It’s Announcement Time!

Hey HGTV Green Home fans, the big day is finally here! Without further ado, here’s Jack Thomasson to announce the location of HGTV Green Home 2009! (Is it just me, or is he looking particularly handsome on horseback?)

And if you love following the construction of HGTV’s Green Homes as much as I do, check out HGTVPro.com’s Building the 2009 HGTV Green Home. In addition to today’s location announcement, you’ll be able to see videos and slide shows of the home being built from the ground up. Plus, get field reports from blogger Marilyn Bauer, who’s got all the behind-the-scenes scoop from the construction site.

  3. Hey Jack…you looked amazing on horseback & boy am I glad I changed my guess at the last minute to Tradition, Florida!!

The film is exciting & the area is situated amidst more than 400 acres of lakes and waterways!! WOW!! Tradition’s neighborhoods are dotted with cozy parks and playgrounds, and linked by miles of paved pathways for jogging, riding a bike or just taking a lazy, evening stroll. The Town of Tradition offers a lifestyle that’s unmatched anywhere in America…and, I love the idea that you are so close to a Mets’ game!! Tradition Field, located on Peacock Boulevard in Port St. Lucie, is the home field for the New York Mets spring training and the Florida League St. Lucie Mets in baseball season!! Yes, I am a baseball fan!!

Florida’s Treasure Coast, with seven residential neighborhoods surrounding a town square, neighborhood parks, lakes and a retail shopping center….I am stoked!!!! It is the PERFECT area for the next Green Home!! Thank you HGTV for the ongoing dreams!! Marie Miller

  4. Awesome!!!!! I love Port St.Lucie is close to everything, and the beaches I must say Jack you did do it justice, I love how you showed how great the aerea is. I’m from South Florida and that’s where I go to get away and just relax and ride bike. So I can not wait to see how the Green Home is going to develop. I think I wand this more than the Dream Home.

  10. I’m soooo excited about this home.It looks like it will be concrete stucco and have a spiral stair case off the balcony.I see a tower and I love the windows,Oh I’m sooo excited about this home I know I already said that.It looks like it will been Spanish, tuscan european style.Just what I’ve been asking for.I can’t wait to see the floor plans.
I hope Linda and Jack use better furniture than last time.I would like to see them use Ethan Allen tuscan collection or Thomasvill furniture Hills of Tuscany Collection. It does not have to be green to please me.I just hope the inside to have that same look as the out side.I think I also see a fountain.Oh so cool. This will be the best of all HGTV dream homes. They all have been beautiful but this one is gonna be it for me.

Linda on November 3, 2008 at 11:58 am
  11. Wow! looks like a great place for the new Green home. I am a little disappointed that it is in Florida, just because it seems HGTV has built so many homes there. However, from what I could tell it looks like the house might be universal design? That would be great. Finally a home everyone could use easily. I look forward to seeing the floor plans. Way to go HGTV!

I would love to live there. My husband has a friend who lives there, he told my husband he has a job waiting for him if we ever wanted to move there. I hope I win. I am so ready to move there. I’m from PA. I am sooo sick of winter. GO GREEN!!

  23. Tradition is a fantastic town. I only live 15 minutes away in Fort Pierce. I was just there last weekend for a breast cancer walk.

When the town was brand new (it’s only 5 years old), it kinda creeped me out at first. It’s almost TOO perfect! But it sure has grown on me, and my husband and I want to buy a house there. What a treat that would be to win this house!

Jessie on November 4, 2008 at 6:11 am

  33. I have family at Penney Farms, FL and Mineola, FL. This would be a great location to be close to them.
Please keep handicap access in mind while building this. Also doors and hallways wide enough for wheelchairs and grab bars in the bathrooms. No matter what your age, grab bars are welcome!

  38. Wow, what a beautiful home and what a beautiful place to build it. I am going to enter this sweepstakes and hopefully win this magnificent home. We live in a mobile home now and it isn’t very hurricane proof, plus my husband is on dialysis and awaiting a kidney transplant. We would so love to have this home. Keep up the good work. Every home that HGTV has built is magnificent and every location better than the last.

  40. It looks like it’s going to be a nice home,,,,,One of the first things I noticed about the neighbor hood is the closeness of the church. It also looked like a nice place for someone in their 50’s to go to and fit right it.I’ll continue to watch it’s progress.

    Sandy S. on November 5, 2008 at 6:02 pm
  46. I’d like to see you do the next Green Home in a TN or KY setting, MT or ID setting. There are just as many nice areas there as is in Florida. Not everyone likes the beach! What about those of us who like to mountain climb or walk trails? I’m sure everyone who wins a HGTV home still needs to work too. Keep in mind that we would like a great location as well as somewhere we can work too. Are you listening Jack????

Pam on November 5, 2008 at 6:35 pm
  47. I am dreaming {and drooling-not too much} of the “Grand Slam” green home in Port St. Lucie. That spot is perfect for my family and I. Especially since my son now works and lives in nearby in Jupiter/Juno. It has always been my dream to own a “getaway home” large enough for my folks and I to go to during the hard winter months in Maine. It would be so wonderful to have that opportunity to share with my family and friends. We all can dream.
Looking forward to seeing the progression, Traci

Traci on November 5, 2008 at 6:56 pm
  48. This would be a great place to take my parents for the winter. They don’t like the winter anymore. I love the details and the care you put into each home you build. Thank you for giving all of us the chance to win such a beautiful home. Good luck to us all. It’s in God’s hands now!

  49. Wow! I love Florida - the sand, sun, and lots of fun! The design for this home is fantastic. I like seeing other materials being used for the framing of the house besides wood. I hope this will inspire other builders to take notice. I know this home will be the best ever!

  53. Jack, I’m so excited that I can’t wait to move in. I missed the last dreamhome giveaway. I don’t want to miss this one. It would be nice to live closer to my family in Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana. I love the east coast. It’s time for me to come home. My siblings and I have always wanted a home central to each other. That would work! If you’re available when I win the home, I’ll even invite you to dinner. Leah

My daughters though for sure we had won the previous home but now I know why we didn’t, this is the one for us. Thanks for helping me and my daughters survive another winter (hopefully our last in Ohio) and keep us warm with dreams of a beautiful FL home!

  66. I love all the homes you have designed and would love to live anywhere in Florida. I especially love the homes that you have designed for artists. The only complaint I would have would be if I ever won one of these I’d have to sell due to how expensive they are. That’s the worst part…to have to sell the perfect home.

We bring the boys to Disney World once a year and stay in that area at the beach. We will be retiring again 2009. This is a wonderful place. I will be going there in February I can not wait to go see the progress you have made. This is wonderful. Your show has blessed my life.

  107. Awesome! We lived in Port Saint Lucie for many years and decided to move to Atlanta, GA about 3 years ago. Recently, we decided we wanted to move back :) I guess we have to win the house! Tradition is a beautiful location! I can’t wait to see the final project!

  108. Very beautiful location. A place I could only dream of being. I will be looking forward to entering the sweepstakes. Thanks for giving us a chance to dream about having something this awesome in our lives.

  109. Bada Bing! Wow what an amazing town, I’ve never been there but would like to visit soon.
The art gallery looks interesting. Thanks for sharing this with us. Jennifer C.

    Jennifer C. on November 6, 2008 at 11:43 am
  110. Looks like it will be a beautiful home. I lived in Fort Pierce until 1968. At that time Port Saint Lucie was much smaller, but it has become a large, thriving town on its own. It would be great for us to live in Port St. Lucie where we retirees wouldn’t be bothered by cold weather as here in upstate South Carolina. Sounds like the good life for someone. Just maybe us?

Carl Woody on November 6, 2008 at 11:44 am
  111. Amazing, I was just on craigslist.org looking for a place to rent along the Treasure Coast to be near my son. At the same time I opened the HGTV email and watched the announcement video. When I heard ‘Treasure Coast’, I cried (I’m in Miami and tried for the Keys home). I had planned on driving by Port St. Lucie tomorrow to get to my son. I may check out the progress on the way. Green! wow! a dream!

Daisy on November 6, 2008 at 11:47 am

Hopefully my luck will change as I go through the daily sweepstakes entries again. My parents and sister would be thrilled as they have relocated to Florida.

  122. Wow!!! What a great location. I’ve been trying to win the dream home for years now, but this is truly one of my favorites. Hope I win it for the whole family. We’ve never owned a vacation home and we can’t afford to buy one. It would be a great vacation home for everyone in my family including grandparents, uncles, aunts, and of course friends are always welcome.
I’ll be entering everyday to try and win it. Hopefully I can make everyone’s wish come true.

From NJ to Florida, not so bad of a ride.

  124. Florida, Florida, Florida. Do you pay for the perpetual hurricane/tornado/flood/termite insurance as well? It looks like it will be a lovely home, and Port St. Lucie would be great for this Mets fan, but how about building a green house in the North instead of the sunny South. Might be a more interesting challenge, and it would stand less chance of getting blown away in the Fall.

Nancy on November 6, 2008 at 5:18 pm

  131. Jack, OK, you look great on a horse. But clear up something for us. Was that glimpse of a home and floor plan really the next Green Home, or just a sample of what homes in the neighborhood are like? Some of us bloggers seem to be confused. And if there is a Green Home in 2010, please consider going west or north, north, north.
That would really be a challenge for a Green Home. What could you do without a Tradition community already in place? Antway, I love you and HGTV and can’t wait to see how the Green Home develops.

Is David going to be contributing color? How about a divine design from Candice. Oh, oh and how about some carpentry from Carter. Yes this is really exciting news.I already warned my family that I will probably be unavailable for long periods of time. LOL.

I think of making my way back down south again. My wife and four Chidren would have to get use to the change but I adapt easy. Hint! Hint! My Younger Brother still lives in Florida With his wife and child and it would be nice to live near him again.

  169. Hehehehawhaw, I’m still laughing. Someone from South Carolina wanted to move to Florida to avoid the “cold winters”. That person should live in Minnesota, North Dakota, Michigan or Maine. Too funny! But with all the Floridians blogging, I will bet my bottom dollar (which isn’t much) that the winner will NOT be from Florida. And Anonymous and Beach Lady, what is going on with you two? Trying to involve JT? Just stop it. If BL truly needs our prayers, she will let us know.

  176. I have wanted to move to Florida, on the Gulf, for my entire life. I’ve raised my 2 kids by myself, they’re all grown, and all living with me now, including a grand daughter!

I’m a teacher so I have the luxury of being able to drive to Florida every summer and spend a month there in the Bradenton/Sarasota area. I always drive south along the coast before returning home just to see each time how beautiful the entire coast is. Both my parents have passed recently and now I’d give anything to finally be able to move there, my slice of heaven.

Thank you so much for choosing the Gulf shore!

Although I’m going to enter the sweepstakes I undoubtebly will NOT win…oh well…I can dream.

I’ve actually been looking into designing a green home plan in order to have my own dream green home. Although it will not be located in Florida or be as nice as the one on HGTV, I’m sure I will still enjoy it.

You’ve done it again HGTV, cannot wait to see the complete project (and the face on the unsuspecting winner).

  204. Dear ANONYMOUS: I am grateful that Beach Lady has friends like you. She sounds like a wonderful person, and of course I will pray for her and her nephew. But don’t you think her involvement with JT should be kept private? I can’t imagine either of them being happy about what you are writing on this blog. Anyway, I mostly laugh at myself and did not mean to be flippant. Keep well.

  206. Hello everyone at HGTV. I must say that this is going to another wonder that you all have come up with. I am here in the beautiful mountains of Tennessee and dreaming of winning the new green home, and wishing that one day you all will build one here. I just want to say that God has given each of you a great talent and you are using it by doing these houses. It is a wonderful thing that you give hope to someone in this big world that they might win this home. I too like so many will be entering the sweepstakes and pray that I might win, but good luck to everyone that will enter. Thanks to all of you for so much that you do. I wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving.

  215. Florida again?? I enjoy following the dream and green homes’ progress. But I think they should be called Dream Vacation Homes. It seems like the homes are often positioned in resort towns and much larger than necessary for everyday living. As always though, eager to see the final results.

  231. Yeah right, I just moved back north from Tradition. Real estate agents for Victoria parc and Seasons have filed for chapter 11 and 13. The place looks like a ghost town. My opinion, looks like PSL and Tradition greased palms at HGTV to come there and build. Good luck on your house that will be worth very little.

  236. Great location. I can’t wait to enter. And, most importantly, it looks like the house is going to be ICF (Insulated Concrete Form). That is the best! It’s about time we see this and see it in Florida, too. ICF is soooo green it is ridiculous, and it can withstand winds up to approx 200 MPH. I live in an ICF house in Michigan and love it. Husband is an ICF installer. Hope I win!

  238. I lived in Key West for three years in the mid 70’s. Moved back to NY so my now x-husband could run his father’s business. After spending the majority of my life in the cold North East I long for those warm beach days once again. My x and his wife now live in the Key’s during the winter months. We all get along great. How incredible it would be to find myself back in the warm sunshine again. If I won the house I would invite the x and his wife to dinner and where we could look back on the past with a smile, continue to look forward as friends and share some great new laughs together. Life is about living….and I can’t think of a better place to do that then in a new green home. Thanks for the opportunity to enter and possibly win.

Gosh, these bones would appreciate the warmth of Florida. We had snow and I’m tired of that scene. Going Green is part of our way of living and this home would bring out even better ideas for my hubby and me.
    Bring it on!!!

WE have some relatives already living in Florida therefore it would be a pleasure to own such a beautiful home and have them over anytime they’d want to come…

  249. As a wordsmith, with over 50 years of experience in Aerospace, cell-systems and computers, it is really amazing to me that a large percentage of the population has never learned the English language, and how to use the language correctly.
Considering the extensive deflation of the housing market, I am concerned that my present home will be worthless, and I will really be grateful if I could win the home in Florida (which others do not like, or are not interested in another HKTV home in Florida). Would make an effort to make the house a shelter for the less-fortunate folks, if I am fortunate to be declared the winner. Thankful and grateful to avoid my possibly living on the street next year. John

  250. Can hardly wait until this is done. Didn’t win last year either home built by HGTV but maybe this year will be our lucky year. We are getting close to retirement and no plans on where to retire; California wine country would work for me. HGTV - great program - does great things - inspires people and gives them hope for a better living environment, especially Design on a Dime that doesn’t require much money. Keep up the good work, love watching this program; my husband says sometimes “too much”.

  275. I lived in Port St. Lucie for 17 years. I left there 2 yrs ago and would never go back. The schools are terrible, there are no decent paying jobs (unemployment is at 10%) there is NOTHING to do there other than the beach, and believe me that gets old after awhile. You might want to do a little research before you enter to win this one.

  292. I was in Florida once. A major hurricane hit that state the week before we got there and another chased us out of there early, causing us to cut our vacation short. There are so many fantastic places in this country. Wouldn’t it be novel to to consider someplace other than Florida? Just a thought.

Janice on January 3, 2009 at 9:38 pm
  293. Hi Jack,I think the next Green or Dream House should be bilt in Beautiful Nevada City or Grass Valley California. This is the heart of the old Gold Country. You should see it hear in December (Cornish & Victorian Christmas),it’s just like the old days. Except that people are bussed in from all over some from as far away as the Bay Area.

crisis I have lost everything I had saved for my retirement. I live in Florida and my family as well. This house will be perfect!!!

  295. I am close to retirement age and never owned my own home. It would be wonderful to have my first home be “green.” I love warm weather and the beach so Florida would be a wonderful place to move to.

  296. 99.9% of the people that enter this contest, or any HGTV Dream Home contest, could not come up with the money to pay the taxes on the 2 million prize value of the contest. Unless they are already a millionaire, they wouldn’t be able to afford the yearly property tax bill either. Best case scenario for the winner is to sell the house immediately and make at most $50,000 after taxes. Whoever buys this house from the “winner” is going to get a great vacation home.

Port St Lucie is centrally located and seems quite peaceful. Would have loved the 1st green home, but the location for this one is actually better for me since all my children live in Fl.

  304. Wow I can’t believe it….Port St. Lucie…My home town for almost 13 years and you guys are finally building a home around the corner. I personally live with my wife Susan in one of the oldest original developement in Port St. Lucie which is Sandpiper Bay/Club Med and although I think it is one of the nicest place to live I thought Tradition which we have visited has a old town feel. Can’t afford to renuvate this house but WOW what a surprise for my wife to get her a new house. She is known to everyone as the Martha Stewart and a new kitchen, dining room would be great for her entertainment setting. Can’t wait to see the finished product. Watch the show many times and never entered in the contest…who knows we might get lucky.
By the way great job on the other homes and love the home in Colorado.

  306. Jack, I missed last years green home until the give away. It was wonderful. A true dream home. I have never been to Florida, however, I do have to agree with some of your bloggers about location. I love the 4 seasons and winter is one of my favorites. Although understanding that the winter months are not ideal for dream homes, you have to agree that they have become mild in most areas. I would think that Virgina would be an ideal location or maybe even Maryland. I’m a New Yorker for all of my life and they say you can get use to the heat of Florida, and am willing to go. I also would love to see green home items incorporated into your dream home on HGTV also. Good luck, it looks like it will be a great home to have.

  313. Hey Gentle People!

It is really great that you have chosen Florida for your secon eco-friendly home. However, I think your ought to consider Michigan as the site for your next home. An eco-friendly home overlooking one of the many lakes would be “groovy.” By the way, I refuse to get your pitty by saying that the Detroit Lions now have the worst non-winning record in the history of the NFL; or that the Mayor of Detroit (the largest city in Michigan) was recently “busted” and is now serving time in jail; or that the Michigan-based automotive industry is in suffering its worst economic downturn since the Great Depression; and that Michigan has been in a deep recesion longer than any other state in the Union; or that our winters seem to last 6 months; or…. Do I need to say anything else? In spite of all these “shortcomings” I try to maintain a positive attitude and hope that by 2010 you will chose Michigan as the site for your next eco-friendly home.

For those of you not happy with the Florida location you have NO IDEA what you are missing out on…I moved to Florida 2.5 years ago from Chicago and 36 years of (buurrr) winter!! Everyday I am so happy to be in such a warm wonderful climate. The furthest you would ever be from any beautiful beach is an hour drive!!! How can you doubt that the Green House is in a spectacular place. Blessings to the future winner…

Kimberly on January 4, 2009 at 5:38 pm
  316. I can’t believe you chose Tradition for an Eco- friendly home. I am a St. Lucie County Native that was very upset when Tradition built. They cleared almost 2000 acres of Natural Florida Environment without any regard to the native wildlife. They did not leave a tree standing all in the name of money. I am very disappointed that HGTV didn’t chose a more environmental friendly developer for this.

  319. Hey, another Florida home, global warming and climate
change, why are you building on the coast? Wouldn’t it be
smarter to take an older home, upgrade it, green it and
conserve resources. I love HGTV but, we need to
stop the madness and live with what we have! Stop
taking up more land and reuse, remake, remodel
and love what we have, not what we think we want.

  328. Well I am totally disappointed in HGTV on their site selection for homes. I was in Islamorada this past weekend and discovered the HGTV home there has issues with locals. The site for the home there was totally cleared for construction, typical of irresponsible homebuilders. It takes trees hundreds of years to grow because of the
coral subsoil. Now you are building a home in Port. St. Lucie, a place with one of the highest foreclosure rates in Florida. Who is the genius in charge of this giveaway? He/she should be fired!

  352. I’ve been to Tradition, Fl since 2003 when the entire town was flat without any building on it except the clubhouse. Since then, I’ve watched it mature in its development to a beautiful, family-oriented town for many to call home. In 2006, all of my plans changed, however, from moving into my home planned by Kennedy builders in Heritage Oaks because my 20-yr. old son passed away from a brain aneurism triggered by a grand mol seizure from epilepsy, then, my brother was killed in Iraq, & I was sick with a treatable form of leukemia. However, in 2007, God blessed me with my current beau & a handsome little boy, which is now 9 mos. old….we’ve moved across the country to be close to his grandparents….but, still long for our original dream of living & raising our son in Tradition, Fl, because of its diversity & quality school system. I pray for all whose made comments….that we all have some kind of wish granted us somehow by the Lord, Thanks & God Bless….Nita

  353. Port St Lucie is nice but very boring for younger people. Not too many activities for 20-40 year olds. No upscale stores around, you have to travel to West Palm Beach for stores like Limited, Pottery Barn, Nordstrom, Bloomies, etc. There is a lot of crime, and always a lot of traffic on US1. Property taxes and home insurance are very high in this area!

It is about all I ever watch. I dream constantantly of winning a dream home. I am very into decorating and just love the work in all the homes you all build. Many of my family members live in Fl. and I miss them very much. To be able to move near them would be phenominal. I know so many people need a home more than others, but the possiblity of winning a dream home, would be a dream of a lifetime. 358. It looks like it will be a lovely house, and I am happy that you are teaching others how to “build green,” but why don’t you build one in Ohio? We have some beautiful lakes, since you seem to place all your homes near the water (oceans). It would be a good lesson to see how you’d build a home that would work well in an icy, snowy winter as well as in a hot, humid summer.

  370. The house looks and feels wonderful. We live in New Jersey in a home with a similar layout! We call it a boomerang house. Ask a Feng Shui advisor about the layout, as I did. It confuses them somewhat. My Feng Shui advisor had to ask her master advisor; his suggestion was to divide the home into two homes for directional purposes. The rest flows from there…

We currently are living in a AZ mining area, and have to rent company homes. We have had to jump start our life 3 times due to economy and helping children. I would love to have this magnificent home for my family. My husband has had 4 heart attacks and 2 severe back surgeries, so a beautiful space to live and be close by in Charleston, SC. We love the water, sun, and what appears to be a friendly atmosphere in a family friendly town.

Linda Smerglia on January 8, 2009 at 2:22 pm
  375. Opps, I meant to say be close to our Grandchildren in Charleston, SC. I wish everybody could look at the earth as wisely as you have come to do. What’s more you show us that it is not that difficult to initiate even small changes. Any changes elongate our planet’s useful lifespan. Your amazing!

It would only happen in America at HGTV. I am an addict to your show and product ideas. Its better than apple pie. Aloha from an Island Girl at Heart -

  394. Florida is still one of the half dozen states that still have no state income tax. That is a big pluss..

It has lots of sun, some rain, a little wind and a whole lot of people that come for vacations and to retire… Should tell you something right there…

    We love it…

  404. HGTV YOU NEED ME to WIN this totally amazing Green Home!!WHY?For many reasons. One being,I will be the most excited, articulate& the most appreciative winner you ever had! Which would make your best show ever! No offence to some past winners, but, they are kind of lame & don’t appear to be appreciative.I live with my 79 yr old Mother & my brother,John, who was injured in a diving acccident 30 yrs. ago, which left him paralyzed from the chest down.Mom is his sole caregiver since day one. It’s getting much harder for both of them as they are getting up in age.My dream is to get them out of cold NJ & go to FLA.My son,Fred Gall, a Pro Skateboarder lives in Miami Beach. Our lives would be much better for us to be closer to him & to be in the beautiful warm weather of FLA.Mom dedicated her whole life to care for my brother,& no one deserves this amazing, perfect green home more than she! Please, help me make this dream come true.No one will be more greatful then us! 407. I think it’s great the home is going to be green. I hope the homes in the future will be very handicap friendly not only for myself with Multiple Sclerosis, but for all potential winners. It would be great if each year a different state be chosen. I do hope if I am not chosen that someone in need is. God Bless and keep safe all of our men and women in uniform and their families.

  413. Port St. Lucie is a decent town for working people with families looking for an area with low crime (Port St. Lucie used to be ranked in the top 10 safest cities in America) and good size houses for families.

The area has grown a LOT in the past 10 years. Speculators came and overbuilt, leaving the city reeling from foreclosures, but if anyone is seriously thinking about moving to Florida (even if you don’t win the dream home), take a look around sometime. The housing is very affordable these days!

The city is huge land wise….something like 75 square miles… Your experience in one part of the city may be entirely different if you go somewhere else. It’s quite sprawling, but there is a lot of natural beauty, especially by the water. If you’re ever in the area, take a good look around!

    Best of luck to everyone!

It is a little daunting to read the rules of these giveaways and realize what happens when one does win. 429. I love the floor plan! The sliding wall that opens on to the screened porch is awesome. The open plan is great for entertaining. The tower provides a place for the hot FL air to go; is there a device that opens the windows up there? Speaking of windows, I noticed that some on the sketch aren’t marked on the floor plan. I’m really hoping that includes access from the master to the porch, and a window in the guest and study. I know it’s got to be green and efficient, but…..Also, I like the closets before the master bath. My husband and I have that now, we just put 8′h sliding (mirrored) doors, to keep it from feeling dark, on them. Just a suggestion for those that didn’t like the design.

You guys are doing such a terrific thing, building homes, green and dream, giving them away, you and your sponsors. Thank you so much! It brings smiles to so many faces, hope into so many lives, even if it’s just for alittle while. Good luck and good health to all. Cindy

  441. Ditto”"”"”"”to Marie Miller`s commits!!We retire next year(2010), and wouldn`t it be great to have a second home in Port St. Lucie, Fl.!!~And in a Green Home at that!!My sister lives in Winter Haven, Fl., so it would be wonderful for us and the grandchildren, and families, to gather here at “reunion” times and regular times to visit!!!Gosh, I really would not know what to do if we won! My grandchildren would love Traditon Stadium, and we would love the walking/jogging tracks, and the shopping! It doesn`t have to be upscale shops, especially with the economy the way it is!!I have always wanted to live on the beach, since I was a kid, and one of the very first places that we visited (as I was a child),was Port St. Lucie. In fact, my family has a cute saying about me, regarding St. Lucie and my childhood. Ha!!Cannot wait to enter and throw a big soiree for us and our friends, because I know they would want to visit asap!!And it`s also great for our two shitzu`s!!! Regards, Paula

  463. I am excited to see another in florida. This has always been my dream place to live. My husband says it is the only state he would actually move to with me. Since I have not won in the past I hope to do better this time. Good luck to everyone though, it will be awsome for who ever wins, I can’t wait.

This project has really made me stop and think about what I can do as one person to help our world. The house is gorgeous!!!!

  467. I hope this area is a good area for re-sale, since the winner generally sells the home to build one in the area of their choice.
I had heard that Tradition was not economically the best place for re-sale value.
Is this true, is Tradition having a hard time selling their lots? I really hope not, but one of the bloggers from there said that this was a poor choice, and if they live in the area they should know what they are speaking about.
I would sell and build near my children and grandchildren, here in the west. Mine would still be a green home, one built with hay bales.
Have you ever thought of building with hay bales?
I love the west and I could never move far from my family, I would build a home big enough to house us all!
My best to you all, and I do so enjoy entering this contest and dreaming about all life’s possibilities, if only…….

  468. I have been watching the show for some time, and have done many things that have made improvements. in and around the house, especially if it pertained to being eco friendly or reduce monthly expenses.after my fiancee was diagnosed with breast cancer and currently undergoing the final phases of radiation treatments. reading all literature on the effects that exposure from the many things in ones house may contribute to illness and even cancer so when i heard hgtv was doing this green friendly house i just had too see if i could enter to win to pay it forward by showing her just how happy I am to be with her by giving her a new house when we get married.

  482. For those who lost so much due to the bad economy, winning the house is our most redeeming gift of life. There is nothing more rewarding in this world than being remembered that we too need a good place to live to truly be back to the race of man.

May the winner remember those who are less fortunate even in prayers alone.

  484. I have to say that while I am reading these comments it is upsetting to see alot of people thinking they deserve a free home because they are sick or handicapped in some way. Please, any of us human beings would love a free home, none of us deserves a free home we are all in the same boat for crying out loud. At least most of us who enter contest like this are. We struggle daily with our own needs financial hardships, Phyisical hardships, mental hardships. Yes some of us are in worse situations than others but life is not easy for anyone. I just wish people would not use a sad situation to try and gain what they think is a sympathy vote. Just say it like it is you want to win. Then if you win you can tell your sad tale and hopefully the new home you win will change your life and the life of those you care about. This is not Extreme Home Make Over House Edition… This is just one awesome Green Home Sweepstakes giveaway… I want to win just because I do!

Karen Cruz on January 15, 2009 at 5:49 pm
  485. All of the houses you have done are awsome. I dont really have a preference to where they happen to be built. I really hate where I am at right now. My family has recently all moved in together with me and my Daughter and my house is way too small . At this time winning a house is the fastest way to get more space for all of us. I will enter all untill I win one. Although I will miss the Mountains When I do.

What a great source of information. I’d like to get one of the episodes to show to my science students as well. Please contact me with contact & pricing information. I’m so hoping & praying it will be my name that it chosen this year. Does anyone know what the taxes are on the place? I wonder if it would be more than my annual salary as a teacher? Hmm…

  502. Florida is a great place to build a Green Home…Green homes in Florida are fantastic and make a lot of sense for the economy and for our future electic use. We do have a Nuclear power plant in Port Saint Lucie but going Green will reduce the need. I plan to visit the home that is just 20 minutes from me. A Green home in Tradition equals a masterpiece of building..

  506. Ok, I’m appreciative of such opportunities to win such magnificent houses offerred by HGTV Sweepstakes/contests.But, I have to ask and wonder if any of these places are able to be kept, maintained and lived in once actually won? It’s one thing to win the home of your dreams, but keeping it after taxes etc.? Perhaps better concept?

Mark on January 16, 2009 at 9:57 pm
  507. How about building a smaller version say around a 1500-1900 Sq. foot green home in the foothills of the mountains of NC so people like myself who enter sweepstakes could possible win something that they could pay the taxes on. I, like other middle class single folks would love to have a home and be able to really keep a home for ourselves, instead of having to always sell beenough cause you can not pay the taxes on a big home. I would love to enter a sweepstakes where a middle class person who works hard could just keep a beautiful place like this one.

  511. I agree with Mark, most of us would love to own one of these homes but would not be able to afford it. The taxes and upkeep for we average people make it impossible to keep the property. How about rural Pacific Northwest,Northern Idaho or Montana?

  536. I’m extremely excited to see how happy the last owner was with her new home.

It is even more exciting for me to see the Green aspect being used more in home building everywhere. I hope that when it comes time for me to own a home these options will become even more affordable.

I always wanted to win the Dream Home. But if I were to choose I would choose the Green Home for myself and for anyone else.

I have never owned a home, and have been looking the last few years trying to figure out how to do so. Once I do I want to try and build Green. Not just for the sake of saving money but also for the eco-system.

So as it is, until this last year when the Green Home came out I didn’t even apply to win either home. I am glad to see this come about, and wish the best to everyone.

I envy the 2008 Green Home winner, and hope that she enjoys her time there with her family.

  544. We are retired baby boomers living our dream of travelling in our RV in Florida during the winter months. Having lived during a period of time when people were not concerned about the environment and having seen recycling efforts born to protect the environment for others, we are more concerned today that our grandchildren will have a better earth handed over to them. It is essential that people become more concerned about building eco friendly houses. We will be close to Port St Lucie next week and look forward to seeing this house. We love the beach and picture ourselves living there. Our RV will be for sale!

  545. You finally found California for the Dream Home (just the wrong part)! Now let’s see if you can find the High Desert, maybe Boulder City, Nevada or even Henderson. Whats left of Lake Mead for water sports, seasonal weather, many types of activities for Families, Casinos for Wanna be Adults, Churches, Stores for everything under the Sun, (even many Factory Outlet Malls) Natural Parks and recreational areas, Mt Charleston for sking in the winter and cooling of in the summer! Why can’t those of us who love the Desert be on your list for the NEXT GREEN HOME???? Think OUTSIDE THE FLORIDA EMVELOPE for a change! I for one would never live where the bugs are bigger than I am and where the winds blow in circles!! I would like to live in a green home back where I love the weather and the amenities…SOUTHERN NEVADA!!!!! MY HOME!!!
Unfortunately I am LOST in IOWA right now, so PLEASE take me HOME! PLEASE.

  547. The Ocean is a wonderful place to build the Green Home. But the hurricanes in the Florida area conserns me. Have you ever thought about New Mexico, specifically the SW protion liken Silver City south through the boot-heal? Lots of sun all year round for solar power and great windmill power. No hurricanes, tornados, nor major snowstorms

  549. I agree with Sarah that New Mexico would be a great place to build a Green House for HGTV. I live in Angel Fire, a ski resort with great weather for both winter and summer adventures. New Mexico is also very eco-friendly. I look forward to being the winner of one of your wonderful homes.

  550. The floorplan is wonderful. My husband and I are retired. We have always loved the idea of a master unit off to itself. Guests will be welcome but also have their own privacy. Sounds like a great town.

  551. If we all don’t start thinking and living green, our earth will suffer the consequences. Let’s all do our part to save this beautiful earth we live on. We can live well and yet do our part to conserve. This home is a wonderful example of the future possibilities that lie ahead for all of us.

  553. I love this home even more than the Dream Home. The location is dreamland! The house is clean and smart. I am so wanting to win this house. I would relocate and get out of this teeny, tiny, incy, wincy “compartment” that my son and I live in. I have the living room–he has the bedroom. To live in a place that is roomy and in a location where the air is clean. I would never ask for another thing in my life!!! I WANT THIS HOME SWEET HOME!!!!

    Belinda J on January 20, 2009 at 9:32 pm
  554. This is my small way of showing what I got from the history that was made today. I wish everyone the best….if you win this house may you enjoy it to the best of your ability. Just know that the hope we have to win this house is also the hope that we get from Barack Obama. God Bless.

  560. I lived in Miami, FL for 34 years and now live in Traditions, Port St. Lucie, FL (home of the next HG Green Home. I am probably 5 minutes away from the home and as far as this town goes, it is a great place to raise a family. Tradition has everything- a variety of shopping stores, great homes all around, and beautiful landscaping. The beaches are about 20 minutes away and a huge, brand new mall is in the making within this city (PSL).
I have been teaching here for the last 2 years and 10 in Miami but Miami, FL has gotten sooooo expensive that it was time to get out.
I wish everyone good luck and yes, I am entering too since I have been renting for a long time.

  561. From the “Female Forrest Gump.” My spouse is still in the Marines, but this tired cop (age 32)is ready to settle down on the East coast of the U.S. I am looking into building a home based on my environmental background to include rainwater, recycled materials and insulaton, zero energy bills, etc. My heart has placed me in the law enforcement path (does not pay well) but I love what I do on a daily basis. The major cons is that I never see my husband or two kids. One of these days, I will own a home like this and have time to talk to my kids before they go to sleep everynight. One of these days, I hope to spend more than a couple months out of the year with my husband or actually be in the same country as my spouse for an entire year. We will sit in our eco-friendly home with all the windows wide open and enjoy our kids running around…nothing more.

Tired COP on January 21, 2009 at 11:22 pm
  562. By the way, we just moved from Japan. While living there, we recycled NINE different ways. By the time I pulled out my recycled materials there was almost nothing left in our trash can. I still recycle here and cringe on the thought of using styrofoam. I cannot convey how tiring it is trying to find a builder in NC (Currently living in VA)that does not smirk when I say I want to build green. They automatically start adding in extra expensive green options instead of cost-effective ones. I wish I could win JUST the green materials (solar panels, tank-less water heater, etc.) instead of a house…someone needs a home more than me out there.

  583. Green homes are certainly the way we need to go. However, in some areas it is difficult to find someone to do them justice. Your group does a fabulous job. I love the Florida area. The beaches and wildlife there have just as much to loose as any from our continued abuse. You go HGTV and keep up the good work. We appreciate all you do.
Maybe you will see me there. Best of luck to everyone.

  599. I have viewed the beautiful home from the cold state of Michigan. What a dream, and what better to do than dream. My late Mother taught me never stop dreaming. The past 18 years have been hard years for my Husband and I,we both lost our spouses and remarried and was able to find happiness and beat the odds to make another wonderful life for one another. He has been my support system as I cared for my Brother and Father during their time of bad health and we lost them both. Then he welcomed my Mother into our home and helped me care for her for 3 years, without him I would have never been able to do it.She is gone now but the past 17 months he has been in back pain because he had to lift my Mother off the floor 8 times in 2 days. I see him slowing down and it I see his pain daily.I would love for him to be able to enjoy the warm weather of Florida. So I dream. But most the most important thing is that God Blesses this home to some one in need. We have so many people in America today that don’t even have a home or a job.

  601. I feel that all the dream homes should feature ALL that this country has to offer. It would be a dream if HGTV would go north, south, east, west, midwest, and even to Alaska (I see that you are considering Hawaii). A different part of the country each time. There is the Dream Home, the Green Home and the Blog Cabin plenty of opportunities. I personally cannot be in the sun for very long (skin cancer), so not everyone is a sun bunny.

judy on January 27, 2009 at 12:08 pm
  602. I just hope that whoever wins this house really deserves it. I keep reading all the It’s mine it’s mine posts, does anyone ever think of someone else anymore? Mute question. I guess sacrifice and an attitude of gratitude of already having a roof over your head is non existent as well. I pray that who ever you are that you have worked hard all your life and made other people your priority and now it is your turn and when you win that you are the kind of person who thinks someone else who has less than you do should have won.

  604. I CHALLENGE HGTV to design a NEW kind of house for a NEW kind of America. Enough of the McMansions! We love to see them but we don’t want to pay for them, maintain them, insure them, heat & cool them, and be house-poor paying taxes & mortgages on them. The economy has gone bust, and Americans everywhere are being forced to scale back their lifestyles. People need to start moving back into urban areas as the price of gasoline will surely rise again. We need to build real communities and neighborhoods again, where people aren’t isolated, and can connect with neighbors, watch each others kids & homes, and have a place where they “belong”.

Nobody wants ticky-tacky “builder bland” homes. I want efficient use of space with high end quality design. Show me an affordable “green” house for the average American that will hold up to the extreme weather in various parts of the country. Oklahoma need homes that can stand up to wildfires, tornadoes, ice storms, golf ball (softball) size hail, straight line 100 mph winds, and temps from 0 to 110. Design a house that can function without electricity and running water for a few days if you’re knocked off the grid involuntarily by a fire, hurricane or ice storm. A house that works in Oklahoma’s extremes would work in California, Colorado, Montana, Florida, Houston and Buffalo. Show me a new model for housing that will work in a rural tribal village or a reclaimed urban neighborhood. Focus on safety & sustainability while keeping it affordable for the average American household making an average 45K per year.

Get Creative! Look at historical styles that create safe, private spaces in high-population centers. Look at ancient Greek & Roman homes with high walls and interior courtyards, Pueblo Indian and Santa Fean styles with gated courtyards. Show me a style that can be built stand-alone, or grouped in a formation around a common “green” area that’s shared by residents, like a co-op. Show me a community area that can be fenced for privacy & security in reclaimed urban areas, landscaped with raised gardens, multi-use areas, recycling center, composting area, and a small community building that can be used by residents for large parties & double as a “safe house” in stormy parts of the country. Make it a huge contest between the teams with the best minds in interior design, architecture & landscaping today. Are you listening, HGTV? Lowes? Home Depot? Ikea?

  622. I am glad HGTV is going to instruct the USA public on green home building. The main problem I see as it not really serving as a great example of how to build green - being in Florida. As we all know they don’t have much of a winter, so a temperate climate would be more instructive since our issues are a lot tougher. It is much harder to heat and cool here in middle america so next time make the Green Home an example for the masses.

  625. I bet my son would love to have any house right now. About to be without a job, and I am currently using my pension check to help keep a roof over his head by helping pay his rent. If I win this house I will give it to him to live in if that is allowed. It would give me back my life to know he would have a place he could call his own.

  628. I love that your building this Greenhome in Port St. Lucie. My family has all moved to Port St. Lucie this winter 2008, and we are planning on looking for a home down there in the fall of 2009. Who knows, we might just win this one. Wouldn’t that be awesome! What a coincidence this home is in Port St. Lucie. Can’t wait to see the finished product. I know it would be perfect for our family..Karen Klaffka, Hamburg, New York

  629. Going green is easier than most people think –and our planet depends on it. I am so glad that hgtv shows this is possible. This Green Home sets an example of how to live responsibly. It is such a beautiful home, and I believe more homes will convert to green and be built in a green fashion. Thanks hgtv for setting a standard.

  630. To lee l. the nurse and single mom.

I am in the same boat. I live in a tiny apartment to save as much as I can. I dream of the day I can call the roof over my head “mine.” You have inspired me today! I sure would love to live in a green home, and even if I don’t win, I am shooting for making my new home as green as possible. I am so happy that you have your own home. How wonderful that must feel. God Bless You and yours!

    Belinda J on February 1, 2009 at 11:19 am
  631. Only one question. What’s wrong with Nixa MO?? We could use a green home here with our winter temps. I am 78, on ss income & I dream of a home with solar panels, air tight doors & windows etc. I recyle faithfully & get free compost for my efforts from the city of Nixa.I use the free compost gratefully in my veg/flower garden but could sure use a break with the utilities.Any one in our area would love to continue an on going blog with the rest of the world about the benifits of living in a green home in our midwest (low winter temps/high summer temps).Who knows it might influence more builders to go green around here. I know when I win the power ball I am going to build my green home. I need to go now, it’a Sat & I haven’t bought my ticket yet. Thanks for letting me vent,& again I say,THINK NIXA!

Everyone on the same floor, warm weather and beautiful area to live. My only change would be to do pocket doors for the jack and jill bath. When can we move it?

  645. Beautiful!!! The floor plan looks wonderful. I’ve never visited the area, although it looks wonderful, something for everyone. And the fact that it’s green is the icing on the cake!! One can dream, right?….

Margaret Moxley on February 3, 2009 at 6:34 pm
  646. They’re having a green expo in our area this weekend, and it’s all very exciting. We recycle (obsessively) and do what we can, but here in Texas the green building is hugely expensive, especially out in the country. We recently went from a 2 income family to 1, so we won’t be coming up with $ for any green changes soon, as we had hoped to do.
I guess the only solution is to win the green house in Florida so we can seriously go green!
Hooray for HGTV, way to go!

  653. You have no idea how happy it’s makes me to see our country become aware of what I have fought for for over 30 years, and that is the eco- we need to re invent our way of thinking, and stop being a throw away society. It does a heart good to see people like your selves, take the “bull by the horns” and build it to be more in tune with “Mother Nature. Keep up the great work. Even though we old folks will ever aquire such luxuries, there is hope that the younger generation will learn from our constant reminders of “GO GREEN”.

  659. I think a Green Home in Florida is a great idea! I live in Florida and I don’t think people are very mindful of their wasteful ways. If there were more positive examples of this effort in our area then I would hope people would begin making better choices themselves. We can’t let the big companies in these “communities” ruin our world by cutting costs using shotty designs and materials. My husband and I still live with my folks because we simply cannot afford to buy a house ourselves. We’ve looked around and the ones being built in our area are just not quality designs. It seems like they just want to fit as many homes in one area as possible. They all look the same. My father is a builder and he cannot get work because there is nowhere to build if you are using your own designs. It has to be the cookie cutter image! Needless to say, he only works in remodeling now. He hasn’t built a home in quite some time.

Christine Busch on February 9, 2009 at 3:04 am
  664. You always choose great locations. They all have meaning to me from sometime in my life and I could see myself living in most of those places. This one would allow us to neighbor of my husband’s brother and sister-in-law. I lived in FL for a year when I was a pre-teen and relive the feeling whenever I return. You and Linda create a beautifully designed and decorated house. A Green home will inevitably reduce these winter closed house health issues. It would be so wonderful to own a clean, green home and have my many family members visit all year long where the surfers, golfers, beach lovers. boaters and very warm blooded relatives will feel good every day of their stay!

Would hope there is some fishing fairly nearby as that is a very favorite for both my husband and I. We just came from visiting her and her family, after not seeing them for 3 years, and I promised her that somehow, someway, I would find a way for us to move to Florida to be closer to her. This house would be the PERFECT HOME and the PERFECT ANSWER to alot of prayers.

By going Green, you continue to motivate all of us to preserve environment and the future of the world. Keep up the great work!

  673. My parents retired from New York in the late 1970’s to Jensen Beach, right next door to Port St. Lucie, Stuart, Hutchinson Island, etc., otherwise I’d never have heard of this part of Florida. They’re gone now and due to some problems we haven’t been able to travel there for a while, but I can tell you it’s a wonderful area for the green home with beautiful beaches within walking distance and good people in the surrounding communities. My parents are now both buried in Jensen Beach..so it’s long past time to visit. My heart leaped when I heard the location chosen was Port St. Lucie and jumped again when I saw the floor plan of the Green Home. It’s perfect. Who wouldn’t be thrilled to live in this wonderful house?
Please folks..those of you who are complaining. If you don’t want to win or live in such an incredible prize, don’t write negative things about it. There are certainly enough of us who think it’s fabulous and are more than enjoying the dream of ‘Southern Nights’ (singing):)

  682. I was starting to wonder if you even knew that anything outside of Florida existed. thTn you picked one of the most expensive areas in California to put this year’s Dream Home. Of course, you had to go back to Florida after that. Get real folks! for most of us, if we did win any of hose houses, we couldn’t afford the taxes. There are a thousand places in California where you could have put the “Dream Home”, where you could have built the samehouse for half the price. I’m betting the same holds true for the ones in Florida too. Really disappointing.

I would love to win this Green Home for many reasons. (1) The midwest where I have lived for over 35 years is just way too cold! (2) Who in the world wouldn’t love to win this house?!! 701. We are praying that God will let us win this house. My husband is a retired Minister. He is 90 plus years of age and has been preaching for 72 years. I am 74 and I have had Cancer three times, open heart surgery and many other things. We need a place to live with my daughter and her husband. He is in the Army and has just returned from Irac. Then have two little girls and a little adopted son. They are so precious to want to take care of us. But as you can see we need a larger place for all of us. God Bless you for helping others.

  713. I already do what I can to help the environment, but with the green home I could even do better. That is if I could get my husband to move to Fl. I sure would like to win, but if I don’t I will be happy for who ever does. Rosemarie from Ga.

SHE HAS TWO SMALL SONS AND NO PLACE FOR THEM TO LIVE TOGETHER. WITH THIS HOME I COULD TAKE CARE OF THEM AND HER. WHAT A BLESSING FOR US ALL. THANK YOU HGTV.

  719. Finally TV comes to Port St. Lucie! Too bad they only showed Tradition and missed the real PSL. I liked how they showed West Palm and Orlando but left out the rest of the Treasure Coast.

  723. My god we need this house for my family there six of us living in a small 3 bd rm old house I sleep on the couch and my daughter has special needs I had to move in with family since I lost my job and then we lost our home. We had to leave everything behind only thing we have is what I could carry. As you can understand we don’t even have furniture pots or pans just clothes. we would be out on the streets if my family didn’t open their door for us everyday this place is get smaller and smaller and falling apart around us I repair what I can but for how long? I Pray, hope I win this house maybe by moving being in another state I can find another job and make a better life for my family.

  727. You have created a heavenly home. I would feel like I was in Heaven if I could live in it. Would love to have a place in which to care for my elderly mother in her final years.

Thanks for all the ways that you beautify the world.
