Building Homes from Scraps

I was thinking about our HGTV Green Home and how we strive to build a sustainable, eco-friendly home that features the latest in green innovations. And then this article popped up in the New York Times about Dan Phillips, a self-trained carpenter and home builder from Huntsville, Texas, who is building homes from scraps, trash and reclaimed building supplies. His story is an inspiration. And frankly, wouldn’t you love to own one of his homes? I know I would. Click through the photo gallery and come back to chat. Should we follow Dan’s lead with respect to the build of HGTV Green Home?

  1. Interesting. For my taste? I do not like the bones used. It is more like this spanish architect in Barcelona – Gaudi. Only it is made from scraps. Not bad, but for me it is way too curvy, unusual… but I like some of his creations

  2. Creative!! I don't think that I would like to sit in the "Cattle Bone" Chair.. plus I would be afraid that I would be haunted by them!! But, it just goes to show you that anytime we work hard on something, we take more pride. And, when you build a house from salvaged items, you are certain to understand that less is more. Can you imagine the conversations, while digesting another bottle of wine to add to Dan's house? Great Job, Dan!! Thank you again Mary, for thinking of your bloggers !! Love life by living green!!

  3. How cool is that! Salvaged wine corks to form cork flooring?! I love it—and think of all the great memories of good times with friends and family that your floor would hold. Forget about talking walls; if cork floors could talk! And the bases of wine bottles that function as stained glass? What's a few wine stains on the carpet when you can end up with such a unique work of art in a door or window.

The Osage Orange Wood countertop…so many clever ideas, although I think the picture frame corner ceiling would have a little too much impact for my taste. The old ship's wood-burning stove is a memorably classic piece, but the cattle-bone chair back and address numbers are a bit macabre—but certainly unusual. Finally, the old shingle roof arranged by color is sure different. What fun putting these unique and environmentally friendly materials together to form a one-of-a-kind home—for very little money.

All in all, a brilliant use of scrap wood and building materials that provides a well-needed function AND keeps it all out of the landfills. Bravo, Dan Phillips. Thanks for another interesting thread, MARY.

  4. Dear Mary: Dan Phillips certainly is an inspiration & I loved reading about him in the New York Times! Some of the interesting aspects I got from his ideas are endless, but I have to say my favorite was how he used old shingles, arranged by color, to build the roof of what he calls "the storybook house." WOW!! His wood-burning stove from an old ship in his "tree house" wasn’t too shabby either!! And, my goodness, the wine bottle ideas are excellent, along with the cork flooring (I’m thinking it represented a lot of good times & maybe a few hang-overs as well)! One of his ingenious ideas had to be the picture frame corners that were used to create a ceiling! I guess being at the right place, at the right time, is paramount! From cattle bones, slices of orange wood, mirror shards, and broken tiles, this builder proves that "the possibilities are endless."

  5. MGTOTD: Use a yardstick for retrieving small parts that roll under an appliance or behind a cabinet. To pick up nuts or bolts, tape a small magnet to the end of the stick. To recover non-metallic items, wrap the end of the yarstick with double-stick tape and start poking!!

**I know some of my tips are not for the 'lean & green', but they just make life easier!!!

  6. Marie Miller, for all it's worth, I've sent two messages to HGTV's tech dept regarding the bizarre posts appearing lately under the Dream Home blogpage "Newest Comments" window. I am very concerned about the computer safety issue if the security of their systems (or of intensedebate) has been breached. The comments are either odd advertising junk or disjointed political statements posted under old blog threads. It's most disconcerting. I hope it is thoroughly checked out, immediately, by the appropriate techs for any sign of abuse within their system programs. I would like to be reassured about access as I too have experienced computer problems lately that have been significant and unusual.

  7. Coop – Ditto! I hope they get it taken care of once and for all.

Mary – Very cool stories and photos….thanks for sharing!

Love the cork floors…could dance the night away on them and it wouldn't hurt your back!

  9. I think it is great that someone came up with a way to help people with a low income to own a house that is both unique and affordable. But I am wondering, how much does a home made up of recycled materials cost? I like the photo gallery! Great job Dan Phillips!

  11. Dan Phillips is a talented and ingenious man. A self trained carpenter with amazing recycling skills. Wow! His houses are not for me. I will wait for the Plymouth Green Home (and the floor plans, that I feel are coming soon). Take a tip from Mr. Phillips? That stove would be nice.
I don't understand the aversion to the bones. Our ancestors have been using animal bones creatively for centuries. My only question on his bone chair…is it comfortable? Probably not and I hope it ends up in a museum somewhere.

  12. Coop and Marie: I don't understand what is going on at the Dream Home blog, but you have scared me. Please tell me when it is safe to go there again. Thanks.

  13. I went to DIY to check on the Blog Cabin. Very nice, but couldn't find out where it is built. Could someone tell me? I'm getting sleepy….dreaming about the Dream Home blog……not working…..pleasant dreams……zzzzz

Katydid on September 25, 2009 at 11:32 pm
  14. Katydid, I continue to access and post in the Dream Home blog. I've no idea if there is a technical glitch at all, which may only be minor even then. I'm sure if HGTV thought that any problem warranted notice, they'd give us a heads-up. I just mentioned, for Marie Miller's benefit, that I had sent two requests to HGTV customer support, but have not yet had a response. I imagine the Dream Home blog is as safe as anywhere on the internet these days, but it pays to be vigilant.

As to your next post, and question, the DIY Blog Cabin is located in scenic mountains just outside of Marshall, North Carolina, in a private community called The Preserve at Little Pine. Marshall is north of Asheville, NC.

Due to reasons known to the DIY Network and The Preserve Community, previously scheduled Blog Cabin tours have been cancelled, and DIY will award the winner the $500,000 cash value rather than the Blog Cabin Grand Prize Package as originally stated in the contest rules.

DBCoop on September 26, 2009 at 1:50 am
  15. Coop thanks for the information on the DIY Cabin. I haven't been entering, since I had no desire for a cabin in the mountains. With a prize of more than 500K, I suddenly became an avid enterer! I don't really care for HGTV having us sign in now to access the site. Oh well maybe it will eliminate those junk posts that keep popping up in the Dream & Green blogs.

EdinOregon on September 26, 2009 at 6:51 am
  16. Coop, thanks for the info on the DIY Cabin, I started entering the other day!! After looking over the floor plans !! Hi ED!! Hope all in going well!! Katydid, that was a joke that I placed regarding the cattle bone chair and the haunting! Just forgot to place an LOL to express so! Marie, all of your tips are great!! and helpful!! We can't always be lean and green!! It is all about the efforts that we make!! Love life by living green!

reneelovesgreen on September 26, 2009 at 8:50 pm
  17. Coop: Add my thanks for the info on the DIY Cabin. As I prefer beaches to mountains, I would happily accept the $500,000.
Renee: Bet you have fun at Halloween rattling the bones of the dancing skeletons. Me too. My comment was directed to a few other bloggers, Dumb of me to make it sound so serious.
Guess I'll go over to the Dream Home blog to catch up and hope I don't get haunted by those junk posts.

Katydid on September 26, 2009 at 10:43 pm
  18. Hi there. I didn't realize that there were issues with the Blog Cabin. This is from the DIY website:

"Unfortunately, however, various issues have prevented us from closing on the house and being in a position to award it to a winner. DIY Network no longer has any affiliation with the developer, nor are we involved with the developer’s apparent efforts to sell the 2009 Blog Cabin. Instead, we are pleased to announce that we will be awarding a cash prize that is equivalent to the approximate value of the home, an alternative that is described in the 2009 Blog Cabin sweepstakes rules.

While we’re disappointed that we will not be able to give this home away, we know that a cash prize of over $500,000 will certainly help one lucky sweepstakes winner still realize his or her own fantasy getaway. We are already working toward securing a location for next year’s Blog Cabin that will be innovative and full of surprises."

It's a shame for the network. I think they are doing what they can do this year and I know they want next year to be better. Thanks DIY for all of your efforts!

  19. Well, Lynn, wouldn't we like to know all of the details about the DIY Blog Cabin bombshell. Difficult to imagine getting that far into the construction process and having the deal fall apart.

It's truly a shame, but then, many people who otherwise hadn't entered, for various reasons, will now do so with the lure of the cash replacement prize (late in the game, but it only takes one entry to win!)

DBCoop on September 27, 2009 at 2:07 am
  20. I did not realize that DIY's Blog Cabin was in jeopardy! Just been spending too much of my time figuring out a lesser problem with the pitfalls of my computer crazies!! On to say about the BC, if there are liens on the property maybe this outcome is best for everyone involved? And, the cash prize is hardly a consolation, but the vision of winning the BC becomes less alluring. I do hope the Preserve Communities concept survives and flourishes, because I think it is a great idea and needs to succeed on so many levels. Needless to say I hope the Blog Cabin concept continues, fluorishes and learns from this situation!

  21. MGTOTD: For health reasons, it’s safer to opt for heat-resistant glass or ceramic containers for use in microwaves. It’s also greener: It reduces our reliance on plastics, which create CO2 in their production, and cuts down on trash.

Marie on September 27, 2009 at 2:15 pm
  22. I agree, Marie; I avoid using plastics or styrofoam in microwaves. Most takeout containers, water bottles, and plastic tubs or jars made to hold margarine, yogurt, whipped topping, and foods such as cream cheese, mayonnaise, and mustard are not microwave-safe.

Don't microwave plastic storage bags or plastic bags from the grocery store.

A recycle symbol does not mean a container is safe to use or reuse in the microwave oven. Only a microwave-safe icon or wording to that effect does.

Wax paper, kitchen parchment paper, or white paper towels are alternatives.

Remember, Prudent Pilgrims eat lean and go green!

NoSpinZone on September 27, 2009 at 3:17 pm
  23. I second the comments from NoSpinZone. I'm not comfortable putting plastics, food and microwaves together, regardless of what the FDA says!

My goal is a "no trash zone", whether it's in Plymouth, Phuket, or Paraguay!

DBCoop on September 27, 2009 at 3:40 pm
  24. NoSpinZone: Thank you for your elaboration of eatting lean and going green!!! We Prudent Pilgrims do need a nudge now and then to keep lean and green!!

Coop: I agree with your "no trash zone" as a universal statement! Thank you!!

Marie on September 28, 2009 at 12:04 pm
  25. MGTOTD: Keep Your Junk out of the Pacific Ocean Trash Vortex!! Okay, so there's a massive continent made of refuse floating around in the ocean. So what do we do about it? Let's not contribute to it, for starters. And while we should be doing our damnedest to keep trash out every body of water, keeping your junk out of the toilet bowl is good practice! It's not exactly a body of water per se, but keep your non-biodegradable junk out of there too—trash has a nasty way of finding its way out of the sanitation systems and bleeding into local ecosystems, including rivers!!

Marie on September 28, 2009 at 12:08 pm
  26. He is indeed an artist – unfortunately, here in Massachusetts, i see glaring problems with the building inspectors – would love to be able to get away with what he has done – Ironically, on the list of Historic Places, are some shacks in the National Seahore on Cape Cod – originally built from found wood from shipwrecks, these shacks were built for summer use by the families of Coast Guard men stationed there – after a hundred years, they are still being used, even without the building codes of today……..

CCSteve on September 28, 2009 at 12:30 pm
  27. And the shacks are 60 miles east of Plymouth (2010 Green Home location), in Provincetown, the original Landing site of the Mayflower

CCSteve on September 28, 2009 at 12:33 pm
  28. Katydid, I took it as a joke as well!! You didn’t sound too serious to me!! Marie, thanks again for your tips!! I think people just do not care about the trash in the ocean, floating around bigger than the state of TX!! We have so many conveniences that have made life easier, but many of them are harming us more than helping. The more of us that wake up, the better!! Love life by living green!!

  29. I'm sure that the build cost per square foot of Dan Phillips' recycled homes is a lot lower than the usual starting point of $200.00 per square foot in California.

DBCoop on September 28, 2009 at 7:23 pm
  30. I do care about the trash in the ocean and I understand most of it is plastic bags. I refuse to take plastic bags from the store, and if I have forgotten to bring my canvas totes and they don't offer paper bags, I will carry the items by armload out to the car. I recycle my paper bags back to the stores. Of course, this is all in my imagination, because I don't drive anymore. And if friends or family are kind enough to bring me supplies in plastic bags, I thank them, use them (the bags) for waste basket trash and put them in one big plastic garbage bag for our Condo pick-up at the curb.
Sorry guys, I don't usually make such trashy comments.

Katydid on September 28, 2009 at 10:36 pm
  31. Katydid, I have also learned to carry a large beach bag with just my wallet and organic lip gloss in it… so, if in a pinch I have to run to the store…I stuff everything in my bag!!! Plus another great idea is to leave a ice cooler in your trunk, pull it out at the store…sometimes, getting free ice from making friends with the Deli Dept. or Store Manager.. and pack all of your cold items in… if no cold items needed.. but dry items in and it is easier to carry!!!! Also, if you get stuck with plastic trash bags, bring them back to the store to recycle!!! Love life by living green!!!

reneelovesgreen on September 29, 2009 at 1:56 am
  32. Katydid & reneelovesgreen: I, too, carry my canvas bags when shopping. In fact, some stores give discounts for using theirs. I also like the idea of keeping an ice cooler in the trunk of the car…never thought to ask for free ice from the Deli Dept…great idea!

Anyway, thank you for your wonderful thoughts and ideas! Go Lean & Green!!

Marie Miller on September 29, 2009 at 12:43 pm
  33. MGTOTD: You can actually save a lot of money by going green! It makes sense if you think about it! It's all about using less stuff, re-using things, and avoiding waste! Let's be reminded of things your mom did, or your grandmother, but it doesn't mean you have to move back to the farm. Many of the new technologies now help us save water, energy and time. So, my tip of the day is to find your own green path.

Marie Miller on September 29, 2009 at 12:47 pm
  34. Renee and Marie: Thanks so much for your tips. I will pass them on to my daughter, who shops for a family of five, and sometimes brings me things as well. That ice cooler in the trunk is a wonderful idea, as I have had to clear my fridge so she could pack dishes she has made for a church picnic that evening. Thanks again.

  36. MGTOTD: A couple of creative ways to reuse packing peanuts:

Make ice last longer: Put packing peanuts in a sealable plastic bag and place on top of the ice in your ice chest. The ice will last longer and everything will stay colder.

Potted plant drainage: Substituting packing peanuts (the non-biodegradable variety) for gravel in the base of potted plants not only provides good drainage, but it makes the containers much lighter and easier to move.

    Staying Lean & Green!!

  37. Just got through reading some of the news produced by HGTV Pro about Pinehills in Plymouth, Massachusetts! Did you know that Pinehills was the winner of the National Association of Home Builders' "Best Smart Growth Community" award and "Best Master-planned Community" award, featuring intimate neighborhoods of finely crafted custom homes, single-family homes, cottage style homes, townhomes and luxury leased apartments, created by eight award-winning builders, all sited for views and privacy?

Way to go HGT V…I look forward to going green in Pinehills!!!

  40. It seems like some of the photos in the featured article would lend themselves better to an Adirondack-style green home and/or furniture.

In terms of repurposing furniture for Plymouth, I don't know if any thought has been given to giving a rowboat or canoe new life as a nightstand, bookcase, or glass-covered coffee table? Or, salvaging copper tin ceilings as kitchen backsplashes or bathroom ceilings? Or, incorporating antique chandeliers? And, in terms of the ultimate scrapping, there's always quilting (which would be great for chilly New England nights).

Thanks for sharing the article, Mary. I can't wait for the unveiling. I am confident Linda and the green team will hit the ball out of Fenway Park.
