You Choose the Color!
Hello!
I know updates have been slow coming, but here’s some exciting news: you get to tell us what color to paint the first HGTV Green Home! Starting this Friday, we’ll have a poll up with three options for exterior color schemes and you can vote for your favorite.
In other news, our cohorts over at HGTV Pro have just launched their new feature, Building the 2008 HGTV Green Home. And they’ve already got the first photos from the job site in South Carolina!
And yes, that’s right, HGTV Green Home 2008 is being built in South Carolina. I know there’s been just a bit of confusion in the comments. We’ll have more information soon about the exact location. And starting in late March of 2008, you’ll be able to enter for a chance to win the home!

Where are the three options posted? Haven’t found them.
Many colors are wonderful and blend well – from tropical colors to pastel relaxing colors. South Carolina is traditional and historic.
Personally, if I chose one combo, it would be dark blue and white. Charleson was famous for their indigo trade and blue dye. Contrast with a true bright white, the nautical theme is great.
Complement it with a taupe/sandy tan to reflect the sea oats tan.
Add splashes of color with a deep burgandy red for highlights or deep moss green to remember the spanish moss.
Navy, true white, and tan as main colors carried through the home. Lots of white – beadboard, board and batten, plantation shutters. Lots of windows with transoms for light.
Splashes of burgandy or moss in accents.
I believe it should be the color of its sorroundings like it was never built. like its a part of the trees and colors of the ground surrounding it. when you look at it should be as though your looking through it to see whats behind it…..thank and is it a raffle and when would like to be updated. bill
I am trying to go green I made my own shopping bags and try to teach my kids how to limit there foot prints on the earth. I can’t wait to see all the details to this green home and I hope it inspires more to go green! I really Like natural woods, or natural colors, blues, greens, browns, I think you should make a statement with out making it look out of place!
I can’t help posting about this home. I’m so excited about the concept. I think the interior should also be nice neutral tones: mossy greens, pale blues, clay, cream…reflective of natural colors that will make you feel like you’re part of the surrounding area. I’m also imagining sky lights and lots of natural light to capitalize on the environment and beautiful woodworks within the home. Whatever is decided, I’m sure this will be the best HGTV design yet. Get Candice Olsen and David Bromstad involved. Their shows ALWAYS have breath taking results.
I think the color should reflect place the house sit in , may be some stone work with a earthy brown or natural color of the wood.
Have made a lifelong effort to ‘do my part’ in recycling, reusing and not abusing. There are so many great ideas and ingenious inventions out there for us to use. I concur with others choosing green (subtle) and white trim would be a great choice for exterior and interior with lots of natural wood tones indoors.
Can’t wait to see more.
HGTV AND SPONSERS YOU ROCK. IT’S SO IMPORTANT TO KEEP OUR PLANET GREEN.AS FAR AS COLORS, ANYTHING FOUND IN NATURE,TO ENHANCE ITS NATURE BASED IDEA.NO INDUSTIAL TONES,GREY AND COLD. I’M SO LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING IT,IN ALL ITS NATURAL GLORY.THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR REMEMBERING WHATS TRULY IMPORTANT,OUR FAMILIES NEED MORE DOWN TO EARTH IDEAS THESE DAYS,LIKE GETTING BACK TO BASICS,THAT INCLUDES ENJOYING OUR SURROUNDINGS IN AND MAKING THE MOST OUT OF WHAT THIS PLANET HAS TO OFFER.THE GREEN HOUSE IS A FANTASTIC IDEA, I ONLY HOPE THE WINNER WILL REALIZE JUST HOW SPECIAL IT WILL BE,AND I KNOW IT WILL BE WITH ALL THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE INVOLVED IN MAKING IT A REALITY. BRAVO HGTV!!! THANKS FOR LISTENING.
I guess I missed it somewhere – what color did they decide on eventually? Looking forward to updated info real soon.
I’m sorry but this is the very first time I sent in a entry to any of your blogs
I agree with light tan with accents of burgundy or dark brown. Also, brick or stone could be used. Gold could also be used for accents in accessories and lighting for this color scheme.
I suggest any of these designers for this: Candace Olson, David Bromstad, and Angelo Surmelis.
I like the ocean colors for the trim, shades of blue and coral would be great, and softer more earthy shades for the body such as sand and shell. But I’m sure whatever it is will be wonderful.
The color(s) of the home should blend in with the beautiful surroundings. A base color of muted green : olive to sage with cream or bone trim and accents of burnt umber or rust. The greens and browns would set the feel of the home in the surrounding woods and the lighter trim sets the outline of the home.
Inside warm earth tones from green, yellow and red to keep the relaxed outdoors feeling
I would like to see the exterior body color to be white and the trim to be dark green. Thank you for asking!
I think an earth tone or pale green color would be a good choice for the HGTV Green Home
I have wanted to go green. This sounds like a wonderful home I would love to live in. Bringing the out doors in would be wounderful. With fireplace in every room, solar energy, maybe a wind mill for energy since it is near the beach they have ones that blend right in now.
I am one of 11 siblings we did not have much growing up but lots of structure and love. I the third form the oldest helped mom with the others as Dad was not home much. I lost my Father the only gerandmother I ever knew a neice and my mother all with in a years time in 1971-72. My father and grandmother of heart failure my neice fron heart surgery at age 3 weeks and my mother murdered. I and my High School sweetheart married of course and when mom was murdered took on my 3 youngest brothers to help raise. It was a hard time and we just found out about our sons Autism and his is the more sever form no verbal language developed. I am the proud mother of a 38 soon to be 39 year on Jan. 7,2008 old son with Autism. My husband is a very hard worker and had a heartattack 2 years ago in Feb. He is better but diagnosed now with COPD causing some breathing trouble. He loves scuba diving and work on the robotics at his job where they make contact lenses. My self I have bulging disks in my neck and lower back making some activites painful; surgery suggested 8 years ago, but no not for me until I can’t take the pain anymore.
To win a home where we would no longer have to worrie about a place for our son to be cared for when something happens to one or both of us would be a merical from God.
I can’t waite to see the Green home on HGTV my favorite show
The green home would look great painted a rich seafoam green with cream trim. Such a beautiful home like this should stand out from the natural invironment, not get lost by painting it in woodsy earth tones.
A natural color would be beautiful if you use stone trim and lots of beautiful green landscaping and add color through floral plantings mostly as perennials. Cant remember if you gave a description of the materials you are using for the home construction on the outside. So if you would, for instance, be building a straw bale home, a natural cream or off white plaster would be nice. You should have a dramatic door for the entry. Maybe one that is salvaged from some interesting location. Homes need character. DB
Eco Friendly~~~ Yeah…I would suggest great earthy tones, greens, yellows, paprika along with browns of all tones…These are so serene and comforting to me. Also, I would like to see several levels of lighting in this home. Natural materials for furnishings would just be the greatest..thanks for all the great programming over the years. Please contine to “start at home”!
Any current picts? So far, the ones that were posted for us to choose a color for the exterior have disappeared and only the barest stage of construction are shown: backyard view of the lake, frame, and rough-in for plumbing and electrical wiring. Surely you’ve progressed past that stage by now. What color was finally chosen?
I agree with a previous note. The house should be a salmon pink with green trim or a pale coral with green trim. Anything but blue, it fades.
I think a pale yellow with green trim would be nice and I need a house.I am 45 and never owned my own so I will enter as often as you allow me to.It looks like a great place to raise mykids!
I think that the house should be a natural wood like cedar. What better way to have an ecofriendly home than to have it blend in with nature? No painted surface, just a sealer that lets the beauty of the wood show through. The trim can either be left natural or a beige or light brown.
I would like to see the house in a soft butter yellow with white trim. I think the colors need to reflect the mood of a light breezy summer day. I can’t wait to see the progression of this home.
First, Going Green should mean staying close and true to natural. I think any color with the least impact on the environment will be an A+. Second, thanks for showing us the process – it’s fun.
i think natural colors should be brought in since it is by the ocean. i think the outside should be a pale yellow with a olive green trim.and i would love to own a home in hilton head.we have never owned one of our own. god bless you all. kathy h
I LOVE ALMOST ALL SHADES OF GREEN, BUT OUT SIDE OF HOME I THINK NATURAL SHADE, but deeper trim.
Inside I think walls going from light to meduim greens shades through out the home, with deep rich shades in all accessorie’s.(THINK OF ALL THE SHADES OF OCEAN’S AND THE SEAS, AND THAT IS heaven’s beautie, just like your green homeis.)
Thank you at HGTV’Dream Home, FOR All each and every one of you, do to give such joy to all of us.
Susan Santoianni
Thanks for the HGTV Dream Home information. I think a light shade of green with a darker shade for the trim is what you want. A triditional color scheem that is proven again and again.
I think the clor should be in the green line, there are some many colors of greens, but any just as long it is in that line. The Carolians is a beautiful place, with all the beaches that is there plus all the golf crose.
I THINK A CEDAR SHINGLE SIDING PAINTED A NEUTRAL COLOR, LIKE TAN OR A LIGHT GRAY WOULD BE BEAUTIFUL. I ALWAYS LOVE THE CLASSIC BLACK OR WHITE SHUTTERS.
It will just be a blessing to be the winner of the first ever hgtv green home. I can’t tell you how excited I am!! I will continue to say my prayers, because I know someday they will be answered!!!
Guess what, I live 20 minutes from Traditions and I am a native of this area. I would like to see neutral colors, almonds, khaki, carmel, warm tones. Maybe re-use cedar form an old house, that’s common in this area. Just because the house is “Green” I don’t think the paint color has to be green.
I think HGTV is phonomenal for giving people the opportunities that they do. And to participate in choices will be such an added bonus. We all dream about winning an HGTV dream home and whoever wins will be one fortunate lucky devil! So, good luck to all and Thank you HGTV for your endless generosity.

I think you should go with shades of earthy tones or greens. Maybe sage or golds or tans. My husband and I would also Love to win this home. I lost my first husband to Cancer in 2006. He lost his wife in 2006. Wev’e only been married a few months. This new home would be a wonderful new start for us. God Bless each and every one. I pray he will keep everyone safe through the building of this home. Thanks for allowing us to be involved. I can’t wait to see how this progresses.
