  1. First off I just have to say that I simply adore you, every time I see a video of you talking either about the green home or the dream home you just get me so upbeat.

I am very interested in what makes it so green because that’s amazing but what I'd like to know more of for right now is when can we start voting on the green home because this time I’m finally old enough to do so, also I was wondering if we get the chance to go and visit the site of where the green home is being built because I live in Attleboro which is just a hop, skip and a jump down the road and it’d be so cool to take a drive on by it. P.s New England’s weather is very un predictable so just pack wisely.

  5. GAIL, since PFG has asked all of the possible questions already, I'd like to know the answer to just one simple request—what is the date and exact time I should submit my winning entry? Please just ask for my email address from MARY and let me know ASAP. Thank you.
PS: will the Green Home have those wonderful radiant-heated floors?

  9. Is the loft/tower large enough to be used as a bedroom? Is there a way to use any other space in the house/basement as a bedroom?

  10. GAIL, any chat about HGTV doing a modular or pre-fab Green Home yet? I know very little about them as to the extent of their true "green" potential, but the claims are certainly out there. Any ideas on reliable info sites from your fellow insiders at HGTV?

  11. Wonderful news! I'm pleased to announce that Sacred Wind Communciations, Inc. won the grant for $100,000. Woo Hoo! It's a wonderful contribution they are able to provide. Thanks for asking for my vote!

PFG on October 21, 2009 at 12:57 pm
  12. Well, I do not have much to add after PFG's comment… I do like Coop's question on doing a pre-fab or modular in the future. You could almost do an entire (though small) community…. and more of us could win and then become neighbors!!! Do we know when the viewing will begin?? And who will the proceeds help this year?? And Ed will definitely want to know about the flood zone, etc., as I read a few weeks ago in his comment….. Love life by living green!!

  13. I live in Mass so I don't have questions about Plymouth because I know it pretty well but for those of us who love to fish it has lots of wonderful lakes and ocean to go fishing. I'd love to live in Plymouth! My question is about the home. If I read the floor plan correctly, It looks as though the guest bath upstairs is only accessible from the second bedroom, is this the case?
    Think green……

RGiannone on October 21, 2009 at 5:23 pm
  14. RGiannone: Yes, that's the way I see it. Either through the second bedroom or the Master. There is a powder room on the first floor.
PFG: The floor plans show a two car attached garage. I liked the question: sewage – city or septic? And it made me think of another question, water – city or well? Also, I would like to know what the tower might be equipped to provide. Power, I hope, for either computer use or growing lights for a garden, or is there room for a small bed with reading light?
But I'd really like to know more about the basement. Could part of it be made into a bedroom? Some areas have rules about window egress.
Coop: Wonder about radiant-heated floors. Most homes with a basement that has the heat source don't need them. But I sure understand your need for keeping toasty warm. Me too. I wonder if we rub two Plymouth rocks together, will we get a spark? Oh, Marie, hurry back.

Katydid on October 21, 2009 at 10:37 pm
  15. Thank you Gail for your new post!! This has absolutely nothing to do with the Plymouth Green Home, but where are you when your films are shot? And, who are the people in the framed photo behind you on the shelf? Good luck with your packing, but I might suggest that you pack light to "save" on boarding fees! Besides, wouldn't it be more fun to shop in Plymouth for all new outfits???

Katydid: I am back….for better, for worse!! I have to chime in with Coop and say that all the questions have been implied by PFG! Once those questions are answered, we will be set!!

I do have my only personal question that is very important to the 'Plymouth Pilgrim Phlasher': Will I need to stock up on batteries for my flashlight? Or, will the tower have it's own solar power?

Marie Miller on October 22, 2009 at 2:02 pm
  16. Have you missed the MGTOTD?

Here's a very simple tip that I think you will all enjoy & definitely want to put to use (especially with Thanksgiving on our heels):

To make your mashed potatoes extra fluffy, sprinkle in a tablespoon of dry milk while you do the mashing!!

Marie Miller on October 22, 2009 at 2:04 pm
  17. As much as I love the tower being able to see over the tree tops now, what will happen as the trees grow?

Trish on October 22, 2009 at 2:46 pm
  18. Trish, as the landscape grows and fills in, I guess you'll have to go from Tower to Tree House, although it won't be as warm and cozy in the winter.

There you go Katydid—little did this California kid realize that a basement heat source would keep your feet from freezing fast to the floors during cold winter nights.

Marie Miller, thanks for the mashed potato tip. Now, if I could just remember where the measuring cups and spoons are in the kitchen. I haven't been into those cupboards in ages.

And thank you for the reminder about Thanksgiving being on our heels. I looked, and didn't see any, but I'm sure it'll be there before you know it. Lucky for me, I'll be sitting at a cruise ship dining table, enjoying all you can eat, and no worries about the leftovers. Yum, bring on the pumpkin pie and whipped cream, and the palm trees and piña coladas. It's going to be a Thanksgiving surin' safari!

On that heavy note, I'd better get started with my daily exercise routine..

DBCoop on October 22, 2009 at 4:58 pm
  19. Welcome back Marie! I already asked about power in the tower, solar or otherwise, so I guess we will just have to wait and see. Don't stock up on batteries yet. I'm sure your brilliant smile would light up surrounding areas just like a lighthouse beacon.
Coop: At first I thought you might be on the same cruise as my daughter and her husband. But no, they will be gone for only one week and home for Thanksgiving with the family. Please, after all those "all you can eat" meals, please hit the deck. I mean walk around the decks, take part in some fun activities, (not chess) like rock climbing. Sorry if I'm sounding like a nag/mom/sister/wife/whatever. I just want you on the blogs for a long time. Must I enlist Show Me to help me out?

Katydid on October 22, 2009 at 10:46 pm
  20. Thank you, Katydid, for your concern. Truly, I'm relatively careful with what I eat on board (except for breakfast, when I do enjoy my pancakes, french toast and egg dishes.) However, lunch is also a reasonable affair, and for dinner, I nearly always choose fish, and Show Me makes sure I only enjoy one evening dessert! Plus, I manage to get to the gym each day OR walk the decks (no planks, so far) OR get my exercise wandering through the port towns and island sightseeing. In fact, my friends are always annoyed with me because when I return home, I've managed to only put on one or two pounds at most, which soon comes off. So I should be around for a few more Dream Home/Green Home Sweepstakes! Besides, I couldn't "bear" to miss out on blogging with my online pals.

I'll be sure to wave to your daughter and her husband if I see them passing by on their way north as I sail south into the tropical sunset!

  23. Love the location of the Green Home – a couple questions come to mind as I looked at the floor plans – it seems small…. Is there a plan for a basement? Why only 2 bedrooms? Do you know what the square footage is? I know HGTV never does anything that isn't stellar, so I was a little surprised at the lack of bedrooms, storage space and basement – perhaps I am missing something?

  28. Which direction does the front door face?

Trish on November 2, 2009 at 1:28 pm
  29. I agree HGTV should do an "affordable, green home" to show what can be built by the ordinary people. I recommend Bluhomes.com, they too are out of MA and are high-tech in their design and affordable in their prices. Currently I am having them build me a small (22×28), green, prefab which will be put on my land in Charlestown, RI in Nov/Dec, 09. I've been trying to contact them to film the building of this high-tech "origami" home, it will be delivered as one 11' box, and "unfolded" to the 22' on site. It is the first home to be built with this technology and savings on transportation (delivery cost).

rainydayri on November 5, 2009 at 2:32 am
  30. Sorry there was a typo in my previous post, my new, green, home from Bluhomes is 22×38, not 22×28 as seen in the above .

  32. Hello! I just wanted to say that I live in Plymouth, Massachusetts…actually 5 minutes away from the Pine Hills! I just want to say that The Market at the Pine Hills is wonderful! That whole community is amazing and every home I've visited in the Pine Hills is suberb! So, I'm excited to see what is going to happen with this Greenhouse! When will the actual construction be taking place? How far is done so far? And since a lot of those homes in that development are pretty close together, is this new Green Home going to be in close quarters with other homes or will it be set a decent distance apart?

I'm so excited that this Green Home is in Plymouth because the town is absolutely wonderful! That location is about 10-15 minutes from downtown Plymouth where the Mayflower and the Plymouth Rock are! It's such a beautiful town, close to the Cape and wonderful to live. Oh! And the high school is only 5 minutes from the Pine Hills and 2 minutes from the highway! All great aspects!

Ps – If you are thinking of a great place to eat when you visit America's hometown, try Mama Mia's downtown!

Andrea on November 6, 2009 at 5:28 am
  33. Oh! Another plus to that area is that Waverly Oaks is next to the high school (which is about 5 minutes from the Pine Hills) and it is officially going to be the site of Plymouth Rock Studios, a new major motion picture film studio.

  36. A lot a questions on the basement…I see the basement being built on the video's.

    My question are:
Is the basement in place due to the ever encrouching water dilemna?
Is the basement functional for use other than keeping water away from main home above?
Is the basement primed & has a sump pump to run automatically as needed with water occurences due to this locale?
It appeared in video that this home is built upon the sand?
With this home being built upon sand, encompassing a unsteady foundation is this why a basement is needed to stabilize it?
I'm conclude that the basement is necessary for several factors: Useable not in the since for adding useable square footage to this home, but must be prepared for rise in water table/levels? Useable, but the hinderances will come at particular times, like the rainy season, or rise in water levels since sand is imminent?

With water being a known problem in basements, what is this green home doing to keep water at bay? What is this green home going to have to diffuse water, mold growth & these problems in general?

P.S. Big game this weekend: Chargers vs. Broncos!! Can you imagine the thrill of having the next Green Home build near San Diego? My vote is in!!! Just think of the 'tail-gate parties' happening at the stadium...why not throw that ole Tom Turkey on the 'Barbie' and have a different kind of Thanksgiving celebration? Fans, Fair Weather, Football and Feasting...doesn't get much better than that!! Pleeeeeeease cast your vote for Del Sur, San Diego, CA!!!!
