HGTV Dream Home: A Patchwork Quilt

I’ve been working on content for HGTVPro.com’s Building of HGTV Dream Home 2012 package, now slated to launch in mid September, and I’m loving this quote shared by our builder Bo Holland during one of our recent conversations. I think it so perfectly describes the process of building this spectacular ranch-style home.

“There’s a phrase we often use in construction when something seems a bit challenging or difficult, and we call it ‘cut up’. This home is ‘cut up’. It has a whole bunch of shapes that seem to collide together, angles and geometric challenges that occur. It’s a little bit like a patchwork quilt. You’ve got all these pieces that you are trying to fit together and you aren’t quite sure how it’s going to come out until the end. It’s a very warm, inviting sort of home.”

Today’s collection of photos showcase crib framing, which I touched on earlier, as well as the home’s trussing and unique roofing systems. I’ll be sharing more information in September. Keep checking in for details.

Crib Framing

Hi all,

I thought I’d pop in today to share an interesting detail about the HGTV Dream Home 2012 exterior. Each portion of the home will be identified by its own unique exterior cladding. And I have it on pretty good authority that the game room wing will be clad in crib framing. I can’t wait to see this treatment.

I hope you enjoy today’s photo, pulled from our construction site camera.

Siting HGTV Dream Home 2012

I had the opportunity to chat with the 2012 architect Corey Solum yesterday. I was gathering information about the process of siting the home. I look forward to sharing the story in its entirety in mid-August when we launch the Building of HGTV Dream Home 2012 package on HGTVPro.com. Something he said made me smile: “Every lot has a good side, just like people do.” His job in siting the home included a close examination of the lot to determine its “good side”.

I share a photo that demonstrates just how successful he was. Enjoy!

What’s New at the Construction Site

Hi all,

Speaking of Green Details

The excitement generated by the HGTV Green Home winner announcement spurred me to jot down a quick post about the green features of next year’s HGTV Dream Home.

Although design details are still up in the air, the architect did mention in a recent call his hope and desire that locally sourced products including sandstone and reclaimed lumber be used in the home’s construction. Could salt-cured beams and planks from the Great Salt Lake trestle bridge form part of the home’s timber framing? What a story we would have to tell!

Stay tuned as we share more construction details in the weeks to come.

Finally, The 2012 Floor Plan

Thanks for your patience, all.

I am so happy to share our floor plan and rendering for HGTV Dream Home 2012. Please examine the illustrations and then drop some comments in this post. I will seek out the answers for you.

Enjoy! And while you’re at it, pop on over to the Urban Oasis blog to check out the latest news. Excitement is building as we draw closer to the online tour (August 1). A Q&A with HGTV’s own Vern Yip will launch early next week. Keep checking back for details! I think you will love this year’s apartment – like the architectural design of HGTV Green Home 2011, interior details are inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie style.

A Tidbit to Tide You Over

Happy Monday!

Good things come to those who wait, or so the saying goes. We are working on a slideshow that will highlight the final, approved floor plan and rendering. I should be able to post that photo feature within the next week or so.

Here’s an interesting fact about the home design that should intrigue you. Architect Corey Solum says that the home will be constructed to mimic the look of an old, original farmhouse that has been expanded out over the years. Expect to see a central, stone-faced structure and off-shoots clad in different materials.

New Time-Lapse Pics

Hi all,

I just added new photos to the construction time-lapse slideshow, so please take some time today to check it out. Can you imagine what the home might look like once it’s completed? Here’s a little tidbit: HGTV Dream Home 2012 will be all about the views. Patios, balconies and outdoor spaces will capitalize on the home’s location.

And when you have a free moment, please visit our Urban Oasis blog and share your small-space decorating secrets.
