HGTV Green Home 2010: Second Location Clue
You are right. The first set of photos are related to states whose names begin with the letter M. But which one will serve as the location for our next HGTV Green Home? Below you will see today’s photo hints. Think of firsts in American history.

MARY= I just want to say how much ” I LOVE HGTV”— and the Blogs are so Much Fun!!!!
I’m Really, Really Hoping that HGTV will Continue to Keep the “Green Home Blog” up and running Constantly. — and walking us through and Keeping us Updated ( just like HGTV is doing Now with the next Dream Home in New Mexico)—- please? pretty please?
When I watched the HGTV Special, and Carter Oosterhouse was just standing there— for a really long time— in front of the “Conchology Picture”—- it was like, OMG— not too long ago,— been there, done that—- LOL LOL LOL—- I had “Googl-itis” at the time with the Conch Shells clue—-
Thanks,
Diana
OK, Right now—- I’m seeing BOSTON!!!! YEAH!!!!!
1st Pic= that is a SUBWAY—- BOSTON!!! There are No subways in Missouri or Montana
2nd Pic= BOSTON CELTICS
3rd Pic= OK , stumped— we have to research this picture. It almost looks like the “old cigar factory” off of I-4 in Tampa— but know it’s not that—- LOL LOL
4th Pic= apples? Is that really a picture of apples? Apples do grow better up north, in cold climates. Any clues to apples to New England, anybody?????
Diana
Among the earliest US railroads were Boston & Lowell and the Baltimore & Ohio. 2 M states, Mass & Maryland. Plus Boston’s mass transit system includes trains similar to the ones in the picture. It’s been a few years since I was there on one, so not sure if they are the exact same.
Basketball was first played at a school which is now known as Springfield College (in Springfield Massachusetts).
The building looks like many old Boston buildings. Apples could be for the first Thanksgiving at Plymouth Mass.
Next try, those and signs always seem to put me in moderation, but I’m so used to using them – it’s habit.

ok, I’ve taken out the and signs, nothing bad to say, but still in moderation?? What’s up? It’s not like I can spread my cold or flu through the blog.
I’ll have to keep trying, don’t know what is keying me into the “moderation” zone.
Okay, I’m going to decode the images:
1.) Toronto Metro
2.) Basketball Hoop – set against “Mississippi sky”
3.) Building – Seneca Knitting Mill – Seneca Falls, NY
4.) Apple Tree – says it’s in Morgan County Alabama??
Hmmm, but what does it all mean?? Toronto & Seneca Falls NY are near Michigan…. Alabama borders Mississippi…. Maybe we’ve reduced it down to two “M” states???
test
Looks like after yesterday….moderation is in full swing today.
For more clues, here is the description of the Seneca Falls Knitting Factory
The Seneca Knitting Mill built in 1844 is the only standing reminder of the Industrial Revolution when Seneca Falls was the “pump capital of North and South America” and the “fire engine capital of the world”.
The Seneca Falls Knitting Company made all the socks for the National Hockey League, the National Basketball League and the first socks to go to the moon! Along the Genesee River, Seneca Falls, New Yor
MARY= OK, I know that I’m repeating myself, but I can’t help it, I’m getting So Excited!!!!
You are so Good at the “Clue” game, and kept everyone at the edge of their seat with the next Dream Home in New Mexico. (I’m embarrassed to admit it, but sometimes I stayed up til’ the wee hours of the morning just trying to uncrack the code—- LOL )
Please—- Please—– Try and Talk HGTV into keeping THIS BLOG UP, — just like they are doing with the New Mexico Home. This way, we’ll have:
1. the Dream Home Blog
2. and the Green Home Blog
MARY, you are the BEST, and HGTV is the BEST
Thank You!!!!!
Diana
It’s MASSACHUSETTS!
The first subway–Boston. Basketball first played–Springfield.
Chelsea Knitting Mills–Chelsea (north of Boston). Apple orchards–Just west of Boston (Fitchburg/ Marlborough area).
Massachusetts is BEAUTIFUL! I lived in Boston/ Cambridge for about 4 years and vacationed on the North Shore when I was child.
OK, so How much Money is a Parking Space in Boston, anyways?
Don’t worry bloggers—- I doubt that the Green Home will be right in the city of Boston, or even right outside the city.
But I’m HOPING— (that it’s near Boston, MASS. of course)—- probably be in a nice, quaint, historical neighborhood that won’t be too far away.
Massachusetts is Cold— but can’t argue— that anywhere is New England is just breath-takingly beautiful!!!!
Maybe I can take a class or two at Hahvahd.
I know— I’m running away and just assuming that it’s definitely Massachusetts—- but I really, really think it is. Cathy Lemar will be really happy, too.
Talk Later, I mean, Latah (just practising)
Diana
Okay, MARY, are you ready?—Massachusetts.
Each photo tells a story of firsts in that great state. Who can identify them all?
All of these photos are easily firsts from the letter M state of Massachusetts. I really hope next years green home is not in Massachusetts, but in Michigan. Massachusetts sounds very boring.
it’s Mass.
Okay… so I went back and remembered the clue to think of firsts in American History and here’s what I’ve deduced:
1.) First Subway – Boston MASSACHUSETTS
2) Basketball was invented by James Naismith as a sport to play indoors during the cold MASSACHUSETTS
3.) Samuel Slater – known as the father of the American Industrial Revolution lived in MASSACHUSETTS, many of early mills were in MASSACHUSETTS, Eli Whitney, inventor of Cotton Gin – also MASSACHUSETTS….
4.)The pilgrims planted the first United States apple trees in the MASSACHUSETTS Bay Colony (although Apple blossoms are the state flower of Michigan…but not necessarily an historic “American First”)
Okay…so I’m thinking MASSACHUSETTS….
The first subway in North America was in Massachusetts, of course you have the Boston Celtics, and Pick Your Own apple farms…the other building I’m unable to see clearly…
Massachusetts! I can’t figure out the 3rd picture, but I think the other 3 point to Massachusetts. The nation’s first subway opened in Boston, Dr. James Naismith from Springfield, Massachusetts invented basketball, and Johnny Appleseed was from Massachusetts. I hope I am right, because I never figure these things out.
The first Public Transportation was in Boston, Mass.
Sorry – left out some data in number 2 of my previous post:
James Naismith moved on to the YMCA Training School in Springfield, MASSACHUSETTS, USA in 1891, where the sport of basketball was born.
Clarification–that was for a ferry–oops!
First Railroad–Baltimore, Maryland
first complete textile factory in America in Waltham, MA
the Seneca Knitting Mill, Seneca Falls N.Y. the first to make socks for the NHL, NBL, and the first socks to go to the Moon…
As in Spalding?
James Naismith, under the direction of American phys-ed specialist Luther Halsey Gulick, invented the indoor sport of basketball at Sprinfield College in Springfield, Mass..
Plymouth rock. Somewhere south of Boston.
Plymouth rock. Somewhere south of Boston. Back to the cold.
Springfield Mass… which also connects with early American history. Hmm
I think is Massachussetts
or maryland… oh is tricky lol
PS: I mentioned in my previous post the ties to Massachusett’s “firsts”, although the lower left photo can be identified as the Seneca Knitting Mills in Seneca Falls, New York. Tied back to the “hoop” photo, the Mills made all of the socks for the National Basketball League (and the first socks to go to the Moon!)
The apple goes back as far as 1630, and the remaining two photos harken back to “firsts” from the late 1800’s, but I’m not telling.
Although comments may be awaiting moderation, I’m sure bloggers are feverishly researching and posting their findings and thoughts minute by minute. MARY will have her hands full keeping up with all of the activity today!
Happy Hunting.
I really hpe they just tell us whaere it is SOON I’m going CRAZY not knowing
Okay,,,,now more confusion!!! Mississippi sky, train in Toronto… an old mill… and an apple tree!!! I will be researching for a while on this one!!! Good Luck!! Love life by living green!!
massachusetts???
Now we know it’s Massachusetts, the first basketball game was played at what is now Springfield College….so now we need to guess what city, town, or village the green Home will be built…
#1=Toronto (???)
#2=sports( saw Cleveland here…but I am not current on sports…)
#3= here is mistake, this bldg is in Tony the Misfit gallery which is #4, and it is this : “The Seneca Knitting Mill built in 1844 is the only standing reminder of the Industrial Revolution when Seneca Falls was the “pump capital of North and South America” and the “fire engine capital of the world”.
The Seneca Falls Knitting Company made all the socks for the National Hockey League, the National Basketball League and the first socks to go to the moon! Along the Genesee River, Seneca Falls, New York. ”
so #3 has to be the fruit – I think peaches, which is Alabama (house of Sims has a lot of pict from Alabama, also a lot family pict there…)
Massachusetts! Basketball was invented in Springfield. The first subway system was in Boston! Johnny Appleseed was born in Leominster, Massachusetts (which could explain the picture of apples). Massachusetts is also known as the Bay State which could explain the building on the water.
I’m pretty positive that the next home will be in Massachusetts! Which is home to many American Firsts!
I guess it is a state of basketball team, I need help on this one
Thank you MARY for the clues! Being the SuperFan I am (
), here I go (clockwise from top left, of course):
Photo #1 – In 1826, the first line of rails in the New England States is said to have been laid down at Quincy, MASSACHUSETTS, 3 miles in length and pulled by horses.
Photo #2 – In early December 1891, Dr. James Naismith,[2] a Canadian physical education professor from McGill University of Montréal and instructor at YMCA Training School[3] (today, Springfield College) in Springfield, MASSACHUSETTS, USA, sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and at proper levels of fitness during the long New England winters. After rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot (3.05 m) elevated track.
Photo #3 – The first apple orchard on the North American continent was said to be where, you may ask? Near Boston, MASSACHUSETTS in 1625!
Photo #4 – This is a photo of The Seneca Knitting Mill built in 1844 is the only standing reminder of the Industrial Revolution when Seneca Falls was the “pump capital of North and South America” and the “fire engine capital of the world”.
Knitting Mill…hmmm…here you go…Francis Cabot Lowell (April 7, 1775 – August 10, 1817) was the American business man for whom the city of Lowell, MASSACHUSETTS, United States is named, and who was instrumental in bringing the Industrial Revolution to the United States. On a visit to England in 1810 at age 36, Lowell carefully studied the textile industries of Lancashire. He was not able to buy drawings or a model of a power loom, however, he memorized the workings of British power looms. Upon his return to Boston in 1813, he joined his brother-in-law, Patrick Tracy Jackson, and Nathan Appleton and established at Waltham the Boston Manufacturing Company, the first textile mill in America where all operations for converting raw cotton into finished cloth could be performed in one mill building.
Phew!!!!!!! I’m exhausted! LOL!
Living the Dream!
Boy these clues don’t help me any more than others did. Could be anywhere. Though the train is a little bit more spot on in being a meaningful clue but could be just a diversion.
I would still hope the sponsors, builders, everyone involved with this new home would pick a location that does not have the owners paying a monthly fee for the privilege of living in their house. No matter what that fee will include, I know I would not live in the house.
Massachusetts– fist subway system, and the “birthplace” of basketball.
Mary,
These are great clues. Unfortunately, I’m stuck on Maryland at this moment. As I research the clues and listen to other bloggers, I’ll make a change.
Have a great day!
Dr. Naismith basketball connection with Massachusetts.
Seneca Knitting Mill NY first to make basketball socks.
Subway..Toronto,Canada? OR Subway sandwiches (guess who has missed her lunch) Pennsylvania.
Apples..Johnny (Chapman) Appleseed born in Massachusetts.
Definitely a new england state.
Mary, Am I in the “awaiting moderation” corner again. None of my posts seem to make it to the blog.
As far as first in American history…Massachusetts would fit definitely the first three pictures. Massachusetts had the first basketball game ever played and the nation’s first subway. The first apple orchard was in Massachusetts as well, near Boston.
However Seneca Knitting Mills was in New York. hmm..
The first subway in America was in Massachusetts.
Mass. Bay Transit Authority was it’s name.
The first subway in Am. History was in Massachusetts.
(My first post went to moderation)
Hello Fellow Greeners,
Well, I think it is Maine. Maine is know for apples and paper mills. I sure there must be a mass transit system somewhere and most home have a basketball net hanging on their garage.
Besides, I think Maine would be a wonderful place for a green home. The North East Coast is always been a favorite dream of mine to visit. Just think of the lighthouses, the seafood, the coastline, the scenery, and the history.
MHorn
I thought when you posted on the blog it posted immediately.
All mine are going to mod.
The answer to the clue is Mass.
ITS MASSACHUSETTES
The pilgrims planted the first US apple trees in Massachusettes,
The first subway sytem in american was in Massachsettes in 1897 I couldnt find anything on the hoop and i dont know what bldg that is
I think its mass.
The building in the Seneca Knitting Mills in NY and the subway is the Toronto Transit. I want to say upstate NY, but there is no “M”.
All have to do with sports:
1.Toronto (subway) hockey
2.Basketball hoop – W. Biloxi MS
3.Seneca Knitting Mills – made the socks for NBL and NHL
4.Apple Tree pic taken in Morgan County AL – home of the Univ of AL and AL Football Hall of Fame
The city of Biloxi is home to the Mississippi Surge, a minor league hockey team playing in the Southern Professional Hockey League. Home games are played at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
The first apple orchard in the US was in Boston.
The first industrial city int he US was Lowell, Mass.
Basketball was invented in Springfield, Mass.
The first subway was in Boston.
Forgot to put Seneca Knitting Mills is in Seneca Falls, NY
From 2nd day’s clues- appears new site will be MA
Everyone there is a new Clue!*smile*
Seneca, New York
New York
Springfield, Massachusetts a 30-year-old Canadian immigrant to the USA, James Naismith, was ordered to invent an indoor game for high-spirited young men at the School for Christian Workers (later the YMCA).
Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority
Streetcar congestion in downtown Boston created the need for subways and elevated rail, the former established in 1897 and the latter in 1901
Want a unique, fun activity for fall in the Boston, MA area? This is where you can find Boston area apple picking orchards, apple farms, apple festivals for Boston and SUFFOLK County, Massachusetts.
The Building is of a Knitting Mills-those are in Massachusetts-It is in Massachusetts!
Well, I hope I can repay all you wonderful bloggers for doing such great research, I had a hunch and I got lucky. That building is the Seneca Knitting Mills built in 1844, along the Genesee River, Seneca Falls, NY. It was the “pump capital of North and South America” and the “fire engine capital of the world”.. But maybe more importantly, it made all the socks for the National Hockey League and National Basketball League and was the first socks to go to the moon! So, there’s our M. Maybe the Green Home will be built on the moon.
Now, will someone please tell me what those things are growing in the last picture? Thanks HGTV for all the fun.
the black & white pic is the Seneca Knitting Mill in New York, Basketball orignated in Canada but moved to Massachusetts, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, proclaimed J.T. Stinson in an address to the St. Louis Expositon. and I don’t know about the Subway.
frankly-I’m confused
The Hall of Fame for Basketball is in Massachusetts
The first basketball team was:
1891,Dec21 – 18 students play 1st college basketball game (Springfield College, Massachusetts).
1892,Jan20 – The first official basketball game was played by students at the Springfield, MA YMCA Training School.
1894,Jan27 – The University of Chicago played its first college basketball game, defeating the Chicago YMCA Training School 19-11. The University of Chicago was the first basketball team to play a full schedule of games, winding up with a 6-1 record.
1895,Feb09 – The first college basketball game was played as Minnesota State School of Agriculture defeated the Porkers of Hamline College, 9-3.
1896,Jan16 – The first five-player college basketball game was played at Iowa City, Iowa. The University of Chicago defeated the University of Iowa by the score of 15-12.
1896,Dec10 – Intercollegiate basketball was played for the first time as Wesleyan University defeated Yale, 4-3, in New Haven, Connecticut.
So I think it will be in Massachusetts
The first basketball team was:

The basketball Hall of Fame is in Massachusetts
So my guess is Mass….
I just went over to the “Winners blog” to congratulate Kari and Mike and found it ‘closed”. I had hints from this blog about how bad the posts had been. How very, very sad. So let me congratulate the Coffeys. Hope your little girl loves the mermaid bedroom as much as I do, but if she is afraid at first, let her coddle with you. This time in Michigan is rough, so I understand your joy at winning the Green Home. Enjoy it, love it and keep it green and keep in touch.
New England in the state of Maine. Kelsey Brook Development in Freeport.
I’m thinking of a few firsts in American history as noted below for states beginning with the letter M:
State to abolish capital punishment: Michigan, 1847.
Steam-heated building: Eastern Hotel: Boston, Massachusetts, 1845.
Steam railroad (carried passengers and freight): Baltimore, Maryland
Black elected to U.S. Senate: Hiram Revels, 1870, Mississippi.
Newspaper published over a continuous period: The Boston News-Letter, April 1704.
Savings bank: The Provident Institute for Savings, Boston, 1816.
Photo #1….Subway: Opened in Boston, 1897….I really think this might be the best clue: The oldest rapid transit system in the world is the London Underground, which opened in 1863. The First American system is the Boston Subway.
Photo #2: The basketball hoop could be a clue about the Boston Celtics?
Photo #3: The apples could represent apple picking in Boston, which has the best apple picking and you-pick produce locations in Metropolitan Boston & Eastern Massachusetts?
Phot #4: There are so many historic buildings in Boston…where do you begin…I can only make out the last word on the building…it looks like HILLS…the building is on the water, which could definitely be in Boston?
So, I’m thinking I’ve tweaked all the photos towards clues identifing Boston, Massachusetts….Lots of firsts happened in American history in Boston!
The pics are from lft to rt clockwise-Toronto subway (The first subway was built in Boston Mass). Basketball was first started in Massachusetts. The first known apple orchard was from Boston Mass. The building is Seneca Knitting Mills from Seneca falls New York. Soooo these clues are obviously pointing to the New England area, and maybe specifically Massachusetts.
Basketball I believe was first established in Massachusetts-
Thanks for the second clue Mary. Off I go on my sleuthing-way to see what I can come up with.
What have I done wrong? Why am I always in moderation now? I have been good. Is this what happens to frequent bloggers? I guess I have been toooo chatty.
Got one! Basketball was invented years ago by an American named James Naismith. It began in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
I think it must be Maine or Massachusetts. Both beautiful states. I just want to take a moment to thank the HGTV staff and builders for all of the excellent work they do to bring us the green home and dream home drawings every year. I truly enjoy savoring every detail and the funny comments from fellow bloggers. I am sorry that some seem to lose perspective and forget that this is a random drawing where all have an equal chance. It is like becoming angry with the lottery because you didn’t win the mega millions.Congratulations to the lucky winner.May your win bring you much joy.
I figured out all the photos but the the 3rd and was kinda hoping someone would have posted something about the 3rd photo, but it looks like no new posts will be allowed today. I couldn’t wait and did a little research. I found out the 3rd photo is of the Seneca Falls Knitting Company. “The Seneca Falls Knitting Company along the Genesee River, Seneca Falls, New York is the only standing reminder of the Industrial Revolution”
“The Blackstone River (located in Massachusetts) and its tributaries…..was the birthplace of America’s Industrial Revolution…”
I am now sure all the photos are connected to Massachusetts in one way or another.
I have decided I am way too addicted to hgtv.com. I keep on checking to see who won, to see where the next location for the green home will be, to see what the floor plan for the dream home looks like. I have checked the website at least 3 times today! Anyone else have this problem lately?
Okay, now it looks like Massachusetts
Here are my answers for the American History firsts.
1. First subway line in Canada. Toronto Transit Commission subway.
2. This is the basketball hoop that Hands On USA volunteers played on at the Hands On Headquarters.
3. Seneca Knitting Mills Reflection (New York). First socks to go to the Moon!
4. Pomegranate – First cultivated fruits. 3500 – 2000 BC – Based on exavations of the early Bronze age.
Thanks you very much!! HGTV you rock!
Beverly J. Strickland
Long Beach, Mississippi
Hi again… on
2. This photo was taken on a Sunday morning under the Mississippi sky!
Have a great evening!
Beverly J. Strickland
Long Beach, Mississippi
Indian Orchard is a Green Community in Springfield Massachusetts..
I think that it is definitely MARYLAND!!!!
Phew! I am out of comment is awaiting moderation- First- In Springfield, Massachusetts a 30-year-old Canadian immigrant to the USA, James Naismith, was ordered to invent an indoor game for high-spirited young men at the School for Christian Workers (later the YMCA). Basketball…
Katydid, yes you are right!!! There were some very ugly comments and people attacking those of us who were there to befriend the Coffeys!! Just plain rude and sad!! My comment is still awaiting moderation from yesterday at 12:34pm,,,,where I mentioned that I am now more confused…but, ready for more clues. The subway from Toronto and the Mississippi ski, the Mill and the apple tree….more research needed…So, is it Massachusetts??? Mississippi keeps peeking in!! Good Luck!! Love life by living green!!
Have to agree with JBS really looks like Massachusett, just have to figure out the building.
Kat, mine too is “awaiting moderation”!!
I know I’m already right (it’s Mass). But where are you all getting Seneca from? If you enlarge the picture, it’s “Chelsea”.
#3 pict is pict of a factory which was making threads/socks for National basketball team, it is in NY satate
I think it might be Massachussets, correcting my mistake above : no satate, but state
Waterville, Maine!!!!!!! Believe old knitting mill is used by company in Maine. New England Basketball Champs 40’s. Apple picking in Waterville, Maine. Has Railroad. My guess Waterville, Maine.
“GREEN Eggs and Ham” author Dr. Suess was a native of Springfield, Massachusetts-I know that wasn’t one of the pictures..I had nothing to do when I was “awaiting moderation”
Nice to see familiar names again-Welcome back everyone!
Cindy you are too funny! That is good…”Green Eggs & Ham” will probably be part of Mary’s next set of clues…
Hi everyone. Feels good to be out of “time out”
Hi bloggers , Danny here , As much as I would love for the clues to point to MICHIGAN I think most of you are right about MASSACHUSETTS ! GREAT ! Another state I have trouble spelling , I guess I’ll go with the way Renee loves Green spells it since she’s hardly ever wrong. Why can’t they ever pick a state that’s easy to spell like OHIO or New york ? Their kinda fun to type out . lol. Danny
OOOPs! I was wrong–It is “Seneca”. I still think it’s Massachusetts. All the other clues point to MA. Does anyone know the history of Seneca Knitting Mill? Was it started by someone from MA?
I know it’s premature to say Massachusetts with Mary’s clues ( I would love to see the mental process that links all these pics to point to just one state) But anyway, I still think a hobbie farm would still be a great green project. How many people here came from a farm like me? Danny
WOW, so many folks zeroed right in on those clues, MARY:
1. 1897—Boston “T”, first US subway system
2. 1891—Springfield, first in basketball
3. 1630—Apples planted by MASS Bay Colony
4. 1844—Seneca Knitting Mills, NY made socks for the National Basketball League, AND, just one photo to plant a seed of doubt!
Onward fellow bloggers and avid researchers. The quest for the Green Home location at the end of the rainbow continues.
By the way, it’s nice to be back with fellow bloggers again after our little “dust up”.
PS: two of my already personal favorite Massachusetts locations would be in the Southwest portion of the Cape, around Falmouth and Mashpee. Will we have a “Cape Cod” style Green Home for 2010? Have to wait and see what clues MARY has in store for us next….
CINDY= That is Soooo Funny!!! –I Loved Dr. Seuss as a kid, especially (Green Eggs and Ham) HA HA HA
Diana
Falmouth is very nice, ferry to Martha’s Vineyard is there. We spend our short vacations in Falmouth every year, it is really cute little place, with great restaurants and fast access to MV!
Renee, glad to hear you again.
I think that it is important to have a moderator due those nasty comments. So we have to wait bc of those unruly ones.
In this era of internet and emails, people tend to think that they can say whatever they want without feeling guilty, but this is not true. People always need to keep the dignity, politeness, right?
Even some anger and frustration can be expressed in acceptable form, without insults, attacks.
I personally would go for Maryland -it is warmer there, Mass is nice, but colder…we will see…
If zz is correct and the building does say Chelsea, it fits Chelsea was the first permanet harbor in Boston area. Still looks like it will be Massachusetts.
Now, I know we need another clue but I did run across this…The PineHills is a master planned community in Plymouth, Massachusetts…sounds wonderful and vaguely familiar
Living the Dream!
no “zz” the Seneca Mill wasnt started by someone from MA. But…..Samuel Slater built the first successful cotton mill in the U.S. and he died in Webster, MA. so maybe thats a clue??? anyone agree?
Clues, clues, clues. The first set of photos: Archives, See the whitehouse, cherry tree, Valley forge. The other set of photos: Some old buildings appealing. My guess is
Washington State.
Love HGTV!!
Hi bloggers, danny here, Lynn,Marie,Renee how do you forword this info over to this site ? I’am new to this and I have all this info on hobby farms.Well,I have this HOBBYFARMS.COM I hope it’s intresting to you.It sounds like the ultimate healthy green lifestyle. Danny
Apple Tree–First grown in US at Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Basketball–Invented in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Cotton Mill–1814, first cotton mill in US at Waltham, Massachusetts by Francis Cabot Lowell.
Subway–Not sure, since 1st subway was built in NY City. Maybe picture is of train? I need to do more research.
What about: Branches building a goal someway.
Washington State.
Need more clues!!
Thanks HGTV!
It is Mississippi
Railroad photo clue:
The first Line to be properly called a Railroad was the Granite Line built in Massachusetts in 1826.
Clues:
1. Basketball–Invented in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
2. Cotton Mill–First built in 1814 in Waltham, Massachusetts by Francis Cabot Lowell.
3. Apple Tree–First grown in 1630 at Massachusetts Bay Colony.
4. Railroad–First Line to be properly called a Railroad was Granite Line built in Massachusetts in 1826.
If Boston is the location for the 2010 Green Home, wouldn’t it be great to get out of bed knowing that your floors are heated during those cold winter months?
What is going on with the blog? I keep getting a message that says: Comment is Awaiting Moderation.
It is definately Mass. The train picture symbolizes public transportation, the start of which is credited to Boston by the first publicly operated ferryboat in 1630 and first commuter fares on a railroad in 1838. Basketball, as someone already pointed out, has its origins in Springfield, MA which now is home to the Basketball Hall of Fame. The first apple orchard in North America was planted outside Boston in 1625. The picture of the building has me puzzled, however the evidence is overwhelming based on the other 3 pictures.
All of the clue points to Massachusetts
We were basically told from the first clue that the place where it begins begins with an M.
And since they were general clues, it was obvious to assume that they were talking about a state that began with the letter M. Practically 7 of the 8 pictures pointe d to massachusetts. Massachusetts has lakes with the vegetation shown in the picture! It has lighthouses (especially cape cod), Cranberries are a big industry in Mass as well as lobsters, Mass also has mountains and pinetrees as shown in the pictures, I mean from a general view it could be many places, but the next set of clue really gives it away, the first mill was in waltham, Ma , the first basketball game was played in Springfield MA, the first subway in the U.S was in Boston MA, and the pilgrims planted the first apple trees at Massachusetts Bay Colony. Everything points to Massachusetts!
My guess is that it will be located at Cape Cod, or Gloucester! I live in Mass and it is Beautiful!
I am so excited to hear more about the Green Home!
Dream Big!
Boston, Massachusetts. I am sure.
You have the apples, lawgirl said “1st basquetball game in there”,that building sure look very old.
Massachusetts, hopefully Cape Cop or Martha’s Vineyard
Danny, don’t worry about spelling Massachusetts, just spell it Taxachusetts like all of the natives do!

Show me, I agree it is definitely MA. I am sure Mean Mary will now throw in some clues like cacti to throw us off, if we solved the clues too quickly!
Now where in MA will it be. I was raised in a nice valley in MA & we used to visit my grandmother in Springfield often, but I would say it will be in the Eastern side of the state. That is where HGTV will probably find a gated community to subsidize most of the cost. I hope they use the Design on a Dime Team to decorate the whole house and put the rest of the decorating budget into energy saving features.
Well, here’s my latest thoughts. The subway is an underground transit system. The Underground Railway was very active in the lower Mississippi Delta Region. That fruit does not look like apples at all. More like pomegranates, grown in Mississippi.
I seem to be the last to post new ideas. Now I’ll see if my post will go into the moderation mode. Love this blog, and to whoever was worried about it closing….it says “closed on 1 July 2010…so we have lots of fun ahead of us.
Ahhh, thanks to W’s post for straightening out the spin on the Seneca Knitting Mills photo clue. As W. stated: Cotton Mill–1814, first cotton mill in US at Waltham, Massachusetts by Francis Cabot Lowell. Although MARY’s photo was of a knitting mill in Seneca Falls, New York, the tie-in is obviously to the FIRST cotton mill in the US. I don’t think anyone had made that direct connection to Massachusetts FIRST’s yet. That clearly makes Massachusetts a lock with four clue “FIRSTS” out of four. (By the way, W, Boston’s subway was first, opening in 1897, followed in 1904 by the New York Subway…which makes Massachusetts first in the final stretch by seven years.)
Lynn Coggin, I’d go for the Pinehills Community in Plymouth, MA any day. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. In some ways like the Florida “Tradition” communities, Pinehills has a Village Green as well, and is surrounded by many acres of lush greenbelt. By coincidence, Mr. Tony Green of The Green Company is a managing partner of Pinehills LLC. This upscale collection of developments, including custom homes, is south of Boston, near Cape Cod, and west across the Bay from Provincetown. Sign me up! Oops, guess I’d better wait to see where HGTV’s 2010 Green Home is going with MARY’s next clue(s).
And finally, just a quick hello to our Senior Editor, MARY, and wishing you smoother sailing in the days, weeks, and months ahead!
Yep, awaiting moderation. Mary, I think all the baddies are gone with the closing of the other blog. This awaiting stuff causes a lot of double postings. Give us a break, we’re the good guys.
Thanks HGTV for all the fun and all the great programs on TV.
If it really is in Massachusetts then they should be revealing the local soon. If it isn’t in Massachusetts, they are just toying with us again.
Hi all, I was very busy, then a bit under the weather the past couple of days & confused about all my awaiting moderations, so I need to take time to read all your past blogs. Or maybe just start again from here. Never saw the winner’s blog but guessing from your posts that’s why we’re all in moderation. Sad.
As for a few posts that sttod out as I skimmed thru – No, Mass (how native New Englanders get away with not spelling such a long state name & not have to worry about how many “s” & where) is no where close to boring – so much history & activity, especially in the east. Still trying to figure out where they would put a new home & how they would build there during the winter. Plus solar won’t be as easy for year-round (gotta keep the smow off the panels) so maybe we’ll get to see something new – geothermal or a small windmill?? Hopefully if the house is very close to Boston, it comes with a translator. I still remember growing up, my aunt (sort of pronounced like Aren’t without the “r” not like ant)would offer me a tonic (because a soda was the ice cream soda you would get at the fountain which was the snack bar area of a drugstore).
“As long as I retain my feeling and my passion for Nature, I can partly soften or subdue my other passions and resist or endure those of others.” – Lord Byron
Good nite all. Think of all the good that happened in your life today, rest well & wake to a glorious new opportunity to enjoy life.
Massachusetts! Apples from Western Mass, Basketball from Springfield, Boston Red Line and the Lowell mills. Lived in Massachusetts for 18 years. Would love a vacation home there for sure!!
Hi Danny! You can just copy and paste it. If you are on a website and want to post some of the information here…just right click, copy, and then come here, right click and paste….is that what you meant you needed to know?
Thanks for the website information!

These are fun!! I think I’ll stay with my original answer of MISSOURI!! LOL!! I like my chances of being right!!
-Your confident 2009 HGTV Super Fan!
OK..I think W. solved the “mystery” of the knitting mills picture and the connection to MA, thus all the photos point to MA. It has to be! ….but, then again HGTV is kinda tricky sometimes.
I hope we are right and it is Mass. – exciting choice – hope it is by the water
Okay – I grew up in Massachusetts and I believe that is where the new green home will be. The first picture is not a “train” per say but a subway system – Like the MTA in and around Boston, The basketball hoop is symbolic of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield right on Rt 91, The building is a Mill and Massachusetts had many textile mills from one end of the state to the other, there were many in Holyoke where they actually built a series of canals to operate the mills and last but not least, the apple trees, anyone who has grown up in Massachusetts knows of the many apple orchards in the area. I can still remember the taste of a fresh picked apple from the tree – we had 5 apple trees in our yard along with a peach, a pear and a cherry tree. The connecticut river valley (where I grew up) is very fertile farm land. So the obvious choice is Massachusetts.
With each comment having to be read before posting, I should try to keep my remarks as brief as possible, but try as I might, I’m afraid it’s a genetic flaw, MARY.
Lessie, even though I’m a California Native, I agree—heated floors during the cold winters would be great for cozy evenings or getting out of bed during the night, along with a warm, home-cooked breakfast waiting on the table first thing in the morning! I wonder if HGTV could arrange both?
(Sidebar to the 2010 Green Home designers: a comfortable, old-world study with garden views, please. After all, the Green Home IS built to order, isn’t it?)
Hi Bloggers, Happy Thursday!! Here’s some of my thoughts for the location. American history’s first president, George Washington. Washington state was named after President George Washington. State nickname: EverGREEN. Largest city: Seattle State song: Washington, My HOME. State flag: Only US state flage with GREEN background. State fruit: Apple. Keeping the letter “M” in mind, President George Washington’s wife’s name was Martha.
Just some thoughts, and keep the clues coming in HGTV!!
Night everyone,
Beverly
I am guessing Washington State…
Beverly
The state of Mass Confusion.
I think the Dream Green House is in the 6th state of the first of firsts Massachusetts
March 04, 2009 NBA Maine Basketball Announces Name the Team Promotion
NBA Maine Basketball announced today that with the help of the Portland Press Herald and the BIG JAB they are looking to their fans to help name the team. The team will also choose one randomly selected voter to receive two tickets to a 2009 Boston Celtics playoff game.
The Name they picked was “THE RED CLAWS” Basketball Team=The Lobster Picture and the Basketball Hoop??
I think HGTV want us to take the easy way and go to Massachusetts, the only problem with that is Taxes are very high…so I am going back to my orignal thought Maine —
And since we are all thinking about things that begin with the letter M-Time for a Public Service Message-Mammograms-it only take a few minutes-My Mother is a Breast Cancer Survivor-I had the biggest scare of my life last week, was suppose to go on Monday but chickened out and I was afraid of the test because I never had one-went on Wednesday and seems I just have an infection and it should go away with antibiotics, but the lady next to me wasn’t that lucky but at least she can get help instead of ignoring the problem….END OF MESSAGE..back to figuring out these pictures..*smile*
I hate to tell all of u but a few that you are soooo wrong! I,ve been a native of maryland all my 33 years and That is DEFINATELY in MARYLAND!
Tufts University to Plant Apple Tree Tracing Back to Newton
MEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — Legend has it that Sir Isaac Newton devised his theory of gravitation after watching a falling apple. Now, professors and staff at Tufts University are working to grow an apple tree that traces back to Newton’s English farm.
The apple is known as “The Flower of Kent”a coarse-fleshed cooking variety
Then again Michigan State Flower is the Apple Blossom..
First Saw Mill is in Maine
Bangor is mentioned in King of the Road, a country song by Roger Miller. The line goes “Third boxcar, midnight train. Destination: Bangor, Maine.” Southbound Train by Travis Tritt has a similar reference. This formula — using rhyming Maine and train
Also, author Stephen King is a resident of Bangor, Maine-maybe on that note I should read a book instead of Trivia about Maine. Now that I have really confused myself and others, Have a Great day! …
Vancouver is the place!!
I think it’s located in Massachusetts and I would be pretty excited if it was! We live in Mass and despite the New England weather, it’s amazing here and we want to stay in this area…We’re a family of four trying to save for a house and get out of apartment living, so I’ll definitely be dreaming huge if it’s where we are!!
I would say Missouri may be Saint-louis
Kat, where are u?? Are you going to go to the Dream Home Blog?? Would love to see you over there!! Collegemom, if the GH2010 is going to be in Boston, Mass. or somewhere in Maine, I think that you will be super excited…so you will have the cold that you love!! Lynn, thank you, I will check out The Pinehills!! GreenHomeFan, did they say that the State would start with a “M”, have a “M” in it or keep the letter “M” in mind?? I have read it over and over and now I am even more confused!! Kat, I am so glad that the rain is suppose to clear up this weekend…I want to swim in the ocean!! I haven’t been able to go in 4 days!!! CRAZY!! My son loves the ocean and oh, btw, his jellyfish sting is just about cleared up!! The marks on his skin took awhile to clear up…but, aloe vera is the best!!! Okay, on to do some research on the GH2010!!! So exciting!! Love life by living green!!!
My guess is Martha’s Vineyard, MA.
The only commonality I can find is Springfield, MA
Im Thinking they have now narrowed it down to 4 states starting with the letter “M” and the 3rd clue will narrow it down even further! Anyone think im on to something?!?
Definitely Massachussetts. Somewhere in the suburbs of Boston most likely. I’ve lived in the area most of my life and recognize the T. I just hope its within distance of public transportation to Boston. GO SOX!!
Me again – Massachusetts had the first subway sytem in the USA and the photo appears to be of the Fall River Knitting Mills which I just drove by on Friday in Fall River, MA. The fruit could have something to do with Johnny Appleseed who was born in Leominster, Massachusetts!
Hows bout Maine
Looks to me like it could be Maine. Lobster,Cranberries, and the Lighthouse
Harold: Loved your “Mass Confusion”. Very clever. That state certainly seems to be leading the pack right now.
Show Me: Could they add a fireplace to that comfy old-world study with garden view, if it is one of the northern states?
Marie Miller: Looks like where ever it is.it will have a view of a lighthouse. {new clue}. Oh, happy day.
MARY: Are you going to start eliminating the M states, maybe two at a time? Are you going to start it soon? Wish we had a time-table. Love you, sweet Mary and love HGTV for building another Green Home!!!
Ah, no more moderation!!!! Thank you, sweet Mary!
Ooops, I make the silliest mistakes. Meant time-line and on a previous post meant cuddle, not coddle. Sorry.
Ithink it is Massachusetts
I think it is Massachusetts . It has Apples , mass transit , baseball ,and old mills
The hoop and subway give it away – there are a ton of old mills in Massachusetts – I cannot pick out the variety, but the apples look like what grows here – I doubt it would be in Boston, or the Cape, island – ho large developement there – HGTV seems to be attracted to for gated communities with associations – will be nice to see being built, really want a warmer climate than this Cape Cod for winter……….
Not sure what 1st MA has regarding rail systems, because the 1st Subway in the US was built in 1904 in NYC. However, that does look like the “T”. Basketball Hall of Fame is in MA, because it was first played in that state at the Springfield YMCA and later Springfield College.
Apples, easy. Johnny “Appleseed” Chapman, born – Leominster, MA 1774
I haven’t quite figured out what the building is, can’t read the name on it.
Ok, the photo of the mill building is from Seneca Falls, NY.
It’s the Seneca Knitting Mill, built in 1844. Went to the photog’s flickr page and found it.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tonythemisfit/3253743593/#DiscussPhoto
“The Seneca Falls Knitting Company made all the socks for the National Hockey League, the National Basketball League and the first socks to go to the moon! Along the Genesee River, Seneca Falls, New York.”
Hello, everyone! I’m a Texan and have never been to Massachusetts; but, based on the photographs, that’s where I think the new Green Home will be. Actually, I’m not even sure I spelled it correctly.
If it’s any consolation for anyone, I did just spend 22 days in Celebration, Florida, with my daughter, son-in-law, and two year old granddaughter. We welcomed their newest little girl on June 14th!
Since it rained at least once almost every day, I discovered that Florida isn’t completely perfect—just almost the most perfect place to live in the US! It was wonderful! So, I think we can trust in HGTV to pick a fabulous location for the next Green Home!
I agree with everyone that it is Boston
1826: The first line of rails in the New England States is said to have been laid down at Quincy, Mass., 3 miles in length and pulled by horses.
Katydid – Love, love your suggestion of eliminating the ‘M’ states two at a time…kind of like the 50-50 Lifeline on Who Wants to be a Millionaire! Hmmm…maybe you could eliminate 50% of them Mary?!?!
Perfect!
Living the Dream!
