  1. It looks wonderful. The layout is very unique…I have never seen something like this before. I am very anxious to see what the whole house will look like when finished.

  2. I know is not at all relevant to the 2009 Dream home but I have been searching everywhere for the green apothecary style sofa table that sits behind the sofa in the living room right off of the kitchen in the 2008 Green Dream Home. Does anyone know who makes it? Thanks!

  3. Thanks for the plans.
Perhaps someone can explain why there is a door in the hall bathroom that exits onto the screened porch. The only other doors I see on the screened porch are the two doors that exit outside. Am I seeing it correctly?
Is it possible they will make every room accessible?

  4. This is a very unique floor plan. It appears as if the sitting room could easily be used as a 4th bedroom. I am curious about the artist rendering and the windows up top, I’m thinking that it must be a skylight rather than a room? I’m looking forward to seeing more of this HGTV Green Home. Thank you for giving us so much to dream about.

  5. I’m so happy, happy, happy! This is the floor plan I’ve waiting for. Thank you HGTV. Who designed it? When I come down from dancing on the ceiling, I’ll blog more.

  6. This layout looks amazing! I think it’s going to be very fresh and inviting to all those who visit the new winners!

  7. I love the plans, but is it really only 3 bedrooms? Are the childs bedroom and guest room real small? Could the sitting room be used for a bedroom?

Vickie on November 25, 2008 at 7:48 pm
  8. What a great looking floor plan. Especially like the screened in porch. I think this is going to be quite a green home.

  9. I love the house’s unusual design. It’s refreshing to see such an original design. I can’t wait for the chance to win this house!!!!

I think the door in the hall bath that has an exit to the screened porch is for convience,so if your outside you can go potty.I like that a lot!

  12. This really looks like a unique floor plan. How large are the bedrooms? can the sitting room be used as another bedroom? how about 1/2 bath for quests? Is there an upstairs? By the picture it looked like there could be rooms upstairs. I can’t wait for some interior pictures! Thanks HGTV.

Linda on November 26, 2008 at 8:56 pm
  13. I think the door from the hall bathroom is incase you have a pool outside you don’t have to track through the house to use the bathroom. Kind of cool. Also I would be using the sitting room as a bedroom because of the closet in it. I’d love to see what the back of the house looks like.

Dana on November 27, 2008 at 7:54 am
  14. Vickie** I’m not sure why they called it a sitting room. For it to be called a bedroom it has to have a closet and this does have a closet..so why not just call it a bedroom to begin with?? lol

    velvet350 on November 28, 2008 at 9:24 am
  15. This is wonderful! A floor plan conducive to a disabled person like myself…finally… THAT’S BEAUTIFUL AND OPEN AND ROMANTIC! WOW!

An Tradition Florida is an icon of planned community living… WOW!

  16. Is there a way to get to the upper level porch? I’m looking for a stairs…and hope a ladder is included.

The hall bath with a door leading outside is quite clever. How many of you heard as kids….”Who keeps going in and out of the house, we don’t want to cool the outdoors, too.” Velvet, didn’t you hear words like this?

    Trish212 on November 29, 2008 at 7:51 am
  17. Where’s the Garage? Is there a garage or carport for the cars to get out of the sun?
The door from the bathroom to the patio is neccessary here in Florida because many have a pool in the backyard and need access to the home for wet bathing beauties. Is the lounge the Florida room? How many Windows are there for natural light? To many questions to be excited yet!

Suzan on November 29, 2008 at 8:09 am
  18. AH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m so unbelievably excited!!!!!!! I think this green home is going to be exceptionally fantastic! My family and I are very eager for a closer look at the home. I have a good feeling about this house:)

  19. i realy lov ethe floor plans especially the master part!! but do all green/dream homes have 3 bedrooms?

veronkerz on November 30, 2008 at 12:54 pm
  20. Why do they always put the master bedroom right off the livingroom? I, for one, hate that idea. I want a quiet bedroom away from the noise of the household activity. This feature alone has ruined the plans to a lot of the Dream Homes for me.

CZA on November 30, 2008 at 2:01 pm
  21. Suzan, I was going to ask about the garage. Is it detached? If it’s on a corner, which corner? Guess we have more questions.

    Trish212 on November 30, 2008 at 5:28 pm
  22. Sorry Trish our house only had two doors..a front and a back. Heard parents say many things, but not that expression. :)
imo* It just looks like it has one too many exits so close together on the back.(the one from the living/dining room, which is great, the second, the hall bath and the third, the laundry/mud room.)
This floor plan is the best so far. I only hope they make the doorways wide enough and make enough room in those bathrooms for those that need it.

    velvet350 on November 30, 2008 at 7:22 pm
  23. You don’t think the bathrooms are large enough? I wonder why the sinks are on either side of tub? Other than that…and the garage question…I like the plan.

    Trish212 on December 1, 2008 at 12:03 pm
  24. why are some of you already looking at this house in negative ways?If i wanted so badly to win a house, Id be happy it had walls and a roof. Let alone all of the wonderfull things that you will be getting… Is the bathroom funtional = yes… isnt that what matters? And further more, im sure there is some logic to this. I think the designers should design, and the people hoping to be winners , should be gratful that there is something to win.

jenniferlynn on December 1, 2008 at 10:55 pm
  25. hey i was wanting to say this is prbley my favorite floorplan because it is more unique but i am wondering will there be a pool? because its been a while where we have seen a pool in a dream home and this would be the first pool at a green home. plus it would just add alot more options and thinkabout it a outdoor spa and pool would go really well with the layout of this house and in the back yard you could do alot around the pool possibly a out door bar and grill? just a thought =]

chris on December 2, 2008 at 8:06 am
  26. Guess my first post got lost in cyberspace, so I’ll try again. At last, the floor plan of my dreams. A beautiful, exciting ranch, daring and inovative. Love the large foyer with its ample closet. Love the open living, lounge and dining spaces. You could open up the dining table to accommodate a large group of guests. The master suite is grand. To the one wanting a more private master, surely your family and guests will have either retired or gone home. At least in my house they would.
Looks like a great kitchen. Hope there are stools facing the sink. Three more bedrooms if you count the sitting room, or the sitting room could be a media, library or hobby room. Love the mudroom with a door to the outside, maybe leading to a detached garage???? And the bath with the door leading to the screened porch…..anyone else thinking pool?? I don’t know if there is such a thing as a “green” pool, but if there is, I’m sure the Green Team will find it. Well, I’ve gotta say ONE BIG THANK YOU to Jack, the Green Team and HGTV. Good luck to all dreamers.

Katydid on December 2, 2008 at 3:37 pm
  27. Are there ceiling fans? I remember a “green” episode of “Designed to Sell” where they exchanged a ceiling fan for a chandelier (they always do this, they HATE ceiling fans). This despite the fact that ceiling fans help reduce a/c usage! That’s GREEN.

ApeyK on December 24, 2008 at 8:54 am
  34. While the design is unique, I dislike this floor plan the most out of all the Dream homes. It looks like it’s has no 2nd floor. No privacy! Bedrooms should be on a different floor for a couple of reasons: children’s bedroom should not be on the 1st floor, master bedroom next to the living room??? The guest bedroom should be closest to the living room and away from the rest of the household’s private quarters. The room with the most privacy is the laundry room (which is at the end of house)?!!! This is crazy. Please always design a home with at least 2 levels, for privacy sake (and Safety, for children).

  36. I was looking at the plans and don’t see anything about a garage. Is there a garage with the Green Home? It would come in handy if a hurricane comes through this area again.

  37. I ABSOLUTLEY LOVE THE NEW LAYOUT! I’M ALSO VERY HAPPY TO SEE HGTV ADDING GREEN HOMES TO THE GIVEAWAYS! I’VE BEEN GOING ORGANIC FOR 6 YEARS NOW AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MAKES! I’VE ALSO WENT GREEN WITH ALL MY CLEANING & BODY PRODUCTS AND IT REALLY DOES CHANGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT AND MAKE YOU FEEL SO MUCH BETTER. PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE WHAT ALL THAT STUFF DOES TO YOUR BODY UNTIL YOU STOP USING IT! ANYWAY THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS ON A JOB WELL DONE!

  38. Hi! Just wanted to say I love the houseplan your looking at doing. I would like to make one suggestion though. The child room shared with guest bathroom..I wouldn’t recommend. Suggestion would be wall off between the two leave the entrance from the hall that closet not needed or could be used in the bathroom. That would have opened up the bathroom with more space. Another suggestion is turn the sitting room into a media/game room. Who uses sitting rooms anymore. Ocean theme would be neat on the coast. Can’t wait to see it finished!

  39. Love the floor plan. I know it would look grate on my 40 acres. Have you considerd using wind turbins to generate eletric? I watch your show as aften as i can, I also have a passion for desigening. When people walk into my home i always got a wow how did you do that? HGTV If your looking for a fresh new designer to joine your team team look me up.

  40. I must ssy, I am really in love and my style is Victorian! What is the kind-of coupula on top? Looks much better that my “organic” garden, destroyed by bugs and mold (black spot). I have a question……where is the Green pool? All the home buying and selling programs on HGTV and DIY state one must have a pool to expect to sell or have a good amount of equity in their home.

Teresa Sirmon on January 2, 2009 at 4:50 pm
  41. This is really an unusual design, but I like it. The floor plan is easily accessible by all since it is one level.

  42. I love the floor plan too, ditto about the garage, mud room with exterior door makes wonderful sense…for gardening, lawn care, swiming?,fishing, cycling whatever else… Love the spanish style, ever thought of doing a fence with dark iorn type gates?

Fences make good neighbors, keeps my “kids & pet(s)” in my yard and out of yours, or the street. Just a thought….

  45. Why is not HGTV letting the online community do the whole concept?
Here is a hint for anyone from HGTV:
    1. Do what DIY did with Blog Home, create a concept home developed by the user community, not fancy designers. Make a complete series of the entire production of the home from start to give away. Have all the HGTV designers, builders, landscapers—everyone partake in the building of the home, even have the cooks create meals for the crews on the job site! This could keep HGTV online for the entire build time and have NO re-runs! Also keeps people interest in something that they may of help create!
I loved Blog Home, maybe it is time for HGTV to listen to the users, we could design a great home, give some restrictions, like price & Sf, let us choose where it would be built, also based on low taxes, utility costs etc. Let us design every aspect of the house, from the foundation up, make it GREEN! Bring in LEED people to make suggestions in materials to use. This could really be a knock out series that would last all year long!
So IF anybody from HGTV is actually watching this post/board, contact me, I have another 100 ideas on this.

  46. I really like the open floor plan. Having lived in many houses, the separation of the master suite from the other bedrooms is also a plus. I have lived in Key West, Fort Myers and Panama City, the screen porch will be extremely important in enjoying the outdoor living. I look forward to retiring there when my teaching career is over, better yet I could move my teaching career there!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. I love the floor plan but it would be nice if there was a room for a teenage girl. most of the dream homes have had a kids room but it was for a boy and the person that won might not have a little boy so it would be nice to have a room that anyone could enjoy. it would also be nice to have a guest room with a bathroom and huge closet. that could work too:-) Thanks!

  50. Wow! This a super plan with a great location. Screened porch, Deliciously inviting/relaxing. Excited to see the color schemes and style that will dress this lovely Beach Lady. Thanks for sharing the news.

    Keep up the great work

Good Luck to me, and also to everyone else.

  52. Very nice design at that I can see.
Someone mentioned a laundry and mudroom but I don’t see one on the floor plan on this page.
I like the open flow of the house, I also am disabled and I wonder about the doorways, hallways and bathrooms being wide enough for wheelchair access and mobility. though it seems shy on bedrooms and espeically storage areas.
But it is an interesting design, be fun to landscape. Hope you build it on a acreage. It would be awesome with trees, fountains, waterways and ponds to go along with the gardens and lawn.

Di Ann K on January 3, 2009 at 5:43 pm
  53. While I agree the floorplan is interesting, there are still too many unanswered questions for me to get too excited yet. Here goes (and don’t shoot the messenger!): 1) window size and placement–are they operable; is there good cross-ventilaton? That way, you can reduce the use of AC, which is green to me; 2) ceiling fans–again, to reduce use of AC; yes, I know most HGTV designers don’t like them, but they are very practical and I wouldn’t live in FL again without them in most every room; 3) someone else commented on universal design, but unless the garage is attached and has barrier-free access from the house, it’s not truly universal….also, elderly folks and single females would probably not want a detached garage for safety reasons. Just a few thoughts from someone who lived in FL for 25 years…my FL dream green home would have 9 foot ceilings to accommodate those ceiling fans; lot of porch space, with deep overhangs; lots of windows for cross-ventilation; and, if possible, siting the house on the lot to take advantage of prevailing breezes. Those ideas, incorporated with all the green features that HGTV puts into the home — now THAT would be exciting for me!

  56. I like the floor plan and especially the fact that it seems to be wheelchair accessible since it is one level. Having a child in a wheelchair makes this really a “dream home”. If I recall all the dream homes have steps leading into them making them not accessible by wheelchairs. Would accessibility ever be a consideration?

Rich on January 4, 2009 at 12:10 am
  57. It a great looking house and I would love to win it for me and my sister who really needs a house that is health because she just had a mold promblem in here house. I think the whole house is really neat looking

  58. All your homes are beautiful but this is the first that I can see us living in. Plenty of room for my three growing autistic sons. We live in Hawaii now which is too far from grandma who happens to live in St. Lucie West! I’ve got a feeling about this one.

Ralph Michaelis on January 4, 2009 at 2:09 am
  59. I love the one story floor plan. In fact, it mildly resembles my home. My only concern is the master bedroom opening off the public area of the home. My husband and I were surprised at how this impacted our privacy. The noise from children playing and watching TV flows right into the master bedroom. I am eager to see how the interior designer deals with this issue.

Tami on January 4, 2009 at 3:02 am
  60. The floor plan is awesome and looks like it would be very user friendly for people with disabilities, the way every area is open and accessible. I can’t wait to start trying to win this amazing home.

  62. Love the layout for this house – not a square box – has an interesting style. Just perfect for my husband and me, who are retired. Love Port St. Lucie area. Also have a daughter and her twins who live in nearby West Palm Beach. Would love to retire in the 2009 green house. Am keeping my fingers crossed!!!

Shirley Tyminski on January 4, 2009 at 7:06 am
  63. Well the design is unusual especially the offset corners but I think it will be interesting when it is finished. Not sure how many square feet it will be as I am soem what new to this site area. Although I do like the open area, when dining I think the dining room should have some privacy from the foyer and living area. As we like to entertain alot both my wife and I enjoy a seperate area for dining and then retreat to another sitting area without disturbing other people that might still want to stay in the dining area. Many of the new homes all have open concepts except this one has an unusual angle to it and that is the only thing that is different then any other home in PSL. Hope the interior design will change that as right now it will be a make it or break it deal to mak the HGTV home different from any other home that has been built in the past several years in Florida.

Mario on January 4, 2009 at 9:02 am

  65. First of all I think the floor plan looks wonderful and i can wait to see more. One question i have is, are you going to have more than one bedroom for the children? And I think at least one year I would like to see something a little more mature for the bedrooms. I feel like the children’s room is for a 6 year old, not as much for a teenager. Over all I really enjoy the layout and can’t wait to see the construction happen, it seems exciting!:)

    Radu S on January 4, 2009 at 11:53 am
  69. I can’t understand why people who design houses never do a mental walk thru, with groceries in hand, from the garage or carport to the kitchen. If they did this, they would realize the kitchen needs to be near the homeowners entry point. It looks like a wonderful house but I wouldn’t want to come in with groceries from one side of the house only to travel to the other side of the house to kitchen. This concept can be said for any room in the house. ex: laundry room near the bedrooms, mudroom near the garage.

Vickie on January 4, 2009 at 1:19 pm
  70. A Florida home with a closet in the foyer! What a great idea! Up north we put winter coats in them, but in FL they tend to be nonexistent. A closet near the door is always useful. Tradition looks like a great place to live, too.

Kathryn on January 4, 2009 at 1:32 pm
  71. just because it is on one level does not mean it is accesible! Whoever said that is really kind of outta touch with what it is like to be disabled or even what it is like to be remotely challenged at all. I just wish you all would have to be in a wc for a day when you are designing houses and apartments. then you would know what it is like to have to be in one and how it is to have to reach for a glass or to have to go to the bathroom with out any help. Yes and then there are the times you have to just plain get through a doorway…try it with a wheelchair when the door is only big enough for a person and your chair is way too big. what do you do, you crawl. now isn’t that a pretty sight. Getting down on all fours and crawling like a dog in your own house. It makes you feel good. Even better is when you have to go to the rest room really bad, I mean we all have had to do that right, well try that with a bathroom door that is half the size of a wc and you have to get down and pull yourself across the floor or yell for someone or worst of all WAIT FOR SOMEONW TO HELP YOU.
So just because ONE LEVEL ACCESSIBILITY SOUNDS SO GOOD, well let me re-iterate, it is not any good unless it is well planned out with all the accessibilities that go with it, wide doorways, lowering countertops and cabinets, doors with flipper handles instead of round , common sense is all it takes to make it accessible to all. But to insure accesibility to all, Mr designer, get in a wheelchair and try to get around in your design…see how far you get.ok
    thanks

Since I am in a wheelchair, every thing on one level is just great.

wanda on January 4, 2009 at 4:41 pm
  75. This was definitely designed by someone without small children (or sneaking out teens!). Why would the master be so far from the kids? If they have a nightmare, they have to run through another to get to their safety.

Is it really environmentally friendly to build so near a coast? Especially with all the endangered species Florida has. It just feels like it is for show, not for the environment.

  78. I LOVE IT! I don’t see anything i’d change. If I won it I think I could at least put in ceiling fans if I wanted them. I mean after the house would be free. I for one would be grateful for anything that I won.
I love the screen porch with access to the hall bath, and the living room, plus it has two outside doors giving access to the yard, and/or pool. If it doesn’t come with a pool so what? Do you have one where you live now? With EVERYTHING else free….build one yourself!
I for one would LOVE to just win the house!

Glenda W. Hurst on January 4, 2009 at 7:13 pm
  79. The hall bath will be used for guest, but when there is
going to be a larger group say for the Christmas Holidays,
someone will have to use the master bath. I for one would not
want anyone going through the master closet to get to the master
bath. Make all doors min. 3′ wide or pocket slide for accessibility.
There are no widows indicated in the children’s bedroom or the
sitting room. How about windows in the master bedroom on the
    right side wall?

Move the master bedroom door to the right next to the exterior wall.
The sitting and children’s bedroom appears small. Is there another
children’s bedroom on the other side of the children’s bath?
How does the laundry room work with the rear entrance and
the garage. How about making the children’s bedroom closets bigger.
But, if this is a second home, the suggestions made would
not be necessary. The screened porch could
be reduced and have just a covered area
    for cooking, etc.

  81. OMG, I love it. For all of you that want ceiling fans, the 4th BR (make it whatever you want), more doors, a pool and garage – I’ll take it just like it is. For a free home, who’s complaining? I love it all and I LIKE THE MBR being private and next to the LR doesn’t bother me at all.

  82. It is really cool!
You designed a house that is exactly what I would have designed for my family. It’s fate, we were meant to win!
It also has a bathroom with direct access to fresh air…woot!!

  84. The layout appears very open, the square footage of the house is not stated. How high are the ceilings going to be? How big is the lot? I like the idea of a porch, very relaxing and inviting.

  85. I think it is wonderful that Jack and the HGTV team is able to make many families dreams come true! Building these beautiful HGTV DREAM HOME each year is truly a blessing for those lucky winners i wish to have the luck myself of winning this year wonderful home. It would certainly be a blessing for my family.

  89. I like the layout, the Fl lifestyle is geared to relaxation, entertaining and making the most out of your living space. My suggestions would be to add pocket sliding doors to the Master bedroom and the Dining room to go out onto the porch – that way the doors will slide into the wall and you open up your lving area to include the porch and a green pool (salt water) would be fabulous also….used to live in Pt St Lucie, trying to win this so we can move back!!!

I love this house! When I win it if it doesn’t have ceiling fans i’ll find a way to add them myself.

I am an over zealous watcher of the HGTV Channel, and would like very much to have an address, where I can write to, or maybe a number, for me to call and speak to someone about a home I recently purchased and a piece of property I purchased over 10years ago in Florida,Port La Belle to be exact. Please contact me.

  92. My husband and I cruised by the green home yesterday. It is coming along nicely. It looks absolutely beautiful. It does seem a little smaller in person, but still awesome! Tradition is the nicest area to live in in PSL. If we don’t win the green home, we would still love to move to Tradition.

  95. It looks like the designer forgot the 1st rule of conservation design. If you are truly going to build a home that conserved on building material it would be a square home since a square saves the most on cost and material saving for a design. The home should be directed at an angle to the south to take max. use of the sun with the proper overhangs. Homes can be easily built with energy saving design. These are all things we were doing back in the 70’s when there was an energy scare back then. We were using geothermal heating and brick floors and burming the homes. Why are the designers not using these tried and true techniques? A true designer can make a masterpiece out of a box. The main test is what can be done inexpensively so you can get a return on the investment. A lot of today’s green designs will never pay for themselves. The trick is to do it in a way that the average consumer can afford the initial cost, or at least get a return on there money. Maybe this is not the feel good that everyone wants but lets get real and look at affordability. People not being financially responsible got this country into this mess and going green at any expense is not responsible.

    Thank you!

Robin Vandenbroeck on January 6, 2009 at 6:25 am
  98. Interesting layout. I would prefer a door from the master bedroom allowing access directly onto the screened in porch.

As others have commented, it will be nice to see what the square footage is, what the windows look like, how the living room and lounge are as far as ceiling height and type of appliances.

I live in the Central NY area where the snow and cold keep us inside on many days. The HGTV homes always add a little joy to the cold winter months giving us something to look forward to. It would be great to win a home in Port St. Lucie where cold winters could be a thing of the past.

Keep up the good work and the fantastic contests.

Just Me on January 6, 2009 at 9:21 am
  99. I have to agree with Tucker on his/her comment on January 5, 2009 at 9:37 pm.
I have designed my own “Great Room” house facing east to get that morning sun with the rear of the house shaded on the west side for afternoon cooling.Angles always loose valuable living space and are also hard to decorate. This house looks like a typical man designed. Did any body consult a lady about this. The sitting room should be “adjacent” to the Master Bedroom. Hall ways are never good if they can be minimize. What-no window in the kitchen? Ok ladies-what do you think.

Leo Tresselle on January 6, 2009 at 1:13 pm
  100. You have done it again. What a fantastic floor plan. Love the way that the dinning room flows out on to the screened porch.

  101. Absolutely love this layout and everything about this fantastic home….as a eco friendly participant and seriously involved in anything to help this planet, I am thrilled to see the second Green Home Sweepstakes. This gives so many people the opportunity to have their dreams come true. I belong to Robert Redfords community of concerned citizens for improving this environment and the reason I worked so hard for the election of President Obama is because I truly believe he cares about this world and will do all in his power to change this problem we are now enduring and passing on to future generations….Thank you for your contribution to building another Green Home!

    Linda M on January 6, 2009 at 5:00 pm
  102. Well we can pray Obama truley cares! He has alot to prove with very little experience unlike our HGTV pros that are doing something NOW to make a better more efficient world. I can’t believe all the negative comments. ITS GREAT!!! WOOHOO! Florida or BUST!!

  103. This looks like a terrific home. Very open and will accomidate those of us who are handicapped and require canes, walkers or wheelchairs to get around. I’m very impressed and excited to see the finished product. Great job once again HGTV designers, builders and all who are involved in these wonderful homes.

  107. Beautiful but can all the koolade drinkers out there please stop the Qbama references. He had nothing to do with the great design or construction of this house.

    Don S. on January 7, 2009 at 7:47 am
  108. I like the open appearance of the interior. I question why a home with what appears to be large square footage only has two bedrooms. The master bedroom, bath and closet have one entrance, straight through. Why is the child’s room on the other side of the house? I live in a small home in Ohio, and I utilize every bit of space I can. I guess I thought a green home not only was good for the environment but was also not wasteful.

Barbara Eaglin on January 7, 2009 at 7:56 am
  109. You have to walk through the master closet to get to the master bathroom?!?! Also looks like a lot of wasted space; house to lot size.

Peter on January 7, 2009 at 1:37 pm
  110. Is there a reasonable explanation why none of the bedrooms appear to have windows. A window should be clearly visible on a blueprint/architectural drawing.
I hate being the voice of doubt, but I don’t think this design is truly special. Why does the large window in the master bedroom face the street and not the private area at the back? Why is there no access from the master to the outside?
The only interesting design feature is the use of angles in the foyer, and these are not well executed to provide a sense of privacy from the main living area.
I’m somewhat disappointed that this is the best design they could come up with.

LGE on January 7, 2009 at 1:59 pm
  111. Ahhhhh , nothing like finger pointers that are critical to other’s, Obama is taking on the worse mess in US history….surviving it is all he has to prove…give the man a break!

I for one, will say that I would happily take ownership of this home just as it is, good grief, I can not fathom people being critical of a gift such as this…..much less being critical of the layout, decor or anything in it….I’ll take it just as it is….peace to all…..Linda M

    Linda M on January 7, 2009 at 2:52 pm
  112. Why can’t the designers come up with a Dream Home that’s spectacular, but is still what most people would consider a livable home — not some ackward design that would only fit the lifestyle of a very few. I would find that to have much more of a ‘Wow!’ factor than this whacked-out design. I wonder if the past winners all kept the houses or sold them — any know?

    Mary B. on January 7, 2009 at 3:07 pm
  113. I’m so glad that going green has increased so much in the passed years, this house looks beautiful! Can’t wait to start entering, but until then I’ll be working on my carbon footprint.

  114. Love the design of the home, hate the bigotry that manages to find its way to all aspects of our lives. I want to win this fabulous new home!

    Wanda Y on January 7, 2009 at 4:12 pm
  115. What are you thinking??? That is the ugliest design ever. I guess you have angles due to the lot size. There is NO CURB APPEAL. A small kitchen and a large lounge. I would swap those two. And I would NEVER put a GUEST bedroom NEXT to my Child’s bedroom. This is a poor design sorry.

Carole on January 7, 2009 at 5:42 pm
  116. Let’s disect this plan some. Change the kitchen to the lounge area. It has a beeter “angle” placement and you cound put a counter between the living room and the new kitchen site. In the old kitchen site you have an area to put in a large “PANTRY” and the laundry room across from the hall bath. I would change the “sitting room” to a 4th bedroom. After moving the laundry room as indicated above, I would make that area a playroom for kids or an office!! The Master closets and bath I would rearrange so one does NOT have to walk through a closet to get to the bathroom. Instead I would move the closet to one side of the room and have the bath moved out 4 feet off the screened porch wall, thus enlarging as well as accommodating style. Any spanish home should have a wainscot style tiled shower for authenticity. Also spanish style is masquelin, this plan is not that. The Master should have a sitting area, so take some space from the screened porch. And move the dining room onto the part of the screened porch with french style doors leading from the dining room as well as the master sitting room onto the screen porch. Move the screen porch out some to the end. The front “stoop” is ugly. Put a gazebo styled roof entry with brickwork posts. Sorry but this plan needed some direction. It is my opinion, follow it or not!

Carole on January 7, 2009 at 6:13 pm
  117. Pleeeze, why the Obama comments? Also, this is all about an HGTV home that’s given away, free, and yet some fault finders can’t wait to comment on what’s “wrong” with it.

I think it’s beautiful and the location is fantastic. It would be a blessing and honor to live in such a home. Congratulations HGTV, you’ve done good once again.

  121. Rather unconventional but the wide open floor plan should work very well. Dimensions would help visualize the end product. the ceiling height is particularly important to me in realizing the look which I believe the architect is trying to achieve.

Diego on January 8, 2009 at 8:39 am
  122. Hmmmm…I’ll have to wait to see the “real deal”…because the traffic plan doesn’t look that great to me. Also, I’m not so sure I would want the master bedroom off the living room.

Jo on January 8, 2009 at 12:19 pm
  123. I like this GH plan.

We are empty nesters. Having a MB away from the other guest bedrooms would be ideal. And….knowing family….there would definitely be guests.

I am looking forward to the new pics and video.

    Trish212 on January 8, 2009 at 3:53 pm
  124. I wish I had looked at the artist’s rendering of the GH. It shows more windows than the floor plan for those commentors who are concerned. This is why I am looking forward to seeing this home.

    Trish212 on January 8, 2009 at 3:56 pm
  125. Admittedly, I’m a Green Home neophyte, but I like the out-of-the-ordinary design of the ‘09 Green Home. My one critical comment would be the amount of hallway, but that’s just my personal issue. I’m one for as little hallway as possible by maximizing open space, and creating a comfortable yet practical floorplan for the most efficient traffic-flow pattern throughout the house.
From what I see at this point, a job well done, and a sweepstakes that will be fun to enter and WIN.

Theresa Prisby on January 8, 2009 at 7:02 pm
  127. not thrilled with the layout. odd angles cost more to accomadate and result in more scrap. Open is good, but I see a lot of wasted space.

grish on January 8, 2009 at 7:13 pm
  128. The layout is very appealing and I’m sure the access
points into the home were designed that way to establish built
    in security.

    Richard K on January 8, 2009 at 10:48 pm
  129. Why the comment “Pleeeze, why the Obama comments? What a sleezy comment.” To Linda Webber who made these comments about my comment is also entitled to her opinion.
Whatever an “Obama comment” is anyway.

I have to say your comments directed to my comments I made are inappropriate. It was not sleezy what I said, it was my opinion. That is what a Blog is about. Comments and Opinions. And they asked for them. I hope you win the home it suits you.

I’ve been through Port St. Lucie and thought it was beautiful. I love the innovative layout of the home. Can’t wait to see it. I’m sure it’s going to be awesome, you guys always do such a great job! When you don’t have someone visiting, you can close off the one side of the house.

Darlene on January 9, 2009 at 4:14 pm
  132. I think those who don’t like “walking through the closet to get to the master bathroom” will be pleasantly surprised once they see this realized. I suspect the “closet” will feel more like a walk through.
Here are the advantages of this arrangement:
    1) more windows in the bathroom (not in the closet where would fade clothes)
    2) good noise separation if a couple and one person sleeping, one person in the bathroom: shower/water noise less likley to disturb.

I’ve been in plenty of houses with similar arrangements and it feels quite natural.

SR on January 9, 2009 at 6:44 pm
  133. Will the hall bath only be wheelchair accessible from the screened porch; or are the doors all 36″ pocket doors for the 9 out of 10 of us that will be handicapped at some point in our lives? I agree with the negative comments about the garage, I found it disappointing in this year’s dream home. It should be attached and accessible with a ramp. I remember a wheelchair bound winner of the Dream Home. Has anyone asked his input on design? I do love the tower; will the windows open like a cupola? That would be the greenest.
I’m curious: there doesn’t appear to be a door from the master bedroom to the screened porch.

Mary Rene on January 9, 2009 at 8:01 pm
  134. I don’t understand the logic of walking through your master bedroom closet to the master bath? Could you flip those two? The rest of the layout is perfect.

  135. I’m excited to see the progress. To live in FLorida would be a dream … at least I know I would have family coming to visit. They always head to Calif. or Florida as my brother is a Disney fan. Not enough for them to do in Farmington NM. And it has been a long time since I have been scuba diving . . . so refresher course here I come; and as for my swim suit . . . gym here I go!!! Thank you for giving ordinary people HOPE and excitement as if we were already there. Good Job !

  136. It’s nice to see you trying unique layouts but I am very alarmed by the shared bathroom between Guest and Child’s bedroom. Sometimes guests are strangers and this is extremely unsafe for the children due to child molestors. Since no one comes out and admits to being one, its best to take measures that don’t put a child in vulnerable situations. Cut corners somewhere else, but not at the expense of protecting a child. Please keep bathrooms separate and do not place guest room next to a child/teen’s room. I agree with others that guest should be more separate from the main household members.

Catherine on January 10, 2009 at 1:07 am
  137. Unique design. It would be a “Dream” Green Home for me. I didn’t see many windows from floorplans. Look forward to seeing construction and hearing from the experts. I know they know what they’re doing and it will be awesome. Love the location…appears peaceful, quaint, fresh, and green!

Pamela on January 10, 2009 at 3:49 am
  138. Kitchen needs to be near the garage so it is easier to carry in groceries. Closets by the garage would be extremely helpful for outside gear and clothes. There should always be a way to go from the outside to a bathroom for shower or commode without tracking sand/dirt through the house.

Betty Hopkinsville, Ky on January 10, 2009 at 8:26 am
  139. What a unique design. I love it. This would be perfect for two young retirees like my husband and me. There seems to be plenty of room for the kids and grandkids when they come to visit. I would use the Sitting Room as a bedroom; notice the closet. Port St. Lucie sounds like a wonderful community. I’m looking forward to future Green Home updates and entering the sweepstakes. Thanks.

Patti on January 10, 2009 at 12:37 pm
  140. Kitchen looks rather small in comparison to the rest of the house, considering you have a sitting room and a lounge and a dining room AND a living room. I’d have to expand the kitchen into the lounge if I had the house, myself, and make a smaller bar. I think I’ll reserve my judgement until I see pictures.

    Victoria E. on January 10, 2009 at 12:57 pm
  141. Just because the house is green doesnt mean I’d want a cramped kitchen. I cook for a family at the holidays, and there might be more than just me in the kitchen. I dont want to trip over people when I’m working.

    Victoria E. on January 10, 2009 at 1:03 pm
  142. Winning such a great magnitude (LARGE HOME) would be Awesome! My only question would be in claiming this home – would I have to pay out of pocket to keep it? Not to mention the up-keep of the lawn & gardening. I have never won anything and would like to know and be prepared if I do win! Your response will be greatly appreciated.

  143. I am wondering where the storage is located in this home? Everyone has Christmas decorations, medical stuff, things they need to save and I never see any storage in any of the Green or Dream homes. Please take this into consideration when designing a home. Barrier free design and storage are two very important things to consider in the building and actual functioning of a home. Thank you!

  146. Love the single story layout of the new Green Home. Very unique design. I never could get used to the humidity in Florida, whenever I visited my father there. In keeping with the Green Home Motif, you should consider a mini-farm location next time. Raising one’s own food in a large garden area, having an orchard and keeping some food animals seems more green to me than having a house in a developement.

As a retiree, with a very large family (5 children of my own) (2 step-children) & a number of foster children coming to visit, Including 10 grandchildren collectively. Just a thought – have you considered Washington State as your “next” green project?? We are very into the green movement here in the beautiful Northwest!

I never cease to be amazed at what HGTV has been able to do with each of these extraordinary homes. Hats off to all those involved in these projects.

  165. Can anyone PLEASE answer – after winning this BEAUTIFUL Home, etc., would it be absolutely FREE? Or would one have to pay $$$ to offically claim it all? I am patiently awaiting a response. THANKS!

    M.Foster on January 14, 2009 at 7:20 pm
  166. M. Foster,
You will win the house for free but you must pay federal and state income tax on the value of the home and it will be at the highest rate.
To all of the others wanting to enter to win the house, that will be probably start in March like it did last year.
To the others wanting to change the floor plans, the foundation is already done and the walls are up by now. Maybe even the roof. They aren’t going to change the plans now. So it is what it is. If you want to vote on things go to DIY and you get to vote on lots of things there with their “cabin”.

I had to move back in with my parents.I have prayed and dreamed of owning a home for years.I have always worked and provided for my children but owning a home always seem to be out of my reach. The location of this home is mind blowing. It would be a dream come true for my children and I.Since I’m from North Carolina this is a ideal location for us.My pastor said that this year is a year of open doors.I’m looking forward to walking right through this one. Thanks HGTV for giving people this opportunity to dream!!!

Mary on January 17, 2009 at 2:52 pm
  175. The person(s) who plan the floor plan did a Good job!!!
I like the floor plan very much. I like the fact that there is a separation wall between the foyer and the living area.
The door from the bathroom to the patio will serve the future outdoors Kitchen and swimming pool area entertainment.

  176. I a very excited. I always consider any extra room-sitting room, guest room etc. to be the room where my second child would be. One teen, my daughter and a toddler, my son. If this were the case and the guest room would be one of their bedrooms, they would be very unhappy to know that their bathroom would join their rooms and make the rooms opened to eachother. Maybe it could just be attached to the larger room and a small bathroom could be added. Just a suggeston.

Deana on January 17, 2009 at 10:02 pm
  177. Maybe one more thing. Wouldn’t it be cool to kind of bring the outdoors in, with it being green and all, heck, I don’t know, maybe its been done before and I’m sure its too late for this house but if the center of the house, imagine L-shaped, had all glass surrounding an aviary or coy pond or arboretum. Maybe like a huge glass birdcage in the center of the house you could walk in and get away, like bringing a summer rainforest inside to escape to on a rainy, dreary day. Ok, I’m weird.

  190. There are three “boxes” covering text on the left side of my screen: Favorite Blogs, Categories, and Archives. In some cases the text is moved to the right to accomodate these boxes, but oftentimes you cannot read the text or view the videos because the boxes are covering the left portion of the window. Is it just my computer or does anyone else have this problem?

  193. I just have one question; Who, in their right mind, would put a stranger in a guest bedroom? And then have the audacity to worry about “child molesters”? My guest bedroom would house my grand-parents or an honored aunt. Someone the kids would be comfortable with. Sorry, but what are you so frightened of?

  195. I was so excited to see an HGTV Home Giveaway in California, however, while searching through your website I found your 2009 green home and although it is in Florida I found it to be (for me) even more desireable! I love the layout and even though there are only 3 bedrooms the sitting room could become a temporary bedroom for some of my grandchildren. Great job! I can’t wait to try my luck for this gorgeous home in a fantastic area! Not too much home for the average person or grandparents.

Nancy on February 3, 2009 at 2:56 pm
  196. The floor plan looks nice, except for the screened porch appears to be too much, maybe split the porch down the middle and placed next to the master bedroom and the other side make it a 4th bedroom/den w/french doors and a small concrete slab just outside the french door bedroom, just a suggestion.

Michele Jefferson on February 3, 2009 at 2:57 pm

  201. Great Floor plan!! Wide open spaces, and love that the master bedroom is on the other side from the other bedrooms. Bathroom access to the outside porch/deck is awesome for guests when your sitting outside. This is a truly unique idea. HGTV always comes up with the best!!

  202. Fantastic floor plan, especially for people like us who have almost grown kids. Looking at an empty nest within the next 5 years or so. There is room for visitors and yet plenty of privacy. It is especially appealing right now, since I am looking out the window at several inches of snow. Oh, to be where the palm trees grow.

  203. The floor plan has many flaws. The major one being the laundry room which is the furtherest distance from where the majority of the laundry will be created and restored; the master bedroom. Also access to the screened porch from the master bedroom should be a must. Finally closet and storage space is at a minimum. I’d still love to live in the home, but a few minor tweaks would be awesome.

  205. Fantastic floor plan in a very beautiful location where Winter is not as bad as it is in Fitchburg, MA where I live now. I would love to live in this home year round, to garden in a warmer zone than zone 5 and grow all the plants I can not grow now that are more tropical.

This dream home is the best, IMNSHO, because it *is* all on one floor. This way, my wheelchair can (hopefully) access all of the rooms, as opposed to only being able to access one floor, as is usual w/most of the dream homes (inclusive of all give-away’s)… For disabled parents, having kids on one floor is the height of safety, cuz we can quickly access them if trouble starts. Do you know how hard (& slow) it is to drag the wheelchair as one shimmies up the stairs on one’s butt, to get to the kiddies???

  209. This looks more like a movie star’s home, or just a vacation cottage. Disappointed that an office was not a part of this plan for computers — no need for built-ins or computer tables, as we just like plain kitchen tables for our computers, so we can arrange to get the best of the natural lights. There is no kitchen island. That is a downside. But dislike those islands that have sinks or stoves taking up space in the counter-top — better that those go along the wall, so grandma can stir up cookies with the grandchildren while they enjoy each other’s company. There is also a lack of room for one to have a sewing room, which has been mentioned, and the bedrooms need to be designed for all ages, not just a certain sex, and indeed, please do not have any gaudy colors which some designers think are so chick, but can make one sick to the stomach.
This would be suitable to have our grandchildren come visit us and enjoy being at the beaches. But agree that without the windows in the house being placed just right, and being able to be opened for good cross-ventilation, which makes living in a home very enjoyable, then the plans were not thought out very well. Let’s hope that there will be good ventilation
and good AC to make it enjoyable for anyone to own.

  214. I love the homes that HGTV builds, but… Could HGTV possibly consider building a home that has more than 2 spare bedrooms? Families, like my own, sometimes have more than just 1 or 2 children. :( It’s my ONLY complaint about these homes. Would much rather see 3 spare bedrooms than just 2. Interesting design, nonetheless. Very different….

  215. The sitting room could double as a guest bedroom by using a sofa bed. It has a closet and with proper furniture can be used as sitting or guest room Love the hall bath opening out to the screened porch. You (or the kids) don’t have to track through the house to go to the bathroom. Great floor plan.

My only positive is having the bathroom near the porch door.

  231. I lived in Fort Myers for 6 years. I love this floor plan and I hope there are plenty of windows to let light into lounge and living room. I am concerned about there not being an attached garage. In rainy season, you do not want to have to walk outside. This floor plan is unique and I wonder how it sits on the lot and if there will be space for a pool – a must in a hot, humid climate.

I will anxiously be watching the progress of such an exciting opportunity for the lucky family.

  234. I am thrilled by this floor plan. We have an angled home here where I live. I was fortunate enough to be the decorator for the original owner/builders. I loved the concept then; and I still love it now. It affords a lot more living space without sprawling out like a long corridor. It was easy to create a beautifully decorated envirenment in that home. I am positive that this one will be even better. By the way, I think this HGTV home has a far better layout than the one I decorated. This one has the home divided more evenly between the wings. Thus, it appears that moving from the main living areas to the far ends is a shorter distance. The one I decorated had all bedrooms on one long end. The living, dining, and kitchen were in a shorter wing. HGTV, you have done a terrific job of making the model home, that I have always dreamed of owning, even better.
By the way, for those who want a “four bedroom home” don’t let the “label” on the floor plan throw you. I would “label” that room as my craft room. I love to find new uses for old things which is the basis of recycling and “green”.

  235. Why can’t you ever think of Handicapped people in your designs. Mainly when you get into the bathrooms. It does not have to be severlly handicapped just bigger doors and some more room. The population is getting older and this is going to be a bigger issue. If most master bedrooms are going to be on the second floor how are you going to get there?

Charles Thomas on February 8, 2009 at 2:08 pm
  236. Love the flour plan but more closets are need in the guest room since the bath is extended out why not build a walk in closet and make the pantry in the kitchen larger. Just a thought cause i have closet problem at this fifty house i’m in .

Susie on February 8, 2009 at 6:46 pm
  237. It looks very nice, but I would like to have seating in my kitchen and skip the dining room. I know I’m unusual and most like a dining room, but I’d rather have the big kitchen and big eating areain there.

  238. As far as I am concerned my house is perfect the floor plan is spectacular. I have no concerns I am so looking forward to winning and moving in Thank You HGTV Thank You!

  239. You picked a beautiful area that offers all the conveniences and some great year-round weather. Love the plan in that it is unique -only one comment – there seems to be no access from the master suite to the porch. Good luck to me!

Margie on February 9, 2009 at 8:43 am
  240. It is a unique design very different. I would not like walking through my closet to get to my bathroom in the master sweet. Why is there a door going out of the hall bath to the screened in porch, I don’t see another door or am I missing something here. Does it have a garage or where is the driveway? I don’t see a door going into the kitchen area, do I have to walk through the whole house with my groceries? Some of us do have disabilities. Why do you have a foyer coming into the master sweet? Where are the windows located? You need to have it so you could get cross winds so you don’t always have to use air/conditioning. You really need to look ths plan over again or am I missing something. Maybe we can think about a home somewhere up on the norht east coast. I am not no movie star and i blelieve this is what these homes are being built for. We may win it but can we afford to move and live if your not a millionaire.

  241. I love the plan for the green house, it so hard to find good sized ranch homes, here in Colorado it costs a lot to heat a 2 story in the winter in the south it would cost more to cool a 2 story in the summer. The door off the patio to the bath makes sense, if you are on patio you don’t have to walk through the house. The only thing I would do is add a door (or window) from the master to the patio. Thanks for a GREAT PLAN I look forward to seeing more!!

Luanna on February 9, 2009 at 9:37 am
  242. I love that it is on one floor. As a senior citizen I do not enjoy climbing stairs.

  243. Looks like a lovely florida house. I think it lends itself to some special decorating. Would love to win it. After selling it to meet the prize taxes there would be plenty of money left to buy a less expenive home.

    m bell on February 9, 2009 at 3:14 pm
  244. Mostly I follow the DH09 blogs (good to see your name here Coop!) but I would really like to commend HGTV for building a 1-story house. Having the Master Bedroom on the main floor is a big attraction. I also agree with the bloggers who feel HGTV should consider a 4th bedroom in their future designs, maybe even an “in-law/granny suite”. Since the “sitting room” in this design does have a closet, I think it could qualify as a 4th bedroom.

stagemom on February 9, 2009 at 4:13 pm
  245. Love the design, but I will tweak it alittle if I am the one who wins it. I have a physical disability and will turn the master suite into a gym and put in an endless pool and small bathroom, changing room/steam room. And where the walk-in closet and master bath is located I will put in a small garage. But I am sure it will be hard to change a thing when I see the finished home. Hopefully the designs include wider doors for the handicapped. And will it be possible for the average income person to maintain this beautiful home and afford to keep it. Many of us out here would love to have a beautiful home, appreciate everything about it and the fact that it is a Green Home built by HGTV makes it worth that much more to us. But the heartbreak would come from winning it and then have it taken away because of the expense of owning such a lovely home. We all hope it is possible!!!

Kay on February 9, 2009 at 7:36 pm
  246. This is a fine design. After losing our home to robbery and arson, my family and I would love to have a real home again. Currently we live in a small, noisy and uncomfortable apartment. To whom this lovely abode goes, let them never take it for granted.

What a great floor plan and a beautiful place for this to be.

kari on February 9, 2009 at 10:19 pm
  248. Fabulous concept. I love it except for the Foyer. I would have put a garage there with a much smaller foyer opening to a porch next to the Lounge. As for the lounge, it would be fabulous as a library.

Laurel on February 9, 2009 at 11:25 pm
  249. I love this years Green Home! The plan is fantastic and the location is perfect. I share the concern about not seeing a garage and if there is enough space for a pool. The Florida climate will demand one. Also…is there a eco-friendly way of getting rid of fire ants? They are a constant problem in the South and would eventually move into the landscaping. That still will not deter me from entering everyday!!

    Gretchen Z on February 10, 2009 at 8:41 am
  250. I love that you didn’t put a bedroom off the kitchen. That is the worst thing to me to have to smell food all the time. I love the cross layout of the living room area and the size of the bedrooms and accessibility of the bathrooms.

  255. I love the house however I really wish there were 4 bedrooms. There is always company that will want to visit! Plus plus I wish there was a 1/2 bath for guests to use. Otherwise, it is perfect!

Linda on February 10, 2009 at 2:48 pm
  256. I would prefer to have some other arrangement
for entering the master bedroom. Something a
little more private so guests cannot see directly into the bedroom from the living/
dining room. Also the bathroom needs another
design. Either it should come first or split
the bathroom on one side and the closets on the other side.

Ann Siller on February 10, 2009 at 4:12 pm
  257. The Screened porch is a good idea and I really like how the master and living section of the house is at an angle, very unique!

  258. Will be following this house as it grows. Seems to be a great floor plan that can be adapated to every home owner. The sitting room has a closet so can be converted to another bedroom…there is a hall bathroom just outside the room. Not all people have the luxury of having bedrooms with private bathrooms anyway.

  261. I love the HGTV Green Home 2009! I think it is awesome!!! It has style. It is contemporary. It is adventure on the beach. I’m an artist, and I appreciate beautiful modern architecture. I would love to own this home because I not only appreciate the design, I admire location of the home and it’s surroundings. I would love to live near the ocean again. I want to listen to the sounds of the ocean. I want to pick up shells on the beach, and relax and watch the evening sunsets with my wife and children. I really miss the ocean, the year round sunshine, and the tropical foilage of paradise! My favorite movie is Cast Away with Tom Hanks!

Joseph Carothers on February 10, 2009 at 8:08 pm
  262. I like it, but I wish one wouldn’t have to walk through the closet to get to the master bath. And wouldn’t it be cool if the lounge area had big doors opening to the outside?

Jeannie on February 10, 2009 at 9:53 pm
  263. I love how the master bedroom has the huge walk-in closet. I sure need that with all the shoes I buy. Also the green aspect of the home is so nice. Having five teenagers..and knowing they are the future…I want them to be able to live in a cleaner place! I think what you guys are doing…by building green..is AWESOME!! Thanks!!

Michele Runge on February 11, 2009 at 12:24 am
  264. Do not like the floor plan at all. There is a lot of wasted space in the foyer with all the nooks and crannies. I thought it was a green home you do have to heat and cool this house. I also do not like the master off of the living room. Not very private in my opinion. I also do not like to walk through the closets to get to the master bath as I also do not like to walk through the bathroom to get to the closet. The kitchen looks small and I prefer the sink to be on an outside wall so that there is a window over the sink. Plus who put the bathroom next to the dining room, I can hear it now you sit down to a nice dinner with friends and can hear the toilet flush. Perfect. The location of the laundry room is also wrong. One has a long way to go to the laundry room if you are in the master bedroom. It would have been better to place the kitchen and dining room where the master suite is (get rid of the lounge area) and move the master to the back of the house where all the bedrooms would have been together making having the laundry room in that area more efficient. Having the kitchen on the end of the house would have allowed to have an attached garage which I noticed the house does not have. Ah architects you would think they would know better. They surely did not get any input from an Interior Designer.

Susan on February 11, 2009 at 12:47 am
  265. What a dream home!!! , And I’m dreaming my heart out for it .the foyer is wide and would make plenty room for potted plants and a water-fall, or maybe a beautiful aquarium. I really like the master bedroom it would be a wonderful get away from the great grandchildren that will be living with me. With the large closet and the large bath, it would be like my own little quit time space. I love this house. The kitchen is large enough for a helper that would want to join me in preparing a meal. The sitting room could be used for another bedroom to be used for one of the children. I love the screen porch. It would be a nice place to sit in the twi-light of the evening. I hope it would have a nice back yard, so I could have a good garden, and a place for the children to play. I love this house.
Thank you for building this beautiful house and giving us a chance to be a proud owner of it.

  266. I just looked at the floor plan and read some of the blogs and I agree with most of them. This is a very unique floor plan. I love having the master suite seperate from the other bedrooms. I would like to have seen an opening onto the screened porch from the master bedroom. I like the entrance/exit from the hall bath. Talk about convenience and great for kids! What about the garage? (That would be my husband’s favorite place.) Great job. Give us more!!!

    Jen D on February 11, 2009 at 9:52 am
  269. i love this floor plan with a few caveats – the laundry room is too removed from the center of the house – it’s in an inconvenient location and too far from the master; i wish there was a door w/glass onto the screen porch from the master and the sitting room; the door too the master directly from the living room is awkwardly in the center of a prominent wall; where are the windows in the rooms – they are not on the plans.

  270. I absolutely adore the asymetrical design of this year’s Green Home. It places a somewhat modern twist on the traditional. I loved the shoe storage in the foyer of last year’s Green Home…I hope you will consider it for this one as well. Keep up the good work and have fun!

Carin on February 11, 2009 at 10:24 am
  271. The plan looks easy to live in. I did not see the garage. We are currently in Port St. Lucie, can you tell me where the site location is. Is it near the ocean?

Dotti on February 11, 2009 at 1:38 pm
  273. I love the basic design, but like a few other posters have to agree on some points!
The master bathroom would be better situated between the closet and the master bedroom – how often are you in the closet as opposed to the bathroom? Just being practical! I do love the sitting room but probably would want that as my office as I am an at-home MT, what a great way to work while looking outside! I can really picture myself retiring to Florida in a home like this! Much better than these cold PA winters!

    JOYCE W on February 11, 2009 at 5:18 pm
  276. wow- I think the layout is really stupid. Not only is the master bedroom right by the livingroom but a room for kids behind the kitchen? You’ll never cook anything again without waking your kids. I also hate it not being near the parent’s room…I’m all about green materials, etc. but is it too ungreen to have a basement?

Seriously, was wondering where I could find out exactly all of the “green” options are listed. Also, not that its needed that much in Florida, but has anyone thought about solar or other heating as an option?

  283. I love the concept of the layout of the home, the design of the house, from the foundation up, but you do not or I have not found how you all are building it. Being from the South Louisiana we have to look at construction methods to see what improvement you all designed for hurricane wind protection. Have you plan other green in the construction?

  284. We who really NEED to live somewhere else can only pray that they could win ANY house. I would be thrilled and would be an answer to many prayers to win this beautiful house.
I can only hope that everyone who had all the negative comments won’t be entering so that someone deserving of such a luxury as this will win. I’m hoping more of us are concerned more about “going green” than we are about a doorway, closet, only two bathrooms (most of us could be so lucky), a garage, or pool. Since I have neither of the last three; I’m guessing many others like myself would be overjoyed with anything other than what we have. Good luck to all deserving persons out there. I hope who ever wins will make this house a HOME.

  297. It’s beautiful! Great open floor plan and just enough room. I can hardly wait to see the grounds and the finished project. Florida has always been one of my fav. places to visit and I love the ocean! I have been a single parent (and I mean no help) for 25 years, and have “worked it girl”, if you know what I mean. I hastily purchased my first home 2 years ago when my rental was sold out from under me. The home I purchased has soooooooo many issues, I don’t even know where to start or finish. I have a dozen projects going on at once, and now the market! I would love to win this gren home (as would everyone else, I’m guessing). It would be so peaceful, relaxing and aesthetically pleasing. I would also bring needed service to this community both in livelihood and volunteer work. Hurry! I can’t wait.

  298. This is a lovely floor plan. The open layout at the front of the house seems conducive to entertaining, which I think is a great aspect to consider when planning a house. I think that access to the screened porch from the master bedroom rather than the hall bath would be more appropriate. Is the “sitting room” a wise use of space? Perhaps it could serve as a guest bedroom…I rarely use my living room, never mind a sitting room (especially w/the large living room show in this plan).

Kendra on February 13, 2009 at 4:51 pm
  299. I love the layout – it’s quite unique! The sitting room will be wonderful either as an art/crafts room or as a office. In Florida it is often the practice to put a swimming pool inside of the covered porch, so access to the bathroom is a big plus. Many people have broken through outside walls of older homes to gain access to the bathroom.
I hope you are looking at the direction the house sits on the lot taking the sun placement into account. I live in Texas and my bedroom faces southwest and is always hotter than the remainder of the house.
I’m looking forward to seeing more of this home!

  300. How do I enter to WIN it? Does anyone know??

Deb on February 13, 2009 at 8:05 pm
  301. This floorplan truly shows what a Central/South Florida home really is! The living Room/Lounge and Dining Rooms are open to the kitchen. The hall bath with an exit to the outside, makes this a “Cabana Bath.” If a pool is installed, or if hosting an outdoor dinner party, the owners and their guests do not have to track through the house. Florida life is about kicking back and enjoying the wonderful climate. I can’t wait to see (or maybe win) the finished home!

Debbie Filippi on February 13, 2009 at 8:41 pm
  302. Having lived in Florida and loved the whole experience, I can honestly say this floor plan is exactly what every Floridian would want. It flows as smooth as cold water down your mouth on a hot summer day. I am wondering if they will use cool color themes or jazz it up with a punch of Latina citrus flavor.

Riene on February 13, 2009 at 9:12 pm
  303. I like that the kids room is attached to the guest room, where I would sleep. I would actually have my guest sleep in the master bedroom, where they could have privacy. I also like the solar panels, as this would help in my conservation efforts. :)

  304. I wish in the dream homes that they made it a little less expensive, for average people that want the house and can keep up with it. Because the times are rough for so many that would like the same option of getting a new home.I must say I love a lot of the homes, but taxes I am sure would be pretty high for everything in the end. this floorplan of the 2009 green home is one of the best ,the open floor plan is great and love the master on its own side of the house.

  306. The floor plan is unique as I’ve seen similar floor plans in prefabricated cubicle homes. I like the open room space which is great for entertaining guest and family. I would like to know why there is no access from the master bedroom to the screen porch. I look forward to seeing the finish green house. I visit the web site every day and it’s exciting.

  307. I LOVE the way one can walk into the home and the lounge is directly off to the left. What a great way to set up a party. It is an unusual set up, but the living spaces are far enough from the bedrooms to provide privacy and quiet. From the living room, you can go to the porch and relax. This is just wonderful!!!!!!!! Absolutely LOVE THIS.

  308. This house is the most coolest thing I have ever seen. I have been telling my husband that I am moving to Florida and this would be the greatest way to go,and with a dreamhouse. I have been to Port St Lucie and its great

  309. i agree with the blogger who suggested that you make a weekly tv show out of the construction process so we can see it go up from start to finish. would be most interesting!

  310. be sure to install lighted ceiling fans on the screened porch. then you not only have lighting but are able to blow away that hot, humid florida air. makes a huge difference! otherwise will be like a sauna most of the time…..

  311. I love this layout especially that its all on one level. I am disabled and and since I am new to the Green home and the Home designs for HGTV This is the first one level home I’ve seen. I love the location too. I’ve been to Florida once and the climate was wonderful especially with my breathing problems I have. You guys are doing a great job my mom watches HGTV every day, I don’t have cable TV so she tells me all about it. God Bless and good luck with the future building..

  312. Have your ever considered making this home handicap accessible? We have a daughter that will some day be in a wheelchair, and roll-in showers will be a must. The open layout of the living room/dining/kitchen are a good beginning of accessibility.

Patty on February 14, 2009 at 8:57 pm
  313. For years I’ve wondered why the laundry is always in or near
the kitchen or in the garage, made no sense to me when all the laundry is for the bedrooms or bathrooms…carrying it that far was a ridiculous layout, finally someone is thinking .

maryb on February 15, 2009 at 2:17 am
  314. We have a large family (sometimes up to 30) who like to get together for casual meals and holidays. I find the floor plan appealing because the lounge and screen porch are situated in close enough proximity to the established dining area as to allow for overflow dining seating. Obviously, the lounge, living room and screen porch also provide lots of connected space for “hanging out” once the meal has ended. Nothing beats a home with rooms designed to serve more than one function!

  315. Beautiful home in a beautiful location.

Just curious to know if there is enough space in the back yard to add a pool if the winner chooses to do so later on?

Any house design is going to get raves and critiques…we’re all come from different situations, backgrounds, needs and wants. No house design will be perfect for everyone! If you see “flaws” you wouldn’t care to live with, don’t enter the contest, lol.

For those that enter – good luck and stay blessed :) Thanks HGTV, it’s exciting to see the house coming together…

  318. Lovely floor plan, except for my personal use, the laundry room at farthest end of the home from master bedroom and bath, and master bedroom closet, I think, would be better placed along side bedroom rather than between bed and bath.

  324. I, for one, “get” and LOVE the hall bathroom access to the enclosed porch, as should anyone who either a) has children, or b) entertains outdoors, ought to do.
    For others, imagine this scenario:
It’s your child’s birthday, and you’re planning an outdoor party to celebrate. Do you really want a dozen or so little celebrants with their sticky faces and grubby fingers tracking through your newly cleaned living quarters to the bathroom every five minutes? (based upon estimated bathroom habits of five-year-olds in a new location, being served copious quantities of punch or pop!)
Alternatively, host that party for “all my rowdy friends” and substitute beer & barbeque sauce for punch and cake!
    Any questions? Thought not! lol

  325. I love the Sonoma home and everything about it you have thought of everything in construction, landscaping, design, the placement of the home to the oak tree, the way I will be able to look out the master bath to see the most beautiful features, positive thinking. This home is my favorite, love it love it.

  329. I love the “Green” but the floor plan does not work for a family especially those with young children or teenagers…..Is the designer childless? That could explain why the child’s room is too close to the kitchen/laundry area and too far away in an emergency or in case of illness. Very poor planning but I’m sure 2010 will be better built and take into consideration (all familiy types). Good Luck!

  336. I am very excited about the outside access to the bathroom. Every home with children should have so, even more so with water, sand, and dirt near! My first thought about the plan was that I did not see a washer/dryer units in the master bath. Hauling master room laundry all the way to the other end of the home just does not make a lot of sense. Either the laundry room should be central near the kitchen area or there should be two units, one on each end. Both those with or without physical disabilities would like that. I know I would, and I have hauled a lot of laundry in my life. :-)

Johnne on February 16, 2009 at 12:21 pm
  337. I hate the layout. As a parent, I would probably use the guest room as a master bedroom. My first choice would be having the guest room switched with the master suite.

  340. I find most of your comments very interesting. For those who wish to win, GOOD LUCK (I really mean it). It’s awesome to see people who would consider this a blessing. For those who have negative/critical comments or think they could do it better, GO AHEAD but don’t complain about a giveaway. In regards to the master bathroom, my master bath is pass my walk-in closets but there are doors to the closet and when I’m getting dress, if I don’t have to use the bathroom it’s great to be able to go directly into my closet. I pray that all of you who need handicap accessibility will be happy. I do understand the need for a more handicap environment, however, if you are one of the blessed people who win this home. MAKE THE CHANGE YOURSELF!! I’m sure there would be some type of goverment or non-profit organization that would be willing to assist in making your lives a little easier.

God Bless you ALL. Let’s start being greatful for companies/organizations that are willing to give instead of just take.

    HAVE A GREAT DAY EVERYONE!!

  344. So all the photos look great, I’m lovin’ the layout and Green friendly materials they’re using; especially the solar water heaters and spray foam to insulate the house! Insulation is so key to an air tight house, ’cause who wants the AC running all summer or winter. I’m looking forward to the next set of photos to see all the progress they’re making on this forward thinking, modern Green Home!

Mari on February 17, 2009 at 7:22 pm
  347. I too have problems with the master bedroom being directly off the Living area. I’d have to keep that door shut at all times! And it would keep me busy running from one end of the house to the other carrying my laundry. Maybe they could slip in an extra space for a stackable washer/dryer in the master bath area to save me some steps!

Ten years ago I wrote to HGTV with a suggestion that they request a donation ($1) per entry to be given to Habitat for Humanity in the state the house is located. Can you imagine what good could be done with all those donations? Millions at a time!!! Something to think about!

  352. This is Florida….why a coat closet?
DH said it looks like 2 mobile homes crashed into each other.
I will not go that far, but it seems like a lot of wasted space in the living area and very small bedrooms. A garage or carport is also a necessity also to get your car out of the sun.

George Aichele on February 19, 2009 at 4:01 am
  357. Hi, I was wondering why is it that all the homes that are built whether it be a DREAM HOME OR A GREEN HOME have only 3 bedrooms? You have the parents, and 2 children rooms, and a small study or sitting room. What is the square footage of the house? It doesn’t appear to be that large with only 3 bedrooms and an additional small room. How large is the lot size? Is their any HOA dues to be paid on this property location? Where is the garage and why do you offer only 2 car. Three would be beneficial for 2 cars and or a home gym – craft room – additional storage as to not encompass the 2 car garage with bikes and such. LOVE THE LOCATION – House has an unusual design. As with the other person who commented – why does the Master Bedroom have to be right off the living room. Doesn’t feel quite right…
Thank you for taking my comment. Was just wondering and or lest say “DREAMING” :)

  359. After carefully studying the floorplan, I don’t see what I would expect. The kithen is where the heart is and I see no room for gathering. Hall full bath that also serves the porch is strange. I see the spare room could be a bedroom, so therefore needs a full bath but…. Would rather see 3 bedrooms, each with full bath and an extra door to hall from one of bedroom’s bath.

  363. Interesting layout. There is still some tweeking left to do. Slider door from porch to sitting room would be nice. High windows for light in Master to porch area. Fireplace in LR? 367. I LOVE the foyer then—the openness of the floorplan. Great way to live nowadays. Also, love the Jack and Jill bathroom. Great for kids. The only thing I would change in the plans is the location of the sink in the hall bath. Seems to me the sink would be better located close to the toilet and the linen closet across from the shower. I DO love that the bathroom has outside access. Kids sometimes need to run in and use the restroom. Great they don’t have to tromp through the house wet/dirty, etc just to use the restroom…. : ) Can’t wait to see the finished product.

  369. I think that the floor plan needs a bit of correcting. The way it is at present it is OK, and certainly “different,” but not as functional as it could be.

The Laundry Room needs to be closer to the Kitchen – the designated “working space” because in the current plan it’s far away from there. Also, I would reverse the placement of the child’s bedroom and put it where the current Laundry Room is, _AND make the 2 bedrooms larger. Kids do eventually grow up and need more space than the typical kid’s rooms that builders build as a norm.

How cool would it be if everyone could and wouId live in a ‘green’ home. I think the floor plan is unique, and I am glad that the designing team is sharing with us a video and pictures as it is being built (which include some great tips and ideas for the rest of us to also implement, when we can.) Good luck to the winner and thank-you HGTV and all who are working on the house!

  373. I just got back from Sonoma and toured the Dream Home 2009. How I wish I will be lucky to win this. The Floor plan on this green home is very interesting to me. I love that the Master’s unit is laid out away from the rest of the house,it’s like you’re in your own private place. I can’t wait to get the chance to tour this Green Home.

AliciaGL on February 19, 2009 at 7:29 pm
  374. I’m sure to be in the minority here but I think this floorplan is hideous. I certainly don’t want the entry to my master bedroom sitting in the living room. I don’t care to walk through my closet at night to get to my master bathroom either. Kitchen open to the formal living area? Not so much thanks anyway. Jack and Jill bath for the children’s room/guest room – not ideal for either the kids or the guest. Closet space isn’t much, storage space even less. A walkout from the hall bath to the screened porch but not one from the master bedroom?

Green or not, I’ll be skipping the 2010 “Dream” Home. Love the Port St. Lucie area but this house gets thumbs down from me.

Ciara on February 19, 2009 at 8:02 pm
  375. Sorry but don’t like it a bit. Seems to be a lot of wasted space in the foyer and not nearly enough in the kitchen. Not even an eating area other than the “formal” dining room. Would rather not have a doorway directly from the living room into the bedroom – an alcove type entry would have been much more appealing.

While I appreciate separation of the secondary bedrooms from the master this design doesn’t work if you have an infant or toddlers – their room needs to be closer to the master. No sitting area in the master either – an obvious oversight. The sitting room is extraneous – would be better served as another bedroom – perhaps the guest bedroom with it’s own bath (with a doorway to the hall) and make the existing guest bedroom a second children’s room. Doesn’t seem to be a lot of storage space in this house especially when it is slab built – as are the majority of Florida homes.

Comparatively speaking the living room/lounge is overly large next to the other rooms in the house – great for large gatherings but not well thought out in terms of everyday living. Where’s the garage? Detached? A pain for loading and unloading of kids/groceries/etc.

Not my favorite by a long shot :(

Barb on February 19, 2009 at 8:52 pm
  376. I am afraid I do not like the master opening right to the living room. If my kids are watching tv late I don’t want to hear it. It looks awkward with no privacy for the master bedroom.

Rita l. McConnell on February 19, 2009 at 11:01 pm
  377. What is the square footage on this house and on each of the rooms? That would determine if the sitting room can be used as the 4th bedroom. The layout is super and I can hardly wait for the preview photos of the finished product or the actual work in progress.

Carol Buckland on February 19, 2009 at 11:50 pm
  378. There doesn’t seem to be windows in the kitchen, sitting room or children’s rooms. Are they marked differently on this floor plan? I actually like the direct outside access to a bathroom. It prevents kids and there dirt, sand, water ,etc from tracking through the entire house. With a pool or warm weather it’s a must for kids. Can’t wait to see it decorated and start dreaming with my entries.

  388. Why are all these dream homes designed for someone with one child? I need two kids bedrooms and a guest room. It would be nice if these homes had one more bedroom. Besides doesn’t the average family have 2.5 children?

  392. I just want to say this house is going to be perfect. It flows wonderfully. My only dream is to win such an outstanding green home. The best thing would be it’s in florida where my mom lives and that would be the best gift ever to both of us.

  394. The floor plans look amazing. I am so excited about the Green Home. I may be only 16 but I always sign my mom up for the Green and Dream Home. They are always so beautiful when completed. I am going to be an Environmentalist when I get older because I am really involved in Global Warming so I really want to win the Green Home. One day when i get older i will have a Green Home one way or another. I am determined.

  395. I also believe the exit from the hall bath onto the screened porch is perfect. Perfect as one comes in from the beach, rests in one of the chaises to take one more exhilerating look onto the breath taking scene they left behind and then strolls into the bath room to brush off the sand, put on the flip flops and continue to make dinner for the family.

  396. To Barb February 19, 2009.
Dear Barb, you must either already live in a very comfortable home or be very spoiled to have such demands on a house you might be the winner. I am somewhat shocked of your critizism. This is what one would call “thinking out of the box”. I absolutely love it.

P.S. You can hire a contractor to built you YOUR dream house to suit.

I love this home and all the things HGTV does with building and decorating ideas, I’m wondering because of the weather in florida and this homes looks to be near water…what’s being done to make the home a little safer in storms etc? I also can’t wait to get info on entering to win this home and the outcome of the winner of the Sonoma,Ca home which I entered to win!!

  404. After looking again and again at the floor plan, I find it is still PERFECT! My husband has copd and is on oxygen, so the floor plan openness would be wonderful for him. He sometimes uses an electric chair. I love the flow. I don’t particularly care for a formal dining room, but do love a big huge table for all to sit around and just be together, this would be great for our life style. My kitchen table has always been the ‘heart’ of our home and our dining room ended up being a spot for homework assignments and holiday dining only. To be honest it was a waste of a lot of floor space. But for years I longed for the ‘dining room’. Guess we learn as we go! I just love this one!

Maureen on February 23, 2009 at 1:06 pm

  406. I LOVE the unusual/unique layout. It’s wounderfull and the decor is warm and inviting. ONE thing though is that I believe, or think that the guest and the children should not share a bathroom, they should each have sperate bathrooms.

  409. Great design, especially for Florida. However, there’s no garage. Anyone who knows anything about Florida, especially the coastal areas, know that your car can suffer a lot of damage from salt air by not being closed in. Please, please add a garage!

  411. What an interesting concept~to build such a unique floor plan! I love it!
I can’t wait to see more!
In Florida, it would be useful to place the dining room facing the east sunrise and the living area facing the east, as to cut down on the Florida heat.

  413. I’m dreaming already! The only things that I would change would be a whirlpool tub and a steam-shower, but I guess that they wouldn’t be considered “green.”

It is very common in Florida-designed houses to have the master suite just off the living room and away from the other bedrooms. I have family and friends who live in different areas of Florida and all of their houses are designed this way.

Keep up the great job on “my” house!

Kim on February 26, 2009 at 10:59 am

Thank you so much for doing everthing you can to help our plant. I thank the new
Green home is super. The only thing I would
add is a door going from the master bedroon onto the porch. I hope with this home you will use light colors on the inside walls.
Others than that please don’t change a thing.
I’m a single. Raising my 5 year old granddaughter (Cheyenne Lane) after she lost her parents. The past 3 1/2 years have been very hard on us. Cheyenne has had 4 operations. And maybe facing more. I’m praying very night that GOD and HGTV will help us to have a fresh start.

I am 80 years old in July, crippled, and I wonder how it would feel to live in that gorgeous home and not have repairs all of the time. 431. Wow! First time I see the home plan and it’s awesome!!! Perfect for me, my husband, two teen girls and a pre teen boy. Just perfect! The kids rooms far from the master is a dream. My residence now, has it all close to each other and it can be a bit overwelming with teens in the house, I can tell you. Love the design!!! Lucia

Maria Lucia on March 7, 2009 at 9:14 pm
  432. I love the location, and the house looks very spacious. I had hoped that the square look out area in the roof would have been a room, and that people would be able to walk out onto maybe a balcony on the roof.

Having an office, or a small room between the master and living room would have been nice. Which could be used as a nursery or toddler room.

I’ve seen a few posts of people who are concerned with the space from the master to the child’s room. I think that’s a safety issue, if there’s a break in, or a fire, you’d rather be right next to the child’s room to keep them safe.

This house might be better suited for a person without children.

the living space is extremely large, one could modify it so that there is a small room between the master and the living room.

I’d actually prefer to have my toddler in the same side of the house, maybe in the master, it is quite large.

Tara on March 7, 2009 at 11:58 pm
  433. I don’t mind a child sharing a bathroom with a guest but when there’s a door to the child’s room and the guest’s room, it makes me uncomfortable.

You could know someone so well but not know them enough. Maybe next Green Home will be planned safer for a child. A child might also loose some of that personal feeling when their room is next to an empty room.

If I were to win the house I just might use the room next to the child’s room to feel secure that my child is more safe.

Heck maybe the master could become a den or luxurious get away space. Bamboo floors??

Tara on March 8, 2009 at 12:11 am
  434. What a beautiful location and home, all the more beautiful because it is green.

Cora on March 8, 2009 at 12:05 pm
  435. First of all I love the floor plan. Wonderfully spacious.
The door that connects the child room to bathroom and guest room would be perfect for a guest with children. Otherwise it could be locked. So, problem solved.

Also, the door ( in the floor plan) that seems to lead from a bathroom to the screened porch is surely a mistae in the rendition? I would love a door from the dining room to the screened in porch. That would greatly expand entertainment space.

  439. Wow is that true It’s being built here in Florida? In Tradition, in Port St. Lucie? I love it! I have lived here for 38 years moved down 4 months after we were married from Long Island… we live in Ft. Pierce… sure has taken you a long time to realize what a wonderful area this is to live and raise a family. Aside from the Hurricanes this is one place you can call paradise!
I look forward to visiting the site and watching it being built. Sure could use some pointers on remolding my hall bath. Thanks HGTV… love your Network and all your shows! Sincerely, VeroYorkie

  440. All doors, closets and entrances/exits should be at least 30 – 34 inches wide. One sink in the master bath could be wheelchair accessible. Plan ahead — all of us are going to be old someday and maybe handicapped!! VERY IMPORTANT: Move the hall bath down next to the laundry/mud room. That way you don’t have a bath so close to the kitchen and dining areas. There used to be laws in some states that said there had to be two (2) doors between a bath and the kitchen or the bathroom had to be a certain number of feet away. That would also cluster some water/drain pipes/etc. By moving that bath, the outside patio wall would not be broken up and would make it easier to arrange patio furniture. Also, no one wants to be that close to a bathroom — inside or outside!!! Since the kitchen is so far from entrances, a cart of some kind would be helpful when taking the purchases to the kitchen. Maybe it could even be stored behind a kitchen cabinet door. A number of years ago, I purchased an $80.00 plastic media cart (like teachers use in the classroom) to transport groceries to my kitchen from a distant garage. Works great. Big/tall/heavy items can go on the top or bottom shelf and smaller things on the middle shelf. Maybe the HGTV staff and architects can invite some wheelchair bound guests to “try” to navigate/use the various features in the house. That would no doubt be an eye-opener! Most of us have elderly parents and/or handicapped friends/relatives, and hopefully we will live to be old!! Plan for the future!

  442. Wow i hope me and my family would win this house. I have been going through hard times where i didn’t have enough money to pay the bills so we had to sleep in the dark and in the heat. My husband is 59 and he works 24/7 and i haven’t seen him since before new years. He works as a truck driver delivering furniture. My mom passed away on 2004 right on my birthday. Recently my daughter also have been going through hard times, she wasn’t doing so good in school because of the kids mistreating her. Me and my family went through the worst but we are still here. If we win this house we can relax in our new house and enjoy the beach and not remembering the past. We will be together again : )

  444. There are so many great aspects about this home. It is obvious the designers put a lot of thought into the plan before coming up with this plan. As a parent of 2 young boys, I appreciate that the master bedroom is not beside the other bedrooms, but beside the living room. When the children go to sleep they won’t be distracted by any entertainment in the living room or the screened porch, back yard. Very smart planning. Once again, thank you HGTV for a fabulous Green Home.

  458. Love the fact that this is the second house built in southern Florida, which is where we’d love to live, but can’t afford. We’re in north central Florida. Registered for the Key West home even though it was 2 floors. There are certain critical things about this house that are just not there for a Florida home. How about a single story future home with wider doors all around the home, huge rooms, 2-car garage that holds car w/wheelchair ramp, a bathroom with tubs and showers designed for the disabled. And how about making it truly green with enough solar panels to eat the entire electrical needs of the whole house. Please no subdivisions with HOA fees (people in FL are leaving HOA’s in droves for a reason!) and how about lakefront, not oceanfront. Looking forward to my dream home. Haven’t seen it yet. Maybe over the next couple years. Still dreaming!

  459. AWESOME !!! Thank you HGTV !! I love it … I love the rooftop patio with the planters for herbs and veggies… and the dining area up there.. I love the master bath… I can’t wait to soak in that tub… I love the lounge area… so you can hang with you girl friends.. while the boys are in the living room watching the “game”… or playing cards .. I love that their is the wet bath from the enclosed patio…does that mean there will be a pool?? I am hoping so… you can’t live in Florida without it.. I love the fireplace at the front entry…is it see through from the front door??? I am just dreaming… are the orange lounge chairs in the lounge area… and the dining room has yellow walls, right… I am thinking it is going to be tropical… maybe spanish influence to match the exterior.. I love the location of the kids’ room.. I love to have sleep overs with his friends and letting them share between two rooms when you have a few extra kids..or cousins.. I love the sitting room.. being used as a sitting room, that way our son can have his own space or when Grannie visits she can lounge and relax in her “own” space…Love the Truck.. My Husband will love it for sure.. He transfers a lot of props for work… Which it is awesome that we have to move to Florida for work in June… so, it would be a dream to win this Green Home.. I can’t wait to see the special on April 19th… I wish everyone good luck and hope that everyone stays positive with their comments…. Just remember that it is a free home !!! and truck !!! If you don’t like it, win it and sell it… but, let the rest of us stay excited and happy, even if we only have a 1 out of 39,000,000 +++ chance of winning… Keep it nice… and positive.. especially because my son reads the blogs sometimes when I am on… as, he is excited to try and win as well…. Thank You HGTV…. I know this Green Dream Home is going to be Awesome as your team always does a super creative job…. and Linda is so artistic at recycle items.. I can’t wait to see the two wood tables.. the one at the entry way and the dining table.. I read that they are completely made of recycled wood and that the wood in the kitchen in dark… I can’t wait… It sounds beautiful !! I guess that I am over excited… I just really want to win this time… after 8 years of entering and the last 2 for the Green Home… Good Luck to all again… ;@)

Renee Urso on March 23, 2009 at 9:10 pm
  460. FYI…. There is a large 2 car garage…. It is just not showing on the floor plan.. you have to go into the construction exterior shots to see it… I believe it is right off the laundry room… you can see that there is space that opens into another area there… It is also the logical spot… to me, anyway…. also, JenniferLynn, I agree with you… You seem to be as excited as my family, so I send you a friendly “Good Luck”… for those with larger families… the sitting room could be used as a bedroom, because it does have a closet… so that would make 3 bedrooms, besides the master… also, you could probably enclose the lounge if you had to… or just sell it and buy something more appropriate for you…just a suggestion.. I have no idea.. I have one 8 year old boy.. who doesn’t really care how big his room is or where it is.. he love hanging with his mom and dad.. and outside.. Also, there was someone who asked where the tub is in the master… it is between the two sinks on the open floor.. I believe it is called a garden tub.. it stands alone and has a beautiful base.. I saw an article on it… Good Luck…

When I win this home it gets a pool with solar heating. I used to live in Port Saint Lucie about 2 miles from where the Dream home is and had to move north due to family illness. We are now ready to move back home to Tradition. We miss Florida.

  464. Correction…. There is not a fireplace in the living space… my mistake.. when I looked at the floor plan and the picture on HGTV Pro, it looked like a fireplace wall. You don’t need a fireplace in Port St. Lucie…. now if you live in the panhandle ,,,, that’s a different story…… I heard that a pool could be added…. and there is a perfect spot for it close to the outdoor kitchen…. Good Luck to all !!!! Love Life and Live Green !!

  465. This house is the best yet, in my opinion. The neutral colors, furniture, and brightness are fantastic. Only two things missing, a fireplace (yes we do use them in Florida) and a swimming pool. Not many people live in Florida without one.
Good luck everyone. I hope whoever wins is able to keep it.

  467. I just love this house. Who wouldn’t want to live in Paradise? We are still raising two little ones 11 and 2 and it looks like a great community. Perfect place to teach our kids to live green. I wanted to know how big the lot is and also if there are any churches near the home. I hope I win so o o o o o o bad. Uh oh, I think I need a break from the little one. lol.

  468. Love the open floor plan, good flow and that it is all on one level. Really like that the master suite is separate from the other bedrooms. The concept of the mudroom with an entrance by the garage is great. Just wish it had been located off the kitchen where groceries could be easily carried in, and kids and pets would not have to trapse through whole house from mudroom to kitchen.

  469. Although I am a northeast girl and we are used to 2 floor homes, the layout of this one interest me. I do however have some problems with it.
I’m used to central water walls rather than multiple locations for potential water “mishaps”. I’m not sure if all that additional piping would be considered green or cost efective.
The guest and children will essentially be sharing the same bathroom. I recongnize there is a hall bath, but that’s for visitors and such.
Single floor homes are perfect for Florida, but I hope you make the ceilings a little higher than a standard 9ish.
I think you should switch up the lounge area and make that the dining area. That wall has more potential for big open windows that would be very relaxing for dinners or breakfast. Plus, it won’t be so tight as looking at the small eating area made me confined. Makes more sense to have the lounge area near the screened in porch that way one lounging area segways into the next. But then again, the dining area should be placed according to which windows will be facing sunset.

  470. I’m sorry but I do not like this floor plan at all. Will there be a garage? Will there be a drive-way, and if so where? Does not look like there is easy access for unloading groceries – to get to the kitchen for this task do you go through the screen porch, the bathroom or the front door? Going through a closet to get to the master bath? What happens when you have quest’s and they need to use the master bath, if the other’s are not available? I don’t think I would like traffic through my closet. Some of the closet’s seem very small. Where the laundry room is located seems very odd and inconvenient also. What about eating area?
I see only one in the formal area of the home – the only other would be the bar located at the kitchen. The kitchen seems very small also – will there be an island for eating – but the kitchen looks too small for an island. I do have problems with this floorplan. I think they could have come up with a better one. Sorry!

  471. Hi Judy,

I just thought that you would like a few of your questions, answered.. There is a garage and breezeway that leads to the laundry room, service area… The master closets have beautiful curtains so that no one would have to see your personal belongings. The eating areas are everywhere.. From the awesome barstools at the kitchen counter, the great table on the screened in porch, the beautiful dining table to the rooftop terrace… Isn’t that awesome and just so creative.. Also, the closets may seem a little smaller than what builders do today, but, this home is eco-conscious by building space for what you need and use.. to reduce waste. I know some have a lot more to store… maybe store by seasons in the closets and place the rest in the garage as they do have storage there…The GH2009 is also made for those who win to be able to entertain and live outdoors !!! As there is so much in do in Traditions @ Port St. Lucie.. I hope this helps.. If not, there are a few veteran bloggers and Gail or Mary would be able to give you more details…. Good Luck.. Love life by living green !!!

  472. As I live in a 500 sq ft duplex with my husband and two grown kids, I would be blessed to win this house. I enter in the hope I can improve my family’s life.

Lorinda on April 23, 2009 at 7:07 pm
  473. I love everything about the house except that you have to walk through your master bedroom closet to get to the bathroom. I think the closet should’ve been on the outside with windows, of course, in each. By the time you get to the toilet in the middle of the night, you are totally awake. :-)

  474. I live 5 minutes from this Green Home. Since I am not going to pay $30 for both my husband and I to tour it in person, I have seen it from the outside, and I have gone on all of the online virtual tours. I have a lot of problems with it. First, whoever designed it made sure no one who had any knee, hip, leg, or back problems (i.e. NO middle age or seniors allowed!) could possibly live there. There are steps going up to the front and back porch, and a spiral staircase from the ground to the roof, where there is a garden and sitting area. There is a floorplan, but no dimensions of the rooms are given – the bedrooms look very small, and there is no eat-in area in the kitchen. Yes, there are barstools, but that cannot substitute for a family eating area in the kitchen. The family would have to eat in the dining room for every meal.
Also, the house is located in the middle of NOTHING. Yes, Tradition is a wonderful town- it has everything within a 2 mile area, including shopping, walking and biking paths, and lakes. I love living here. But the green home is on a main road all by itself. There are no neighbors, no facilites, such as pool and clubhouse. If you are a young, adventurous family with hundreds of thousands of dollars available to pay the prize tax on the house, then by all means, take a chance on it.

  476. This house would be a dream to own. Immediately upon retiring, my husband has battled, and continues to battle, cancer. We don’t know how many years we have left together (after 42 years of working and raising two kids), and it would be a dream come true to have our final years in a place like this!

  477. Wow! This Green Home is absolutely gorgeous! I can definitely picture myself living here and starting a family. I was planning to move to Florida in the near future and learn more about green living and pursue my career in Interior Design. This would be the perfect home to nuture those dreams! Thank you HGTV!

  478. A very strange, but yet intriguing layout. Looks like it would be a great challenge to properly arrange furniture so that everything would balance and yet be so different, in as much as the home is. A win would finally get us out of the cold. Thanks for the opportunity to post a comment.

  482. The floor plan design is impressive and functional. I watched the tour yesterday on HGTV and the decor and furniture are exceptional–and all so GREEN! Especially appreciate the rooftop garden and the outdoor patio is to die for. It is my dream to move to FL. My compliments to the designers!

  484. My dream retirement home! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!My home sweet home. After working for more than 30 years I will retire in sunny Florida. My 5 children, gandchildren, their pets will come and visit me anytime they want. I will go in a medical mission outside the country. The LORD saved my life in a car accident to fulfill my dreams. It will be a dream come true.

  485. This home is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! The layout is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Winning a home like this is the opportunity of a life time and would help my family so much. Good luck to you all and God Bless those at HGTV for providing us with this opportunity!

  486. This is beyond comprehension for me as I live in a 14′ by 70′ trailer. The hallway of this AMAZING home is bigger than the whole trailer I live in. To win something like this is beyond all comprehension for me after having to live in a trailer for so many years. I couldn’t imagine the joy and thrill of a REAL HOME instead of having to live in this trailer with the floor falling through in several places! I pray every single day to win this home and it’s all in GOD’s hands now (and HGTV of course). Thank you for this opportunity and I couldn’t imagine life without HGTV to watch! God Bless you all!!

  488. Great job as always with the house…I only entered once so i doubt i’m the person to own this home, but i think its really great that you give people hope to win something this wonderful….to all those who choose to complain or say negative comments to something that is GIVEN to you out a generous spirit, you don’t deserve to win the home!!!!

  489. The plan looks vague to me but maybe that space next to the dining room is a sliding door? That living room seems very long. I wonder how that complicates construction and the support of the roof?

  493. Good night .
I have something to say, about AloeVera, something about which you wrote above, about health and nutritional… For a long time, I and my friend use the products of the Forever Living Products. We always see the fine results and also we earn money for our families and we are happy. My friend works with Aloe Vera in the company of forever living products has more than 5 years (My friend works ONLY in the forever living products company and has a wife and three children). I know AloeVera products for nutritional for a long time, but a year ago, began working as a distributor in the Forever Living Company.
Of course, this job is some difficult, but in no other case, You really can earn so much much money with so much much fun and smiling faces around….
So if you want to discuss something about which you wrote above, and about my experience with aloe Vera products for weight management, I’ll always be glad to talk.

Best regards from Washington state and have a nice day!
