You Choose the Color!

Hello!

I know updates have been slow coming, but here’s some exciting news: you get to tell us what color to paint the first HGTV Green Home! Starting this Friday, we’ll have a poll up with three options for exterior color schemes and you can vote for your favorite.

In other news, our cohorts over at HGTV Pro have just launched their new feature, Building the 2008 HGTV Green Home. And they’ve already got the first photos from the job site in South Carolina!

And yes, that’s right, HGTV Green Home 2008 is being built in South Carolina. I know there’s been just a bit of confusion in the comments. We’ll have more information soon about the exact location. And starting in late March of 2008, you’ll be able to enter for a chance to win the home!

  1. I would paint the exterior a yellow called Gaugin by Sherwin Williams with while trim. It looks great.

  2. Hellooooooooooooooo! Anybody home? I would love to see you again! I know the updates are coming, I’m just getting a little anxious and excited to see more. No pressure :)

  3. Since it’s a green home and in tune with nature and the home’s surroundings, why not beautiful shades of earth tones?

  6. How about a dweepsstake that would retrofit the winners home with the latest energy savings devices. I would volunteer my home for a starter program. Nice of me huh

  7. The GREEN HOME should be GREEN of course.

  8. It’s great that HGTV is setting such an example for green construction. Unfortunately, we’ve become such a wasteful society with a “dispose of” option. Perhaps your actions will motivate our government to better promote “green” construction as well. Thanks HGTV for helping bring GREEN to the frontline.

  9. I think an earth tone color would be pretty. Maybe a dark Khaki with white trim. Love the Low Country.

  11. I want to rebuild green. I don’t know where to start. Between the insurance company who’s been great and the building company they’ve put in me in touch with, I’m in unknown territory. My house burned down October 1st, at least most of it, all but the basement apartment. Suggestions? Others might be interested in this as well. If I need to rebuild, why not do it right? nobaryma@yahoo.com

  12. Any rich and earthy tone would be nice with white trim.
    OR
Any Pastel color with dark or warm wood tones on the trim.

  17. HGTV is now HBTV to give away a dream home in Harlem. Someone in their programming department overdosed on diversity training and chased everyone off to FineLiving!!

  18. HGTV, If you don’t mind me saying so, I am thinking you’re trying to “up the suspense” over the Green Home. I am dearly wanting to see it!!
By the way, I have an excellent idea for your next Green Home (provided you ever get the first one finished! LOL)

  20. An important component of “green” building is air quality. Regardless of color, paint can be an offensive addition to a building when it introduces VOCs, or Volatile Organic Compounds, to our environment or our bodies. VOCs found in traditional house paint can be, and often are, known carcinogens. Yolo Colorhouse is currently the only line offering an exterior paint with no VOCs in either the base or the tint (some paints that claim to be “VOC Free” are only free until you tint them with a toxic tint). The difference between VOC free paint and the “regular stuff”, is remarkable. I strongly suggest investigating Yolo exterior paint as a possibility. And you can’t go wrong with the Yolo palette!

  21. I like a light sage green for an exterior color with an off white trim. Some stone work would look nice also. Inside muted earth tones along with a bold interjection of color now and then. Can’t wait to enter-I absoulutely would love to own a green home.

Terri on December 13, 2007 at 12:48 pm
  22. So, will we be able to have a 3D tour soon of the Green Home, and is it being given away in January?

    What color will it be?

  23. Living green, pale or dark, has been the plea for years from environmentalists and other pro-earth personas since I can remember. Now I’m 40. I’m seeing, in recent years, a surge of peoples realizing just how urgent it is that we are more aware of how we treat our home. HGTV is always a leader in living well, from great design (Candace Olsen is simply DIVINE!) to Green design (Ed Begley is a bright Greenie!) I’m inspired and would be honored (and heard) to live in the first Green home giveaway. I’m always excited about the Dream home giveaway, but this would be a wondrous gift to have. I’ve never had my own home, and the thought of it is both overwhelming happifying and taunting. All of the color options were beautiful, but I would think green would be poetically suitable – Olive green looks so earthy, blending in with the country backdrop. Enough of this novel. I’ll keep dreaming and watching HGTV!

    Peace

  24. The Green Dream Home should be painted a pale green, with a white or dark green trim.

Deborah S. Hardy on December 17, 2007 at 9:53 pm
  25. I like the color sage with brick or stone mixed and maybe a deep red trim of sorts……Goes with the green theme…..

Thanks for keeping us posted and allowing us some input………….. Stay positive!

Margery on December 19, 2007 at 3:09 pm
  26. Sage Green should be the the color Because there are more variations of sage green than any other green in real life. Then using a light tan with small hints of dark brown for the trim would outstanding. Candace Olsen would just be the best for the interior design. I’m hoping the inside will be done to work with the ocean.

  28. i think green is appropriate. considering its the theme for the home. and also green is my favorite color. nothing like green to feel calming effect like the grass and trees , foliage etc. thanks for considering my choice. pale green dark green any green is fine with me. stephanie

STEPHANIE on December 19, 2007 at 10:26 pm
  29. I think Salmon is appropriate not pink but Salmon color with green trimmings.

Dorothia Bucks on December 21, 2007 at 8:43 am
  30. I chose the pale green; it has a understated elegance to it. To me the Olive and yellow are both to bold of colors for the South Carolina coast.

Daniel on December 22, 2007 at 10:28 am
  31. What a progressive concept to get “green-housing” on its way to saving our planet. Way to set the bar for the rest of the world’s residential developers and contractors. I certainly would pack my life and move there in an instant, if I were to be priveledged enough to win it!
I think the color should be natural wood, or an earth tone stain. Obviously something that could withstand the environment of the island, but not a paint. The dream green home should innately fit into it’s surroundings, and not stick out more than the natural beauty of the components that are used to build it…… just a thought :)

    Jonny O'Donnell on December 24, 2007 at 8:51 pm
  32. blue and green off course …bring the out doors in with the colors

Linda on December 25, 2007 at 7:50 pm
  33. I vote for green for the color of the green home. Nothing else would be as appropriate. A nice forest green with an off white trim. or maybe a strong irish green with a complementing trim. I just believe that it is best to advertise the homes commitment to being eco-friendly on it’s surface. Green home from the outside in.

Rowan on December 27, 2007 at 1:22 am
  34. Considering the location, I think a dark, wet looking sand color would be perfect with a dark woodsy trim and tinted sky lights to match the natural environment with lots of green/low maintenance plants keeping with the green theme.

Howard on December 27, 2007 at 11:12 am
  35. I think yellow would be a good shade. Yellow comes from the warmth of the sun along with cotton white trim. I would like to see natural rock or stone added to the green home. I think that these shades feel peaceful and look clean. Looking forward to finally seeing it!

    Olivia F. on December 27, 2007 at 4:05 pm
  36. okay, so i’ve got to chime in and suggest brown.

ray on December 27, 2007 at 11:05 pm
  37. I would like a yellow shade for the geen home along with a crisp white trim. Yellow has the warmth of the sun. It makes a cozy and warm welcome feeling. I am looking forward to seeing the green home progress.

    Olivia F. on December 28, 2007 at 9:57 am
  38. I CHOSE ALL GREEN AND YELLOW.I THINK THE LIGHTER COLOR GREEN WOULD MAKE IT FEEL MORE WARM.IT NICE THAT YOU HAVE ASK US TO HELP PICK THE COLORS BUT I THINK IT SHOULD BE YOU.HGTV HAS ALWAYS PUT TO GETHER A BEAUTIFUL DESIGNS.YOU ARE #1 IN MY BOOK.

ANNA MARIE on December 29, 2007 at 12:01 pm
  39. If I knew what material was being used on the outside of the home, it would be easier to choose the color. If the house is to be maintenance free, I believe the colors will be limited. Personally, maintenance free is more ideal than a home that has to be painted every two or three years. I do have two choices though: light (sage) green w/ dark (moss) green shutters or dove grey (not something that looks baby blue) w/ navy shutters.

Seems as though every dream home in the past has had a blue scheme on the inside. Are the designers afraid of brown, moss green, gold and etc.? Just because a house is near water doesn’t mean everything on the inside has to be blue.

Connie Roberts on December 29, 2007 at 12:28 pm
  40. There is no other color it must be green in order to fit the theme!!!

There is a very soft beautiful parakeet green Sherman Williams paint that was used in the HGTV dh 2008 that might be a perfect match!!

I admire HGTV so very much and am quite impressed that they were able to build and giveaway not one but 2 homes this year beyond generous!! this is what sets HGTV apart from any other station out there!!solar innovation is the wave of the future and HGTV is wise to be at the top of their game!!

I just can’t say enough about HGTV they really listen to their viewers and this I am sure is how the green home was able to come about into fruition!!

justmejulie on December 29, 2007 at 1:19 pm
  41. I believe the house should be sunshine yellow
with white trim and green shutters. The yellow reflects the idea of using the sun for electricity.

KATHY White on December 30, 2007 at 10:24 am
  42. the primary color should be andy’s ment green trimed in white.

agner on December 30, 2007 at 11:10 pm
  43. My favorite color is a pale yellow, so a pale yellow and some green accents. Throw some white in also I live in Lexington SC. It would be nice to live near the beach. Lots of room for my children to come and visit. Plus all my friends. I do not have much room now.

Jean Russ on December 31, 2007 at 5:48 pm
  44. So happy to finally see a green home. Maybe this will spark the trend for more builders and people to go green in their own homes. we have only one chance to preserve our earth and now is the time. color choices should be something natural. cant wait to see final outcome.
Thank you home and garden network!!

Mario on January 1, 2008 at 12:27 pm
  45. Instantly, I think of earth tones like greens and then traditional white and black would be outstanding.

Tresa on January 1, 2008 at 2:26 pm
  46. I’m starting to dream now. It would be nice if my daughter and I won the home. My daughter and I have been through alot. May 14 my long term boyfriend died from a head injury, September 25th to just recently losing our home and all our blongings do to a fire, to fighting with the insurance company to pay, etc.. So can’t wait to get a chance to win. I think as the other writer it should be a natural wood. I’m looking forward to learn more about this home. Thanks :) To all have a Happy New Year!!!

Holly on January 1, 2008 at 5:27 pm
  47. I am so excited that the first green home will be built in SC. I am a native south carolinian from the low country.I grow up in a small town about 45mins. form Hilton Head. I think a good color would be a kinda a moss green(maybe oakmoss by Sherwin-Williams)with white trim, and black shutters and doors. Or maybe the door could be a shade of red(maybe fireweed by Sherwin-Williams)

Maja Moore on January 1, 2008 at 11:57 pm
  48. Use transparent paint instead of opaque to add a refective quality. Colors from nature’s palette will give the home life. Special attention to both warm and cool color placement will guarantee a sense of balance. Top off with nontoxic paint to make a complete ecofriendly retreat!

  50. I am so proud of all of you at HGTV. Not only for all the hard work you do, but for the precedent you are setting with this wonderful Green Home build. I look forward to getting new and exciting ideas from future shows in 2008. You bet I’m entering the contest as well. I adore the Carolina’s. Happy New Year to you all and please continue to change people’s lives.
