A Down-to-Earth Read

New year; new book. I just treated myself to a text highly recommended by the folks at GreenBiz.com. I’m already hooked, only after a few pages. Writes author Stewart Brand, “Earth will be fine, no matter what; so will life. It is humans who are in trouble.” Brilliant.

So what’s on your Green reading list this winter?

  1. Well, MARY, between the interesting comments and links from your blog threads, all of the 'Green' information to be found throughout HGTV's website and on their TV programs, in addition to Marie Miller's MGTOTD's, I'm kept busy absorbing all of this great wealth of knowledge day in, day out. I'll certainly have to take a look into this latest recommended reading, Whole Earth Discipline.

I agree 200% with author Stewart Brand's statement, "Earth will be fine, no matter what… It is humans who are in trouble." Amazing that with all of our scientific research and data, so many still can't seem to see the florist for the bees, or something along those lines.

  2. In reference to the previous post about failing to see the big picture, I've been completely involved wrapping up some final issues with folks at Intensedebate. However, I wanted to add to Show Me's comments about a Green reading list.

My list, with any luck, will be reading all of the appliance, eco-friendly convenience, and maintenance manuals that come with the Pinehills 2010 Green Home when I'm selected as the winner. Once that's done, I can move on to Stewart Brand's new book, Whole Earth Discipline.

Along with the "Greening" going at HGTV, it's nice to know that on top of it all, Plymouth Rocks!

  3. This sounds like a book I would like to read, enjoy science more than stories – meanwhile, was excited in Plymouth today – a reprint of response to last subject

BLOGGER GETS BAGGED AT GREEN HOME 2010 ON MOVE-IN DAY!!!!!

All right, I stumbled over before work – busy bees, all of them – no one knew I was there, I was feeling lonely, and as soon as the camera came out, I got to meet people from HGTV! – Jack was working in the garage, even had a picture of us taken by one of the producers (I think) – well anyway, today's pictures were sworn to secrecy with the photo of myself and Jack – by the way ladies, he is just as handsome in person, and even more charming than on TV

  5. Thank you Mary for the new year; new book!! I might offer a simple reading with the "Living Like Ed", which is a "Guide to the Eco-Friendly Life by Ed Begley, Jr.!!"

"When not acting, Begley is a tireless promoter of environmental causes. He has also served as the Environmental Affairs Commissioner for the City of Los Angeles and on the boards of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, the Environmental Research Foundation, The Coalition for Clean Air, and the American Oceans Campaign. Begley's environmental efforts have earned him awards from the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Coalition for Clean Air."

    Fabulous reading!!!

  6. MGTOTD: As long as gas prices and the cost of living are rising, one of the best ways to save some money in the monthly checking account is by cutting down on the cost you spend during everyday driving. Since different cars have engines that run on different miles per gallon, the first thing to do is see how much you're spending.

Also, you might check with your Automobile Insurance Company and ask them if they would consider reducing your insurance if you were to reduce your weekly commute mileage to and from work.

  7. What's truly exciting is the possibility of greener reading with new technology. My husband and I were talking about this very issue just this morning when we saw an ad for the Sony e-book reader in today's Wall Street Journal. We have been following the buzz surrounding Amazon's Kindle e-book reader versus Sony's e-book reader. The thought of downsizing book collections and saving trees, while still be able to keep up on reading certainly is attractive.

  8. Excellent report, BBSteve—well, even if it all must be kept secret. Awesome that you got to meet Jack Thomasson, and interact with the folks from HGTV.

Although it's relatively quiet here in the Green Home blog for the time being, that will change before long, when the excitement over at the Dream Home blog winds down several notches in March.

  11. Side Note: Did you know that Mr. Brand, who is now 68 and lives on a tugboat in Sausalito, California? Also, I love that The Whole Earth Catalog began with the words “We are as gods and we might as well get good at it.” and his book Whole Earth Discipline begins with "We are as gods and HAVE to get good at it." Brand wrote The WELL's sign on message, "You own your own words, unless they contain information. In which case they belong to no one."

    Brilliant, don't you think?

Marie Miller on January 27, 2010 at 2:29 pm
  12. MGTOTD: Everyone's looking to live green. Recycling plastic products and choosing other packaging alternatives will cut down on plastic waste. Combining the two ideas would make a tremendous difference in the amount of plastic materials that are cluttering up our landfills and harming our birds, animals and even our food supplies.

Marie Miller on January 27, 2010 at 2:32 pm
  13. continuing….

Buy less plastic. Opt for packaging that is more environmentally friendly, such as paper or cardboard. If you can only find plastic buy the item that uses the least or buy large containers to have one to reuse rather than many small ones. Look at the packaging to see if it can be used after the product is gone as well. Always look at the packaging to see if it can be used after the product is gone as well. Always try to buy things that state they’re made from recycled materials, too.

Marie Miller on January 27, 2010 at 2:33 pm
  14. WHEW!! I had to take a break from the DREAM HOME blogs!! Record breaking comments over there. Marie, thank you for the additional information on Stewart Brand!! And for reminding folks to cut down on the plastics! Make sure to use only plastic labeled 2,4,5 and 1 is considered safe, but not for reuse because of increased risk of bacteria.. (I wouldn't use it) There are many new products made from potato and corn, which cost more but are biodegradable. Never use plastic to heat water or food, as the chemicals will leak. Like Marie has mentioned, it is better not to use it or reuse it over and over. Use them for storage for the kids' legos, small toys, socks (organize them in the drawer), makeup, batteries, nails/screws. Besides the landfills being cluttered, there is a Garbage Patch twice the size of the US in the Pacific Ocean full of plastics… that may contain 100 million tons of TRASH! YIKES! Love life by living green and having a dream. Doing small things daily really add up… Thank you Marie for your tireless tips and passion for the environment!

  15. I like the qutoe, but I think it is dangerous to think in terms of "just humans" or "only humans." We are all so interconnected and there are so many different species dying off all the time that it is not only humans that will be hurt in the long run. Even earth will have a lot of recovering to do. Its amazing to me how being green is so much about team work… working with eachother, the ecosysems, and the earth in general.

JessiRose on January 27, 2010 at 7:11 pm
  16. Thanks for the insight into Stewart Brand. Intriguing that he lives on a tugboat. Talk about down to Earth. I can imagine a houseboat, but a tugboat REALLY gives me a nitty-gritty visual. However, for folks that don't know Sausalito, don't think that tugboat means a rusting hulk! That gem of a town, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco in Marin County, is the home of some very high-end real estate, even on the water. It takes plenty of "green" to live there.

  17. The lucky HGTV Green Home 2010 winner will almost certainly be paying a visit or two (or three, or more…) to European Gardens (on Court Street) in downtown Plymouth.

The multi-talented owners are Oliver and Jennifer Triebel, experienced horticulturalists, designers and home stagers. With a current store successfully open in Duxbury, the Triebels learned the challenging "art" of retailing as the owners of stores in both Wellesley and Marblehead.

The next step for their European Garden shop in Plymouth may be to feature paintings of local artists, thus combining the complementary visual beauty of the arts both indoors and out.

To spruce up your garden and spice up your kitchen (or any other room in your home), the Triebels strive to make their stores unique, and travel the world to do so. As a result, European Gardens carries an impressive selection of architecturally significant and uncommon accessories, gifts and design collectibles for the home and garden.

Sounds perfect for any dream home, or your HGTV Pinehills Green Home.

  18. MARY – Thanks for the heads up on a good read! I am going to check it out at the bookstore this weekend. I knew a little about the Whole Earth Catalogs. I looked this up and found it interesting…

The Whole Earth Catalog was an American counterculture catalog published by Stewart Brand between 1968 and 1972, and occasionally thereafter, until 1998. Although the WECs listed all sorts of products for sale (clothing, books, tools, machines, seeds — anything for a self-sustainable ""hippie" lifestyle) the Whole Earth Catalogs themselves did not sell any of the products. Instead the vendors and their prices were listed right alongside with the items. This led to a need for the Catalogs to be frequently updated.

Apple Inc. founder and entrepreneur Steve Jobs has described the Catalog as the conceptual forerunner of the World Wide Web. WOW…pretty impressive!
