Which Green Neighborhood Would You Choose?

I was catching up on green news this morning, and spied the NAHB’s list of top developments honored at the National Green Building Conference. That got me to thinking about HGTV Green Home 2011. (I know, we haven’t even fully geared up for 2010 yet. But a girl can dream, can’t she?!) If you had to choose the neighborhood for HGTV Green Home 2011, which green community would you pick?

  1. I'd like to see one in Branson MO.

  2. I choose Boulder, CO because to me personally the weather is very nice there and not alot of people live in CO so there would be more building space and more property for the children and they would have more room to play. :D

  3. Actually David I spent about 15 years on the East Coast. The hot humid summers are unbearable and the cold to freezing winters are not much fun. Just look at the weather back there right now.
I worked in Claremont Mesa, Rancho Bernardo & Escondido for almost 20 years & I didn't feel the traffic was that bad, except for rush hour. As far as property taxes go my house in Oregon is worth about 1/3 of what my house in San Diego County is worth, and I am paying more property tax on my Oregon house. The Hidden Lake actually looks like it is smaller than Miramar Lake.

  4. How about somewhere completely different and green? Greensburg, KS perhaps?

  5. Well! I have to agree with W. Seems like CA has been less desirable with HGTV. I am following HGTV on line and on TV for quite sometime. I was surprised as well as disappointed that Islamarada, FL was chosen for Dream Home and another Southeast state for Green home. It doesn't matter anyway, because HGTV just getting the feel of the fans. I have been dreaming a dream of owning a dream home or a green home for about ten years already. I still can't give up. So, dream on.

  6. If I had to choose a city from the NAHB's list of top developments, I would go with either San Diego, CA or Chevy Chase, MD. Both of these locations would be a great place to build Green Home 2011. I am so excited at the possibility of winning a Green Home and moving out of state to one of these cities.

  7. When can I sign up to win the 2010 Green Home? I am new to this. The cost of living is less in the south as well as taxes being much less. We just moved from Wisconsin to Mississippi and a $200k home in MS is $300k to $450k in WI! Plus the taxes on a $200k home is about $5k a year. A 1/4-1/2 acre lot is around $150k! So my vote is south for the winners and you will get more "bang for the buck"!

  8. I think Maine in the Penobscot Bay area…maybe Camden would be ideal. My husband and I went aboard a windjammer out of Camden a few years ago. The views were breathtaking and was quite an adventure. We had aboard lots of professionals who would take this trip over say an ocean-going 5000 person ship. The area is like going back in time and rather peaceful. My vote goes to America's playground….Maine.

  9. Based on the NAHB's list of top developments, I would choose the following locations for Green Home 2011:
    San Diego, California
    Chevy Chase, Maryland
    South Salem, New York
    Kirkland, Washington

Other locations that I think would be nice are:
    Maine
    Hawaii

  10. My daughter lives in Knoxville Tn. and that's a beautiful place. I would love to live there!
The people are kind and friendly, the roads are great, the mountain views are to die for.
You are also so near Virginia, No. and So. Carolina, Georgia and ofcourse Nashville.

  12. Hello everyone!!! I would love to see a green home built in the middle of the city!!! i think having a home that is energy efficient and in location where there is alot of energy being used… ( have it where it gives back to the community) anyways that was just a thought!!! give back!!!!! say san francisco cali!!! that would be a challenge to find a place and exciting…

michael bonavente on January 8, 2010 at 9:19 pm
  13. yeah… but theres too many beautiful homes out there already!!! hopefully they choose wisely… where a green home would make a diffrence!! we need to save our home!! earth is our only place we all can reside.. so we should take care of her!!!

michael bonavente on January 8, 2010 at 9:24 pm
  14. I would prefer if you would have a Green home in the Northeast US such as Cleveland, Ohio, so that people in northern snow bound climates learn how to go green with energy conservation. To learn of best new advances in winter heating options, windows, cooling, geothermal, water heating or whatever is out there for the cold harsh climates of winter. I am renovating an old home and to update it would like to know what is out there.

  15. Sandiego Ca is my pick, but I think New mexico or Arizona would be safer because ocean levels may drown california due to global warming or earthquake.

  16. Fairbanks Alaska – then you can really expand on how best to heat the home, view the vistas, create an arctic wonderland. The outdoors is at your beck and call.

  17. Please come to Kentucky. Kentucky is one of the most beautiful states. It has it all….sunshine, trees, mountains, lakes, rivers, diverse wildlife, 4 full seasons, lots of charm, lots of history and well… I already live here. Kentucky also has some of the cheepest real estate and cost of living in the country. at least here the winner would have a chance of actually keeping the home. Please come to Kentucky.

  18. In reality, what difference does it make where they put this beautiful GREEN home??? It would be great just to have it no matter where it is this this country!!!

LAURA BARBOSA on January 9, 2010 at 8:08 am
  20. Hidden Lake NC would be a great place to live. Great outdoors, peaceful calming lake waters and fresh air! What a life! This is definitely my choice. GO GREEN HIDDEN LAKES NC.

  21. Has anyone considered building the Green home in the small town of Greensburg, Kansas? You know, it’s the greenest town in the US after being totally destroyed in the 2007 tornado. Wouldn’t that be a perfect site for the Green Home???

Joanne on January 9, 2010 at 11:19 am
  22. i think the 2011 home should be in Michigan because it is os beautiful and has so much Nature and there is so much to do i have been living there since i was little and i love it !!!!!!!

KRYSTAL on January 9, 2010 at 5:23 pm
  23. I think Raleigh Nc would be the perfect place for the next 2011 give away. Raleigh is a wonderful place, its beauty, it prices, taxes and the people are great here in Nc. Let's pick Raleigh as the next give away home for 2011.

  24. I drove thru KY on a trip and there was not one inch of that state that didn’t catch my eye. The mountains and scenery were breathtaking even for a flat land Texan like myself. Go there…nothing like it on earth.

sandra nelson on January 9, 2010 at 5:39 pm
  25. I would love the Del Sur location even though the cost of living is outrageous. Colorado is too cold but beautiful and Louisville is in a nice part of the US. The North Carolina area is problematic because of all the pig farms which pollute the environment.

  26. hello every one out there in this great land that is america. i have and ideal how about just fixing the house that people already own,or are buying . if the winner does not have one then a purchased would be in order.at a location of there choice and in line with the budget. thanks to all our armed forces and goodnight every one.

  27. PLEASE AMERICANS!!!!! Listen too what you are writing "WE" all should be thinking if HGTV is in serach for building an American dream home for some family to win and maybe not in the best shape too "Afford" what ever comes attached too the deal is absured!!! Build a home for families that NEED it with no strings attached let the "goverment" pick up the tab for once!! Look at the people from "hurricane" Katrina their still Homeless among others in this "COUNTRY" We all should be asking why? is HGTV doing this for anyway why arent they building for those in need? Taxes will rise anyway cause the government cant stand to not have more money then the average American "ever" There building in areas that dont need it!! Green or not green its still going to cost us all!!! Dreams we should all be dreaming and being grafefull what we all have right in front of us and as Americans we all should be "Paying it Forward" too all for free!! I know someone who "gave", us all who believes, VERY FREELY no strings attached (J E S U S). That whats wrong with America where all Spoiled!!! we've lost our touch to others, other countries envyed us because we were like that, now I know they have voiced there opinons and "Blame" us Americans for the Economy mess were in, some dont care to others they do. Imagine if its hard in NY its hard everywhere in the country!! Come on even the Rich are suffering!!! (im only rich because I have my health and family)!!! Praise God.
    Blessings too all.

    papaco95 on January 10, 2010 at 4:17 am
  28. Very well said!! I agree with that too. Read all those other post about people reasons for why, where, and because. Unreal. I guess those are the people who are not thinking of there fellow Americans only themsleves, Thats why we are in the mess were in now!!! Everyone out for themseleves! Boy we are really setting a great "Example" of America and our future GENERATIONS to come….

    papaco95 on January 10, 2010 at 4:24 am
  29. Oh!! Come on now try good old North Carolina, It is a great state to live in.

  30. I need some help and/or information; Part 1
To my dismay my HOA has declined my request to go solar. My plan was to use my rear south facing roof with low profile black solar panels. No wires would exposed and the frames of the panels would be black as well. I guess it's my fault to be this naive in thinking that a HOA could stop a project this important to our planet. It's my understanding that I can't even take the matter before the township without the HOA approval?!?

My local township is East Fallowfield, Pa just outside Coatesville and West Chester Pa. The HOA for Brook Crossings Development is two people and from what they tell me a Attorney that reviewed the HOA bylaws. They concluded "Section 6.1 of the Declaration, solar panel arrays are not harmonious in design with the
design of your unit or that of others in the community." One of the problems with this statement is Solar Panels/Arrays are not mentioned in the declaration at all.

  31. I need some help and/or information; Part 2
How can this not be harmonious, not only within the development but the planet as well? Is there any person and or organization that can help? Please I can't just sit back and let this happen not just for myself but for those who will want to make a difference in the future!

This type of thinking has put this county light years behind others in the world. What can be of more integrity than spending your time and money converting over to clean energy and reducing your foot print on the planet, saving it for future generations to come.

I'm not trying to be smart or malicious but short of bringing our troops home safe, there can be no greater cause in this country right now.

  32. I think the new green home should be in georgia because there are alot of eco friendly people there and cause its a state and good enviroment

  33. How about the Eastern Shore of Virginia, or the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, or the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia?

Karen on January 10, 2010 at 5:27 pm
  34. Of the four choices , I felt Colorado was the more logical decision . As for N.C. , currently the coast has been problematic with storm conditions . In KY. or at most mid states , they have a humid climate . Actually CA. is not all bad and great for people who have arthritis problems . CA. has accessibility of having fun to almost all walks of life for any bored person and medical availability at probably closer ranges , but pollution is not for me. As for Colorado , It probably has better and healthier living conditions . Which I think more of less air pollution and cleaner water that would be more desirable . I would consider this decision a more green friendly environment .

spencer simon on January 11, 2010 at 5:31 am
  35. Del Sur is my first choice, love the area and climate, I have family near there. Hidden Lake is my second choice but I do not like humidity and I think it gets very humid there. I could not find any info on the others through an online search so I can't comment on them.

When can we enter to win the Green Home?

mugsymurphy on January 12, 2010 at 2:10 pm
  36. NOT SOMEWHERE WAYYY DOWN SOUTH AGAIN! Places where you have both hot summers & snowy winters are the best! Pleaseeeee take this into consideration!=D
