Some of you have asked about the $100,000 we’re giving away during the HGTV Dream Home Live Giveaway Special on Sunday, March 18, starting at 9pm ET/6pm PT. Here’s how it will work.

Throughout the show, you’ll see amazing clips from the HGTV Dream Home in Winter Park, Colo. In some of these clips, secret clues will pop up on the screen. When you take all the clues together, they form a question about the Winter Park home. If you can answer the question correctly and are the first caller to the toll-free number provided, then you win $100,000!

Note: No purchase necessary. Must be a legal US resident, age 21 or older. Subject to official rules at HGTV.com.

Come back tomorrow when we’ll eliminate FIVE states from the running for HGTV Dream Home 2008! (And yes, Sharon, five states that have been mentioned frequently as possible locations.)

Here’s a clue that eliminates two states. Watch this video featuring a city that shares its name with a state, but is located in another state. And though many of you have made great arguments for both states, HGTV Dream Home 2008 is not going to be located in either one.

The fans for North Dakota and South Dakota are making some great arguments for bringing an HGTV Dream Home to their respective states.

“Why not try North Dakota? It is affordable and beautiful.”

“How about the sweeping views of the gorgeous Badlands of western North Dakota? Plenty of spectacular scenery, wildlife galore, great sunsets, clear blue skies. Come explore North Dakota and see what we have to offer!”

“How about the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, in the Northern hills near Spearfish, overlooking a lake?”

Great ideas, but the next home’s not coming to either state. Be sure to check back tomorrow for another clue to the location of HGTV Dream Home 2008. I’ll give you a hint: the clue involves something found in this room of the Winter Park home. (No, it’s not that mirror again!)

It’s probably no surprise that the idea of an HGTV Dream Home in Hawaii is inspiring many comments.

“My dream location would be on the big island of Hawaii, with a view of the ocean to one side and the Kilauea volcano to the other. You would be able to see whales migrating in the day and have the glow of Kilauea at night.”

“A beautiful view, perhaps looking out from one of the Hawaiian Islands.”

And for some, not just any Hawaiian island will do.

“Palm trees, blue oceans, great sunsets. Hawaii sounds good to me, but let it be on Maui rather than Oahu.”

Unfortunately, we’re not going to Hawaii for HGTV Dream Home 2008. But just because we’re not going to the islands this year, doesn’t mean you can’t bring some of the islands to your home.

We’re less than two weeks away from the big moment when we find out who wins the HGTV Dream Home in Winter Park, Colo., during a LIVE television special. Plus, we’ll be giving away $100,000 to a viewer during the show! (And no, you don’t win the cash by correctly guessing the location of the next house. Just watch the show to find out how to get a chance to win.)

And so far, we’ve eliminated the following states: Colorado, Tennessee (and yes, that includes in and around Chattanooga), Ohio, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Kentucky. Also, HGTV Dream Home 2008 will definitely be in the United States, despite many votes for Puerto Rico and at least one for Venice, Italy.

Among the remaining 44 states, my totally unscientific poll of the comments so far shows a few states emerging as favorites. Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas (thanks, Scrabble board), Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, New Mexico and Texas are mentioned frequently. All lovely places to build an HGTV Dream Home, but there can be only one. Come back tomorrow and we’ll eliminate one of the states on the list above. And later this week, another clue to the location of HGTV Dream Home 2008.

We’re seeing a lot of support for an HGTV Dream Home in the lush, rolling hills of the Bluegrass State.

“Forget the water! Kentucky has some rolling hills and bluegrass to enjoy.”
“Kentucky, Barkley Lakes, with beautiful sunsets and best sailing in the Midwest.”
“The beautiful clear Lake Cumberland in Somerset, Kentucky, would make a wonderful place for the 2008 dream home. You could have all the beauty of mountains, trees, water and the all the bluegrass you could ever want.”

We’ll certainly keep these and other locations in mind for future sites, but the HGTV Dream Home 2008 is not going to have a Kentucky address.

It looks like an HGTV Dream Home with a mountain view is always a fan favorite. And there are lots of calls for the mountains or lakes of the Volunteer State, or just across the border in North Carolina.

“If you’ve ever experienced ‘Rocky Top,’ you would understand why Tennessee is where the next Dream Home should be. The vistas are similar to Colorado, yet mysteriously different.”
“I think it will be near La Follette, Tenn., on Norris Lake. If my guess is right it would be my dream location.”
“I think it should be in Tennessee around the Smoky Mountains. We have lots of lakes around here to fish.”
“I think the next dream home will be in Gatlinburg, Tenn.”
“My favorite view is of the mountains, I only hope it can be somewhere in the North Carolina mountains.”

We’ve already said the next HGTV Dream Home isn’t being built in Chattanooga, but I’ll go ahead and extend that and say it’s not going to be anywhere in Tennessee. As for North Carolina, we were just there with the 10th anniversary HGTV Dream Home in Lake Lure. Beautiful place, great house, wonderful location, but we’re not going back to the mountains of North Carolina for 2008.

Have you seen the incredible bunkroom on the first floor of the Winter Park home? Designer Linda Woodrum has filled it with interesting furniture and accessories, including a comical stuffed moose head. Don’t worry, it’s a plush toy. No actual moose were harmed in the making of HGTV Dream Home 2007.
