A Day in Plymouth

This photo was snapped on a cold blustery day in Plymouth, Mass. Can’t you just imagine a short stroll along the beach, followed by hot clam chowder at one of the local pubs? Love it! So tell me, if you won HGTV Green Home 2010, what would you do first? Head to Cape Cod? Tour around town? Find a great place to enjoy a lobster dinner?

The first thing I would do is make a English Garden with a variety of tomatoes and plant a Pomegranate Orchard, cause everyone needs more antioxidents. Then I would find the largest Christian Church to give thanks.
I lived in Hingham Mass in 1976. I lived in
what was called aSalt Box home. I loved it
there. The people are so very friendly and
warm.I loved the fact that you could go to
the docks and get fresh lobster as well as
other fresh seafood.
Awed and inspired by the beauty and my own unbelievable good fortune of winning a home in such a historical place as Plymouth I think I would write a poem.
I can just picture us watching the New England Patriots in this New England home
The one thing, that I have been wanted to do for a long time is!!!!! be able to have my family that is my niece who is paralized and lives in a chair 100% and her son that is six years old be able to live in the same house together now they can not because my home does not have a open floor plan, I am the care giver to both while my husband is the bread winner. That has been a dream of Tara's for a while she misses out on alot with her son. I have taken Sammy Tara's son for six years now, since no one wanted Tara since she has become sick. this would be a real DREAM for Tara and her son
If I should win I think I would spend the first hour or two looking over everything and thanking God I won . Then to the sporting goods store for some new fishing gear. After that I would go eat a good meal of lobster and make my plans for a early rise and a day of fishing and enjoying the weather.
I would walk on the beach with my wife and two daughters. Then I would invite my new neighbors over for fresh Halibut, Cod, and Clam Chowder. I probably would be in culture shock though because I've lived in the state of Washington my whole life. What a dream it would be to win such a wonderful house. Paying the taxes would be the thing I'd be worried about most, and finding a new job for my wife and I in a new community. The odds of it happening are about nil to none, so I won't sweat it. The biggest thing I've ever won is a document that George Washington signed in 1786. Winning a house would be an icing on the cake. Good luck to everyone when the time comes. I am sure it will make a wonderful house for some family God has chosen to live in it.
I would give my house away instead of selling it. I will make up the cost in the energy I will be saving.
First and foremost, (GIVE GOD ALL THE GLORY)for the house and all the good things he has blessed us with, health, great kids and grandbabies.
Retire, we have traveled with our job for more than 25 years.
The first thing I would do is walk through the entire house silently praying and thanking God,because I have never won nothing, especially this big. Then I will take a long, long walk along the beach, loving every sound of the wave of the water, with every sound it will be relaxing my soul. As I continue to stroll along the water taking in everything that have happen. I will be feeling the present of the Sun,taking pictures of the beautiful clouds/sky taking in the most wonderful beauty of nature.. Then, after my long walk, I will then go home and prepare myself the most delicious dinner that I ever had. , I would then, turn in for the night in my beautiful bedroom, and I will sleep the night away.
I would definately hit the beach if I won the HGTVGH2010. Love the tower views. I love the beach atmosphere and the little shops Plymouth has.
The first thing I would do is take my daughter on a naughter walk to show her the beautiful surroundings that will be living in. And I think the next thing I would have to do is go to the local market to get some fresh seafood and try out a new recipe in my new fabulous kitchen!
Yes, Clam Chowder in a big sourdough Bread bowl! Sit and watch the surf, make some new friends and start planning a Clam Bake with a Lobster bisque and Fresh Mediterranean salad while heading home to make a nice cozy fire and read a good book. Head to Bed early thinking of places to go antiquing and hit a few garage sales the next day. Make some more new friends and call the ones back home and plan their visits out. Spend the evening with my dog on the porch and sort through my recyclables. Life is good, I can hardly wait till my Dad, Brother and friends come to see me and enjoy this beautiful place. Don't have a lot of pretty adjectives to blurt out on this comment but I know I would be in Awe if I lived here. !!!!
Depending on the weather – which seems to vary quite a bit, there are so many things you have described in this blog – how would one choose even just a couple to do?? I know that wandering in the local town would be high up on the list though – finding out the unique flavor of the area. It would be a continual adventure checking out life on the eastern seaboard.
The first thing I would do is to check out the whole house inch by inch, corner to corner, cupboards and closests, top to bottom, and room to room. I believe that you must first know your house before exploring outside.
The first thing I would do is get the family to get to know the house. Then the family would go on a tour of the beautiful surrounding area. We all love the beach! Next would be to invite new friends and cook a great seafood dinner in that awesome kitchen.
What a beautiful photo. I've visited Mass several times and am planning to move there. I have not been to Plymouth yet. I would definitely walk the beach with the dogs, venture home for a bath then head to town for a delicious seafood dinner.
First-I'd pinch myself to make certain it was real, and then sit forever, enjoying that view!
Love to enjoy all the pleasure in life IF YOU GOT MONEY TO SPEND AROUND, but if I win the Green Home I'm more than happy to leave in that area….hope to find job there.
But what a wonderful summer home! We are retired and have the time to stay for months. Just would take a lot of money along with the time, to do that.
I remember visiting Massachusetts when i was a young girl of 10. Travelled with my mom to visit my uncles, aunts and cousins who were living in Boston at the time. I thought it was beautiful, very reminiscent of England in many ways. It was the beginning of winter, grey skies and all, but still, I loved it very much. The 2010 HGTV Green Home is in an idyllic setting. The lucky winner will be very happy there. Me? I would feel very much at home in that beautiful countryside. I miss having four seasons very much, it's just not natural! As I said in my earlier post, I would invite all my nearest neighbours to a wonderful party, and would ask each of them to bring a dish, so I could sample the local cooking (which I am sure is great!)…I would introduce myself to as many locals as possible and would invite them over so they could regale me with their own stories regarding the history of the town. And I would indulge in gardening, making the most beautiful, lush, garden possible. I can dream, can't I? It is such a beautiful dream…
My son and I would take a stroll around to explore a new location.
I picture taking a family bike ride in town, by the waterfront. Stopping for a coffee & filling my (bicycle) basket with fresh baguettes, produce & herbs, a bottle of wine, & some seafood packed in ice (just before returning home. Then preparing a nice celebratory dinner!
Hi Ali! I enjoyed reading about your mother-in-law…I also had a wonderful mother-in-law who showed me so many good things about how to live a healthy, happy life! coming of age in the 60's, we have many family and friends who have chosen alternative life styles, grow their own food or support CSAs and Farmer's Markets, wear only natural fabrics, eat only organically or biodynamically grown food, use herbs and homeopathics, Chinese medicine, sound healing, color and aroma therapy…massage and chiropractry and acupuncture…it's a whole new world compared to when I was a little girl…makes me happy and hopeful for the future…now we just have to start using more solar and less petroleum products…and support as many makers of healthy, natural products as we can…the earth needs a rest!
Makes me wish you could be our tour guide, Coop….you sure know how to spend a day well! Thanks for all your comments, here and on the Dream Home blog….I always look forward to reading them!!
I would walk to one of the local restaurants and order takeout probably lobster bisque or something and take it back to my lovely new new home and sit by the fireplace eating dinner and drinking a glass of wine . I have never owned a house before so this would be extra special for me. The next day I would walk around the neighborhood and meet the neighbors and invite them over for a meet and greet dinner. I would also explore the town of Plymouth and take in everything that makes it special.
My husband and I are both born in June. I have always felt a calling to this area of the country. The beaches, the fabulous seafood, and the historic nature of the entire community has me fantasizing that I will be the winner of this new wonderful Green home for 2010. Naturally I love all the homes HGTV completes and offers but this one has me really wound up. It is perfect in every way. I am ready. I will move and I will live in it. Not sell. But live there until the Lord calls me home.
I would love to visit the Plymouth Village and see all down town has to offer, Eat at one of the local
restaurants. Then back to my Green Home to enjoy all its beauty
I would tour the Green Home itself first. Then, explore historic Plymouth. I am an avid fan and researcher of history and genealogy and would be in paradise exploring Plymouth, Boston, and yes, seeing Cape Cod. While I'm in MA, I'd probably visit Martha's Vineyard, as I've always wanted to visit there. And track down some colonial-era gravestones.
I was born in the island of San Michael-Azores where I can see the ocean everywhere.I love the smell of the sea,the shells and watch the seaguls flying around. When I go to Cape Cod and looking this scenery,I see myself back in my island.
I have been to Wood's Seafood, and you're right, the food is out of this world and the view is spectacular. Being born and raised on Nantucket I can appreciate this lifestyle on the ocean.
The first day, after I got up, I would take my wife of 38 years to the METRO CAFE in Manomet for a great breakfast. We would then just drive around this wonderful area.
Fall on my knees and thank God I finally have a small footprint to be proud of…..then walk the beach, and walk, and walk……..
I love the pictures I've seen. I am a flat lander in Oklahoma but love the beach when traveling, one of my favorite things to do. I think the first thing I would do is head to the beach and enjoy a stroll in the fresh air and solitude. Three bedrooms would have been nice but the location makes up for anything lacking in space. I think as the day progresses I would venture out into the surrounding areas to see what's there to be explored, learned, and enjoyed. I have never been to this area so there should be plenty of new adventures for hubby and me. A great meal and back to my new home would be an end to a wonderful day.
Geeze,…Day ONE would be the start of something truly life altering for my family. We need a home of our own. My kids deserve to have a stable home to lay their heads at night, and with this economy and the pitfalls of our lives, there is NO WAY that will ever happen. I am crossing my fingers that I get a knock at my door on the 19th from you all.
This is my chain of events over the past year…
1. My mother is suffering from colon cancer. She is end stage. My husband is laid off from his union painting job.
2. We give up our beach-front condo(2 bedroom) for my parents small, unfinished, moldy basement to be live in hospice for her.
3. We switch my daughters school to that district. At that point it is: Me, my husband, our 10year old daughter, and our then 3 month old son, and Pekingese named Elvis.
4.My mom passes away June 3rd. June 5th my stepfather tells us to move out. He no longer needs us. (We find out that the papers he had drawn up to pass the house to us once Mom passed had disappeared, and were apparently faked to get us to do what he was unwilling to do. That which I would have done willingly anyways!)
5. We move out of my parents basement into a ramshackle rental house that was previously inhabited by horders…
We proceed to renovate the house enough to move into under such distressed circumstances less than 1 month after Mom passed away. We sign 1 year lease on Aug. 1st 2009.
6. We find out that among other things, our landlord resents any renovations and is a basic slumlord. She tell us because the gas heater needed replacement, she can no longer keep the house and the house is now on the market to be sold.
7. We are "hosting" open houses every Tuesday from 11-1pm til the house is sold.
We are looking for a home. We have no money. We no longer speak to my dad. Our family is truly at the end of our ropes. It's sooo hard to put on a sunny face when all this is going on.
WE DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.
PLEASE KNOCK ON OUR DOOR. WE REALLY NEED THIS.<3
When do we start entering on the 2010 Green Home Sweepstakes?
What would I do first if I won this beautiful home, 1. Get on my Knees and Thank God!!! 2. The I would ask Him to send me the money to pay the taxes and to move up there, I spent seven years in New England and would love to live there again, but so far it has not been ment to be. 3. Then after I check out every nuk and cranie in the house, I would check out the surronding landscape. 4. After that the town and every other place I could think of. Then back on my knees once more for more thanks to God for letting me win AND to be able to live there to.
P.S. to my other comment. Just thought I had better let all those Oklahoman's out there that I do like it here, even if it gets way to hot in the summer and (this year) way to cold in the winter, and is all around to dry in the S. W. part of the state
I grew up in Long Island New York. I live in Virginia now. We lived on the Long Island sound. I will always have fond memories of going swimmming in the sound and taking a walk on the docks at Port Jefferson every Sunday after church and watching the ships and ferry's come in from Connecticut ,and then getting an ice cream cone at the ice cream parlor. The 2010 Dream Homes reminds of my childhood home. I would definitly get a lobster meal at the local resturant. Then I would go for a walk in town and along the The CapeCod Sea Shore. I would head back home to my new Dream Home, and go upstairs the the Loft and gaze at the stars above and Thank god for this beautiful home that was given to me. Jeanne Virginia
Hmmm…First, I'm sure, I would go out for a lobster dinner, glass of champagne of course, a cup of tea and a slice of Boston Cream Pie. Then home,my small family and I would go and reflect on the most wonderful day in our lives.
i would love to soak up the views of the beautiful coast and try to capture some with my watercolors .i have already met some residents of that area and find them friendly and unique.what an adventure it would be to live in such a fasinating place!
beautiful coastline!would like to do some watercolors there. have never visited new england but will someday.
I would spend the day at my new home and look around the neighborhood and then go up to the loft and read.
I would move in and thank God and HGTV for a wonderful home in a lovely area. We lived there for many years and this would be a dream home for us not just a green home. A green dream home.
Well first I would take my two little shihtzus for a nice walk around the neighborhood, Then, I would go to the beach. I miss the East Coast and the ocean. I am a fish lover! I would take some clam clouder to the beach with my dogs (hopefully) and enjoy the breeze and sounds of the ocean. I would Thank GOD everyday for the my blessings. Then last but not least I would tour the local stores and look for a natural organic place to buy my grogeries.
I miss spelled chowder! Guess I was just wishing Hard.
First I would kiss the floor of the new home, then I would go and explore the neighborhood get to know my neighbors. Then I would have a house party and invite all the neighbors.
I have dreamt of retiring to Cape Cod for almost 40 years, that’s how much I love it. Everyone says to hold on to your dreams. But, financially, I just do not see this happening to us. My worst dread is that I will wind up in a trailer home, not that there is anything wrong with that. My mother always said to live in hopes, and that is what I am doing now.
To me, Plymouth is more than “close enough”. I would definitely be touring the cape, mostly by walking to as many places as possible. There is so much to see and enjoy in Plymouth as well. The air makes you want to deeply inhale and take it all in. Love It!
Both myself and my 11yr old son would hit the beach and surrounding areas and sights of interest. We rent an apartment in Ocean City,NJ-so we love the beach and seashore life. It would be totally awesome, as my son would say!! And we own an electric scooter and we would love to go all the way Green!!
oh and being a single mother on social security because I’m disabled, makes it hard to actually even dream of owning a home. So owning something so beautiful and green to boot, would be a dream come true. A little slice of heaven for me and my son!! It’s been a tough 11yrs for both myself and my little man. But through the tough times he never complains and always has enough hope for the two of us. I pray we win so he doesn’t worry anymore and he can stop putting on the brave face for me all the time…..and really have something of our own…It is so beautiful – I hope I win!!
