Which Green Neighborhood Would You Choose?
I was catching up on green news this morning, and spied the NAHB’s list of top developments honored at the National Green Building Conference. That got me to thinking about HGTV Green Home 2011. (I know, we haven’t even fully geared up for 2010 yet. But a girl can dream, can’t she?!) If you had to choose the neighborhood for HGTV Green Home 2011, which green community would you pick?

Marie…. My Son would love you.. He always has a book with him.. Yesterday he fell because he was reading while dribbling a soccer ball. Both, he loves… reading just a tad more. No worries he is tough and jumped right back up! Congratulations on your baskets! They sound wonderful. We just donated pajamas for children and Scholastic donated a book to go with each pair of pajamas.. And at last count for the class was 53 pajamas!! Oh, by the way, our Son decided to have a Birthday Party instead of going to Atlantis!! He said that it was the best birthday ever with he and 10 of his friends for 6 hours at a place called Wannado City!!(where children can pretend to be adults and earn money for their jobs… He loved being a CSI Agent, Police Officer;so he could arrest other children, Fire Fighter; they road in a fire truck to a "burning" building, Paleontologist, Archaeologist and an ER Doctor, just to name a few) I am glad that he decided to do so because next year he may think that he is too old to do this type of activity. So now for Spring Break we will be heading to Atlantis …. Because Mommie needs a vacation!!! Glad to see Coop is back to manage the comments and give us interesting solutions! Love life by living green and having a dream!!
Super great idea Marie Miller! Thanks for sharing all these great tips!
Which Green Neighborhood Would You Choose—based on the following weather reports for Tuesday, 8 December?
Raleigh, NC: high of 51, with showers, OR San Diego, CA, high of 54 with scattered clouds? Still not enough to sway my decision either way—so I'll continue looking into the matter….
By the way, expected high temps tomorrow for Plymouth, 42 and partly cloudy, while Sandia Park is forecast a high of 33, with snow showers likely. Brrrr, those black bears are going to be looking for a nice cozy fire and comfy armchair to rest in for the night, so be on the alert, Linda W and Jack T, as you work to fine tune the interior decor of the Dream Home, and the hustle and bustle continues at the Green Home site to put on the finishing exterior touches.
Happy Holidays, Pilgrims!
Marie Miller, they finally updated the Green Cam. Now you can see your beautiful lighthouse tower with it's roof on!!! Coop you forgot to mention that there is an Arctic Blast moving into California right now. 54 degrees is a very low high for San Diego this time of the year. Let's see what next week brings. I know what the humidity in NC is and I can't handle it anymore.
Ahhhhh, I see a revival of this site with comments from my favorite bloggers!!! I have been lonesome to say the least!
Hi EdinOregon: Yes!! The Green Cam is showing exactly what I expected & I am not disappointed! I love this home!! And, you are right about the Arctic Blast as we are feeling it here in Brookings as well!!
Hey Coop: I have this mental picture now of a rather large Papa Black Bear sitting in his easy chair with glasses half way down his nose by the fire to warm those paws while reading the 'Santa Fe Times' as the lucky winner of the DH2010!!!
MGTOTD: Another great way to send your holiday packages when you are out of popcorn or bubblewrap is to slip a straw into the top of a nearly closed plastic bag and inflate. Remove the straw and seal to make a cushion!!
The Green Home is coming along nicely…Thanks for the heads up ED. Now, can we have a little new info? Though, the Dream Home is bursting out… Coop, that sounds beautiful for the Dream Home… cold and snowing.. What a wonderful Christmas the winner would have! So, is the Winter storm going to hit in Plymouth? They say this is one of the biggest storms in 20-30 years!! WOW!! Thanks Marie for your great tips again.. I loved your idea on using real popcorn for packing!! What comes from the Earth should return to the Earth!! Love life by living green and having a dream!!
Midwesterners are delighted to send the east this Snow! Brrrrrrrrrr This is one of those times that a warm fire would be welcomed! Have we figured out the total number of fireplaces at the Green Home?
And…..will there be any special driveway warmers added to the GH? This is one of the things I've dreamt about since finding out they exist. Granted….I'm not the one shoveling lately….but still. The snow IS beautiful….but NOT on the driveway. Are those heating elements for a driveway considered..green? If they are attached to a solar powered unit, will that give them the Green Light?
MARY-
Please!!! Talk to the peopble in charge of the HGTVPro web page for the GH10. The December pictures have not been uploaded, the Time-Lapse photos are the same. There has been nothing new on the GH10 in three weeks.
I like Marie's popcorn MGTOTD too—you can enjoy filling up on popcorn while packing those holiday gifts at the same time. Now that's what I call a great way to have fun multi-tasking!
Rita, If you go to the HGTV pro site and click on the Time-lapse camera (on the left) you will see that they have just updated the photos there. Photo # 110 shows the roof on the tower and the stonework being added to the chimney. They still haven't updated photos on the HGTV main site.
Hello! Dear, Mary, I did my vote for Hidden Lake , Raleigh,N.C.
to be the next 2011 green home, I did not know yet
N.C. and I think that is a pretty area for the next green
dream, but really while a green dream come thru all
places are good
Yey,,, I agree as I would eat the carmel corn!!! Heck, this time of year when you are always on the go… I would eat it plain!! My favorite popcorn right now is parmesan cheese and pepper!! Another good one is curry..
"A fierce winter storm was leaving dangerous ice, heavy snow and vicious winds in its wake from the Upper Midwest through New England!" "Parts of New England also girded themselves for bone-chilling wind gusts and snow accumulations of up to a foot by the end of the day!" Talk about a winter wonderland surrounding our very own GH2010!! WOW!! Button up the overcoats & snuggle in by the fire for a long winter's night!!
The icy cold has hit Brookings as well. My Jade plants are suffering, which has caused me great worry!! I covered them yesterday, but am afraid it was a day late…any suggestions?
The cold weather has hit hard in Brooking as well!! I have a delim
MGTOTD: This will probably be a tip that all of you are well-aware of:
The mess-free way to break up graham crackers or vanilla wafers to make a pie crust is to put them in a sealable plastic bag, then roll a rolling pin over it!!
Marie Miller, here's the info I got from Wikipedia: They will grow in full sun to light shade. However, they do not tolerate extreme heat or overexposure to direct sun very well, showing damage ranging from scorched leaves to loss of foliage and rotting stems. Most of the common species will tolerate a limited degree of frost but overexposure to cold weather will kill them.
Will continue searching for more info.
Marie Miller, went to another site and found this: Q: A friend left her jade plant outside during the first frost. The plant has since gone limp. I told her I wanted to try to revive it. Am I fooling myself? Does this jade have a chance? (e-mail reference)
A: It depends on how low the temperature went and how long it was exposed to that temperature. For example, if the freezing point was a rather sudden, sharp occurrence at 6:30 a.m., but it warmed up quickly, it may be superficial damage. The plant is cooked if the low hit shortly after midnight and stayed there for several hours. Time will tell. In the meantime, don't overwater. If any part of the plant appears to be rotting, cut it back to where there is no rot. If the entire aerial part of the plant rots, dump it.
Ron Smith, is the person who answered the above question and is a Horticulturist, NDSU Extension Service. You can check his website at three w's dot ext.nodak.edu/extnews/hortiscope/houseplnts/jade.htm.
Marie Miller, if commitment, dedication, and faithfulness determined the winner of the Green Home, you'd be the winner hands down! You're always posting and sharing great tips! Thanks for all you do.
Marie Miller, while you work to get those graham cracker crust pies put together for the holidays, I'm dreaming of a Pinehills Christmas. Hopefully, both pies and the Green Home will be ready for enjoyment soon!
Ho-ho-ho, how's that Green Home coming, MARY…is it just about good to go, 'cause all I want for Christmas is to be home (in Pinehills) for the holidays. Such a simple request, one that may come to be in the New Year!
Happy Holidays, Pilgrims.
Coop, where's your daily weather report comparing Raleigh North Carolina & San Diego California. I bet there is a little more difference betwixt the two right now!
Wow! I've been away from the Green Home blog far too long. Took a lot of reading to catch up.
Marie, I should have known you would be faithful with your posts. I can tell you are really in love with this Green Home and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. I adore your tips. Especially the one about shaking the dust mop inside a paper bag. How ingenious.
Renee, your son sounds so adorable, Imagine, reading a book while bouncing a ball. He deserves all the special events you can manage. Just realized I didn't get a book for my 6 year old grandson. He loves sports…..reads about one level above his grade. Any suggestions?
Ed, Thanks for the tip on the updated Green Cam. Gonna take a look.
Coop, was going to ask if Santa could grant you one wish for your destination on Christmas, would you pick the Dream or the Green Home, but then I thought, too easy. You would pick the Turquoise Trail and Show Me would honor the Pilgrims. Just don't take another cruise so soon, we are so happy to have you back!!!!
Katydid… My son is reading novels now.. But, one book that he refuses to donate… is "Eats, Shoots & Leaves", by Lynne Truss.. It is adorable, funny and educational!! If he is reading chapter books… get the Encyclopedia Brown books (mysteries). or Diary of a Wimpy Kid series..(funny). One of the best books ever is Runny Babbit by Shel Silverstein in Hardback because you will want to save it and read again and again.. Hope that helps!! I hope your Grandson has a most awesome Christmas!!!
I'm worried about the property taxes in San Deigo, otherwise that would be my choice.
Whoops, spelled San Diego wrong ! Sharon
I would have to say Oregon would be a great place to build a dream home because it is a beautiful state with lots of natural and historical things to do. This state is not as fast paced as CA and has less pollution. *shh* this is coming from a CA girl that lived in OR for 2 years!
Agreed 100%!!!!
Definitely California. My husband and I are both disabled and being able to live in California during the winter would be my dream. I have many illnesses and one of them is fibromalgia, neck and back pain daily. I am in the bed during the winter for my joints and muscle hurts so bad I don't even want to walk. We had talked about selling our house but would never get enough out of it to live in a warm place all year. Plus I could not leave my family behind. It would be the greatest gift in the world for me to be painless at least one day. My second choice would be North Carolina for I would not be as far away from my family and could get to see my dad who is in bad health. As long as it is warm I would take either home. I am not picky just want to be warm so some of the pain would go away. Thank you for making dreams come true.
I think Jack has done a great job selecting the locations….But if I had to choose I would pick N.C. iT IS LESS EXPENSIVE TO LIVE THEIR & REAL ESTATE MOVES THEIR . GREAT MARKET FOR HOUSING…
I would like to see it in my hometown of Newtown Conn. you could show how it is to be geen and economic in an area where heating costs are high and construction is more difficult than in sandy areas
Coop,
I believe that the next DH will be in Hawaii for several reasons. Just read that our p r e s spent the vacation there to boost tourism. Is this beautiful state having trouble? It shouldn't….it's a beautiful state!
It's heads/tails when it comes to the next Dream Home. I think we just get one….can't imagine 2 being built and the winner having to choose. LOL
North Carolina has the best of all the seasons. Never too hot in the summer, beautiful spring and fall colors, and quiet winters. It is one of the most beautiful states. A green home would fit well in its ecology.
Building for the handicapped would be great. I look walk with a cane and my sister, who I would like to live with me, might be in wheelchair or scooter soon. I would like her and her husband to live with me, since they lost their home. Also, two handicapped showers with benches and safety bars would be great. Also, pick a spot where the taxes are affordable, so the owner won't have to sell the house just be pay them.
On the off chance that you win, and you require special features, try selling the home and building one expressly for you. MLove…seriously, how does having a second floor, etc. discriminate? Get a life and quit trying to stir up trouble by singing the same old tune. I am so sick of people not trying to adapt or find alternatives to their individual issues because they are lazy bums that expect the world to hand them everything. I am a single father. If I win, I am likely to sell and use the proceeds to build or buy my own home that is more to my size. I don't need a huge home…I guess HGTV is discriminating against me and I shouldn't enter because of it….LMAO.
Being 'green' includes not using energy to go everywhere. Any choice that has services nearby, perhaps even employment, and Transit service so you can park your car and not use it until the weekend. I voted for Louisville simply because the name said lofts and that implies density and maqybe a neighborhood.
If I were to bild ah green home it would be in Rockland ME. but on the lake ? Just because .
I live in San Diego and love the weather. But the area around Del Sur, San Diego has major traffic conjestion on the 5 and the 15 freeways. You end up with a small house on a small lot, high cost of living, and one of the highest tax states in the U.S.
Consider also a looming water shortage and lack of culture in the north county. A better location for the 2011 Green Home would be Hidden Lake, Raleigh, N.C. with lakefront living and scenic surroundings.
T0 each his own choice. My pick is not listed. The dream location for me would be on the St Lawrence River among the gorgeous Thousand Islands near either Alexandria Bay,NY or Clayton. Any other place in the USA falls short of this emerald green locale…where a basic goodness exists from sunrise to sunset and a boat is vital and a car a mere convenience. Not a place for fancy dans. Just regulars.
I agree with the one story home, I plan on winning one of these houses, and I'm handicapped, thanks to a drunk driver, who hit me head on. HGTV would build the most beautiful one story ever. You guys are the greatest. Going Green is so wonderful, and I can hardly wait to win my HGTV Green Dream Home. Thank you, CUhlir Riverside, Ca.
I feel that you are quite narrow minded when it comes to California. I was born here, and the reason there are so many people here, is because the weather is so great. If you haven't seen California, you shouldn't bad mouth it. Have you ever looked at a map of the Good Old US of A? California has thousands of miles of wide open spaces, from our Beautiful Coastline, the Beautiful and colorful Deserts, and the mountain areas are breath taking. Per capita the crime is not high. And our Men and Women in Uniform, take care of the ones who don't play by the rules. Every place has its crime and other negatives, however if your life is so unknown and adventurous, and being more friendly in mind, body & spirits that you say you seek, Maybe You Should Be Much More Positive, in the way you look at things……. That way you could enjoy living anywhere in This Country!!! God Bless America, where we can agree and disagree, but most of all where We can live Free, Positive, and Happy anywhere HGTV builds a Green Home. Can I get an AMEN here? Candy Uhlir
AMEN to that Edin Oregon. My bags are packed.
Good Gosh People, Your Getting a Free Home…….. with all those people living in the home you can afford the taxes, just have them set it up so you pay monthly like a house payment. No matter how much the taxes are you should be able to cover it , on a monthly basis. I'm going to win the house anyway, but you can come and visit. We can have wheelchair races. Let HGTV build the house, I will put in the ramps that are needed and be really Happy to pay the Taxes and insurance. Pick Me, Pick Me !!!!!
I too Love the Chargers, and yes the Lions. But did you have to slander everything that is football, by using that very dirty word, raiders. They don't ever deserve a capital letter in there name…. And for me and mine its HGTV all the way……..Go Green Home!
I totally agree with Hidden Lake, NC. Lots of green there for sure and the mountains are beautiful. I also like the fact that less is better. As we get older we want less. (less to take care of) and more to enjoy. So a one story would be great! Have fun dreaming. It will be exciting to see what they come up with. Hats off to whoever wins.
If the taxes and cost of living weren't so outrages maybe more peps would vote this area. Pretty yes, green NO!
I think Cape Cod, Massachussets would be a great place for 2011's Giveaway Home. Everything there is so bautiful, peaceful and breathtaking! A little paradise at the end of a beautiful State! I vote Cape Cod!
Raleigh, N.C.is amazing!
I live in downtown San Diego and love the weather. But the area around Del Sur, San Diego has major traffic congestion on the 5 and the 15 freeways. You end up with a small house on a small lot, high cost of living, and one of the highest tax states in the U.S.
Consider also a looming water shortage and lack of real culture in the north county. A better location for the 2011 Green Home would be Hidden Lake, Raleigh, N.C. with lakefront living and scenic surroundings. Have you been there?
Biased is, as biased people do & you show up with this summations you have here.
Assuming makes those look like an a– & as its the first three letters spelled out that the word amptly allows as with you. I'm a Californian native & I have moved on from what seems to be only be known by you. Some of us, have traveled the world over, several times & back again. Our whole lives, living in many countries, understanding, diversification, & many cultures learned. I have lived well past your dreams & beyond, as I can attest with your ignorant rambling without any skill to a coherent thought in your post. It's sad, being shallow, as you are, passing on judgements with your lack of education. Your biased opinions clearly remove any possible illusion of any intelligence with eluding complete ineptness with life & writing as of yet.
Now, you really stepped up to prove your idiotness with people in uniform as proven time & time again.
Oh WOW, Hidden Lake, Raleigh, NC is 124 homesites on 600 available acres on a private lake…that sounds like heaven to me.
How about an area where the overall cost of living isn't so high? Most of these homes are built in planned communities (where you have to pay association fees, there are a list of "rules" you have to follow, etc.) and the local cost of living is high.
