And the Winner Is …

I have no idea. But we did select the winner of the HGTV Green Home 2009 in a private drawing yesterday at one of the country’s leading fulfillment houses.

Boy, was it exciting. From more than 16 million entries, HGTV’s Senior Vice President of Brand Management and Scheduling, Sarah Cronan, plucked the golden egg (well, it looked more like a Ping-Pong ball with a number on it, but still). Home planner Jack Thomasson — looking exceptionally spiffy in vest and jeans — was on hand to assist Sarah with the proceedings.

What happens next? Our TV producers get to work planning out the giveaway special – and winner ambush! Who knows, you could be getting a knock on your door.  If the buzzer rings, please come out on your front porch and say hi.

  9. Boo I didn’t win I entered 95 times. The winner only entered 3-5 times. I guess it realy is the luck of the draw. I am happy for them but very sad that me and my family did not win. It would have been the answer to our prayers. Enjoy the beautifull green home!!

  11. Definately wasn’t live, it’s still light out here in MI. Even though it wasn’t us, its great they picked someone in Michigan, especially Saginaw!

    E. on June 28, 2009 at 7:41 pm
  12. I thought the give away was live? I know it is not dark in Mich at this time of day as I am in the same time zone and alot further south. Sun should still be shinning in Michigan at live give away.

What kind of scam is this? Kind of strange.

Alex Brick on June 28, 2009 at 7:42 pm
  13. HGTV, I am so disappointed in you. How can you call this a live giveaway when it’s stil light outside where the winners lived, but yet it was dark outside when you “surprised” them with it? I live on the east coast, and it’s darkest here at this time of day. Yet it’s still light outside here, even now, and Michigan is west of me. You guys are liars. If you’re going to say it’s live, make it live. if you can’t do it live because of logistics, then DON’T SAY IT’S LIVE. It was pitch black when you “surprised” them. Obviously it’s not live and you “surprised” them before today after the sun goes down, as it was dark when you did it. Do your homework next time you want to portray something as live. so disappointed.

Sandra on June 28, 2009 at 7:44 pm
  14. Why was it dark in Saginaw Michigan when they “surprised” the winner? I’m not far from there (Indiana) and it is still very sunny outside at 7:25 pm! When do they really SURPRISE the winner, we the viewers would like to know……..

  17. Why do they tell us that it is live when it obviously isn’t? I’m losing faith in these home giveaways when they pull stunts like that.

Tenaj on June 28, 2009 at 7:45 pm
  18. hgtv, you posted my comment but for some reason you posted it under the name jody wrong name.

Debbie on June 28, 2009 at 7:50 pm
  19. Obviously, due to the pre-recorded “live” giveaway, we have been duped. I was suspicious about the giveaway last March when it was already dark at that giveaway, but this one stole the cake. HGTV, you should be ashamed of yourselves…

stormtracker on June 28, 2009 at 7:53 pm
  20. HGTV IT IS STILL LIGHT OUTSIDE…….I live in arkansas and it sure the hell is not dark outside.i use to like watching hgtv but you guys are up in the night!!!!!!!!!!!!

Debbie on June 28, 2009 at 7:55 pm
  21. For those new to television… “Live” means that it wasn’t rehearsed. You know, like Saturday Night Live. They aren’t really taping at 10:30 on Saturday night.
Congrats to the winner! I hope I’m next. I entered about 150 times – oh well, on to the Dream Home! Keep dreamin’!

    Dreamin' D on June 28, 2009 at 7:56 pm
  22. Well, I too, am disappointed in HGTV for deceiving everyone that it was a LIVE giveaway! I also thought that the “LIVE Giveaway” would be streamed on the web but the countdown clock was still counting down in the Central time zone and had an hour to go at 7PM CDT??? A real screw up if you ask me! I don’t see how anyone can keep one of these expensive homes unless you are already rich enough to own one. The entire prize amount will count as Income for the year and on top of the income taxes, there are property taxes and insurance that need to be paid. Good luck to the winners!

Gil on June 28, 2009 at 7:57 pm
  23. Hey, Dreamin’D, SNL is LIVE and it IS rehearsed. Live TV means that the events are taking place in REAL time NOT RECORDED!

Gil on June 28, 2009 at 8:00 pm
  24. To the person who said “live” means it wasn’t prehearsed. NO. Live means LIVE. Don’t you ever watch the news? When’s the last time CNN said something was live, when, oops, they just meant they hadn’t rehearsed the recording. So when they said it was LIVE when they were following MJ’s tragic death, they really just meant, hey there, we didn’t rehearse this tragedy beforehand, and the reporting that goes with it. You are an idiot.

Sandra on June 28, 2009 at 8:04 pm
  25. researched the film festival that she was walking through “live” at 7:00pm CDT…it wasn’t scheduled to start until 9:13pm. I didn’t pay attention to the movie that was playing but if it was “It’s a wonderful life” then it was taped last Sunday….so much for “live”.

Tenaj on June 28, 2009 at 8:06 pm
  26. Sad day for losers. Lose the hype ….

Diana becker on June 28, 2009 at 8:09 pm
  27. Where are you all getting the idea that the winner was from mail ins? Just because they showed shots of mail cages doesn’t mean one of the online entries wasn’t a win. They assign numbers onto balls & one is picked. If you read the rules they do a background check on finalists. I don’t know how many finalists they narrow it down to. I wouldn’t be surprised if the finalists are notified that they are in the running. That way they know to be home. The site told us they had the drawing yesterday & “picked” the winner. Doubt the winners were totally surprised. Probably knew they had a good chance. Too much on the line for the advertisers to allow a cold drawing. However I congrat the winners in Michigan. If you move here to Florida be prepared for sauna humidity. If husband’s business is outside you better do a trial move first. The house is beautiful.

  28. I know that my participation won’t make or break HGTV, but I seriously doubt I’ll go to the trouble of entering again. If you’ll lie about being “live” what else is going on– do you really even give the homes away???

Brett on June 28, 2009 at 8:34 pm
  31. ok, I admit… a better way of describing it would have been “no do-overs”; but it does not mean live at this very moment. And yes some programs are live at this very moment, like the news. How do you explain The Tonight Show when many of it’s skits take place outside and it’s sunny out? I didn’t know it was sunny at 11:00 p.m. in CA.
Whatever, you shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Maybe HGTV watches the blog and disqualifies those who complain about the taxes and the way the drawing is held. I am very happy that HGTV gives me something to dream about, hope for, and anticipate. Most of us need something to look forward to.
Once again, thank you to those who remained positive throughout; Renee loves green, collegemom, Anne Rhodes, and matthew peter. Oh well, all the negativity has ended the fun. Peace out. See you in the Dream House Blog.

  32. i hope it’s me !!

rick on June 28, 2009 at 8:45 pm
  33. Congratulations to the winner! These giveaway shows have to be pre-recorded so that they can surprize the winner. If it were live, then they run the chance of the winner not being there. They most likely watch you a couple of days before hand so that when they know you’re home, they can surpize you. I believe that the winner didn’t know until Chin Lan Leiu arrived, but she did know before all of us did and there’s nothing wrong with that. Everyone should be happy for the lady who won. She seemed like a good person and deserved to win. As for the rest of us…there’s always next time. Good luck to all!

  34. I am like so many others what a scam…

Rebecca on June 28, 2009 at 8:57 pm
  35. I can’t believe the people who blog here, you guys act like if you’re living in some fairy tale, how you guys write it sounds like a bunch of kids who believe in Santa Claus . The way things are written around here it sounds like negativity is a ”BIG CRIME”, if a person wants to be angry let them be angry at least they’re being honest not like a bunch of phonies here who pretend to be happy with everything. Some people here are just so naive! They are willing to lie to others and themselves because they can’t handle a little reality or negativity. People here think that they are actually making a difference because they buy a stupid hybrid car or try to live green Ha Ha Ha, I guess people here don’t watch south park since they say the truth to anyone, and you know YOU CAN HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!. I will tell you guys what will make a difference in the world, getting rid of bad people not putting them in jail, getting rid of rap music, getting rid of guns, getting rid of beer, no war, but I guess living green is just as good. Some of you think this is a scam, but it’s a scam, why the hell people that already live in a good house enter this, I guess they want to make the show look good by not going to apartments, it’s all about ratings people. People that will read this will probably think that I’m full of hate; I’m just a realistic person who will say the truth to anyone. I will tell you what this is full of a bunch of phonies, like they say, CARE SELLS.

  36. I wish that I can get it! but cannot even afford to pay my bills now, can’t even imagine to pay 48% on taxes for a property. We’ll see. Hope I don’t miss the show!

EMorales on June 28, 2009 at 9:43 pm
  37. OK, most anyone would want to win but for the other 16 million of us who didn’t win…things don’t make u happy – things can make life easier but not bring u happiness. If you’re breathing…u are a winner. It’s amazing to hear so many complaints. :0( THANKS HGTV/advertisers/sponsors for making this opportunity possible & fun!! Please continue the great programming & sweepstakes! God Bless America!

  39. Nothing you see on T.V.is what it appears to be.Everything is made to make the producers to look good. They probably select a person that will fit their profile,so d’ont put too much hope…
