  1. Good sleuthing bloggers. You even picked the right development. Now can we find out more about the green features?

  2. Alright!! Show Me The Green-looks like you were the one that started the directions to Plymouth!!! Alright! ^5
Now what do I do with my time since we have no clues??? Keep in touch y’all! Woo-Hoo! Massachusetts-New England!! Way to go HGTV!
Any word on the New Super Fan yet???

Since Sir Humphrey sailed FROM Plymouth, England, and the 99 pilgrims landed (years later) IN Plymouth, MA, could there be a definite Plymouth connection in MARY’s clues?

    3. For me; I’ll be (dreamin’) more for the Green Home— can’t help it– I’m an East Coast Girl

  5. Well, we can keep blogging history lessons, so much of it in that area. But that’s one area I won’t consider moving back to – getting stuck in a snowdrift during the blizzard of ‘78 was enough to make me know that when I left New England, I would only go back to visit. Nice place to grow up, but way too cold for me. I’m looking forward to how to green for cold weather, not just their summer “heat”.

  6. And GlennNYC got the place where the 2011 Green House will be built..Show Me the Green and GlennNYC-HGTV should give you both a trophy for being “The Greatest Detectives on the 2011 Green Home” or at a Lobster Dinner with 99 guests *laughing* ..hint hint..
    They both did GREAT WORK!!

  7. I wonder what CATHY MAINE(IAC) will be doing tonight? Probably having a LOBSTER, LOBSTER BISQUE, CLAMS, CLAM CHOWDER, and Samual Adams Beer CELEBRATION =CELEBRATION=CELEBRATION PARTY, huh?

    1. have to add= CATHY was right, way back when before the New Mexico home was announced , when she read how Linda Woodrum (HGTV) was working on a “project” in Cape Cod!

    2. and GLENN NYC= you must be good at playing darts!! Very Good! So, it’s the PINEHILLS community— looks so nice

    I’m just so excited!!!!!!!!

  8. Yes! Yes! Yes!! :)

Thank you Jack & thank you HGTV for picking the most ideal place yet (other than Sonoma’s 2009 Dream Home)!! I love Plymouth, Massachusetts….and, from what I am seeing, love the design of the home picked for next year’s Gream Home!! :)

This is so patriotic…the Homestead of the Mayflower Pilgrims!! The back Roads of the South Shore is a collaborative project of thirteen leading historic sites in eight towns along the south shore of Massachusetts. What a wonderful group of historic gems and HGTV is going to celebrate the heritage and spirit of the region by building the GH2010 at Plymouth. This is insanely wonderful!! :)

Just the thought of visiting the art galleries right in the heart of downtown Plymouth! Shopping for fine crafts by New England artisans…what could be more inviting? Well, how about a casual Italian dinner with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere….Bertucci’s!! Yes!! Can’t think of a better get away in Plymouth for a meeting place for all the bloggers to enjoy a brick oven pizza together & toast the Gream Home Winner for 2010!! Then stroll around the downtown Plymouth Waterfront to enjoy all the festivities!! :)

Thank you again HGTV for picking America’s Heartland for the GH2010!! It’s totally devine!!! And, Plymouth is so much more than the pilgrim voyage, it is a diverse and unique community. :)

  9. Diana looks like your next vacation (or maybe move??) will be farther up the coast. I agree with you on prefering east coast to west (although that’s just my warmer water desires). Since all GH’s have been on the east coast, think 2011 can be even warmer like one of the US islands? That would be exciting but doubtful.
Who has a favorite recipe for Boston Baked Beans, Boston Cream Pie & for you non-veggies NE clam chowder and clamcakes? Better start getting used to the regional cuisine.

Kat on July 7, 2009 at 9:38 am
  10. KAT= I don’t have a recipe for clam chowder, but in my (Bon Appetit) magazine this month— my Dad pointed out that there’s a recipe for MUSSELS BISQUE.

It’s like (Lobster Bisque,) but replacing mussels instead— it’s less expensive. I’m going out in a little bit— TOMORROW, I’ll scan it and post it. It does look good

  11. Cindy-are you thinking about house 2011? Are you going that far? ;-)
2010 will be in Massachusetts. Looks good. Cape Cod is very nice in summer. I never went there in winter…..
    Kat,
I absolutely agree with you, warmer climate!
I wish for 2011 to be in some warmer climate, near ocean, but in higher level….ah….dreams

I think it is nice location. Cannot wait to see it.

  12. Hi,

Editor Mary here. Just wanted to clarify. Plymouth is only 45 minutes from Boston. Even more reason to celebrate!

Mary on July 7, 2009 at 9:57 am
  13. Thank you Jack and Mary for announcing the location so quickly! It was fun trying to guess what each clue meant, but I am so very happy that you have chosen Massachusetts. This location is truly going to be the best ever! I have never been more excited about a Green/Dream Home yet. I can’t wait to see and hear more about the 2010 Green Home.

  14. GlennNYC….It is Pinehills!!! Great work!!! I love the house, the deck and another awesome community!!!

  15. DEAR MARY= THANKS!!!! YES, REASON TO CELEBRATE!!!!! I mean that, HGTV Never Surprises me—- I JUST LOVE HGTV!!! And the “posting” of your blogs as Senior Editor are do much Fun!!! Some people are into “twittering”– they don’t know what they are missing, LOL LOL

And this is without a doubt—- “Desirable Property”— As they always say, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!!!

The reason why I thought 2 hours— is because I did call the (Mass. Audubon Society yesterday) — kind of did it on a “dare”. That location, she said, was 2 hours from Boston— but I don’t know the map of Mass., obviously.

I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow—have to go out for the day. I’ll say, the person that I spoke to was so Nice. I bet it’s a great community with some great people. I know that it’ll be a nice place to live.

  16. Good morning everyone! How exciting is this! Thanks MARY and JACK for the announcement! Here is the announcement I found online:

HGTV will build its third annual “green” home in The Pinehills, an innovative master-planned community located in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The 2010 HGTV Green Home, just eight miles north of Cape Cod, will be a custom-built, shingle-style cottage with approximately 2,100 square feet of living space. It will feature construction and design elements that are known to contribute to an energy efficient, cleaner and healthier living environment.

“The Pinehills is the perfect community for our third annual HGTV Green Home because it allows us to showcase the latest cost-efficient, accessible and eco-friendly approaches to living that can be incorporated into any home,” said Jim Samples, president of HGTV.

Viewers can enter for a chance to win the HGTV Green Home Giveaway grand prize package during the entry period from April 16 – June 4, 2010.

“This will be our first HGTV Green Home in a New England location, which gives us the chance to demonstrate the best building products and practices uniquely suited for the charm and challenges of a northeast climate,” said Jack Thomasson, HGTV House Planner. “As an added bonus, The Pinehills offers desirable features and amenities such as beautiful wooded lots, walking and nature trails, a swimming pool, three championship-caliber golf courses and the many attractions of The Village Green with its shopping and health/fitness facilities.”

Starting next April, fans can visit HGTV.com for a virtual tour of the home or they can see a televised tour during the HGTV Green Home 2010 special on Sunday, April 18 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

“We’re honored that HGTV has selected The Pinehills as the location of its 2010 HGTV Green Home,” said Tony Green, managing partner, Pinehills LLC. “The Pinehills community is based on a vision that protects the natural environment in a variety of ways – from preserving 70% of the land as open space to providing miles of walking trails to connect neighborhoods to shops and services at The Village Green. The HGTV Green Home will be constructed by MacKenzie Brothers, one of the outstanding custom home builders at The Pinehills.”

Very, very cool!!!!!! I’m outside of Philadelphia so I can definitely meet all of you there! I can be there in about 6 hours!! I know because my son went to college in Boston and it’s a fantastic area!

    Living the Dream!

P.S. Now, MARY, what about that announcement of the SuperFan? I’m waiting for you to call me! ;)

Lynn Coggin on July 7, 2009 at 10:29 am
  17. What a surprise this morning to find the location revealed!—beautiful and historic Plymouth, MA. Time to break out the red shirt, white sneakers and blue shorts, and head off to the great Bay State (I think it’s been 20 years since my last visit to Plymouth…far too long!)

Well, at least now I can stop singing about “bloggers with clues to resolve” and give Coop some rest!

Great job, folks! So much hard work by everyone sorting through all the twists and turns of MARY’s roller coaster ride of clues…but to be fair, it should be noted for the history books that our wise fellow blogger Lynn Coggin mentioned the Pinehills community very early on, in the second clue thread actually, on July 1 at 1:35 pm.

As for Massachusetts, and Plymouth, I guess I can come down from my perch in the crow’s nest of the Mayflower II now, and celebrate the exciting news with a nice hot bowl of lobster bisque! No, wait, I think I feel like something more in the dessert line…I know, Boston Cream Pie, yummm! And what could be more appropriate than a Cape Cod: mix 1 1/2 ounces of Vodka and 4 ounces of Massachusetts cranberry juice with ice, garnish with a wedge of lime, and enjoy.

We have so many more exciting times ahead of us with this great news about Plymouth and the premiere community of Pinehills. Time for more reading about our new Green Home community! Does it get any better than this…of course, other than actually winning the HGTV Green Home, as Kari and Mike Coffey can attest!

Cheers to every blogger and reader alike, we can now consider ourselves ALL HGTV 2010 Green Home Pilgrims….

Show Me The Green on July 7, 2009 at 10:37 am
  18. Wow! The location has been revealed! I must admit that I wasn’t expecting it so soon. Thank you Mary.

Well since, there were no clues to research today….I decided to go back and research the earlier blogs/posts to see if anyone else had mentioned Pinehills – before I took credit… Well after rereading all the posts (you know from back in the dark days of last week when we were all in moderation purgatory) it turns out that there were others who had mentioned Pinehills – with Lynn Coggin being the first! Way to go Lynn – that was true vision and foresight. Also, Show Me spoke about Pinehills several times in his posts. So although, I would like to bask in my brilliance for stumbling across Pinehills yesterday…it seems like others blazed the trail before me.

I think a special mention should go out to Glenna Carlton, who i think was the first one to mention 99 in relation to the Mayflower – which is ultimately what made us all zero in on the Plymouth area.

Anyway – it was a fun and great team effort and I am so enjoying posting with all of you!!

  19. Okay, so I had found the information on my post above online but didn’t realize that the information was right under my nose on this blog if you click above on ‘Read More About HGTV Green Home 2010′…hahaha…I guess I got a little ahead of myself with all of the excitement! My bad! ;)

However, if you go to pinehills dot com, there is a lot of information and the history, vision, and plans of the Pinehills community…very interesting!

    Living the Dream!

P.S. Thanks SHOW ME for the shout out on my guesses!!!!!

P.S.S. LINDA – I have a great idea for a coffee table for the new Green Home (LOL!):
The visible portion of Plymouth Rock is a lumpy fragment of glacial moraine about the size of a coffee table, with the date 1620 cut into its surface. After being broken, dragged about the town of Plymouth by ox teams used to inspire Revolution-aries, and reverently gouged and scraped by 19th-century souvenir hunters, it is now at rest near the head of Plymouth Harbor.

  22. Well, crap! I sat here and studied those clues until after midnight and was re-thinking my choice of Maryland and was waiting for today’s clue, had about decided it would be Plymouth, even read up on how they split the rock and moved part of it and all!..should have entered my guess last night, but got too tired and went to bed…NOW they show where it is located and I am eating myself inside out because I neglected to enter the guess last night!!!! ARGH!!! :( Sure was fun working on this with all you guys…best to you all! At least we got to brush up on our history!! LOL

  23. I was up all night thinking about the location. I knew it was MA with the the clue from the Coast Guard! WOW!!! What a fabulous place!

Born & Raised in NYC and now a transplanted NY er living in FL, New England has the best of all worlds. I personally miss the northern states & I am so excited that the new location has been announced! I can sleep tonight now knowing!

Plymouth Mass., WOW, I don’t believe they could have picked a better location, it is filled with so much beauty, history and a real sense of community.

I have been studying alot about Green homes and have learned alot thru the past years as I have been involved with many local builders who have gone GREEN! I am so excited to learn even more throughout this process.

And of course the culinary attributes of Boston Cream Pie, Lobster Bisque, New England Clam Chowder, makes it even more of an indulgent location!

Love the “HGTV 2010 Green Home Pilgrims” nickname, Very Cute!!!!!!

  24. I am so glad is was New England. I wanted Boston, but Plymouth will definitely do. I have tried to visit all the lighthouses from Key West to Maine. I am only up to Cape Hatteras. Now I have a great green reason for continue my travels.

I can hardly wait for the floor plans and the blogging to continue. I have truly enjoyed this site. HGTV is sooo great.

Since in live in Port Saint Lucie, Fl, I am looking forward to meeting the “New Green” neighbors from Michigan. Congrats to Mike and Kari, again. Lunch is on me @ the Tradition Hurricane Grill.

  25. Hi everyone!

GLENNNYC – Thanks so much for the well wishes! I hope I got an A+ on my Super Fan final exam! ;) Believe me, I’ll be the first to let all of my blogging buddies know! BTW, great job on all of your research! All of us bloggers certainly do make a great team!

GLENNA CALTON – Well, at least you got a good nights rest! Good job on all of your research recently! I’ve enjoyed reading your posts!

DIANA – This location will be very easy for me to get to from where I live, BUT I still want to meet you at the Balloon Festival!

RENEE – Are you at the beach? If so, I’m very jealous but hope you’re having a great time!

SAGG99/SHEILAGG1 – Here is one thing I learned about Plymouth: Plymouth County and its surrounding areas are proud of the many ruby-red cranberry bogs that dot the region. In fact, there are over 458 cranberry growers harvesting more than 12,000 acres across the state of Massachusetts. Close to Plymouth, Edaville USA boasts the Edaville Railroad that traverses mile after mile of lovely cranberry plantation. Edaville also hosts a yearly Cranberry Harvest Festival to celebrate the merits of this notable berry.

Oh, and I thought this was a great fact, the Cranberry World Visitors Center located in Plymouth, Massachusetts, reports Americans eat 400 million pounds of cranberries each year.

Hmmm…well, you can also drink cranberries…here’s a great recipe I’m going to try when I bring my fresh cranberries home from Massachusetts…

    Spiced Cranberry Sangría

    INGREDIENTS
    For the fruit:
    2 cups fresh cranberries
2 Granny Smith apples, large dice
    1 cup Spiced Simple Syrup
    3/4 cup Cointreau
    1/2 cup ruby port wine

    For the sangría:
    1 (750-milliliter) bottle Tempranillo rosé
    1/2 cup ruby port wine
    1/2 cup Cointreau
    1/2 cup cranberry juice

    INSTRUCTIONS
    For the fruit:
Combine all ingredients in a 3-quart container with a tightfitting lid.
Cover and refrigerate at least four hours or preferably overnight.

    For the sangría:
Add all ingredients to the fruit mixture and stir to combine.
Refrigerate until chilled, and serve over ice.

Mmmmmmmm! SHOW ME – maybe this could be the official HGTV 2010 Green Home Pilgrims Cocktail?!?!

    Living the Dream!

P.S. MARIE MILLER – Where are you? I think you may like this recipe!

Lynn Coggin on July 7, 2009 at 12:41 pm
  26. Okay, so how perfect is this…the Managing Partner of Pinehills LLC name is Tony Green…Green is his last name…P-E-R-F-E-C-T! HGTV…did you plan that? ;)

    Living the Dream!

  27. Great fun reading all of the posts. Obviously everyone seems to be very excited about the Plymouth, MA location, AND The Pinehills community, for good reason. No more sleepless nights either; just nights spent dreaming about winning the 2010 GH!

I just wonder where that procession of 99 horseshoe crabs I reported on in an earlier post, spotted and stopped by the Coast Guard in Cohasset Harbor, are now? Probably wandering Plymouth Harbor at this moment, asking directions to The Pinehills for a long and informative chat with Mr. Tony Green, managing partner of Pinehills LLC, and an in-depth interview with the MacKenzie Brothers, the custom home builders chosen for this very special 2,100 square foot Green Home.

I think as a member of the 2010 HGTV GHP’s (Green Home Pilgrims), I can assure them that if all the relevant information from their interviews is disclosed forthwith, they will NOT be used as fish bait (just to clarify, I’m referring to the 99 horseshoe crabs, not Mr. Green or the MacKenzie Brothers!) But then, I suppose we’ll have a Super Fan to fill us in on all those details soon, won’t we?

By the way, MARY, do you think HGTV will plan on marketing the “I’m an original 2010 HGTV Green Home Pilgrim” t-shirt anytime soon?

Show Me The Green on July 7, 2009 at 1:46 pm
  28. LYNN COGGIN= I’m still thinking about it—have to check out rates and an itinary from New Mexico to Vegas. It sounds like a Great Idea— and as far as I’m thinking now, I’M IN—- LET’s ARRANGE something at the BALLOON FESTIVAL—- hopefully some other bloggers could come as well.

MARIE MILLER= Would you want to go? I don’t think that you are too far away.

And— we still haven’t heard anything about a “Party” in Pt. St. Lucie ??????

  30. I Called the Mass. Audubon Society yesterday, and I do feel terribly Guilty! I just hate wasting somebody’s time, (and I felt as if I was making a crank call or something)!— just because I was “nosey” and wondered if she knew where the next Green Home would be.

The Society is in Wellsfleet— which is at the very, very end of Cape Cod ( I just Now looked on a Map). — this is why she said that it was a 2 hour drive from Boston— The office is at the Very, Very, Very end, near Provincetown.

Anyways, she was So Nice, and spoke so Fondly of the Horseshoe Crabs. The workers that work in these type of organizations are really Wonderful People—- they don’t make much money, but their entire profession and lives are just educating people; on how to protect and save animals, and the wildlife. They go “out of their way”, and (always Welcome Volunteers)— and do anything to help save animals (who maybe cannot help themselves).

So—- this is how the conversation went:

ME= “By any chance, do you know if the HGTV Dream Home will be built there”

REP= “ What do you mean? What is H ? What?”

(at this point, I was laughing, and couldn’t stop laughing—-)

(but explained how HGTV just builds a Brand New Home—and then just gives it away)

She then started asking me a few questions about HGTV, etc—- she seemed a little interested. But she just told me to maybe call the “Chamber of Commerce”, and they would know for sure.

So, anyways, it’s like when I called a similar organization in Sanibel about the foxes in my backyard ( I thought that maybe they were hungry) but — they are really Wonderful People. They have to be— if they “make a living” out of solely just helping the little animals.

But— have a Strong Feeling that PLYMOUTH will also be a Great Community with some Great Peope too! And only 45 Minutes from Boston? Does it get any Better than this?

Diana on July 7, 2009 at 3:22 pm
  31. Show Me, I’d forgotten about that drink. Maybe now it’s time to make a new drink, after all how did New York get the Long Island Ice Tea when the Tea Party was in Boston Harbor? Unless it was just to give the greamers a chance to devise the GREEN Tea drink.

Diana, I don’t think the time has to do much with the map, but the TRAFFIC which I remember hearing was brutal between the Cape & Boston, so Mary & your source are probably both right depending on the day/time.

Lynn, when you go to get your cranberries, don’t forget to check the schedule at Edaville Railroad, take the train ride thru the cranberry bogs.
Ok, I looked up regional foods for Mass, saw a few I hadn’t heard of & others that surprised me. Didn’t every child grow up eating fluffernutters & apple cobblers, crisps or crumble? I understand the coffee milk/coffee cabinet being on the list because It wasn’t until the early 90’s when Starbucks first started marketing ice cream that I could find coffee flavored ice cream anywhere but home.

Talking about food, since each home seems to have a few books, do you think Linda will put a Julia Child cookbook in the kitchen? Guess I’ll have to make a stuffed pumpkin for Thanksgiving dinner, but the pork pie is history. Way more food specialties in New England than Florida.

Ed, what are your food memories growing up in Mass?

It will be fun to see how Linda decorates & who the guest designer will be. Wonder when they will start construction to avoid the long cold winters. Hope there is some kind of eco-friendly fireplace, wouldn’t seem like New England without one. Kids have to roast marshmallows & maybe even chestnuts. Oh so many fun memories of growing up there – hayrides, autumn trips to New Hampshire for the foliage show. The winners should enjoy it. Buy warm coats & snowboots. Definitely need more storage there for the winter clothes when out of season & stock the garage with shovels & cat litter for the ice. Brrrrrr, I’ll think of them while I’m enjoying the sunny beach here.

Ok, back to adding a quote to my posts, here’s one from our last Mass. president fitting for greamers:

“The supreme reality of our time is …the vulnerability of our planet.”
    -John F. Kennedy

Kat on July 7, 2009 at 3:33 pm
  32. From an area of the country that has never heard of fluff but I grew up in Rhode Island so this was a staple in our house with peanut butter. Kids love to play with mine and especially happy when I say making fluffernutter sandwiches. Moms here are now jumping on the wagon and starting to make though not happy with all the sugar. Oh Well. It is a great memory for me and love to make this comfort food.

  33. KAT= C’mon, go a little easy on Florida. In Florida, we Have:

    1. Key Lime Pie
    2. ORANGE JUICE
    3. Grouper
    4. Snapper
    5. Shrimp
    6. and after all— Sunshine— but it sure is a hot, sticky — (I’m so thirsty, I’m gonna drink a gallon of Gatorade) summer!!!!

HA HA HA This is Fun!!! I’ll post the recipe for “Mussels Bisque” Tomorrow

Going out now — going out to eat at the restaurant chain, (Red Lobster)— only joking!

  34. Talking about cookbooks, try any of Rachael Ray’s. Seems to have a lot of ‘in your cupboard all ready products’. Other favorites are the church cookbooks which are really tried and trued by normal people and have stood the test of time.

Kat, with me being a California native, it took your comment about the long, cold New England winter to understand why HGTV is moving forward so early with info on the ‘10 Green Home—they HAVE TO, since they’ll be pushing for as much pre-winter construction as possible to button up the house and continue the inside work during the colder months.

After checking into the MacKenzie Brothers website, here’s a brief bit of info on these respected builders: “Gary and Glenn are still deeply involved in the day-to-day on-site operations of all their jobs. Over the past years, MacKenzie Brothers has been the builder of 42 custom homes at the premier golf community of Willowbend on Cape Cod. An example of their craftsmanship and high standards can be seen throughout many buildings and homes at Willowbend.”

“As they move forward, MacKenzie Brothers is also fortunate to be part of one the fastest growing towns in Massachusetts. They have been chosen to join a team of select builders at The Pinehills in Plymouth. Construction is now under way on building custom homes on pine-treed lots in a golf course setting.”

Of course, you can check out their website yourself for much more info, and photos of some of their custom-crafted homes.

    Happy Greaming!

  40. I knew it was MA! That’s awesome! I love in the south, but my mother was raised in Marshfield (just north of Plymouth) and my aunt lives in Ipswich. We used to vacation in Rockport on Cape Ann. BEAUTIFUL AREA for the next Green Home!!!!! I’m excited……but, we have wait until April 2010??? Ugh….

  43. Cindy/Maine, Show Me, Diana, Marie, Lynn, And Glenn/NYC – check my post – July 3 at 7:15 – got the Pine Hills community and state posted – love these Dream, Green, and Blog homes – excited that the Green Home is in the next town – envied all those California, NC, and Fl folks who could stroll by the locations in the few last years – love the whole programming from location, to design, through the blog and over the (Pine) hills – Just as a teaser, in what town was the first town recycling center located? – Oh my, was it in Massachusetts?????????

    steve e on July 7, 2009 at 9:27 pm
  44. :) Thank you. This location has brought tears to my eyes. I have pics of myself as an awkward teen in the stockades in Plymouth taken by Dad. He had quite a sense of humor.

What a beautiful area! I will look forward to seeing this GH built. Maybe I can convince my family to look into it and send extra pictures.

I’m thrilled I won’t have to eat crow. Oh Honeyyyyyyyyyyyy! :)

Trish on July 7, 2009 at 9:38 pm
  45. Lynn Coggin, since you bolted right out of the HGTV location gate July 1 on “Pinehills” and finished strongly in the number ONE position, we hereby award you the blue ribbon for the win.

Does a place or ‘Show’ count for a payout?

By the way, steve e, your fellow bloggers always appreciate local input—an eye on the inside is like having a leg up on the competition—often better and faster even than Google.

The next vital question is, within the huge community of Pinehills, in which development will the 2010 Green Home be built?

The custom home development “districts” are many: Chipping Hills, Five Lanterns, Great Kame, Hearthstone, Island Rock, Pine Cobble, Stones Throw, Ryecroft and Talcott Pines—and there are a number of other named districts; devoted to “Portfolio” homes, condos, 55+, and apartment homes.

Oh, so many choices—but time is now on our side.

    Onward Green Home Pilgrims.

  47. Kat, I think blue berry muffins & blue berry pies were always my favorites. We used to go out in the bogs at a friends house & pick & eat blue berries all day. Then my mom would cook them into fantastic desserts. She was a fantastic cook. I always remembered steamed clams. I still drool thinking about them! My grandmother would take us to Cape Cod in the summer for a few weeks & we would catch blue crabs off of the piers. Then she would cook them up & I would eat so much I got sick. I remembe picking black berries in the woods & getting those turned into desserts too. We used to always have meat pies with our dinner at Thanksgiving. I wish I knew how to make meat pies now. I had Polish, French & Italian aunts & uncles in addition to all my French relatives, so there were always a lot of different ethnic dishes. Good times! I might even move back there if I won the Green Home. Of course I would have to talk my Southern Bell wife into it! :)

    3. Anyways— the STORY is= Robert McNamara was on a Ferry Boat ride to Martha's Vineyard, and an Artist that was on the Same Boat Trip actually attempted and tried to Throw Him Overboard to Murder him.— because of his anger towards the Vietnam War. This happened back in 1972.

  85. As I mentioned before, my neighbors are moving to Sante Fe. I sold their house and they are moving in August. I thought it was interesting that they are selling most of their furniture, especially the wood furniture. They told me that it is not a good idea to move old wood furniture from the Philadelphia area to Sante Fe because the climate is so different and the humidity is so opposite that the wood will get dried out and crack over time. I would have never thought of that.

Anyway, RENEE, I agree about the fireplaces! I know that Kiva or Bee Hive fireplaces have a distinctive arched firebox door and is typical of southwestern design. They are most often placed in a corner and usually made out of the same adobe material used to construct the home.

In addition, I think an outdoor fireplace is a must!!!!! Outdoor living has become very popular and has led to creating comfortable living and cooking areas outside the home. Kiva fireplaces are a popular outdoors addition throughout the southwest. I, personally, would LOVE this idea! Ahhh…sitting out back facing the mountains at sunset with a fire going….PRICELESS!

  92. Lynn Coggin: Loved the recipe but what is "spiced" simple syrup"? Seeing your picture on the newest blog, combined with your enthusiasm, makes me think you would make a super duper Super Fan. Good Luck!!!
I must admit I have never traveled the New England coast. Always wanted to, but never got around to it. How wonderful that the next Green Home will be built in a colder climate. HGTV has met the challenge with such a beautiful location and historic interest. Can't wait to see how this develops with floor plans, etc.
Isn't it funny to see all of us with ghost faces. Will Show Me appear as a knight in shinning "green" armor, or as a beach comber with sunglasses and hat pulled down over his eyes? Will Marie Miller appear as a Southern Belle or the smart, researcher she really is?

  95. Last year they didn’t reveal where the Green Home was going to be located until November. I’m sure glad we didn’t have to wait another 5 months to find out. Imagine, having to wait till turkey day to find out it’s gonna be in Plymouth,Ma.. Of course it would’ve been appropriate.

  96. KATYDID – First of all, I want to thank you so much for the comment you made about me being the Super Duper Super Fan….that was so nice and so sweet…thank you, thank you!

Second of all, okay, so you had me thinking about the spiced simple syrup and I realized that you are right…the recipe for that main ingredient was not there so I went back and found the recipe for the 'spiced simple syrup' for the Spiced Cranberry Sangria that we will all enjoy someday in Plymouth! ;) Here it is:

LynnCoggin on July 9, 2009 at 4:00 am
  97. Spiced Simple Syrup
Total: 10 mins, plus cooling time
    Active: Under 5 mins
    Makes: 2 3/4 cups

Infused with warm spices, this simple syrup adds wintry cheer to anything it tops. Try it on citrus fruits for a winter fruit salad or in this Spiced Cranberry Sangría by Chef Jose Garces.

    INGREDIENTS
    2 cups water
    2 cups granulated sugar
    3 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks
    8 allspice berries
    6 cloves
    3 whole star anise pods

    INSTRUCTIONS
Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan over high heat and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat and let cool until lukewarm. Strain syrup through a fine mesh strainer into a heatproof airtight container and discard spices.
Cover and store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

At first, I thought it was complicated but it really isn't too bad.

  101. Ok, I guess maybe I am getting old since I'm having issues with this new intense debate. Is it only for HGTV did they pre-register us with our names? I clicked on the link to register, but my name was already taken, so I had to add the Eco in front. I'm not the only one with a common name, Ed, DIana, anyone else have that issue?

  106. How did you talk a Southern Belle into Oregon? Oh, the memories of blueberry picking (2 for the mouth 1 for the bucket) behind my grandmother's house in Bellingham. She used them to make pudding – layers of berries & yellow cake batter in a loaf pan, baked then spooned up and served warm with heavy cream poured on top. So yummy.

Kat on July 9, 2009 at 5:53 am
  107. Where in RI? I grew up in North Smithfield. Yes those fluffernutters were high in sugar, probably corn syrup now. Not for my tastebuds now but good memories though. Do you also remember having johnnycakes and stuffed quohaugs?

Kat on July 9, 2009 at 5:56 am
  108. Key Lime Pie yes, fresh citrus yes, I don't eat fish anymore so you can have my shares, if you care to give up your shares of sunshine since it's rain, thunder and lightening again. Why does it seem like winter is the sunny season?

Kat on July 9, 2009 at 6:00 am
  109. I guess there is a little history in FLorida, at least when I was up north in Amelia Island where they have the yearly ShrimpFest and a historical district downtown. But down here in south Florida, not much history and regional foods are the restaurants with food from different countries, not the same as New England.

Kat on July 9, 2009 at 6:04 am
  110. Home is where the heart is. Lots of good memories growing up in RI/Mass but the south has its benefits too. Savannah is a great city, I only dreamed of being in Savannah when I was stationed at Ft Stewart and had to drive 45 minutes on a long boring road under the jurisdiction of 3 law enforcements (so no speeding) to get there to be in civilization again. Guess growing up a Yank makes those small old southern towns difficult to understand, some of them are actually like on Dukes of Hazzard. I never knew people hunted and ate squirrels before, or sat out on their front porch looking at a dirt road with a shotgun in their lap and the nearest grocery store was 45 minutes away. How did they ever get ice cream?

Hmmm, that makes for a 33% success rate. Dismal, but better than nothing at all for the time being!

By the way, where has Marie Miller disappeared to? Are you out there Marie?

Show Me The Green on July 9, 2009 at 6:21 am
  114. Sounds like you're wishing for southern Cal where the water is too cold for me or even Hawaii where I've never been but heard it's beautiful. Don't think I'll get there soon, that quarantine is way too long and I don't even take my "baby" to the groomers so I don't have to leave her someplace strange – so 4 months is out of the question. But what an awesome location that would be. We'd have so much fun blogging about Hawaii.

  115. April?? We have to wait that long for a virtual tour? I sure hope HGTV Pro will have the pix of the buildout posted way before that. We were going crazy waiting for the announcement of when they picked the winner and that was only days, now we're talking not just months but seasons?? HGTV, WE WANT MORE INFO FASTER!!

Kat on July 9, 2009 at 6:35 am
  116. You know you also have to have the NE clam chowder and clamcakes too, and if you're going to have the Boston Cream Pie, you have to have the baked beans.

Since HGTV picked Plymouth it would have been nice if it the home tours could have been around Thanksgiving. Then we could have had a blogger party at Plymouth Plantation for the place of the first feast & then gone on a home tour as a group, special tour for the GH Pilgrims

  118. Ok so our posts have to be shorter now. Guess I won't be able to ramble. Just how short, will we still be able to get in poems, recipes etc? And do we need to keep going back thru all the earlier posts to read the replies? What about this following of people's posts? Are they emailed to us? I was just getting used to blogging & now it's getting complicated. Arrrrrrrrrrrgh.
Where's the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) guide or the new blogging for dummies? Why if I click on someone's name without a picture do I get taken back to another blog topic or another HGTV page?

  119. New name – was steve e – new log in was giving me quirks – went to Pine Hills yesterday – used to ride dirt bikes there 35 yrs ago – have not been interested in planned communities in past – this one may change my mind – was built into land in most cases, as opposed to the track homes of the 80's on the west coast were land was leveled and homes slammed together – houses are large and trendy, section I was in had golf courses rambling through the neighborhood – meticulousy maintained – food market resembled a large interesting barn-type structure with prices similar to the local chain stores – most of the plantings I saw were familiar to the surrouding area – at greeting center (The Summer House) I began to ask about the HGTV Green Home – they were sworn to secrecy and did not seem to believe the location had been made public – I know this area advertises art, family and jazz activites that are open to public – willl be fun to have HGTV in the hood………………..

Danny on July 9, 2009 at 2:34 pm
  123. At first, a message came up that " my name was already registered". I just waited a little while, and then my blogs started appearing. It was a new system, so maybe HGTV had to work through the kinks.

But— I'll try to sign on to "Twitter" this weekend or next— I do see it being a problem with my (name) already taken on Twitter. I'll just add something to it, I guess.

But so far— no problems with this blog. I think that it's Great! It's like "tweeting Live on Twitter"— this is so much fun!

but KAT— keep your name the way it is now. I remember seeing how once you set your (log-in) name, you cannot change it——

I haven't forgotten about the "mussels bisque" recipe. I can't copy and paste it— so, working on re-typing it before posting it. I'm going out later, for the day—- I'll probably "post it" Tomorrow!!! I'll reply to this, or one of your blogs, OK?

  132. We don't have to be "faceless" friends! Try and post a picture of yourself. I'll try to work on this too, this weekend!!!!

I live in Florida, I've been here since I was 9 years old. Of course, I Love it! When I went in the pool yesterday, I was thinking— Northernor's still cannot do this, even in July!

I have mixed feelings about Florida, though, sometimes. Not to say that I'd ever move (Permanently)—- but the mosquitoes and no-see-ums are really getting on my nerves! And sweating in 99 degree heat— it is really a very hot summer. And then those disgusting cockroaches? Saw one on my patio yesterday— Ugggh! And then sometimes I wonder, are the salaries really a lot better up North?

But either way— probably would never move( permanently) . I've been in Florida too long. And you know— you will NEVER Get Grits, Pecan Pie, Baby Back Ribs— and the other southern food up north, you know. But, I guess—- you never know what courses life will take you on—-

Mass. is a Beautiful state though– rest assured— it is a nice place to live, aside from the cold winter's

  141. I can agree with just about everyone else, Plymouth, MA. is a fantastic place to live, I know I lived there before moving to central Florida 22 years ago. I would love to move back there and now that my husband is ready to retired I have been dreaming of making the move. Plymouth will always be home, my son who lives in the midwest say's let me know I will move back with you guy's he is a laid-off airline pilot who still loves Plymouth, but why shouldn't we our ancestors did come over on the Mayflower. You couldn't of picked a better place.

I am getting so addicted to this blog, that i need my day to be 50 hours long, and live 1000 years so I can do what I want to do. Meanwhile I am trying to manage it all: my work, my 8 years old time while in vacation, clean, cook, garden, go to the beach, for groceries, read, blog – and more….. :-)
I get this Newscientist and Discover magazine -they both are great to read easy way to know what is happening , then I fly through internet to read, to know…
    so, I never get bored.

  146. Luba – one more thing. I think you will like this link as well. It is from HGTV's sister Network DIYNetwork.com. It is called Eco-living made easy and has all kinds of information, including videos, on everything from auditing your house for energy leaks to using vinegar for cleaning. When I was there before, they had a link to 100 Green Ideas for your Home (or something like that) – but I couldn't find that particular section today. Here is the link:

    Tami-Lyn on July 9, 2009 at 11:39 pm
  149. Hi Bloggers, this is a two part post for lobster lovers:
Talking about Plymouth and great seafood, here's one tall fish story: come early June, lobsters begin to shed their shells in order to grow new ones. So from July through October, more or less, you can choose between dining on soft shell or hard shell lobster.

So what's the difference? Seems this depends on who you talk to! Some experts will tell you that the amount of meat you get from a soft shell lobster is much less. As a result, they're often used in lobster rolls or other dishes. and they sell for less money per pound than the hard shells. Taste wise, they are pretty much the same, but you can always find an opinion about the merits of one over the other in conversations with serious lobster connoisseurs. I'm sure I couldn't tell the difference, and besides, I want to save my decision making for the choice of wine.

Show Me The Green on July 9, 2009 at 11:58 pm
  150. However, some folks actually prefer the soft shell critters, saying that they're easier to open for one thing, and you're not paying for the extra weight of a hard shell. Either way, just steam, add drawn butter, and I'm happy.

Regardless, hard shell or soft, freshness is very important. Of course, they are usually purchased live from a tank, but even then, you have to know what to look for. Watch them wander the tank for a minute or two, and focus on the more livelier ones. Also look at their antennae—the ones that have been around the block will invariably have their antennae cut or chewed down by their tank mates. And finally, don't be afraid to pick them up to make sure they're not weak or barely hanging on. You want your lobster to be strong, active, and with a bit of an attitude. But if you're going to be boiling them, drop those guys in head first—you don't want them talking back to you!

Show Me The Green on July 10, 2009 at 12:00 am
  151. Interesting fact! I knew all about soft shell crabs – but had never heard about soft shell lobsters. It makes perfect sense though. Well I learned something new today – so thanks for that. I agree with you that at the end of the day – its all about the freshness, drawn butter, and the wine.

GlennNYC on July 10, 2009 at 1:06 am
  152. Well, it is addictive, it feels like you are not alone in home office….and some people are really nice, or are on the same wavelength. I even do not go anymore to CNN site!
This is more exciting! I told myself I will stop blogging, few times. Well I did not. It takes just 2-3 days of waiting, then I go back -curiosity kills the cat….
what is nice here that bad, mean imitations of bloggers are not allowed here. I loved the Napa valley home, I love Napa valey, was there once, loved it. And coming from a wine country I could imagine myself to be there….
but, did not win, so I told myself that I do not really like victorian style. Then I fell in love with greenhome 2009, did not win, but still like it. I think that this spanish-stucco style house is in my veins ;-) – and I am not Spanish at all….maybe in previous life — just joking
Glenn, you need to unwind from everyday-grey activities as work, cooking, chasing butterflies and so on.
    Nice talking to you!

  153. thanks, I am snooping around there right now!

luba on July 10, 2009 at 1:26 am
  154. I hope the designer will make this house with ocean flair = at least in one room: wooden floors painted/stained light color -like white, or blueish wash, with breezy curtains and colors of sea glass and ocean combined with sand and blue sky…..with some accents of sunny colors…..I hope it will be warm and cozy home with all the strength to face winters and hot humid summers….i wish they might put there little green house/room for plants and herbs to grow all year around.
Heated floors at least in bathrooms ( we have one -we dit it on our own, and it is so so pleasant in cold days.). Fireplace is nice, but it is not too eco friendly, burning wood emits bad.
I also loved the open floor plan in Green home 2009.

That may be why I'm subscribed to about 20 green online newsletters (no paper wasted) and have compiled an ever increasing database of green links covering many, many topics from art to children to movies, building materials, recycling, activism and more. I LOVE the internet and how I can learn so much without leaving home, plus make new friends on the gream blog.
I hope your beach weather is better than my thunderstorms here, warm water is nicer when it can be enjoyed.
Also check out the website http://www.filterforgood.com it also has`tips for going green.

  160. I'm going to check that one out once I get done catching up on all the gream blogs. Thanks for letting us know about the site. I love DIY projects. Still trying to figure one out for those horrid disposable razors (can't talk Jack out of them), plus another way to upcycle those burned out incandescent lightbulbs- one can only make so many hanging vases (only idea I found so far).

  161. I wonder if they will still use solar panels in New England with the snow. Although I don't know how the panels on the last 2 GHs will fare in the storms. Just noticed that the house we're moving into here in southern Florida had 2 sets of solar panels, which are now metal frames and shattered glass. Maybe these newer ones are sturdier, hope so for the new owners.

Maybe they will use the solar panels. GlennNYC, your DIY network link has a video on solar panels that are made in Marlboro, MASS so looks like they can source locally for GH2010.

Kat on July 10, 2009 at 2:42 am

  163. Luba I agree with you! That Spanish style GH really got under my skin too. Although, I was born here in the USA (Key West, FL actually), my grand parents are from Spain – so I definitely have it in my veins and love all things Mediterranean. Nice peaking with you too.

GlennNYC on July 10, 2009 at 3:19 am
  164. Great! I went there a week ago and spent hours reading the articles and watching the videos. As I said earlier, when I was on the site last time, there was a link that listed 100 Green Tips – and it was great…but I couldn't find it today for the life of me.
BTW – did you notice the Blog Cabin?? They are going to start the giveaway sweepstakes next month – so we will have something to occupy us while we wait for DH & GH 2010 :)

GlennNYC on July 10, 2009 at 3:22 am
  165. You know, I too have always wondered about what would happen to those solar panels during a hurricane. I am sure Jack and the Leon the builder took every precaution. I think I read somewhere that they did. BTW – congrats on finding a house!!! I remember reading that you were thinking about moving out of your condo – but didn't realize that you had found a place. That must be exciting. You are in S. Florida right? Dade County I think? I grew up there and most of my family still lives there, so I go down often.

GlennNYC on July 10, 2009 at 3:27 am
  166. Couldn't tell you. The few times I go to the mall, it's to a restaurant or the movies. Trying hard to be green & limit the consumerism. Now if only they would show Food Inc at Aventura, but no it's only way out in Sunriise.

Kat on July 10, 2009 at 4:44 am
  167. Just renting for now, but I like the house even though it's older. Appliances look like half are still from the 80's. But with 160 ft on the intercoastal and the beach now in walkiing/biking distance it's a great location. Yes. Dade County (barely, ii's in Golden Beach so Broward is a 5 minute walk on the beach). I love sitting out on the dock, so peaceful by the water. Naturally though I was in the front yard pruning and weeding yesterday when 2 dolphins were swimming by the dock. Guess I'll be in the backyard more hoping to glimpse my slippery neighbors, although I did manage to scare the iguana away in the morning, I was just as startled to see him, but he left before I could introduce myself. He probably won't like me much since I'm going to move those 2 plants he's been killing by eating all the leaves so I can try to save them and move them to the front yard.

  174. Wow! That sounds great. You are so lucky.! There aren't too many people who can say that they have dolphins who swim in their back yard.

As for the iguana – I don't recall them being native to S. Florida when I grew up there. Are they something relatively new – like all the pythons that escaped during hurricane Andrew and/or have been released into the population by pet owners?

  176. THRILLED about a location with four distinct seasons. To make this home as year-round sustainable as the green home in Florida, I hope you're adding a glass green house in the back yard. A green house to grow vegetables and/or fruits year round would so make this the ultimate efficient residence.

  179. Soft shell lobster?! I'm with GlennNYC, I know about soft shell crabs but never heard of soft shell lobsters.

As for picking them up to make sure they're feisty, I'll leave that to someone else. My goodness Show Me. When you research a topic, you research it fully. Good job!

  180. GLENN NYC=

Apparently—- the "Story" is— is that someone brought one or a few of them over from (South America. )This is the "Story" that I heard. I left the Ft.Lauderdale area 10 years ago— so haven't lived over there in a while.

We don't have iguana's over here in Ft.Myers/Tampa. (I'm Glad about that)— But—- that's the story that I was told, and they started Mating—- and now there are in abundance over on the East Coast.

I have a (little) lizard in my garage right now—- can't get the thing–don't want to hurt it. They are so fast, and run so fast, and then hide. < HA HA their tail always gives them away> Hopefully it will find it's way out eventually.

  183. Breaking news (for dessert/sweet lovers): a new store has just opened as of July 1 at 6 Town Wharf on the Plymouth, MA waterfront. And the store sells? Well, in Great Britain they're called fairy cakes, we call them cupcakes in the US, and the new business's name is Cupcake Charlie's.

Mmmm, imagine, a variety of freshly baked cupcakes from which to choose—simple to sinful—and they take special orders. I bet HGTV could get some yummy cupcakes made up with green frosting for the 2010 Green Home ground-breaking celebration.

I think that if I were the winner of the Pinehills Green Home, I'd find myself over at Cupcake Charlie's quite often…but, hey, even if I were just an ordinary tourist in Plymouth, I'd zero right in on those cupcakes, probably once a day at least!

  184. Hello Kat, the most curious and green cat ;-)
our beach was pleasant, about 78 F outside, the water is could, I go only if it is really warm or very hot outside. My 8 years old daughter will stay in water till shivering, and then she will still insists that she is not cold. Weather was nice, but it is supposed rain Saturday …again. I guess this year decided to be wet. It is better than too dry. I remember dry summer, plants and grass were dying, and it was hard to breathe…
If you have some more interesting links, please let me know, I love to explore!

How do you like those tiny electric green lizards? I love them, i think they are so cute. And the flowers – i love oleander, plumeria, agave, palm trees.
That iguana is funny. I have hostas in front of our house, and deer comes to eat it! We live in center of town…. and we saw foxes, owls, hawks, racoons, turtles, ducks, seagulls, family of deers, skunks -unbelievable.

  188. Glenn, I am from central Europe -Czech-Austrian with some very distant French and Italian ancestors…. I used to be fluent in slovak, russian, spanish and french, I speak Czech, English now mostly.
I think this spanish-mediterranean style is very cozy, comforting, and has life, spark, spice too.
I love Mediterranean, especially around Italy, Yugoslavia, southern France. I never went to Spain, I wish … The food out there is so delicious!
When I see this mediterranean style, it almost feels like you can smell the air, the food, the wine, olives, oranges…
I remember being on vacation on Yugoslavian island Hvar, which is covered by lavender all around, and filled with cicadas, the air, the whole island smells like lavender. And cicadas? After few minutes you forget their noise. The water was clear, pleasant, people were nice, the slender cyprusses….this was long time ago….

  197. Thanks for the clarification Diana! The lizard in the garage story reminds me of when I was growing up and my mom would rotate plants between indoors and outdoors – invariably lizards would come in and she would always yell for me to come and catch them so I could release them back into the "wild" :)

  198. Hi Luba – I too vacationed once in Hvar – a town called Starigrad if I recall. It was so beautiful!! And you are correct. The island was overrun by wild lavendar (and rosemary I think and the whole island smelled of it.

That was one of my best vacations. I was there in September and so there were not many tourists (no American's in site). Everyone assumed that I was Italian.

I remember arriving on the island and being greeted by locals who had rooms to rent. I rented a room from some woman for about $10 a day that was private, beautiful, clean and had sweeping views of the hills and Adriatic.

At sunset, I would go jogging along the coast, then for a dip in the Adriatic. On my way back, there was this guy who ran a bar that was right on the water, carved into a rock on cliff. You would walk down and sometimes he would be napping and would wake up and just start prepare drinks as we watch the sunset. Ah, thanks for bringing back such a fond memory!!

I have a background in Advertising and media, but over the past year I've been working with a friend who started a new company that focuses on natural remedies to improve skin and heal scars, psoriasis, etc. It has been a great experience – but stressful trying to launch a new company in this economic environment -as I am sure that you can imagine.

  206. For the local green shoppers among us, check out Plymouth's Farmer's Market, held rain or shine mid-June through October—Thursdays from 2:30 to 6:30 PM at Stephens Field, south of Plymouth Center, and on the Courthouse Green from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM every Saturday.
What else have I learned? Well, that Cape Cod lays claim to the majority of cranberry production in the United States. Cranberries (originally known as craneberries) were introduced to the Pilgrims in the early 1600's, and believe it or not, a recipe for mashed cranberry first appeared in The Pilgrim Cookbook in 1633. which seems to lend credence to the historical accuracy about the early Pilgrims getting "sauced" at Thanksgiving dinner. Read all about it, and much more, at the capecodtravel website.

  208. Now "bear" with me, Pilgrims—it seems San Pedro Overlook isn't the only HGTV location that is making news: just days ago, a Plymouth woman reported seeing a bear Tuesday morning in a wooded area along Route 3, in the latest in a rash of bear sightings in the region, officials said today. Locals say they are coming closer to surrounding neighborhoods looking for food (they've probably heard about the new Cupcake Charlie's store on the Plymouth waterfront. After all, news travels fast in the woods.)

  210. LOL! Okay, I'll try to make up for my last comment with some pertinent information:

Plymouth Rock Studios is a film and television digital studio complex in Plymouth, Massachusetts slated to open in 2010. The state-of-the-art and user-friendly development will include 14 sound stages and a 10-acre back lot, plus production offices, post production facilities, a theater, offices and an amenity village. The project will create over 2,000 high income jobs and provide the infrastructure for sustained growth of the entertainment industry in New England.

The studio will attract film and television productions looking to take advantage of the state’s 25% film tax credit and give talented students and creative professionals the option to remain in or return to the region. Plymouth Rock Studios, the world’s first LEED® certified green studio campus, will be the premier destination for the arts and entertainment community.

How great is that? They are referring to it as Hollywood East!

Unfortunately, my company closed and laid off over 500 people so now it comes to retraining and a different job. The first picture of the area for the new HGTV 2010 home is quite lovely.

katherine varney on July 12, 2009 at 4:43 pm
  215. LynnCoggin, not a bad idea, but I see two problems right away with trying to collect royalties on my signoff line: first, I doubt that HGTV would be willing to pay me royalties when I'm using THEIR acronym, and second, I'm sure that the other half of my signoff line, "Plymouth Rocks", isn't the first time it's ever been thought of…however, I bet it IS the first time both HGTV and Plymouth have been used together that way!

DBCoop on July 12, 2009 at 5:26 pm
  216. I still like the idea of a t-shirt that says "I'm an original 2010 HGTV Pilgrim" on the front, and "Plymouth Rocks" on the back. Okay, I may have to share royalties with HGTV on that one as a commerical venture. Otherwise, I can imagine getting a "surprise van" visit from HGTV, only the van would be filled with Scripps Networks Interactive legal eagles, and they wouldn't be filming for the winner's reveal!
NOT the kind of "surprise" visit I'd be looking forward to….

  230. Hold on to your keyboards, bloggers: I may be a little slow, but I've just discovered that in the "Newest Comments" block at the upper right, if you see a comment that is a "Reply" to a previous comment, rather than an original "stand-alone" comment, and you want to LOOK FOR ITS PLACE in the thread quickly, just click on the posters signin name (such as GlennNYC). That will take you to GlennNYC's ID page, with a history of his comments. Then, click on the highlighted heading FOR THAT PARTICULAR COMMENT/THREAD (such as "We Want Your Input"), which will take you, like magic, right to the place and time that the reply was made.

  240. Lessie, here goes: there are 2 ways to tell whether a comment is an "original" or a "reply" (depending on how you have ID setup to sort comments, by "Date" or by "Last Activity". (Mine is set by "Date", I'll explain why later.) The easiest way I know is to go to the last page of the thread, see if the post in the "Newest Comments" box matches the last post of the thread. If so, it's an "original" comment. If NOT, (assuming ID is tracking properly) it's a "reply". To find the comment it pertains to, click on the poster's signin name, then click on the appropriate highlighted thread, which will take you right to it.

DBCoop on July 13, 2009 at 3:48 am
  242. The same with me – smell of lavender makes me go back in flash. And, do you remember coming back to the shore? Everything smelled so weird! NO lavender scent! Some places/events can really imprint in our memory, right?
    Your presence in GH 2009:
you are so so funny! I love this idea! I would put myself in the lounge -near entrance or in screened porch. I just love this house. I would put apool instead of that sandy stripe. And I guess I would buy more land and plant more trees, and bushes. Only one thing this beauty is missing: office!

Luba on July 13, 2009 at 3:53 am
  243. Glen, you are so kind, such a nice mind of yours. Such a nice person. Thank you so much. Any site you can show me? The company you are in seems to be pretty interesting itself. And I wish you the best too! So nice to talk to you.
Yes we did very interesting, and rewarding projects. My daughter went to Stanford, and it was the greatest place she could go to. She traveled great deal of world.

  246. Pat,
yes,I agree, I wish it would be in every house….it could be attached to the house/garage…. I even would not mind to have a box window ( or so) for herbs, cilantro, and have veggies whole year around. Mainly tomatoes ( my choice). There is nothing better than fresh tomato with salt and extra-virgin olive oil….

luba on July 13, 2009 at 4:28 am
  247. Now, the other way to tell: click on sort by "Last Activity". This will bring up EITHER the most recent "original" comment OR a "reply" (attached to the original comment, regardless of how long ago the comment posted) Then, in "Newest Comments", by comparison, you can see whether the "Last Activity" post brought up was an original comment or a reply to it. However, sorting posts by "Last Activity", since it brings up comments AND replies in the order of posting, means that comments will be out of sequence, since any reply resets their order. I find that too distracting, so I keep things in "Date" order.

DBCoop on July 13, 2009 at 3:46 am
  248. I had a lot of fun researching the clues for the GH 2010. I did a lot of reasearch on the mayflower, which reminded me that I am a direct descendant of william Bradford (our geneoloy lines are researched quite aways back). I had never read his journals before or studied up on the first years of the pilgrims, and it was great to see how much faith and courage and resilience they showed in such great trials, and how willing they were to share with those who were around them, even though that meant that they would go hungry themselves. Most of the indians in the area at the time were as willing to share or trade. The idea of Green Homes and living more in harmony with nature and being more ecologically friendly is something that the pioneers exemplified out of neccessity. If we are ever to be in a situation, that these pioneers were in and many others who have had to leave their homes in search of a better life, what greater example would we have than to read of things that pioneers throughout the world have had to do in order to survive.

    Cami5k on July 13, 2009 at 12:59 pm
  249. The HGTV Green Home is a step in the right direction, although not extreme, since we cannot expect to throw ourselves into the roles of pioneers, when we have been pampered and so well taken care of, for so long. When considering a greener way of life we are making small improvements to be more self sufficient as these pioneers had to be. I applaud the HGTV Green Home Dream Team for choosing this location and I hope that during the process we do learn more of the struggles of the pioneers and even perhaps, how very possible it is that we may be in the same situation someday, if we do not act now to conserve energy and take better care of our environment, and become more self sufficient.

Ok I am stepping down from the rock now.

    Cami5k on July 13, 2009 at 1:00 pm
  250. Coop,

Thanks for the explanations. I think I'll sort by date too instead of last activity. You're a good student because you've studied ID and know how it works. Needless to say, you've run circles aroud me. You and Marie Miller love challenges and have a competitive spirit. There's nothing you can't do if you desire to do it. That's why you'll always be young at heart!

As for me and my knowledge of ID, well I'll learn it sooner or later. Focusing on other projects I'm working on.

Lessie on July 13, 2009 at 3:31 pm
  251. What a great heritage Cami5k! Did you ever think the search for the 2010 HGTV Green Home would take you back to your roots?

Lessie on July 13, 2009 at 3:34 pm
  252. Thanks, DB COOP—- I agree— I've found that sorting by "Date" is a lot easier!

KAT= where are you? I'm ready to post that recipe— I've checked it over 2 times to make sure that I typed the measurements correctly— I'll check back in later— but going out for the day.

Diana on July 13, 2009 at 3:36 pm
  253. Cami5k,

Since you're passionate about this subject, have you thought about writing an article comparing our present economic situation to the pilgrims? They never lost hope and neither should we.

A better life may require getting rid of some of the things we take for granted in order to make real change. Change that positively affects the lives of those who come after us.

Lessie on July 13, 2009 at 3:42 pm
  254. Lynn, you are so helpful to fellow bloggers. Thanks for taking time to help us out.

Lessie on July 13, 2009 at 3:44 pm
  255. Lessie, I'd say that focusing on other projects as opposed to examining every facet of the ID format is a very good use of your time!

Unless pressed to do so, I think I know as much about the new format as I need to know. Being able to post, and follow along in the blogs relatively stress free is my goal, and I think I'm just about there.

  257. Speaking of Marie Miller, is she on hiatus again this morning? Are you out there doing some research for a Green Home posting, Marie?

Not to mention GlennNYC, Katydid, EdinOregon. Pilgrims, where are you all? Tending livestock, toiling in the fields, sneaking cupcakes at the local bakery? Hope we don't have anyone locked up in the stocks on the town square for weekend indiscretions!

Lynn Coggin, hope your day is going smoothly. Are you busy scouting sites for new CBS videos?

  259. Good morning DBCoop! Morning/afternoon to all other fellow bloggers. Oh no, I am trying to forget about the cupcakes! Last night, my sweet tooth was large and in charge – to quell it – I had to restrain myself for venturing out. 273. GlennNYC, not sure if this was the cause (possibly resolved by Chad at this point anyway), but my "Cupcake Conundrum" comment became "stuck" only after I noticed a typo and went back to edit it. That brought it up to the "Newest Comments" box, where it sat like guests overstaying their welcome at a dinner party!

  274. Good to hear from you, EdinOregon. Posting is good, reading along is fine; at least we know you're out there in the Oregon sunshine supporting the HGTV troops.

Speaking of, do you think MARY will be making a strategic move in the very near future? Perhaps by changing tactics and posting a new thread with those long sought-after houseplans? Just think of the morale boost….

  275. Diana, don't know if this would be an issue for you, however, I've found that if I access the internet through AOL and go into the blogs using AOL, I cannot sign-in using my ID account. 276. Hi Diana, I'll give it a try –

When you scroll to the bottom of this post do you see an area that says: "Post as a guest" or "Log in – Sign Up" ? If so, click on the word "Log in" and then it will ask you to enter your user name or email address (for example I would enter GlennNYC in that box) and then you'll need to enter your password (the one you used when setting up the Intense Debate account) and that should do the trick.

You will know that you are logged in because when you are posting a new comment you will see "Posting as Diana" (or whatever your ID username is) right below the comment box where you enter your text.

Right now, i can tell you are only posting as a guest because I am not able to click on your "avatar picture" or name. If you were signed in it would allow me to.

    Good luck

  277. Busy moving into new house, no internet there except on my iPhone & it doesn't like the new format, when I have a few minutes to look at posts I can only see normal posts, no replies & really haven't had time to look much, moving is so much work. I do check my email though so replies to my posts I get that way & then answer directly to that person.

  278. Hi all,
sorry I haven't been on lately, I have been very busy moving and spending most of my time at the new house where the internet won't get connected until Friday or maybe even the following Tuesday. I'm not5 ignoring anyone & I'll try to read the blog on my phone when I can, but I can't post or read replies, only the old formats. I can't wait to have some down time to catch up on all I've missed the past few days & maybe we'll have a new topic also. Until then, have a great week.

You're bad, bad, bad. Cupcakes and chocolate. Dianadiva, double dark fudge chocolate….. That's so wrong. Why tortue a chocolate lover, especially with cupcakes? Where's the blogger unity? What about blogger love? Now I need some chocolate to relieve the stress……..

"…guests overstaying their welcome at a dinner party." That's a good one. You're too kind.To solve that problem I'd serve the final course outside. Then I'd sneak back inside, turn out the lights and go to bed. Yeah, I know thats bad. See what happens when I need a chocolate fix.

  290. Thank you, he is one of best bloggers here. I really like to read his blogs.
I met today on beach another artist – she paints these beautiful landscapes, breath-taking ones. I met on this beach a lot of artists from many countries – being one myself. I think that this beach is magnetic to art personalities and should be renamed to "Artists beach". Life can be so interesting if you look behind the visible – see the sparkling light in droplet of water, see the beauty around in little overlooked things, nature, just the clouds on sky….the smell of flowers, sun – yes sunshine has this scent which is subtle, dreamy. The sound of waves, the sound of kids playing…
these make us rich in soul, mind.

But I would not mind at all to get job there. I used to work in Movies -animated movies, then for TV, for production companies. It is attractive, but crazy field…one has to have personality for it. In TV the speed of work is very fast. Adrenaline booster, you get so high energized. Some people can burn in 2 years, and need break. Movies are different – different world. Animated movies are more calm, it is so rewarding to give life to the characters – and then to see children to love it, enjoy it..

  291. Lessie, I think we all got hooked on chocolate and these earthy necesities : food, sweets – ah I love chocolates, especially the Lindt with nuts, or oranges filling, or brandy filling….Ok, it is midnight, no caffeine for me! In NYC is a store with Belgium chocolates which are from heaven. SO So good!

luba on July 14, 2009 at 4:01 am
  292. Wow – DBCoop – I think you are correct. I've been away from the blogs for several hours and now I am trying to track all the previous threads…and I'm getting all twisted around. I think I am going to have to hire an assistant just to track all the threads… or I will need to eat more and more chocolate – Oops sorry Lessie!!! I did it again.

Thank for the link LynnCoggin…I will have to explore! Speaking of chocolate – Has any one tried Vogues Chocolate? I found them at Whole Foods here in NYC and they are out of this world. All organic /Green and some very interesting flavors. I tried the Habana bar – which was chocolate with plantain chips (i love that whole salty – sweet thing). Anyway, for the really decadent – they even have a chocolate bacon bar – I did not try that. It sounds gross – but who knows could be good if you like applewood smoked bacon + choc. Here's a link: <a href=”http://www.vosgeschocolate.com/green” target=”_blank”>http://www.vosgeschocolate.com/green (Luba – their website needs some help..maybe you should approach them.)

Luba – your "drool like a dog" comment made me laugh so hard. I loved it.

Kat – hope all is going well with the move – don't give any of your extra produce to your new Iguana house mate! (I read somewhere that if you feed them, you will be overrun with a whole colony of Iguana's before you know it.).

Okay – I must sign off for now. Good night and "sweet" dreams.

Chocolate bacon bar?! Sounds like an oxymoron but if I can stand it, I may even try that too. Now that's what I call sweet and salty.

Well anyway Lessie, I'm glad you got the last two responses. The Marriot Marquis is very centrally located – so you could definitely walk if you like long city walks and the weather is nice (so far, the temps here in the city this summer have been very mild – but in August it's a crap shoot).

Lessie on July 14, 2009 at 5:45 pm
  311. Yes that would be fun – like the three musketeers. Luba can take us to the Belgium chocolate place she mentioned. We can write a up a review on best Chocolates in NYC – and to be fair – we will have to sample them all – or to make it a bit more manageable the best chocolate in a certain NYC neighborhood.

GlennNYC on July 14, 2009 at 5:52 pm
  312. Glenn,
you tapped on my most secret thing – chocolate… and Habana.
I lived in Havana one year with my parents, my father worked in Havana back in late sixties. I love Cuba -it is so beautiful, Havana has this old timer charm mixed with modern ( at that time). People were nice to us, they were happy for any second they could dance, laugh( they danced in car – yes, while driving car with cloth instead of doors, they danced on red light, anywhere, anytime – they would dance for few minutes, but it was making them happy). For me as a very young girl it was so exotic, so charming, so different, such experience, and memories – and suitcase filled with sketches, i drew everything, from moving car, sitting on beach, being in city….
I hope one day we all will be able to travel there. It is really nice there.

Where do you get Vosgues chocolates? Can you let us know, pleeease? Pretty please? – oh, I just read the rest of your blog, so I can get the info on their purple site ( you are right they need a facelift… ;-)
You know, you are really great person!

I agree chocolate and bacon…hmm…I do not like sweet meats, ham. I get this rosemary ham, it is very good. Once I sauteed chicken with orange/lemon squeezed over + some salt, it was not sweet, it was actually good.

And I do get lost in this blog settings. I think it is really hard to keep track. I get email notifications, but when you click on : go to comment, it does not go that particular comment… frustrating

I have to go, my sister-in-law fiancee got killed in motorcycle accident this Saturday, very tragic, I feel so sorry for her.

  317. Sorry about that Lessie! Try this link:

    <a href=”http://www.vosgeschocolate.com” target=”_blank”>http://www.vosgeschocolate.com

There are several Whole Foods in and around NYC. The one where I found it was in Chelsea, located on 7th Avenue and 24th Street.

There is also a Vouges Boutique located in SOHO at 132 Spring Street (between Greene & Wooster).

Also while you are here, you need to try a Magnolia Cup Cake – they are credited for rekindling America's love affair with cupcakes back in the mid 90s. Unfortunately, nowadays – there is often a long line (which serves as a good deterrent for me!), but sometimes you can hit it just right and not have to wait (which was the case last Sat. evening when I was uncontrollably pulled in). Here's their website:

    <a href=”http://www.magnoliacupcakes.com” target=”_blank”>http://www.magnoliacupcakes.com

While you are in the Village – you may want to belly up to the "Chocolate Bar" – "A candy store for Grown Ups" Of particular interest is their "Chocolate Addicts Club," sorta like the fruit of the month club. Try the ever popular "Shake your Bon Bon" membership – link:

    <a href=”http://www.chocolatebarnyc.com” target=”_blank”>http://www.chocolatebarnyc.com

Okay – there are more, but I'll stop here. Hopefully the links will work.

    Take care of those trembles!

  318. I have just two things to say: no more wire hangers, and STOP all this talk about chocolate! Sheesh, we're supposed to be planning for a party at the Dream Home, and you're leading us down the garden path, following chocolate cupcake crumbs no less.

Now, back to the important task at hand; we need to focus all of our efforts on party themes. And speaking of poolside parties, rather than choosing just one, how about all three: Turquoise Trails with Tequila Sunsets; Margaritas at Midnight; and Simply Sangria and Samba.

Add tortilla chips and salsa, poolside dining and postre (dessert), bring in some muy simpatico mariachis, and you've got mucho magical memories in the making.

Salud a todos mis amigos…and I'm moving this post to the Dream Home blog—where it belongs!

Glenn, today, after wake for my sister-in-law fiancee who got killed after motorcycle accident -2 weeks after he proposed to her….well, after this sad sad event, after I came back home, and settled down, and sorted my mind, i realized that in South America natives cooked with pure raw chocolate, they cooked meat, and other non sweet foods. Also, if you saw the movie "Chocolat" there was a lot of chocolate variety….it was great movie.

  325. Hey, Coop, maybe this is bloggers surviving method – to sway the hopes and thoughts for the dreams which might not come true- to something which is accessible = chocolate! ;-)
I read somewhere that chocolate goes to the same receptor in brain where cocaine goes =this why people love it. But it does not have that nasty addiction of the bad drug. I am not sure if the source was right. :-/
But it is true chocolate makes you feel good!
And chile jelly, and tortillas, and margaritas, and tango, and salsa dancing…

  328. Luba, how sad when death comes so suddenly…and so unfairly it seems. In our minds, we know on one level that life and death are intertwined, but in our hearts, losing loved ones is always painful, and difficult to bear, even at those times when circumstances tell us that we must prepare for it.

We can give little comfort, other than to offer the weak promise that time will lessen the sadness, and our memories will become, though bittersweet, of some consolation to our wounded heart as the days pass by us. We wish that for you, and look forward to sharing the more mundane parts of each day through these blog pages.

    To another day of friendship.

DBCoop on July 15, 2009 at 6:19 am
  329. Not to diminish my previous sentiment in any way, Luba, but to share a thought on an earlier comment—the movie 'Chocolat' was well-done, I thought, and original. Another movie, made earlier (1992), is a foreign film; 'Como Agua Para Chocolate' or titled in English, 'Like Water for Chocolate'. If you have seen it, it is very moving and exceptionally well done, but not one for someone who has recently lost a loved one. If you haven't seen it, think of doing so when your heart is lightened.

  330. Yes, she is heartbroken, This would be her second marriage….
it will take long time. When my dad died, I was so hurt. He was the best dad anyone can have…very smart, intelligent, brilliant -on genius level, funny, fair. I could talk to him about anything in the world and universe. Everybody just loved him. He left 1995, and I still miss him. But life goes on, he has special place in my heart, so do my kids, and good people around.
Thank you for your nice words. Sometimes solitude heals.
When loved ones leave us, we suffer, but we have to go on, make the best of life, of us.

  333. Heading up the Massachusetts coast from Plymouth, just north of Boston, is the scenic town of Salem. Salem is known of course as the center of the Puritan's religious hysteria and witchcraft trials that gripped the settlement in the late 1600's.

The last persons hanged for witchcraft in the American colonies was on September 22, 1692.

Fortunately, Salem is also noted as the somewhat less somber setting for the historical novel "The House of the Seven Gables", written in 1851 by Nathaniel Hawthorne. When Hawthorne wrote his novel, the house on which he based it actually had only three gables, due to renovations. Who knew?

  339. Well, Pilgrims, going to be in the Boston area in early August? Check out the Scituate Chamber of Commerce Heritage Days 2009: August 7th, 8th, & 9th.

"Each year the Scituate Chamber of Commerce proudly presents Scituate Heritage Days. The annual event combines live music and entertainment, artisan crafts, kid’s activities and historical site visits for one of the South Shore’s biggest and most anticipated outdoor events of the summer."

Then swing down to Plymouth, take a drive through the scenic Pinehills communities, and give us a full report on any 2010 Green Home activity!

I like to read your writings. You use the language so well. Are you a writer? Can I ask – what is what you do?

I saw "Como Agua Para Chocolate" also. Great movies!

I deal with sadness this way, I get into solitude for few days,I mourn, cry, am very sad for few days, then it is time to get up and go on. My father's motto was : " hope dies the last" and I have this thirst for life, to create, to love that I get my strength again. I believe that the soul, the substance of us never dies, just changes the shapes and time and place – whatever it is.
I keep them in my heart forever, they live in memories, only that we cannot touch them, we can think about them, we can "talk" in our mind…and then there is a lot of we do not know yet.

luba on July 16, 2009 at 3:55 am

  350. Dianadiva, what a time to be in Salem, on Halloween–how awesome!

That reminds me of a Halloween I spent in Central City, Colorado in 1990, just before gambling came in and completely changed this sleepy, virtual ghost town into an action-packed gambler's paradise.
During my visit, the hotel I stayed in was empty, except for me! Even the hotel staff/front desk folks left in the late evening. I walked the deserted streets, taking in the history, the architecture, the boom and bust reminders of this once prosperous gold/silver mining town. On returning to the hotel through darkened streets, I spent a very quiet hour, (in pyjamas, bathrobe and slippers) sitting alone among the old-West and Victorian era furnishings, reading in the hotel lounge. I'll always remember that Halloween!

How would they know in those days of course. They just attributed it to forces of evil, and eliminated the poor folks!

She sold the Sonoma home for 2.2 million because she wanted to be near her family in Florida. What a great win-win opportunity for her!

If you win the 2010 SPO Dream Home, sell it! You'd have more than enough to buy or build your personal dream home close to family and friends. Now that's a win-win opportunity!!!

  362. Lessie, don't know that I'd have the necessary discipline to be a writer. It is simply the way my mind processes information and directs me to put it down. Yes, I do find linking words together to express my thoughts a creative and fun adventure —sometimes with ease, other times with more difficulty—as for an artist or musician I suppose. However, it has never been a part of my life in a career sense, not when it comes to the world of finance. Of course, we see where creativity can lead us in that regard!

Maybe if I win the Green Home in Plymouth, I'll be moved to write something as thoughtful, well-written, and inspiring as Nathaniel Hawthorne's romantic 'The House of the Seven Gables'. Or, winning the Dream Home in San Pedro Overlook, I might immerse myself in writing a best-selling Western novel such as did Zane Grey, with his 'Riders of the Purple Sage'.

In the meantime, this time next week, I'll be ready to saddle up and ride into the sunset over the Pacific towards Thailand, where the limits of my design creativity will be tested putting the condo together for future visits.

Of course, I also checked under the bed, in the closet, and looked behind the shower curtain to make sure I didn't have any unexpected visitors! Well, not really, but it was kind of other-worldly, feeling like I was the only living soul in this nearly deserted old-West ghost town—on Halloween night!

BTW, do you think a psychic (or one of the Salem witches) could tell whether you were going to be the winner of the 2010 Green Home?Just think how easy that would make the transition if you could start planning all of the details now….

If only the Salem witches could talk, and I knew the future would include a t-shirt with the logo that says 'I'm the 2010 Pinehills Pilgrim' and 'Plymouth Rocks' !!!

  375. Hi Luba – I just found this. Trying to find people's responses is sort of like unraveling Mary's location clues. On the upside, it does keep us busy, I guess.

I too have been having some problems with Safari. There is a new update that you should download if you haven't already. That might help.

GlennNYC on July 17, 2009 at 3:33 pm
  376. ME!!!! Have you ever been to Massachusetts? It really is a beautiful state. The changes in the fall foliage is something quite beautiful to see—- it really is like looking at a "live" painted still picture!

(I went to Boston many years ago for a weekend—it actually was a college trip with a history class. ) You are also very close to the beautiful state of New Hampshire.

The only thing Not to Love about it— is the weather. I live in Florida— and I think that Florida is really the Only Warm state in the Country. Other than Florida, you will have cold winters with snow. Even in New Mexico and Las Vegas! Cape Cod is as everyone knows— a vacation resort area, too.

But, what are your feelings about Massachusetts?

dianadiva on July 17, 2009 at 3:34 pm
  377. Cyn-VaBch, I'd take a home in Mass, even if it means selling it to someone who wants to live there. In my mind, an HGTV home located anywhere is a valuable real estate.

Lessie on July 17, 2009 at 3:44 pm
  378. Dianadiva, you think Florida is a WARM state? What do you consider HOT? I like Florida but it's hot there. The beautiful ocean views make the heat tolerable.

  379. Coop, love your response to Dianadiva. I wouldn't want that experience either, but you handled it well.

Salem witches, psychics–you're over my head. I'm quite sure the winner of the 2010 Green Home will be just as thrilled with a call from HGTV telling them the good news!

    I love reading these blogs!

  380. LESSIE= Yes, it is as Hot as Hell here! This is my summer:

    1. Dripping in Wet Sweat
    2. Being Dehydrated
    3. Taking a shower—- and then needing another one
    4. Even last night— after 9:00 PM—- I was on my patio—- still sweating!
    5. The other day— during the day— there was a cockroach on the paito door—- it almost flew in the house—- GROSSS– I don't know how it got on the patio—- the grounds here must be swarming with them

Don't get me wrong—- I do Love Florida, still—- the Sunny Beaches, etc…. and you can't beat the weather in the winter time—but sometimes, would love a change. I'd love to be somewhere right now where the (high) for the day is 67 degrees——

I've got my Dad almost convinced that we should move to Boston—- LOL LOL, really!

But he said—- the plan would be—- Live in Boston, but live in a "second home" in Florida—- for December, January, February, and March

With the way home prices are dirt cheap now—- this idea isn't for the rich and famous anymore—- LOL LOL

dianadiva on July 17, 2009 at 4:00 pm
  381. DB COOP= You are so funny!!! All I keep thinking about was when he was "calling out—- Mother", remember, in Psycho??? But putting that aside—- I don't know if I'd "sleep in a ghost town". I KNOW that I WOULDN'T !!!! I don't want to "make friends" with "ghosts"

. I even saw a story once— that the Flamingo Hotel( Bugsby) and Wynn Hotel ( Howard Hughes) in Vegas has seen (ghost sightings)— but at least they are well-populated— LOL

One time— a psychic did tell me that I'D BE LIVING IN A BEAUTIFUL HOME IN THE PACIFIC NORTH WEST. I told her that she was crazy—- and that I'd Never move that far away. She was totally adament about it—seeing Washington State– and said— YOU ARE GOING TO LIVE IN A VERY ELABORATE HOME IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST.– LOL LOL

That was about 5-7 years ago. Hadn't been to one since. I'm a Christian, and I really do hate going to them— I just don't want to invite any "unwanted spirits"— if you know what I mean.

  383. Diana,
I am not sure how long you are in Florida, I was one year in tropics, it took 3 months to get used to the heat ( i was sweating just by blinking eye -we did not have AC, not even a fan…imagine!!!) but then – in winter, when it was about 75, we were cold!!! I had to wear sweater. Love tropical evenings and nights….

  391. LUBA= They look delicious! Are they in the Boston area?

I'm having a hard time adjusting to the heat this summer— and I think that you hit the nail on the head. For the past 5 years- I've been mostly in Tampa. Eventhough Tampa is only a 2 hour drive North–the weather is slightly different.

For example— in January, lets say, it could get as cold as 30 degrees in the morning in Tampa. In Ft. Myers— the coldest it got, I think, was in the high 40's. So maybe that has something to do with it, I don't know. Tampa is also windy.

But— it is a hot summer. Usually, we see the 90's in August and definitely September—- It came a lot earlier this year'

  392. Luba, your comments are true! Had to make an emergency trip home during February one year. When I left, there was about eight inches of snow on the ground and temps were in the teens. I had on a wool or leather pant outfit. When I arrived in Houston, I thought I was going to die! Went straight to the store, selected an outfit and changed in the dressing room before heading to the cash register. It was hot, hot, hot! Must have been about 70+ degrees.

It's amazing how we become acclimated to our environment and see everything else as different.

I am looking forward to see floorplans of both homes! I used to work for very good architect – doing renderings etc, and floor plans call tell us so much. Important is the flow inside, how easy we can do and move around. Where is the cozy "hiding" space where we can be alone for a while…

  403. When in Massachusetts, do as the Pilgrims would have done (if they'd had the chance), try some of the locally produced cranberry and fruit wines at the Plymouth Bay Winery, which overlooks scenic Plymouth Harbor.

According to their website: "As visitors to the area, you will find the Plymouth Bay Winery a pleasant and unique experience. We are located in the heart of Plymouth's historic waterfront district. We are a cork throw away from the Mayflower, Plymouth Rock, and of course, the glorious bay and all its associated amenities."

And I won't mention that other business again we've blogged about recently that offers the tastiest, freshly baked cupcakes….

Cranberry wine and chocolate cupcakes, anyone?

  409. Well, GlennNYC "Unplugged", once you return to the working world again and choose to plug back in, perhaps you'll consider popping into the Dream Home blog now and then.

It had been very quiet there recently, but with the long-awaited revelation of the floorplans, it's been revived, and is now sizzling with a flurry of excited comments.

  410. Hi everyone…all of my blogging buddies! With all of the activity over at the Dream Home blog with the new reveal of the floor plans, I didn't want to forget to post this little bit of info about Plymouth that I found a couple of days ago.

In Plymouth, you will find the smallest state park in Massachusetts – but it is also the park that draws the most visitors. It is Pilgrim Memorial State Park.

The main attraction? A controversial rock. Was it or was it not where Pilgrims in 1620, having fled religious oppression in England, first set foot to settle in the New World?

But there is no debate that there is a lot more to Plymouth than a 10-ton boulder. Once a thriving fishing and shipbuilding port – and home of the now-defunct Plymouth Cordage Company, the world's largest rope maker – tourism is now the town's economic engine.

And the town offers an amazing number of cultural, recreational and dining experiences in its 100 square miles – the largest land area of any town in Massachusetts.

100 square miles of fabulous experiences, doesn't that sound great?

  412. Hi Lessie! Hmmm…I don't know if HGTV did that this year because it was their first Super Fan experience or if the job does include one year of both the DH and GH. However, hopefully, I'll be the one to find out when they call me and you'll be the first to know! ;)

  413. As I'm thinking of my flight across the Pacific, the following tidbit of info about Plymouth seems appropriate: "Designed by the award winning team of Hurdzan/Fry, Crosswinds is the newest Championship daily fee course in Plymouth."

For the golfers among us, check out Crosswinds Golf Club.

Just another suggestion on how to get clubbed in Plymouth…the right way!

DBCoop on July 23, 2009 at 6:06 am
  414. Lynn Coggin, thanks for the stats on Plymouth, which, as posted, covers 100 square miles.

The Island of Phuket, by the way, covers 570 square kilometers, or 220 square miles. This one large island is surrounded by 39 much smaller islands, giving beachgoers, sailors, divers, and visiting tourists plenty of water-related activities from which to choose.

DBCoop on July 23, 2009 at 6:17 am
  415. COOP – Sounds heavenly! A little boat trip over to Ko Bon for a bit of snorkeling would be ideal for me!

Have you ever done this? Viewing the sunset – watching the great red orb of the fading sun being swallowed by a tranquil Andaman Sea – is one of the must do things for every Thai visitor to this island. It is de rigeur to do this on even on the shortest visit. Local tradition proscribes that every Thai visitor to Phuket must make the pilgrimage to Laem Phrom Thep, one of the country’s most famous landmarks at the very southern tip of the island, before he can claim to have seen Phuket.

  416. Lynn Coggin, I have indeed done the snorkeling, around the Phi Phi Islands, and a small rafting expedition around the Phang Nga Islands (where the so-called James Bond Island is located)—it's all spectacular, and I've barely scratched the sand and surrounding waters of Phuket.

I agree, this is well worth a trip to Thailand just to experience the sun, sand, snorkeling and sunsets on offer there, but a word to the wise—
during my Phi Phi Island snorkeling visit, the weather was a bit stormy, the currents strong, and I was snorkeling without a life-jacket off of a boat in deeper waters. The short version of the story is that the current quickly took me far away from the boat, and in the choppy water, I was soon in trouble. By the time I was spotted and picked up by a crew member, I was going down for the last time, thinking to myself, this is not the end I expected! I was rushed to the hospital and spent the night with an IV drip recovering from the ordeal.

DBCoop on July 23, 2009 at 5:51 pm
  417. The moral of that sad story, which ended well (after all, I'm still here), is that even paradise has its perils, so keep your wits about you and don't take unnecessary chances, especially during inclement weather.

During the summer months, Thailand's tropical rainy season, currents are strong around the islands AND at the beaches. Despite the red flags posted at popular tourist beaches, they are ignored, and drownings occur all too often. Enjoy the beauty, but don't throw caution to the wind. Thankfully, I lived to share my lesson learned.

It's almost like blogging; you never know where the currents are going to take you, but hopefully, it's mostly smooth sailing. And if the going does gets rough, fellow bloggers are there to help you out!

  418. OMGosh! Great story! I was on the edge of my seat reading your last two comments…Lucky for all of us bloggers that your time wasn't up! I love a good story with a happy ending!

I know that I have always told my kids that if they get caught in a rip tide, to swim parallel to the beach and NOT toward the beach. I think the hardest thing to do is NOT to panic and maintain your awareness of the current.

Now, as you may know or may not know, I have five children. So, needless to say, I am always telling them things about safety whether they want to hear them or not because I would rather be safe than sorry. Some they have heard over and over again throughout the years.

Unfortunately, now that you shared your story and you are leaving tomorrow to go to Phuket, I have to say a few things to you (it's the mom in me…I can't help it!)…

    Living the Dream!

LynnCoggin on July 23, 2009 at 7:32 pm
  419. (continued)

The sea surrounding Phuket is part of the island's natural splendour and the main reason that many people choose to spend their holidays here. The clear warm waters are enticing, and are pretty safe for most of the year. The sea does contain dangerous creatures, such as sea snakes, lionfish, stonefish and jellyfish. However, it's only really jellyfish that could concern swimmers, and these are not much of a problem on Thailand's Andaman coast.

You should exercise a lot of caution while swimming off the west coast of Phuket during the rainy season (May – October) due to rough seas. Waves can be quite high, 4 feet or more, with strong rip currents. Several tourists drown during the rainy season each year and many more have to be rescued. Bear in mind there are no lifeguards on Phuket's beaches except Kata and Karon. Do not swim in the sea if there are red warning flags on the beach.

  420. (continued)

Now, COOP, there is no doubt in my mind that you do not need in any way to hear these safety points from me, however if I post them, I personally will feel better…so here it goes! LOL!

#1 – Never go swimming when drunk. The most common cause of drowning is alcohol intoxication. (Ummm…love that one!)

#2 – If you are stung by a jellyfish, treat the area with ammonia or vinegar and seek medical attention.

#3 – There are many poisonous reef creatures, all of which are not aggressive. Look but don't touch and you should be fine.

#4 – If you are cut by coral, seek medical attention, even for minor cuts. Many corals contain toxins and will also splinter in your skin, causing infections.

    (continued)

    Living the Dream!

LynnCoggin on July 23, 2009 at 7:43 pm
  421. (continued)

#5 – Do not overestimate your swimming abilities. If the surf is big and you are not a strong swimmer, don't venture into the sea. (But, what do you mean I can't swim like Michael Phelps?!?!?!)

#6 – If you get caught where the waves are breaking, duck under the waves and allow them to pass over you. Getting repeatedly hit by breaking waves is no fun and will tire you out, increasing the risk of drowning. You only need to dive a couple of feet below the surface. The wave should pass over you very quickly.

#7 – If you are really struggling and can't get back to shore, get out beyond where the waves are breaking as it will be a lot calmer there, as long as you can keep yourself afloat. Catch your breath and signal for help.

    (continued)

    Living the Dream!

LynnCoggin on July 23, 2009 at 7:51 pm
  422. (continued)

    And, finally….

#8 – Watch out for rip currents during the rainy season. These can be very dangerous and can be strong enough to pull even the strongest swimmers out to sea. If you are caught in one, do not fight it. Swim parallel to the shore and when you are out of it, head towards shore at an angle away from the current.

Okay, I feel better now (whether you chose to read them or not)…phew!

    Living the Dream!

I am really hoping they build a home that matches the look and feel of the more traditional architecture most commonly found in the east coast. This will help dispel the misconceptions that a lot of people have regarding green homes. They do not have to be contemporary and extreme to be green. Can't wait to see the home.

  428. It seems all these homes are always built in New England or somewhere along the eastern or gulf coasts, down south out west and and a long the west coast. What about here in the Midwest, like Wisconsin for instance. Personally I would like to HGTV come with basic design concept of several different designs. Then hold the sweepstakes for the green home. Choose the winner and then let the winner decide where it will be built, after all the winner will be calling it home, should he/she have a say on where it will be built, instead of having to packup and move into this new house. Shouldn't the new owner also have a say on the landscaping and the interior decorating too. HGTV should think of this for the home of 2011 and let a person win it first and then build where the winner would like to have it.

  430. I would like to see a home that has doors that are wide enuf to get a wheelchair thru. Even if I was not going to live there. I would like to use a restroom. On the outside chance that a person gets hurt on the job and only needs the chair for a short period. Most new homes are not thinking of a person that is just visiting and needed to use the restroom. And once that you are in the room, you must make it useable. This is the reason I can't go see many of my friends. They have had homes built or bought new homes and no one ever thought of getting hurt and are confined to just a few rooms.
If you are a builder and think you have done a good job getting the customer what he wanted. Step back and get into a wheelchair and confine yourself in the chair. No movement of your legs and try to use the house as you would do in a everyday situation. Can you use the toilet. Can you get close enuf to wash your hands and not drip water getting the towel. Sitting on the shower chair can you reach the hose. .Can you reach it to take down and put it back up w/o any help? I could go on and on. Thanks for letting me vent some of my pet peves. Best of luck on that new house.

  432. I just came back from overseas with my children visiting my inlaws. It was great. Before I left I was looking up all the light houses in Maine, Maryland, and Mass and I had a feeling it was Mass for I have cranberries in my yard. I just couldn't find the right lighthouses on line to match it. I know about the cranberries for I have them in my yard. For me I have always dreamed of living in a lighthouse so I had to check the lighthouses out… Plymouth is such a great place for a dream home with all the history there. I am from the South shore, twenty minutes from Plymouth. Its a beautiful quite place to live so the next winner will enjoy this area and of course the Dream Home. Good luck and the Dreams must go on……….

  434. Hi people.
I have something to say, about aloe Vera, something about which you wrote above, about health and minerals… For a long time, I and my good friend use the products of the Forever Living. We every time see the good results and also we earn money for our families and we are happy. My friend works with Aloe vera in the company of forever living has more than 5 years (My friend works ONLY in the forever living and has a wife and three children). I know AloeVera products for skin care for a long time, but a year ago, began working as a distributor in the Forever Living Products Company.
Of course, the job is so hard, but in no other case, You can earn so much money with so much fun and smiling faces around…
So if you want to discuss something about which you wrote above, and about my experience with Aloe products for weight loss, I’ll always be glad to talk.

Best regards from Washington and have a nice day!
