  1. Marie Miller, looks like HGTV was listening, when you asked for a light house design. I don't know if that is a clerestory or if they built a light house tower just for you?

EdinOregon on September 30, 2009 at 7:15 pm
  2. Looks like it's coming along nicely. Good luck with the rest of the construction.

Greg Castillo on September 30, 2009 at 10:14 pm
  3. When can we see the floorplan?

HHH on September 30, 2009 at 11:07 pm
  4. Hey HHH! The floorplan is over to the right in the "HGTV Green Home Virtual Tour" box.

Hey Mary! Thanks for all of the hard work! I think that the whole thing is great and that HGTV will build their best Green Home yet! I'm Greening with pride!

    @BuckeyeRidley on September 30, 2009 at 11:20 pm
  5. This house looks like it will be beautiful.
That floorplan is for the house they already gave away.
    Have a great day.

HHH on September 30, 2009 at 11:47 pm
  6. Wow! Looks like it's going to be two (or more) stories. I bet that design has a lot to do with green conservation. Thanks, Mary, for posting the photo. We really needed that. I'm so intrigued and can't wait for the floor plans I know it's going to be a very special house.

  7. Hi EdinOregon: Could it be? It does resemble a lighthouse at this point! Wouldn't that be magnificent? I am in love with this Gream Home already!!

Marie Miller on October 1, 2009 at 1:49 pm
  8. Dear Mary: Thank you for the cam shots of this upcoming GH2010! It seems that the construction of this home is way ahead of schedule. Is that true? I am really liking what I see here especially since it does seem to have a lighthouse shaped tower! I can hardly wait for more detail.

Marie Miller on October 1, 2009 at 1:53 pm
  9. Mary….thank you for the newer pics. My cousin has NOT contacted me with pics of GH. Did someone catch her before she could snap a few? By the way….she's fond of lighthouses, too. It was something her dad enjoyed collecting; and, my mom enjoys collecting photos of lighthouses as well. How wonderful light houses ARE to guide captains and their ships to safety on the rough seas. OK….beginning to think of "Candle on the Water" sung by Helen Reddy years ago….as she kept the lighthouse shining for her captain.
How many light houses/songs about Guiding lights are there? I came up with one.

Trish on October 1, 2009 at 2:06 pm
  10. Oh, I am so excited!!!! Looks like a front porch!!! I love all of the windows and the "lighthouse shaped" tower!!! I can't wait…. I can't wait… Looks like a grand fireplace in the front, for the living room…. Mary, are they going to continue the fireplace up for the master bedroom up stairs??? I hope! I will cross my fingers.. I would love a fireplace in the bedroom!! Marie, yes, I saw a special a few months ago on the e-cigarette… Thanks for reminding me, so I can call my mother and tell her to use them…to see if we can her to quit!!! She tried the medication and had too many side effects!!! Katydid, I can't wait to see what eco-conscious features are used throughout the Green Home!!! And I hope that they include another garden!!!!! And an outdoor kitchen, maybe with a pizza oven!!! I would be out there baking all year… breads, cookies, cakes, roasting meats, veggies and of course pizzas!!! Do you think that they will pay attention to my wish list?? Hi ED!! Love life by living green!!

reneelovesgreen on October 1, 2009 at 4:21 pm
  11. The house looks great, but I have to wonder if this is a green project then how many trees were taken out in order to build the home? I also wonder why some trees couldn't be spared, the lot looks empty of any vegetation, why?
I realize I am not an architect, but this is a green job and someone should have told him that keeping as many trees on the lot is an important aspect of building green.
OK, sorry about the bi*ch session, I do love the house and I am sure when its done that other trees will be planted on the lot.
I would like to know if any of the trees that were removed are being used?

DaddysDarlin on October 1, 2009 at 5:19 pm
  12. The exterior design sketches captured all the charm of New England in the master-planned Pinehills. ….Thank you, Mary and HGTV, for posting the updated photos. It looks beautiful. I am sure the completed green home will be even more stunning with the fall foliage. And, any winner will look forward to celebrating their first Thanksgiving (among many) in Plymouth! Thank you for picking such a great location!

  13. are the other homes light house style too, or will this one be the odd one out?

Jessica Johnson on October 1, 2009 at 6:05 pm
  14. Hello!Dear: Mary, thanks for the updates in
the Green Construction , I wonder what sorprice Mr.T. will have for all HGTVGH fans :)

Alma Casiano on October 1, 2009 at 2:07 pm
  15. I wasn't sure, so I increased the image to 400% to see if the two faces of the tower had center panels that were inset. It appears as though they do. Reneeloves green, thanks for pointing out the fireplace. The 400% helped me to see that a little more clearly, too. Wow…a fireplace in bedroom…….ahhhhhhh….how nice. Knowing how people are with being green….exactly what type of fireplace is going in?

    As for Thanksgivings…..what a location!

Trish on October 1, 2009 at 7:58 pm
  16. Hi reneelovesgreen. I keep looking at the house & lot. I am concerned about the house being in a depression. I remember what heavy rain does in MA. With the full basement & low land I would be very concerned about flooding. I remember the hurricane in the fifties that flooded a large part of the state. I remember watching old mills collapse in the river in my home town from the floods. I hope the lot view is just an optical illusion, other wise the tower may be ones refuge in a storm!

EdinOregon on October 1, 2009 at 9:02 pm
  17. Thanks for you guys describing things my poor eyes can't see, like a fireplace and front porch. However, that tower does not remind me of a lighthouse at all (sorry, Marie). I see it as maybe a summer/winter solarium .growing plants? catching water? Renee: a garden of some kind is a must and an outdoor kitchen???? what a plus!
a fan: Ah, there you are. If the cam keeps going through the next few months, we should be able to see the fall foliage colors change (except for the pines) in the background.
Ed: How do you know this house has a full basement? Most homes in Michigan do, but many do not. So sorry you had to live through that horrible storm. I wonder too why they have taken all the trees and leveled the land. Hope all will explained by HGTV in good time.

Katydid on October 1, 2009 at 11:42 pm
  18. Katydid, the photos from #62 to #68 show the construction of the basement. The tower may just be a cupola, to let the hot air out in the summer.

EdinOregon on October 2, 2009 at 3:03 am
  19. Coop: Where are you? I want to see your comments on the construction photos? I'm thinking this might be the home that comes closest to my heart (other than the 2009 DH in Sonoma), 'cause it truly has the form that a lighthouse might have!! The top of the tower is excellent & hopefully affords a fabulous view from the Pinehills Estates!!!!

Desparately awaiting your comments in Dream Land upon a home in a Tower full of Asperations!! But, still remaining Lean and Green as a Pilgrim in Plymouth Pinehills!!

Marie Miller on October 2, 2009 at 12:48 pm
  20. Hi Katydid: You may be right, but I'm Greaming at this point & this may be the best chance I may ever have to a Lighthouse Dream! It very well may be a summer/winter solarium and/or or place to grow plants! Catching water may be a great guess being this is a Green Home, but doesn't matter 'cause I will forever use my imagination & call it my "light-house!!"

Marie Miller on October 2, 2009 at 12:56 pm
  21. Hi again, ED. I completely understand your concern. But, I would think that the crew at HGTV and the builders they hired have made sure that the lot chosen is protected from the high rain and out of any flood zone range. Looking at a few of the pictures, it looks to be up hill, if you look at the woods to the south…. the mounds of dirt around the house are from the basement carve out and looks to be creating an optical illusion. I am sure that they researched the site throughly including the visit to the title office, etc. But, you know with all of the environmental issues (rising ocean levels/crazy weather) there are new areas being flooded, so there is no guarantee. I believe that the "tower" is a cupola and part of green building. Circulating the air, plus what a great visual effect. Daddysdarlin, HGTV makes sure to protect its surrounding and to use all local products when building their Green Homes. Any wood that they may have cleared, they use… Last year, they made a lot of the furniture themselves, from left over wood supplies, etc. This is a development that they are going into and usually the developers have cleared the lots for each home to be built upon. But, no worries, they will keep it green and they will protect any trees that they can. Trish, I know, I love fireplaces…. You can save a lot of electricity..and Marie, I think that burning some of the pinon wood that we all love would be awesome for the Green Home, too. Katydid, I know, how exciting….. I've got my fingers crossed. And I can't wait to see the foliage!! And I bet they have the water retention barrels figured out….also, they will have to store them differently because of the extreme weather (also the need for a solarium, great idea Katydid) Can't wait to see their Green Features!! I know that they are going to strive for the Platinum LEED Certification!!! A fan, what a wonderful visual that you just gave me… celebrating Thanksgiving!!! I think that we will take that time this year, to drive up north for my son to see the beautiful foliage… What a wonderful excuse, to go take a peak at the Green Home!!! Marie, time to come up with a great Thanksgiving drink…. maybe with an extra shot, to calm my excitement!!! Coop, I know you have more details on the lot !! You always have such great information!! Talk to you all soon!! Love life by living green!!

reneelovesgreen on October 3, 2009 at 11:44 pm
  22. reneelovesgreen: I will certainly come up with a dandy & delicious Thanksgiving drink for you.

P.S. Just curious, how did you post such a long comment without having to split it in half??

  25. reneelovesgreen: Okay, here we go, the first tantilizing & delicious Thanksgiving Day Drink:

    Flaming Pumpkin Pie Drink Recipe

    Ingredients to use:

    1.0 tsp. Cinnamon
    1.0 Part Kahlua Coffee Liqueur
    1.0 Part Bailey's Irish Cream
    1.0 Splash Goldschlaugger Peppermint Schnapps

Directions: Pour in kahlua then top with Bailey's then pour a splash of Goldschlaugger on the top. Light it and shake cinnamon on the top. Blow it out and down it.

    WOW!!

Marie Miller on October 4, 2009 at 7:03 pm
  26. Marie Miller, I don't know where the pumpkin pie comes in but the drink sounds great! I always liked the fireworks when sprinkling cinnamon over flaming liquor, especially when there were bananas & cherries over ice cream involved.

EdinOregon on October 4, 2009 at 9:56 pm
  27. The pictures look great! It looks like the home is going to have a one car garage, but when will we be able to see the floorplan? Soon I hope.

    W. on October 4, 2009 at 10:42 pm
  28. Marie: Wow! To think I could eat my pumpkin pie and drink it too. I love cinnamon, but not too fond of fireworks. Ed, if you would make it for me I would happily supply bananas, cherries and vanilla ice cream
OK, our next holiday is Halloween. Does anyone have a Halloween drink that doesn't include dry ice (I can skip the visual effects)? Not too sweet, not too dry, not too potent but not too mild? We have a wonderful Cider Mill in the neighborhood, but I'd love to try something different this year.

Katydid on October 4, 2009 at 10:48 pm
  29. Okay Katydid: How about trying a good ole fashioned ZOMBIE PUNCH?

    Ingredients:

    2 Fifths Dark Rum
    2 Fifths Light Rum
    1 Fifth Bacardi 151®
    2 Pints Triple Sec
    3 Quarts Lemon Juice
    1 Quart Grenadine

    Directions
Mix ingredients throughly. Chill with large cake of ice in punch bowl, letting it stand an hour or so before serving. Makes 75-80 4oz. servings.

Your neighbors will all love you when they come a knocking at your door with glass in hand & say "Trick or Treat?"

My friend and I did that Trick or Treat with our glasses in hand one Halloween, but we only managed to visit about four homes before it was hard to stay on the paths!! WOW!!

Marie Miller on October 5, 2009 at 1:01 pm
  30. Katydid: To add spark to your Halloween party with an unusual punch & with the option to leave out the alcohol, how about:

    Gremlins Rule!

    Ingredients:

Margarita mix (Tequila optional) or lemonade (optional)
    Grenadine
    Skewer
1 each Kiwi, lemon, lime, orange
    Maraschino cherry with stem
    Toothpicks

    Directions:

    1. Serve chilled margarita mix on the rocks and add a splash of grenadine.

    2. Skewer a slice of kiwi for the face. Cut a cherry in half and attach with pieces of toothpick for eyes. Slip the skewer into the beverage glass. Add the cherry stem for a smile and twists of lemon, lime, and orange peel for hair.

    FUN FOR ALL!!!!

  31. MGTOTD: FREE MONEY FOR CONSERVING: Who knew? PG&E gives a credit on your bill of up to 20% to customers who use less gas during the winter, compared with the average amount you've used the last three years. It's called a "Winter Gas Savings Credit"! It covers the time between January 1 through February 28. PG&E credits you 1%, if you use 1% less, 3% if you use 3% less, and if you call you save 10% or more you'll get a 20% credit on your bill!!!

  32. Yeah Marie!!!! I love your drink recipes!! I love cinnamon and Kahlua !!! YUM!! Guess, I had better pull my hair back in a ponytail. Sorry about your football game. My son was over at his friend’s house yesterday watching (playing during) the game and enjoying chicken tacos!! I think that getting together during sporting games is the best part of it!! I like cooking, visiting and sometimes watching when I can scream a “Yeah”!!! (I only watch when the Cowboys are playing, guess I have to since I was born in Dallas!!) Thank you !!!! Love life by living green!!

  34. Sorry for the double post…. something "mysterious" had a hold of me!!! I was logged into IntenseDebate, but had to refresh… Strange.

reneelovesgreen on October 5, 2009 at 4:39 pm
  35. Marie, maybe you need some Zombie Punch. That should make you feel better. At least the Chargers did finally come alive. I was afraid that they would never score after that dismal first half. Look on the bright side they still have 12 games left to get it together. With all of their injuries I am surprised they are doing as well as they are. It looks like LT is getting back into his running game again. Keep up hope there is a lot of season left! On a side note has Coop flown the coop? Did he take his alter ego Show me with him. Oh where or where has our Coop gone?

EdinOregon on October 5, 2009 at 6:09 pm
  36. I'm still licking my wounds this morning from the Charger/Steeler game last night!! The Chargers scored 14 points late in the fourth quarter, but the Steelers could not be denied….why didn't the Chargers play during the first 3 quarters? The Steeler defense stymied the Chargers ground game, allowing a measly 16 yards rushing and forcing the Chargers to rely solely on their passing game. It was ugly!!

And, to think I've had my bags packed for the Super Bowl Game?

Marie Miller on October 5, 2009 at 1:23 pm
  37. You guys are going to be so surprised next week when the Detroit Lions kick the crap out of the Steelers. OK, I've had two Zombies and I'm in voodoo land. Thanks, Marie Glad to see we all love football. Go Chargers!

Katydid on October 5, 2009 at 11:54 pm
  38. Dear EdinOregon & Katydid: Can you believe that Pittsburgh racked up 497 total yards Sunday night and scored 38 points. They held the ball for more than 40 and gained 177 yards on the ground. The Steelers punted just twice and had five scoring drives of 70 yards or more. The Chargers started playing too late!! They rallied to score four touchdowns in the final 17 minutes, which I think showed what they can do even with all the injuries, so let's hope the bye gives them the rest they need to come back!!!! GO LT!!!!

Marie Miller on October 6, 2009 at 12:14 pm
  39. P.S. Katydid: I really hope that the Detroit Lions do beat the Steelers up!

  40. MGTOTD: Green Tailgating Ideas!!

One of football fans' favorite pastimes during the season is the all-important tailgating party to pay tribute to their teams before the big game. Make your tailgating party a GREEN one this year by following a few easy tips.

Tailgating recipes can often be made ahead of time and brought to the game, eliminating the need for a grill altogether. Whip up a delicious 7-layer dip or spicy buffalo wings at home to bring for your fellow tailgaters.

Propane grills are the way to go if you feel that grilling is a necessity for your tailgating party. Although propane is a petroleum product, it burns much cleaner than charcoal or wood.

Organic ales or those from local breweries are the beers to drink on game day. Bring a trash bag (made from recycled plastic) to gather bottles and cans to recycle after the game.

Reusable glasses, dishes and silverware are a must have for the eco-friendly fan. Throw it all in the cooler when you're done and give it a wash when the game's over.

Marie Miller on October 6, 2009 at 12:17 pm
  41. Great one Marie!! You can also, actually use biodegradable forks, spoons, knives, dishes and glasses made of potato, corn starch and other amazing materials that break down in our landfills. I bring boxes so that I can label them, so no excuses to throw bottles in with the food, etc. One box for food to compost later, one box for the trash items (paper products, biodegradable items) and the last box for the cans, bottles and plastic water bottles. There is also a new barbeque called an EZ Grill, that is recyclable and uses natural charcoal (no chemicals) . It's all-natural ingredients include carbon from corn, rice, wheat stalks and corn starch for binding and mineral oil for ignition. Just thought that I would pass the info along.. Also, the EZ Grill is great to have at anytime….. (emergencies, hurricanes, flooding, etc.) Katydid, I hope you didn't get lost in Voodoo land!! Though it sounds like a great place to be!! Love life by living green!!

  42. Can we leave football for a moment and focus on BASEBALL. The Tigers are battling the Twins as we speak (type). My honey just called in from the other room that it's 3 – 0 Detroit. OMG, I hope they win!!!!
Marie: Thanks for the Gremlins Rule recipe. My daughter will love it (sans alcohol) and the kids will have so much fun making the gremlin faces.
Renee and Marie: My days of tailgating at UofM games are long over, but picnics are still in the game. What wonderful ideas!!!!
Twins got a run…3-1 Detroit. Sports are so unpredictable as opposed to theater. Even live improv. Maybe that's why I love them both so much.
    Gotta go.

Katydid on October 6, 2009 at 10:13 pm
  43. The fireplace is great, right!! I can't wait to see where the outdoor ones are!! They always surprise us!! Sometimes they even change things around on the floorplan…!! So, I guess we will just have to hang in there!!!!

reneelovesgreen on October 7, 2009 at 8:18 pm
  44. Well, after 12 amazing innings, the Tigers lost. Doom and gloom. But I know my many relatives in St Paul and Mpls are whooping it up with glee.
Go Twins!!! Take it all. Make us proud.
Back to much more pleasant thoughts, like the Green Home. Thanks, HGTV.

  47. Hi Katydid: So sorry about the Tigers! I understand the feeling of defeat! I've been waiting for my Chargers to produce a Super Bowl Ring for many, many years! It was always sad to me that Dan Fouts never got to the Super Bowl!! Of all the quarter-backs, I think he deserved it!! Besides, he was probably one of the most handsome of all times!

  48. MGTOTD: End Mountaintop Removal!!

Mountaintop removal is a radical form of coal mining in which entire mountains are literally blown up, and it is happening here in America on a scale that is almost unimaginable.

Mountaintop removal is devastating hundreds of square miles of Appalachia; polluting the headwaters of rivers that provide drinking water to millions of Americans; and destroying a distinctly American culture that has endured for generations.

But mountaintop removal can be stopped, with the help of people like you. Take a look at this site:
