCH. 10/26/11. Thanks to Wyoming Girl's early-morning buzz, I was able to get by the Dream Home today and see the action. Here are some pictures I took this morning and afternoon, we stopped again on the way home. One pix is out of focus but I wanted you to see how close Deer Creek Reservoir is to us. I didn't take time to "mess" with the pictures before uploading to flickr, so I hope they show okay. Notice the little catering truck in front. It's always there on days they are filming. I also think we can see John standing in the front driveway. Hi John! http://www.flickr.com/photos/67137540@N05/sets/72

      • Hey Wyomie, those cars are parked right on the street in front of the house, directly. Did you see the little luncheon cantina? Today I went out to photograph barns in Charleston and came home by River Road and the house is only watched by the security guard car. It looks very peaceful all by itself in the sunshine. I took one picture and tonight after 4 when the light is better, I'll go walk down by the river and get some views of the back yard for us.

Loved everyone but wanted to ask you where were the flower pictures taken were they in the yard of the DH or are they wildflowers? Just wanted to thank you so so much. Haven't felt the best today so your pictures brighten our day. We keep going back for another look. BTW how is Puyallup doing? It not an easy time for her hope she is doing well. You should have gone up to the catering truck telling them you were an HGTV blogging photographer and then ordered the special of the day.

alicesoneysmom on October 27, 2011 at 7:39 pm
      • Alice, I hope you are feeling better soon. The sunflowers are right on River Road at the entrance to the upper road to the rest of River Meadows Ranch and the red flowers are right on the berm by the paved bike path which is skirting the development. I wanted to capture them before they are gone, we expect a hard frost this week. Today the yard service cut down my cone flowers that I had in my front garden and I miss them, even if they were dried out they were pretty. Oh well, I have pictures. Puyallup is doing fine. She's really a trooper, thinking only of what she can do for others by making quilts for the cancer center. She hasn't had nausea at all so far but she's only had two cycles of her tx. Thanks for asking. I wish I were more adventurous, I would have more stories for the blog but, really, it's more my nature to stay in the background and just look. The house is so lovely. I looked at my calendar and counted that HGTV “celebrities” (Linda, Jack, John, Monica, etc.) were at the house filming and arranging furnishings for 22 days in all. In the picture I took today I can see the rocking chairs on the game room porch. I do want to go for a closer look at those, now that all the trucks are gone away. And I'd like to go see the back, maybe this weekend my DH will go with me and we'll hike down there. This week I've been photographing Heber Valley Barns, Homes & Land for a collection. When I have it “good enough” and when we have nothing else going on the blog, I'll post a link. It really is so gorgeous out here! Even the simplest things interest me through the lens of my camera. I encourage you to get your camera out and see what happens. I'd love to see what you do with your flowers and where you go on some of your field trips. I had my Nikon Coolpix for nearly 3 years and I just this year started using it because of my desire to share Midway with the blog. You all have done me a favor by asking asking asking for pictures! I finally had to give up on the excuses!

  15. Wanted to drop in and post a few words from the Kingdom of Siam. The weather couldn't be more perfect, and what's more, the rains have more or less gone away. Still, Bangkok will be facing serious flood risk the next several days with high tides slowing the outflow of water downstream into the gulf. Agricultural goods, which come mainly from the flooded Northern provinces through Bangkok and down to Phuket are becoming more difficult to come by, as is bottled water. Everyone is hoping that Bangkok will be spared the worst of the flooding and that the dikes protecting so many areas of the city, as well as the main international airport, will withstand the test of record-breaking high waters.

Aside from some food shortages, Phuket is fine with no problems from flooding at all. I'm hoping that the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok will be operational for my return flight home in November, but I'm fairly certain that the waters will have receded to more normal levels by then.

Other than pool time around my home and a walk along the oceanfront, I have yet to spend any serious beach time, so perhaps I'll remedy that with some fun and sun tomorrow. Today was spent with American friends who live here full time, and we had a pleasant time shopping at the main mall in Patong and an inexpensive but delicious Thai food lunch at the food court. Dinner was a home-cooked meal spent on the hillside balcony overlooking the ocean with dozens of squid fishing boats lining the horizon accompanied by distant flashes of lightning, and some classic Rod Stewart on the stereo.

Okay, so much for life in Thailand. The really vital stuff is going on at the Midway Dream Home, with camera crews and celebrities galore, including our very own spy-in-the-sky, beehivestate. We all look forward to the news and views from our on-the-scene reporter as well as the inside story from blog-meister Mary. Ready when you are!

    • Again….Beehive…. you have a great "eye"…. The camera only records what you see and your "eyes" see beauty and character in so much of your world. This is the gift you share with us.

I love this home. Since I could not get my mom to move there, I would keep it as a retreat for my family. Most of my grandkids love to fish. So do their parents. I love cold weather. Summers are so hot here, we usually escape to the East or West coasts for long vacations. Most of my grandkids are athletic, and have a high interest winter sports and recreation. I have varied interests. And of course, I am a southern cook who has eclectic tastes–Creole, Southern, Mexican, and Soul Food.

(the animal from AZ)… it's a wild pig with big big fangs… we were at Cabela's today and they had one taxidermy-ed and I thought "perfect pet for Leroy". • It's just that prairie grass. That's what bothers me. Right now, I'm suffering from allergies/hay fever. I'm wondering if the high grasses mean more intense bouts with allergies, rodents, and snakes.

On the other hand, I wish I could be there for Thanksgiving. I usually start cooking a week ahead, and the night before, the kitchen and family room are buzzing with family, food preparation, and funny stories. I always invite family and guests. I would love to have your family as our guests. And just in case one of my sisters or inlaws wanted to spend Thanksgiving at the DH the next year, you and your family would be welcome to come here to my hometown, lodge, and celebrate with us .

granintx on October 27, 2011 at 5:34 pm
      • OMG, that would be so much fun, to celebrate Thanksgiving at the Dream Home with you! My son and his wife have her folks come out from Stowe Vermont. It would be a houseful and I love that!

      • Hi again, granintx, I forgot to comment about the grasses and the allergy situation. I don't see rodents and snakes around anywhere and I've been on that property many times but there are occasionally prairie dog burrows (I guess they are rodents). My DH has allergies and they are no worse here than they were when we lived in the damp climate of Tacoma WA. It's dry here, maybe that would help you. Also, remember it's 5700' elevation, it might make a difference because some people aren't as allergic as the elevation gains. Good luck! I'm glad you like the photos, I have a blast and it's twice as much fun b/c I can share them with the bloggers.

      Wyo_Girl on October 29, 2011 at 10:39 am
      • I think the paper is to keep us from looking in, remember they had the windows covered at the Stapleton home? I completely understand why they would do it b/c people like me would be up there, if they could, looking! Hey, was your DH happy about out outcome of last night's game? I was for Texas but it was a good series, all in all. No more baseball for 6 months, I'll be in withdrawal.

My hubby can't believe his shouting didn't wake me up! I'm thinking about getting him a Cardinals World Championship shirt for Christmas. Shhh — don't tell!

Like all the rest of us, RR has "aged" somewhat… all that time in the sunshine isn't kind… but he's still a good-looking, great guy and does so much for the community.

granintx on October 28, 2011 at 7:00 pm
    • I think one of the main problems with the high ceilings, stone walls, and wood floors, at least to me, is echo. I'm sure they will mitigate this by filling the room with "soft" furnishings.

beehivestate on October 29, 2011 at 12:33 am
      • I agree. When they get those big, pretty rugs down on the beaUTiful floors and furniture, it won't be so echoey. Is that even a word? I don't know, but it sounded good at the time!! :p

Is the new Wal-Mart in Park City? Do they have the grocery side in it also or just the regular stuff?

I would think the Midway grocery store would suffer with the WalMart opening up if it had the groceries also.

BrendainKs on October 29, 2011 at 2:08 pm
        • We have the new Walmart in Heber (5 miles) and it has everything. The one in Park City has been there awhile, is a little bigger than the Heber store. Yes, it will hurt the other grocers but I do 90% of the shopping and I always shop at The Store in Midway.

beehivestate on October 29, 2011 at 7:01 pm
      • You would be surprised at how easily that echo disapears BHS. I actually like that sound for some strange reason but, once all the furniture, curtains, wall art and lots of other fabric & stuff is in…… it's usually gone before ya' know it..

For me, the main issue would be the "heating cost". The circulation of air will work for or against the winner. You don't really know how good or bad it is until after a long, cold winter. You would need all the ceiling fans blowing downward to keep all the warm air from laying around the top of the rooms. I'm sure thay have thought all that out but…… I still think the cost to heat or cool a home that siize will be quite substancial.

Beehivestate – How cold does it get & how long are your winters? You would know more than anyone what the cost of heating would be in the area.

StellaF on November 4, 2011 at 4:27 pm
        • Hey Stella, I have a small two-story home, about 1750 sq. ft. and when we had it built we upgraded to the most efficient possible furnace AND had extra insulation put in. Our electric bill is always amazing to me, being it is so low! The DH will have all the latest and I betcha it won't be a big heating bill for the natural gas heating and cooling. We don't even run our air/or furnace all year round. In fact, the one problem we have with our home is the heat goes upstairs and it gets too warm up there.

beehivestate on November 4, 2011 at 5:55 pm
    • Hi! I was just reviewing the architecture of the DH and looked at the special techniques used for roof design and insulation and the venting system to improve the quality of temperature and moisture control. So it has been addressed
That has to affect utility bills.
Then they have 3 heating units installed in a crawl space to accommodate the huge size of the home. That has to affect utility bills.
Looks like they have a good, sound heating/air-conditioning system to control the temperature with minimum cost ; but the size of the home requires …a lot? Unless you can seal off part of the DH when in residence. Eg. Block off the kids wing and save on electric there.
Hope this is not too much info…I looked up all the architectural terms as I went through the design for myself earlier and took in a headful of facts. Whew!!

  27. I w as born and raised in the Heber Valley, moved away, and, then, moved back to raise my family. It is a stunningly beautiful place and I have been so thrilled to watch the dream house being built just a stones throw from where I live. From a native's point of view, I hope that they are using local vendors and craftsmen in the construction and decoration of the house (and, as you've seen in the comments, Park City doesn't count as "local"). As with any location, there are certain aspects of the environment and culture that can only be expressed by those most familiar with it.

The old canoe in a field, an iron blue bed frame, and lots of silver patina on wood…the textures and light in these shots are great ! May I be your agent ? You should be exhibiting these photos in a Midway gallery, seriously ! With a German and Swiss settlement influence of the past, are there any stone buildings around there? I love those too, along with all those pretty wooden Victorians. thank you for sharing these.

LLColeman on October 29, 2011 at 3:07 am
      • Hi LL, the stone buildings are plentiful but they are of the “pot rock” variety, as that is the native stone. There are many old homes, many! And some are rebuilt and some are falling down. Every day is an adventure. When I saw that old canoe in the field, I was so surprised. And yesterday was the first time I saw that crater by the side of the road across from Zermatt. Every day, something new, if you look.

I like the lines and angles of the old buildings, old farm equipment, light and shadow, and the fact that when the picture is on the computer, I see things that “weren't there” in the viewfinder. And my DH likes to look at them with me and help me decide which to edit out and which to keep, how to crop the pictures, and all the possibilities. I loved it when I found that red CB barn! Right in the middle of town. I think they raise sheep. I'm going back and look. As I was driving around photographing, a young girl of 12 or 13 was riding her bike around and I saw her two or three different streets and she waved and smiled at me. It was heart-warming.

  32. Mwahahaha, beware the ghosts and ghouls of Halloween night, for regardless of where you travel, no matter where you try to hide, the spirits of those haunting souls will jump out from the shadows to scare the wits out of you! Even in Thailand. Actually, more so in Bangkok than anywhere else in the country, especially in and around the Western hotels, clubs and bars, and tourist areas like Patong or Kamala on Phuket Island. Rural villagers, even most Thai in the cities, have no real idea of what Halloween means, but as mainly Buddhists, they do have strong beliefs about the souls of the departed, both good and evil, and many homes and businesses have "spirit houses" dedicated to ancestors and special religious figures. So a night dedicated to the more frightening spirits is not unusual for them, and many will participate with the vigor of Western party-goers.

Other than Halloween, one festival that the Thai devote much time and money to is Loi Krathong. The celebration lasts for several days, especially in Northern Thailand. I was in the North (Chiang Mai) last November for Loi Krathong, and it was a spectacular sight.

As the full moon of the twelfth lunar month (usually in mid-November) lights up the night sky, throughout the Thai kingdom, hundreds of thousands of candle-lit, ornately-decorated, flowered krathong or traditional banana leaf floats are set adrift in rivers and waterways in a spell-binding ritual called Loi Krathong — the 'festival of lights". This is one of the Kingdom's oldest and best-preserved traditions.

Some believe that by setting the krathong adrift, one symbolically casts away one's grief, misery and ill-fortunes by placing tufts of hair or clipped finger-nail into the krathong in the hope of ridding themselves of a spell of bad luck or misfortune. Coins are also placed in the krathong as offerings.

For the romantic at heart and young couples, Loi Krathong is the time to make wishes for happiness together and success in love.

At dusk, as the full moon begins to rise, the krathong is decorated with fresh flowers and the candles and incense sticks are placed in the krathong. The float is then taken to a waterway where the candle and incense sticks are lit and the krathong set adrift. The floats are carried downstream by the gentle current, with many thousands of candlelights flickering in the wind.

The lighting of fireworks is undertaken in the same spirit as when lighting candles in an act of worship so fireworks displays are very much an integral element of the secular and religious rituals performed.

Soon after, attention turns to celebration. The evening's festivities consist of impressive firework displays, folk entertainment, stage dramas, song and dance. Scenes as described in ancient Thai literary accounts are still very much in existence today.

Loi Krathong customs and traditions reflect local beliefs and cultural evolution. Interesting regional variations can be seen. In Tak province, the banana-leaf floats are replaced by coconut shells which are threaded together and launched simultaneously so they appear as long chains of hundreds of glittering lights on the Ping River, hence the origin of its name, Loi Krathong Sai.

Again, more in the North, as part of Loi Krathong, the Lantern Festival is also celebrated at the same time as the floating candlelit krathong. Tubular lanterns, resembling hot air balloons, are lit and released into the night sky by the thousands as an offering to the Lord Buddha. As a continuous stream of illuminated lanterns drift into infinity, this conjures the same sense of wistful closure as the krathong float downstream.

Since I'll still be in Thailand during Loi Krathong this year, I'm looking forward to seeing how the festival is celebrated here on Phuket Island in Southern Thailand. Luckily, I'll be able to enjoy the sights and sounds of fireworks, hot-air lanterns and even some of the candlelit loi krathong from my front row balcony seat over the Andaman Sea. Sawasdee krup!

And, sure to be another big question, will the Dream Home be decorated, and perhaps even haunted, for Halloween? May all the spirits be friendly.

    More Than Midway to Paradise!

Phuket? Is that where the floating city is as well? I just don't remember. It was a super colosal

You're right, SandyLA, Ko (Koh) Ping-gan, otherwise better known as James Bond Island (where part of the movie "The Man With The Golden Gun" was filmed) is in Phang Nga Bay, off of the northeast coast of Phuket.

Another island, Ko Panyee, is home to the Sea Gypsies, who live in a remarkable floating village built out over water entirely on stilts with a massive rock monolith as an impressive backdrop.

There are numerous islands in the area with sheer limestone cliffs that rise majestically out of the emerald green waters. Some of the islands have caves that can be explored by boat, but watch out for the bats! Monkeys also live on some of the islands. They eat crabs as well as any bananas that they are offered or can grab from unsuspecting tourists! I was told that the monkeys can swim from one island to another, and they certainly have no problem swimming out to the kayaks for those sweet banana offerings.

Speaking of offerings, I wonder if Mary will be teasing us with a few interior photos of the Dream Home come Monday or Tuesday? Of course, many bloggers and dreamers everywhere are still anxiously waiting for the big news about the DIY Blog Cabin 2011 winner as well.

        More Than Midway To Paradise!

        • I also hope that after the winner of the BlogCabin is announced, we will have a peek of a newroom every week.  That will keep us busy for a very long time.

  33. The black paper on the Dream Home windows must be hiding all the artwork purchased for the Dream Home! Linda Woodrum and others have been "busy bees" collecting art and filming local artists.
Monica Pedersen interviewed local artist Robert Duncan as early as September and Julie
Nester Gallery reports that they sold a number of pieces from several of their featured artists.
You can enlarge the photographs by clicking on a photo.

    • Robert Duncan's gallery is in Midway. The interview with Monica Pedersen is taking place at Swiss Days in Midway on September 3rd or 4th. From the get-go, I had high hopes that his work would be in the DH. He's well-known all over the world. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtZ5PPF-Qvo

Julie Nester's gallery is in Park City. I don't know any of her artists.

Again, DeerSpring, thanks. If I could, I would give you about 10 "thumbs up" for making this a great day for me!

  34. I knew you would be happy to see the Robert Duncan interview at Swiss Days. I went to his site first
and then found out he had a FB page link. Julie Nester's Gallery has a variety of contemporary
artists. It will be interesting to see what was selected from the various exhibitions.

DeerSpring on October 30, 2011 at 2:44 pm
    • Very clever, why didn't I think of that? Probably b/c I rarely look at FB! I visualize a Robert Duncan painting over the fireplace or in the great room against a stone wall. I would love to own a framed print of his.

      • Oops, I meant to post my comment about how I found the link under the original posting.
Oh, well! Thank you, Bee. I think it's fun to imagine how art and furniture will be chosen and placed by Linda Woodrum and to imagine a few of your own personal touches, too!

          • I don't like Halloween!! I haven't liked it since I was four years old. Even at my age I don't like it. When the kids were younger, I drove them to close friends and relatives. The past years, I've let my son answer the door every year. I call my mom every year. When she hears the phone ring, she KNOWS who it is calling her. :) I make Manwiches every year on this day. It's a tradition that my mom started i suppose. It's quick and easy. You can put it in the crock pot and eat whenever you want to.

          • (This comment goes needs to be read after the "I don't like Halloween" comment. I don't know if it will post like that though. We will try it and see. )

BUT THIS YEAR…….I've decided to put my "BIG GIRL" hat on and be BRAVE and answer the door for those little trick or treaters. Mean vibes aren't going to come to me this year!!!

I have also decided to face my …..ummmmm…..what do you call it? When you "bury the hatchet" with someone. Tell them how you felt, and apologize if necessary for the wrong I've done to them in the past. A girl that stole my boyfriend that I'm still kind of mad about, ….that sort of thing. I am older now and I HAVE TO GROW UP!!! So I need to do that soon, or I will drive myself crazy.

          • Brenda, I love Halloween! When I came to get Larsie this morning, he was in costume as a little lion. We've had at least 60 kids here tonight, my DH had to go out for more candy b/c last year we barely had 20. They are still coming and it's 8:30. I'm almost out of candy again so I'll turn out the lights and blow out the candle in the pumpkin.

beehivestate on October 31, 2011 at 10:25 pm
          • Last night, I was all ready for those little munchkins and only two kids showed up at my house. Since I got my big girl panties on, I was a little upset because there weren't any more than that.

Maybe next year, I will be more brave and get a pumpkin and decorate my house. We will have to see when that time comes! :) Have a GREAT day!

By the way, I am sure Lars looked super cute in his lion costume! You should post some pictures of him in his costume. You did take pictures didn't you? lol Oh, silly me! Of course you did!! :)

          • Happy Halloween to you, too! Beehive, I understand. No "gamey" game rooms,
no bears in the den, and no moose in the hoose….does that pretty well cover the
            taxidermy request???

DeerSpring on October 31, 2011 at 5:30 pm

    • I'll sleep well tonight knowing that my house has some of the features needed to ward off a herd of
zombies, CplusE!! Very funny!! Happy Halloween!

DeerSpring on October 31, 2011 at 8:15 am
    • Happy Hallows Eve, C+E–and thanks for posting that hilarious zombie safety guide… those pointers remind me of how well the VA Blog Cabin was renovated–quite zombie-proof materials, and a generator as a bonus.
The generous expanses of glass in the Midway D.H. should withstand any zombie attack, and it is good to know the main living area has the stone work as reinforcement. With a well-stocked kitchen, victims can wait out a zombie incursion until the zombies wander off and fall into the river….

  38. MIDWAY HALLOWEEN FRIGHT

Dream Home bloggers of every age,
Halloween's time for all things strange

Come along and you will see
    In Midway now it's Halloween

This is Halloween, everybody make a scene
Trick or treat till the dead of night

    It's our town, everybody scream
    In this town at Halloween

Who's the one under your bed
Teeth ground sharp and eyes glowing red

Ghostly soul hiding under the stairs
Fingers like snakes and spidery hairs

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
    Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!

Right here where the Dream Home's seen
Everyone hail to the pumpkin king.

In Midway, big heart, small size
Everybody's waiting for the next surprise!

    Round the corner, heartbeats announce
    Something's waiting now to pounce.

    We all scream! It's Halloween
Red 'n' black, and slimy green.

    Aren't you scared? It's such a fright
Eerie moon in the dead of night.

Say it once, shout it twice
Take a chance and roll the dice!

    Everybody scream, everybody scream
    In Midway it's Halloween!

There's the clown with the scary face
Here in a flash — gone without a trace.

Who's the "who" when you call, "Who's there?"
Is it just the wind blowing through your hair?

Creepy shadow on the moon at night
Filling your dreams to the brim with fright

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
    Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!

    Ghoulish spirits everywhere
Life's no fun without a good scare.

That's their job, but they're not mean
    In Midway on Halloween.

But home alone tonight's not wise
For creatures walk in dark disguise.

    Skeleton rattles in the wind
Makes you jump right outta' your skin.

    This is Halloween, everybody scream
It's nothing like we've ever seen!

When you hear haunted voices sing
Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King!

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
    Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!

Wherever you hide just sing along
Everyone hail to the pumpkin song.

But I'm not scared, so ha ha ha
There's no Dream Home ghosts — least not so far!

  39. First, I want to mention the snowstorm the norteast had. Hope all of our friends and buddies
are all OK and also no big trees down at your abode. Second, Beehivestate, I am confused
(a normal state, I know), is the house only built on one of the lots (#5-#6). If so, what is on the
other lot? I heard and read that something else was being built but never saw anything finished.
I was hoping for a big barn or something like that. You have not showed anything like that, but
you were the one talking about the other building I think!:S

SandyLA on October 31, 2011 at 5:53 pm
    • Well, the other building phenomena was just that–a "pie in the sky" wish. The house is built in the center of lots 5-6, aka "lot 5A" according to the builder. Plenty of room all around, not close to neighbors, nice 2.45 acres.

beehivestate on October 31, 2011 at 10:16 pm
    • The snow storm came quick & furious. It stayed long enough to destroy all my Zenia's & Dalia's which were all blooming strong. It's extremely strange to wake up and be "snow covered" in October. Lots of minor damage to small shrubs, tress & flowers but thankfully, nothing like the last 2 storms. The 1st one tore our deck off the house so, the weight of it had to be torn down because it was pulling at the back of our house. The 2nd one took out our largest pine tree and layed it in one of our neighbors yards. Cost nearly $500 to have it hauled away.

Ya' know I'm not much for all the snow but….. I do love this location and DH. As long as they install a nice "jacuzzi" I'll be fine. I can soak my ol' achy bones when the bad weather comes. The home is so big, I would feel like I was going somewhere just going from one end to the next. Lots of pantry items, water, ect and I would HIBERNATE!

StellaF on November 1, 2011 at 12:25 pm
      • You will have that outdoor hot tub, for sure, and plenty of pantry space for food storage. Not to worry!

      • Stella, you chose such a great word for the house,a hibernation destination! I like that idea and can feel the bones in the tub!So sorry to hear about your loss.  I was happy to hear that everyone was fine. We are having a littlerain today, so exciting. Will you be waiting until the end of winter to clean up or will you have toget to it soon?  Wishing you warm good luck!

  41. Hi Bee what is the temperature like there in the Fall?

Angelways on November 1, 2011 at 5:37 pm
    • It's been a beautiful fall this year, Angel. In September we had many days in the 70's and 80's and just this month of October we've been in the 60's and some 70's. And sunny every day. To me, the summer seems long and just today it is rainy and cool but even now, this afternoon, the sun is out, leaves are swirling about, and it is 43 degrees. I didn't turn on the furnace until about two weeks ago and brought out the flannel quilt because the nights have been cool. We've had one or two hard frosts. That's all. We may be will have snow before Thanksgiving but not every year. By December (late fall) we will surely have some snow on the ground but it may not last. People are just now getting out their warm coats and hats.

      • My favorite was the story of "infant," the baby born premature (7 months) and kept alive in the winter time. And lived to be 97 years old. Think of that, and it was in the 1870's! They wrapped the infant in cotton wool and made a fire of green wood to keep the baby warm.

I also liked the story of how the children only went to school 4 months a year and had to walk.

beehivestate on November 3, 2011 at 3:43 pm

I've been spending so much time on this blog that I actually forgot to pay my house payment on my personal little dream house on the 1st and fortunately, discovered that today so I could get with the program!

Take pictures of everything he does. That way you have proof!!! And he can keep those photos for the rest of his life!! :) Date them and write who is in the photos with you. He will cherish them!!! I wish I would have done that for my kids.

          • Well, he's not even 15 months yet and he can climb a step ladder, jump off to Gramma, chase the dog, throw the football, almost feed himself… very coordinated. He's even learning baby sign language. The cutest one is for “all done,” which is put your hands out like to the side like an “L” and wiggle your fingers like “pick me up.” He did that to me yesterday in the cart at the grocery. Very cute but takes energy to follow him around.

          • That's how you stay active and so young!! Chasing after grandbabies! My oldest daughter is 25 and doesn't want kids. Go figure.

          • well, everything is subject to change and change can happen quickly… our son and his wife were 34 when they married and almost 36 when the baby came along. Don't give up hope!

          • Lars might remember some things…my grandkids got into an academic preschool at age 2…they were very social and curious, and got too bored without other kids to play with and they needed lots of activities.(..so they ended up with memories of preschool teachers instead !)

          • I'm sure he will do something like that, too. We'll be taking him for hikes and he'll be very much into the outdoor sports and things, so I'm staying in shape!

        • LL, you are so up for "sainthood," 11 hours a day?! Wow! Never again will I complain about my measley 30 hours a week! Anyhow, Larson is very cute, something new and fun every day, very curious. Just getting interested in sitting down with a storybook for about 2 minutes!

          • bee, my daughter-in- law had to return to work when her firstborn was 3 mos, old. It took her 45 min. to commute to work, and longer to get home. She sometimes stayed late at her job or had appt. after work. Believe me, once his baby sis came along 13 mos. later, I needed help taking care of the two ! My younger son had night courses at college, so he went to help me babysit during the day… grand daughter was born with acid reflux and she had difficulty with taking naps, poor little thing–so the extra help with bottles , feeding etc,. meant each child got lots of attention & love. <3

          • I admire you, it's alot, even thought you want to help. I'm sure Larson will have a sibling eventually. My DH and I say “what will we do then?” but I know we will step up to whatever's needed.

    • alice, I will be thinking about you on Veterans' Day, along with others I know–you have been very dear to us bloggers, and shared many of your experiences with us. I am glad you are feeling better and had a bit of sunshine return.

    • Bee, I think this was posted by Alice earlier. I love the concept of windows like art frames. I hoped
you would have a winter wonderland today, but a light dusting is enough to remind us of what's to
come. I found this little video, "UFO in Park City?", which reminded me of last year's filming at
Stowe when they attached a camera to balloons inside the DH. Check it out. They must have
used this to do their filming in Park City. I wonder if they used this at the DH in Midway to get
      some aerial shots.

        • Can you imagine that remote control object hovering over your home? I guess you have to
be creative in the photography business to get those unique and more difficult shots.

    • Thanks for reposting this, as I apparently missed it when Alice posted it before. From the looks of the house, Pella was VERY busy with the windows!
