Happy Earth Day!

It’s April 22. What are your Earth Day plans? Taking a nature walk or stroll along the shore? Planting a tree? Volunteering? If I were free this evening, I’d love nothing better than to walk down to the beautiful lake near my home, park myself at the edge of the dock and relax as the sun sinks low. No car horns or distracting chatter. Imagine being surrounded by only the sound of chirping mocking birds and the occasional splash of water as a fish jumps to the water’s surface. Ahhhh …

Collegemom…I remember when you wondered where we all got the time..honestly, me too. I have not been on the computer for an hour total since the day they gave away the dream home…until now. I use vinegar to keep the ants outside, so I just started cleaning with it ONLY.
MARIE..thanks, good to hear about you too.
I just took the tour again and LOVE it all but
WHAT ABOUT HURRICANE WINDOWS?
What a lovely mental picture. Happy Earth Day.
Mary you are so right…. We have become so busy with our lives that it is difficult to unplug and become one with nature… today I am turning off the tv and sitting outside to read a book, before it gets too hot…. then we will eat a pasta salad, fruits and iced tea that I made yesterday…. so no cooking today…. and I am going through my closet to donate clothing that I have not worn in 6 months to 1 year… along with my husband and son’s… and a few of my little one’s toys and books… Just doing what I can today… instead of putting it off again !!! Love life by living green !!
I can’t believe that the HGTV Green Home is sponsored by Sherwin Williams whose logo is the earth LITERALLY getting covered with paint. Is no one else bothered by this?
My Earth Day project is getting fertilizer spikes into the ground around the citrus trees—have been meaning to get it done, and there’s no better day than today. Also, time for another gallon bottle of white vinegar. The housekeeper uses it on the tile floors throughout the house—it leaves them spotless and shiny, AND freshens the air nicely. Lean, Green, and really clean, just the way I like it.
Also will have an “instant” hot water heater placed at the shower farthest from the standard tank water heater to cut down on water waste while waiting for the hot water to “arrive”. A friend had one placed at the kitchen sink, and it performs flawlessly. Every little bit counts.
For myself, I’m taking a long walk up, down, and through the foothill streets of the neighborhood, then taking all of my plastic shopping bags to the store for recycling, and using only reusable canvas shoppping bags from this day forth. One small step for mankind….
Already volunteered. Would love to take a nature walk but must wait for the rain to pass.
My idea for going ‘green’ is to turn off the computer, television and put the phone on answering machine after 6 p.m. this evening through the weekend after I post this. Lots more time to spend with family, being outside, reading, quilting, crafts, etc.
Up until six years ago or so we didn’t have a television and spent tons of time playing games, reading and learning new crafting skills.
Then three years ago bought a computer for finishing school but time to unplug and either sell or give away that, too much time spent on the thing even when monitor time.
Two years ago my kids bought me my first ever microwave and an answering machine for the phone. While I like them both I got along fine without and contemplating getting rid of both for simpler life. I enjoy making everything by hand, defrosting night before, and generally heat up alot in pan on stove instead of ‘wave’ anyways. Kids like wave for chocolate, hot water for tea and the ocassional potatoe.
I don’t need to have a computer to enter contests, check email and just little fussy stuff–walk to the library.
Happy Earth Day to you too Mary, and to all of our greaming buddies!! One of the things I really want to do today is see the production of “Earth” by Disney!! A glimpse of the show is on this trailer site:
http://disney.go.com/disneynature/
It is designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment!
The Earth is our home. It has no rights, justification, value, or purpose other than providing human beings with a lovely habitat. So if the Earth is our home, it means that we humans have the equally crucial status as the Earth’s tenants. This leads us to the oft-overlooked corollary: To love the Earth, you have to love people. The Earth is a beautiful place full of mystery and complexity and scope and sheer awe-inspiring beauty. Let’s celebrate that by continuing to live there in the manner that serves us best….there are many things that we can do locally to educate and affect change on a global level….HGTV has certainly taken a stand by going green with there Green Home give-away!! We can continue our plight by making simple changes! So, let’s see, in celebration of Earth Day, I am going to participate in a neighborhood garden…working there with other friends is wholesome & productive, not to speak of the delicious rewards we reap by growing our own vegetables!! Then, after a quick shower & robust veggie/fruit smoothy, I want to head out to our local theatre to see “Earth!!”
Have a great day & my continued best wishes for “green” stimulation!!!
I’m so glad that people still take the time in April to really think about the amazing world we have around us, and take a little time out of their day to help out Mother Nature. I wish I could be out volunteering, but right now I am helping my science students make it through one of our state tests. I want to congratulate all of you out there who made an effort today to protect our planet! Stay green!
taday is my boy Bday he’s 13.
Hi everyone,
Mary that sounds so nice to be by a lake. I hope you have time to enjoy it. Thankyou for the beautiful picture.
Rhonda it is so great to hear from you. Thank you for the tip of using vinegar. It will be an earth friendly remedy of keeping the ants outside.
Show Me I am sure you will really enjoy your tankless water heater.
Marie I hope you enjoy your movie. Perhaps we will hear from you on how you liked it?
Have a wonderful evening everyone. Gream big and live green.

Thanks Mary for the beautiful picture. It is very important that people understand how complex and worth wild it is to enjoy the ONLY Earth we have. Today April 22 2009 for earth day I showed my kids how important is to recycle and reuse. We went to our local recycling center and got rid of of all papers and plastic bottle. I also compost which is great way to reduces the land field site and its great for my flower beds.We went around the neighborhood and pick up any garbage or Debee. We also plated a tree that I received from the national arbor foundation. Boy am I tired… Tonight don’t forget to shut off the lights for at least 1 min to replenishes the earth at 9:00pm eastern time. Happy Earth Day Everyone.. May god bless this earth for years to come..
Hi All Bloggers,
The picture above is so representative of our fragile planet.
While I was sitting at my desk today, I kept hearing a lot of noise in the tree’s outside my office. I got up to look through the window to see an entire Cardinal family leaving their nest for the day.
Yesterday, I discovered a bunny hiding under my car. I really don’t need to look for luck-it’s right in front of me.
Earth day is every day!
Greamin-Green!
I know that this past year has been a big change for me as far as helping Mother Earth. This past year I have started recyling just about everything…cans, plastic bottles, glass, cardboard and paper. It was something I had never done before (I know shame on me!). I also stopped using paper plates. We would go through a ton of them. So I feel that our carbon imprint has changed so much in the last year. So this year I am going to try to have a veggie garden. Which is very scary cause I have killed just about every flower I have ever planted. For some reason they need this thing call WATER…lol! I am also going to try and not drive my car so much…consolidate my trips to town!
Well HAPPY EARTH DAY TO EVERYONE!
I hope that everyone enjoyed their Earth day!! To go Green on as usual, I plugged my cell phone (named Rol-E) charger in a surge protector to save the amount of electricity used! I love doing this as much as possible for the energy and money savings! Not to mention the additional outlets!
Thanks for the mental picture and the actual picture posted, Mary!!
Mary— that was a really Nice Picture. Where was it taken? It does not look like Florida. I’d love to take a nature walk–but if you decide to sit on a log, I’d make sure that it is Really a Log, and not a Sleeping Alligator!!! YIKES!!! I love nature and beautiful trees, but I’m afraid of those Gators!!

That picture was taken along the Cumberland Trail in TN. A gorgeous hike with wildflowers all along the way!

MARY— I Knew It!!! I had a feeling that it was in Tennessee. I lived in Virginia years ago, and they are both beautiful, picturesque states!!! I’ve lived in Florida for a long time, and it guess that I take it for granted. But I really so miss seeing Tall trees and the color-changing of the leaves

While recovering from breast cancer I have been very aware not to be around chemicals of any kind. Instead I sat and did the theraputic work of pulling our dandelion weeds by hand three times a season from our huge back yard. This year I’ve decided since we are losing our bee population I’ll burn the seed heads but leave the flowers.
