HGTV Green Home 2010: Third Location Clue

Will HGTV Green Home 2010 boast a lighthouse view? Photo by sneakerdog.

Having fun yet? I think you will enjoy cracking today’s clue — perhaps you will find it a bit more challenging than the first two photo-based clues.

And the clue for today is … the number 99. Ponder, make a list of possible solutions and post them below. Good luck!

  4. okay on a more serious note…Renee, I think that you are correct – and if so, it’s Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. I think that is the Domino Sugar Factory in the background. Have we really shifted from all those obvious MASS clues back to Maryland???? Evil, pure evil…

  6. Hi Mary! Well the photo is definitely the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse in Baltimore, Maryland!! Now let’s see the number 99….I do not believe there is a highway 99 going into Baltimore…can’t associate that is the year of Baltimore’s statehood of 4-28-1788..there is a soccer team of Baltimore Bays 99 Girls…don’t think that is it…can’t find any zip codes with 99…area codes are 227, 240, 301, 410, 443, 667..no association there!! Okay, I’ve got it…the 99 comes from the song, “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall!!” We know that Baltimore is well known for featuring classic styles of ale!!

    Okay, I’m stumped!! :(

  7. Remember what I said about those ambiguous clues…Massachusetts to Maryland…up and down those mighty dips and rises of the letter M!!! Where do they all associate?

  8. Keeping with my sports theme thinking:

In the National Hockey League, 99 has been the only number retired league-wide as of 1999, for Wayne Gretzky.

99 is the NBA record for Most Free Throw Attempts in a 7-game series, set by Elgin Baylor of the Los Angeles Lakers in 1962. In the fictional film Major League, Charlie Sheen’s character wore the Cleveland Indians #99 uniform.

Greg Moore’s Champ Car car number 99 was retired after his fatal accident.

In Cricket, it is considered unlucky if you reach 99 due to most batsmen getting out and not making the century.

Carlton full-forward Brendan Fevola ended the 2008 AFL season one goal short of the century, scoring 99 goals all season. In the same season, the Geelong Football Club recorded two 99-point victories, the first against Essendon in round two, and the second a win over the West Coast Eagles in round 22.

99 is the maximum jersey number a player can wear in the NFL.

Current Los Angeles Dodger outfielder Manny Ramirez wears the number 99, and is the first Dodger ever to do so.

NASCAR driver Carl Edwards drives the #99 Ford Fusion.

99 is a retired NHL jersey number previously worn by Wayne Gretzky.

  26. I think you should build a house in the south/southwest. We have heard about tamped earth homes (similar to adobe). They are supposed to be good with conserving energy. I would like to see HGTV build one with solar power. Central Texas would be a great spot.

  27. I would like to see HGTV build an apartment or condo building for senior citizens that incorporates unique storage and handicapped accessibility, lots of light. Seniors want to live green also. And just think if you built senior condos, several people could win instead of just one.

  29. MARIE MILLER – I think it is looking good for you…you are so going to get your lighthouse Dream Home!

I still believe it is going to be in Massachusetts. Minot’s Ledge Light is a lighthouse located on Minot’s Ledge, one mile offshore of the towns of Cohasset and Scituate, to the south of Boston Harbor. In 1843, lighthouse inspector I. W. P. Lewis compiled a report on Minot’s Ledge, showing that over 40 vessels had been lost due to the ledge from 1832 to 1841, with serious loss of life and damage to property. The most dramatic incident was the sinking of a ship with NINETY-NINE Irish immigrants, who all drowned within sight of their new home land. The first Minot’s Ledge Lighthouse was built between 1847 and 1850. Cohasset is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts and has some beautiful homes!

Okay, now, I know you are all thinking this is a stretch but guess what? LOL! So do I…yikes!

  30. Palmer Island, MA-(New Bedford/Fall River Area) To protect the lighthouse a 99-foot long seawall was built in 1852

After another restoration in 1989, the lighthouse soon fell victim to more vandalism. It remained dark through most of the 1990s.

In April 1999, Hillary Rodham Clinton named New Bedford an official Millennium Community of the White House Millenium Council. The national theme of the Millennium Council is to “Honor the Past and Imagine the Future.” It was decided that restoring and relighting Palmer’s Island Lighthouse would be one of the city’s Millennium projects. Arthur P. Motta, Jr., the city’s Director of Tourism and Marketing, was also an important force in the restoration effort.

  31. The light house is in Baltimore Maryland. It is call 7 foot knoll and was built at the mouth of Patapsco River. Later it was moved to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

    Maryland has route 99.

  32. GlennNYC: Yep…I think the 99 represents 99 ways HGTV has stumped us…we will have to rely on Coop to pull us out of this one!! He’s good at pulling rabbits out of hats!

LynnCoggin: Do you think? I would love to see my lighthouse Dream Home built..in Massachusetts would be perfect…now I have to think of 99 ways to convince the planners at HGTV!!!

I can relate more to the 99 being in massachusetts as Route 99 is a north-south state highway in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Its southern terminus is in Boston’s Charlestown neighborhood, and it proceeds north from there to U.S. 1 in Saugus. So, what does the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse in Baltimore, Maryland, have to do with Massachusetts?

    Still confused!!!

Marie Miller on July 2, 2009 at 12:25 pm
  33. 99??? I don’t know. But the first thing that comes to mind is Agent 99, from the movie Get Smart. Of course, I am sure that the clue 99 is NOT referring to the movie Get Smart………so I will have to do some research, until I can come up with a better idea.

  34. Hey, one more quick thought……..99 bottles of beer on the wall. Probably not, I will need to keep thinking and come up with a better answer.

    W. on July 2, 2009 at 12:28 pm
  35. Well, from the 2nd set of clues, the pictures and American firsts, HGTV Green Home will be located in Massachusetts. Massachusetts has a Route “99″ (the 3rd clue) that begins in the Charlestown area of Boston and I think, terminates in Saugus. So somewhere along highway 99 in Massachusetts is my best guess so far.

  36. It is definitely Maryland and here are my thoughts…Cranberries grow in MD, the lighthouse is the 7′ Knoll in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore, the building in the background is the Baltimore Public Works Museum…previous pics could be the rolling hills of MD where it is known for horse country, definitely crabs and lobster, I also believe the other lighthouse shown in the first pic of all pics is the lighthouse at Hooper Island which guards and lights the entrance to Tar Bay and Hooper Straight. I lived in MD for several years and I have a good feeling it’s going to be someplace in MD!

  37. HGTV,
Wherever you will decide to build any house, please, pay attention to flood areas, to areas which might be under water if waters will be rising up due to global warming.
there is a cool map you can estimate the oceans taking the land : http://flood.firetree.net/?ll=43.3251,-101.6015&z=13&m=7

    1meter = 3.2 feet
    7 meters = 22.9 feet

Massachusetts is nice, Maryland is nice.

If the Green Home is in Maryland and I’m the Super Fan, I won’t be able to enter the contest!!! Hmmmm, the Super Fan payoff better be really good for me to give up this opportunity.

Of course, if I won the Dream Home in New Mexico, I’d think that’s a sufficient payoff. Let me check the Super Fan guidelines. :) Just kidding, maybe….

  41. I am so very confused… I looked on this website not more than a few weeks ago and it stated that it was no longer a surprise and that it was going to officially be in New Mexico. So it would be my assumption that they are trying to get us to figure out specifically where in New Mexico. Is this not the case???? Did I miss something? Has the state it is located in been changed? Or am I correct, it is definitely in New Mexico somewhere, and the question remaining is specifically what city?

  45. I don’t know if anyone thinks that lighthouse in Baltimore is a great color red…but I do! I would love to paint our storage shed in our backyard that exact color red…so…since I already have my Investigator hat on, I thought I’d try to find out the color. If this is of no interest to you, now would be the time to skip this post and move along to the next comment which may be much more interesting and will probably pertain to this thread topic. LOL!

Through my research I found that it is Safety Red, Federal Shade 21105. Hmmm…I guess it would have been too easy to find out it was ‘Lighthouse Red’ by a retail paint manufacturer. Moving on, I found that it is a government issued color and that the numbers ‘21105′ all mean something. The ‘2′ means that it is a semi-gloss paint. The ‘1′ means that the Predominant Color Grouping is ‘red’…okay, got that. The last three digits, that being ‘105′, are assigned in the approximate order of increasing reflectance.

There are special requirements for Safety, Highway, and Camouflage colors. This particular ‘red’ meets the requirements for Safety Colors.

There is a list of 47 different pigments used in color chips of standard colors. Each pigment is assigned a number. Are you bored yet? I love, love, love to get down to the nitty gritties of things like this…paint colors are right up my alley!

Anyway, the pigment colors assigned to ‘Safety Red, Federal Shade 21105′ are Rutile Titanium Dioxide, Perylene Vermillion, Quinacridone Red (no surprise there), and Carbon Black (Blue Shade). It is approved by the government and can be used on historical structures, hence the color of the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse in Baltimore which is part of the Baltimore Maritime Museum!

SOOOOO, that’s what makes ‘Safety Red, Federal Shade 21105′! Phew…now I can sleep tonight! LOL! Well, maybe I can take this to my local paint store and review this information with them and paint my shed this weekend?!?!?!?!?! I’ll let you know!

The Basketball Hall Of Fame is located in Springfield. 1891: The first basketball game was played in Springfield.

    Textile History
Located in an 1814 textile mill recognized as America’s first factory, the museum (Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation) vibrantly explains the significance of textile manufacturing in the context of our country’s industrial development, social systems, and attitudes toward work.

The centerpiece of this gallery is a scale model diorama depicting the factory complex in 1825. Here you’ll see the original layout of the factory along the Charles River, the waterfall and canals powering the mill, and the worker’s housing within earshot of the factory bell.

The pilgrims planted the first United States apple trees in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

The cranberry, along with the blueberry and Concord grape, is one of North America’s three native fruits that are commercially grown. Cranberries were first used by Native Americans, who discovered the wild berry’s versatility as a food, fabric dye and healing agent. Today, cranberries are commercially grown throughout the northern part of the United States and are available in both fresh and processed forms.

The name “cranberry” derives from the Pilgrim name for the fruit, “craneberry”, so called because the small, pink blossoms that appear in the spring resemble the head and bill of a Sandhill crane. European settlers adopted the Native American uses for the fruit and found the berry a valuable bartering tool.

  51. Long ago, lobsters were so plentiful that Native Americans used them to fertilize their fields and to bait their hooks for fishing. In colonial times, lobsters were considered “poverty food.” They were harvested from tidal pools and served to children, to prisoners, and to indentured servants, who exchanged their passage to America for seven years of service to their sponsors. In Massachusetts, some of the servants finally rebelled. They had it put into their contracts that they would not be forced to eat lobster more than three times a week.

  53. Related to Naval Academy I guess: Massachusetts had an official naval flag during the Revolutionary War. It was white with a green pine tree and the motto “An Appeal to Heaven” and was adopted in April, 1776. Since “flags” at that time were all naval ensigns (the cloth things on poles carried by soldiers on land were “standards”, not “flags”), Massachusetts was the first to adopt a state flag.

Your research skills are awesome! I think you deserve an HGTV home in your area, but not this time. :)

I can’t give first hand blogger reports if the Green Home is in Mass. Only if a regular blogger promises to give first hand reports will I step aside. Otherwise, I’ll spend time with the Super Fan as she tours the 2010 Green Home in Maryland.

  62. Whew, what a busy day, and I have so much catching up to do.

Taking care of old business first, and jumping back to clue #2 for a moment:
the first TEXTILE mill in the US was built in 1787 by John Cabot in Beverly, MA. It was horse-powered, with 126 spindles, carding equipment, and looms. In 1814, Francis Cabot Lowell built America’s first “FULLY INTEGRATED” cotton mill at Waltham, MA. (That is, all operations were machine-powered and could be done under one roof for a finished product.) Take your pick; they were both Massachusetts firsts.

I’ve been in contact with folks at the official Commonwealth of Massachusetts website to be sure to add those “firsts” to their online list! They have responded gratefully. (I’m passing on those thanks to you, MARY, for without your photo clue, a grave injustice could well have remained undetected for many years to come!)

I haven’t even had time yet to get to clue 3 (with the bold lighthouse photo and the mysterious number 99 teaser) so I hope that other serious truth seekers will continue the quest without me for a while longer.

And by the way, as has been said before, it seems that great minds sink alike, since my first thought about the “magic” number 99 was referring to bottles of beer on the wall! I can hear it now—what wall, where? Are there any breweries in MA?

Until we meet next time, I’ll be singing “99 bottles of beer…”

Nebulous as clue #3 may be, I’ll detail my three quick search results. I think real progress will have to wait for devious clue #4 or even clue #5.

    1. Mashpee, MA—section 99 on the Assessor’s Tax Map.

    2. Duxbury, MA—May ‘09, the lacrosse team’s 99 game winning streak was broken.

    3. Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, MA—alexcheeks photostream (Flickr) titled “Vineyard 99″ of Edgartown lighthouse.

Do I think any of those three are strong contenders? Not really!

As a throw-in, Massachusetts’ official State Dessert is “Boston Cream Pie”.

Are we ready, willing, and able to tackle clue #4? Sure, MARY, bring it on!

  72. Lynn Coggin,

Maryland is a beautiful state, even though I’m not a native. I live between DC and Baltimore.

Since you and others have submitted videos for the 2010 Super Fan, I think I’ll just tag along and give the blogger perspective if the Green Home is in Maryland–sort of the role lovelykitty had for the 2009 Dream Home.

Hopefully we can meet in NM and you can give me a first hand tour of the Dream Home — I promise not to reveal anything before HGTV does. Does that mean I’m not allowed to post any of the pictures I take during the tour? Guess not. Will hold them until the great reveal on Jan 1, 2010!

  74. When you’re number 99 there’s a target on your back. It’s like Norm of the TV show “Cheers” said to Sam Malone as he walked to his usual bar stool after a long day: “You ever feel like the world’s a dog, and you’re wearing Milk-Bone underwear?” That’s how No. 99 must feel!
    This is hard!

  76. This is Fun Mary!! I still think it’s Missouri (MO)!! LOL! I think that 99 refers to boats, docks & the water. I was second guessing that it could be Maryland, but that arch is a St. Louis original that I am not familiar with anywhere else!! Thanks so much Mary & HGTV!! HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!!

  77. Poe Reef Lighthouse
    Cheboygan, MI. Lake Huron

Many attempts were made to position a lightship here[3] but those all failed. Four different lightships served beginning in 1893: Lightships Nos. 62, 59, 96, and No. 99.

  78. Okay here goes…Michigan starts with an “M”. IT has lots of resorts and vacation home areas on its beaches. Macomb County is the 99th county listed on the counties map and in Macomb County there is a town called New Baltimore. Michigan also has many firsts in American History if you look at articles about Black History Month , you will find Michigan had the first black teacher, first black superintendant, first black judge, etc. What do you think??????

  83. I think it is the Inner Harbor of Baltimore maryland. Maryland Route 99 is a 7.6-mile (12.2 km) section of Old Frederick Road. Patapsco Valley. Just taking a wild guess, would it be, 2199 Marriottsville Rd or Head east on MD-99/MD Route 99/Old Frederick Rd toward St Johns Ln. I know everyone says I am crazy to even do this.

  87. “99″ restaurants are based in Woburn, MA, the first location – the waterfront is not real familiar and I know almost every location on the MA coast, ah, but wait, there is a large developement in Plymouth, MA, may be suitable for the HGTV community setting – will even venture to say “Pine Hills” in Plymouth MA – but then again, we are just guessing……….now I get to check out Plymouth and Fall River harbors, maybe the Nantucket Lighthouse, now floating in Wareham………

In clue one: We are faceing east in the gateway arch picture. Massachusettes has lakes, mountains, although not that big, Lobster, Canberries, Lighthouses, forests and apple trees. Maine grows cranberries but it’s not well known for it. Blueberries are another story!

  111. Diana – The photo above is definitely the 7 Foot Knoll Lighthouse in Baltimore, Maryland. It was originally located at the mouth of the Patapsco River (on Chesapeake Bay) – but was later moved to to the Baltimore Inner Harbor as a museum.

  112. The photo above isn’t a clue, it’s just a teaser photo. The 2nd location clue features 4 photos, 3 of which were directly linked to Massachusetts.

    1) Photo of a subway system(happens to be Toronto), but Boston has a Subway
    2) Basketball Hoop in Mississippi: invented by Dr. Naismith and first played at the Springfield YMCA and Springfield College, not to mention that the NBA Hall of Fame is in Massachusetts as well.
    3) Apples: John “Appleseed” Chapman, born 1744 Leominster, MA
    4) The photo is of a Knitting Mill in Seneca Falls NY, but the first textile factory in the USA was in Waltham, MA

  116. CATHY MAINE (IAC)= Alright!!!! I had a strong feeling that it was you!!!! I’m Glad that you are Back!!!!!! I was Hoping that you’d come back at some point— especially because it may be in New England!!!! I don’t blame you about the log-on. When I was blogging with the Sonoma Home (first time with HGTV) —- my (log-on) had my last name—- and then I realized that my blogs were posted on the whole entire WWW—- so I changed it, just to my first name!!!!!

I’ve got to tell you about JAMES HOOK. You definitely steered me to a Great Restaurant!! I never did order the lobster ravioli. We had them a while back( made somewhere in Monterey, CA)— and I just didn’t like them. They were tasteless and fishy-smelling.

But—- I ordered Maine Lobster from JAMES HOOK. I’ve got to tell you— my Dad totally freaked out that they were “Alive”. He made me take them down to the local fish market to have them “prepared” for cooking—- LOL, the fish market thought that I was being “silly” too!!!!!

They were Delicious, and the BEST that I Ever Had!!! I will be ordering from them again—- Marie Miller, Ed from Oregon, and DB Coop gave me good advice how to handle live lobsters—- and I’ll just find a way to “get over it”!!! I’ll just be strong and try not to feel guilty—-LOL LOL

Cathy— one thing, they also shipped me complimentary clams, too. I will without a doubt—- definitely be ordering clams— probably frequently. In Florida, you cannot get clams like this—- bottom line— no where. The clams in Florida are tiny and small, and most won’t even open up after cooking. They are not like the clams from the North East—- so we also enjoyed spaghetti with “Real” Clam Sauce—- a delicacy that we just could never, ever, ever get in Florida, like this!!!!!

  120. As I questioned myself yesterday, are there breweries in Massachusetts? Sure there are, so talking about 99 bottles of beer, is a clue linked to breweries really off the wall?

After all, there’s the Boston Brewing Co, which is maker of the well-known Samuel Adams beer, among others. And as Cindy also commented, there’s that famous “Cheers” quote: “When you’re number 99 there’s a target on your back. It’s like Norm of the TV show “Cheers” said to Sam Malone as he walked to his usual bar stool after a long day: ‘“You ever feel like the world’s a dog, and you’re wearing Milk-Bone underwear?”’ That’s how No. 99 must feel!”

Could this be the answer to MARY’s infamous clue “Number 99″? That is, Boston? Stay tuned, folks; it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

MY KNOWING GUESS IS……..BALTIMORE MARYLAND!!!!!! Seven Foot Knoll, 1856. Inactive since 1987. 40 ft (12 m): 1-story round cylindrical wrought iron keeper’s cottage crowned by a round cylindrical lantern and gallery. Lighthouse painted dark red, lantern black. Originally mounted on a screwpile foundation near the entrance to Baltimore Harbor, the lighthouse was relocated in October 1988 to Pier 5 on the Inner Harbor waterfront, where it is now a familiar landmark. Located at the end of Harbor Magic Drive off Pratt Street in downtown Baltimore.

  126. The Industrial Revolution of the US began in the northeastern states. That would explain the factory photo clue.
The 1st subway system in the US was built in NY city. NY city is in the northeast. So my best guess would be that the 2010 Green Home is going to be built in ME, MA, or MD.

To add to my previous and last guess, “It is going to be built at the Waverly Woods Golf Course on Old Hwy 99, i.e. Old Frederick Rd. in Baltimore MD.”; The Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse was originally located at the mouth of the Patapsco River and then moved… The Patapsco River Valley runs right by the Waverly Golf Course on Old Hwy 99. So, this only substantiates my guess…

  146. Since the 2010 Green Home will be in the Bay State of Massachusetts, most likely not too distant from Boston itself, I think we should take a good look at the Whitman Homes company (developer/builder) with offices in Canton, MA. They have a number of great projects around the coastal communities: The Pinehills in Plymouth (with its Duxbury Pier lighthouse, built 1871); The Hummock, Carver, MA; The Bay Club, Mattapoisett, MA (at Buzzards Bay, with another lighthouse at Ned’s Point); Shining Rock, Northbridge in central MA; or the Evelyn Estates of Canton, MA.

The Pinehills community in Plymouth, with custom build homesites available in the Ryecroft, Island Rock, and Pinecobble developments, sounds delightful. (Don’t forget the Duxbury Lighthouse, visible from Plymouth Harbor.)

The Bay Club at Mattapoisett is a stunning planned community with all of the most desirable lifestyle activities, including a yacht harbor in nearby New Bedford. (The bonus is another lighthouse, at Ned’s Point, built in 1838.

So will one of these developments be in the cards for the 2010 Green Home? More shall be revealed (we hope) by coming attractions (or distractions) in the form of clues from our sneaky Senior Editor.

Take it easy on us, MARY; we may have had a very active 4th of July weekend.

  150. Moondoggy could it be your planning a Green Rehab in the North End of Boston as in ‘Little Italy’… the absolute ultimate in inner city living, the history, the mom & pop ristorante’s, the friendly faces, the entertainment, musica, no doubt a place ready for upgrade in Green design.

Oh and just maybe a ‘Wise-Guy’ or two standing out on the sidewalks smoking a wonderfully aromatic cigar.

Mama Mia’s Goombah, Mm mm I can smell the Italian sausages and pizza-pies now. Vieni fra le mie braccia. We shall see…

I can hear the Rat Pack singing… let me get my snap-on! Everybody Loves Somebody, Return To Me… la la laaa la la… Ciao, have a safe holiday his/your hotness.

  153. Hello, everyone! I’m a Texan and have never been to Massachusetts; but, based on the photographs, that’s where I think the new Green Home will be. Actually, I’m not even sure I spelled it correctly.
If it’s any consolation for anyone, I did just spend 22 days in Celebration, Florida, with my daughter, son-in-law, and two year old granddaughter. We welcomed their newest little girl on June 14th! Since it rained at least once almost every day, I discovered that Florida isn’t completely perfect—just almost the most perfect place to live in the US! It was wonderful! So, I think we can trust in HGTV to pick a fabulous location for the next Green Home!
Happy Fourth of July to all!!

elizabeth on July 4, 2009 at 1:17 am
  161. You know what, it is not St. Paul Minnesota, It is Baltimore Maryland. That is where it comes to my mind. I have friends that once took pictures and I remember now, It is Maryland. That lighthouse i seen somewhere, I am pretty sure it is in Baltimore Maryland , in Baltimore, or surrounding areas, it is Maryland. 99 percent., amybe 99.9 percent. Happy 4th to all

  166. CHARLOTTE NOEL= Ymmmmm I’m getting hungry, but too early in the morning to think about home-made pasta, delicious tomatoe sauce, juicy large clams, sweet and salty lobstah—

But, this is Debateable— and Controversial. Do you think that Boston’s North End is “Better” than Manhattan’s “Little Italy”???? I don’t know, I really don’t.

Personally, when we went to NYC’s Little Italty– we weren’t too impressed. Except for this Bakery that was there—- OMG, to die for— because I’m such a Chocolate Junkie, I opted out for Mile High Chocolate Cake, instead of a Italian pastry— I know, I know, what was I thinking? I can’t help it– I’m a choc-o-holic, it’s my weakness.

They all say, of course, that Boston’s “China Town” is Better though—

    LOL LOL LOL

  170. CATHY MAINE (IAC)= Lynn Coggin is around— she’ll be back soon I’m sure— You know, Lynn Coggin came up with a great idea— she posted it on the “Dream Home” blog.

Her idea is, for bloggers to meet in Albuquerque, NM for the “Annual Balloon Festival”. Sounds like a Great Idea. It is sometime in October. Keep checking back— maybe this could be a great “vacation idea”.

  172. CATHY MAINE (IAC)= You mentioned that you are working on an “Ancestry” project. I don’t know if you know this, but do you know that the Mormon Tabernacle Church in St.Lake City, Utah has ALL of the ancestry records?

I only know this, because I had a co-worker once who told me all about it. There is a Library down the road from the Mormon Tabernacle, that has ALL of the ancestry records— even records from Europe.

I tried this once— but not using any websites or anything—during a college class– the last family name that I have was traced to Yugoslavia. I thought that was interesting.

  175. I would bet to say the home is located in Marriottsville MD near Alpha Ridge Park. Alpha Ridge Park is on Route 99 which runs just over 7 miles long. July 19 2008 a GreenFest was held at the Alpha Ridge Park featuring a dozen Green Companies. In MD, on Route 99, nearby recognized Green Companies…… its possible… the homes in Marriottsville …. not at all shaby…

  176. I do know that, but thank you. There are so many places to look. I have great software that will help me cross reference and I can access many sources online, including the Church of Latter Day Saints. I have done a lot of mine – pretty impressive. I am working on my supervisor’s family now.

Getting ready to go meet my folks for lunch. Have a great Fourth! Are you doing anything special today?

    Cathy/Maine(iac) on July 4, 2009 at 8:34 am
  177. I should have mentioned Diana – speaking of MA. Some of my ancestors came there and then settled on Chebeague Island. I took a ferry trip to the island to see the old homestead and the gravesites of my great great great grandfather who served as a Minuteman. His grandson was a fisherman who was lost at sea. The story is much like “The Perfect Storm”. His brother survived to tell the story to the Boston newspaper. Many of my ancestors either were lighthouse keepers and builders of lighthouses. Two of my ancestors are said to haunt a lighthouse in Florida that their father was building (they drowned there) – The Pittee girls. Some of my ancestors have been traced to the Massachusetts Bay Company. So you can see why I am such a strong advocate for MA :) even though I am all Maine(iac)!

  178. Hey Coop: Maybe it is possible that Charlesburg Builders, LLC, will be the builders since it is my understanding that they specialize in ‘Gream Homes?’ I have not had time to research it, so I might be barking up the wrong ‘tree!!’ :)

Not much time to post lately with the 4th of July celebrations!! Hope all of our blogger buddies are enjoying a safe, happy & explosive holiday…HAPPY 4TH OF JULY my friends!!! :)

  180. I think its Massachusetts. The lighthouse within Massachusetts is a War Memorial for all veterans upon the state’s highest peak of Mt Greylock. Yes, a Lighthouse upon a mountain top. And yes it would be nice to see a yurt type house or a geostructure to built!

Laurie on July 4, 2009 at 9:56 am
  181. Looks like Maryland to me. Picture of the Inner Harbor of Baltimore.

Maryland is known for seafood, mountains, cranberries, apples, sailing, lighthouses, beer, baseball and trains.

Been to Boston, Maine as well as Michigan and Maryland is it.

  183. I still think it will be in Maine. Now on the off subject of geneology, here is the website http://www.familysearch.org. Anyone can volunteer online to search and interpret census records from around the world and US, using their own computer, I have done it, and it is really fun and quite interesting. The LDS church then makes that info available to everyone to research there roots.
My family has their geneology done clear back to at least the 1400’s.

    Loved your ancestral story Cathy.

  185. Okay…. my guess is also MI. Mass makes sense too but I have a sneaky feeling that it may be Michigan. such as in one of these places… http://www.newhomeguide.com/Green-Communities/Michigan/Detroit-area/
I know they grow apples there too- I live close to Mi border- have been to a few nice apple orchards. And look at this http://www.absolutemichigan.com/dig/michigan/michigan-cranberries-cranberry-farming/
They also have the coast guard on the lakes up there as well as some lighthouses.

I am usually wrong though with my guesses so I will not be suprised if I am wrong again. :)

  191. I appreciate all the different comments and advice and I know everyone wants to win each new house and rightly so, and blessings to the one who God knows needs it most. I’m just thankful that we can even enter in these sweepstakes and we get just as excited every time as everyone else. But one thing I’ve learned is to send in some mail ins and enter on line. That way if they show the drawing, I won’t give up immediately if it is a mail in or on line winner. I will still have hope, not that I have a lot of confidence that I will win but I will at least have more confidense until the end, also not saying that is any better because if it is mail in or on line I won’t have that anticipation for as long and can get on with life. On to the next contest.
This one is especially appealing to me because we already live in NM so we wouldn’t have far to move. I’m not going to bore everyone with our stories because I’m sick of repeating them, mainly because it is unjustice all the way around and there was nothing we could do but we have a beautiful home already and I’m thankful to God for it so if we don’t win then that’s okay. I would just like a place that my family could be close together, we’ve been pulled appart for so long. But again God knows what’s best so I pray blessings to all of the entries and hope the rightful person wins, and they will. YEAH!!! Ahead of time. Good luck to you all.

  199. The next Location should be in Torrance, California so that my young family can own a home for the first time and my daughter can have a home to grow in. So HGTV’s Dream Home 2010 should be given to someone who really needs it. No one in my family owns any land, I am someone who truely needs a fresh start in a home to call my own.

The rules and regulations will be posted on the first page of the Dream Home website and, in previous years, you can enter online and/or by mail…Hope this helps! In addition, next year’s Green Home contest will be after the Dream Home sweeps is over.

CATHY MAINE(iac) & DIANA – Oh my gosh…I’m a little verklempt…you two noticed I was gone and chatted about it…so touching…really! I was thinking of all of you also…it’s funny…I was sitting around with my friends this weekend and found myself telling them all about my blogging friends! So, they now know what state you guys live in…they know about your ancestry project CATHY, and about you, your lobsters and your dad DIANA! I found myself sharing our friendship with them…pretty neat!
