HGTV Green Home 2010: July 4 Clue

Hi all … and Happy Independence Day!

Today, to celebrate this important holiday, I’ve decided to post another photo-based clue. Note about the number 99: it’s not a road of any sort, but a head count.

So here we go … See if you can tell me how these three images relate to the the 2010 location.

  7. Hmmmm 99 refers to headcount….I remembered that yesterday someone posted something about 99 Irish Immigrants who died due to a shipwreck of the cost of MAssachusetts yesterdays…so I went back and checked and it sure enough Lynn Coggin posted it. I found the info below on the US Coast Guard Website, under “US Coast Guard History” Here is some of the info:

The first lighthouse in the country was built in Boston

Perhaps no light was more challenging than the granite tower built off the coast of Massachusetts on Minot’s Ledge.

The rocks along the coast of Cohasset, Massachusetts, claimed many ships and many lives in the early part of the 19th century. Between 1830 and 1840, 40 ships sank in this treacherous area. Perhaps the greatest tragedy came shortly before a lighthouse was completed when the steamer St. John ran aground in an October, 1849 storm and 99 people were lost, mostly Irish immigrants.

Cohasset is in Norfolk County. I-95 runs through Norfolk County. Another interesting tidbit: the town has a total area of 31.5 square miles, of which, 9.9 square miles of it is land and 21.6 square miles of it is water.

Thanks Mary for the holiday clues!

Happy and safe 4th of July to All!!

  8. That is one ugly sea creature!!! But I am very happy to see that the next Green Home will be on the East Coast(US Coast Guard clue). Interstate 95 runs up the East Coast, through Maryland, Massachusetts, and Maine. I am excited for this home to be built, since I love the upper East Coast. A great place to live!

  12. THANKS MARY !!! I can tell that she is just as Excited about this as we are— she very rarely “posts” on the Weekend!!!

Thanks, Glenn NYC- Cohasset may be a possibility— interesting tidbit. It must be a small town??? Can’t find it on the map.

(I’m sooooo excited!!!! If I lived in Massachusetts— I’d probably eat lobster and clam chowder every day!!!!)

There’s a map below— 1-95 runs right through Massachusetts— up to Maine. It looks like Vermont and New Hampshire are out of the picture.

  15. GlennNYC, great investigation work!! Okay, I am even more confused … I researched a few new “green” communities in Maine and Maryland that seem to fit the 2 original GH’s!! Can’t wait to see and hear more!! But, today is a day to enjoy and celebrate!! So, to all of my blogging buddies, Have a wonderful 4th of July!!! Love life by living green!!

  16. The top picture is of a Horseshoe Crab not a stingray. They are known to be in the Delaware Bay which is part of the waterways at Baltimore. There is also a ship in the Inner Harbor which I believe is one of the Coast Guard Ships as a museum. “US Coast Guard Cutter Taney #37, the last ship floating after the attack on Pearl Harbor; now a museum ship in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor”. That plaque is known all over to commemorate the Coast Guard, and it is possibly posted at that ship. And I-95 runs right along the coast of Baltimore and tunnels under the bay..so doesn’t it stand to reason that the HGTV Green home will be built either in or near Baltimore? I stand by my guess, and believe it to be right..right? Mary?

Glenna Calton on July 4, 2009 at 2:25 pm
  17. Well, who would have guessed; clue #4 coming to us on the 4th of July!

Thanks to GlennNYC for picking up on Lynn Coggin’s response to the “number 99″ clue. I’m usually careful about going back to read all of the previous posts, but missed that all important post by Lynn, to my chagrin.

It seems that MARY’s number 99 clue was of a more serious nature than 99 bottles of beer, being as 99 lives were lost in that shipwreck off of Cohasset.

So, reading up on Norfolk County, the one thing I find most interesting is that it is actually non-contiguous; that is, it’s broken up into three parts! A separate piece of the County, to the east of I95, holds the city of Brookline, just west of Boston proper. The bulk of the County, of which I95 travels through (as GlennNYC noted) picks up on the western boundary of I95 with the city of Wellesley, continuing west to the city of Bellingham, south to Plainville, and northeast to Weymouth.

The coastal city of Cohasset makes up the third “piece” of Norfolk County, separate from the other two pieces. How unusual.

For some less serious business, Coop has allowed me to post his morning’s work from the Dream Home blog which is entitled:

    “A Weary Blogger’s Lament”

99 bloggers with clues to resolve,
    99 bloggers with clues,
    figure one out,
    until there’s no doubt

98 bloggers with clues to resolve,
    98 bloggers with clues….

As Coop mentioned, let’s hope we don’t get down to one blogger remaining before we figure out MARY’s latest secret location clues.

    Happy 4th of July.

  18. GLENNA CALTON= I’m glad that you pointed that out. You know, at first, the picture didn’t look like a stingray to me— but I was just going with the flow. The only time that I’ve ever seen a real stingray was at a tourist attraction at the (Mandalay Hotel) in Vegas— a few years ago, and could have sworn that stingrays looked different.

You are absolutely Right— I “googled”, and it is a Picture of a Horse Shoe Crab! No Doubt

    I found this out:

” Massachusetts’ current Horseshoe Crab Quota is 330,377 annually, second only to New York’s at 366,272. ”

    http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080401/NEWS/804010318

“Massachusetts’ current horseshoe crab quota is 330,377 annually, second only to New York’s at 366,272. Delaware is one of the states that has cut back its harvest, setting its quota at 100,000. Delaware harvested 76,663 horseshoe crabs last year, a more than 75 percent drop from 2003″

  20. According to GlennNYC and Glenna Calton, this clue could be Mass or Maryland. Both make good points.

Trish, what’s the site for the GREEN home description you shared? Want to check it out. Is it in Mass or Maryland?

Lessie on July 4, 2009 at 3:14 pm
  21. Trish, no need to respond. I read your posts and found the answer. Thanks for sharing.

Mary, thanks for your July 4th clue. Glad you thought about your favorite blogging community! Enjoy your day.

  22. Today is a sad day, We just got the news flash that Steve McNair, former quarterback for the Titans has been shot and killed in his home at Lee and 2nd streets in Nashville. Please pray for his family in this time of need. :(

Glenna Calton on July 4, 2009 at 4:34 pm
  23. The first photo resembles a stingray, but I do not think that a stingray has claws, and I do not think that the body of the stingray separates the way this animal does in the photo. Maybe it is a rare type of stingray. But if it is, I cannot find a photo of it anywhere on the internet.

    W. on July 4, 2009 at 4:54 pm
  24. Yep, the 1st photo is definitely a horseshoe crab, as someone already mentioned. I did not think that it was possible, because the photo makes the crab look huge! It must just be the camera angle.

    W. on July 4, 2009 at 4:59 pm
  25. Ha ha – Show me, I love the “A Weary Blogger’s Lament” – very clever – but now I can not get that tune out of my head! Although it certainly beats the 99 luftballoons song that I had stuck in my head since yesterday morning when I read Mary’s “99″ cluey…

GlennNYC on July 4, 2009 at 5:41 pm
  26. Still going to Maine… I-95 Kennebunk, Maine-There is Goat Island Light-runned by the Coast Guard It is Horseshoe Island (kennebunk County)-I would love it to be Massachusetts because my 1st and only year at college was in Boston (you mean I was suppose to studied?-Best Year of my life!)

Cindy on July 4, 2009 at 6:23 pm
  27. It has to be Maine or Massachusetts. I know both! I 95, Coast guard… history.. and yes both have horseshoe crabs… are really good indications. I am already loving it!!!

Debbe on July 4, 2009 at 6:32 pm
  28. I was thinking that the 99 clue could refer to a “Catch 33″. There are 3 M states on the upper east coast…and if each state had a “Catch 33″, then that would add up to the number 99. (MA, ME, MD)

    W. on July 4, 2009 at 7:13 pm
  29. P.S. A “Catch 33″ could refer to catching 33 fish. A fisherman in Maine, Massachusetts, and Maryland each caught 33 fish……..that equals 99!

    W. on July 4, 2009 at 7:30 pm
  30. OK..So, I’ve seen this post twice referring to Plum Island as being the next site of the HGTV Green Home. It is right off I-95. But, if this is true, Plum Island is also the home to the Animal Disease Center. Seems an odd place to build an environmentally conscious place considering the reputation of the center. (You all may also remember the reference to Plum Island in the movie “The Silence of the Lambs”).

I’m still going with the coast of MA, just not sure whereabouts… I HOPE it’s the northern coast of MA…

  31. GLENNA CALTON= I saw it on the internet just now. It is terrible, and what a horrible thing to happen, especially on a holiday. I will be praying for his family, and his girlfriend’s family too.

I watched the news video clip, and I think it was the Chief of the Police in Nashville discussing it. Unfortunately, right now, they don’t have any leads regarding who did it.

  32. “With some fava beans and a nice chianti..??”
I say NO to Plum Island
I-95 hits these main cities, Baltimore Maryland, Boston, MA, Kittery ME, Augusta ME, Bangor, ME and Houlton, ME
So we are back to ME, MA, or Maryland all coasts that the Coast Guard protects..

Cindy on July 4, 2009 at 9:40 pm
  33. W= at first I thought it was a sting ray too, but I knew that it somehow looked a little different. GLENNA CALTON thinks that it is a (Horseshoe Crab)— and she is Right— it Definitely is.

I “googled” it, and saw these sites—- it looks Identical to the pic above

  36. ZZ= Silence of the Lambs? I don’t even like thinking about that movie, so late at night!!! I swear, every time I see that movie— I have nightmares for many nights!

Did you ever see Part 2? It wasn’t as bad as Part 1— but it was bad enough– I’ll be doing a check in every room of the house now, LOL LOL LOL

About Plum Island— I googled it, and I hope that it’s not there either. It looks very nice— but it seems that it basically is just a Vacation Area Only, with no major roads running through it— not convenient if you need to commute for work.

And Silence of the Lambs? Hannibal the Cannibal? Who knew? I’m getting the creepy- jeepies

  37. All the clues are beginning to add up—building on clue #2, my interpretation of clue’s #3 and #4 so far: refers to a suspicious procession of 99 Horseshoe Crabs found by Coast Guard cutters cruising the Cohasset Harbor just off Minot’s Ledge Light. Stopped and questioned in the name of Homeland Security, the 99 Horseshoe Crabs said they were looking for the shortest route to I95, which they hoped would lead them straight to the 2010 Green Home location. I wish them lots of luck!

  39. CINDY= Yes, it is very sad. It was on the news that the quarterback for the Tennessee Titans was shot dead in the head (they think last night or early this morning). The news said that he and his girlfriend were both found around 1:00 this afternoon at his girlfriend’s condo, both shot.

The news said right now— they don’t know if it’s either:

    1. murder- suicide, or
    2. burglary

They don’t have any leads yet at all. It was a news video clip from CNN that I saw on the internet. = but Glenna Carlton blogged about it earlier.

A cold-blooded murder is bad enough, but on a holiday? That’s terrible for their families. Sometimes it involves a drug deal or a tangled romance, but– I hate to say this, but sometimes, the culprit was led to do this out of “jeolousy or envy”. Pretty sick, huh?

I know, I know the state of New Hampshire, (my home state), where we “Live Free or Die” does not begin with an “M”, however it is nestled in between two of the “M” states, Maine and Massachusetts, and is the perfect site for the 2010 GREEN HOME. Alas, when I win it I will not have far to go!!! My guess, is Portsmouth, NH.

  44. Ninety Nine was founded in 1952 when Charlie Doe opened a pub at 99 State Street in Boston, Massachusetts.

Starting In September 2006, Ninety Nine Restaurants became refreshing their restaurants looks called Dressed to the Nines. The restaurants held a two week silent auction to take off the plaques and other pictures. The 99 reasons were launched with the new Dressed To The Nines look. The refresh was completed by the end of June 2008 in about 75 locations by now, the original 99 logo was extinct but can still be seen at a restaurant in Fall River, Massachusetts. The 99 reasons eventually replaced all the plaques and pictures.

  50. CATHY MAINE(IAC)= I knew that you’d come up with Something Good!! Thank God! and CINDY= good info. So far, I’m counting on the research that GLENN NYC did too, about the Irish Immigrants (something that LYNN COGGIN blogged)– but where can we find that info.?

My wrist started hurting last night— the “99 Number” has been drivin’ me nuts! I “googled” the Number 99 and Head Count 99 for both Mass. and Maine, but didn’t come up with anything significant.

Except— a big celebration in Maine, unveiling the New (99 DDG) Navy Ship and US Coast Guard Ship— but that still has nothing to do with a head count.

  51. CATHY MAINE (IAC)= By the way, you came up with some fascinating info. with your ancestry— that’s unbelievable, and how you even traced some ancestors to Florida, too.

Just now, “Ancestry.Com” popped up— and I just now typed in my grandmother’s name— and it gave the correct county and year when and where she died. One of these days, I’m going to do this. I was going to do it 2 years ago– because my friend was going to Salt Lake City on vacation and asked me to go with her and her family—- but then that never panned out.

Went to see the Fireworks last night— it was fun

  54. The Lighthouse Service constructed an iron skeleton tower on the Minot’s Ledge between 1847 and 1850. The engineers believed the open columns would allow the sea to pass below without resistance

    Cathy/Maine(iac) on July 5, 2009 at 8:41 am
  55. the St. John fared only slightly better, losing at least 99 passengers when it smashed on the rocks near Cohasset, Mass. Hundreds came to see the wreck, including Henry David Thoreau. “I sought many marble feet and matted heads as the cloths were raised,” he wrote, “and one livid, swollen and mangled body of a drowned girl — who probably had intended to go out to [domestic] service in some American family.”

    Cathy/Maine(iac) on July 5, 2009 at 8:57 am
  56. On Sunday October 7, 1849 the Irish brig St. John was shipwrecked off the coast of Massachusetts near Cohasset. The ship was a “famine ship” loaded with emigrants from Galway, Ireland who were escaping the devastation of the potato famine, heading to America and, hopefully, a new life. This ship wreck, the worst in Cohasset’s history, would have an impact on families on both sides of the Atlantic. And, in a strange twist, the wreck would also affect one of Concord’s native sons, Henry David Thoreau, and the story of the St. John would become one of his most gripping essays.

As the brig entered Massachusetts Bay that Sunday morning it encountered a severe coastal storm. The ship’s master, Captain Martin Oliver, dropped anchor two and a half miles off the coast, hoping to ride out the storm. But the St. John’s anchors failed to hold and the ship was washed onto a submerged, rocky ledge- known locally as the Grampus Rock- with devastating results.

Stuck between the rocks and the pounding surf, the St. John’s hull was quickly torn apart, with terror-stricken emigrants being washed into the sea. In a panic, the crew began to cut away masts and sails in a desperate attempt to lighten the ship, but their work was useless; the St. John stayed on the rocks. Within an hour the hull was in pieces, and parts of the ship — as well as the bodies of her passengers — started to wash up on the beaches of Cohasset.

In all, 99 persons died when the St. John went down. There were some survivors, including Captian Oliver, but these numbered only about 20. Many of the victims were from the counties of Galway and Clare and the loss of life affected many families. In fact, whole families were wiped out; emigrant Patrick McSweeney was drowned while trying to save his wife and nine children; none survived.

Two days later on October 9, Henry Thoreau and Ellery Channing left Concord for a trip to Cape Cod. This was to be Thoreau’s first visit to the Cape. Having been “accustomed to…excursions to the Ponds within Concord” Thoreau now decided to “extend [his] excursions to the sea-shore.”

  57. Show Me, great version on the “99 bottles of beer” song!! And I love your tall tale on the 99 Horseshoe Crabs… I am sure that they didn’t have the proper documentation so the Coast Guard must love Horseshoe Crabs to give them directions to the I-95…Ok, I am on to do my research…And, a personal note… I am so happy that it did not rain yesterday….the day was beautiful at the beach, lots of swimming and then later watching the fireworks coming from ships out in the ocean…BEAUTIFUL!! We are so lucky to live here in Florida….This is a wonderful place to live!! I hope that the Coffeys move to Port St. Lucie and enjoy the GH2009!!! They will not regret it!! They are very lucky!! I mean entering only 5 times and winning…they are so lucky!! And it just goes to show you that when it is suppose to happen for you…then it does…no matter how many times you enter or if you enter by mail or online!! This will be my 11th year and I am still excited and motivated to continue…I hope the GH2010 has an hydroponic, organic garden!! Love life by living green!!

  58. CATHY MAINE(IAC)= OK, Thank You— this all makes Sense now, and gives the “Number 99″ real and factual Historical signicance. (At first, I was equating it with the Immigrants who arrived in Ellis Island in N.Y., and I was trying to make sense out of, OK, what does the number of people arriving have to do with this?) LOL

THANKS—- I’m hoping for the Cohasset or Quincy Area.

There’s a town also called “Hull”— Is that why it was named Hull?

Is there going to be a Party??? I hope so. My cousin called me yesterday, she just moved to West Palm Beach in a new house, and she’s wondering when I’m going to come and visit. I told her about a Possible Party, etc… we’ll have to keep watching the blog for any postings.

Florida is very nice, you can’t beat the weather. It is the warmest state in all of the country. I may, though, for business reasons, either live/work (Temporarily) in New York, Boston, or California for a while. I won’t be doing this until January, though. I have to check some things out. If fate leads me to Boston or Mass.—- trust me— I’ll be keeping “tabs” on the building of the Green Home—- yeah!!!!

  66. Oh my!! I must apologize for my less than serious nature of my guess of the 99 bottles of beer! Without the new clues, it seemed like a useful guess!! However, if the clue does relate to the 99 lives that were lost in that shipwreck off of Cohasset, I have sadness with that clue!! Minot’s Ledge Light is a lighthouse located on Minot’s Ledge, one mile offshore of the towns of Cohasset and Scituate, to the south of Boston Harbor, in the US state of Massachusetts!! With the comments produced by Lynn Coggin, GlennNYC & Show Me I am confident that the next Gream Home will be built in Massachusetts!! Yes!!! But where? According to Wikipedia, “Cohasset is located on the “corner” of the South Shore, where greater Boston Harbor ends and Massachusetts Bay begins. The shore is rocky, with many small ledges and rocks lying offshore. Cohasset Cove and The Gulf provide a long portion of the border with Scituate, while Straits Pond divides Hull from the town on the northwest. Near the center of the coast lies Little Harbor, a large inlet divided from the ocean by Beach Island. Several other brooks and rivers run through the town. A large portion of the southwestern part of town is occupied by the Wompatuck State Park, formerly the Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot Annex, and the Whitney & Thayer Woods Reservation. There is also a bird sanctuary, as well as a large park (Wheelwright Park) near Little Harbor. There are three beaches along the bay, and the Cohasset Yacht Club and a public boat launch in Cohasset Harbor.”

Another source of information regarding the photo of the Horseshoe Crab is that there has been spawning of the Atlantic horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, in Pleasant Bay, Cape Cod, Massachusetts!! There are a number of Chatham-managed town landings located on Pleasant Bay which offer boat launches and some smaller swimming beaches!

The highway 95 sign throws me…. I-95 makes its way around metro Boston, passing through Dedham, Needham, and Wellesley?

So, where oh where will my Gream Home be built? Where or where can it be? I will make my guess:

Maybe, Heritage Estates!! “This is a high-quality subdivision with lots having sold for $450,000 to $600,000! The entire subdivision encompasses an 18.27-acre tract of land, averaging 1.3 acres per lot. The subdivision was designed with two cul-de-sacs and has direct access to the George M Ingram Park across Beechwood Street. The three existing homes are of a shingle-style design and are in keeping with the character of the homes in the area.”

“Cohasset is a tight knit waterfront community known for ties to the sea, with its significant boating population. The community is also one of the most picturesque communities in Massachusetts with beautiful beaches, including renowned Sandy Beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean!!”

The Cohasset Maritime Institute is getting back to its roots – and the town’s – with a project to restore an old, wooden lifesaving boat. The 26-foot surfboat, which is “a big, fat bathtub meant to hold a lot of people, and very stable,” said project organizer Jack Buckley, came from the Hull Lifesaving Museum.

more stories like this”It’s symbolic of the lifesaving that took place in this area,” Buckley said of the boat. “In 1807, Cohasset had the first official lifesaving station, on a place called Pleasant Beach between Rocky and Sandy beaches. And Hull became the most famous station.”

  75. MARIE MILLER= Of course, as usual,— Excellent Research too!!!! I thought the Same when I looked at the map, and you can see how 1-95 breaks off and by-passes the area of Cohasset. 1-95 in more inland, and not along the coast. I don’t necessarily think that means anything though. Once you exit— probably not too far. At least 1-95 is not too far away, and it is there, comparing it to another highway, like 2-75 (which is only on the West Coast off of the East coast, I think)

  82. The United States Coast Guard is this nation’s oldest and its premier maritime agency. The history of the Service is very complicated because it is the amalgamation of five Federal agencies. These agencies, the Revenue Cutter Service, the Lighthouse Service, the Steamboat Inspection Service, the Bureau of Navigation, and the Lifesaving Service, were originally independent, but had overlapping authorities and were shuffled around the government. They sometimes received new names, and they were all finally united under the umbrella of the Coast Guard.

Although the Revenue Cutter Vigilant was the first cutter to be launched records concerning when she actually entered service were lost in the fire at the Treasury Department in 1833. Tradition has it that the cutter Massachusetts, launched in July 1791, was the first to actually enter service as a commissioned vessel of the U.S. government.

  95. I now know all I ever want or need to know about the spawning patterns and mating habits of the horseshoe crab. So in light of that, I thought it fitting to offer every Green Home blogger a unique challenge :

A web post by the Massachusetts Audubon Society provides an opportunity for the winner of the 2010 Green Home to help ensure the survival of the horseshoe crab. For those interested, please read the following:

“The Atlantic Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus) has been crawling ashore to mate on full moon nights for about 350 million years, and Mass Audubon is looking to ensure this ancient rite of spring continues.”

“In Massachusetts, horseshoe crabs are harvested to be used as bait for the eel and conch fisheries, and their blood is the source of a chemical used to test medical devices and injectable drugs for toxins.”

“In collaboration with the University of Rhode Island, the National Park Service, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, and others, Mass Audubon is beginning a three year survey of spawning horseshoe crabs. At a number of sites around the Cape and Southeastern Massachusetts, scientists and volunteers will be counting the number of adult spawning horseshoe crabs on and around the new and full moons at high tide.”

“We need your help! Please volunteer today to help preserve these very special creatures.”

(Maybe if one of the Green Home bloggers calls up to volunteer, they can get some inside information on the next Green Home location!)

  96. The most noted spawning grounds for the Horseshoe Crab or King Crab is on the shores of Delaware Bay or on Long Island New York.
The state of Maryland extends to the coase just south of Delaware. The Baltimore Harbor Light (historic names include Baltimore Harbor Lighthouse and Baltimore Light), is a privately owned caisson lighthouse in the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. First lit in 1908, it sits at the mouth of the Magothy River, marking the channel which leads northwest to the opening of the Patapsco River, which then leads into the Baltimore harbor. At the time of its construction, it was the world’s tallest caisson lighthouse. In June 2006, Baltimore Light was sold at auction to private owners by the General Services Administration for $260,000, the COAST GUARD maintains rights to operate a light on the structure.
Of course I-95 goes through Maryland.

Glenna Calton on July 5, 2009 at 2:55 pm
  97. Just a technical point, Marie Miller (and my opinion)—keep in mind that in her search for appropriate clue images, our devious Senior Editor MARY will post photos intended to REPRESENT or SUGGEST A LINK to the item or location being pictured. WHERE the photo was taken is often irrelevant. This is what trips up so many of the Green Home bloggers in their research, and has them hopping from state to state depending solely on where the photo was taken. The Lighthouse clue, for example, almost certainly DOES NOT mean MARY wants us to start looking around in the Baltimore, MD area.

Since the four “first” photos most certainly pertain to Massachusetts, THAT is the area where subsequent photo images, regardless of where they are taken, should be leading us to search.

“Bear” in mind that MARY is not going to make the search so easy for us that she will post a photo clue from or even near the ACTUAL item or location. (Unless of course, after my comment, she does so just to pull a fast one!)

As I’ve said before, hold on folks, it’s going to be a bumpy ride….

Lighthouses, beaches (with or without horseshoe crabs), the Coast Guard, and I95: unravel those links as they relate to MA, and each other, and you’ll at least be CLOSER to the answer.

Show Me The Green on July 5, 2009 at 3:16 pm
  98. Show Me: OMG…you have been hanging around Coop so long, you are starting to sound like him…and, much to my chagrin, you are absolutely correct…why would Mary make it that easy for us? Where the photos were taken must be irrelevant, but the subsequent photo images do play a strong clue as to the identity of the area!! I was certainly trying to play them all together to no avail!! Anyway, thank you for your expert advice as I do appreciate your ability to apprehend the inner nature of things and/or seeing intuitively!!! Thank you!! :)

I’m going to stick to my guess of ‘Cohasset!!’ This beautiful waterfront community ties to the sea, and is one of the most picturesque communities in Massachusetts with its beautiful beaches, including renowned Sandy Beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean! This is the perfect setting for my Breezy Coastal Lighthouse House Plan!! :)

  99. P.S. Has any one of the Green Home bloggers called in to volunteer to help preserve those very special creatures, the ‘horseshoe crabs?’ I’m really thinking about it, especially since ‘Show Me’ thinks they just might give out some inside information on the next Green Home location! :)

Marie Miller on July 5, 2009 at 6:25 pm
  100. Show Me, are you saying don’t look around MD? But look around Mass? We know Mary is very tricky. Even if she gave out the initials BM, we could still be looking at Baltimore, MD or Boston, Ma. I don’t believe Mary would reference a clue to 99 lives lost. Too sad. So, what is the 99 “head count”? You have hinted at “bears” before, That leads me straight back to Michigan. But the horseshoe crab has me stumped. Oooh, just thought of a great song…next post.

Diana: Aren’t you afraid to sit out on your patio at night….the vampires might get you. I tend to get nightmares from real situations, not the kind Hollywood makes up to scare us. Sleep tight tonight knowing it’s all make believe.

  103. I’d like to thank the many inept historians and writers for conflicting accounts, or simply for failing to detail the more important facts surrounding the Pilgrim’s landing at Plymouth, MA. I’d previously looked online for information in this regard, to find that numbers didn’t always agree from site to site, but generally they stated that the number was more than 100. However, after Cindy’s post about “99 Pilgrims”, I thought THAT’s something to really research more thoroughly. This is what I’ve been able to uncover (aside from the fact that most writers don’t seem to consider it an important point, online or in print—it’s like pulling teeth to get the info):

According to “laughtergenealogy” and “Annieshomepage” (same quote)—”Although 102 Pilgrims sailed from England, one died and another was born during the voyage. So 102 reached the harbor at Provincetown, MA.” (Which was the Mayflower’s first, and temporary, stopping point in New England.) Four more died and one was born there.

So, the end result: the group that actually LANDED AT PLYMOUTH consisted of 99 Pilgrims. THERE we have MARY’s number 99 headcount, finally. I’d be inclined to bet the farm that this is the magic 99 we were intended to discover, eventually.

So, where do we go from Plymouth, the Coast Guard, and I95? Get on your marks, Greenies (Green Home location researchers), get set, Google!

  108. Whoa, Diana!—it took me just a second to catch the Gov Mark Sanford comment, but that’s a GOOD one! I got quite a laugh out of it, and you’re probably right, another vacation could be on the agenda for him very soon!

Ahem, and back to serious business: as to the Coast Guard clue (now tying in to Plymouth), look to the Gurnet Lighthouse (also known as Plymouth Light) which is the oldest fully wooden lighthouse in the United States. It was built on land privately owned, for which the government paid five shillings for the right to build. Gurnet Lighthouse was ceded to the US government in 1790, the year the Coast Guard in its earliest form, was created. The Coast Guard then owned and maintained the lighthouse until 1989, when it was leased privately, but once again reverted to the Coast Guard. In May 1999, the light station was leased to the “Project Gurnet and Bug Lights” group, which had also restored the Duxbury Pier Light (visible from Plymouth Harbor). The Gurnet Lighthouse was converted to solar power in 1994, and remains an active aid to navigation.

Attention Marie Miller and fellow lighthouse fans: the former keepers’ house can be rented by the week or month!

Does this mean we get to go back to the Pinehills community of Plymouth? What about the I95 clue? More shall be revealed, one way or another!

  110. Great research everyone! I too had problems when trying to research the number of people who came over on the Mayflower – so thanks Cindy and Show me for digging deep into that one

Here’s another little something to add to the mix: Coast Guard Beach, MA located on the Cape. When I researched it I found this historical connection between the Mayflower and Coast Guard Beach:

    Mayflower Landfall
On November 9, 1620, a ship named the Mayflower, 65 days out from Plymouth, England, made her landfall in the New World at what is now Coast Guard Beach. Captain Jones, knowing that his Pilgrim passengers were supposed to settle in northern Virginia, headed southeastward. Although he stood well offshore to avoid shoal waters, his ship soon became enmeshed in the worst shoals in the area, Pollock Rip. A miraculous change of wind enabled Jones to sail his ship free of the shoals, and he then turned northward to anchor in Provincetown Harbor, November 11, 1620.

Okay, since I feel a little bit like a ship lost in the thick New England fog…hopefully, Mary will be a good lighthouse keeper and answer our distress signal with a new clue…

  111. Great idea, Trish. We can refer to ourselves in secretly coded blog posts as “Agent 99″, and MARY won’t know one poster from the other (although our posting names MIGHT give us away.) And we can all drive around in those micro “Smart Cars”.

Speaking of driving, here’s a MAYBE point about the I95 clue to consider: The first USCG station was in Newburyport, MA, and is the site of the USCG Academy, next to I95, about 38 miles north of Boston.

Newburyport, in Essex County, also includes part of Plum Island, and there are the nearby towns of Newbury and Old Town Newbury as well.

I don’t know if that area is a strong contender for the 2010 Green Home, but anything’s possible at this point. (My personal bias is towards the south of Boston, but more because of the historical significance of Plymouth, the beauty of the surrounding countryside, the scenic coastal views, and its lighthouses than anything else.) Plus its closer to the Cape.

Now let’s see if MARY can further confuse us with more of her infamous clues!

Once again, I think it’s time to start singing that old HGTV bloggers’ lament:

“99 bloggers with clues to resolve,
    99 bloggers with clues,
    figure one out,
    until there’s no doubt,”

“98 bloggers with clues to resolve…”

focus in Woods Hole is on ecology and restoration of Buzzards Bay. This with the connection to rare horseshoe research “LAL” seems like a good guess. The subway and basketball may be pointing to MA. My home town and the only way I am getting home is if I win. Pricey$$$$$

  115. one more guess since I am nocturnal these days I seem to have the blog to myself. I see that MD and MA have horseshoe tracking program. The MA is at Waquoit Bay between Falmouth and Mashpee on Cape Cod. I think I am a bit biased for it to be the Cape but a remote possibility. The hint for 99 and firsts. Well Boston has a lot of firsts. And Springfield, MA was the first basketball game. So she may be narrowing in on Cape Cod before long. I hope.

PEABODY — The city is the first among 15 Massachusetts communities to officially join a cooperative that will allow Peabody to benefit from wind power. Peabody is the largest investor, with an 18.1 percent share.Wakefield’s share is 9.1 percent

The wind farm, the first in the state to be owned collectively by a group of municipal utilities, would provide enough power to supply 6,000 homes.

  124. The lighthouse in the previous clue gives it away. That lighthouse is in the harbour of Baltimore, Maryland of which I-95 runs through. The lighthouse was donated to the city by it’s previous owners, the U.S. Coast Guard. If I’m not mistaken the CG has the Cutter Taney on display there as well.

  126. Taunton Bay is a shallow embayment estuary linking the towns of Hancock, Sullivan and Franklin in Hancock County. As a sheltered oasis at the heart of an increasingly commercial sector of Maine’s scenic coast ,Taunton Bay is a unique and self-sustaining natural area largely undamaged by human intervention. Once known for its timber, mining, quarrying and shipbuilding industries, the bay is now valued mostly as a lovely rural residential setting. It is also home to an abundant wildlife population and has been designated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service as a Class A Wildlife Habitat. Bald eagles, great blue herons, osprey, loons, harbor seals and horseshoe crabs all live and breed here, and dozens of species of migratory shorebirds, ducks and geese rest or winter in the bay. The bay also supports a variety of fisheries for marine worms, clams mussels, scallops, crabs and lobsters.

  130. Coast Guard in Maine
The United States Coast Guard has a long history in Maine, dating back to its founding in 1790. The Coast Guard is charged with so many missions, one wonders what don’t they do on the water? Some of their activities include:

    Aids to Navigation (ATON)

All of the bouys, lighthouses, range lights, fog signals etc. on federal waters are installed and maintained by the Coast Guard. Needless to say, with literally thousands of bouys, this is a major undertaking.

When you are out on the water you may see Coast Guard vessels servicing these aids. You can tell CG vessels used for this purpose since they are painted black. For a complete list of all ATONs in Maine, see the CG Light List.

One of Maine’s most famous lighthouses is Portland Head Light, which is open to the public.

    Law Enforcement (LE)

As the United State’s premier maritime law enforcement agency, the CG has since its founding been responsible for enforcing our customs and immigration laws on the water. Today the mission has expanded to include fisheries law enforcenent, marine mammal protection, and general enforcement of federal laws and treaties.

You should be aware that at all times. the CG has the authority to board a US vessel anywhere in the world as well as all vessels in US waters. Prior to conducting a boarding the uniformed CG boarding team will inform you of their intentions and identify themselves. Initially they will conduct a safey inspection to identify any obvious safety hazards and ascertain the seaworthiness of your vessel. Assuming no problems of violations are detected, you will be issued a yellow copy of the official boarding report. If however violations are found, you will be issued a white copy which may be either a notice of violation or a warning. The procedures to follow will be explained by the boarding team and are also printed on the reverse of the white copy.

    Search and Rescue (SAR)
Hopefully you will never find yourself in peril on the sea, but if you do, the CG is vigilant 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The best way to contact the CG is via a marine radio on channel 16.
Once contacted, the CG will assist you in finding someone to help you with minor problems such as running out of fuel or, if the situation warrants, dispatch a CG unit, be it a motor lifeboat, cutter, helicopter or airplane to assist you. The CG has a proud tradition of saving lives in all weather and sea conditions.

  131. Have you ever visited a Greenbelt property?
Greenbelt owns and manages over 200 properties in Essex County.

    www ecga org

The Essex County Greenbelt Association is a member supported nonprofit land trust that has conserved over 13,000 acres of land in Essex County. Greenbelt works with local communities and landowners to acquire and protect ecological areas, farmland and scenic vistas. One of our major goals is the creation of “greenbelts” consisting of river, trail, and other natural corridors, coastal systems and visually intact landscapes.

  132. Great sleuthing everyone, I’ve enjoyed reading the research & the songs. Haven’t been spending much time online lately, looking at a house to move to (think it will raise my chances of winning instead of being in a condo? Have all previous GH & DH winners been in homes, or have some been in multi-family units?). My online time has been spent researching how to possibly get rid of this flu (swine? won’t go to doctors, no big pharma for me) & get my voice back & hopefully full mental faculties, thinking too much gives me headaches right now so I’ll leave the clue research to all you healthy bloggers. I like the 99 Pilgrims more than the 99 Irish victims, that would be a morbid clue. Anywhere in New England or Maryland would be a great place to raise children. I remmembeer school trips to Mystic Seaport, Boston’s Freedom Trail (Paul Revere’s house to the Old North Church), Sturbridge Village & more. Made sense to me that school trips were educational. When I lived in Las Vegas, I was surprised that their school trips were to Disneyland & Universal Studios, aren’t those supposed to be vacation sites?

Renee, isn’t it amazing how the rain stopped the afternoon of July 3 so we could enjoy the weekend? I watched at great fireworks display sitting in the backyard of the house in Golden Beach I think we’ll move into. It will be so nice to have a yard again where I can sit in the sun. Maybe then I’ll have a chance of enjoying the great Florida weather without leaving home and have a few spots where I won’t be under constant mosquito attack. Maybe my immune system was repressed from all my blood donations. Remember those pests in MA, ME & MD, so hope there’s another screened porch on the GH.

Ok, seems there’s no poems or quotes on this topic, so since we know it’s on the east coast (3 of 3 green homes), here’s a poem on the Atlantic:

    Atlantic Ocean
    by: Nathan Stewart Sloan

    The waves roll in,
    Making a sound from heaven
    On the sandy shores.
Soothing my soul, healing my spirit.

    Powerful and Beautiful,
    Blue and white lace.
    Causing death, Causing healing,
    This beautiful beast.

    The wind on the waves
    Whispering to the human heart
    It’s soothing tunes,
    And thundering threats.

    Its salt heals the decrepit.
    Its sound heals the broken-hearted.
    Its sunrises an example
    Of the master painter.

  133. So much GREAT information from my favorite bloggers!! Especially like the research revealed about the 99 head count regarding the Pilgrims!! I have to say I am going to stick with my guess of Cohasset…did you now the nations’s very first lifesaving station was in Cohasset, Massachusetts? And, the underwater hunt for a sunken lighthouse was off Cohasset Harbor. They were looking for what’s left of Minot’s Ledge Lighthouse, which collapsed into the sea in 1851 during a violent storm. Light keepers were part of the original Coast Guard!

I’ll post more later…I have an appointment early this morning! I bet Mary will post something new while I’m gone! Keep up the great work to all the “Super Sleuths!!”

  139. Okay…so remaining in MASS for the moment and building off of Show Me’s Plymouth reference and navigating the housing community waters in and around Plymouth… The Pinehills Master Planned Community” in Plymouth MA would seem like the perfect setting for an HGTV Green Home.

    From Wikipedia:

The Pinehills is a large, mostly residential development located in the Pine Hills region of Plymouth, Massachusetts. As of 2008, the project is the largest new residential and commercial development in New England.

The community consists of over 1,000 luxury houses, apartments and condominiums, two golf courses, a country club, and the Village Green, a small commercial center with shops and services.

It is still under construction. When completed in 2014, it is expected to contain close to 3,000 homes and stretch over an area of 3,060 acres (12.4 km2), an area larger than many Massachusetts towns.

The houses in The Pinehills are broken into several small neighborhoods. Homes are designed by one of nine different builders, the largest being Thorndike Development and Whitman Homes.
    END

The Pinehills community sounds a lot like the Tradition Master planned community with the Village Green serving as the center of the community with shops, stores, community gathering places, etc.

Okay that’s my 2 cents for today…obviously we still need much more info to go on to narrow down the search…

The Pinehills in Plymouth, Mass Wins Grand Award for “Best Mixed-Use Community” in the Nation

Award given at 2006 Builders Choice Design and Planning Awards

PLYMOUTH, MA — The Pinehills received the Grand Award for “Best Mixed Use Community” in the United States from Builder Magazine at the recent 2006 Builders Choice Design and Planning Awards. Founded on the idea that some land is appropriate for preserving and some for building, The Pinehills is unlike any other master planned community. More than 2000 of the 3000 acres of rolling hills and pine forest remain as open space with homes oriented to views of woods, water and golf, giving this “new” community a timeless quality.

“This year’s winners, including The Pinehills are innovators in the industry and serve as an inspiration for other builders and architects,” said Boyce Thompson, editorial director of Builder, the leading magazine for the residential building industry. And innovative it is!

The newest village center within the historic town of Plymouth, Massachusetts, The Pinehills serves both local neighbors and residents of the community. From choosing “red or white” at the wine shop to take home with the dinner purchased at the café, to shopping for the perfect frame, window treatment or furnishing, to running errands from bank, to post office, to florist, to cleaners, the village green is the heart of the community. This vital center is also the place for browsing at “Art on the Green” in the spring or dancing to jazz and blues in later summer and, offers both neighbors and residents access to a variety of professional services.

The Pinehills provides exceptional recreational amenities as well, from miles of walking paths and nature trails, to two daily fee golf courses, to the Stonebridge Club where friends meet to swim, play tennis, take a class or simply enjoy sitting by the fireplace. It is truly the definition of a mixed-use community.
